revenant – Hoogles Von Boogles
Mesmer – hoogelz
I don’t feel confortable with the demon word on revenant, because religion. Is this name “demon” important for the lore and revenant? Could this be switched for other stance name? Thanks guys! I want to play revenant but not confortable with the word “demon” around. Sorry if this sounds strange to someone
Sadly, yes. It represents an old enemy, Mallyx, who was the final boss of The Domain of Anguish. It doesn’t refer to anything biblical, just a gorilla monster, a really hard to kill gorilla monster.
In the old bunker meta rotations were 100% more important and would punish rotational errors, and getting a kill actually meant something.
I kinda disagree with this. In the bunker meta there was one rotation that was clearly optimal: Send bunkers to points, stall. The revenants had the job of trying to kill and were the only real ones rotating. It was boring to play and boring to watch for me. Getting a kill back then only resulted in a capture if the bunker couldn’t hold out for 30s, which happened a lot. Getting a cap however pretty much meant game over because nestling one of those away from a bunker wasn’t something that happened quickly.
Now rotations are vital, more than ever, and they’re quicker than ever. If your team is messing around fighting off point, you’ll lose a capture point. If one player dies in a team fight, that’s now a pivotal moment because now it’s time to scatter and regroup. Going for bonus objectives is crucial since you can no longer have a bunker stall for the game and it can sway a games favor. Having a player on a point for like a minute could be detrimental since gives thieves the upper hand when they jump in and you’re one less some where you could have one more.
The meta hasn’t been developed yet too, so I won’t say this is going to be how it goes but I do think that for the next season rotations are going to be faster and more important than they were previously. I won’t miss the bunker meta, it wasn’t fun for anyone and I enjoy a lot of the changes. Some more could be made ofc (bristleback and trueshot are big names there) but having 15min games that end in 100-30 points aren’t my idea of a good game.
Edit:
There’s also what a lot of people have been saying, which is that it’s unranked. 90% of people treat this as team deathmatch (insert codement voice here) and just go for kills, giving no thought to rotations.
I forgot I hated off season, I don’t know why it exists. To allow for the devs to find a balance patch? It would make sense if that were the case but that wasn’t the case last season and doesn’t account for the potential need for continuing balancing as the season goes on, in order to prevent exploits like last season’s infamous bunker meta, or the prior Vamp-Rune Cele Ele meta. Even if it does need to exist to continue anets weird system why does it need to limit everything to unranked? Unranked really needs a change to accomodate Off-Season.
For one, there is little to no matchmaking system, especially since ranked is locked off. I’ve been put on teams with great players against teams of 5 pugs who aren’t even dragon rank yet. How is that fair? Or to have a great player on a team with 4 pugs of equal caliber. I had to apologize to them because I was on the team of 4 competent players and I felt bad. I heard that it was based off the number of unranked games played and while that’s better than none, it would favor putting new players with league players because both would be at roughly the same number of unranked games. So that’s one thing that could be improved on.
The map selection aggravates me. I main revenant, I don’t care if it’s over-powered, under-powered, im bad at it, etc… I’m having fun, or at least I’m trying to. The reason this is relevant is that the maps that aren’t in ranked (Khylo post balance aside) do not work with revenant. Sword skills (and also enchanting daggers) do not work on Skyhammer, they will attack map objects. Conversely, revenants can abuse the orb on Spirit Watch as super speed and skills like Unrelenting Assault don’t cause the orb to be dropped. I also simply do not like the maps, there’s a reason they’re in unranked and not ranked. I know they need to exist in unranked but I’d like a selection button of “ranked maps” and an “all maps” under the conquest selection.
Finally, there is no indication of when the next season is. It’s an easy request, I’m sure that information exists somewhere online but it should be in game instead of “This season has ended.” You know, like before last season.
Maybe it’s too much to ask that off-season have minimal difference to on-season. Climbing the ladder is fun and I get that you need sometime to reset the thing, but I don’t get why the reset period has to suck so much.
Yeah, True Shot is undeniably too strong…. I see how it hasn’t been nerfed.
Lots of you are arguing its stronger than Kill Shot. True Shot is weaker on hit, lower on cooldown and cast by half by each respectively yet is only half as strong at 30 adrenaline, so there’s that.
What I think is the more obvious comparison is to Mighty Blow. Mighty Blow and True Shot both have a 3/4 cast time, lock you in place during cast, are combo finishers, a base damage of ~650 and can hit multiple targets. However, Mighty Blow has a 1s longer cooldown, is melee and has a scaling coefficient of 1.75 where as True Shot is 2.5. So True shot is just stronger. Why is it done this way? Why not scale it down to be at most as strong as Mighty Blow? It’s just bad design this way.
With the readdition of pvp items that use the forge, I think that would be a swell idea with like 0 people against it.
Thank you. Some one gets it. No longer do I end games and have to say “well that was boring”. Games that came down to a timer every friggen time, but not once were either teams close.
No rev is not useless, don’t listen to all the people complaining. Power rev still works wonders and if you put yourself in the right position youll do great. Viper rev is also still very strong, just don’t 1v1 a necro.
So despite the horrendous amount of QQing done by people I think the game is fairly balanced. There are a few obvious outliers, however that could be addressed. Keep in mind I’m some omnipotent gw2 god and I don’t know everything and the meta has yet to be developed. I’m also going to deny some QQing, sorry my fellow revenants.
Warrior
I don’t know warrior. It’s in a lot better of a place then it was but that’s only really due to the removal of pure bunkers. It doesn’t seem like warrior got buff it needed, but I will say it’s still terrifying when I see a rampage pop in or when they put 16 burn stacks on me. I’m not sure war will be meta but Rom has proved me wrong before.
Guardian
For the most part it’s in a pretty good place.
Revenant
It’s no longer over powered in certain aspects but it’s pretty weak in others. Still needs a lot of work to fix. The 5k auto attack is gone and should be gone, please stop complaining.
Engineer
Again I don’t play this lots but I see more so I know a bit more. It feels a bit strong given it’s quite defensive, mobile, and can pack a hell of a wallop
Ranger
Pets, pets, jebus the pets. This is a big one, because it’s literally the only problem here.
Thief
Thief is fine. I can’t figure out why people are complaining. I’ve been killing these things left, right and center, but they’ve been killing me too. It’s how thieves should be. Oh wait one thing:
Mesmer
Mesmers in an okay place. I’m not happy with the nerf to alacrity but something needed to be done, I personally would have limited access to it. Here’s some gripes
Necro
Stop complaining about necros, people. Start bringing some condition defense. Necros are still pretty squishy, since there’s not a lot that can be done about cc on them. I’m also not saying they can’t be toned down
Elementalist
So your unending defense went down? Oh wow that must feel horrible. While ele got hit hard in pvp it didn’t get killed. Fresh air tempests are something new that I really gotta get used to. 10k bursts from overload air are ouchy. It’s roll got taken out, who know it might find a new roll?
All in all I like this balance. It feels okay, I haven’t encountered anything besides dash thieves that I’ve been disappointed by.
For the most part these are very good suggested changes especially in the Jalis department, cause of the mention reasons that legend is useless. I disagree with the change to elluding nullification having no icd but it definetly needs to be reduced to like 5 or so, cause at 10s its worthless. Also I disagree with the heal thing. Not that it’s unnoticeable because it is, but if that’s buffed the heal on energy trait needs to be buffed as well. Also charged mists is a wildly underrated trait, used right you get 25 might easily.

This skill shouldn’t target structures and neutral enemies, already made a bug report. Battle of Khylo seems to be the worst offender in here, because there are so many objects and even invisible structures Precision Strike projectiles seems to randomly target.
My friend and I had good chuckles seeing where it would go. The best so far seems to be if you use it at mid, cause it will go anywhere. It seem to like to try to hit the bell.
Probably reducing the radius to 300 , increasing projectile speed by 200% and prioritizing players should make it usable.
Yes, yes all the yes. Also unbug it
It doesn’t work. It doesn’t friggen work. I moves at 2x too slow, it only throws projectiles half the time, and it doesn’t work on downed players. Are you serious anet? This skill is in like alpha mode, I like the idea but come on! Make sure it works before you release it!
Of course they do -.-
1) amber - got through fast, took like an hour.
2) emerald - pretty easy except for the vast number of leavers
3) sapphire - I don’t remember having any issues. Got through with out a hitch
4) ruby - there was no real improvement in player skill from amber to here probably due to how grindy it is to get here and I got here after my Christmas break
5) diamond - appropriate skill level mostly. A few players there from when taking an amber got you pips that didn’t belong.
6) legend - usually good games. Still some bad players, like a druid that kept going far and dying far to a DH trap burst....
I noticed the pip system made no God kitten sense I hope it gets better s2
Oh also the meta was absolute trash. It was boring to deal with
I’m at wits end with the devs not fixing blatant issues. So here are the outlying issues in the simplest form.
I appreciate finally altering sword 2 but cmon. There’s a lot that have been issues since BWE3 and haven’t been addressed. If I missed anything feel free to post.
Warrior got nerfed
That’s what it looked like… Anet you nailed it!
From what I saw not much is changed, I don’t play enough war to say if there was a big change but it kinda looks like war needed a way to not be pigeonholed into taking discipline but I didn’t see that. Actually I saw very little good. So can a main war tell me if there is a chance for war to be back in pvp?
I’m almost entirely sure Roy hates horse people. I’ve found a lot of cool things to do with a Jalis Ventari build but Glint can do both their jobs better as it stands
Guard sword damage is low, it however provides a lot of defence so it balances out pretty well
This is one of those things that I’m shocked anet didn’t address. Druid would be okay, with the buffs and nerfs. Usually my death screen against a ranger is 90% pet DMG and then bleeding, likely from the pet
Put beast mastery on with quickness trait or taunt, it isn’t too hard to land all the hits, resulting in a nice 10k burst all while the druid tanks. Not to mention the bristle back itself has 3200 toughness
Is anyone else having an issue with deaths charge missing the final hit on moving targets? Right now it seems that if your target it moving even slightly the last hit doesn’t go through. I’ve had it used on me in pvp and it just didn’t hit me even though I hadn’t dodged and ran in a straight line.
Oh and those stats are perfect btw. Sinister or viper or berserker, all good
Specialisation wise I like retribution, its fairly good. The other options are invocation and devastation. I don’t think salvation is worth getting. If you’re running mace I assume you have corruption.
A good alternate weapon is, well, all of them. If you’re condition either staff or sword/sword would work. It sucks there’s no alt condi weapon which sucks.
For legends I like having assassin + Mallyx for condi. Assassin provides a ton of mobility and damage with phase traversal and impossible odds + autoattacking. Generally my combo is phase traverse – axe 4 mace 2 axe 5 mace 3, switch to Mallyx then hit with a combination of one or two unyeilding anguish and banish enchantmemts, then pop embrace the darkness hit mace 2 and then resist the darkness because upkeeping it isn’t working.
Uh.. Best weapon for rev is a different story. The legends are just the utility skills. I personally like shiro for that, but Glint is probably the best for raids
remove/reduce the healing delay of natural harmony cause no one is going to stay in a measly 240 range for 2 whole seconds.
You can move it during the delay
Doesn’t it just cancel the heal if you do that?
No, it doesn’t. And to the original comment, sure you can move it during the delay, but why the fact that it costs another 10 energy just isn’t worth it.
Yeah, I knew that. Its 30 energy however to do that and with the cooldown on the move, you can’t pop it in and heal and move to correct.
It’s also worth noting that despite there being a bunker meta in pvp and a desire for healer in raids, neither are used for both.
Yeah those two need work still, which sucks cause I think they’re fun. My two cents:
Jalis
Ventari
Strap in there’s a lot to improve.
No soldiers? Really? Like I get settlers and sentinel even cele but soldiers? I’m so confused. The new amulets are a little scary that they may become meta but we’ll have to see. At least we won’t have bunkers and I can watch games without passing out
It seems to be an MMO law that, given sufficient time, every MMO becomes like every other MMO, regardless of what it set out to be. This is why I generally dread expansions, rather than cheer for them.
[I’d say that HoT is one of the best expansions I’ve bought because it did the usual ‘introduce a bunch of MMO-homogenous stuff that I don’t like’ but at least didn’t trash most of the core game into the bargain as many do… I guess it’ll be the next expansion that does that….]
This is exactly what I fear given the trend. I loved HoT (balance aside) but it hints at a terrifying trend, that they’ll just change the game to make a small amount more
I’ve played gw1 then gw2 and it’s been good. Hell it’s been great. I’ve done and loved everything. Recently somethings happened with me and this game however, I started to become frustrated with the game or rather what has happened to the game from one simple realization. The initial design concept of gw2 has been thrown out the window. Whether or not you believed it did or didn’t work, it was what the game was initially built on and slowly has been removed. It wasn’t with HoT that this happened (although this was a big jump), but rather with additions it was slowly pulled out. I listened to the gw2 manifesto again and all of it has been destroyed with one unchangeable thing, the art.
“We don’t want our player’s to grind to have to do fun stuff.”
Anyone that’s done HoT knows this isn’t true at all. While I’m not opposed to the grind, HoT is one hell of a grind. I probably did Dragon’s Stand two dozen times just to get a mastery to progress the story. There’s also the issue of ascended gear being needed for raids, as the dev’s had also said. Something that either costs a ton or takes a long time to create. This is in itself contradicting this philosophy. The grind isn’t new however, as legendaries have shown us, and this wasn’t unexpected so let’s proceed.
“We want the combat to be fun and engaging”
While this varies from person to person, if you’ve recently played pvp or wvw or raids even, this one speaks for it self. Spending an hour wailing on a brick wall for an hour in the hopes it dies, while it does nothing to you is the current state of all of these. In pvp no one dies because that’s the meta, wvw same issue. Pve will always have this issue because once one person solves the problem, it doesn’t take long till everyone does. This could be solved by creating a complicated AI that changes randomly to situations with a plethora of solutions, like say a boss that gets more aggressive while your in combat but resets the anger when it cant see you, so stealth could finally be used in pve. Just spit balling.
“We don’t want a quest where it’s just text saying what’s going on, we want you to see and experience it”
Okay, I know it’s not formally in the game, but all collections in HoT are just this exact thing. I don’t mind this because the precourser system was terrible before this, but again it’s another small aggravation and another direct contradiction to the initial design. That’s it for the video, but I remembered a lot more of what was said that has cause larger issues.
“you’ll never make an item that is a throwaway item”
Bloodstone bricks, enough said.
“we’re not going to turn around now and say we changed our minds and will be selling experience potions and scrolls”
While what was being referred to was the gem store, these exact things have been added to the game. Masteries kinda undid this, but also xp boosts can be bought in the gem store.
This old thing
http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1078544-GW2-official-Blogpost-about-the-Holy-Trinity-must-read (couldn’t find the original quote)
I’m sure you all remember anet saying there wouldn’t be a holy trinity in gw2 but if you’ve done a raid, then you know all to well that the trinity is back and strong. Certain classes are favoured far more than others for each roll, so as time goes on this is just going to get worse.
Special mention- leagues
These have been done so poorly, it’s mind blowing. Here are some basic issues, ignoring the obvious balance problem.
1. Lose of pip(s) when you have someone on your team dc, regardless of win or loss.
2. Win mutiple pips when you bring someone of lower rank with you.
3. Win a pip when you lose to a superior team.
4. No surrender option.
5. Doesn’t show tiers and parties at the start of the match.
“Legendary armor will be a reward in raids”
I know this is premature, but we have yet to even see it. This is one I know they’ll add but I’m just salty. I just want to know what it looks like, I probably won’t even get it. I’d like to know what’s going on with this. I thought we were getting this with spirit vale.
The design of the game that made me and so many others love the game seems to be gone. I understand that a game requires a lot to survive the 3-4 years it has gone on, but by going against the core idea of the game is not the way. GW1 survived the time it did through the simple method of a growing world. I bought all the expansions, I regretted nothing. The new maps helped a million in gw2, but there have been far fewer released in the past years than in gw1. I know graphics is an issue with new game development time and HoT was gorgeous but there wasn’t much in it. They also made changes to things in the games lore, which is just confusing to me, like glint’s origin.
A lot of this changes can be rectified without getting rid of the good things brought by the new content. Many players have posted amazing solutions, and other issues, in the forums too. Sadly there has been a widespread silence from the devs, especially in regards to the pvp section of the game, which they should be reminded that they are sinking a lot of money into. With all of what has happened and what hasn’t, I’m left with a single question for the developers: What Happened? Do you not care about the state of your game? It’s in shambles right now, and I don’t want it to be this way.
I got bolt via 90% pvp, and tp working (took a long time). It was boring but I did it.
If you play it right it’s not but it is harder. IMO the problem with thief is that you can’t gank, like ever. Between the reveals and the tanks, its hard to pick someone off. Warrior just straight up needs a buff. I don’t know what but it does. It was easy mode, but now it just does everything worse
this game is a snoozefest, double tempest double chronobunkers it’s a just a cluster kitten of immunes and cc’s with heals back to 100%, anyone who feels different either plays one of those classes or is a sadist.
Whenever I see this I switch to reaper. Otherwise the game is just tedious, win or lose I’m not having fun.
Necro and rev have an advantage but no. It would eliminate the teamwork and impact strike wouldn’t be as useful. Tbh downed state makes the game a lot more fun, especially when you get a clutch stomp or revive
Tempests + bunk guard/shout guard, scrapper and reaper is kind of a bullkitten comp due to the afformentioned issues. It’s not a balanced game mode, many have explained the issues in great detail but the devs have ignored us. It’s especially aggravating since they did the beta weekend and ignored the issues. NPCs don’t heal ooc so you need a healer, stealth is so powerful in it but it needs mobile application, so a scrapper is needed. >.> really annoying since the game mode is a lot of fun but is so unbalanced.
Condi necro wrecks the current meta so hard with all the boon conversion. Dodge, get feared, use Mallyx get chilled. I once one shot a viper on my reaper with corrupt boons (terror + chill). There wasn’t a kitten thing he could do
While I like the website for what it does I do agree people depend on it and assume it knows all, and forget or are just ignorant to the idea that there could be other builds that are just as or more powerful than what’s up there. Hell, all people need to do is remember past tourneys and the builds people ran. Without balance changes Nos went from condi to power (this was like a year ago) and guess what the new necro meta was? It’s annoying but that won’t ever change until people learn to think for themselves and actually learn their professions.
Condi rev is still viable although I do anticipate it going out of favour by next meta, but I quite like DPS for the swiftness and fury
Another build to tack onto the worst builds:
Old phantasm mesmer. Summon some phants and a duelist and do nothing. They would do the work no problem. And with that extra health on your phantasms, you couldn’t kill them before they got you. (yea and those days when all clones and phantasms not having los so the mes can cast them whenever)Another good build:
100 nade engi. Now that was stupid fun.
Omg I forgot about both of these. Agreed though, I hated phants and 100nades was a lot of fun.
I would enjoy that. Tbh though I kinda liked the original shroud look with the green barand skills only. It didn’t look as clunky and I always knew my HP going in
I remember a time when Bull’s Rush GS Wars were considered op
Hehehehe yeah I remember that. Back before people learned the dodge mechanic of the game, myself included xD
For the naming thing its pretty much random. I’ve played thousands and I still don’t know.
For capturing a point there are 10 ticks. When capturing a neutral point it “caps” at 1 tick per second. If the point is controlled by the enemy team, it goes down at 2 ticks per second. It is independent of the number of teammates on the point. You only ever need one person to capture a point. It also, conversely, only requires one enemy on the point to stop the capturing of the point.
For the last point, usually the enemy will send one to their home point, 3 to the mid and one to your home. Always check metabattle.com once every couple weeks to determine what role each professions will likely be running.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask!
I kind of agree on the idea, not the follow through. Elite specs should in someway nerf to core spec. Taking virtues and trickery (and others) away would make some big changes to their builds, but for chrono, illusions isnt exactly the strongest spec in mesmer. That goes to dueling. So I thought it would be interesting to remove something from the core spec, like what reaper and DH did. For example, in chrono take out distortion to put in continuum split, thus changing the mesmers gameplay and play style. I agree the implementation is kinda sloppy.
I know what you mean. I was once running away from a warrior on my mesmer. I opened my portal, I saw him do up the Velcro on his Nike’s. The bugger got there before I did. Another time I blinked up on to a bridge in Legacy but the warrior threw his axe at me, cutting the bridge in half forcing me to fall to my death.
Anet please nerf warrior. They’re too strong
In the spirit of the new year I thought it would be fun to look back on pvp over the years. See all the good and the bad nerfs that have happened. Title says most of it. What have been your favourite and least favourite builds in the game. These can be from anytime pre HoT, post HoT, beta HoT, hell even beta GW2 but please clarify when.
For me my favourite would be sword/dagger thief from a year ago, pre specs. I may have never been good at it and it may not have been the hardest or most viable build to play but it was fun. The mobility is insane on it and its 1v1 potential was amazing. Not to mention it was a lot of fun to watch on twitch. Seeing scizor sneak caps away while toker jump in to contest in fights where one false move won the fight. Ooh the nostalgia.
On the other hand, around the same time, there were turret engineers. The worst build. Just throw down a bunch of turrets and bunker down, cause they don’t take damage, you won’t take damage but they’ll deal all the damage you could imagine. It required no skill, or ability or anything. Just throw em down and wait.
What were all of yours?
I would love one or all of these.
There is a hate for thief. Unless your nailing it and your teammates aren’t kittens youll get flamed. I’ve seen thieves carry games and get blamed for losing even though someone was fighting off point the whole game or just running into 2v1s
I would love templates. Just make stuff easier, like say I’m running mesmer or guard and 15s till start my friends say “you’re bunking us right?” and Im specced for dps >.>
I use dual swords and its a lot of fun. Most people use shield since its pretty much a third heal skill, and therefor a get out of jail free card, but grasping shadows can go through that making it a counter. Having the cc + a block you can use while moving makes it a pretty underrated weapon.
Short bow. Something ranged and condi.
