Whoa there on the CPU temperature at idle. 80C, even for a laptop is awfully hot. If you have already blown the fans and gave the laptop a general cleaning without opening it up and it is still generating that much heat; it is time to open that bad boy up and really give it a good cleaning and probably toss some new thermal paste on the processor since that is most likely the biggest culprit here.

What laptop do you have? There might be a detailed video on Youtube that shows you exactly how to take it apart and clean it while applying new thermal paste.

Yeah an i5 3570K is what you’re looking for if you buy before June. After that, Haswell launches which, as SolarNova mentioned above, the i5 4670K is the processor to get in terms of the i5 series.

Personally, I would wait out the one month or so for the new platform and efficiencies brought in by Haswell.

I’m not very familiar with either Intel embedded graphics drivers or AMD drivers. I would try this driver:

Even if it says its not compatible, try it anyways, you can always switch back into safe mode to revert the driver.

If you take the time to overclock your processor that’s grand and I applaud you for getting extra performance for free, but that architecture on that processor is a little dated. Even my machine overclocked to 4.1Ghz doesn’t compare to an Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, or AMD’s Piledriver and (hopefully) upcoming Steamroller processors running at the same frequency because my processor is using a slightly less dated architecture than your own.

If it were me, I’d wait until Haswell debuts on June 3rd before upgrading. At that point I would grab an i7 4770K or an i5 4650K depending how much video/audio encoding you do.

Dual Screen question

The best solution to your problem is to make your right screen the ‘main monitor’ like people have described how to do above, then use some multiple monitor taskbar software to give you everything you need on your left monitor to act like a normal main monitor.

I used to use ultramon until I found display fusion. I believe display fusion has a trial for 30 days or whatever, so I would try it out. Its a really nice piece of software.

Can i run this game?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Depending where you are at in the game, I can see frames dipping down to around those given above in more crowded areas. The GT 630 should be more powerful than the 9400GT and given the fact that you aren’t running at 1080p that should help as well. I would say you can run the game at a mix of low and medium settings.

Since that is back up hardware, personally I would overclock that to some extent. I’m not sure what a Q8200 or a GT 630 can do in terms of overclocking, but I’d give it a shot.

how well will this run the game?

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Without any modifications (overclocking) to what you have posted, the processor is solid, however the GTX 460 is definitely your bottleneck. The 400 series is closing in on 3 generations old, while there is nothing particularly bad about the 400 series IMO, the GTX 460 is going to start to show its age at 1080p.

Now, if you overclock those parts, especially the processor to 4.5Ghz+, WvW will shine at a whole 30FPS (average) in the worst case scenario of 100+ man battles. Even processors like the i7 3930K can’t do too much better because the GW2 engine, for lack of a better phrase, could be improved.

With my experience, 1GB on the graphics card is plenty for all the GW2 textures and what not, however, you will notice some other games…cough BF3 cough will eat up all of that and then some. The GTX 460 might not be able to rock GW2 at highest settings, it should be able to rock a solid medium-high mix. So, if you plan on playing games at best/ultra settings, prepare to be disappointed.

Notes about overclocking, make sure you have adequate heat dissipation on your CPU and GPU if you plan on overclocking them. A solid place to learn how to overclock those parts is overclock.net.

If I had that gear, personally, I would toss a 24/7 overclock on the processor to 4.5Ghz and take everything that GPU will give you on a 24/7 overclock and run that GPU into the ground. Once it dies, upgrade to something newer in the current series, 7xxx for AMD and 6xx for Nvidia. To note though, the rumor is that Nvidia is set to launch the new 7xx series in the next couple of months.

To answer your question of the speed of RAM, go for the 1600, there isn’t too much of a noticeable difference, but its worth the extra buck or two for the increased speed.

I was going to say wait for Intel’s new processors (codenamed Haswell) to come out before making a purchase, but then I saw that you wanted to buy a prebuilt computer for 600 bucks that plays GW2 on high…

Like Johje Holan said, what resolution do you want to run the game at and how much FPS do you want when playing the different modes of the game. With 600 bucks you’re going to be hard pressed to find a CPU and GPU that can do WvW (worst case scenario with 100+ people) at 25FPS without overclocking. Realistically, if you can’t take apart your old rig and use it’s hard drive so you don’t have to buy/acquire another copy of windows then you need to raise your budget to 700 or so. Even then it’s going to be tight.

This question’s answer depends on your CPU/GPU as well. While I know very little about resolutions above 1080p (besides multi-monitor resolutions) I do know that the more pixels you have to draw, the better your hardware has to be to get a ‘smooth’ FPS.

With that said, give us your CPU and GPU models and we can give you a better idea about how your hardware will perform.

Is there a way for a free world transfer

in Account & Technical Support

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

You have a few options. The one above I have never tried, but I do know that if you get enough in-game gold and convert it to gems, you can transfer, which is kinda free.

On another note, there was a time when ArenaNet made it free to join a low population server for free. So, depending what server your friends are on, you could wait around for one of those free transfer deals. However, that may never happen again.

P.S. You can guest on 2 different worlds and be a part of another server. The restictions on this are that you can only choose 2 servers every 24 hours and you can’t WvWvW on the guested server. So, if you and your friends never consider doing WvWvW, then you can just guest to them every day which is basically 2 more clicks than a normal log-in.

Yeah, the Titan LE intrigued me when I heard about it, but then I heard it was the GTX 780 and was less excited. This also got me thinking though. The Titan launched not too long ago at a price of about 1,000 USD. Now a few months later the GTX 780 (Titan LE) comes out and its speculated to be half or a little more than half the price of the Titan for much more than half the performance of the original Titan.

Marketing strikes; give a graphics card a cool name, instead of GTX 685 and people will come.

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Well since GW2 is all about loving the CPU, I would say it would have a fair difference. Especially considering the FX8350 is top of the line. Worst case scenario in WvW with 100+ people you should be able to attain close to 30FPS if you set the culling radius to max and detail to low. PvP the processor shouldn’t have any issue. PvE the only problem you might run into is large dynamic events that will make the CPU chug a bit similar to the WvW experience above. I’m not sure what you are currently experiencing , but that is what you can expect with the FX 8350. Note that I have not dealt with this processor, I’m just basing my observations from others who have posted on these forums relating their experience to the processor. A search should find a lot of threads about how people compare the FX 8350 and i5 3570K and i7 3770K.

Magic Find Question

Ilithis Mithilander.3265

Your maths doesnt work out, first a 2 out of 1000 chance of finding something is a 0.002% not 0.2% (that would be a 2 in 10 chance).

If you have a 1 in 1000 chance of getting something and then you suddenly get a 2 in 1000 chance of finding it thats twice as much chance to find it (essentially becoming a 1 in 500 chance)

So if you didnt have any magic find you’d find that item once every 1000 kills, with 100% magic find you’d find that item TWICE every 1000 kills statistically.

Granted in reality having 100% MF doesnt guarantee double the loot simply because the way rolls are done but its fairly close to halving the amount of kills you need for any given drop.

Not to be a huge kitten and point out the faulty maths, but 2 out of 10 chance is 2/10 is .2 is 20%.

If smoothly is 60FPS in all areas of the game all the time at 1080p and max graphic setting, nope, no one can achieve this except maybe the titan super computer. If its 30FPS in all areas of the game at 1080p mediumish settings, then yeah, you might be able to rock that if you overclock the 965 and grab at least a GTX 650Ti Boost or 7790. However, if you’re loading the world, as in you can see the game world around you, and you’re getting 5 FPS for a few seconds when you can move your character; this is normal for GW2 due to poor optimization of the game’s engine (the GW1 engine heavily modified).

PC shutdown after around 5 minutes

Before ‘investing’ I would make sure of a few things.

-Download Prime95 and let it run for 30 minutes (I usually run it on whatever one says it gives the most heat generation) or how ever long it takes GW2 to mess up your computer.
-If your computer survives that without shutting down or giving any errors when it is testing your CPU then grab a GPU tester as well, something like MSI’s Kombuster. Running both of these applications at the same time will yield max power use and max temperature. If your system survives this then it is safe to say its probably not a lack of power or overheating (aka no need to invest).

Judging from your description it sounds like something Anet tossed in the recent patch screwed things up for your system. Perhaps try reinstalling the game (delete the gw2.dat and redownload it).

Suggest on building a new PC

by the way guys, so for the MOBO i`m aiming for an Asus P8Z77-V which costs 180$ then -50$ from Microcenter`s discount.
What`s the Digital CPU, Power Design, improves CPU power or something?

also for Graphic Card, should I go with an AMD Radeon 7950, or Nvidia one, but i dont know which, can you suggest me some?

I`m mainly planning to to play GW2 and WOW sometimes.

In that case the HD 7870XT is what you want since its enough to play GW2 and WoW and offers the best price/performance as of right now.

I’m not entirely sure what you are trying to ask about the ‘Digital CPU’ and ‘Power Design’. Are you perhaps trying to ask how much wattage the CPU is going to take so that you can get an adequate power supply?

How good would a computer like this run Gw2?

Lol where was the time that everyone on this forum told people that cpu was not good, need to change the cpu, nobody talked about gpu because it only did 40% of the job, and now all the sudden the gpu is more important ? Guess summer is coming
(And no i was not referring to you Limey, more to solarnova and co)

That is because the CPU in the aforementioned box isn’t terrible, its actually one of the top end AMD CPUs. The GPU in this case is meant for a media center PC or some generic workstation and will chug when playing games (besides FB games).

I also recommend at least a GTX 650Ti for when playing at 1080p and getting 30FPS at mediocre settings around most of the game.

Question about overclocking

As I don’t own an Ivy-Bridge CPU I can’t guide you through the steps, but I do love OCN for their guides and community. I used a guide on OCN to start overclocking my CPU/GPU and it was an awesome experience. Here is one that looks pretty detailed and gives you more information than you would need, but its a good subject to know.

Judging from the minimum requirements for GW2, I would be surprised if the installer let you install the game on the laptop. If you have the laptop handy, try it out but don’t expect much. If you’re looking to buy a laptop for GW2, that is not the one you should be getting.

The Return of Cut Scenes

in Flame and Frost

I was going to make a thread about this myself until I realized how many people are for the old style GW1 cut-scenes.

Initially during the first cut-scene like the GW1 style, I knew something was off (and better) but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then, about half way through it, I realized people were talking like in the normal cut-scenes but the camera was moving about in the game world. I got super excited all of the sudden and somehow that brought me back to the original GW1 mission cut-scenes. This feeling of good and nostalgia came back to me. Overall, this is the direction cut-scenes should be going to. I’m sure your GW2 cut-scenes will have their place, but I really think ArenaNet should expand on what they have started with F&F cut-scenes.

All of those graphics cards are more geared towards media center PC’s. The lowest Nvidia card anyone should ever get for gaming is a GTX 550Ti or a GTX 650Ti. The normal GTX 550 and GTX 650 cards are basically right on the border between a media card and a gaming card. For the budget price/performance the GTX 650Ti is a solid card.

Do you have a backup graphics card you can use to see if its just a faulty graphics card. I know no one ever wants to hear that, but I’m not sure what else to suggest.

Delete the gw2.dat file. This clears up 99.9% of the space taken by the game. Then you can launch the client to install the game again if you like in the future.
