I think the problem isn’t any specific class. It’s class stacking.
One DH on the enemy team ( if my side has none ) is doable. 3 DH on the other team makes for a probable loss and a miserable match.
The same is true of every other class. 3 or 4 thieves on the enemy team is a probable loss for my side. That is, assuming they are able players.
2 or 3 Necros together is hell on wheels. The condi tidal wave will wipe a team fast.
I could go on, but the point is that the classes are all so strong that a stack of any given class is a serious advantage.
A seconday problem is that heavy armor carries no real penalty. Warriors often move faster than my Mesmer. Hell, even some guardians can keep up. Plus they get armor sustain and dps. The whole theory of wearing light armor is that it allows kiting around the tanks.
I think it may be time to quit. I love the game… but I don’t need to be this angry all the time… working on a 15 game losing streak tonight. It makes me crazy and mean.
Having ground out my legendary on my alt account; No, it most definitely was not worth it. I finished because I said I would and I couldn’t walk away after having spent so much time and effort on the project.
After horrendous stomps, being farmed by esl teams, 65+ loss streaks… it became a matter of principle.
PST you can get the vision crystals from reward tracks.
A culture of nastiness has been fostered or at least tolerated.
Many players don’t come to play a game. They come to vent there angst. It’s not playing to win, it’s playing to troll. It’s living for the 5 v 1 and the instant stomp.
Then, they say oh you’re crying, (salty.)
There’s this belief that , “I have a right to do whatever I want because the game lets me. Besides, my boss yelled at me today so I need to spend 4 hours stomping noobs to make myself feel powerful.” No wonder the “community” shows no signs of growing.
If ANET wants PvP to grow.. it needs to be a game, not a chance for people to use newcomers as punching bags.
LOL, thank you. I’ve been stressing on dh grabbing mass kills in Capricorn.. dodge in and drop traps, insta win.
I needed this laugh.
There simply aren’t enough players to support an “elite” legendary queue. That is, unless you want to wait an hour for matches.
That’s the problem with wanting to be elite… pretty soon people go find something else to do and you’re out of luck.
As you can see in the picture I have good connection and more than enough computer power.
Still I’m seeing 10 second game freezes. It looks like a server-side problem to me
Oh, I like Helseth. He is an outstanding Mesmer. The attitude is shades of early Arnold Schwartzeneger, though, Arnold did it better.
That’s not really what the post is about. The whole presentation seemed to lack a kind of “pro bearing” for lack of better words.
I don’t fault people for wanting to win. I do fault wanting an unfair match and enjoying stomping over people without much risk to oneself.
I find that cowardly. Besides, it’s a fast way to drive people out of PvP .
@SliEagle
That’s kind of the point I was driving at. More at the reasons why.
@Ross Biddle
I think the value of honesty depends on your age bracket, unfortunately.
I agree. ANET did mention that it was “considering” a Solo / Duo queue for S5. I hope they make that happen.
This Coliseum match was grossly unbalanced. So much so that I volunteered on map chat to sit out to even things up.
Instead, we decided on a dance party at mid. It was fun, but it’s a sign that the problems of unbalanced matches are commonly understood. 3 of blue deserted after the first group fight.
Coliseum encourages roll-overs by it’s design. Sadly, I think that’s deliberate. ANET should take a more careful look at ensuring matches are reasonable.
I love this map, playing before even a virtual crowd is addictive.
Same, now I’m getting a message that GW2 is full. I’ve never seen that before and suspect there’s some server issue going on.
If ( a certain person who shall be un-named) died, thief will certainly see the nerf hammer.
By “exploit” I mean farming easy wins against solos with an organized team. This is also probably worthy of being called “trolling.”
Oh, so they’re playing within the confines of the game and not actually doing anything wrong what so ever.
This is also called Playing to Win.
It’s decent rhetoric though!
It’s called trolling when it’s organized teams stomping PUGs for amusement and profit.
Gee, I wonder why new people don’t stay long.. By extension, I wonder why ANET has to keep getting creative to make queue times stay within reason? That seems to have been a major motivation behind the matches in s2 – s3.
Quite possibly it’s all the “playing to win.”
By “exploit” I mean farming easy wins against solos with an organized team. This is also probably worthy of being called “trolling.”
We need solo queue back. This would mitigate a lot of the farming and exploiting.
@OP that was season 2 and 3. We have been told that S4 is trying for even matches with similar skill levels on both sides. Most of my loss streaks ( 68 + at one point ) came partly because I was too kittened off and too tired.
I watched Helseth’s new video a little bit ago. It’s very useful. Thank You, Lord Helseth.
What struck me more than that was the attitude and it took me back to this last “world finals.” One example of what I mean was the final award presentation.
In most team sports, you have a winner’s interview. Pros almost without exception say something like “I’d like to thank ; my sponsor [//list], My wonderful team [//list] and my family [//list].” Of course you’re going to give your sponsor air time whenever possible, right? That’s what they pay for.
It’s normally followed by something like “You know? Everyone out here was really great and I feel privileged to come out on top this time.”
At the GW2 worlds, I saw a lot of trolling happening from multiple sources. Sure there were obligatory handshakes and smiles. There wasn’t much of the kind of “sportsmanship” I expect to see.
Trolling and attitude do please a certain segment of the population. I don’t think they will lead to being taken more seriously as an “Esport.”
ANET should consider whether that’s the best path for ESL and for the wider game.
Druid is extremely tanky. It’s even more so than the previous auramancer ele. This needs a fix.
fix the bug in the page
Just came from being stomped into the ground 3 separate times by the same 5 man premade. They laughed while they did it.
Same old, same old; zerg and exploit.
It’s really time for solo queue to return!
No, the reality is that certain builds work better than others. True, someone very familiar with a build can play well enough to overcome a disadvantage.
It’s sad, really. I have had to take up Sword/Shield and Staff on my Mesmers on both accounts. I dislike the style, but I need to not get trounced.
Now I play a light armored warrior instead of a proper Mesmer. ANET has spent years now trying to simplify builds and the game generally. They may ruin the game if they go too far.
I’m loving the Coliseum. Arena fighting is really the essense of what pvp is about.
That being said, the map is too easy to zerg. It’s also too advantageous to heavy armor classes. This should be the top map, but it’s inhibited by the death match aspect.
Long fights are very preferable to the old zerk meta. “The one who lands the burst combo first , wins.” Long fights bring skill into the equation.
Mesmer focus or offhand sword. Neither is particularly useful in pvp. Elementalist warhorn is almost never used.
I’d change the points to be larger. Sure the fight runs longer. More importantly it doesn’t give an excessive edge to heavy armor and DH.
Hail ANET ! Those who are about to die, salute you. Eternal Colliseum rocks..
Agreed, the circles need to be larger so DH isn’t so dominant on point.
It is interesting that this is a complaint thread about complaint threads. You might want to consider the ethics of that.
I think part of the point is to reward teleport. In a game scenario this open, heavy armor classes have a major advantage. Most wars move faster, (on average, ) than my light armored Mesmer. The “terrain” mitigates that a bit. It’s a pretty good shooting scenario for rangers as well.
-EDIT-
After spending some time on the map, on both accounts; This is the best map you’ve ever produced, ANET. GG. Playing before the crowd is what pvp really should feel like.
I maintain that a solo queue would make it even better. It would mitigate class stacking and farming.

Here’s an idea, ANET:
Release monsters into the arena. Let them be unallied if the game is relatively even. They support a side that’s losing badly. This would be historically appropriate. The Romans actually did this. Make sure it’s more or less random and not on a fixed timer.
You could even have intro to pvp matches that would be players vs npc beasts. This would showcase the arena and give noob players a taste of success.
Colliseums really did look like that. This was circus entertainment with “scenes” that would be quickly changed over the course of the day. I was something like a series of movie sets to give variety to the killing. I think ANET got that part right.
The strong visuals are and should be in the surrounding area. The crowd seating and the spawns for the artifacts would be permanent structures and so, more elaborate.
It would be cool if there were, say, 3 scenes possible. When you entered the colliseum, you’d never know just which battle scenario you were going to get.
Colliseums should be bland and temporary battlements etc. That’s historically accurate. Sometimes arenas would even be flooded for sea battles. This was circus entertainment on a grand scale. Scenes would change several times in the course of a day.
Now perhaps they could make several sub maps and you never know which one you’ll get.
I’m just over the moon with playing before the crowd. This needs to not be just a death match though.
The map has even worse LOS restrictions for Mesmers than is normal.
Sadly, I love the concept and the map. the crowd is awesome. The problem is that this is the second coming of courtyard. It’s death match after death match with trains of either dh/war or thieves zerging around together.
This is the least fun of the maps when it really ought to be the best. I have to admit, I’m angry with ANET at this point. I don’t understand the desire to go back to death matches and the “fun” of regular 400 point stomps.
The map is too open. This gives major advantages to Rangers. Also, mobility is a non issue. So, there’s no real penalty to running War/Guard.

Here’s what I had to say in another thread:
“General impression: Wow, just wow. THIS is what PvP should feel like.
positives: Crowd feedback. Best move anet has made in some time. Environmental theme, too cool. Love the Harry Potter skyboxes.
Negatives: The crowd motion is rough, it looks like it’s trading alpha on two textures to create the impression of movement. Whatever the case, it doesn’t look good. Red and blue particles, cute idea but too small to be seen well.
-edit- I predict that this map will have the same issues as courtyard. Namely; premades zerging and camping the other team’s spawn."
The farming is already in full swing. It doesn’t make sense to create a map intended for death matches, then allow premades vs solos.
The map is so cool, yet it’s ruined by allowing teams to exploit. I’m pretty sad about that overall. Here’s my last 3 matches:

I like the idea of the bell becoming a commune. That would prevent DH from being such a dominant class for the situation.
Also, a straight 25 points for every bell is a great idea.
Phantasms aren’t used because they are excessively slow and unreliable. They are, more or less, just expensive clones.
As to 3 Berserkers being re-summoned instantly. First, I’m not sure 3 berserkers being summoned in the first place is realistic. Second, I think the issue was 2 successive 3 clone/phant shatters. That’s not a valid argument.
( Actually I think Robert Gee was referring to duelists being re-summoned using continuum split + signet of the Ether. This could reasonably produce 3 duelists )
Hardest hitting skills? In theory, perhaps. In practice, not true.
Removing phantasm damage would remove the last usefulness from them, clones are easier to produce and use.
The best path would be to add damage and durability and a reasonable attack speed, making Phantasms useful in practical situations.
As an avid D&D player ( from the time of the Red Box Basic Rule set ) I see a lot of possible derivation in this game. Thief stealth and backstab is an example.
you forgot Mesmer = Illusionist/Psionic.
D&D also had balance issues, but many of these could be attributed to too much interference from the publishing company. Too many changes and odd rule twists.
I remember niche builds killing other players or monsters in a single segment. The complexity of the rules created situations where things like that could happen.
Helseth sounds a lot like an early Arnold Schwartzeneger. I’m pretty sure it’s deliberate. He does carry it too far at times though.
I think a game mode that “needs” voice comm and complex multi player interaction doesn’t have much of a place in a public MMO.
It’s a minority, and a small one at that, who are willing and able to put in that amount of time and practice to come to gw2 and have fun.
“Pro League” doesn’t reflect the reality of the majority of the game. I wasn’t displeased by the results of AA’s matches in any case.
So games like LoL and so on shouldn’t exist since at the higher levels require comms?
Pvp is specifically for competitive players and is solely designed as a competitive team game mode…
“Solely designed as a competitive team game mode?” Where did you get that idea? It was only recently that solo queue was removed.
Sure, there are “teams.” Those groupings are mostly random PuGs. That is not conducive to highly organized team play with 3rd party aps.
All games are competitive by definition even if you’re your own opponent. Recently, “competitive” has become a code-word for “ruthlessly stomp and exploit.” I find that a very bad trend.
Higher levels? What “higher levels?” We’ve had multiple seasons of stacked matches. Divisions don’t reflect skill level very much at all. A few teams make money playing under the big top… but if that is “higher levels” then it’s irrelevant because the vast majority will never get there.
Higher levels of unpaid play? I’m not convinced there is anywhere near the population to support play catering to that group.
So my point remains; There’s really no place in this game, ( for the vast majority of players,) for situations that require voice comms and rehearsed player interaction.

If those “lower tier” players were not allowed in “your” queue, you’d have 3 hour queue times.
The same would be true of requiring full teams. Yes, teams on ts are “a” way to play gw2 PvP. They are not by any means the only proper way or even the best way.
Beside that, with 2 seasons of stacked matchmaking, no one can really claim that they “deserve” the higher tier they were carried to on win streaks, in matches that they were pre set with advantage and intended to win.
Elitism won’t work. We really need solo queue back.
Remove dps from phantasms? The don’t do any useful damage now.. which is why Phanatasm builds are non existent.
We just saw Helseth in the worlds. Use of phantasms was minimal at most. They are just another clone and an expensive one at that.
Thieves have a much better phantasm than Mesmers do [Thieves Guild.] I find this rather sad.
People stopped playing the map because it was loads of fun for certain classes and premades. To make a mode like that fun, someone has to be stomped hard and repeatedly.
Pretty soon, people get tired of that.
I once told the Sail Commodore of our local club, " Yeah it’s great that ( another sailor ) wins every race. What good will it be to be the top when no one else comes to race though?" That class is no longer sailed at that club, for lack of interest.
This is the first time I haven’t turned off the tournament and wandered away. Good commentary except for the teeth grinding repetition of “surely” and “boys” or “guys.”
The break time music was a really bad choice.
Helseth sounds a lot like an Early Arnold Schwartzeneger. Amazing performance, Denial Esport.
They tried it. Courtyard really didn’t work.
(edited by Ithilwen.1529)
Yes, but the buffs on Temple are spaced quite a bit further apart,(in time and distance,) so the issue doesn’t happen.
