GW2, getting the GW1 Titles

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’m sure this question has been asked may times, but i found it was latest answered two years ago, so things have changed, but is it possible to get yourself up to atleast like 40/50 by replaying my beloved GW1? do people still pay GW1 or is it a ghost town? surely it will be difficult to get to that without any players.

Nothing significant has changed in the last two years. Then (as now) it was played mostly single player, with people around to trade and/or party up for tougher content.

It’s not at all difficult to get to 30/50 in the HoM (that gives you max tangible rewards for GW2). Getting to 40/50 is more difficult, but also soloable, as is 50/50 (more difficult still).

I’d strongly recommend asking GW2 players you know if they have things like spare minis or mats that you can use (following the guide linked by Greener, above) — you can pick up all that stuff on your own; having donations will, however, save you oodles of time

Is anyone else getting the message, “Unable to initialize 3D output. Please verify that you have installed DirectX9 and an updated video driver”. I was just playing yesterday with no problem. I tried to login this morning, and I now have this message/issue.

Nothing changed in the game, so it’s likely that something else is going on. Try restarting your computer and see if you still have the issue. My guess is that some other program didn’t properly close a video-related file and that’s preventing GW2 from ‘accessing’ it. Restarting won’t solve the underlying issue (if there is one), but it should remove the symptoms.

Good luck & please lets us know what you find out.

I’ve tried many things.

1. First to engage. It still ran half the map to get to her.
2. Highest damage. I literally soloed it while she ran back and forth and it ignored me. Unless dps stat wise.
3. Lowest health. Didn’t seem to matter if we were both undamaged. Unless it’s stat wise.
4. Tried many variations of who landed hits when and where.
5. Field of view. Well when I’m the first to run to the boss and it just decides to run halfway across the field to attack someone else who hadn’t even engaged it yet, eh.

So I think I’ve done enough testing to consider toughness as a suspect. You’re welcome to your own theories, I’m just bringing it to the table and taking a guess. Somethings happening out of the ordinary possibly caused by some sort of gear stat slipping through. So either tanky or dps stats. It should be looked at so the wiki can be updated accordingly.

Those are good tests. I don’t have any theories — I just don’t like to “assume” a cause without researching.

If ANet works on storing & retrieving player creations, I hope they start with storing traits + skills first, then offer armor & weapon stats, then upgrades (runes, sigils, doubloons, etc).

Once they are done with that, then yeah, I’d like the same treatment for fashion.

We know using the /stuck command doesn’t really work in story instances.

It really does; in fact, it’s only ever moved me in story instances. In the open world, it never has done more than log my position.

That said, it’s horribly inconsistent. I’m not at all sure why it will sometimes move you and other times it won’t.

Regardless, it’s always worth trying because it takes only 30 seconds after typing it out to see if it helps. (Plus, it logs an error for that location — over time, ANet has fixed a lot of such bugged spots.)

Just to expand on this, any minion does this job. Necro pets, the druid pet, mesmer illusions … having a lot of them, as your party should, makes Old Tom easymode.

Good point. I emphasized the gummy worm because its fixed position makes it easier for novices to, ahem, get behind the idea. Rocky The elementalist’s earth elementals (from glyphs of elementals) are also effective tanks.

Having many of them is also nice for the level with Social, since a single worm isn’t that helpful then.

I think how many you ‘need’ depends on the group. More is helpful, although it generally leads to a drop in DPS relative to the group’s potential (then again, preventing people from needing a rez + needing constant healing is a huge DPS boost).

So, sure, OP, get your group to pop a few ‘pets’ so that everyone can use them to block. If you have someone that tends to stay put, they can choose the worm; those that are more nimble can dance behind the various illusions or other pets.

How to expand home instances

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

I wonder how placement works with the 5 different Home Instances? Either placement is dictated by ArenaNet, or only 1 Home Instance could be decorated.

i mean, they seem to be able tl pump out new maps every 2 to 3 months surelt tweakimg already made instances a little so houses could be made in them wouldnt be so big of an issue ^^

Apparently, there’s a lot more effort involved in releasing a new map than starting with an old one and “tweaking”. (They’ve made comments to that effect a few times.)

I’ve nothing against improved home instance. Neither do I have anything to say in favor of them — I’d just as soon any efforts to improve housing go towards guild halls, not personal instances that lots of people never see.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There have been several threads about here & on reddit. The consensus seems to be that you can work around it and sometimes prevent it, although both require a level of patience that few have after dying in Trib Mode.

Work arounds include

  • swapping to bomb/slingshot back & forth
  • keeping a few healing potions and using one (so you are “less dead”, allowing you free movement)
  • waiting it out

Preventative measures include:

  • taking your hands off the keyboard as soon as that ‘final death’ occurs
  • deliberating suiciding when near 0 lives, so you can start with enough wiggle room (also not usually an option for Trib Mode).

None of that removes the frustration of encountering this bug, so ANet should still fix it. I hope that the ideas help someone to get through the experience in the meantime.

The game has many mechanics that influence a foe’s choice of targets. Toughness is only one. Other possibilities include: lowest health, nearest, last hit, last to have landed a hit, nearest within a field of view, does highest DPS, and any combination of those.

Before assuming that ‘toughness’ matters, make sure you eliminate the others.

he OP hasn’t produced any evidence that the lack of hype matters that much. It’s clear that they want more hype; it’s not clear whether it matters to the majority of players.

idk pll quiting the game coz its stale feels like a legit reason to me

And people quit the game because it was over-hyped, too — they heard about good stuff, came back, found that it wasn’t what they expected, and left.

People quit for all sorts of reasons, including lack of hype, too much hype, the wrong sort of hype, and because they liked the game better when they weren’t as familiar with all its ins & outs. It’s hard to say which one of those is the most important.

It’s really only fair to say that the OP wants to hear more about what’s planned and that the OP isn’t alone in wanting that. It’s not clear if it’s going to matter in the long run.

Bug in TP prevents sells and new listing

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Idk how it happens but I know that some items are listed below the required price and prevents further listing or buying.
I think it would be nice if the TP returned the items or allowed new listings and sales.

It’s not a bug nor does it ‘prevent further listing or buying’.

The original version of the TP allowed people to offer any price for any item. Later, a ‘floor’ was added of “vendor + 1c” which was changed to “vendor +~18%” — the first to prevent someone from listing for lower than vendor and the second to prevent anyone from netting less on the TP than they would get from the vendor.

When those changes were made, there were millions of below-permitted offers. ANet decided to let them be. Over time, plenty of people removed the offers; some didn’t. At one point, ANet decided to clear some of those listings; they got most, but not all.

What you see now are the remnants of that history.

However, there’s nothing stopping you from selling an item at whatever price you like or making an offer, save for the restriction that you have to net vendor price.

If you see anything else, use the in-game /bug reporting tool to document it (ideally with the screenshot of the TP). And, if you have time, also report it here.

tl;dr not a bug; it’s just left-over from the time when you could make below-vendor price offers.

Don’t panic. Your party comp is fine — tour team needs to work on its existing synergies and “footwork.” My “casual” team doesn’t ever insist on anyone bringing a particular build (at worst, we might ‘strongly’ recommend a skill or three or a weapon swap).

  • If everyone sticks close to Tom, a druid can keep them all alive throughout poison phases, indefinitely. (I’m not very good at druid & I’ve managed it from about 50%; I could probably go longer, if people stay in range).
  • Your reaper can drop a gummy worm Flesh Wurm next to Tom (not on top of him). People can stand behind it, since it blocks the projectile poison (not all of his attacks, tho). Also keeps them close for the druid (see above).
  • You should have plenty of defiance breaks, so Tom should be stunned frequently, lowering his DPS, increasing yours.
  • Thief blinds are also useful.

In other words, without making a single composition change, you guys can finish the fight with health to spare.

Some people have a use for 6+ guilds and are willing to pay gems for it. Some don’t. It’s nearly impossible for this to impact existing guilds in any sort of meaningful way, except that some (such as myself) would be active in more guilds.

At this point, it’s up to ANet to decide if the cost of designing|implementing|testing|maintaining is worth the potential benefit to players (QoL) or ANet (gem sales from RL cash).

5 tickets is fairly standard for the older sets. 3 is the cost for a soon-to-be-retired set or a recently-returned-but-newer set.

My point is they made it part of the announcement like it’s some grand deal when it’s really not. Black Lion Tickets are already RNG enough. It feels ridiculous.

My point is that I disagree. It is a grand deal, since previously, they weren’t available at all without spending a huge premium on the TP.

It’s consistent with what they’ve done before. It has already lowered prices 30% for those willing to purchase on the TP & made it available for those who have stored up tickets waiting for an opportunity like this.

In short, it is a big deal; it’s just not the big deal some had hoped for.

I can’t find information or the answer to this anywhere. I want to know before I make a purchase of an outfit on the off chance it gets a discount. Thank you

There are always random sales, throughout the year; there’s no predicting what will/won’t be on sale.

If it happens that you make the purchase “just before” the sale, contact ANet support and they will usually refund the difference. (There are some exceptions, for various reasons.)

Speaking for myself, I try to divide my purchases into two categories: things that I will never buy at retail prices (just about everything) and things that I will consider paying full freight for. (Well, plus things I won’t get unless free.) For example, I love the Storm Bow and I have gotten good use out of it already, whereas I am glad I waited for the Cook’s outfit to be on sale.

I agree that it isn’t a good buy for new or old players.

They must sell, however. They have been in the store for a long time.

I don’t think that indicates anything really, I mean it costs them nothing to leave an item in the store, it cost them more to remove an item.

It doesn’t cost them anything ‘extra’ to remove an item now — it’s part of their standard operating procedures to add/remove, and to decide which to remove based on sales.

So the fact that it remains there is a good indicator that some people are spending cash on it.

Bring back LS S1 content as guild challenges

in Living World

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’m all in favor of new guild missions. I loved many of the LS1 metas. I do not, however, think it’s best for ANet to force themselves into trying to bring back old battles.

First, remember that part of what made LS1 so epic was that it was transitory — we only had a few weeks to figure out how the battle worked, developed strategies for victory, and explain to a map full of PUGs the tactics for making it work. None of that is going to be true for Guild Missions; they have to last for, well years.

Second, everything looks better (or worse) in hindsight. Some of the LS1 events had some frustratingly terrible mechanics. Obviously ANet can do better if they bring them back. However, maybe they can do better still by starting from scratch. In essence, the Silverwastes final meta is the Marionette fight, re-imagined; it’s a lot better (in most ways).

tl;dr more guild missions, yes please — it’s long over due. However, imo, I’d prefer that ANet not worry about old content when developing them.

Instead of having so many guilds, why not the guilds consolidate to form a bigger one?

Because it’s a social issue, not a mathematical one. Not everyone likes being one of many; not everyone gets along with people just because they share an interest. As an obvious example: everyone posting here has an interest in GW2, but we don’t agree on whether it’s useful to allow people in multiple guilds.

If multiple raid guilds combine to form a large one, you easily can find more people to raid with and gets a lot of things done.

That’s only theoretically true, only if we treat members as interchangeable.

Guilds are social organizations; they require commonality of interest and similarity of temperament, as well as overlapping play times, and many, many intangibles.

Some guilds are training guilds, built up around people who are patient mentors and some are organized by less patient bootcamp sergeants. Some guilds raid & fractal. Some are interested in speed clearing or selling raids. Some have people who like listening to the same music while raiding and some have people who don’t want to listen to music.

The main point is the guild is designed to be 500-men large,

Sorry, no, they weren’t. The maximum size is 500. They were designed to exist at various levels of membership, with 50-100 looking like the sweet spot.

if people are under utilizing that, it is not anet’s issues, it is players created issue.

Again, guilds are social organizations; there isn’t any sort of efficiency that can be applied, because there’s no set of best practices that applies to all guilds.

Plus, there’s the practical matter of how people would even learn which guilds have similar enough interests to their own, decide if the membership is compatible, and then decide how to merge (who leads? which guild hall do you use? do you change the guild mission night to accommodate one guild or the other or add a night?)

In the end, like it or not, some people would find it very valuable to be able to join more than 5 guilds. It might not be easy for ANet to implement; it might not be your idea of the best use of ANet’s limited resources. But there is no work-around for the minority of players that agree with the OP.

I can’t think of a reason Anet wouldn’t implement this other than technical reasons, which means the chances of it actually being implemented are slim to none unfortunately.

What technical reasons? Unless they hard-coded in a limit of 5 guilds, there’s little that has to be changed (except some minor alterations to the guild panel — those do seem to take more effort than players might think).

Still, I agree with your conclusion that it’s unlikely to happen:

  • If it’s easy, why wouldn’t they have implemented it already?
  • If it’s almost easy, why would it be prioritized over the 12646 other popular suggestions that are also “almost easy” to add to the game?

Then again, I would have bet 500 gold that we never would get salvage-all, due to technical limitations. So, my guess is as bad as anyone else’s as to what ANet will actually make time to introduce to the game.

tl;dr forum software is wonky and we’re stuck with it. Work around credentialing issues by logging out before starting any session and starting over.

The first thing we should know is, alas, the forum software was built by another company, with which ANet no longer does business (and, I believe, it no longer exists). So whatever annoyances we have… we’re stuck with them.

So the main question is always: can we live with these QoL issues? or should ANet invest time into finding a new 3rd party forum tool? If you’ve ever been part of the due diligence for something like that at a company ANet’s size, you know there are a lot of factors; it’s a distraction just to consider it.

Regarding the specific issue:

It’s actually worse than described by the OP. You can be logged on already, opening multiple tabs, and starting to respond to them. At some point, your credentials can expire, but you won’t realize this until you press ‘submit’ (or ‘preview’) and see the logon page. If you’re not very careful, you’ll lose your draft and lose track of the pages to which you were trying to reply.

The work-around I use is clunky, but 100% successful.

  • Open the forum home page.
  • If not logged on, log on.
  • If logged on, log out. Close tab, open the forum page again and logon.

Doing that before any extended session (including external searches with google etc) ensures that I never encounter any sort of “login again” hiccup.

Yes, I’ve been hoping for this since launch.

This gets suggested every couple of months. (And there will be a couple of posts to the thread stating that the game would be better with only one guild slot.)

they only accept crafted items, not random rares

Good rule of thumb: if it has a rune|sigil, it’s not crafted.
(There are also ineligible L65 versions of some items; the requested items are all L80.)

They know they haven’t fixed it and that it’s important to some people, which is why it’s noted on the Curated Issue Tracker

  • Items: White Mantle Scroll back piece cannot be infused.
  • Status: Investigating = “we are aware of the issue, but haven’t yet found a fix for it.”

One change I would like to see...

One thing I would like to see changed is that dungeons become easily duo’d or skillfully solo’d. I loved the dungeons, I loved the layout, the enemies, and the stories in them. I want to do them all over again but hardly anyone plays them and when they do everyone just rushes though them.

Dungeons are already soloable. There are a few that have special mechanics that require two, sometimes three people.

And if you want to take your time, you’re not alone: just post an LFG and be clear about your plans.

Should GW2 Have an "Offline" Mode?

I imagine this would be really easy to implement too and easier on the servers since the load would be just on the client now. This would also allow one to actually play the game without being connected to the internet.

You have a powerful imagination. In order to play the game, you’d have to have a copy of the server data on your computer, keeping track of all the moving artwork, all the NPCs, all the collision data, and then some.

Even if none of that were true, the game was designed as an MMO, not a single-player game. It would take huge amounts of time to restructure the software to make this possible.

And that’s before dealing with potential abuses — what’s to stop someone from manipulating data while in offline mode, before reconnecting.

And finally, it’s not clear to me how this would be good for the game. It’s meant to be massively multi-player, not occasionally.

I can still stand on certain patches of ice and reproduce the glitch, so no, it doesn’t appear to be fixed for all surfaces. A perfect place to reproduce it in W3Z3 is at the balloon surrounded by a rectangular spike field.

Next time you’re there, if you have time, please use the in-game /bug reporting tool and include a description of how QA can reproduce the issue. That will make it easier for them to check out the in-game data of what took place right before your report. The easier it is for them to learn what happened, the sooner it can get fixed.
