Casual is not 1-2 hours a day

Personally, I do not care much for Casual vs Hardcore arguments. For some reason, I find them both kind of insulting. If someone said I was casual, I’d assume they mean I barely play and am not very good, and if someone said I am hardcore, I’d assume that I am too addicted and should stop playing as it is consuming my life.

I think most people fall in the middle-class ground and are neither casual nor hardcore.

I also don’t think it really matters what you call it. Play the way you want and do what you want and don’t worry about its label.

Look up the word deter. DR does nothing whatsover to deter bots. It doesn’t even inconvenience them—they’re bots—they just run. DR simply reduces the loot for bots and players equally.

What I’m saying about WoW is that, with all it’s many different features in place, I get a lot more loot from farming in WoW than I do in GW2, all the while without encountering DR. I would ask how this is possible to do without the economy collapsing again, but I think I’ve made the point clearly.

Your point is not clear. You have asked why you can get a lot of loot in WoW and not a lot in GW2 and how in WoW you are not destroying the economy but in GW2 you would. My answer is you wouldn’t personally, but the economy would be ruined. This would be because everyone would get insane amounts of materials and the market would be flooded with it. Everything would approach having 0 price in the TP and would therefore get rid of the entire purpose of the TP.

The reason this does not happen in WoW is because resources are limited. No 2 people can access the same resource. No mass of people can loot the same enemy mob. In GW2, not only can every person access every node, but you can access it on all of your characters. In GW2 every person gets loot that tags a mob. In GW2 Dynamic Events occur constantly that spawn hundreds of loot dropping enemies. Therefore the amount of resource potential is almost limitless. In order to put a limit on it, ANet introduced DR.

Bots are there, put in place by actual people. These people have motives. These motives can be deterred. These motives are deterred through DR. I understand what deter means.

Except, DR does nothing whatsoever to deter bots. It simply reduces the amount of goods received by bots and players equally. Imagine a police force that punished law abiding citizens and criminals equally. Now there is a good analogy for police and DR.

In WoW I wasn’t farming competitive nodes in my example and there was little competition for mobs in terms of tagging. They were simply there and I farmed them. Also, in WoW there are far more nodes available and farming nodes whether mining or herbs there would be far more available than in GW2. I’m talking stacks and stacks of mats from a typical farming session—far beyond what is possible in GW2. I’m afraid the question still stands. How is this possible in a game like WoW without the economy collapsing?

DR does act to deter bots. You are correct that it also affects the public. Think of this more like police doing road block Breathalyzer tests (do they do that where you live?). You get stopped whether you were drinking or not, and this is to deter people from drinking. Everyone is affected negatively. You can also think of it like security at an airport etc. It happens all the time that the general public receives inconvenience for the sake of the community at large.

Your individual example for WoW needs to be taken in the context of WoW as a whole. The fact that nodes can only be mined if you have that profession trained, and that a mine can only be mined by one person, and that loot can only be from the party are all important factors. The entire loot table in WoW is going to be less, because not everyone can tag something for loot. Here you have lots of people with little loot, in WoW you have less people with lots of loot. That is how it is possible. That is also why here the prices are much less than in WoW.

What is DR? Sorry, I’m sorta new to GW2 and all I do is WvW – but I’ve been thinking about doing some PvE to farm some gold to get a legendary.

Is there a cap on farming or something? I play quite a bit, 15-18 hours a day and I was going to go balls to the wall farming to get this legendary as quick as I can, so i can get back out into WvW.

DR = Diminishing Returns. If you kill the same creature in the same area over and over again, your loot will eventually diminish. For regular play, you should never notice it (I don’t), but if you farm somewhere you’ll notice it.

DR also affects dungeons, if you run the same dungeon path over and over again, the end reward will diminish. First run = 60 tokens, then 30 then 20 (i think? I always hit accept without looking at the numbers). The silver reward also reduces.

Hmm, so why do I always see people farming CoF P1 for gold if there’s DR? And thank you for answering my question.

After 3 runs the return is the same, and is still decent (just not as good as the first run). This resets after a day. The path if speedrun will take ~5-6 minutes, and if run in a decent non speedrun group will take ~10 minutes. The run is really fast, so even the diminished returns after the 3rd run produce decent gold. Also, you can log on a different character and get full benefit. It is common practice in my guild for 5 of us to run it and swap characters each run.

The police force/DR analogy is a bad one. What the police do is identify criminals and remove them. The best way to identify and remove bots absent something in the client like Warden is through data-mining techniques in a data warehouse. It is extremely easy to model bot-like behavior and identify the bots in the game data.

As far as DR and the economy go consider another large MMO with a similar economy, sans RLT, WoW. In WoW I often would craft a set of max-level gear for friends as it would quickly get them into heroics. It would take hours to farm the mats, and I did it in the same spot. At the end of the farming session I would be getting the same amount of mats as in the beginning of the session. How is it possible for this to happen without the economy collapsing around the players?

DR really has no reason for its existence and penalizes players simply for playing the game. It’s an idea whose time has gone.

Except the strongest part of the police force is their presence as a deterrent, not their actual actions. DR is like any form of crime deterrents.

Hard to compare WoW to GW2 in terms of economy, because in WoW there are a limited number of nodes. In GW2 everyone has their own nodes they can access, therefore these materials are effectively not limited. As for drops, WoW has much less spawning enemies than GW2, and anyone who tags an enemy in GW2 receives the loot, whereas in WoW only the party who attacked it first gets it. These additions make playing together more fun, but they also add a lot more loot. DR is the way to restrict or limit this loot in GW2. In WoW it is done by not allowing everyone to have access to the loot.

Edit: D’oh! Went and re-read your post, and realized I probably misunderstood your tone entirely—I thought you meant you were disbelieving that average players were up to rares, when you really meant you were disbelieving that the were only as far as rares, rather than the higher grades of gear. Which would put me at even more of a disadvantage compared to the guy in the video for not having gotten there yet. :-/ I’m more casual than I thought.

Hey Vulpis,

Yes, I was definitely in disbelief that average players only wore rares and not exotics. It is clearly the intent of ANet to make max gear easy to obtain.

Might I suggest the following: do what you are doing (maw, JP, other bosses etc), which is easily soloable. Buy a Mystic Salvage Kit (Master + Fine + whatever the other one is called + Mystic Stone into Mysitc Forge). Use Mysitc Salvage kit to salvage all yellows which are worth less than 30s and sell all yellows that are worth more than 30 s on TP. Sell all Ectos you get from salvaging. Within a week you should have enough gold to buy yourself full exotic gear.

Alternatively, you can run the events (meta events and smaller events) and hit up Karma vendors in Orr for Exotic gear. I find this is less desirable, because 1. you do not get the exact stats you want on your armour and 2. it seems slower.

I hope that helps!

Back to the topic about dungeons and non dungeons. We do expect dungeons in a game like this. This, as many MMO games, is based off of DND. In Dungeons and Dragons you team up with a few others and venture into a dungeon. That is where it came from (not WoW, go figure). It’s a lot of fun for some of us, and the entire reason we play the game.

There is waaaaaaaaay more soloable content then there are dungeons, and I appreciate that they added this one. Think of the ratio in living story of solo content vs dungeons. Think of the ratio in personal story. Think of the ratio of number of dynamic events to dungeons. Think of the ratio of number of zones to dungeons. The ratio is clearly in solo plays favour. Let us have our 1 off dungeons and stop trying to ruin the game for others.

Thanks.

Actually, that info probably will be rather useful as a starting point if i can ever make myself pick up the game again—I’d been zone-clearing the lower-level areas, and hadn’t gone to the level 80 ones yet other than poking my nose in to do the ‘Under New Management’ jumping puzzle (just as well, since I’m even less likely to bother getting their ‘normally’ since there’s no real point in bothering with the Personal Story anymore). I haven’t even looked at Orr yet—though I suspect I’m going to regret spending my karma on ‘cultural’ weapons when I do.

As for the rest of your post—to be honest, I don’t think anyone wants the dungeon removed. In fact, I quite fully support the folks that want it to be kept permanantly in some fashion. The core problem is how it ends up being a complete roadblock (there’s a much more appropriate term, but I don’t think the mods would allow it even if the filter did. ;-) ) to those who can not and/or will not tolerate the forced 5-man grouping (as compared to the open-world ‘show up and do stuff’ sort of thing). What’s desired is the dungeon and some other mission/instance/event that lets the rest of us reach the same goal.

I get your point, but my point is that I prefer these dungeons over the other content. The other content is easy enough that taking others just makes it waaaay to easy. If it were my way, I would have had every single personal story mission and every living story mission as a group event. This is similar to how Guild Wars 1 did it. One advantage is you could get henchmen in Guild Wars 1, so you could solo the group content.

If I were to suggest anything, I’d say keep the idea of grouped events the way they are, but add the ability for those who do not like to group to have an option such as henchmen.

After reading through the forums a bit I think some ppl are confused :P

1st up MMO Massively Multiplayer Online, this can mean many things but nowhere in the description does Massively Multiplayer Online mean 5 mans/dungeons, running about doing hearts, helping ppl do skillpoints, DE events are all Massively Multiplayer Online events, 5 man seems to limit the amount of players in groups or in play not really a Massively group, Multiplayer yes that word is right for 5mans but so is Mario kart :P

2nd up GW2 is a B2P game we paid for it, but yet we get a F2P game mechanics as in DR and the Gem store, first up DR was put in a while after launch to combat bots, with bots under control why is DR still here ? Gem Store is fine until they started to add new skins to the game only in store not as drops, F2P games fine u expect it but to pay for a game then get offered new skins as Shop only that’s not right.

3rd farming, many ppl play MMOs to relax, chill out and just grind mobs, and yet even with the slogan of “play your way” the ppl who like to farm are limited to how and were they can farm by the DR coding, again in a F2P game sure u expect some limits but GW2 isn’t free, it might help crafters make more of a profit, cheaper mats sell item for more like in any MMO.

1. Massive Multiplayer Online is an open world concept with many people. RPG’s are common to dungeons, do to their tie backs to Dungeons and Dragons. Cooperating is an assumed mechanism inherent in MMO’s. Therefore cooperative dungeons is expected in an MMORPG. Dynamic Events fit the bill for MMO as well. It’s great this game has both.

2. This game is buy 2 play and is not pay 2 win. Many free 2 play games are pay 2 win. That is the key difference. In reference to anti-bots, take this analogy. Assume the streets are rampant with criminals, you hire a police force to deal with the problem. Once the criminals are all in jail, do you fire the entire police force? No, you keep them there to enforce the peace and deter others from criminal behaviour.

3. The devs have said they are not anti-farming, so I am sure they are actively working on ways to ensure people can play the way they want while also not encouraging bots and destroying the economy. It is good that many materials are rare, this allows for a more healthy economy. You can play the way you want, as long as it doesn’t negatively effect the community as a whole.

3.b) You can play the way you want. You cannot get the rewards the way you want. If you want to kill the same thing over and over again, you can. Your rewards will diminish, but that doesn’t stop you from being able to kill it. If you want to say that rewards are part of playing the way you want, well I want to be given a legendary item ticket for logging in. kitten why can’t I play the way I want?! Kitten.

This in it’s entirety seem’s incompetent in it’s own. Passively but publicly attacking me for posting something that is actually a problem is rather naive but since we’re going there why not go with the flow eh?

You passively and publicly attacked ANet for something that you perceive is a problem, but actually isn’t.

You can easily get gold in this game through events/dungeons and TP. I have not ever felt the need to convert gems to gold, and have purchased all of my characters exotic gear. Granted, I do not yet have the gold for commander pin and/or legendary, but these are long term goals.

I am sorry to hear you were hacked and lost 465 gold, that does truly suck. However, if you feel the need to farm for gold, that is your problem. Anti-farming measures are in place for a couple of reasons, and it’s not in place to discourage farming. One reason is to deter botters, and another reason is to keep the economy in check. If they had lots of mats dropping, then the TP would overflow with them, and prices would drop. You would then get less gold for your troubles than you currently do.

Earlier the point was brought up that men are portrayed at least as much in a sexualized or offensive way as women in videogames. …. I’m still waiting for an actual good example.

I had been out of the conversation for awhile. A good example of sexualized men? Soul Calibur. The women are also very sexualized. When I played this game with my female friends they were definitely swooning over the men in the game, so I am certain that they are sexualized.

Being sexualized isn’t offensive in itself. But consistently being portrayed none stop as a sexualized stereotype, in your underwear, THAT is offensive. When female characters are being portrayed in a videogame, showing lots of cleavage, panties and thongs, there is no mistake regarding the intention of the designer: Its there to sexualize the character.

With male characters it is slightly different, since male characters dressed like a sort of conan-like warrior in a loincloth aren’t really being portraying in any sexualized way.

I am still not sure exactly what is offensive about being sexualized. Also, not every female is sexualized.

It is obviously their intention, because sex sells. I am all for equal rights and I do not want to offend anyone, but I am struggling to find out what is exactly offensive about sexualizing a character?

The only way I can see this as offensive is if:
1. You are forced to have a sexualized female character
2. You, as a female player, are treated poorly for either a) having a sexualized character or b) not having a sexualized character
3. You feel the need to dress in real life as your character in order to fit into society?

I don’t think any of those apply. Anyway, I am open to hearing your side, so please help me understand where you are coming from.

Personally I love my warrior too, but I have a Mesmer at 80 I also love. I got bored of Guardian fast though. You can melee with a Mesmer too btw, Sword/Focus is one of the best weapon sets for Mesmer, and in my opinion is much more fun than Warrior.

My Ele was pretty fun too, but got bored after awhile, and I am now levelling a ranger and am loving the bows!

So…. I don’t really agree. Melee and Range are both really fun in their own ways. Glad to hear that you know what you like though!

Even them portrayed as strong is objectifying.

That is also a stereotype yes. Not an offensive stereotype, but a stereotype none the less. I’m not offended by it, so I don’t see any reason to attack that particular one.

All it means is assigning s strong and dominant trait. Men normally get it done to them far more often for women.

That is not true, and I would love to see you cite examples of NEGATIVE stereotypes applied to men. Because that’s what we are discussing here. Not just stereotypes in general, but negative ones. Ones that are offensive.

Just wanted to jump in here. How is being sexualized negative? Personally, I’d love to feel sexualized. Sadly, I am not a big strong man, and am often not considered as such. Seeing strong, dominant men in media affects me similarly as women seeing slender and/or curvy women in media. The problem is not that it is a negative stereotype, the problem is this form of media breeds insecurity.

I do agree that this can be a problem, and it is hardly one-sided.

I really cannot understand the argument that skimpy armour is offensive to players. I can understand if you suggest that it breeds insecurity, in that you and/or other players feel they need to look and dress like these characters in order to feel attractive. If that is the case, it is definitely not one sided. I would love to look as attractive as many of the male characters in this game.

molten facility CAN be soloed if you really want to solo it that badly…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOSoOHZ3FCc

edit: and some other dungeons can be soloed as well.

Sorry—spending $100 or so (gems -> gold -> Purples) to get uber-geared like this guy (I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he earned either the items themselves or the gold to buy them from the Trader, as opposed to buying it indirectly with RL cash) isn’t a particularly viable--or palatable—option.
Show an average player being able to do it with just rares and maybe a few exotics, then we’ll be getting somewhere. Nice try, though.

The average player runs around in rares? That is news to me. :| It literally takes 12-15 gold to deck out in exotic gear from TP, or 250k Karma, or a bunch of dungeon runs (or a combination of the 3).. It shouldn’t take you more than a week to get fully in exotics after you hit 80. To give casual players the benefit of the doubt, this should most definitely not take more than a month. On my last 2 characters, it takes me 30 seconds to gear my character in exotics upon hitting 80. The first took about 2 weeks and the 2nd took about 2 days.

I am leveling my 5th character through starter areas (well more than 5th, I’ve deleted a few alts in the past, but have 4 80’s). I am finding this run to be the easiest by far, which I attribute entirely to the profession I am playing. I am leveling a Ranger, and I have a Thief, Ele, Mes and War at 80. There was definitely a difference in difficulty based on profession, but I don’t notice any difference in actual enemies.

In terms of what profession I found easiest to hardest for leveling?
Ranger > Thief > Mesmer > Warrior > Ele

I’ve levelled up primarily in Queensdale/Kessex, but I do venture to the other territories as well.

I also wish that dynamic events spawned MORE often in starter areas. They are a great way to level up and gain experience/money, and I often find myself running in circles trying to find them.

I currently have 4 characters at 80 and another on the way.

3 of my characters have ascended items (ranging from 1-5 ascended items, none with 6 as of yet). I have only been collecting ascended items since March. I guess 5 months to get them all geared is possible. However, I don’t think that is too slow. I do, however, think it is too fast to ‘pretty much’ fully gear them. You can have them equipped with all exotics the same day that you hit 80, because it is so easy to do so. I am happy there is at least this miniscule progression.

TLDR I have multiple 80’s and am far from upset about the Laurel limit.

Also many people would not agree that spending hours in WvW = grinding

Thats just says you don’t mind grinding (or at least that form), not that it isn’t grinding. It is under any definition.

Hmmm, perhaps. I do hate repetitive tasks and what I generally accept to be grinding. I find running a random dungeon with a group of friends is not a grind.

I consider a grind to be repeating the same dungeon over and over again in a relatively short time frame.

Well since you can only get certain “gifts” if you grind a particular dungeon daily (Gift of Ascalon for example) or participate in WvW for quite a long time (Gift of Battle) besides the Gift of Exploration, I respectfully dispute your statement.

Rares are pretty much 100% for Mystic Forge and Salvaging. They are more of a crafting material than an actual armour/weapon tier.

MMOs are for that.To meet new people and to group up

That’s really narrow. MMO’s should be for a wide range of people, not your own personal ideal.

I find it uncomfortable chatting with people I don’t know. Yet I enjoy open world (even with those pesky other players around!), I enjoy WvW. I enjoy co-op, with an actual person in the same room as me. But I don’t pug. I would have done this duo’ed, I might have hot-joined a random group – but LFG’ing for access to content? Ugh.. no thanks. Sorry if I’m not sociable enough to play an MMO.

This shouldn’t even be an issue, though. There’s no reason for ANet to be forcing dungeons into story content. They could have used the plot to introduce the dungeon, without making it a mandatory step.

It’s like ANet has two playbooks – one for creating accessible, inviting content for a more casual audience, and the other for more hardcore team players. I can respect that – GW2 needs to appeal to different types of players, but why bind the two together if you don’t have to?

I’ll save some of you the time: “Duh, it’s an MMO stupid!”

1. There is nothing mandatory about it

2. MMO’s are designed around having a massive world with other people that you can tackle content with

3. Sounds like you want a Single player RPG or PVP only

4. It’s funny because your first line can be said back to you. “That’s really narrow. MMO’s should be for a wide range of people, not your own personal ideal.” They did the solo content, now they are doing the multiplayer content. Wide range of people.

Cheers mate.

So much whining about having to group up for this dungeon. How can so many antisocial people be playing this online game? Go play your Wii if you don’t want to play with other people. That’s like going to a steakhouse and then complaining that you had to eat steak.

Nope…it’s more like going to the steakhouse and the only thing at all you’re allowed to eat is steak, despite having been seated right next to the salad bar.
There’s a vast difference between ‘Playing with other people in the world’ and ‘Being forced into a group with them’.

It’s not really like that at all. There is content for both groups and for solo. It’s like going t a restaurant and having a big menu fool of different foods, and there is this one item called a ‘platter’ that is designed to be eaten with other people. It’s really unfair though, because on the menu right above the platter is a single-person appetizer, so it’s really unfair that the Restaurant has made this item that requires a group of people to eat.

You have to do WoW raiding, apparently, as the instances needed to complete the achievement, unlike every other part of the Living Story content, aren’t soloable.

Um WoW Raiding is a completely different experience than a 5-man dungeon that can be done with a PuG and is not super easy nor super hard.

Raiding requires at the least 10 people … To equate the Molten Facility with WoW Raiding is just rather inane.

Given that WoW also does 5-man raids, and every other part of the F&F arc…including the previous pair of instances that were designed for 5-person groups…were still soloable (rather difficult, but still doable, which is exactly the challenge level I’m looking for)? There’s really no excuse for ending the arc like this.

It really is nothing like a raid, but it is very much like a dungeon.

The first two dungeons were anything but difficult. You may want to check your gear or play a different profession. They were some of the easiest content in the game.

It’s hard to argue the point about it being bad/good that they ended it like this. I like that they ended it in a dungeon, you don’t. Many people love the new dungeon, as do I. This is an MMO and much of it is designed around partying with others, so don’t be surprised when some content requires it. I actually appreciate that some of the content is soloable and some is not. It gives a good variety.

People hate Orr because they do realize it is not a single player or 5-man area.

You get overwelmed because you enter it under welmed.

Per Anet it is for large groups nor asolo area

Except you have solo personal story missions in it. It’s also entirely solo-able.. I just did it. It’s frustrating, but doable.

Pilot/Captain

Has the ability to command vessels. On land this could be a charr tank, on the ocean a pirate ship or submarine, and perhaps in some areas this could be an air vessel.

These ships/vessels could carry your entire party. Each would have it’s own weapons /attacks.

Once the ship is destroyed your weapon skills are greyed out until you can summon a new vesel. Vessel’s are attached to F1-4 and have a long cooldown.

Advantage is
- being able to carry team
- great armor for you and your team
- decent damage

Disadvantage
- Slow attack rate
- have to summon vessel before attacking – like throwing up your mantras

It’s not the game that’s farm inducing, it’s your view on it that’s wrong.

I love when people claim that the play style, and method of enjoyment of a game, is “wrong”. Arrogance can be so amusing when it isn’t annoying as kitten.

True, but in reference to the post, it makes sense. The post says that farming is mandatory. It is not the play-style that is wrong, it’s “farming is mandatory” that is wrong. Farming is not mandatory, it is one avenue to achieving something. People do it in this game, just as any other, to get what they want faster. It’s not required/mandatory.

You can get your legendary via normal play, by just depositing collectibles as you gain them. Every now and then, check your bank and see how much you have. Over time, you’ll get what you need. It won’t be as fast or direct as farming, but you’re more likely to have more fun that way.

Looks like most people posting here have no idea about the lore or haven’t done any of the “Story” quests.

IT’S SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THAT AND BE FILLED WITH THE UNDEAD!

Yeah, I do not care about the undead. A few notes though..

1. People are complaining about the lack in variety of the undead. I think someone above mentioned all the cool undeads in GW1.

2. Orr is supposed to look like that, up until the 2nd last story mode mission. Then it’s supposed to be cleansed, but it isn’t. I can understand why they cannot change it for MMO reasons, but lore-wise, doesn’t make sense.

3. Personally, I do not like Orr because it’s frustrating. It’s fine if you are running events or doing the story, but it’s a huge pain to do map completion. I am running to a Vista and a zombie pulls me back and a tar elemental immobilizes me and then i get poisoned etc etc.. I just want to get to that Vista!! (or skill point, or waypoint). I realize it is supposed to be challenging, but instead it’s just frustrating.

4. Whether something is supposed to look like that or not does not take away from the fact that it’s not as visually appealing. Personally, I’d like more places with the visual appeal of Bloodtide Coast.

+1 for this, I would love to see added reward for doing harder content. Perhaps it could be a higher rate of T6 mats or something. (If it is now, an even higher rate than it is, something that will actually encourage people to do it). It should be a faster method of obtaining these items, but also much harder than farming Orr etc.

For WoW haters.. They are asking for 1 aspect of WoW, not the entire game to be cloned. There are many many things GW2 is better at, but this is something WoW has done right, in my opinion.

I levelled a Thief, Ele, Mesmer and Warrior to 80 and Guard/Ranger/Necro in the lower levels (~to level 15).

I’d say that Thief is the easiest to level by far. All of the 4 of them are quite squishy, even heavy armor.

I found Warrior did a lot of damage, but died the most. It also was the most dependent on gear.

Ele was fun to level, but required a lot of movement and kiting.

Mesmer did low damage during leveling, but had good survivability with the clones.

Thief did great damage levelling and easily evaded all attacks by open world enemies. It’s been awhile since I played it, so it may have been nerfed to oblivion, not sure. Equip up 2 daggers, run up the enemy or enemies (can easily take on a group). Hit 3, wait 1/2 sec, hit 3, wait 1/2 sec, hit 3, wait 1/2 sec, hit F1 2x, hit 3 – they’re dead. All of them. This works best if you trait it so stealing with F1 adds initiative. 3, for the unawares, is death blossom and allows you to stack 3x bleeding and does AoE damage while evading all attacks.

Do any girls in the real world dress this skimpy?

Yes. I wouldn’t see anyone wear that specifically, but I see girls wearing very short, shorts and halter tops / bikini tops which are more revealing than that.

Do any girls in the real world dress this skimpy?

Sexism is not a matter of being forced to wear something. Its the persistent idea that women are sexy barbie dolls, and men are not. Its the different treatment of both genders that makes it sexism. And its hard to deny that there is a double standard.
[/quote]

Both men and women can be sexy, but what is sexy for each is different. This is based on the shape of bodies and what are attractive traits. For example, large muscles on men are often considered quite attractive, but on girls it’s considered beefy and less attractive. Big breasts on girls are attractive, but on men it’s not. See where I am going?

That is why the armor should not be the exact same for both, but the quality, type and amount of choices should be present. Sorry if I was not clear, but I meant that if each had 3 choices and 1 was sexy (for that gender, maybe pants and topless for man and skirt + shirt for girl – very different but equal imo), 1 was medium with some skin showing and 1 was conservative, that would not be sexist. Even though each gender are wearing different things (i.e. you cannot get a topless female and you cannot get a man with a skirt).

Part of sexism is definitely being forced to do something. For example: a woman doing laundry is not sexist, a woman forced to do laundry very well could be. I agree that being forced into a choice is only part of sexism and is not mutually exclusive to sexism, but having unfair choice attributed to one sex over the other is. This can go either way (in favour of men or women). For example, you could argue that it is sexist that there are very few sexy armor’s for male characters.

newsflash you can be a woman and still be sexist wow what a concept, hence why utilizing being a woman in this argument is damaging to the opinion of other women in this thread. the fact that you’re admitting they’re using their gender to legitimize their defense because being a man in this argument automatically makes it sexist is why it’s sexist.

… … Um.. Obviously? What the…? You can be a man and still have someone be sexist towards you too. Go figure. That’s not the point. The point is that they saying they are a woman adds context to their point of view, as the discussion is around sexism.

any -ism is the systematic oppression of the given party. you’re assuming men and women are starting on equal ground here, that’s cute.

I suppose it depends on how you define equal ground. If by equal ground you mean they are identical clones of one and other, then no. If you mean they both have choice and neither gender is at a disadvantage, then yes, they are on equal ground. I agree with your definition on -ism. I do not agree that there is a systematic oppression of women in this game.

neglecting the fact that real life women are held to absolutely ridiculous standards by mainstream media, yes, women are allowed and should be encouraged to wear what they feel comfortable wearing and it doesn’t hurt anyone else. (and i don’t give a kitten about their “father’s” opinions because their father’s opinions shouldn’t dictate what they can and cannot wear, why would you even bring this up, it’s skeezy and implies kittenshaming).

I agree about mainstream media, but it is also sexist to assume that mainstream media has no effect on men in our society as well. The point about the father matters, because the women are choosing to wear what they want, even though a man is telling them otherwise. Not sure why bringing it up implies skeeze or whatever you’re saying?

Anyway.. my main point is that I think there should be more choice for both genders, more skimpy and more conservative. I do not think these armors should look exactly alike, as that would be stupid. It could also be sexist. For example, if they designed it on a man and put it on a female, that’d be sexist. If they designed it on a female and put it on a man, it’d be sexist. The only way to keep it not sexist, and look Ok is to design them separately.

You know, I was going to try and think of a way to respond to this with some semblance of civility, but seeing as a few people already have and the kind of response they’ve gotten, I’m not even going to bother. In summary:

qq cry more and go play one of the dozens of other games/mmos that have skimpy armour and GTFO GW2. More variety? Sure. More absurd, skimpy armour designs? No, thanks.

This game already has enough cheerleader skirts to go around; IMO the design team has done a fair job of toeing that line, and I want to see them dial it back and give the ladies some kitten armour that looks brilliant and isn’t sexualized like the rest of the women in gaming.

Speaking of, to the women wanting skimpier armour; that’s cool, that’s fine, but please stop using the “I’m a woman and I think this is a great idea and therefore all women probably think this is a great idea” argument because you are MARGINALIZING LEGITIMATE CONCERNS OF OTHER WOMEN WHO DO NOT FEEL THE SAME WAY.

Let me reiterate: you, as women, are allowed to like the idea of your characters in skimpy armour. You are not allowed to assume that, being a woman, this allows you to speak for other women on this board who do not.

To everyone claiming that this is a fantasy game and therefore real life does not apply: while yes, this setting and the characters, fashions etc therein may be fantastical and do not operate by a standard we can judge, THIS GAME AND THE DESIGN CHOICES IN IT ARE NOT MADE INSIDE A VACUUM.

Our society, and gamer culture in particular, is inherently misogynistic and so help me if someone tries to dispute that (no doubt someone will, but it is not my responsibility to educate you; go do your own research on the treatment of women in gamer culture).

So coming here and saying “needs moar skin” as though real world consequences to that request do not apply is bullroar. So express your opinion all you want, but don’t be surprised when someone is outraged at the idea of oversexualization being demanded in yet another corner of the Internet where it’s already prevalent but apparently not enough for dipkittens like you.

This game has 1 cheerleader skirt. Believe me, I have been looking. I am not a huge fan of it either (light armor beginner skirt). There are 0 skirts on Medium armor, several long (ugly imo) skirts on Light armor (I want above the knee) and 1 short-ish skirt on Heavy armor that has weird fish-net.

To all the women saying they are women and they approve of the addition are entitled to their opinion and are saying they are a woman for context. Given that the nature of the argument against this is sexism, it’s quite valid.

On that note, people who say it is sexist, I just don’t even.. Why is it sexist to give people a choice in what they wear? It is only sexist if what they wear is forced on them. That is to say there is 1 set and that 1 set is skimpy, then yes, it’s sexist. Likewise, if there was 1 set and that 1 set was pants and a sweater, that is still sexist. This, naturally, assumes that men characters have more choice. If both are given equal amount of choice (not necessarily the same choices, but the same amount of choices), then that is not sexist. The reason why they do not have to be the same choices is because men and women are actually different. What looks good on one does not look good on the other. What men find attractive are generally not what women find attractive. Men’s body shape is different than women’s body shape.

Taking into account real world? Girls, especially in the summer, show a lot more skin than most characters in this game. I show a lot of skin on my character, and it is definitely similar to what I see girls wearing during the summer months. They wear that by choice. No one forced them to wear it. I would even bet that their fathers are against them wearing it, but the girls want to wear it anyway.

Your last paragraph is extremely hypocritical. You seem to think that everyone can have an opinion, but to everyone who has a different opinion than you, you look down on them and seem angry at them. You should not be surprised that me (and others) may be outraged by your thoughtless post.

+1 for more skimpy armor and +1 for less skimpy armor. Pro choice.

My problem with the ‘grind’ in this game is the huuge gap between Exotics and Legendaries. Exotics are ridiculously easy to get and then you have to farm endlessly to get an exotic.

I’d prefer to receive small incremental upgrades every time I play (or after every week of play or something).

Though, I get that is not what this game is about as they are trying to avoid a ‘gear grind’. I think we just have different views on what a grind is. Personally, I find incremental upgrades rewarding and tedious farming a grind.

So SAB, F&F, Guild Missions, Daily and Monthly Reward Systems, and New SPvP doesn’t qualify as expansion worthy content for you?

It does to you?? Great additions, but I’d hardly call it an expansions worth of content. At least not compared to the games that I have played expansions on (WoW, Starcraft, Guild Wars 1). They do seem like decent patch updates, but expansion worthy? Not at all.

Expansion worthy would have all of that + a whole new set of maps in PvP + a whole new area in PvE with several zones + possibility of level increase + several new armor sets + possibility of new race and/or professions.

I understand that would be hard to do, and that is why I was skeptical when they said an expansion worth of content was coming. However, I was also very excited for it. The over-hype has lead to a major let-down. High expectations usually leads to disappointment.

If they had not made that claim, I would be ecstatic with all of the amazing content updates they have added.

Why does everyone hinge on every word of what a dev says? People here “expansion worth of content” and decide it means exactly what the player wants it to mean. And if it doesn’t stand up to your definition, then clearly they lied…

There have been a ton of updates, and to me it did feel like an expansion worth for a game that is under a year old still. People will find anything to complain about in a game, even though it is a no sub, buy to play game..

And I would love if people could stop comparing GW2 to games that are 8-10+ years old. A bit of common sense is in order..

I do not hinge on every word a developer says. I was, however, very excited to hear that we would receive an expansions worth of content. From the industry, this comes with certain expectations.

It was ANet’s intention to use these industry standards to raise hype about this content, which failed to deliver on these standards/expectations. I have yet to play the new content, and am very excited to try out the new dungeon and updates. However, it is already a disappointment, because it does not meet what they originally stated.

That is fine. However, I will be taking future announcements with a grain of salt. It saddens me to say this, because I do believe the ANet dev team has done an amazing job with this game and I really loved GW1. I also think they do an amazing job of listening to their community.

The article is about Low Level, Mid Level and End Game Economy. The End Game economy is definitely minimal in comparison to the analysis of the rest though.

I do agree with one major point though, crafting is essentially useless. Everything you can craft is cheaper to buy on the TP than it is to craft. It would be in your best interest to sell the mats and buy the item than it would be to craft the item. The only 2 reasons to craft are 1. it’s fun? (not for me) or 2. experience
