@ Jayne

I think you should dive straight in!
On another note: It is up to us to create the community however it is very difficult to create sense of community throughout the whole server. This would be a monumental task to I commend the first server that accomplishes the feat!

Oh it’s easier than you think. It just starts with you. I’m serious.

And if other players speak up if someone’s being boorish or rude, the rude one shuts up pretty darn quick. Peer pressure at its finest, but in this case, only for good. Most of the time folks stay quiet while one or two mouth off in world map and that eventually becomes socially acceptable behaviour, which is sad and can actually kill a game as more and more players are turned off by it and leave. But I’ve witnessed an entire server turn around when a few stood up for the server and said “yeah well, this kind of behaviour isn’t acceptable.” Not said rudely mind you, or in an attack, but just politely in a “this isn’t acceptable, please stop” way.

I’m not talking about kids joking around and being, well .. kids — I’m talking about socially unacceptable behaviour like racist comments, misogyny and their ilk. You’d be surprised how powerful one single voice can be when suddenly it becomes another voice and another. And that’s a good thing.

You can create a sense of community when people are encouraged to be generous and respectful of others, regardless of viewpoints. And that’s key: You may not agree with everything everyone says, but how you approach your dissent of it makes a world of difference in the tone of the community.

You can also create a sense of community by stepping up and being the example. A lot of time on Tarnished Coast server you see people asking if anyone needs a particular piece of loot they just got in map chat. For free, not selling. I watched on launch day as one person offered this up to the general population, and sure enough, soon another and then another were offering up goodies they got that they couldn’t use. It was pretty wonderful to witness. And that was just one person being generous and not asking for money/loot/anything in return. It spread. And that established a wonderful tone and sense of community that continues to exist on the server today.

Want a better community? Be the example. Don’t get upset if you run into a few rude ones … the bulk of the playerbase are decent and kind.

Greetings folks, just thought I’d dip my toe in and say that I’m all for helping others out as I come across them. Like most in this thread, I’m not a hardcore player, more casual.

It’s my belief that while the creators at Anet made this game, it’s up to us to create the community.

And you cannot imagine how very important that job is for us. A welcoming and helpful community can truly make a game great, and encourage like-minded folks to stay and play, rather than bail.

Conversely, trolls and others like them, can completely ruin a game for other players — but thankfully Anet appears to be company that actually does something about them, rather than let its playerbase fight it out and lose interest and leave.

What I would suggest is if you run into a player that doesn’t say “thanks” after you helped them out, send them a private whisper — politely of course lol! — saying “You’re most welcome for the help!” Nine times out of 10 that player will apologize for not saying it sooner and explain they were completely distracted by the game and events.

But don’t stop doing it. Keep helping folks. Keep bailing them out when they appear to be swamped. Keep making this game great BECAUSE of its community. Don’t get discouraged if some folks forget the simple niceties of saying thank you, because the next person will likely be so grateful.

At my former MMO I run a little event called Pay it Forward. What it entails is veteran players helping out new and young adventurers with gear and other items, or something basic like bailing out a player who’s stuck on a questline or dungeon, asking only that those who receive something pay forward the kindness to some other random stranger in return. It started with one server and has grown game-wide (about 9 servers) and runs about two or three times a year. I believe it’s grown not because of me, but because of the remarkable sense of community this MMO has and the playbase is amazing and supportive. We can have the same thing here. Do some random kindness for someone and as they are leaving tell them to pay it forward to someone else. Eventually this movement touches everyone in game in some way, and it’s really quite remarkable Once GW2 matures a bit and we have a settled playerbase, I may try to bring the event here because it really is quite remarkable to witness the response from players — and it certainly creates an amazing wave of goodwill.

I’ve created a few trains in my gameplay but usually it’s when I’m trying to get in and out to earn a POI quickly and I don’t want to fight a whole pile of mobs. If I notice another player on my way out of the POI area getting smacked around, I stop and help them fight .. but honestly most of my trains occur because of that one POI.

I imagine the wiki would have info about it, or you can ask in world map chat where to get specific pieces … I see people doing that all the time on my server and typically folks are helpful about finding them. Everything you see in that locker is obtainable via pve merchants and quests I believe. I also google a ton of stuff too which gets me different sites, but ultimately the info I need.

And what should you call wanting to not be around non RPers

Well hold on a second… I picked TC because it was an RP server (designated by players) because I find the RP community tends to be more mature and friendly/helpful. I, myself, don’t RP but I don’t pick outlandish names and I’m respectful to other players. I’m not alone in my reason for picking TC either.

Drawing lines in the sand and saying you want exclusivity isn’t right either because it pushes out players like me who can add a great deal to the community.

About number 32. I tried the suggestion but just to clarify the XP and loot does not match your current actual level, it’s still scaled down. But yes it is good to hop around at the early levels if you rushed and didn’t do a lot of events and are behind on your story level. There are so many ways to level in this game.

Hrm, I was level 40 something and went to a level 5 zone and still managed to get 40-something gear .. sure I’d get level 5 gear on occassion, but I was regularly getting gear matching my level.

Shecky, I’m not sure what else to offer as a suggestion other than what I wrote in the second para above … maybe someone else can help?

Shecky I’m curious … Are you storing your copper ore in a regular bank slot or in your collectibles tab? Take the ore and put it in your bags and right click “deposit collectible” … It will put it into a crafting storage area in your bank and not take up vault space. … That ore will be accessible at any corresponding crafting table or via your bank in the collection tab when you have bank window open.

I do know, however, for other things like money etc you can use your alt and mouse drag to split up any number of items or combine too (I think — it definately helps you split them, ctrl and drag does something too but can’t remember).

A message to all posters here

in Players Helping Players

It’s been my experience that Anet and the GW2 folks have been incredibly accessible when it comes to changes and working with their playerbase. It was refreshing to see them interacting with folks during the BWEs and online with Twitter and Facebook. I’d never witnessed another gaming company be so open. It made me feel really really good about this company.

But with that level of accessibility and interaction between player and developer there has to be, at the very least, a level of respect shown both ways. Anet folks have done their part being respectful and listening to us, but after reading some of the posts on this forum, I’m not sure we, as players, have returned the favour.

It’s distressing, to me at least, to read people being so aggressive in their demands. I realize this is the nature of the Internet, but the folks at GW2 have done nothing to deserve to be spoken to this way. They’re big boys and girls, they don’t need me to fight their battles, but I wanted to post this because I’m seeing an aggressive and sometimes abusive trend in some of the posts on the forum — a trend that really has no place here.

What I’m asking is that before you hit the “post” button on these forums, is you take five minutes to re-read what you’ve written. Criticism is fair and fine, and nobody should be above it .. but honestly read how you’ve phrased things and ask yourself if you’d be happy if the same was said about you and your work on a very public forum? If you can say “yes this is fair and I’d accept being told this out loud in front of all my coworkers or schoolmates” then go ahead and post. But if you’d be embarrassed or hurt by it being said to you, consider reworking and rewording so that the words aren’t so aggressive and abrasive. You can often say the same thing many different ways — the key is finding balance in your criticism so it doesn’t come off as an attack, as sadly many posts I’ve been reading have.

This company has been open and accessible because it truly wants to work with its playerbase. But if you’re getting bashed over and over with harsh and abrasive words, how willing would you be to continue that relationship? I’d hate to see that change.

At the very low levels, I wound up grinding a tiny bit to get all my weapon/spells up to date, so I could flip between any of them and have them all readily accessible.

I killed a bunch of feathered Moas (poor birdies!), with dagger, scepter, staff, etc … until I knew all my spells for the various weapons.

If you open up your hero tab and go to skills you’ll see all your spells and which weapons proc which spells …

This, of course, was my personal choice, lol there’s a bit of OCD in me that didn’t want to progress fighting without having all my spellsets unlocked. And by the time I was done getting them all, I had gained some levels and managed to be equal to the content in the area …

Wondering if I'm leveling wrong?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Jayne.9251

Jayne.9251

I don’t believe there’s any one way to level .. it’s typically up to the player’s personal choice. I, like you, did the various starter areas in my 20s and it took me into my late 30s … and I have no regrets about doing this. It just means I have a ton of new content I’ve yet to discover, and because of the delevelling you don’t have to be X-level to do X-map. The level suggestions on the map are the minimum requirement for the area so you don’t get smooshed. The rest, as they say, is up to you.

Don’t stress it .. enjoy the game the way YOU want to play it and the rest will fall into place on its own.

Inscriptions are like a certain imbuing tool you use when making gear. If you mouseover the inscription it tells you what kind of gear (stats) you’ll get when you combine it with say a tunic panel and a tunic lining.

Typically inscriptions are the third component necessary to make the gear … and determine the end-product.

Are you on wifi .. you mention your computer is close to the router … but you don’t mention whether you’re hard wired or not.

If you are on wifi, is it internal wifi or a usb plug?

If it’s the latter, I can recommend at fabulous USB adapter that gets you 5 bars signal no matter where you are:

http://www.amazon.ca/Amped-Wireless-UA600-Wireless-300N-Adapter/dp/B004MDWCCA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347913445&sr=8-1

It’s pricier than the typical $10-$20 usb plugs, but it’s worth it. Because, as others have kind of suggested, it sounds like you either need a reboot or your USB wifi plug is dying.

Also, be sure to change your wifi password frequently — in case your neighbours are “borrowing” your signal. You can also eliminate your wifi name from even showing up in wifi searches by going to your router’s main page and unchecking your SSD broadcast .. be sure to change your name of your wifi signal tho (and write it down so you can type it in later yourself!), or folks who have your wifi signal bookmarked can simply just type it in, also make sure you’re at least WEP-2 password encrypted … doing these things will help eliminate anyone piggybacking on your internet.

Depending on your level (actually it doesn’t matter what level really when you think about it) .. you have many options to help you boost those 3 to 5 levels.

What I did in my mid-20s was go do Asura starter area and Sylvari starter area after completing the human area near Divinity’s Reach. By the time I was finished those two maps I was in my mid-30s, and had a ton of resources to use for crafting.

You can also stick around for Dynamic events — they usually show on your map with a big orange circle .. press M and head to one to help complete an event, which often leads to another harder event shortly after the first event, and gives you nice karma points. Watch for these events on your map and go help other players take down the mob.

There is exactly seven seconds between wind blasts .. once the flag goes back down, run accross the first bridge/wall and then hide behind the wall there. The walls are your friends (as Sieren hints at in her dialogue).

I waited for the flags to drop and then counted as I ran, knowing I had to be somewhere safe behind a wall at about 6 seconds in. Then you just wait for the flags to pop up and go back down again, and you have another 7 seconds to make that second leg.

The level 50 yellow gear satchel recipe I got from the forge requires something silly like 105 scales … Lol, I don’t have that kind of coin.

In the human starter area .. BEFORE you fight the mob of centaurs on the bridge and past that takes you to the main region .. there are tons of villagers huddling in peril over the invading centaurs. If you go up and talk to each of them and tell them to run to the inn, you’ll get 2 karma points per villager. This is bottomless, and can give you a nice boost toward getting karma gear/recipes/whatever later — so tell as many as you can to run to the inn and get your karma points.

I have looked around the other starter areas for Sylvari, Asura and Norn (haven’t tried Charr), but sadly could not find the equivalent in their starter areas.

NOTE: They have apparently removed this from game. Too bad, was a neat little “hidden” find.

So you’re looking for a timezone that mysteriously hides eggs and has tons of chocolate?

I’m kidding. Not helpful, I know

I’m on Tarnished Coast, but I purposefully picked it because RP communities tend to be more friendly and mature, but you’re likely right, pvp is probably not high on their list of priorities (although last I heard, they were doing well in WvW). I don’t personally RP myself, but have found the server chatty and nice. And those who have approached me about RPing are quite nice and respectful when I decline and say I don’t RP … and then explain why I picked TC
