Yeah….being uplevel doesn’t uplvl your gear. Still gonna be handicapped. Isn’t really a solo friendly area unless you know how to deal with it. And that takes dying for a while.

Quite the opposite. It does up-level your gear. It levels your gear up in relation to how good it is for your level. In other words, you need to ensure that you have the best possible gear you can in order to remain comparable.

The main disadvantage is the gear will likely only favour 1 stat instead of 3-6. If you pop on power runes (10 power among different runes) to each armor and get the power/precision armour, you should be OK up levelled.

It’s kind of funny though, the way that works, when you gain a level in Southsun you actually become less powerful, because the equipment you are wearing is weaker compared to your level.

Popping on runes does not necessarily help you in regards to upleveling. If your rune gives +10 power, it will give +10 power after uplevel gets applied. This is why when higher levels get downleveled, they still do large amounts of damage (and because of traits).

It still helps. All I know is when I went there on my ranger with these runes applied, I had ~2800 attack, definitely not as good as my ~3400 attack now, but definitely makes the content do-able.

I haven’t specifically tested the runes to see if they are upscaled with the rest of the armor, but even if they aren’t that extra 60 power is better than not having it.

Just an update on this. I purchased a liquid cooler for my CPU which has brought temperatures down for sure. The problem is still there though. Yesterday it popped up and I checked my temps. GPU was 55 C, internal cores were between 50 and 55 and the CPU was 40 C.

The issue is quite similar to this one – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Graphic-Glitch/first#post1770344

The solution there was to install service pack 1, but I am on Windows 8, so that won’t work.

Any other ideas?

I wonder, does WoW allow players who have a top-tier character to automatically be able to use all their alts in top tier PvE/PvP content without having to go through the process? Does SWtoR? EQ? Rift? Cryptic’s games? Any other theme park MMO?

Vayne is correct, this is the nature of the MMO beast.

First, I don’t think anyone complained about getting an alt to 80, that’s easy.

Second, why is it that nature of the MMO beast? And is that the best nature the beast could have?

Could someone help me understand how it would harm the game to have ascended gear be account bound instead of soulbound? I don’t think it would harm Vayne’s casual play style. Nor would it cause harm to the gear grinders with a single toon. But it would greatly help those who have already leveled multiple alts to 80 and are just waiting around for BiS gear.

I do agree that I would like ascended gear to be account bound, but I do not think it’s current design discourages alts. That was the question of the main topic.

But the OP does, otherwise he would not have included ascended gear in the list. The only reason I can see that ascended gear could be considered to discourage alts is because of the time gating. If you can think of another reason please let me know. I enjoy thinking through these things.

Yup the OP does, but I think that is of his own fault and not ANets. I think that Time-Gating is fine, and adds to the longevity and replayability of the game. I’d like the rings to be account bound, not because I want it for less time-gating, but because I often equip an ascended ring right away for the agony resistance, and then later on when I have the laurels/commendations etc I will buy the ring that fits my build better. I’m then left with a soulbound ring in my inventory that is useless. However, I can make it account bound again by infusing it in the mystic forge, which is my current plan.

I do feel bad that the OP feels discouraged, but again, I do not think that is inherent in the design. I could say that I feel discouraged to play Charr because a cat once scared me. That’s really my own fault that I feel discouraged, and I feel it’s similar to the OP. It’s their own choice to not play it as is.

I’m surprised no one understand why OP is complaining. He want to play a different class, for example a thief instead of warrior and do fractal 48.

But he felt discouraged since it take so much effort to get the gear and agony to do 48, not to mention even if he get it, he wont’ have a chance to loot fractal skin. Unless he start leveling from 1-48 again.

This type of thing come up from antoher game I played too. But there’s also the counter argument if achievement is account bound, people won’t be “encouraged” to play their alt. As in some people probably want to level another character from fotm1 to fotm48 but it become pointless if personal level is account bound.

I understand that, and I disagree with the conclusion. As someone who is on level 25 fractals, I currently have enough accessories/trinkets to equip 3 of my characters in ascended gear. Not quite fully, but the minimum is 3 and max is 5 ascended items. At level 48, one should easily have enough to equip an alt with ascended gear and apply the simple agony resistance infusion. Then the alternate will easily be able to do higher level fractals with the agony resistance.

As for not getting the same loot, if all you do is fractals, and you are pre-equipped with agony resistance, it won’t take long to level up. Either way, they still have the primary character for the loot and the 2ndary character can still play higher level fractals.

I feel quite the opposite. I feel encouraged to level alts in this game and now have 5 80’s.

Sounds like you don’t want alts, you just want one main that can re-specialize into each class while keeping max tier everything.

True it is prominent in the story in that sense, but it isn’t made obvious to the player. If a player had not played Guild Wars 1 it is unlikely they would know any of this. Also, even some GW1 players may have not realized the true meaning of Guild Wars. I think it would be better if at least 1 story mission gave a good detailed ‘history lesson’ about what the guild wars are and why they are important.

When you have human separatists and char renegades still battling each other, is it really that hard to see the aftermath of a far bigger war?
Now as GW1 goes – Cantha and Illona stories have nothing to do with Guild Wars, Eye of the North has more to do with what’s going with all of the races prior to GW2.
Guild Wars is more about what happened after the big war, than the war itself.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant a history lesson on the human vs human vs human guild wars, not the charr vs human war that followed it. Though, I guess both would be nice. Knowing that Charr and Humans hate each other doesn’t mean you can infer that there were human only guild wars a long time ago.

I also played all 4 of the original guild wars. I really enjoyed their stories, but with so many people asking what Guild Wars are, I thought it’d be nice to have something more in-game-story answer these.

I don’t see why people have to have stuff handed to them. If you’re interested in the lore, it’s worth exploring to learn it. If not, you’re not missing out on anything.

Too often today, everything has to be laid out in the simplest form. We need giant green arrows in personal stories because we can’t figure out where to go. We need stars on maps and websites that give us walk throughs, so that content that should take a couple of days takes 45 minutes.

The lore is in the game if people want to find it. But there’s a whole lot of lore…and if you put it all out there, it would simply be overwhelming.

I mean, I don’t walk into a place in real life and know everything there is to know about it on day one. And while this isn’t real life, if everything was given to me up front, the joy of discovering it would be completely lost.

I already think too much of the game is spoon fed. At least with the lore, you have to look around a bit.

In my opinion, the reason we need all those extra things (walk throughs etc) is because the story is not clearly laid out for us. I loved the story telling in Zelda Ocarina of Time, for example, and it was very linear. The story was all given to me and I loved how it was told. However, in Skyrim, for example, the story is all in the side quests and with reading text from talking to NPC’s everywhere and piecing it together. I personally do not like that form of story telling. I find it hard to follow and doesn’t keep my interest long enough for me to put everything together.

I am a huge fan of stories and like to follow them, but I definitely prefer the Zelda form of story-telling. I find that Guild Wars falls in between the two. I appreciate that there is more lore hidden in the world, but I think that certain major pieces of story should be included in story missions. I suppose thakitten is Human history could have its problems, but meh. As a Human, I helped out Trehearne with his Wyld Hunt which is a Sylvari thing.

Comparing the game to real life isn’t really adequate. In real life, I could walk up to my mentor and ask them questions like ‘what were the guild wars?’ and they’d tell me. You cannot do that in a game.

One final thing. I do not think that everything should be given to you upfront “on day one”, that is poor story telling. However, I do think that everything pertinent to the story should be given to you during the story. Certain important parts can be left til later to create a sense of mystery. Pieces can be left around the world to foreshadow these story pieces, but the actual bulk of it is given to you later on.

The Guild Wars and their effects are still prominent in the lore.

If you look close enough, you can see the many/most of the problems that humans faced in the past stems from the Guild Wars. The Guild Wars seem to be a catalyst for a lot of other major events.
1. The wars left all three major kingdoms (Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr) vulnerable to outside forces, and that’s why the charr were able to invade or almost invade all of three kingdoms.
2. Ascalon was overrun and essentially destroyed by the charr, eventually completely crumbling and falling into the hands of the charr. That’s where we get the Black Citadel today.
3. Kryta turned to the White Mantle and the Mursaat to fight the charr and drove them off. But the White Mantle themselves presented problems and were eventually overthrown in favor of the monarchy again.
4. Orr was completely and utterly decimated by Khilbron, who decided to read a scroll of magic (urged by the fallen human god Abaddon). This magic caused the entire nation to fall into the ocean and pretty much killed everyone. Orr houses Arah, and as such a very powerful magical area. Zhaitan the elder dragon arose here and many of his minions are Orrian in nature.

Without the Guild Wars, it is unlikely that these events would have happened the same way. Ascalon may not have fallen and Orr likely would not have been decimated (but who knows how Abaddon’s influence on Khilbron would’ve turned out). So you may not see the Guild Wars themselves but their effects are far and wide.

Leveling in Southsun, a good or bad idea?

I’d recommend it personally. Dynamic events are great exp and they are constantly running and are easy to complete. It may not be the fastest exp, but it is fast, and it’s rewarding in loot as well.

I leveled from 62 to 80 on Sunday at Southsun and also got ~25 gold while doing it.

Some people get bored after an hour or two of the same 4-5 events.

Anyway, can confirm that exp is pretty fast there atm and not to be beaten. If you get your timing right you’ll level quite fast. (I’m level 80 but been getting alot of Skillspoints) Just be prepared to die pretty fast and often.

And silly me was wondering why I’ve been having to ress so many upscaled there lately. Might actually try it out myself.

Haha for sure, it can get repetitive. For me, I find it is more boring levelling in other zones, because I spend 75% of my time looking for things to do and 25% of my time doing them. (Might be an exaggeration, but feels that way). As oppose to constantly doing events over and over, that is more active and fun for me.

I also found that Southsun is more fun because there are plenty of people around, as oppose to many lower level areas where you may run into 1-5 people in a given zone.

I agree. It’s impossible to complete any personal story these days when Orr is completely overrun by the undead with not a single person in sight.

Are you talking about Arah story mode, or the personal story steps prior to that? The personal story steps prior can easily be completed solo. Though I agree that Orr is frustrating and doing some skill points requires guesting, lots of friends or stealth, I cannot agree that Personal Story is even remotely affected.

I played through it slowly, because I was primarily trying to do events etc. I am sure you can complete this in one sitting easy.

The Guild Wars name is in reference to the 3 guild wars that took place prior to the first game. Since this is a sequel to that game it still keeps the name. If you do some research on the wiki about Guild Wars 1 and its lore you can read about the 3 different guild wars that took place with the third one coming to an end when the first games storys was starting.

I will read about GW1, thank you for the advice. Although I think those three guild events that took place a long time ago SHOULD be the key element on any Chapter of the GW universe, including GW2.

I disagee. While Guild vs Guild was very big early on in Guild Wars 1, as time went on the focus of the game shifted from PvP to PvE. Clearly the most loyal and dedicated players by percentage were PvE players.

This is why you see so few MMOs centered around PvP (and so few successful ones). PvP is almost always an add on to a PVe experience.

In fact, Guild Wars 2 is probably one of the few MMOs that take PvP seriously, even if the resources still mostly went to PvE.

Maybe I misunderstood Jubei, but I thought Jubei was saying that the lore of the guild wars prior to Guild Wars 1 should be prevalent in the Guild Wars 2 story arc.

Just for clarity, this quote isn’t from NCSoft PR, marketing, or ArenaNet.

It was written by the person who wrote the article, who was expressing their own opinion about the state of the game. We’re excited and humbled they feel that way, but that’s up for each of you (and the press) to decide on your own.

We’ve only once as a company made any reference to a statement about “expansions worth of content”, December of last year, in one interview and we both very quickly clarified what we meant by such, and also asked our marketing team to remove this from our future messaging since it means wildly different things to different people making it impossible to be true for everyone. (For example I expected the sandwichmancer profession in an expansion and didn’t get one in jan/feb/march, that’s BS ArenaNet!)

As a reminder, the stuff we are trying to work on can be summarized high-level here, and we’ll update this again later this year with our progress:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/colin-johanson-on-guild-wars-2-in-the-months-ahead/

Hey Colin,

Thanks for the clarification, and my apologies for misunderstanding! I did not realize that it wasn’t NCSOFT or ArenaNet who had said it more recently. I also originally missed the post where you retracting /clarified the statement a few months back.

Keep up the good work, loving Living Story

"More Than An Expansion's Worth of Content"

Jemmi.6058

If one were to look at my posting history it would become very apparent I am not exactly the biggest cheerleader for GW2/ANet. That said, this is simply a case of PR people being PR people (and, frankly, doing what they are paid to do). I wouldn’t get overly worked up for it, nor would I consider it a particularly import point of contention.

Interestingly, I feel the exact opposite. I love ANet and this game and am a huge supporter of the product. I love all the added content they are delivering.

I am, however, against deceitful advertising. There are a couple of reasons why I believe this is a point worth talking about:

1. Anyone who is thinking about buying the game and has decided to research up on it will come to the forum and notice this. They will then realize that the expansion worth of content quoted in the advertisement is untrue.

2. ANet and NCSOFT will see we are unhappy with this and will, hopefully, rectify their marketing techniques going forward.

They could simply adjust their terminology and get the same point across. for example:

Since the launch of Guild Wars 2, NCSOFT and ArenaNet have released a lot of fun and exciting new content, regularly hosted special events like Halloween, Lost Shores and Wintersday, introduced players to the retro-goodness of the Super Adventure Box, and engaged players with the Living World philosophy, all the while continually updating and tweaking the game experience. There are record numbers of people playing Guild Wars 2 and the recent WvW and PvP updates are just the first drops in a shower of new updates.

Or something to that effect..

I bolded record numbers because that is misleading. Perhaps exclude it or be more specific. What sort of record are they breaking? Are there more people online than any other MM out there? (doubt it). Are there more people online now than September? Are there more people online than any other F2P game? Are there more people online in this game than any other game at an equivalent amount of time after release? Are there more people online than Guild Wars 1 at the same point in it’s life? etc etc..

This is how I define a Guild Wars expansion:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Eye_of_the_North

Some of the features included:

  • 41 new armor sets
  • 18 dungeons
  • 124 new quests
  • 4 new regions (each with a number of explorable areas)

And guess what? It wasn’t temporary content. Can anything added to GW2 since launch come close to matching all that?

That was a paid expansion two years after the game launched. Why not compare apples to apples. The updates prophecies got was Sorrows Furnace and hard mode, which was the same missions but harder.

In comparison Guild Wars 2 got a new PvP map, Fractals, Guild Missions and a ton of temporary content in the same space of time.

Guild Wars 2 has done far better with updates than Guild Wars 1, at least thus far. Anyone who denies it isn’t paying attention.

You are comparing apples to apples in terms of what was updated, but not what was advertised, which is the topic of discussion.

The update in prophecies was not an expansion. Eye of the North is the only thing the Guild Wars universe has had that has been advertised as an expansion. Therefore comparing it to the ‘expansion worth of content’ is an apples to apples comparison.

I understand the limitations of why they cannot add that, but if they are too limited to put out updates of an expansion worth of content by their own historical definition, then they shouldn’t say as much.

It would be like me saying, I’m going to give you $1000 tomorrow. Then tomorrow, I give you $10. Then I say it’s OK, because I have only been at my job for a week and cannot afford to give you $1000. Fair enough, but I still lied.

We first need to leave the beta phase of the game, then enjoy a finished game (if you enjoy the beta, imagine the game with all events and activities working at 100%) and then, we can finally think on a expansion

cant agree with this more. there are still is a lot of issues that still need to be fixed, and if you are focused on the pvp side of the game you know all too well which is causing a lot of people to leave.

Can’t disagree with this more. This game hardly feels like beta, and I rarely if ever run in to bugs. I am focused entirely on PvE though. +1 for expansion and more story.

That aside, I do not think that using mesmer portal is cheating. IMO it is as much of a ‘cheat’ as it is to get an end of dungeon reward if you died on the boss and your team finished it. It is less of a cheat than using dragon timers.

The skill is there and working as intended. If you want to consider that a cheat, consider any of the many other skills a cheat. i.e. anything that makes you invulnerable, that should be a cheat too?

This whole thing against portals is extremely silly imho.

If your gpu is running at 70’s you might want to invest in a better cooler for it. On max settings mine never gets over 62-65 but I usually run it on medium because I don’t really want to work my card so hard and it never gets over 55. Just because 70’s isn’t a critical temp doesn’t mean your card is gonna be happy with it. Start with lowering the gpu temp first and see if it fixes it. The fact you said it only occurs when they heat up points to a heat issue. If it was another hardware or software issue it would most likely do it all the time.

Possibly, I turn up the fan and it cools down to 50 no problem. For some reason Asus or ATI figured that it only needs to run at 30% RPM at 70C

Hello,
I am not sure if this is due to my PC or to Guild Wars 2, but am hoping someone can help me.

I recently purchased and built a new PC.
Specs
i7 3770k processor
16 GB RAM
intel 520 series SSD
Asus ATI Radeon HD 7870
ASUS P8Z77-V Lk motherboard

I am receiving an issue in Guild Wars 2 only where bright lines will start flashing all over the place once the CPU and GPU start heating up. The heat, however, is no where near dangerous. It happens when the CPU is ~50 C, GPU is ~70 C and the internal cores are ~60-70C. Naturally it happens more the hotter it gets. The only solution I have found is to use Speedfan to set fans to max.

I have not received this in any other game (such as Tomb Raider, Tera and Bioshock Infinite).

I also have my drivers up to date, (using the beta actually I forget the version of the catalyst, 13.5b I think).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this, or what may be causing it to happen specifically in GW2?

Ranger was the easiest to level for me (having levelled a ranger to 60, and Thief/Ele/Mesmer/Warrior to 80). I recommend using a shortbow for levelling and to get a longbow later on. Also place yourself to the side/behind enemy to stack bleeding with your shortbow.

I also recommend travelling to Queensdale/Kessex, IMO the quests are a lot more fun and you level quite quickly.

EDIT: This also has nothing to do with personal story, you should have it moved to Players helping Players or possibly the Ranger forum

Hmm I definitely got the vibe that she was up to something. I mean she is just some random DR citizen having a secret meeting on Southsun?

The thing is that most of people answering on this thread are considering players have full gear. Again, as a casual, I’m far from being fully built.

Another problem is that Guild Wars 2 is proclaming itself a worldwide game. However, with server only in EU and NA, and me living in Australia, my ping is relatively high. It doesn’t make the game unplayable BUT avoiding critical nukes is sometimes totally impossible… and mobs are not all telegraphing their next attack.

This is another reason the an event designed to be accessible to the masses shouldn’t be that annoying and taking into account players who have 200+ constant ping.

Outside from that, I enjoyed the game a lot so far, even as a solo player! The difference in difficulty and frustration on the southsun cove living story is just to an other level.

First part, this game makes it very easy to obtain max stats gear. It was part of their design philosophy, and they have designed the content to be challenging for people with this gear. My recommendation is that you sell all mats that you gain through levelling/playing and then use that gold to buy your gear. Won’t take you very long. For example, my Ranger has 20 gold at level 60 using this strategy, and every 10 levels I buy the best possible gear I can. At level 80 I will have well above 20 gold and can use that to buy full exotic gear and then some.

That is rather unfortunate about your ping though are you sure it is Anet server side and not ISP side? What sort of internet speeds you subscribe to?

Of course they are, is it right? No. But a lot of gaming companies will do it.

Sure it is right. That is how marketing works. You sell it in a way to breed desire. This works on both poor people and non-poor people alike.

IMO the issue is not with ANet. It is with one of or a combination of any of the following:

1. your upbringing. If you have no self control over this sort of thing, your parents did not do a great job of teaching you to budget.

2. Credit cards. We live in a society full of debt and everyone is getting more and more in debt. Why pay now when you can pay later? Oh but I can buy it now and earn the money later! etc

3. Lack of education – which may relate to poorer education to poorer people – resulting in the inability to critically think about the outcome.

These are very important factors i agree, but both 1 and 3 are a cycle from generation to generation, it’s hard to break out of that and marketing tactics like these don’t help.

I agree and disagree about the “marketing tactics like this don’t help”. Short term, yes they don’t help, because they prey on the weak so-to speak. However, long term it does the opposite. The more corporations using marketing tactics like this, the more money they get, the larger they get and the more people they employ. The economy grows, GDP grows and GDP/capita grows. Therefore, long term results are fewer unemployed people and a higher standard of living.

Obviously this, as it relates to Arena Net and gaming, is less significant than other sectors. However, I think that is true to the amount of money they are ‘swindling’ out of the weak too.

9. Super Adventure Box provided infantile mode which allowed those who do not enjoy jumping puzzles but still wanted to see the content the opportunity to do so.

Haha yes this was good, however I think infantile mode sounds a bit condescending.

Silly bookah, the Super Adventure Box was designed by an asura to empower students to reach their potential while building character through interactive play experience. Calling the first level Infantile Mode fits the arrogant superiority of the asura race.

OP, I agree with your post – brilliant design decisions.

:P Definitely, and I totally get that. I did not find it offensive, but I remember reading some posts by people that did.

I applaud you for being so positive on these negative filled forums. I really hate to do this, but I wanted to point out some negatives that come with these great features. (I do really love this game though, don’t get me wrong! I just think it is beneficial to identify weaknesses, so that they can be addressed and improved).

1. Players are rewarded for helping each other, rather than conditioned to compete with each other, such as xp awarded for ressurecting other players.

This is definitely great, and I love that it encourages group play! This sometimes makes the game way to easy though, as many events do not scale well. i.e. look at any meta boss, they are all so very easy and we all get credit for them.

2. Players do not compete for resources, and all players are allowed access to gathering nodes.

This is great in theory, but in practice it results in all materials being very cheap to purchase on the TP. There is a huge saturation of supply which is greater than demand on many materials.

3. Players can learn all trade professions on one character, and do not lose the knowledge of recipes when switching.

This is also great in theory, but in practice has resulted in making crafting useless. It is often cheaper to purchase a crafted item on the TP than it is to craft it yourself. That is because once the materials are used to craft they degrade in value. Therefore, it is better for you to sell mats that you collect and then purchase the crafted armor from the TP. The only 2 reasons for crafting are a) experience/levelling and b) legendaries.

4. Players can progress and earn the top-tier gear by playing how they truly want to. One may earn ascended gear from doing dungeons, doing pvp, or even doing pve on your own through dailies.

This I mostly agree with. The only concern is how easy it is to get max stat gear. Many find this great, I personally find it dissatisfying.

5. Items sold in the gem-store do not offer advantages when facing other players, and gem store currency can be bought with in-game gold.

Yes, I do love this! However, it has resulted in RNG chests for skins as the best source of income for ANet. Because you can purchase gems with gold, any desirable skin that is guaranteed would simply be purchased this way. The only way to ensure people use real money is for the gem count required to be very high.

6. Content is constantly added to the game despite there being no subscription fee.

Can’t disagree with this one

7. End-game gear progression is mainly for cosmetic looks, with ascended gear only adding minimal stats above exotic gear, and legendaries having the same stats as exotic gear. This puts an end to constantly ‘needing’ to get new gear, and allows you to do what content you find fun.

It’s mainly for cosmetic looks, but the cosmetic options are very few. Personally, I do not like most of the armors in this game. I liked GW1 armors way more. It’s also extremely easy to get the skins you want, so the progression for appearance is short lived.

8. The latest living story achievements in SouthSun Cove do not require players to do the jumping puzzle to complete, yet still offer a reward for those who do.

Again, can’t disagree with this one

9. Super Adventure Box provided infantile mode which allowed those who do not enjoy jumping puzzles but still wanted to see the content the opportunity to do so.

Haha yes this was good, however I think infantile mode sounds a bit condescending.

I’d like it if you can ‘extract’ a dye from your dye panel and it’s placed as an account-bound identified dye in your inventory. Then you could transfer between characters.

I’d really like this, because I got an Abyss dye on my original character, but I never play that one any more.

I agree and disagree. I found most of the damage wasn’t too bad when I was there playing with my level 60 ranger upscaled.

However, I did find that at one point the damage was out of whack. A small karka just ran through me and I was instantly killed, not sure what it did?

My biggest problem are the conditions that cannot be removed with condition removal. These are just silly and frustrating.

I agree. It wasn’t until my guild explained it to me that I even really realized what they were. I had read a bit about combo’s prior to release, but only knew about burning arrows.

PS: my guild explained it to me quite awhile after I had got my 2nd character to 80.

I can guarantee you that Anet makes more money with gambling boxes then direct purchase skins. How do I come by this knowledge you ask? Simple…

Anet tried doing direct purchase skins for wintersday. People no longer wanted them because they weren’t “rare” since anyone could buy them. Therefore very few people bought them. Anet did not make a lot of money. Anet puts a 0.1% chance of getting an item in a box. The item is “rare” now and most people won’t get it so everyone and their mother spent $30+ on these boxes for a chance at the “rare” item.

Whatever your personal opinion on the matter is, it doesn’t matter because Anet gave the players a choice and the vast majority chose RNG boxes.

You cannot really come to a firm conclusion based on a sample size of 1. As a post above says, the skins were not great. There are many factors that can affect it. It would be very difficult to say with 100% certainty one way or the other.

Your post is very bias and based on opinion. Do you actually have numbers to support the amount of money made off Wintersday skins vs RNG skins from another event? Have you randomly polled the community to determine what the vast majority prefer? It also seems to be contradictory. You said that no one purchased the skins because they were not rare, but then that would make them rare – wouldn’t it? My counter argument is that everyone wants Super skins, but those skins were definitely not rare.
