Trap update?

TE making them throwable again would help. Every time I do AC for kicks, I am reminded of how cool it is when the Ascalonian Rangers there like to do that little setup of tossing a trap behind you, then knocking you back into it.

I’d also like to see Frost Trap completely replaced with a Smoke Trap. Would be cool if we had 1 non-damaging trap so we can use it with Trapper Runes. Maybe have the initial trigger do a small daze like ½s and the pulses blind foes. The extra smoke field would also be nice to blast stealth.

I’d also like to see Smoke Trap, but not replace Frost Trap. I’d like to see Frost Trap get a ton better power scaling, so it is comparable to the DH traps, then it could be used in power builds, since it does not benefit from condition damage anyway. Maybe Smoke Trap could be Elite?

I had an idea a while back that the traps could be made into an elite kit… That sort of bar compression would make them nearly compulsory if you were running any condi damage stat at all.

Dagger is not a condi weapon. It’s an hybrid weapon that can work on both pure condi build, pure power build and Ideally, the combination of the two. We see that among several POF, specialization that A.net is really pushing the hybrid role and even got a new stat combo for it. Poison and vulnerability are good for any build, you will put pressure with bleed stacking and the fast dagger attacks(4 attacks chain in 1.5 sec which you can bombo with quickness). The big burst and CC, you can get from F1-F3 skills with the right pet option. Some the soulbeast skills got better tooltips compared to full zerk maul.

This.

Plus, there is nothing saying you need to use the Dagger anyway if you do not want to play condi.

Trap update?

I think we can all agree that Ranger traps need some love to see use outside of a single PvE build, where even there they are taken purely because they are the best worst choice.

With the Soulbeast being somewhat condi-centric, from what we have seen and with the balance patch coming, I really hope that Ranger traps see some improvements.

The toss up with running traps and a condi build is (since they changed the trait positions) that you have to choose between Sharpened Edges and Trapper’s Expertise. Now with the nerf to Sharpened Edges, if some trap improvements were made, Trapper’s Expertise would be a more viable choice.

It remains to be seen how our pet traits will affect us, but Companion’s Might could be a far more beneficial trait than Sharpened Edges going forward, allowing us to choose Trapper’s Expertise for a build that does not focus completely on traps.

All this said, what changes would you like to see to traps to make them more viable?

Also, the 90s is from the PvP area, it’s highly possible it has a different CD or Effect or Coefficients in PvE

While possible it’s probably not true since getting back up from being downed in PvE is where the Ranger completely outshines every other class in the game by a mile.

It’s easily the one place we need 0 assistance in.

It states on the trait that “This trait is unique per game mode” so it will be different.

60 stacks of bleed? Did you even play with sharpened edges? ever?

Falls in the category “revenant hammer does 20k CoR every 2sec”…

tics, he said tics not stacks. Which is related to the condition duration.

So he count 11 poison stack ticking over 6 seconds = 66 tics. It’s a lot more impressive than saying that the soul beast will be able to stack 11 poison stack thanks to the stance. In group setting, if everything work perfectly it could be something like :
self : 11
+ 4 × 5 stacks (20)
so 31 stacks for 186 tics of poison (awesome don’t you think?)

I don’t think it’s awesome tbh. Spider Venom will give 180 poison ticks with the same cooldown but you have 24s to make 6 attacks, meaning you can pre-cast it in preparation, it is not truncated into making 12 attacks in 6 seconds or 6 attacks in 3 seconds for allies to take full advantage of it. Not only that, but it does not require a GM trait to function. The might applied by Vulture Stance is pretty useless in a group setting.

If it were me, I’d remove the Might generation, the 50% health condition and make the Vulture Stance a unique buff that increases base condition durations for the duration by say 33% or more, as well as applying the poison.

If it is just open world PvE, then Tiger is probably your best bet, until you get it, go for the other Felines, they do the most damage which is what you want. If you take advantage of pet swap traits, then have a Feline in both slots. If not, take something tankier in the 2nd swap so if your Feline is going to die, you can swap to something tankier that will hold agro for you. River Drake is pretty good with a decent DPS burst too, the Wyverns are pretty tanky, so if you are in an area with mobs that have break bars, the Electric one is a good choice for a 2nd pet due to its CC.

Open World and Instanced reward Tracks

Heimskarl Ashfiend.9582

For those who are only reading the TL:DR I say this again, before commenting that PvE already get’s all of what I’m asking for actually read what my post is saying.

For those of us who only run raids and FotM when we log on we DO NOT go out and farm the season 3 maps. We do NOT get dungeon rewards. Yet WvW and PvPers do from just playing their game mode.

What I am suggesting is a track that allows us raiders and FotM runners to work towards the season materials the same way WvW and PvP players can. You people play one game mode and yet have access to the PvE rewards. I’m not asking for PvE players to receive PvP or WvW rewards at all. I’m asking for Fractal and Raid runners to be able to gain other PvE rewards in the same way by playing the game mode we want to.

If you read my post you will see what I’m actually talking about. PvP and WvW CAN go to the season three maps, grab the nodes, and return to their game mode and continue working towards more. HOWEVER we who only play FotM and Raids are unable to do that. Our game mode is just FotM and Raids. Most of us don’t like going into the competitive game modes. So we are locked into only grabbing the nodes in the season 3 maps. I don’t care about any other rewards from the tracks. Just an easier way to obtain those materials that the competitive players can obtain through both farming the nodes AND playing their own game mode.

If you want to say it’s just as easy for a FotM or Raider to get anything else in PvE then I say anyone from WvW and PvP has just as easy a time getting them. There shouldn’t be tracks for the seasonal maps that allow them easier access to those rewards. So stop trying to shut down something you apparently aren’t looking at from more than one angle.

I’ve got no issue with what you are asking for, as long as you remove most of the rest of the loot from completing fractals/raids etc. You’d then get the same amount of loot for time spent as in WvW or PvP.

Equality is what you are asking for, yes?

I think the leaps are pretty cool, plus don’t forget the quickness attached to a weapon, that is pretty amazing.

New Ranger Specialization: Soulbeast.

in Ranger

Posted by: Heimskarl Ashfiend.9582

Heimskarl Ashfiend.9582

…I don’t know where you’re getting that from. The soulbeast clearly swaps back and forth between having the pet out and merging with it. The pet is still a vital part of the design of the soulbeast. If you choose to always merge with your pet, that appears to be an option, but it looks like that would be similar to choosing to to never leave fire attunement – there will be situations where you would be objectively inferior to someone who utilises the full tool kit and not just one part of it.

If you want to permanently give up access to all of your pet’s power and their F2 skills (which on most pets is the best skill) that’s your choice. I doubt it will be the best one.

Yeah. Even if you stow the pet permanently and don’t use the F2, pet choice is still important for the stat bonus and additional skills

I can see myself using the Pet F2 like Tigers’ Furious Pounce to enter combat and get the buff, then merging as soon as it lands, hopefully the merging counts as a pet or weapon swap for the on-swap traits and sigils, sigil of agility, clarion/vigorous bond and zephyr’s speed. Probably keeping a CC pet on swap so you can drop out of beastmode and swap pets to CC on demand.

Your details on Griffon Stance are off, unless I’m reading the screenshots wrong. You get 25% of your endurance back immediately, and then for the duration, you proceed to have 100% endurance regen per second (essentially the old vigor boon before it was reworked)…

You are correct, but, it gives 25 endurance on use, not 25%. Although since most classes have 100 endurance pool, it IS 25%, but for a Daredevil, it is only 17%.

Over the duration, it will restore 105 endurance, including the initial 25. So it’s worth 2.1 dodges over 45s and likely will not stack with Vigor. When shared with Leader of the Pack it’s one dodge per 45s for allies.

I think it needs a CD reduction tbh.

I thought the “interval” of this skill was 1s, but in fact, it is 0.5s so that would bring the poison stacks capable up to 30 the same as Spider Venom. But you still have to have 5 people hit every 0.5s for the whole duration for that to happen, Spider Venom allows 24s to do the same for the same effect.

Bear and Dolyak Stances are amazingly good, Wolf is possibly very good if the interval is not too long. Griffon is kinda… Dunno. Maybe if the Might stacks had a longer duration.

I wonder if wolf would proc the vulture stance? This could be very sick in a group.environment.

It should, since it is a “second strike” not just another damage packet. Both the skills use the word “strike” so I believe it will.

Nowhere does Ranger have anything that resembles technology use. It is all nature magic. Affinity was the incorrect word. Using nature magic does rule out the use of technology, it just doesn’t fit and it is unecessary since you can do whatever you want with magic.

Also, it IS explicitly stated.

OnRPG: I knew there would be bows and things, but as you say the technology has advanced, so will they be more than pointy sticks on a string?

Anet: [Jon]The Ranger, one of the things we did with it in Guild Wars 2 is kind of go with a much more bestial and naturey feel and so because of that he kind of focuses on a lot weapons that are very natural. If he’s in melee combat he uses great swords and swords, and at range he throws axes, uses bows and short bows, long bows, and a lot of his spells, I got to mention the trap that [has] poison snakes, or he summons a nature spirit, and so we kind of embraced that naturey feel with him, kind of took him in that direction because we feel like that’s an archetype that people who play a Ranger really like and it gives us kind of an opportunity, you know in other places, to use the more advanced rifles and pistols with our [more earthly? doesn’t sound right..garbled..Sounded like it was a glitch or edited out intentionally..] professions.

[Eric]Yeah, I think we’d like to look at as the Ranger profession has evolved the same way that the world has evolved, and the Rangers have sort of gone anti-technology, they’ve gone into the wild, they’ve gone and embraced sort of spirit, and things like that. There are other professions in our, you know, five unye, as yet revealed, we mentioned Warriors for example have no problem using rifles. There are plenty of other professions remaining we’re going to use both rifles and pistols, and so for the Ranger it just didn’t feel right for them to be using firearms.

As the world evolved, the Rangers went further into the wild… away from technology, and more towards being bestial and “naturey.”

http://www.onrpg.com/news/guild-wars-2-exclusive-ranger-interview-transcription/

Yeah, Engineer got a Hammer, a rocket powered hammer that you can ionize, magnetise and reflect projectiles with because it makes you spin around so fast. More tech than blunt instrument.

And warrior got daggers and a different martial style, seems like a logical progression for a class that is already the most proficient at martial weapons.

Ranger got more nature magic.

Well, we do have a harpoon gun. Those can get a bit techy. Obviously for some reason the devs thought it served the ranger well enough conceptually. In doing this they also made the harpoon gun feel very nature themed with all the piranha and coral shots.

Aside from that, that article was 7 years ago, back when the core concept was made, and I think what draxynnic mentioned rings true:

Now, it’s still possible that not using guns is a choice that current rangers make, and some future elite specialisation may still go in that direction. But I think there are justifications for the line to be drawn where it is, at least for now.

It’s not so much that the core ranger concept needs changing – I think it’s great and I’m sure we all love the wilderness and nature aspects of the class – but given that elite specialisations are meant as new avenues of both gameplay and concept I think it’s worth being a bit more open to what a ranger could be.

Also, you keep mentioning nature magic and I get what you mean but, it’s only really a part of the kit. Rangers are also trappers, survivalists and animal tamers. The latter I think is actually more important to the concept than the druidic side of things. Now, all of these nature-themed of course, but they’re not all necessarily magic, nor does it have to mean that ventures outside of that box should be anathema, especially not in cases like elite specs where the devs should feel free to come up with new and exciting ideas (not necessarily guns). Especially since with more numerous elite specs we’re not all meant to go for the same ones, and some specs will appeal thematically to some but not others. I’m sure not all warriors imagined themselves as Spellbreakers at the outset.

A harpoon gun is not a gun though, it is just replacing the spring action of the bow’s limbs with energy stored in pre-stretched rubber. The piranha and coral shot and other things like this are nature magic, not just nature themed.

Except for Sharpening Stone, the survival skills are magic, signets are magic rings, spirits are magic. Summoning a pet from the ether is magic, having the pet absorb damage or conditions for you is magic, the vast majority of Ranger is magic. Nature themed magic.

Sure, they can add new avenues of gameplay to a class with an eSpec, but they will not change the concept or theme of the base class, it makes no sense to do so and is counter productive. There are specific classes with specific themes for a reason. If you start crossing themes over, it makes them pointless to begin with.

I highly doubt they will ever add rifle to Ranger, it makes no sense thematically and there is no requirement for another ranged weapon, what role would a rifle perform? We have ranged condi with control, ranged power with control and ranged hybrid already. A rifle with a lot of control effects? I doubt it. I can see a couple of eSpecs being something like; Hammer – Thumper, a control spec ranger. Land Spear – Lancer, heavy power focused DPS. But a rifle is already redundant.

Anyway…..

skill 2: doubling the stacks of bleeding and poison + longer recharge

That would be a skill with a minimum of tactical use.

I’d rather see double the stacks with half the duration and leave the CD the same. More of a condi spike than DoT. So it would be 8 stacks bleed for 3s and the pet inflicts 2 stacks Poison for 3s on each strike.

Take a look at the prices for these foods on the TP, they are tanking.

It’s a nerf that had to come for the foods, sure, but a lot of people just lost a ton of gold. I have several thousand foods that are now not worth using at all, fair enough, I don’t care about those, it’s only a couple hundred gold.

What I am pretty annoyed about are the account bound utilities that are now useless and cost upwards of 40s each to make.

I have thousands of Furious Maintenance Oils that now give me 3% boon duration and 50 healing power…. Utterly useless to any build. Or what about the Base Maintenance oil, they are even worse, 0 concentration from conversion from healing power and 3 % boon duration.

Oh the Bountiful Sharpening stones are the best! Zero power from healing power conversion and zero power from concentration conversion! So no benefit whatsoever from their original purpose.

If you are going to change things so drastically so that they cannot be used for their original purpose, give some sort of conversion so we can change the account bound ones for ones that are actually useful to us. Either that or allow us to salvage them back into the original materials it took to make them.

Rangers refuse to use rifles and technology, but rather to develop their affinity to nature. That’s the lore. Bother to understand.

Having an affinity to nature does not mutually exclude using technology nor is that explicitly stated anywhere.

Engineer’s were scientists who used gadgets in battle and then suddenly got to smash things with giant hammers like a warrior.

Warrior’s were brute force soldiers who can now use fanciful dagger dances to take down sorcerers like some kind of martial mesmer.

Nowhere does Ranger have anything that resembles technology use. It is all nature magic. Affinity was the incorrect word. Using nature magic does rule out the use of technology, it just doesn’t fit and it is unecessary since you can do whatever you want with magic.

Yes I’m sure some could be nice. But you’re giving up your pets for it and lose access to everything Druid has.

Yes, you are giving up your pet temporarily for it.

Very disappointing, but will first wait and see what the 3rd skills are.

So no on-demand stealth with Jaguar. No on-demand fury with Tiger/Red Moa.

At this point you’re probably better off with a pet than to enter beastmode.

Just chill out, we know very little atm.

I’d just like to also see some continuity between ranger skills and ranges, take pet F2 skill effects for example, I’m sure you know, but for others see the image attached. Not only Ranger skills and ranges, but all skills that affect allies with effects. Auras are one that I believe are very similar to the stances, but they can be shared over a 600 radius, making them far more useful. Also I just believe that every single skill should have a somewhat equal opportunity cost.

Personally I’m pretty happy the F2 isn’t shared with the Soulbeast, it incentivizes using the pet still, and gives us more moves which is always cool.

Although I am very sad I won’t get an animation where I flap my arms and fly around the battlefield spitting fire onto the ground…

Yeah, shoulder charging people into a launch would have been cool with the Lectric Wyvvy too

Hey, looks like we’re at an impasse!

I want tests, results from those tests, then tweaking. There’s no point in going back and forth since what I say is not going to agree with you and vice-versa. Agree to disagree?

I bow to your diplomacy. I also want tests, results from those tests, then tweaking. But I also want balance between all skills of similar role. Seems we are one the same path, from different ends.
