A Case Study in ANet Communication

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Herr der Friedhoefe.2490

Herr der Friedhoefe.2490

It’s almost like Anet needs someone to ask the question, “what will Reddit think?”.

Reddit is the home to hive-mind fanboys for almost every online game. The power of that downboat button ensures that anything critical of a company or game will never be seen by large numbers of people, and the fanboys use it.

When Reddit goes ballistic it’s obvious that Houston didn’t know there is a problem, but needs to be told, and that has happened three times in recent weeks.

Commander tags for 300g?
Removing crossed sword indicators when a WvW objective is attacked?
Gem/Gold conversion changed, not for the better, with a lousy excuse?

Yeah, what will Reddit think?

By the way, I’m posting this here because if I posted this on Reddit it would downboated to the bottom of the lake, immediately.

No more white swords

Oh, I don’t know. I played on Underworld for quite some time, even after many of the guilds left.

And while true that the same guild might not be able to have one person per tower/keep having one player (doesn’t have to be a guildie) standing in there or at least walking between them shouldn’t really be that hard for any server with some sort of organization.

If Anet going to remove the white swords, can you remove the white knighting?

That would be almost too good to be true.

Removing white swords from objectives to give defenders a stronger role in alerting their team as well as giving attackers more of a chance to get through having their siege disabled.

This would be a mistake.

Seriously. As a defender, I don’t need a “stronger role”. The commanders already take me seriously. How about a few rewards for my role? Even I can only scout for so long before I want to go for a run too, but there is no one to take my place.

Be careful saying things don’t make any sense, it’s very rare that’s true. Almost everything (I’m speaking generically) is done for some reason or purpose, that purpose isn’t always very clear at first.

Unfortunately there is a rather large information gap between what you know, and what we can see going on. Without knowing what you know, I think it’s fair for us to describe quite a few things as “not making sense”.

For what it’s worth I am familiar with Bayes. In the 1990’s I worked with a group to produce a learning system that individuals could use to build a spam filter according to their own definition of spam. These systems were known as Naive Bayes Spam Filters and we managed to build a proof of concept system with a really lousy UI.

As an interesting side note it turned out that learning systems for individual users was simply not necessary because spam is so generic that it fulfills the Supreme Court definition of pornography. You know it when you see it.

In Bayesian terms, between the Omerta policy here and the glacial pace of development on this game, we are not receiving the Bayes Tokens needed to update our data set, and the information gap remains.

Thanks for reading.

Any chance for a response on my question? I think you may have missed it.

I apologize, I can’t currently speak on that.

Anet’s famous response for everything!!!

This is a 14 page thread of me answering all I can; throw me a bone sometimes.

Seriously, guys, John’s an amazing forum contributor. Play nicely — we want him to keep up the good info as he’s able to give it!

He’s an amazing contributor, probably the best dev contributor on these forums, but it was a pretty good question from Sariel and well presented. For those of us interested in crafting it’s an issue.

At lot of the game developments recently just don’t make any sense. A good example is the krait collection reward, a recipe that no one in their right mind would ever make because it’s not worth to use t6 mats to get an extra 15 minutes of food effect. There are a lot of examples.

I can appreciate that everyone’s favorite economist can’t answer, and he’s probably not responsible for the decisions being made. So is there perhaps someone else Gaile who you could forward the question to?

Population CDI over - now what?

in WvW

Posted by: Herr der Friedhoefe.2490

Herr der Friedhoefe.2490

Honestly, if this CDI is anything like the last ones, we’ll get a new community manager in a couple months whose first words will be: “Please give us a bullet point list of your concerns with WvW.” … and the entire process starts over from the beginning.

Sad but true, and exactly the reason why I no longer participate in the CDI’s process.

Even when we do get a result, like colored commander tags, the actual result is not anything like what we players wanted or suggested and we wind up having to scream at them for the real deal.

Now then, about guild commander tags, for guild members only. I guess that would be too much work.

There are no Ita, Rus or Dutch client software, but yes the Ring of Fire has become something of an unofficial WvW server for Italian players. We have several Italian guilds who have some talented commanders, but most of them don’t speak English.

That doesn’t slow us down one little bit, because they are really good at basic map chat communication, while they lead their guild with TS.

Anyone getting upset about languages needs to understand that…

the guy speaking that other language isn’t speaking to you.
the client filter and block function are there for you to use.
many people cannot speak any other language than their own.
and last, complaining in map chat about people using any other language will get you blocked and reported.

Anet have said repeatedly that no language is mandatory on any server.

Or do you know what is causing these bugs and how to fix them?

Would love to see this stuff fixed.

I would love to see this stuff made worthwhile to do. I did the Maguuma daily achieve today and out of pure coincidence I wound up among a bunch of krait mobs and got the scale drop that starts that collection.

Because I had a bunch of the skins already I went to the TP and bought the rest. That cost me about 3g. No big deal really, but the reward for that collection is a recipe for a supplement condition damage crystal that no one in their right mind is ever going to make because it requires T6 mats. The only bonus for making this item, as opposed to the item with the same effect, is 15 minutes more duration.

Really? Who is going to spend or use T6 mats worth 1g or more to make a food supplement that last 15 minutes longer than the original supplement with the same effects?

I really would like to know who decides on this stuff, and why don’t they ever talk to us here?

Another, and probably better question would be, does that designer who puts these things together actually think that this sort of thing is fun gaming? The rewards in this game have been such garbage, and continually such garbage that I’m not surprised so many players have moved on.

This is just another case where someone at Anet had a pet project and nobody could be bothered to actually consult with players, as usual. Profession based drops appears to be working as intended so we’ll continue to get the “talk to the hand” treatment, as usual.

For those who think that 25 to 30 drops per character is not enough data, you are more than welcome to disprove the theory from the OP. So far he’s done a great job of presenting a reasonable method to collect data, and share it. Y’all can argue all you want about magic find and which class is better at tagging mobs but as things stand right now, it’s pretty clear that 5/8 classes are losing out on valuable drops, just because someone at Anet had a pet project.

I would sure like to know who that was.

Players asked for these recipes again the last time we saw a Crown Pavilion event. We got the usual “talk to the hand” response. This leads you to believe it’s possible Anet will bring these rewards back?

They wont, because this “adds value” to crafting, even though it does not help the New Player Experience at all. As usual, many of these ideas come straight from the Daily Show. The ideas, are not fully thought through.

From the economic point of view, did this game really need new material and gold sinks, such as what these new collections really are?

Is there really so much gold floating around that you need all of us to go make 2 feast recipes?

Is there really so much Ascended crafting material floating around that you need all of us to go make 3 complete sets of armor? The return on that collection awards an Exotic item? Seriously?

Ok, the rewards on these collections are a different topic, and I’m sure everyone’s favorite economist didn’t design the collections either, but really, was there an economic need for them?

Attempting to track people manually isn’t effective. If we suspect it’s getting unwieldy we have a numbers of options to make insider traders (and them only) lose large quantities of money. We’ve done this before to destabilize insider trading as an idea and will likely do it again.

My imagination is running wild based off this…

We’ve seen some of this before. Remember Gift of Wine? That may or may not have been an intentional sting, but there have been instances of price-driving information getting out that have turned out to be completely untrue.

It was pure market hype that fueled the trading in grapes before the Gift of Wine was actually available. I should know. I was one of the guys doing the hype and getting rich selling a lot of grapes.

Fair enough. At least it’s a response. Better than what we get in the WvW or Crafting Forums.

Regarding badges, if you want to make money off them, buy siege equipment plans and upgrade them via the forge to superior versions. I did that quite a bit, and with enough badges, you can get 10-20g out of them.

That’s not a particularly good use for skill points.

Minis are regularly eaten by the forge.

What do you think about the mini market in terms of supply and volatility ?

It’s not one of my favorite markets.

I actually know why this is. To date, there has been no “consumption” of minis. They just continue to flood the market from one side, while most people just don’t care about them, and most minis are stored in crafting storage slots up to a maximum of 250.

One of the latest “features” (I’ll use polite terms) will start to consume minis from the storage slots and trading post market, giving the remaining items and daily production some value.

How about a gift of food/boosts every level? Just a small selection.

That would introduce the topic, and reinforce the idea regularly.

Now, about Badges of Honor please?

Thank you Psientist, I understand what you’re saying about currencies produced by stable workloads but to use your own comparison of Karma and Badges of Honor, at least Karma is consumable and beneficial.
