there is a certain level of Obsession or passion you have to have to be able to be “successfull” in my line of work. That being said. you can apply that to ANY line of work. or any hobby, or well anything.

Who is to say that a mechanic, or an Engineer, or even a retailer is not capable of enjoying what they do and be able to Get just as into it as anyone else.

I am not a computer person. I have many friends that do that for me. I pic up my laptop and bring it to them and say “make it go”, " I will fix dinner while you are at it"

Found something that bothered me yesterday. I had a student, or what I thought was a student, ask me to come help in p4 with Lyssa. I asked if he was stuck in a pug, but he told me he was trying to “get good” and solo it. I thought to myself that why not, I haven’t been playing for a little over a week, why not jump back in and help someone get better. Took a couple tries, but I finally pulled my head out of my rear and finished her off. He then said something to the effect of “if we finish, we might as well sell.”

I don’t know why, but this really rubbed me the wrong way. The guy can’t solo lupi (at least that I’ve seen) and he wants to duo p4 to sell. I gave him some tips on Lupi, but after a while I left.

Was I wrong to do this? I don’t like duoing to sell w/ people I don’t know well, and it made me feel like I was being used for my ability to profit. Some advice from my dungeon friends would be appreciated. I like being a teacher. Carrying someone through a dungeon run just so they can profit (especially someone I don’t know well) doesn’t feel right to me.

I think this is a very interesting argument.

Just so you know where I’m coming from: This is my first MMO, and my first PC game in the first place, outside of the random games of solitaire played on company computers. I literally can’t compare it to any other game I’ve played, outside of the thousands of hours spent on Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc., which have absolutely nothing to do with games such as these.

I think the first thing that you suggest as a solution to the berserker meta, and all that it entails, fundamentally changes what guild wars 2 is as a whole. The idea that content can be completed by any class would be negated by the ideas that you suggest, and required “roles” would exclude more classes and promote more kicking and what you consider elitism. I’m assuming, as I haven’t played anything to compare it directly to, that if content like you suggest would come into play, the lfg would show parties looking for a specific class/role/skill set for an instance, and anyone not fitting that would be kicked, no matter how skilled they were. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard that WoW’s lfg looks like: “Healer wanted” or “Tank wanted” or the like. This seems far more exclusionary than “lvl 80, zerk, melee Lupi”, as any profession can fit that role (Even necros).

As for having gear selection other that dps traits, it’s there just for that. I hate to rehash an old quote, but, “dungeons can be completed in any set of gear with any set of traits”<— said by someone far more experienced than I. Once again, gear selection can make things more efficient, but that’s all. You can have a 3 hour Arah p4 run in cleric’s gear, or any gear like that, or a 1 hour run in berserker’s. It can be completed either way.

The two person vote system does not promote elitism in the slightest. It CAN be used for griefing, or anything like that, but the fact of the matter is that in Arah (I’m saying this just because I’ve been pugging it a bunch lately), the only “promotion of elitism” is kicking someone when they are either: A: Lying (i.e. if they are clearly inexperienced when they join an “experience required” party, or B: Not reading the LFG. It’s been my experience in joining both kinds of parties, those w/o requirements and those with, that if people read, it’s great. If they don’t read, it’s not. There’s not been any sense of elitism that I’ve experienced, even when I stunk. On the contrary, and maybe this is just because I’m an Arah Mentor now, there is encouragement, teaching, learning, and great attitudes all around, even when players are wiped on the floor at Lupicus and I’m finishing him off solo.

As for “DPS checks” in AC; I remember going through the dungeon when I was a noob with mismatched gear and still being able to complete it with a random PuG. The graveling burrows are honestly not a big deal if there’s any kind of party communication and skill in the slightest. I’m sorry, but what you’re saying just isn’t true. The only real “DPS check”, Simin (before the nerf) could be completed w/o berserker’s gear, LoSing, (I would say stacking, but I’m not sure if you would consider standing in melee stacking or not….), or anything that would be considered to promote elitism.

In closing, the only thing that the berserker meta encourages is reading. Reading the lfg and not joining parties that say “Zerk only” or the like. Not conforming to the meta allows people to make their own groups and have fun as they see fit. I’ve joined many a pug for arah p4 (Lfg’s that DO NOT have any set requirements), and have had all sorts of gear, builds, and skill levels. I’ve made some friends in there too, as we all had fun.

TL;DR: Actually, I think I made a good argument. Read the thing.

If you want to practice it would be better to just destroy all of them. You can outrange every turret with Longbow 1 (autoattack will not work, though).

Also, you can quick step to avoid the turrets blind spam and range them down w/ longbow. If you’re not in a hurry, you can lb 3 and not have to worry about them @ range, i.e. stand behind the hump on the left wall and lb 3 aoe until it’s safe.

I think his point was that everyone who has soloed Lupicus can still make mistakes but they feel them a lot harder. Like you did. If you’re like me and you get trashcanned, it’s a normal disappointment, but even pros can screw up and they feel much more disappointed In themselves because “they should have known better.”

Had a TOTAL fail in arah the other day. Soloing Lupi for a pug (on the wall) and got bubbled. I was totally surprised, as I haven’t gotten bubbled in a very long time. I looked @ my positioning and realized that I was in position for off the wall solo. Have been soloing him in the center so often lately that it slipped my mind that I was supposed to stay inside his circle when he’s on the wall. :/

The entire dungeon team was dispersed. There IS no dungeon team. Maybe they’ll put up some invisible walls or fix a waypoint after a couple of years, but don’t expect anything in dungeons.

I’ve been pugging Arah a lot. Nothing’s changed. Pugs still kinda stink most of the time, BUT, since I started mentoring people and teaching pugs, I seem to enjoy it more.

Reflects are fine and exist in other games including MMORPGs.

What is not fine is to halve the hp of a single boss by reflecting his projectiles. If such thing would happen in any other MMO (say wow), the servers would be shut down and this issue would be immediately hotfixed.

The thing is, damage mitigation with reflects is likely not implemented in gw2, leading to this ankward situation where the reflect skills are either godlike or useless.

And let’s face it, I don’t like seeing content designed for 5 being soloed because of godlike reflects or FGS or bad level design.

All due respect, but from your statement, it seems to me that you haven’t pug’d Arah. If I’m wrong I apologize, but I pug for fun (I’m an arah junkie…. SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!) and time and time again I have to solo a boss when everyone’s bit the dust. Arah is plenty challenging for people who haven’t done it a bunch of times.

As for Fractals, there’s a video where Purple Miku solos a lvl 50 fractal. It can be done. Granted, there are some instances that you need a party, i.e. dredge, but soloing fractals IS possible.

I don’t think that every dungeon is “badly designed”, but due to a stagnation of the content that only sees a developer’s hand when hidden “fixes” come into play, the casual player wallows in their mediocrity while the good ones continue to make it look easy.

So, instead of carrying them through the skip, just dance all over their fallen bodies when they wipe @ Lupi. It’s the best when you’ve got some ap-hunting PuG screaming at you to rez though. You can literally do the /dance command on their face if you stay in combat w/ lupi after he’s dead.

To all the Lupi solo students that I’ve had the pleasure of helping and others who continue to strive for it, Brazil has put out an amazing, in-depth guide to soloing Lupi. I highly suggest you take a look at it before you have a session with a mentor and want to solo Lupi.

Ahhh…. Well, if you’re running phalanx strength w/ a 0/6/0/6/2 build on warrior, you’re going to give your party 25 might @ all times. Combine that w/ the 2 main banners and utilities such as fgj and warbanner, you won’t get kicked often in either, as long as you know how to play. W/ Guardian, you need to learn your Aegis timing for group play and run gs/hammer in fractals for perma-protection (I’m not as good @ guardian, so you’ll wanna ask mentors that main guard).

It depends on how you wanna play I guess.

They’re both great in either setting. Although I personally prefer warrior, you should go with whatever class you feel the most comfortable with/won’t screw up :P

I’ve only played AC at the moment, and I’ve done fairly well, but I was wondering if theres anything I could improve.

I play a warrior, Greatsword and Hammer, however longbow if ranged is needed, and I always carry a sword, sheild and axe with me. (I use Sword/Axe for condi when needed)

On my bar its Healing signet, Shake it off, For great justice, Bulls charge and Signet of Rage.

Traits: 4/0/4/2/4

And my armor/weapons are all zerker and I’m working on my rings andtrinkets, but my amulet is, Gwen’s Necklace, I needed the extra toughness, but I’m getting another once I get the laurals to swap out when I don’t.

IMO, the best possible thing that you could be doing is what you’re doing now: Asking for help. Learn from Purple Miku, Colsey/Maha/Hendo/Dub, Leo (No Pulse/noobgood), spoj, and all the other amazing dungeon runners on here. Listen to what they say, they’ve proven what they’re talking about both mathematically and practically. If they say to change something, change it. Open your ears and eyes and try to get better every day. Abandon your ranged weapons outside of very specific circumstances. Melee everything. Become a student of [noob]. Get a mentor. Practice, Practice, Practice. Enjoy the practicing as a process to getting better. If you die/fail, stop and think “Why/how did I fail?” Answer your question yourself after thinking, or ask your party, or the forum regulars. Try not to make the same mistake twice.

You won’t be Dub, Goku, Purple Miku or anyone else like that over night. It takes time and practice. Be humble. Admit your mistakes and don’t accuse others of messing up. If you died, most of the time it’s YOUR fault.

Looked @ the LFG this morning and saw a guildee was in a PuG that was “P1 exp melee Lupi”. Decided, what the heck? It’s always fun running w/ guildees. Enter. The instance owner was in the middle of telling everyone what they should equip as traits. Tried not to let it get to me, but it did (don’t know why). Got to Lupi. This guy was once again telling everyone what they should equip. He’s got a shortbow (thief) and when everyone goes down, yells @ me to drag him over so he can rez. Guy goes down screaming “WHY DIDN’T YOU REZ?” I proceed to solo Lupi, tell him to eff off and leave.

I’ve got a new rule: If you don’t know your shiznit, don’t be an a hole. Period. And even if you DO know your shiznit, don’t be an a hole. Just don’t be an a hole period.

Do my group take 2 min longer on our runs? Probably, but i don’t have to spend the whole time rezzing zerker players or constantly switch to water to keep them alive, so i can totally live with those 2 extra minutes.

Completely short sighted. Skill is what keeps people alive, not gear. I routinely join, and carry, “non berserker” PuGs through Arah p4. 95 times out of 100, I’m the last man standing in my paper thin berserker gear, while the tanky, sentinel or cleric guardians, rifle warriors and bearbow rangers are drinking of their own tears on the gravestones of Orr. Gear choice doesn’t mean anything in PuGs. Make your lfg read whatever you may, kick people who don’t read, but do not judge based on gear.

Ok… Just as long as it doesn’t get widely distributed… It’s not my best work by far. We really should hunt him down and ridicule him insessently. Mr. Whiskers, I hunk this is a job for you!
