D/D thief in GW2

D/D suffers because any changes to D/x and x/D will affect P/D, S/D and D/P. There’s no other way to improve D/D other than tweaking DB, which is the only skill with no connection to other weapon sets.

DB is a horrible skill because it suffers from slight game lag and bad pre-cast and after-cast delays. So even though they improved this skill without addressing its clunkiness, D/D will remain inferior to other weapon sets.

S/D rarely makes use of the dagger, P/D were able, or still can adjust their traits to make a lot of stuff work as condi builds are a bit easier to set up. I expect them both to use DD which will be a huge buff to them both. Still as it is now a buff to X/D wouldn’t really buff S/D nor P/D.
Like I said a lot of times: I like Death Blossom as it is and it is useful to me – sure it’s the only “D/D skill” but I don’t think you can put everything D/D is lacking into it and then everything would be fine.

My suggestion is to redesign the Dual-Wielding feature that when you equip similar weapon on both hands, it doesn’t just change your skill #3 but all 5 skills. This way, changes to D/D will have no connection to D/x and x/D because the whole D/D weapon set is isolated (by extension, same with P/P).

Unless they take this approach, there’s not a lot of room for them to make any changes because they have limited themselves with this kind of weapon set design. So the first step it to open up the weapon set by allowing them to explore other solutions. By changing all 5 skills, the D/D auto-attack will be different from D/x auto attack, which means that D/P can alos be balanced (or nerfed) without affecting D/D.

The problem we’re seeing right now is that D/D needs a buff but D/P and S/D needs a nerf. Nerfing D/P and S/D kills D/D. You can’t buff D/D without making D/P and S/D over powered. So there’s really only one logical solution, separate the skills for each weapon set. The same approach needs to happen with P/P. When Black Powder was nerfed because of D/P…P/P became kitten if it was not already. And this will just continue until they made the change I’ve suggested, there’s really no other way.

With that you’re kind of right (except that no thief weaponset needs a nerf right now – with DD that might be a different secnario, but it’s not in game yet), my point above still stands though. How about a trait “If you wield 2 weapons of the same kind, then you’ll get this buff” if CnD were changed to blind then CiS would be “free”, although then I probably really wouldn’t bother to take that line as it tries to make me into a saint “you rez faster, you heal your allies” wheras I have once been a proud “warrior”.

What would you like to see added the most?

I’d like GW2 to be like it was 1,5 years ago, to be honest.
That means Living Story 1, revert my most crucial trait line back, no lags – that would be awesome. Even being only one server was awesome, I knew all the guys on mine. LA was pretty lonely at times though.
But truth being told: Anet did a really good job improving the periphery of guild wars, like the wallet, the wardrobe, the traits (although improving that took that long that it’s hard for me to appreciate it) and a lot more QoL changes.

You can duel in wvw actually and also in pvp “King of the Hill” is the “server” for duels (at least in EU, don’t know if it’s the same in NA).

Don’t know, I’d somehow rather have them rework the traits than the weaponset but CnD being unblockable would be something – or CnD with blind. But that doesn’t solve the “lag = miss” problem as landing a CnD is/seems to be science – you can simply run through it.
So, how about: CnD = blind and Dancing Dagger = immobilize (instead of cripple)

The question here is, if CnD is bad, why is P/D, which relies on CnD even more than D/D still such a popular build? Heck, even S/D uses CnD from time to time.
The real problem at hand is that D/D is locked into the oneshot playstyle, where you keep on range, then jump in with a simple combo to burst your opponent down.
With P/D, you usually can deal with it, when you fumble a CnD, but D/D is often times all in on the CnD/Backstab plan.
Here’s the thing: even though, P/D uses CnD far more often than D/D, D/D is the only build, that relies on CnD to such an extent because it just lacks alternatives. P/D usually is built as more of a brawler, with a more sturdy frame, while D/D is often times pure glass, so when it needs to hit a CnD, it NEEDS to hit that CnD.
Now, if DB was a different skill, maybe a dash type AoE damaging evade similar to burning speed of elementalist, you’d have another option as D/D player and not be 100% reliant on landing that one skill. But the current death blossom pretty much locks you in place for a couple of evade frames, then locks you into an awkward aftercast animation without any evade frames. The distance you move while using the skill is insignificant at best.

P/D is dead, S/D is dead – the question here wasn’t whether or not X/D is viable.
When I have been a P/D thief for a short while I spent my initative on Shadow strike. (I lost 5% of my fights as a complete noob playing on NA from EU = high ping).
And again: I like death blossom as it is – full stop.
If D/D was reworked it would take a lot more than just a buff to DB. Or; the traits get reworked so that D/D thieves get an indirect buff, or other classes invulnerability gets nerfed which would benefit X/D as well.

As the offhand dagger is fine and the mainhand dagger is fine, I think, the only way to conceivably buff D/D is to rework the dual skill.
Death Blossom has always been a bit lackluster.

No, CnD isn’t fine in times where everybody has got passive invulnerability. Also maybe the initative costs for it are too high as if you miss that was pretty much it. And in case of lags it’s really hard to land CnD – I found that combining steal with CnD has got a 80% higher chance to work, but steal takes a bit to be availlable again.
I like the dual skill btw, has saved me lots of times but I have the questionable advantage that no one expects a D/D thief.

dd is best weapon set for boss fights in pve

dd has it’s place in wvw roaming

it is possible to play dd in pvp but d/p is just more versatile
forgot to switch weapons yesterday, got stuck with dd in ranked… went well actually but lack of blind/interrupts/gap closers really hurts and forced me to play very careful/defensive…. i wanted to afk at some point because enemy team had guard and it was just impossible to get CnD off him due to perma blinds/blocks~

D/D is suicidal when roaming – D/P is always the better choice, P/D has been until the exact condis thief has got access to were nerfed, S/D was until the weaponset was nerfed and then acro.

Yeah and that is another problem, not only with guards but also with mesmers and eles – the passive blocks.

ETA: But again: This is not really about whether or not D/D is viable (at the moment it isn’t) – it’s just so different from everything else.

Good, just: D/D has got no utility, if you press the wrong key you’re toast – no other class or weaponset has that. And maybe that’s why I complain about lags and stuff the most as it affects D/D the most.

D/D is currently the best DPS weapon for PvE. In WvW it used to have a place but then Cloaked in Shadow became Grandmaster and I’ve never seen it used there since.

PvP, it’s been years since it ever showed up seriously.

I use CiS
And yeah, I forgot to include PvE – wanted, but forgot.
But my friend runs dungeons with D/P, because the utility, you know?! So at some point I guess D/D will be forgotten anyway ;)

We have 3 D/D thieves on Gunnars, I think.
I’ve met some P/D + D/D thieves before the patch – they’re gone now as well.

But my question is a bit different as D/D is just so different from everything else in this game that it really feels like an alien.

I went D/P today, well actually I’m levelling my newest thief with D/P and used that set in wvw on one of my 80s. I have been D/P in PVE and partly wvw more than 1,5 years ago and switched to D/D again.

I have all classes at 80, I do play them, but am not good enough for wvw. I did map completion and some dungeons on (4 thieves), ranger, necro, ele – so I spent quite a while with those classes. Still no clue of necro, hate ranger and like ele. All classes but thief (and maybe ranger) feel like faceroll to me; I’m killing all mobs and still have no clue about what I am doing. When fighting my friend in pvp cele ele vs cele ele, I just leave the room and let him win after 20 mins because I’m bored out of my mind.

And that moment I went D/P again, I wondered if D/D thief has a place in this game as you can smash buttons with every other class, every other weaponset (except S/D right now) and still be fine – try that with D/D.

That’s a genuine question, not a whine post:

Does D/D thief even fit in this game?

Or play as one of the lesser races?

I might, however, create a second thief and this one will definitely be an Asura.

I find it difficult to time my skills with her, though.

Still , id find it awesome, if these traits would proc also in each evade xd, would be super awesome to throw the daggers also while using deathly blossom while evadign attacks.

Yeah and imagine facing a S/X thief – now that would be fun ;)

Teq should fail more often

This summed up the entire topic,

If you take 10 mins for the battle, and say 15 mins waiting on the map before spawn, to get what, a bunch of greens, a few rares, that dam spoon, with a tiny tiny chance at something decent, says it all,

Sadly in the same 25 mins, I could have joined a FGS, CS or SW farm and got way more reward/loot.

The sad sorry state is that if they made this event harder no one would do it, the rewards are terrible, and the Triple Trouble event is following suite fast.

2 gold in 15 mins (+ 15 min afk in which I make coffee) plus a good chance of an exo are enough for me. I would make it for less (yeah, I’m cheap).

ETA: And not to forget 15k karma.

Teq should fail more often

Jana.6831

I don’t underestimate what zerg commanders do, not at all! I have heard ‘I hate zerg duty’ before and I can sympathize. My point was if there are 10 people tagged up in the zerg I highly doubt all of them are actually commanding.

You’re right, one commander is usually best but it can look like screenshot.

I have had friends message me that they could not get on the map and their was an obvious failure (not enough people, not all the turrets manned, etc). I have disconnected in the middle of things and wound up on maps like that — not pretty.

So the reason it does fail for some people is most likely because a lot of people wind up on the same teq map as other times (same guilds, etc). If they rarely see it fail the first times they will assume that is normal and not realize they are only seeing their map. In reality they are seeing the most populated map (the one that filled up first) so the one that has the most chance of being more organized/having event vets.

Don’t know whether you’re NA or EU, but one thing I noticed (I was NA – EU – NA – EU) is that Teq on EU is a lot less complicated than on NA – we usually don’t meet an hour beforehand and talk things through, it’s enough if you show up 15 mins before teq starts. After that it can become difficult, maybe because people hop maps in the hope to find a good one. If I want to do teq with friends and they can’t join my map because it’s full, I’ll join theirs – works.
If I’m commanding I’m a zerg commander and I see what the other guys do, not only commanders but those in the zerg who kill the fingers, who rez, who stay when I have to run out of the damage (thief), the guys at the batteries, the ones on the turrets – if only one aspect of it fails all of it fails. I rarely say it though, but I know that all of them pull together.

It really is a scaling issue. It should be easier if there are only a few people there but harder if there are a lot.

It was somehow a pity that we didn’t make it, but like I said, it still was fun, so I don’t complain.

a fix for stacking

It makes sense: Most weapon attacks cleave, so by stacking you dish out more hits than when everybody runs around. That against single and multiple targets. Plus boon sharing – we would do the same in real life.

Tried to teach the new players on my servers how to cap camps today – same story, if they’re running around in a camp full of npcs you waste your energy and time.

Teq should fail more often

Jana.6831

We had a great Teq loss the other day.
I have been the only commander, it was a last minute map, I failed to get another one. A lot of people were joining and leaving, so our map was maybe half full. The guys on the turrets did a great job and we failed the last phase because we didn’t do enough damage.
It was fun actually. And that was something we all agreed on afterwards because we were always hoping that we would still make it and it was a “Yeaaahh!! Naaahh… We could!! Nahhh…”
But then again, I have been around when Teq seemed unbeatable and when no one knew what to do – and I think that’s the key, people aren’t new to Teq fights, that’s why it rarely fails.

ETA: And please don’t underestimate what the zerg commander does – a good zerg commander can save a Teq fight, good turrets can save a Teq fight – 2 of them together and people knowing what to do at the batteries = a breeze.

Lol that drives me nutty.

“We aren’t going to do anything to think creatively and help ourselves, it’s THEIR job to do it for us.”

Then inevitably the rage posts over why it’s taking so long to fix.

“We are getting hit while standing inside these red circles!”

“Why not step away from them?”

“But it’s Anet’s job to STOP THE RED CIRCLES!”

P.S. For the record, I think the new camera angles are lame. I was annoyed when I came back and discovered them, too. But I guess I’m stubborn and didn’t let it beat me, and found other ways to counter.

I never use first person view because I have motion/gaming sickness. So while I could use it when standing still, I still don’t as I just stay away from first person view. I would have to experiment with something I don’t want (and which is making me physically sick) just to counter people who are using this option- I don’t think that makes sense.

And to “just step out of red circles” good idea, but there’s so much AoE everywhere that you can’t avoid it. It has been different back in the day and it would be great if it were like that again, without us being forced to “zoom hack to catch the zoom hackers” and that is the point.

@Jana
I will not requote everything, because I think that will mess this up. Just to be clear, I play every spec and have played everything that was somewhat Meta in the last 2-3 years.
The problem with D/D lies not only in the traits (D/D#3 and #4, the #5 nerf in pve/wvw). But the only trait problem I can see is that CiS is not master anymore. Which is really huge for D/D but it doesn’t make SA useless. Most S/D thieves I know are using SA now instead of Acro outside of pvp.

And no, I don’t rate Acro from a S/D POV, but from every POV. It’s a traitline that nearly nobody uses, regardless of the build. And if you have two traitlines, one is wildly used, and the other is extinct than this has nothing to do with my personal preference when I say that the second one is bad.

No you don’t, otherwise you wouldn’t have complained about “the overall rating of acro” as you would’ve understood – and in the end an overall rating doesn’t matter anyway. I think it’s pretty arrogant to claim that you have understood the class as a whole wheras everybody else hasn’t.
It isn’t our job to do anyway as a lot in this game is currently off (damage, condis etc etc) – all of it correlates, if anet decides to nerf condis they probably don’t have to buff our condi cleanse and so on.
We did a good job trying to be heard but none of us is an expert and it’s up to anet to make our class work.

ETA: And if they don’t then so be it – I can’t care anymore. It’s just a game, let them make it for casuals who all want to run their metabuilds and who all want to complain about stealth and this and that. If that’s what they want I can’t change it. I tried and failed.

Thief feedback

Jana.6831

The one with Acro is one example, we can go through a lot of stuff which is clearly rated random.

We could but I’m still baffled by:

I still take it because it’s the only half reliable condi remove we have and because I want to have CiS which D/P have got on their weapon set.

And yeah, when you say the SA line is so rubbish you would rate everything F-, but you take it regardless is in my opinion strange. For you it’s the worst traitline but you take it?

Are you serious? Just had to read it to understand why I’m still taking the line.
And if you had ever tried D/D which you obviously didn’t, you’d know what the spec needs to be halfway viable. So wheras SA is kitten for D/D, it works/has been slightly buffed for D/P which doesn’t need CiS (because the /P does that job) and which has stealth on demand, so you don’t really need to fight melee – together SA isn’t too bad. Get my point? Acro is used by S/D mainly, so only the usage for S/D gets into the rating, also some experimental D/P builds can use it as well.

I said:

it would get a F- if I rated it

But I didn’t officially rate it (not even in Teef but that’s a long story) because it isn’t only used by D/D and I don’t want D/P to be nerfed.

And again, my opinion: I think the devs showed us that they know what the class needs with the new traitline.

I don’t think so as once again D/D gets nothing. SB gets nothing and well mayybe P/D can make it work.

I understand that you are disappointed, D/D got butchered without any reason and compensating. I don’t understand that either. And yeah, if you rate traits only from a D/D perspective it’s imo not a good rating. It’s like rating traits from a pve perspective where SA and Acro is useless.

You rate Acro and DD from your S/D point of view, so.. work on that?

Edit: Messed the quotes up – fixed it (hopefully)

- In all fairness most professions have >60% lackluster traits. Many professions live from a very small amount of traits and utilities. And Hard to Catch was for sure not the worst, because it had a small place.

Not sure about that, I guess it’s more like “these traits are just too good to not take them, but we could survive with others” wheras when I look at the thief traits it’s “Yeah well, I don’t need this, I don’t want this, but I have to take it to get to next trait which I want”.

- Your group doesn’t have the needed understanding of the thief profession. I would be seriously disappointed if a dev would find the time to discuss this stuff. I bet that many of you have only a very limited experience in thief builds and what traits are doing. I’m sorry to say that, but after I’ve read through the stuff I was seriously shocked that thief players are responsible for this.

Do you mean because acro was rated slightly higher than SA? The SA linie is rubbish in my eyes, from a to z – it would get a F- if I rated it². I still take it because it’s the only half reliable condi remove we have and because I want to have CiS which D/P have got on their weapon set. Hard to catch was a really bad trait, no one’s brain could work that fast – it’s a good trait now. And whatfor are we responsible? Some of us are for the nerf of SA – and yeah, I’m pretty mad because of it. But like I said in another trait: I wish the devs wouldn’t listen to us at all – I wish they just know what the game and the class needs. I do hope that they will rework SA – and for that they don’t need our help.

ETA: ²= so in your eyes I wouldn’t have an understanding of the class as well because I don’t rate the poor acro line lower than SA – but my point of view is D/D, not D/P nor S/D (which doesn’t need SA).

As for wvw, imagine what happens when HoT comes out, with paid players who have specialisations and legendary armor. They defeat f2p players too easily. The servers with most paid accounts will have an unfair advantage. Besides, I forsee that many troll accounts will be made. Creating a lvl 60 is not that hard.

Although I agree that F2P players shouldn’t be allowed to play wvw, that mostly because of the population balance issues which are still ongoing (I might be wrong though) – legendary armor will likely have the same stats as ascended armor, so legendary armor won’t be better than what we already have. Being a good enough player in wvw takes some time anyway, so even with ascended or legendary armor new players would get a beating.
But what will make those who have HoT more powerful than those who haven’t is the elite specialization. I can only speak for thief though, haven’t looked too much into the traits of other professions, but I’d say that those who don’t chose the elite will be at a disadvantage. And that doesn’t only concern F2P accounts.

I’m having these lags for now a year, on and off. My game was running just fine for a few weeks in January until the February (Luck event) patch made me slower than everybody else, so I can only guess what they’re doing and my skills miss more often than they hit. The lag today feels a lot like the lag I’m having for a year now: Porting, evading, hitting/downing out of nowhere.

What if it’s 2 different issues which are still combined? So by fixing some of the “zerg lag” the “roaming lag” got worse. Problem is there’s relatively few roamers and a lot of them might not even notice their “poor performance” is because of lag.
So if you want to look into these issues, maybe have a look at the patches you did August/September last year and February this year.
The first I noticed lags was shortly before megaservers were introduced, btw. But back then I was still on NA (playing from EU) and never had a look at my internet connection.

We’ve had around 30 people of us running around on EB and switching maps, so they might’ve caused my problems, but my enemies didn’t seem to have these problems. Totally agree with you, maybe we can met (if you play EU) on next beta weekend to test things for D/D, spec that I also use.

I am EU but don’t have HoT yet.

The rebirth of S/D is nice. It’s also nice that D/P will profit from a lot of these traits as well.
And what’s with D/D? And by that I mean Dagger/Dagger.
Can’t chime in until my spec is viable again, sorry – I don’t feel that the work on thief is done.

World Population Changes Are Coming

in WvW

Get rid of tiers all together. Make matchups each week completely random so eventually the current tier 1 servers will de-stack out of boredom into lower populated servers. Make transfering free for a month, guaranteed that many guilds/players will make use of it.

If only NA + EU servers weren’t seperate like now, it would also solve the entire coverage problem making coverage actually much easier around all servers and thus more balanced. You’ll always have balance problems, but I don’t quite understand how anet could have even thought about seperating NA and EU servers in the beginning when you know that WvW gamemode needs 24/7 attention. They possibly can’t go back with this and make NA + EU join and compete eachother anymore?

It would also solve the issue of having NA and EU players being able to play together and not having to be on a specific NA or EU server for it.

I want to keep my ping, thank you =)

(Started on NA and went EU – and I like it better here)

Zerker problem

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

In an ideal world, the meta would be a bit more tanky, while zerker would be something you could run if you have a support with you to compensate, at least imo.

This is already reality – jus tthat “speedrun groups” expect others to know when to use their skills = can make zerker work.

Except this isn’t entirely true. If soldier would be meta for melee for example, zerker could still be viable when combined with a heavy support or heal style build. Guilds could make teams outside of meta, learn to play together, and benefit from actually being coördinated. Right now there is no benefit to running anything else. If soldier were the meta, at least coördinated teams could deviate from that.

I’m doing that, even with full zerkers in wvw – I run with my squishy thieves in the melee group or farther away, depending on the situation. Works best if there’s a friendly boon sharing guard around = that’s exactly what you meant. (The why I’m running with zerkers in a zerg is a long story, I’m not the typical FP thief).

Problem is: There’s 3 game modes in GW2 – and the people on this forum only know PvE and feel “neglected” because one doesn’t need soldier’s in PvE.

Other than that I don’t need sitable chairs.
Edit: Works with other races as well, was just too lazy to edit the chat out of the other pics of my chars sitting on chairs.

Just want to point out that, although staff might be fun: I don’t care for anything else than my D/D thief and I want him to be viable again. Although some datamined traits looked nice I’d have to give up another trait line for it and I don’t think that would be worth it, although all trait lines of thief need rework.
So, as long as everything thief has got is that wonky and half cooked it’s hard to tell whether or not the acro nerf and then rebirth in the elite was justified.
I don’t whine though, although I seriously feel like it :P

Edit: And I sure as hell don’t want to be OP – I’d play another class if I wanted that.

WvW Lag March 2015

More improvements coming with our next release. As always, I’d love to hear if anyone notices an improvement.

In case stuff has been fixed with yesterday’s patch – I seem to have less problems solo capping camps – I often had tiny lags while doing so before, gonna test it some more.
When it comes to fights versus other players I still experience time lapses; I can’t see what they’re doing, they seem to jump around and I’m downed “without a reason”.
Experienced that yesterday night when we were ~60 vs 60 and this morning when we were 6 vs 10.
Internet connection is fine says pingplotter.

It’s funny how nobody understands the importance of +1 and insta blink burst..

it’s literally the performance of +1ers/DPS that determines you win or lose and it takes a decent amount of map awareness and rotation skill to do so.
there’s so many thieves in the game, yet very few has the actual map awareness and rotation skill to make it in to at least a decent team.

Truth is all competitive play thieves switched to either ele or mesmer.
No kitting.

Speaking of blocks, people on your block list should not be able to see your online status by friending/blocking you.

I’m pretty certain people who block each other disappear on each other’s lists.
That being said, I like toknow when someone I’ve blocked is online, so I can look up who the people on my map are talking to ;) Not for stalking purposes.

Yeah, might take a while until Gunnars meets Piken though ;) Although that would be awesome.

AC Exploit

get a ele group and necros on that portal and aoe the walls, everything gets cleared, take portal back, be just shure to have a treb with cows or bali to cover that group.
Since AOE circle on ele is larger on some skill, it will cover the wall from the outside to the inside, will melt everything in there, even with some LoS trick u almost can cast towards the back of the wall in front of u and clean the siege(and players wuith a good aoe spike) that is built further on that wall.

<sorry about bad english^^>

But since all towers and castles were build in valleys “clever Anet” build siege on those hills and clear that wall, overall it is to easy to wipe walls, we got plenty of mechanics to make it easy, since it is a very casual game meant to not hold for that long.

If you’ve never killed someone with a sup ac then you haven’t hopped on one while running a condi build. If you want to see something really funny run as a condi ranger and drop a sun spirit before jumping on.

True, I noticed the damage was boosted when I was on my condi thief but that has indeed been a year ago, and back then we weren’t that sure about condi making a difference.

So guys, do you think I could be on the balancing team?

You’d be perfect. In another thread you said “If only you hadn’t read about the changes” – and I red some stuff anet released before they really launched the game “GW2 will become the best balanced MMO. We won’t listen to whiners (something like that)” – and I wish they had sticked to that and not listened to anyone because I don’t even know what I want anymore – CnD being unblockable that would be soooo nice! And my old SA line back, did I already mention it?

But I did it again: A true 1 vs 1 with some Ogres (was better to move out of their range) – took me a while until the mesmer thought that he was invincible and got him down.

The chatbox is that big because reading map chat on my server is better than watching adult movies ;)

I would kill everyone if I tagged up.

I’m a much better scout.

In fact, the one day I did tag up I said “come with me and I’ll try my best not to kill you.”

And I killed everyone ><

I would so love to meet you one day in game, honestly ;)

Whenever I see people from my server running after me I waypoint :D
