DEs: have you REALLY done them all?

A while ago, they said they would add, disable and rotate dynamic events throughout the life of the game to keep it fresh. Adding in hidden events and the odds of completing them all is unlikely.

As for their difficulty, most of them require 5 players or less to complete. I’ve only seen a few that require around 3 more and only because of the mechanic of the event, where the group has to be split up between multiple objectives.

I watched someone try it and get 0. Basically, when the colors appear, they begin to freak out then attempt to press the button either far too early or late. Imagine having a 2s lag. As soon as multiple circles start to appear, head explodes.

They only attempted it twice, then walked away, so I did it for them.

If you know how the song goes, I can confirm it is possible to play the note even when it lags out and dissapears.

Just a few minutes ago, I played through the part that goes 8-9-7 even though all 3 circles appeared on the same line (as if all 3 should be played at the same second) and dissapeared roughly a second before reaching the middle. It lagged out a few times, but I still managed to get 600. As my first time playing today, it kind of felt nerfed compared yesterday, since yesterday, I was failing to play the note when it was in the middle, but now, it seems to count even while almost out of it.

Dwayna can be solo’d and Grenth can be duo’d.

Lyssa and Melandru are the only ones that require at least a full group due to their mechanic.

I haven’t done Balthazar since the start, but the easiest time I did it was with 4 (random) people. In comparison, the zerg usually had 10 deaths in the first second and only a handful remaining a minute later.

The problem with soloing these events however is that the time + effort vs reward is way off knowing that a zerg could do it in a fraction of the time while a majority stands there just spamming 1. Unfortunately, this will never be changed though.

How do you do Magic Find as an Elementalist?

in Elementalist

D/D, power/precision/magic find crafted gear (aka the regular kind).

For solo farming:

10 air, 10 earth, 30 water and 20 arcana
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fEAQJAoYhImKbyR3gjEAkHm0SKjCiIK8QRxM5A

30 earth, 30 water and 10 arcana
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fEAQJAoYhMmKbyR3gjDAkHm0SKjHi4BJlCzA

Both are played the same, the second one is slightly safer.

Basically, all you do is ring of fire, earthquake, signet of air and churning earth.

More specifically, you collect a group of mobs by running around, then burning speed to other groups while the first mobs are chasing. Optionally drake’s breath and fire grab while they’re running towards you. Once ready, ring of fire, earthquake, signet of air and begin casting churning earth. Half way through the cast, switch to water attunement then frost aura and arcane wave. At this point, in terms of damage, you have +10% from boons, +6% from vulnerability, +20% from water attunement and 9 stacks of might. When churning earth goes off, frozen burst, dodge roll out then cone of cold. If they’re still alive, ride the lightning back into the group, an optional updraft then lightning whip spam. You then go back to fire attunement and start from the top.

I have done groups of 20-30 in Orr before (they were all risen pirates/nobles, aka melee only), but there’s really no point. AoE is capped to 5 targets.

Note that GW2 rewards zerging however, so farming in a group within a zerg will be faster, assuming your group can keep up.

Those type of mobs have a forward lunge that deals a large amount of damage. The worst part is, it has no warning, so the only way to counter it is to either stay ranged or time it, then kite until it lunges.

They did originally say (explorable) dungeons would be the hardest content in the game designed for a group of coordinated players, aka not PuGs. If you keep that in mind, it explains why dungeons can seem PuG unfriendly (no grouping system, instances tied to the leader).

Why not have NCSoft IDs for accounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The master account name was the username of the NCSoft account. The GW1 username was another account name under the NCSoft account.

The only scenario where a name based username would protect you is when the attacker knows your login info but not your email and to login an email verification is needed. Even then, compared to an email based username, it’s really only protecting you if you have a weak or the same password on your email.

Name based usernames are generally private, so only the owner should ever know it. In this sense, to hack accounts, they use lists of emails to see if the email is registered to an account. If it is, they hack the email and gain the account name. If they know the account name already, you got phished or keylogged. If you got keylogged, they know everything. If you got phished, then they would know your login info and your IP (if they knew the email was needed though, they would have also phished that, but let’s pretend they didn’t). Using your IP, they can try to track you around the net and get your email from places you’ve been (typically from fansites via ads) or alternatively, if the account’s verification process is IP based, they can attempt to proxy near your location to bypass it, depending on how strict the verification is.

If you factor in other security measures, such as authenticators, the differences between the two types of usernames becomes so insignificant that the email should be used simply because you’re more likely to remember it.

Why not have NCSoft IDs for accounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

NCSoft accounts are being transitioned to emails.

Having a random account name isn’t any safer. For emails, someone has to first know your email and second, guess you’re playing the game. For random named accounts, they can obtain your account name by getting your email and requesting a password reset / lost account. Either way, it all comes down to your email and password.

Originally, GW1 accounts used your registered email to login. It wasn’t until the NCSoft account merger that they offered @ncsoft accounts. The NCSoft account name was never actually used for anything, except to login to the NCSoft master account website.

If you wanted to, you could always register your account under a unique email, making a new email or alias each time.

Why I haven't touched the gem shop yet

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

Yeah, once it became clear that vertical progression was here to stay I stopped purchasing gems. It really makes no sense to chase the next step on a treadmill with RL currency. At least the WoW treadmill is a free ride. I was wondering whether there were others like me out there.

Buy the pet from Blizzard’s cash shop, sell it in game for gold and buy raid gear.

For those that don’t raid and want raid gear, buying it for RL currency has also been an option, dating back to vanilla, where you could buy gold from a farmer, then pay to get carried. The only thing that has changed is Blizzard providing an option to buy gold.

What's wrong with vertical progression?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The problem with horizontal progression is that when you feel your character is complete, you have no reason to continue, whereas with vertical progression, you’re (eventually) forced to continue. Apparently, and since vertical progression is used everywhere, the majority either loves it or doesn’t know how to live without it since it does offer a very clear goal. On the other hand, if only skins are offered, there’s no point in doing the content if you don’t like the way it looks, with the exception of doing it for the experience.

On the developer side, it’s all about getting the maximum number of players involved or interested. Since everything that horizontal progression can add can be done with vertical progression, vertical will always be more popular.

GW1 did feature vertical progression, though it was small and easy to overcome. At the very least, the lightbringer title, followed by the EotN pve skills are an example. Depending on how you look at it, some skills could also be considered, in cases where the skill was simply superior, making it a requirement over its older or nonexistent version.

Oh, and MMOs always tie it to forced grouping. No solo dungeon content for the best gear. Why not?

Because they don’t want to deal with it. Either the good players will find it too easy or the bad players will say it’s impossible.

If they do make it difficult, all the good players will be geared while all the bad players would be looking for groups. Since a majority of groups would be consisting of bad players, it just creates a mess.

Make overflow the default for PvE zones.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

They could just set the population caps to 0, forcing everyone into overflow. The problem with that is you’ll probably never see the people on your own server, most zones would be zergs and gathering nodes would be exploited – but I think they already partially fixed that.

It would make cross realming dungeons really easy though.

"No Mounts" Mindset related to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There will never be flying mounts in GW2, at least for the next 10 or so years. The landscape simply doesn’t support it, unless you accept special flight available areas, as seen in Aion.

Land mounts however, they never actually denied. It’s one of those things that could happen. Charr do have tanks/cars. They would also be a big gem store item assuming they added unique mounts or the ability to customize/pimp yours.

In-game, they already added a mount – the witch’s broom. It just doesn’t increase your speed.

They’re ignoring you because it’s a beta client, so it’s not fully supported.

It looks like the browser is failing to download any additional files required to show the page, such as images, css and js files. Either something is blocking those files (typically an antivirus/firewall), your cache is corrupted or everyone with the mac client has the issue.

On Windows, the cache is located in a hidden temporary file location, and the folder’s name starts with gw2cache. Assuming a somewhat similar directory structure, you should be able to find it by searching your entire computer for either gw2cache or awesomium. Inside the gw2cache folder should be a log file (awesomium.log), showing any errors.

Reworking of waypoint costs

here’s a simple fix, copy/paste gw1 system, job’s done/

So they should make all waypoints free, then remove all waypoints from the zones and replace them with simple rez shrines? Waypoints would then only be available at safe places, so only the main cities and possibly the Orders and Fort Trinity, then they could add a waypoint for each zone, just for convenience, at the entrance.

Ok.

Has anyone noticed the lack of security?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

This doesn’t lock them down it’s only a question that asks if you would like to allow them on. It doesn’t prevent them from continuing to attack your account.

As long as you never verify them, they are locked out. The email verification is checked prior to validating the password. In this sense, every IP is blacklisted, except for those you verified.

For blacklisting or temporarly locking out individual IP addresses, there’s no point. If I was going to hack your account, I would use one of the many free available proxies and rotate through them.

If you want your entire account locked, where you then have to do basically the same thing that the verification email does, then once someone knows your email, they could permanently lock down your account. Worst case scenario, you’d get kicked from the game every attempt and then eventually temporarly banned while waiting for support to change your email. Best case scenario, you have to verify your account each time you wanted to login, which already happens if you chose to not remember your own IP.

Spoofing the email or IP address should have no effect here, unless they locked out IP addresses on failed attempts for 24+ hours, then I could spoof your IP to make it look like you are failing your own login, forcing you yourself to be locked out. The only way to properly “spoof” the IP would be to proxy using your connection, which would mean you have a much larger problem.

If someone is truly brute forcing your account, which is both rare are time consuming, your account would be getting login attempts hundreds of times per second. Since ArenaNet has confirmed that they can watch failed login attempts, surely, they can detect and stop this. If someone is able to login to your account in under 50 attempts, they know your password or a variation of it.

If you want additional security, attach an authenticator. If you don’t have a device to run it on, you can emulate an android one. If someone else gains access to your secret code however, the authenticator is pointless, same goes for the physical (keychain) ones.

If you want to go full paranoia mode, no matter how much security you throw on your account, it will be able to be bypassed given someone is specifically targeting you. After all, as long as you can access your account, someone else can. The user will always be the weakest link.

Account Restoration Questions [merged]

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The authenticator requests the code every time your location (IP) changes. If someone logged in from China, it would have required the code. If you had your email verified, it would have required an email verification.

To bypass email authentication, you would have had to accepted it or they also have access to your email.

To bypass an authenticator, you were either subjected to a real time man in the middle attack at some point (which is extremely rare and can be used to bypass even physical authenticators), they proxy’d through your computer (not possible, unless you’re in China), they cloned your device running the authenticator (especially if you’re emulating it), they got access to your unique authenticator code, you didn’t set up the authenticator properly or it can be bypassed server side.

A majority of the time, when someone claims that…

i have mobile authenticator, anti virus, firewall, blah blah, i have also been playing MMOs for over 10 years and never had a problem

… they end up lying about it, especially when they say they are an IT (security) professional. If it was entirely ArenaNet’s fault, and you could hack someone’s account without ever phishing them in any way, then you’d know about it. Hundreds of people would be hacked every day and the forums would be filled with it, as seen in Rift.

Assuming you actually have an authenticator attached to your account, chances are you have a keylogger and have had one since before you added an authenticator to your account or the device with the authenticator is compromised (windows phone). Note that anti-virus software will not detect cleanly written, custom made, keyloggers/viruses as long as they don’t do anything extreme. It would have to be GW2 specific, so it would have originated from a fansite, which is also the easiest way to phish account information.

As for restoring accounts, they have rolled back accounts in the past for special cases.

Second part Claw of Jormag battle

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Sometimes, the claw will start the second stage stunned, giving you a back to back stun phase, though for the first stun, the frozen ground does do damage. It seems to happen when you get his health low in the previous stage, which ends at just below 50%.

What you’re supposed to do is clear a path for the golems to reach the claw. If you predict when the ice spawns, you can grab a bomb and have it ready to place down to instantly (or almost) destroy nearby ice pillars. Throwing it usually works better though, since by the time the planted bomb explodes, other players usually destroy it.

Once a certain amount of golems reach the claw and explode, he will be stunned and the frozen ground beneath him will become safe for the duration of the phase. Since both hands and the head is attackable, you should AoE, trying to hit all 3 to do maximum damage. As a D/D elementalist for example, vapor blade can be used to hit all 3 targets twice per attack, dealing roughly 6k damage per swing.

Depending on how much damage everyone did during the stun phases, you may end up with the claw having just a small amount of health left. It’s faster to just ranged it down at that point, since you’ll do so long before enough golems reach him.

For adds during the encounter, the sides can be ignored and people that do kill the elementals are usually doing so for the stones and have no intention of actually participating. The group of adds that spawn should be killed but the 2 champions with them ignored and left in the back. They will automatically die when the stun phase begins. For a quick way of dealing with the non-champions in the group, plant a bomb and kite them within the blast radius to instantly kill them all.

Is GW2 becoming less and less solo friendly?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

For zones, they’re not becoming less solo friendly, they’re just requiring a higher amount of player skill. I’ll assume GW2 is supposed to be a skill based game and as such, Orr and now Southsun Cove are just the beginning on the difficulty scale. The next zone should be even harder.

In truly difficult zones, you know that the random guy over there is probably not a bad player. Other players choose to zerg the content to remove the skill requirement. Unfortunately, GW2 rewards zerging much more than someone who puts in the effort and they can never change this, since the reason for it was one of their features.

For the personal story, I can only guess that they chose to make it a group to simulate the pact joining forces, since chances are, the people in your group are of different orders. For something that’s supposed to be your personal story however, it should not require grouping. Depending on how they handle personal story expansions, Zhaitan may become a locked gate, though probably, the next personal story will start from step 1 and not be a continuation.

Good luck 5 manning jormags event or gates of arah , ty

From my experience, Jormag can be done solo, it just takes a long time, including all the crystals. I haven’t done the claw solo myself, only because there’s always someone there, but I have done all the crystals solo. I have however done it with only 4 people. The entire time one of the 4 wouldn’t stop complaining about how we didn’t have enough and would fail. The hardest part of the event is the last crystal, but you can just ranged it down and run, dealing with the adds on the side or later.

I’ve done the gates up to the keep the area clear part with only 5. The scaling on the amount of mobs seems to assume there should be a lot of people. To actually do that part, everyone has to catch and keep all the mobs out of the ring. I would expect that 5 coordinated people could do it, but probably not 5 randoms.

The statement that everything can be done with 5 players is true, assuming all 5 players are coordinated and know how to play. The one exception I can think of it Lyssa, since 5 is the minimum to defend all the points, but if they’re coordinated, they should be able to float between them instead of having 1 person on each point.

What's the new island about, after all?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The island is an evolving one which will change depending on the direction ArenaNet takes it.

We stormed the island and took control of it. Now we keep the island safe, readying it for the workers of Tyria to move in. Based on the tourists around the island, it’ll probably become some type of island resort.

In the other direction, the ancient karka wasn’t actually killed. It is currently stuck, encased in hardened lava, waiting, rebuilding a new and stronger shell. One day, long after they finished building the island, it will rise, gather its army, raze everything, kill all the tourists and exact its revenge. Then, we start again. (it would be like a month long dynamic event containing “1 time only” along with normal events that resets every other or couple of months)

Games nowadays assume you know basic knowledge of the way they work. For someone completely new to gaming, it takes months to understand an MMO. In this case, the meaning of the word unique should be easily understood. If an item is one of a kind, one would assume that you could only have 1 of them.

Soulbound is a better example of a term that isn’t explained, even more so in games that state you have no soul in one way or another.

You can find them at any store that is willing to carry them, which will of course vary from city to city. If they’re simply not popular in your local area, they won’t carry them. Some stores will take requests however, allowing you to order specific items that aren’t usually carried.

If you just don’t want to use a credit card online, you could always do a money transfer to paypal, then use that to buy stuff.
