Spirit Shards as a newer player

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Skill points or whatever they were originally called were automatically converted into spirit shards on lvl 80 characters with excess points long ago when shards came out.

The only way you can grind that 200 (and i’ve done it many times) is dailies, and converting tomes of knowledge on lvl 80 characters into shards. Basically how i look at it, I can make 3 from a daily, and about 5 a night in WvW from tomes.

gotta grind, and i don’t know any other way to do it faster with little time spent (I only play after work and kids go to bed, so my time spent daily is limited to about 3 hours a night)

I don’t think they’ll change the durability runes… they are a decent gold sink/proof sink atm and are not the issue. The have to get to the core of the issue and I’m not going to give them any ideas.

The issue is within the professions, and that’s where I believe they will look at.

Yeah we’ve never been able to craft them. I was thinking about the 4 stat sets that originally came out around the time of dry top. Forgot about those magi , etc stats that were primarily from karma armor.

Has the dungeon armor stats by dungeon changed since launch, I thought knights was one of the CoF options previously, but looking now it’s only at Arah.

Sry rampagers was core. Dire came out later, with magi, shaman’s, marauders is relatively new.

Just take any t6 mat from crafting a base legendary, those are core equivalents. Zerker (blood), Carrion (bones), Knights (armored scale), Cleric (totems), valk (fangs or claws? can’t remember), rampagers (poison/venom) etc

Rest are not core. Apothecary came out first as secondary when they released the Karka Queen island event.

I think Dire and the like came out with the release of Dry Top and Silverwastes or around that time?

The outcome is the same…duh! Winner wins by 2 points, loser loses by 2 points.

Yeah, a few posts later I thought the 2,1,1 would be interesting because the point allocation would be different and it could lead to teaming up on the top dog of the match.. Guess ya missed that!

I’m surprised they have not added in a /serverchat option. It would have been very useful if implemented long ago when servers meant something.

And why not let the enemy nameplates say the server they are on… like if Kaineng is linked to TC … and we are green… why not allow enemies to see TC invader, or Kaineng Invader. Couple that with buffs and claims on keeps and towers … add server name, provide the lil’ guy the chance to show there stuff.

With love!

Playing a backline druid is no where near dead weight. Sometimes i watch the frontline of the zerg enguage and never down a single player. Given… if they do this maybe twenty times you might get a down once in a while, but most commanders dont have the momentum to push through and actually kill someone. This is where the backline, mainly rangers and high dps classes come in.

Dropping to the side, rangers can be very effective in killing anyone in mid or backline and even sometimes downing 4-5 frontliners as you push through. Just because ranger doesn’t drop boons that get immediately stripped away in the first push, doesn’t make them any less effective.

Those are not valid points to support any argument. It comes across as pouring out of tears and nothing more.

While I find rangers useful for what they are supposed to do… you don’t make a zerg based on a pin sniping core. On top of that, far too many times, I see rangers not contributing nearly enough, yes it’s the back lines primary job to dish out dmg and finish downs. It’s the front lines job to break heads of large groups (preferably producing downs). Good players do this. Bad players do not. You say most commanders like your in t8, but guess what bad players exist on many servers. So do good players. it comes down to players paying attention and owning their roles, and being accountable for making sure they produce (whatever there job is). Meta’s are built of large group play… the defacto in past was that ranged dps … ele’s and necro’s take the cake because they spam AoE continuously. Rangers may be able to hit 5 people with piercing arrows which would be great for single file pressure. But dropping many AoE’s within a vacinity can produce more output to localize dmg output.

Think about how groups move when they engage eachother. They try to break lines through enemies groups to divide and conquer, they move from the ‘callout’ to the area you want to lay heavy dmg to force the enemy to scatter, where they can regroup /reset and push back. They want to create safe areas for there teams survivability while laying pressure to move the opponents force in a manner they don’t want to go in.

This is why other professions can do this better than the ranger/druid. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those guys who hates on rangers at all. I think they are very useful in a good players hands for many reasons already listed. Personally though … that playstyle heavily favours pick teams versus zerg v zerg. If you have 25% of your group on rangers… and you are losing constantly on engages. It’s not just the rangers fault, but the people that are responsible for laying out the dmg altogether because the group is under-performing or not applying enough pressure. Typically rangers get singled out because of the nature of the arguement at hand.

To prove the validity of rangers and druids being in the meta, you would then have to prove how they excel over the other dmg dealers of the meta (GREN). Basically tell how Rangers are superior to either Ele or Necro … and provide reasons which prove the ranger excels at areas they provide to the group. If you have some nice healing plus the ability to lay heavy AoE… maybe try pick on the ele role and see what kinda comparison you can come up with.

Hell change the meta, and provide the supporting reasons why ‘new meta’ can beat old meta. I’ll give you a relative yet unusable example… in gw1 GvG scene the meta heavily favoured 2 monks, 1 E/Mo, 2 Wars, 1 Crip shot Ranger flag runner, and 2 ‘x’ either DMG, or boonstrip characters of choice. Most guilds ran with this … until out came the 8 man ranger spike team which could split squad 4 / 4 and down players easily in a time spike build. This changed the meta, and soon out came the Air Spike 8 Ele group (or 7 and a boonbot), then came the 8 IWAY Warriors… with each iteration of the meta, came a new iteration where the others could defeat the old meta because they excelled at something better. Find the ability to articulate that and theory craft, and put it to work in a real engage. You could be surprised with the results, but don’t be disheartened when things don’t work out, back to the drawing board.

This place likely is filled with theorycrafters, I’d bet most guild leaders who build comp all do it. Find a place for rangers in a new meta. That’s real power.

Get that d20 ready … if it rolls 19-20 leave glicko alone (gods have spoken)…. otherwise reset it.

And stop giving players the ability to break things about your game mode. Find alternate avenues for funding. Server transfers are a joke. It’s the only game mode where a server even matters, and that’s slowly being ripped away as well. Give alternates for us to provide income, while working towards a system that prevents things like bandwagoning. You can’t do anything about timezones players are in who play your game. So some night capping will always be present… but you can stop a server from … not participating for 2 weeks in order to open up and load more players in. Just stop allowing it.

Being toxic is an attitude, regardless of scoring, tocix players will play like that… in this form, in a double team, in real life even. Anet’s not here to fix people. They are here to promote more play. You will never be able to curb coverage issues or population imbalances, also not related to scoring. The reason I support the idea of taking down the king of the hill, is because the game in it’s current state promotes the double team on the weakest of the pairing. More often than not, 2nd place will go score easier points from 3rd place in a futile attempt to catch up or retain 2nd. That focus needs to be shifted onto the top dog in order to have any real competition in WvW. The double team is not a week long battle, the double team lasts until the mighty falls, then shifts to the new top dog, so stop pretending like it’s going to create a vortex of A vs B + C the entire week. The only way that occurs is when a server is able to handle a double team and still maintain the lead. But battles of attrition facing multiple forces rarely favour the defenders. It sounds like it would be more engaging, instead of letting things hit t3 and remain that way all week (boring).

Why do you think 3 way SMC fights are so enjoyable, and EBG is easily the most popular map? That may be my personal opinion, but I know I’m not alone … it’s a lot more enjoyable to engage in that play. When you no longer have to pay attention, skill takes a huge nose dive and the engagement of the game is … well … not even present.

I’m not saying this is the be all end all, but just an idea I prefer support and am happy to let bygones be bygones with those who oppose it for their own reasons.

Rose coloured glasses man …. I see more people commenting on how they do like it, and offering suggestions to improve or try out some things.

GH is the only server getting crushed due to a reason completely separate from the ‘skirmish’ system. Maybe phrase your suggestion in a more receptive way … such as:

Skirmishing heavily favors servers who can win during a single time slot (or at least it keeps servers competative). On the flip side, if a host server has a terrible linking, there is no way for them to be competative. Is there anything that the skirmish can offer to support a situation where a smaller very underpopulated team (due to poor linkings) has a chance to compete at all? Is there any benefit to a skirmish versus the old system? Will Anet implement anything that can help this situation?

(GH would be crushed even harder in the old system fyi and your comments to date have nothing to do with skirmishing – not the duration, not the scoring… solely linking which is another thread on its own)

Looking at the score evolution of Gunner’s Hold shows, at best … mediocre ppt across the week, only taking the ppt lead once or twice for a very short time (less than 1 skirmish) on the 25th.

This is because the server has 1/4th the population compared to the other 2 servers in the matchups.

So you’re initial comment isn’t a complaint about skirmishes (the thread), it’s just venting frustration at the poor server linking GH ended with (unrelated topic). GH (eu) so to speak seems similar to the DH (na) of past linking. Yet on their relink (DH) they now are doing much better. Some crappy weeks ahead, but could be fixed next linking.

Back to topic of how skirmishes are doing, and how people feel about them

EDIT: Question to Anet… what type of data are you looking at with these skirmishes and how are you looking at utilizing it in future. Is there a potential for a 5,4,3 week… or will you implement the catchup feature on the last day? What will that look like?

If Gunnars Hold is not stronger than the opponents in any timezone … it won’t matter if the opponent wins the night battle… they got you the rest of the day. You can see the affects of a weak night crew server with a strong NA presence in NA matchups, fighting strong night crew weak NA time period. The gap is reduced greatly because they still can effectively win the same amount of time periods (skirmishes). Mediocre in all time zones will only get you mediocre results.

Ranger/Druid Not part of Current Meta

Hexinx.1872

TC needs more boonshare mesmers (not just mesmers in general) … coupled with some high output dmg dealers. There already plenty of guards and rev’s. Silly thing is most people don’t actually follow the meta too hard – even on meta builds. When guilds plan to raid, they try to take advantage of some of the optimal builds and professions. Hence why I’ll run on guard/rev or necro for guild runs. But love my war + necro for small scale. Try not to bring those to guild runs because … well … it’s not taking advantage of the optimal composition you can plan, build around and work with in team play/guild runs. i find the constant turnover of squad members makes this job to build around much more difficult for commanders who assume people are running one thing, when they may not be.

What’s important to you? Personal perfection, or group synergy? Sounds like you personally enjoy more of the small scale playstyle, but ‘want’ to help the commander and their zerg.

Also … noting you are one of the last to die is moot. I’d be impressed if your the last to die while outputting high dps… but I see alot of people who run around and play their survival while not laying down nearly enough output. Myself included when I’m on guard, in a commanders party… because I want to be sure the commander doesn’t go down and I provide the right boons at the right time.

I do see some amazing small scale builds that fit right into roles… because those players have honed there skills to be able to fill those roles. In fact, there’s a scrapper who I find lays out impressive frontline dmg and support while he just runs around tagging everyone. And he’s in one of your 3 guilds btw …

I find there is an abundance of support classes playing, with a tiny amount of actual dmg players. Everyone busy supporting everyone else …. no one killing the enemies.

To me this tells me to log on my necro … a I’d be hard pressed to find any commander that would turn away a necro with so little dmg output on the table atm. If they want proof, I’d be happy to pvp them… but lucky for Necro … they make up the N in GREN.

One thing I definitely agree on … is that I believe if a player ‘knows’ his profession and has a deep understanding of the traits, they can play far more optimal then throwing 3 lemmings into a meta build with little to no knowledge. I’ve seen plenty of decent small scale teams do very well against larger forces including a staff druid who I saw take out 3 opponents. My jaw hit the floor, and while I have never made a ranger in all gw2 history, I was tempted.

I feel bad for the druid/rangers… because there are some really good players but over the years i felt they always been the ones people hating on. They more optimal for pick teams and team play…

sieges should use supply when fire

Hexinx.1872

Explain to me how this would work … using 1 superior flame ram on a door as an example.

Your post makes it sound like a ram would require supply on every hit of the door, which makes no sense to me

You dont fire a ram only with the fire skill :P ram shouldnt use supply but the defending ac should.
So if the defenders build 20 ac, 4 ram, 3 ballista, 5 shield gen they burn down the supply within minutes but 2-3 acs cant harm seriously the supply management

And there also should be new mastery what gives you “charges” after used supplys. For example you can hit 5 times with 1 supply

Would each arrow on the arrow cart drain supply … or just per skill used?

I think objectives themselves should have personal siege cap…. depending on structure. Similar to how keeps can hold more supply than towers. Keeps could hold say 15 siege while towers only allow 5. This would give those 2 guys still a decent shot at defending … I mean they only will utilize 2-3 of the pieces anyways… while impacting the amount of over siege happy one can be. No need for that cata, counter treb, plus 2 shields gens + 4 ac’s … for say north outer gate hills.

I’m all for draining supplies faster, but why not just incorporate a treb into your attack, and have someone drop cows on supply caches?

I can only imagine this relates to attacking a keep, and one like hills, garri or ebg keeps. The rest of the structures are fairly easy to open regardless of how much siege someone places and towers don’t have a very large cache.

I never understood why the guild hall is so large, like huge … yet they never implemented any sort of purpose to it outside of making it look pretty (empty). I could understand if say … they became home bases, and opponents would need to breach it in some epic battle, but why make it so darn huge and empty (to the point you need waypoints) if it’s relatively under utilized and servers little purpose outside of dailys and gold sink.

Surely we didn’t need a huge map to skirmish in our tiny miniscule arena. Surely those nodes are not going to require huge vast areas to traverse.

I main a war and use him for most purposes (mainly cause he has 100% map completion so easy travel) … but I WvW main on my guard, roam main on my necro (also spvp main) … and my thief only ever gets time spent learning after I get trolled too hard on my main by other thieves.

Funny though, I main’d a rev for quite a while in WvW and he also has the farthest progression in HoT story. (I’ve spent less than a year on this account) but gearing was important to me so I crafted 2 full heavy sets of ascended, and gave the others rings/amulets.

My necro is full exotic presently only because I haven’t gotten ascended vipers rings/amulets for him yet

I’d estimate playtime spent in this type of breakout:
War/Bers – 50%
Guard – 20%
Necro/Reap – 15%
Rev/Her – 10%
Thief – 5% if that (made it cause I want to unlock the ascended staff)

That’s my opinion, so it’s likely very difficult for them to make that kinda change … any change will have a big cause and impact. I think anet is more worried about making a change that could hurt large player bases… so they in turn … let it be (or perhaps they just don’t have sufficient data to support making a change like that… yet).

Crafting Recipes

I think it depends on what the recipe is, and what the ingredients are. Some are much more common and widely available so it makes sense to use more of them, otherwise they’d be worthless and the TP would end up swamped with ones that are never going to sell.

I was going to suggest realism as an argument too, until I came across the Bowl of Hummus which is apparently made from:

  • 1 chickpea
  • 1 sesame seed
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 head of garlic

(For those who don’t cook IRL most recipes call for 1 or 2 cloves of garlic per portion, and a head has about 8-12 cloves.)

I’m more curious how much hummus that would actually make … I mean 1 sesame seed is delicious but not very filling, maybe that’s what the 1 chickpea is for

I thought it was just me … I went in to BGBL no queue when I got home from work … (I always start by doing my dailys) … saw 1 other guy on the map sitting at the vet… we waited for about 10 minutes… I got bored, no vet spawned, started to head to s camp but my skills were flashing … I was wondering why I was lagging, thought ‘oh god, I’m probably gonna get steamrolled by some zerg, this lag is huge) went back towards the vet … try to say chat to the guy, no chat would appear. At this point, I’m thinking my game client must be messed up, let’s do a restart and clear this issue.

Restarted, 30 seconds later load into LA, press B … BGBL queued to 16 or so … so I head to another map and do daily thinking wow … I must be missing some amazing run going on there. When I was just there and saw no tags, no groups forming, nothing … just one guy without a guild tag. So i watch the map, and the queue … it goes up a bit over the course of 10 minutes and no objectives are flipping. At this point I thinking, man what is going on… come to forums and see …. this thread.

Something was surely messed up on that map …. but what was it?

Toughness is useless in WvW. Im at 2600 or so and still getting hit with 6k vaults and 4 to 5k heartseekers.

There’s a reason glass meta is still a thing. Why not go glass and let your profession mechanics do the work?

That’s pretty good … I aim for higher, but I play on a heavy armor class (usually aim for about 3k-3.2 depending on my role)), and by looking at your post history I’m thinking you play a ranger? medium armor class? For mediums i try to get up to 2700 for WvW for a little more durability but that could just be traits, runes etc difference from me to you.

This can have different effects on how ratings will change. If team A consistently beats team B— but only a little— their ratings will be split apart faster than before. If team A steamrolls team B consistently, their ratings won’t split apart as quickly as before.

Keeping scores closer together through the game’s mechanics keeps moment-to-moment gameplay more competitive and interesting. But, if teams facing one-another that really belong in different tiers have more similar scores than before at the end, their ratings updates won’t reflect that as quickly.

So this part confused me … if Team A roflstomps Team B… it makes sense to keep them closer together?

I’m not sure how to make sense of that… wouldn’t a team who crushes their opponents be better suited to move away from easy pickins? ignore T1, cause there’s a roof, but say in T3 NA, shouldn’t a team likes the YB pairing be pushed up because they are steamrolling there opponents? The way I read what you wrote, says they would receive more of a split if they kept it close… can someone please explain this a little more clearly so I can understand the logic?

So how does the game code respond if a player is in a squad in a WvW map… and logs directly out…. but the commander leaves them in the squad so the rest of us all seee this guy who is offline. Does that get removed from the calculation or does the capacity count the total squad? I would assume offline accounts have some mechanism that ‘kicks’ them from both the map and the pop count.

And what is the red tape reason behind hiding the active numbers on each map? Is the worry that people seeing the actual numbers will play less, and only go to where the more populated maps are? Cause i think we’re far enough into the game that it really doesn’t matter. If people are still playing WvW, they won’t all of a sudden stop because only 2 maps get decent numbers while the rest are very unpopulated. or is it because the actual floating numbers of active players on a map isn’t actually calculated and anet are just unable to provide it.
