To be honest stats are an outdated mechanic and an RPG can go without it easily. No rules or boundaries would make it a sandbox and there’s a market for that as well.

To be honest RPGs are an outdated genre and it’s all about retro indie games.

Actually, a game without stats is pretty much a group of people sitting around running improv theatre for each other/themselves. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s less a “game” as we’re talking about here and more a “thing to do to kill some time”.

(Yes, I’ve done this sort of thing, mind you. I lost my taste for it after a few years.)

So chivalry is not a game? No actual game could take the mechanics of this fighting game and use it as its own combat system?
Shooters don’t have stats. They’re not worse as a game because of it.
Dark Messayah didn’t have stats. Just lots of spells.
Imagine an RPG with lots of different items having different uses and abilities, but no stats to speak about.

In my opinion it sounds pretty boring.

Also, in my opinion, guild wars is too light on the stats.

you might want to look into a game with a steeper vertical progression then. Like WoW. Because I prefer actual skill based games.

I have played WoW, and I did enjoy it. I like Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 more though. To say there is no skill involved in any of these games is a bit of an overstretch.

1. Choosing your stats is part of your skill. Preparation in your customization takes thought. Specifically, one must weigh the benefits and costs of choosing certain stats over others and then applying them to your build of traits and general playstyle.

2. Performing your prepared build takes skill. That is why when you run a dungeon with newbies you die a lot more than when you run it with an experienced group. Even if you had the same 5 classes and same 5 sets of gear.

As you told me that I should leave and play WoW because I like stats (even though this game has stats????), I will provide you with the same courtesy. Go play call of duty.

I agree with a few of the posts above. Leveling is a core aspect of the game. If you do not like leveling, you likely won’t like the game. (At least on the PvE side of things).

I have never bought gems to convert into gold, and I am no farming player (I loathe farming with a passion).
You don’t need gold for gear – if you run dungeons you can work toward exotic gear while making gold. Or you can spend karma in Orr. You need gold for travel, but one DE or heart usually is more than enough to cover that expense, so unless you bunny hop all over the maps you should be fine. Same goes for repair expenses.

So I really wonder: what are you spending so much gold on?

Like they have a horrible LFG system, so is no point go for dungeons and farm. And is boring and boring. Also dungeons itself isn’t interested. I think this game is just for free to play players, where no need to think about contest. You just playing same game like others free to play. Nothing interested.

What?

I think what you are trying to say is that you are not interested in dungeons, and that doing dungeons for gear is something inherent to free to play models.

1. I am sorry to hear you do not like dungeons, but many people do. It is very common for people who play MMORPG’s to enjoy dungeons.

2. Dungeons for gear is common among all MMORPG’s (at least the ones I have tried). This includes pay to play and free to play models.

I do not know what you meant by “I think this game is just for free to play players, where no need to think about contest.”

I also enjoyed “Also dungeons itself isn’t interested.” I had no idea the dungeons were not interested in farming.

I don’t think you guys understand the very meaning of the words MMORPG.

Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game.

This game should have hundreds of other players connected to a central server or multiple servers. These players should be visible, interact with the world and other players in various ways. Role Playing Game is where most people get confused. It has a very simple definition. It’s a game where the player assumes a role or multiple roles within a one or more narratives.

Character development through talents, abilities and traits is not necessary but; can immerse the player into the narrative very well if done correctly.

The stat progression part that you people keep talking about is not progression. It’s a treadmill. The numbers are getting higher but the ratios are always the same. What’s the difference if you deal 100 damage and your target has 1000 health versus you dealing 100,000 damage and your target has 1,000,000 health? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Getting a +1 of anything is idiotic and shows people’s complete lack of understanding in the most basic arithmetic.

The ratio’s are not always the same. If it is, then feel free to go solo some Risen in Orr with your level 5 character.

Cheers

I see my character gaining numbers (levels) but they don’t make me feel more powerful. The problem is that I am downgraded to the level of the area I am currently in.

Being level 20 and almost dying to two level 9 mobs is a terrible feeling. What is the point in leveling if all that work is negated by zone mechanics?

There are two options that would make the experience feel better.

1. Don’t downgrade my level and allow me to one-shot lower level mobs. In this way, I would actually feel more powerful as I leveled and would feel like my work is being rewarded.

or

2. Remove levels and leveling altogether. Don’t allow me to see that meaningless number that taunts me with every pull. I would rather not see any level number on my character at all than to see the green ‘down’ arrow next to an artificially deflated number.

Your equipment is down-levelled too, so make sure you have equipment appropriate for your level. i.e. if you are level 20 and are down-levelled to 10, and wearing level 15 gear – your gear will be down-levelled to ~7.5. That means a level 20 wearing 15 gear is worse off than a level 10 wearing 10 gear.

On topic of levelling as an archaic concept, I disagree. I think that levelling up is one of the most attractive parts of an RPG. I do not really have an argument for this, as it is entirely an opinion, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents.

GW1 option of having max level is 20 and you are 20 for most of the game was a good alternative. This only works with the skill progression that GW1 had, where you are constantly acquiring new skills. That wouldn’t work in this game where you can gain all of your skills so quickly / weapon dependent.

Finally Understand who GW2 Demographic is!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Jemmi.6058

Here are some demographics for you:

Average incomes as of 2011

Ages 15 to 24 — 30.5k
25 to 34 — 50.5k
35 to 44 — 62k
45 to 54 — 64k
55 to 65 — 56k

which of these groups do you think has the most disposable income? I think the 35 to 44 and the 45 to 54.

Who would you market a game for? me? The 35 to 44 and 45 to 54 groups.

gee who has done that? Arenanet

what is the game called? Guild Wars 2

Please don’t use facts and logic. Some people don’t like to be confronted with cold numbers.

Just as a thought experiment, regardless of demographic. How much disposable income would a gamer have who plays 10 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Assuming you mean 10 hours a day, 7 days a week (average) – 70 hours a week
Assuming 2 days a week are off
Assuming 8 hours sleep time
Assuming 8 hour work days, 5 days a week

2 days per week at 16 hours waking time = 32 hours
5 days per week at 8 hours = 40 hours
That leaves 8 hours work and 8 hours sleep! (assuming you work from home too haha).

Ok off of a lot of assumptions, one COULD have that playtime and work full time. Might be a cruddy life though?

In RL you have to be paying attention to the person throwing the gernade to have any clue as to where it lands. Looking at the ground with your back turned to them does not give you any indication of where it is going to land.

Guild Wars 2 Story Research

in Personal Story

Posted by: Jemmi.6058

Jemmi.6058

1) What is your age? Gender?

28, Male

2) How important is a game’s story to you? Why?

Very important. Stories are the reason I play games.

3) Within a game’s story, are you more interested in individual characters, or in bigger events and groups?

I am interested in both pretty much equally. A story with a poorly developed character, but awesome events will be rather dull to me, likewise a story with a greatly developed character, but nothing happening in the world around them will also bore me.

4) In regards to your own character, do you identify with them? In other words, do you view your character as yourself? Or do you view your character as a separate entity which you created?

I do not identify with my character as my own in terms of the graphics or their actions. I do identify with my character in terms of my guild. i.e. when someone speaks to my characters name in guild chat, I identify in that they are talking to me. My avatar is not.

5) Do you view your character’s progression as something you create/determine, or something the game itself creates/determines?

I view it as something the game itself creates and determines.

6) What do you view as your character’s ultimate goal? Is it different from the goal of defeating the final dungeon or raid boss?

Originally, the goal was defeat the final boss. Now, I do not have an ultimate goal.

7) How effective do you find personal story in MMORPGs (usually done through personal instances/quests)? Do you find it disjointed from the rest of the game, or do you feel it fits well with the rest of the game?

I feel that stories in MMORPGs are great. However, I find the personal story in GW2 is not. I do not like the choice system, as for every choice given, there is a loss in quality to the overall plot. This is due to (but not limited to) lack of character growth, providing generic/vague responses to avoid consistency issues, dropping extra characters like flies, reducing plot twists and so on. If there was one set story, the story could be told exactly how the writers intended it. However, with split stories, the quality degrades in favour of consistency.

8) How do you view the idea that many other players are also playing through the same personal story?

Doesn’t affect me. It’s akin to me viewing the idea that many other people are watching the same movie or reading the same book. This likely has to do with the the fact that I do not identify with my character.

9) How do you view your character’s personal story in relation to the larger stories in the game, or the lore of the game? Do you see a difference between individual story and group story in the game?

I am a little confused on what you are asking here. IMO the characters personal story is the larger story in the game and the lore of the game. The dungeon stories feel rather random and I do not really count them. I see the individual story as the ‘main’ story and the dungeon stories as the ‘side’ stories of side characters.

I hope I was helpful!

Why so hard?

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Jemmi.6058

Jemmi.6058

The instances are no more difficult than open world enemies.

I’m not so sure. They seem to have enormous pools of health and hit harder than ‘normal’ mobs. Took my lvl 70 ranger nearly 60 hits to take down an average minion in these instances. The mobs, on the other hand, take half her health with a single hit. Without the pets and the friendly npc’s tanking while I sit there mindless plinking away with the shortbow, this would be a real pain in the neck.

I’m wondering if they have a specific resistance to projectile weapons…

The extra health and extra damage is easily counter balanced by the fact you have an NPC helping you. I found running the instance similar to soloing Dynamic events in the open world (not group events).

Anyone else hate Orr?

Jemmi.6058

I did not read this entire thread, so this may have been said. Here are my 2 cents on Orr.

I am not a huge fan of the look of it. I prefer beautiful, colourful areas. It is too dark and brown/grey for my likings. On that note, I would like to see more bright and colourful areas added.

I am not a huge fan of playing in it. I often like to run around from place to place, but in Orr you instantly get attack and pulled by Risen and knocked over and crippled and everything in between. I find this very frustrating. They are added simply to stop running and not at all for adding challenge to fights.

I am not a huge fan of the fights as they are not challenging nor entertaining. The enemies are dull (especially after awhile as they are all the same), but mechanics are simple and the fights are either insanely easy or insanely hard. This means that you can either faceroll it or find a zerg. There is very little middle ground imo. Most of the rest of the areas has ample middle ground.

To sum it up? I race through Orr for the story and leave it and never go back.

If the devs are reading this, I do not mean to offend, but am only trying to provide my personal preference and criticism. I do love the game as a whole and am grateful for the hard work you have put into the game.

There is a +1 button on every post, that’d be your like button you wish for

Also, nicely posted, but I disagree.

You can play casually and still plan life around the game sometimes. i.e. “MOTD Guild Mission, bounty this Wednesday at 6pm!” so a member logs in at 6pm on Wednesday to do it. Doesn’t mean they are hardcore, but they did plan around logging in at that time.

You can also play hardcore but plan your game around your life. Say you are a student, you have exams coming up and put the game on hold for awhile while you study. Prior to that you were playing lengthy hours, have 100% map completion, PVP excessively, live on the forums, take the game very seriously, know every patch, run every dungeon etc etc (one could say hardcore).

Anyway, I do not think it’s quite so simple.

Hmmm well thank you for saying I suck :P

I also said that I would bring a thief into my group; however, I do not suggest making one with dungeons as your end goal. I did and I regretted it.

My Mesmer easily does more damage than my ele and my ele more than my Thief. That is not to say my Thief does not damage, it just does less damage in dungeons. That is primarily because melee’ing often results in death (for me), so I have to spend a lot of time ranged and their ranged are weak from my experience. In the open world, my thief does the most damage.

Granted maybe I needed a better build, or better gear. It’s also been awhile since I had my thief as my main character. There have been many changes and I am also a better player now.

Personally I do not mind bringing Thieves in my group.

However, I have played one as my first primary character, and I do not recommend them for dungeons. It mostly depends on your playstyle, but I don’t like thieves ranged. I use D/D, and you can die very fast in dungeons running up melee. I will often swap between shortbow and D/D in dungeons, use steal to get up close – use Death Blossom a few times, then dodge roll back and swap to bow.

I would say after using an Ele and Mesmer that both easily outshine the Thief in damage and support performance in dungeons. The only one thing my thief is superior at is reviving allies with their AoE stealth.

Jemmi.6058

Yesterday I figured out the meaning of hardcore gaming.

In the evening, my fiancée told me she needed a few hours of sauna. I said sure, quit the game and we drove to the sauna.

Hardcore would have been to tell her I had to kill some dragon with some guys on the other side of the evening for 4 more hours.

How many of you would have told your significant others to stay home because of a videogame? This question is at the core of hardcore gaming, and why most GW2 players don’t want things like raids, trinity and the like. Even a Guild Bounty only takes half an hour for a skilled team.

I don’t really agree with that. Finishing what you are in the middle of doing does not necessarily mean you are hardcore about it. Imagine you were doing laundry and she said she wanted to go to the sauna and you said you need to wait for the dryer to finish. Are you hardcore about Laundry? Nope.

However, sticking for 4 more hours may give you that title. Simply saying, I am in a dungeon right now, let’s go after is fine. That would be asking her to wait without classifying yourself as hardcore, imo.

I understand the loss of the map for the old game feel. However, the big difference is that in older games you did not have a team of others who could venture off. If you did have a team they were confined to the same area, so you couldn’t lose them.

I was playing the other day and got separated from my team and took me awhile to find them again. A mini map would be great for that reason.

Charr were very much a race in GW1 (right from the first area in the first game) and have the longest history in this game. Asurans and Norns were added much later (EoTN) and Sylvari are new to GW2.

I would doubt that Charr were ripped from WoW as GW1 and WoW came out close to the same time and GW1 was long in development, meaning the Charr were designed before the success of WoW was apparent.

Charr make sense as a playable race due to their history in the game. They are a much more intelligent race than an Ogre would be. Ogre’s are barely sentient.

All of that said, Charr is my least favourite race.

Actually the Tauren made their first appearence in Warcraft 3, so it would be possible for them to be an influence on GW1.

I don’t think they are, as many people have said other than being a big, beastial race they have absolutely nothing in common, but chronologically it would be possible.

I know they were in Warcraft 3. I was assuming that the suggestion was, Guild Wars copied WoW, because WoW was the most popular MMO. It is possible that Guild Wars copied earlier non MMO games, and I am sure they did to some extent.

First, Ogres are not all that dumb. In my Norn storyline I went to help the ogres and they had a leader that was quite intelligent and charming. As a hero, you can be smarter than the typical ogre grunt.

Second, even if you assume the ogres are big dummies, that can be a fun role-playing thing. I remember in EQ people that played ogres would go around and be like “me look for group, me like to smash things.” It was hilarious fun.

Also, ogre females would give a chance to have a female humanoid model that doesn’t look all cutesy or sexy.

I would play as an Ogre in a second.

My bad, I have not played the Norn story line. I have had very little experience with Ogres, and the few experiences suggested they were not intelligent. Granted they do have TP’s and things in Ascalon.

Charr are pretty much ripped straight from the Tauren of WoW. And I’m pretty sure they are one of the more unpopular races in that game. Not sure why a developer would choose to make that a playable race. A better alternative would have been Ogres. Again, you want more people to play your game then give them cool races that they want to be. Who wants to be a cow?

You know, come to think of it, Humans in GW2 are kind of like a clone of Blood Elves in WoW. kitten copy cats.

You can just let your NPC ally tank everything and it will never die. Then you just DPS from behind him/her. I did this without even intending too, I just ran to kite and the other stepped in to tank.

It was easier than most personal story missions.

It happens when you leave the instance after completing an end boss of one of the worlds (the cages or the toad). This is because the game forces you to zoom out for the boss and then when you leave the instance it locks it that way.

The fix for me has been to exit the game completely and log back in. (going to character screen does not work).

My point is it’s impossible to please everyone. I would say that A-Net has pleased more than they have displeased with this patch, so I would consider that a success for them. Again, I’ve already stated that I don’t particularly care for what they did but I can appreciate that most others are loving it.

Complaining at this point isn’t going to change anything. People will continue to kitten but it’s not like they are being forced to play the content. Also, I seriously doubt it slowed down their other development efforts considering they’ve already said it was a small group of people that worked on it.

I disagree. Letting Anet know that there are a bunch of us out there that don’t enjoy this type of content may lead them to consider approaching content with a bit more variety. Aside from the Living Story content, all of the patches so far have featured the “jumping” mechanic quite prominently. Personally I’d like to see something different the next time out, and I think this forum is the place to make that suggestion.

I have no problem with the number of threads out there congratulating Anet on a job well done despite the fact that I don’t enjoy the content. Perhaps we could be allowed to enjoy the same privilege of being allowed to voice our opinion?

By patches, do you mean Holiday Events? All the patches have definitely not focused on jumping. I would also argue, neither have the holiday events. Each holiday event has had JP’s yes, but it was not necessarily the core. What makes it the core is the sheer number of people interested in that aspect.

Breaking it down.

Halloween → new skins, JP, new PvP thing (i never tried it can’t speak much to it), brawls, dynamic events, reskinned areas, scavenger hunt, dungeon

Christmas → new skins, JP, brawls, dynamic events, reskinned areas, scavenger hunt?, dungeons

Living story → new skins, dynamic events, reskinned areas, dungeons

April fools → new skins, dynamic events, dungeon with JP aspect

I may be missing things as well? Anyway, they each have a lot more than just JP added. They each added a number of different things to cater to a large number of crowds. You are focusing on the one aspect that you liked the least and that many liked the most, thus it appears they focused on that. In reality, it was you and the player-base who focused on it.

This could be implemented by have a few different skeleton options for each weapon/armor type, then several texture choices, several cut choices and finally several animation choices. Assuming by several, I mean 4, that’d be 4×4×4x4 or 256 possible combinations for every weapon/armor type

Most rares have a buy order close to the price of an ecto from what I’ve found, so its never really seemed like a winning proposition to gamble on the odds of NOT getting an ecto.

Have had the exact opposite impression. I gamble because you may get more than 1 ecto. You also get a sigil out of it for 2-4 s more + other mats (which may equal another silver or two).

I’d say if it’s 30s+ for the rare, sell it. If it’s less than that, salvage. My own personal system, and not calculated mathematically.

For me, it depends on how much you care about the game x how much time you are willing to devote.

i.e.
One can play a lot, but doesn’t really care if they get legendaries or if they win at WvW etc – Casual
One can play infrequently, and they care a lot. All they ever do is farm for their legendary or fight to be top of the charts – Casual
One can play infrequently and not really care – Very casual

One can play a lot and care a lot – Hardcore

Just going to chime in here on hardcore.

I don’t believe that extended play periods = hardcore. I’ve known casuals who played 12+ hours per day and have nothing to show for in game. While people in a hardcore guild may only spend very few hours in game per week and constantly have something to show for.

If anything, I see it as goal driven play style.

Hardcore: “I’d like to achieve x-y-z by Tuesday”.
Casual: “I’ll get there someday, no rush”.

I totally agree. I said that it is time AND how much you care. My 2nd example was lengthy playtimes but a casual player.

Start with Nightfall so you have heroes.

Was totally about to say this same thing! Beat me to the punch.

I’d recommend playing a healer, because the healing heroes and henchmen are not really adequate for some of the later content. With the game having fewer players, it will be even more difficult than it was years ago to get a healer. Also, Monks are the best!

Think you need to re-read his post. He definitely said you collect the items to kill the bosses and collect a heart.

Ah, rereading the post, it does appear that’s what he said

For future reference, punctuation helps a lot in breaking up phrases

Now, off to work and when I get back I can cool off doing World 1 again.

Are you referring my punctuation, or the original posters? I am all for improving my skills in writing, so please point out anything specific that you feel were missing proper punctuation.

PS: There already is a discrepancy between loot on Easy (infantile) Mode and Normal Mode. Do you disagree with this?

Do you feel that these players, who are working no harder than you are, deserve to get double the rewards for their efforts?

Yes.

I also believe that I would not be able to complete the hard mode. I am definitely not the best gamer out there – I consider myself of average skill level. Perfect for Normal Mode.

Also, if all you get is double baubles, and theoretically hard mode will take longer to complete, then there will be no real added bonus for doing hard mode.

This game does not want gear progression where you do things to get better gear to do other things (something I do not agree with, but have accepted). It has advertised as skill progression. This means you start out with easier content and work up your own actual skill to be able to complete harder material. That is great, but without an incentive to try harder material, people will naturally choose the easiest possible path to get what they want.

Why shouldn’t somebody be rewarded for having more skill?

Because then people with less skill are less rewarded. There are always people who want more and more challenge and want everything to be crazy hard. I have no problem with that, let people play how they most enjoy playing. What I do have a problem with is when that playstyle receives greater rewards, because people playing on hard mode because they enjoy it are already being rewarded by the fun they are having playing it the way they like. If that is not reward enough then they shouldn’t play in that mode. People who would prefer to play on normal mode should not feel pressured by the loot tables to play on harder modes just to get the most efficient loot gain.

I just really hate the attitude of "the existing modes are too easy, there should be a harder one that I would enjoy more. . . and also it should give me extra cookies for playing it because who would want a harder mode if they don’t get paid extra for doing it? If they add a hard mode, play it or not, don’t expect them to give you extra cookies for it.

1. Increase difficulty = increased rewards = motivation to improve.

2. Increase difficulty = equal rewards = motivation to not improve

That is a basic market economy concept. In combination with competition to have the best rewards is what the entire western society revolves around. One can argue that western society is not the best example to follow, but in my opinion it has proven itself to be the best option.

While I appreciate the cutesy clouds and terrible graphics are supposed to trigger a nostalgic response from me and make this new content fun, I can really only say 1 thing..

If I wanted to play a mario, I’d be playing mario.

I want to play Guild wars 2. Please spend your resources on content for that game.

Hey op if you don’t kitten-ing want to play it you don’t have to stop posting this kitten on the forums about resources it’s a holiday event that is new and interesting for people that love jumping puzzles people like you make A-NET not want to do anything new and fun because people criticize them so much for fun holiday events that they have. TLDR GTFO if you want to kitten about a holiday event it may relate to mario but it’s not to get the hell out of here

Like i said… no one is permitted to disagree with the jumping puzzles.

I can’t wait til I can play a game of sudoku for some weapon skins. That’d be ok right? Because sudoku is fun and how dare you question fun?!

One can disagree with Jumping Puzzles, just as much as they can disagree with everything. However, a valid response is if you do not like it, don’t do it. i.e. Do not like Dungeons? Don’t do them. Do not like PvP? Don’t do them. Don’t like Fractals? Don’t do them. However, if you have constructive criticism to improve any aspect, then please provide it.

I personally do not like sodoku, but if you do that’s great. If they added a soduku mini game that gave weapon skins, you would not hear me complaining.

Always with the negativity. I don’t think anyone asked for this content, but it seems that as per the usual the optimists are enjoying what they got (for free mind you) while the pessimists do what they do best. Also, this is not indicative of any “direction” that GW2 may or may not be headed. In my opinion this game is seriously lacking in the mini-game department anyways, with Keg Brawl being the only one I can think of offhand. Is adding a new mini-game and weapon skins really setting off alarms for a sudden change of direction in people’s heads?

The fact that it is nowhere near complete tells me that they were skeptical about SAB to begin with, which really is sad. Sad enough that it prompted me, someone who rarely posts here, to sign on and ask: What kind of community are we that the same company that gave us GW2 is hesitant to share some of their creativity with us? I have nothing but praise for A-Net, especially in these last couple of weeks. Keep on naively hoping for a perfect game developer and pardon me while I go back to enjoying my free and optional content.

Maybe because they finally thought they shouldn’t put this kind of nonsense in the game? And for all the times people have said to keep super mario bros out of gw, this is kind of like a giant middle finger to everyone who doesn’t like these jumping puzzles, on top of the middle finger of the jumping puzzle advertising itself to me all month long.

What?? The middle finger comment is utterly ridiculous. It’s not like they force you to play it.

I’ll tell you why it’s a middle finger, IMO.

I UNDERSTAND I’m not forced to play it. I get that part. I don’t really do dungeons either, but I don’t complain about those so much because they are part of what I’d EXPECT from an MMORPG.

I would EXPECT a new burger on the McDonalds menu, I expect stores to have sales, and I expect content updates to both pvp and pve, regardless of which I prefer.

I DID NOT expect jumping puzzles… but they’re there. That’s not a normal thing in MMOS, but whatever, they’re hidden. That’s fine. I don’t like them but whatever. HOWEVER, These things like the Mad Kings tower, the Christmas one and now this… they’re events that are centered around these jump puzzles. Yes I KNOW I don’t have to participate, and yes, I know there’s an “easy” mode in this one, but that’s besides the point. I want a holiday event that ISN’T focused around a jumping puzzle. Lots of people want something that ISN’T another jumping puzzle.

Yet this is the third holiday event that has new jumping content, as if that’s what holiday events permanently consist of, and i’m beginning to expect disappointment… over and over and over.

That is why it’s like a middle finger.

Then they add this easy mode which is dubbed infantile mode? How condecending. They didn’t call normal mode in GW1 “infantile mode”. It’s like a slap in the face for anyone who isn’t proficient at jumping puzzles.

This still does not make sense to me.

However, I will revise my analogies.

It would be like saying McDonalds is giving you the middle finger because they added a Salad to their menu and you don’t like salads. You do not expect salads at McDonalds, but they added it. How dare they?

As for your part about infantile mode, I suppose I can see how that can be insulting. I personally wasn’t insulted and considered the word infantile more to do with clouds and rainbows and less to do with people’s skill. I also suck at JP’s (I could not complete the Mad Kings Tower or the Christmas one). I did like how they added it though.

I can understand completely how you would not like this addition. I can even understand you not wanting devs to devote time to adding it. I do not understand how you can say they are raising a middle finger for adding content directed at an audience that doesn’t include you. It is a very selfish notion, and doesn’t make any sense. My own selfish side would rather them scrap WvWvW and stop developing updates around it; however, I understand there are plenty of people who enjoy this content and accept the updates surrounding it. I even welcomed the Time Warp nerf which hinders my main mesmer in PvE, because I could see how it would be OP in PvP.

It’s closer to Legend of Zelda than it is to Mario. In Mario, you got a star for killing bosses. In Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess, and many others, you collected “upgrades” such as bombs, boomerangs, lanterns, slingshots, bow and arrows, hookshot, magnet boots, gravity boots…etc so you could kill the boss and get a heart container (which gives you a whole extra heart life, just like in SAB).

You don’t get those upgrades from bosses in Zelda games recently, you get them to beat the bosses. Small difference? Not really. This trend started from Link to the Past and has continued onwards. “The item you found in the dungeon has a high chance of being required to proceed inside the dungeon itself.”

On the other hand, Mario rarely requires any upgrades to navigate the levels normally.
Super Mario Galaxy was the first game I recalled where I was required to get power ups to proceed.

Think you need to re-read his post. He definitely said you collect the items to kill the bosses and collect a heart.

He also said that in Mario you get stars for killing bosses, but did not suggest you need anything to kill them.

SAB definitely feels more like Zelda. You also have a pointy stick (sword?) that you kill baddies with, instead of jumping on them like Mario. However, I did want to jump on them!

im 30 and i dont like the new content. was hoping for a “normal” content update. this doenst fit into an fantasy mmo and i dont unterstand why we dont get any good content that stays interesting like fractals. it took time to devolope this stuff and for me its a waste of time. its lacking more and more…

However, it DOES fit into the lore/theme of the universe. Yes it is a fantasy based realm, but there is a race in that realm who has advanced technology. You could even consider that race to be somewhat more Sci-Fi than Fantasy. This race, of course, is the Asura. They have Gates for long distance travel, Golems (robots), waypoints and other advanced technology. They are also extremely goofy and competitive. Would you disagree that creating a game, such as the SAB, is outside the bounds of what the Asura would create? In my opinion, it fits in quite well.

In fact, it fits in much better than many other aspects of the game. For example, WvW makes no sense. We are literally fighting cross-dimensions Tyria 1 vs Tyria 2 vs Tyria 3. That is very sci fi and not very fantasy based. Guns are also out of place imo, but I have come to accept their presence.

I’ve finally realised why I can’t enjoy or begin to enjoy this game even though it’s amazing and is in my favorite genre.

I’m not the demographic at which they are aiming for.

With the “Super Box Adventure” commercial I realised GW2 is made for the 35 year old gamers, or gamers generally older than me in their late 20s to 30s, who love this nostalgic feeling of 8bit games and bad american commercials. I didn’t grow up with this so to me it’s just not something I can relate to on any level.

With no time constrains and content available to anyone at any skill level, they are aiming this game at ppl who have a wife and possibly kids, gamers who don’t have that much time in the day to actually play games in general, in another term casual players who don’t have all the hours in the day to play. That isn’t me i’m not a casual gamer, I have hours for college work (not uni), and games. I’m not constrain by casual hours.

I’m not looking for an arcade game or an adventure game to play, a 8 bit platformer or a platformer in general. I’m looking to play an mmorpg. Mini games are fun but when the bulk of my fun from the game is coming from mini games, i might aswell be playing a real adventure, platformer or arcade game than a water downed version of such in an MMORPG.

Interesting. I came to almost the opposite realization yesterday. I was gone for the long weekend and when I came back, I was not eagerly waiting to get back in the game. However, before that I was on almost every spare hour I had. The reason? Because I realized I had to reason. I was logging on before for Laurels and Dailies. Then, when I did not get a few, I realized I didn’t need them. I then checked out SAB and saw that you had to farm it over and over to get a skin. You can’t just log in for fun and get something cool.

Basically the style of play is either = log in for hours and hours and let it consume you, so that you can get Laurels/Legendaries/Super skins etc.. or you can log in casually and get nothing. (and by nothing i mean you can get a few laurels and a few baubles, but not enough to do anything with).

This game is too heavily focused on farming imo.

I still do love the game though, but perhaps not as much as I used to.

PS: I am 28.

What?? The middle finger comment is utterly ridiculous. It’s not like they force you to play it.

That’d be like saying any WvW only content addition would be a giant middle finger to PvE exclusive players.

That’d be like saying McDonalds adding a new burger to their menu is a middle finger to vegetarians.

That’d be like saying a store having a sale is a middle finger to people who prefer to buy used.

That really makes no sense.

@Ophidic, I consider myself a pessimist and your comment is mildly offensive :\ I do not ‘do what we do best’. I am very much enjoying the content. I am pessimistic that many of the new awesome additions will transfer into real gameplay (The giant toad boss fight is one of the best, if not the best, boss battle I’ve played in GW2).

Love the new content ANet. Keep it up!

Dear Anet,

Plz plz plz plz make moar big eye female charr. Certainly it can’t be an exact Roxx clone, but make the cute one big eyed.

Biiiiig. Roxx big. Maybe a little bigger. I hunger, and the forum angst regarding this non-issue will quench my appetite.

Please and thank you!

No but seriously, the most vocal people about this are folks using some hardcore furry terminology. That right there should tell you enough. It didn’t need to go there.

There’s nothing wrong with Roxx to most sane people. She’s legit. She’s a young charr with big cat eyes. Deal with it.

They could have made them even bigger and it would still be natural. As natural as huge horned bipedal hell cats come.

This forum <> logical, honesty, thinking

If they make a charr that looks exactly like photo #1. I will roll it.

Not a great idea for such a young MMO

Personally, I somewhat disagree. I love the evolution of the game. The fact that newcomers will not know the significance of Southsun Cove is kind of cool. They may come to us veterans to ask. I like that the world is slowly evolving before our eyes, so that it’s not the same stagnant game today as it was a month ago.

That said, I’d like to see massive content updates in addition to these smaller ones (not in place of them). I hope that ANet has something big up their sleeve that they can add with a large amount of permanent content. I’d be happy with large updates like this every 6-12 months and smaller living story updates monthly.

However, if I had to choose one over the other, I think I’d prefer spaced out significant large updates over living story.
