No this is not overly sensitive political correctedness.

It was an easy fix. Even if it was for PC reasons, the change was easy. An over the top reaction would be removing the buff, or something else which either a) takes a lot of dev time or b) has an impact on gameplay. This was neither.

I am sure it took ANet less time to change the name than it did for them to read this thread.

I’d be interested in WvW if:

-it wasn’t as repetitive
-there was a story
-there wasn’t any pvp
-it wasn’t a zerg fest

AKA, if there wasn’t actually a wvw component.

You are basically doing the equivalent of saying “I’d PVE if there were no monsters and I had to kill other players instead”

You could have just said “never, I don’t like pvp.”

That is what I said. Here I can do the same thing to your post.

You are basically doing the equivalent of saying “you are writing way too many points to get your point across.”

You could have just said “Less is more.”

Sorry, my point is that it is very unlikely to get me into WvW. I PvE because I like PvE and cooperative games. I do not like PvP.

Lore and story aren’t really the same. I prefer story to lore. Basically, story keeps me guessing what happens next. Lore is looking back at what happened before. For this reason, I like the Living Story aspect of this game.

Yeah, ok, no problem…

Is just that in a thread “What should this massive pvp mode have to appeal you” an answer “No pvp no zergs and a story instead” leaves baffled for a moment. :p

Fair enough It is how I felt at the title “PvE’ers, what would it take for you to PvP?”

-it wasn’t as repetitive

It’s long term PvP Endgame – also Pvp is inherently repetitive cause is the variety of opponents and their reactions to keep game alive

-there was a story

If you mean lore, there is. Uninteresting, but there is.

-there wasn’t any pvp

Wut.

-it wasn’t a zerg fest

It’s a well know issue, but as long as Anet doesn’t do anything this falls in the “deal with it” category, sadly.

Ugh… you know, there’s two people in this world…

People who will whine and complain until something gets done, and people who actually do something about the situation. People who don’t wait around for the world to mold to their liking.

Whining about a measly 5 achievement points? You guys know how ridiculous you sound? If you are not about the PvP life, stay out of WvW where zergs are EVERYWHERE. Sure its annoying to be JP griefed, i don’t approve of it, but it’s never going to change so you have to learn to adapt.

There are THOUSANDS of achievements, why would you complain about 1 achievement that’s worth 5 points? You either accept the challenge and ACHIEVE your ACHIEVEMENTS or just sit with thumbs up your butts complaining on the forums.

Just in reference. My complaints are unrelated to the achievement points. I like the jumping puzzle and wish I could actually go do it. However, everytime I go, I get ganked. It’s lame.

I wouldn’t even mind the PvP if it wasn’t designed so horribly. It encourages you to get attacked by a swarm. Perhaps if OS was created instanced with max 5 people per side. Then at least you could have some fair and interesting fights that happen while you are jumping.

As it is now, you go in and are merrily jumping along, and boom 20 guys are right behind you. Enjoy.

Is that fun for anyone? Maybe. I don’t understand why.

I understand your frustration with that, i hate when that happens to me too, but that happened even before the kite was added and is just more frequent to happen now that the kite is there. Getting ganked is part of the JP as much as getting ganked in WvW is part of WvW. Anet developed this JP to be different from the others, to have that PvP aspect to it, if you don’t like it, maybe do other Jump Puzzles? If you wanted everyone to be friendly in a zone where you can attack others, it isn’t going to happen.

Yup, that is what I do. I was also frustrated with this before the last two content patches. I also find it frustrating that you need to do WvW for map completion (although less so, I seem to be OK at hopping in and getting a SP or Vista every now and then).

It just bugs me that they added this JP to WvW with no PvE equivalent. It is easily my favourite in terms of design.

Just a note, I got both the Aetherblade Cache and the Kite at the end of OS for both the last content patches. Not being able to get them is not my concern.

I think they need to add the Halloween JP on top of SM, once players cap SM, finish the Halloween JP, where the players will meet Lupicus.
Once Lupicus is defeated, the entrance to Obsidian JP should open up, and finally once players get to the top of the puzzle, they can get to the kite.

As it stands now, Obsidian JP alone is super easy, please provide more challenging content.

No no no. You should fight lupicus while ascending the Mad Kings Clock Tower.

If they changed and were brought out every 3 months, would you quit?

Most likely, yes. As it is now, I tend to log on a bit less and less as the cycle nears its end.

Would you stop spending real money in game?

I will start spending real money in the game once there is something that I want to spend real money on. (Also, once I have a bit more disposable income).

Would you be so un happy?

As anyone who has something that is good and gets it taken away from them, I would be unhappy.

If you read the interviews about the LS the devs make it sound like without them the game would die. Is this true?

Who knows? I am sure the WvW crowd would not mind as much.

And another thought occurs, does their current schedule cause you to spend more real money in game, and play more?

Not really sure if this is really an extra question. I do not spend more on their current schedule, but yes I play more.

Just curious.. I truly think every 2 weeks is nuts and quality will suffer. Your thoughts?

They increased the development teams by 4 and decreased the frequency by 1/2. That means they have twice as much time to polish content before it is released. Therefore, I do not think quality will suffer.

Also, I would recommend that you post this in Players Helping Players or at least Discussion, as this doesn’t really have anything to do with Bazaar of the Four Winds.

Finally, I’d recommend that you make a more descriptive title/subject for the thread. “Asking for an explanation” is very vague. Perhaps “Clarify Store for Later Option on New Achievements” would make more sense?

On the other hand you ask for common courtesy in PvP? PvP is PvP, you go in n you might die. Simple as that.

Yes, common courtesy. As I said, just because they have the “Invader” name tag does not mean you have to be a kitten to them. About 2 weeks ago about 20 BG and SoR had an unofficial truce in OS as both sides helped friends and guildies through while fighting off the JQ campers at the top. JQ ended up camping the entrance so we had to stealth the last few stragglers past them, then left them again to their camping.

20min of not being under obligation to kill anything red and everyone got what they wanted.

Do you expect everyone to share the same thinking? In a PvP designed Jump puzzle, some may just go for the loot and achievements and avoid combat, but some find enjoyment in killing others. You go into the map fully knowing that everyone is hostile, don’t expect common courtesy when some enemies only see you as a loot bag.

Yo man, this is just a game. I imagine people PvP for fun, but that doesn’t mean they have to be disrespectful of other players.

Just because we cannot expect common courtesy, doesn’t mean that it’s right for people to not express it. That is just like in the real world, you can’t expect people to be decent human beings, but it doesn’t mean it’s right for people to be jerks.

the puzzle is extremely easy on any char if you utilize the perma stealth fountains located at 3 different places.
Achievements being equally distributed for all player types is the best way to go, which is exactly what anet is doing.

A lot of wvw players can cry about achievements only being put in open world but they don’t so quit crying every time an achievement is added for Wvw players.

This isn’t a WvW achievement though. This is a JP achievement in the midst of WvW.

It’d be like having a PvP achievement in the midst of a dungeon, it’s just weird.

What about the WvWer’s that don’t like PvE? Whatever your answer to that question is the answer to your own.

The people who do not like PvE will not mind that they cannot complete a PvE thing. I, however, love JPs. I don’t like PvP and I find it very frustrating that they have this PvE/JP in a PvP area. There is no way for me to ‘opt out’ of the PvP.

Imagine they had a PvP type event, say Dragonball. You went in to dragonball, and then camping at the beginning of it were 10 Veterans that instantly kill you. Would you feel that is very fun? No, you are there for PvP, not PvE, what the heck are the vets doing there?

The Effects of Living Story

1. Is the Living story causing more harm than good, within the guild wars 2 community?

- Difficult to say. Personally, I quit back in November and came back during Flame and Frost. Living Story is what keeps me interested in the game, as it is ever changing and thus never stale.

2. If you were/are joining the game now, does it put you off that you can never gain 100%?

- Not really. I am not a 100%er I guess though. I play the parts of the game that I find fun and leave out the parts I don’t. I have missed some things and it sucks, but it’s hardly a deal breaker. The benefits of the temporary content outweigh the negatives for me.

3. Do you feel that Living story should be permanently re-playable for the achievements?

- Not really

4. Do you give Living story a Thumbs up or a Thumbs down, and why?

- Thumbs up. Kind of said it above, but I find the living story makes the world feel more interesting, because there is a constant flux of fresh and interesting content. Instead of me just running the same dungeon over and over and over, I get to try out different things constantly.

I don’t mind trying to create a central post out of that thread with at-a-glance info.

I think one sticky thread in the Living Story sub-forum called something like “Start and End Dates” would work. It could be updated at each event with start and end dates for certain achievements.

PS: Aarean, you called ANet rude for not having this information, but IMO it is more rude to demand such things from ANet. It is also even more rude to tell people to go pound dirt just because they do not agree with you.

Jumping Puzzles and Mesmer portals

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jemmi.6058

Jemmi.6058

If I’m a mesmer and I’ve done all of the jumping puzzles, it’s my right to be able to portal other players who may not be as good as me at them.
Hell, some people can even charge for it, although that’s a red-rag to a bull with me. I’ll usually do the same jumping puzzle upon seeing someone do that then subvert them by offering free portals.

But this topic does gloss over one crucial fact, and I believe there may be a critical misunderstanding of how mesmer portals work amongst some elements of the community; specifically those who don’t have mesmers themselves.

Portals don’t make the jumping puzzles any easier for the mesmer doing them. True, they allow a do-over if the mesmer remembers to place portals at certain points, but generally we forget.
The mesmer has to do the jumping puzzle like everyone else. Portals do not allow them to bypass anything in jumping puzzles. You can’t place a portal ahead of yourself.
So a mesmer who has done a jumping puzzle has done it “properly”, of that you can rest assured.

If we weren’t allowed to use portals to help other people, I would be deprived of a lot of the fun I have with this game. I have a guild member who’s great fun to play with, but hopeless at jumping puzzles. I massively enjoy helping them through these things, and generally they’ll try their hardest before asking me for help.

And another thing.
Mesmers have a harder time than most in jumping puzzles.
Mesmers have no access to stability for example, so Goemm’s Lab can be a challenge, as can other puzzles with environmental hazards.
Our access to swiftness is not as easy as with other classes, so in general we’ll do all jumps with no speed boosts. And I know I do, as they have all been designed to be done without swiftness. A lot of players don’t even realise this, thinking that swiftness is mandatory for certain puzzles.

So next time you look to complain about portals making jumping puzzles trivial, roll a mesmer and do every jumping puzzle in the game.
Then message me and ask me to portal you past the one you get stuck on.

Although I almost entirely agree with you, I wanted to clarify one thing. We (mesmers) do have access to stability. Mantra of um Concentration? I think it’s called. Gives 2x 2 second stability. It actually works quite well in Goemms Lab

Possibly. I thought this was worthy of discussion, and since there was no “PvE Forum”, I went with the rough equivalent of “general discussion” here… But if some moderator thinks it’s more appropriate there, by all means.

Also it seems the filter messed up some of my text… If you see “Kitten” somewhere in the text, it’s probably nothing “dirty”, just stupid overreacting by the filter, such as “is” followed by “hit”… Honestly that was a huge post and I can’t be bothered going over every little line again right now to make sure it doesn’t conflict with the kittening (no, it’s working right on this one) arbitrary filter. Maybe a bit later.

The bond between races has only been strengthened more and more since the game’s launch, and I fail to see that bond weakening anytime soon.

That’ll continue to make stories that no one cares about.

Go watch Game of Thrones and ask yourself why that show is watched by over 5 million people.

From Wikipedia, the most watched shows are MASH, Cheers and Seinfeld with 125, 84 and 76 million viewers each (Game of Thrones is 141st on the list). Now, I don’t know these shows very well, but I get the impression that none of them have the same faction-like tension that you are suggesting.

Note: I do love Game of Thrones TV Show and book; however, one major difference between Game of Thrones and what you are suggesting is that the tensions and struggles are actually believable given the course of the story.

How can you compare viewership to shows that have run for a different length of time…

Viewership is based on an episode, not a total.

EDIT: To clarify, these are Season/Series finale numbers and not the highest viewed episode of the series. For example, Lost series finale had 13.6 Million viewers and there were 23.47 million viewers on the season 2 premiere. That said, no episode of Game of Thrones has come near 125 million viewers.

As for advertised pre-launch, I was sold on this game long before any of those were advertised. Each time they came out and added a point against them (particularly about the no healer), I was crushed. It wasn’t enough to write off the game completely, but it was enough to disappoint.

Everyone post +1 for those who want to leave portal alone, and -1 if they want it nerfed. Some numbers might clarify what real feelings are. Please no double-posting, we know who you are

Do you mean on the forums? I imagine only a small fraction of actual players actively navigate and participate on the forums. Only a poll in game would get realistic and usable results. However, I doubt that ANet would do this.

The characters in the Living Story are dealing with small matters. It’s like being in a boring meeting talking why the stock market dipped 2% yesterday.

This much I greatly disagree with.

We’ve dealt with a bunch of terrorists invading charr and norn lands and causing refugees to flee. We end that by escorting the living story characters through a giant and dangerous mine where the terrorists are hiding out to plant a bomb and end it.

We’ve dealt with taking care of an assassin at Southsun.

We’ve dealt with a murder investigation.

We’ve dealt with protecting a city from pirates.

Unless you think that terrorists, murderers, assassins and pirates are small matters?

I really shouldn’t add to this discussion but I’m bored and there is a lot of ignorance about portal that needs to be cleared. There are a LOT of restrictions on this skill, which is why I find it ludicrous to ask for more.

-snip-

Crossplay, may I add to your lists 2 more restrictions that I learned about the hard way.

8. Portals cannot be used underwater.
There was this time I activated the entrance portal just to look down and see there wasn’t a tiny bit of land that my friends to swim to so i could jump down and create the exit to port them up

9. The first (entrance) portal expires (and the skill goes on CD) if the mesmer dies before they make the second (exit) one.
There were occasions as I rushed to my friends’ position, misjudged the height and jumped to my death, even if I got ressed in 1 second after, there’s no use creating the exit portal end.

Seriously, people who are against portals, try playing a mesmer than you’ll see that sometimes, figuring out where to put portals could be a bit of puzzle itself.

Portals can be used underwater, I did it yesterday. At least the exit portal.

CoF Inflation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jemmi.6058

Jemmi.6058

Personally, I think the best way to tackle this is to come up with a formula for calculating reward at the end of a dungeon that adequately rewards time and skill spent.

Reward = (Time * Kills) / (Deaths+1)
i.e. speedrun in CoF
Reward = (360 seconds * 10 kills) / (0 deaths + 1) = 3600 copper = 36 silver -

i.e. 2 hour Arah run with some deaths
Reward = (7200 seconds * 40 kills) / (4 deaths + 1) = 5760 copper = 57.6 silver

i.e. Arah speedrun
Reward = (1080 seconds * 10 kills) / (0 deaths +1) = 10800 copper = 1.08 gold

Anyway, these can obviously be adjusted for balancing reasons. The main point is that if you do a longer dungeon and/or kill more, you get more reward. If you die more, you get less reward.

End of the day: If you did 5x speed runs of CoF for 36 minutes or 2x speed runs of Arah for 36 minutes and killed the same amount, you would get roughly the same reward.

OK, but the point that others are making is that you can have content
A+B+C where people who play a lot can play all of it, people who can’t will play A+B, or B+C, or A+C or any of the 3.

Alternatively, you can have content
A+C and skip B entirely. Now everyone can enjoy A+C content, but B never existed. Why not have B available for those who can play more??

Getting mad at ANet for having temp content that you cannot log in to on your personal time is like getting mad at a sports team for having a game when you are otherwise occupied. So you miss something, no big deal, just enjoy the rest of that you have time to experience.

No it’s not. Those are entirely two different things. First off, the sports is not something you yourself play. You watch it. People are upset because there’s a huge list of achievements and content they won’t get to experience and not getting anything of substance to make up for it.

Sports is a form of entertainment that you can enjoy and that you can miss. That is the similarity.

If you want something exactly like this, you won’t find it.

It’s 100% fine the way it is, and if you miss something too bad. I am going to miss something later this month when I go home for my sisters wedding. You won’t hear me crying about it like a spoiled little 5 year old.

The problem is that’s becoming the entire game. So once you’ve beaten the original content, the two week long content is all that remains. That is, until ArenaNet can make up their mind which content stays and goes. They seem to be unable to do that. I get that their trying a new method of delivery, and that’s fine. I’m fine with the living story concept, but it needs to be more than glorified dailies and achievement chasing.

This much I can agree with Destai. IMO, in every update there has been at least 1 thing that I enjoy, and usually several other that I don’t. I particularly don’t like things like moa racing, pinata smashing and so on.

The two week content is all that remains, and that is why I like the faster release schedule, as it gives me something to do when I log in. I also like that a lot of it is temporary, because it really gives the world a real feel. I do not necessary like that I miss something, but I like that I can miss something – if that makes sense? I missed the big karka event in November, and will never be able to get that back. However, I’ve made it to most of the events since, and so I am still having a blast.

Level cap: if increased, what are the impacts?

80 is far too many levels. Far more than are necessary. In fact, I think levels altogether are an antiquated system that should stay in WoW and D&D where they belong. I’d so much rather see skill-based character progression than simple, stupid XP accumulation for levels (there are games out there like this – and one notable one I can think of is 10 years old…so it can be done, and done well).

I almost didn’t buy GW2 when I found out that the level cap at launch is 80. Seriously? What a no-brainer way to play. And at launch! It didn’t even have to take years and several xpacs to get it to 80!

Increase in level cap = I permanently go play something else. So that is the impact, as far as I am concerned.

Fair enough, but on the other side of the coin, I have actually stayed away from other MMO’s that have gone and done away with the traditional levelling system. I tried them and got bored. To each their own.

Guild Wars 1 had Level 20.
People had fun in GW1 for 4 entire campaigns without level cap being increased.
What’s up with people so addicted to exponential stat growth?

Key factors that differentiate GW1 and GW2 which is why level cap increases make more sense, or why they made sense to stay the same in GW1:

- GW 1 had skill progression, where you purchased and captured new skills as you progressed through the campaign. In GW2 you unlock all of your skills on your own.

- GW 1 campaigns were more story mission based, and you were paced through the story. GW 2 is more open world based, so there is less to slow down your pace

- GW 1 attribute system did not work nearly the same way GW 2 trait systems does. Opening up more levels can really change the way people play and open up new builds.

Raising level caps is not necessary in either game, but raising level caps can be fun. Ultimately, that is why I want it. It won’t negate older content, because you are downleveled. It will be fun, because you (or at least I) gain a sense of satisfaction when you level. It will be fun, because it will open up new builds and ways of playing the game. It will be fun, because it will open up new maps and dungeons aimed at the new level. It will be fun, because it will give you a new short term goal.

Again, many of these things can be achieved through other means, and that is fine. However, most things can be achieved through multiple means, and that is not reason enough alone to negate it.

New puzzle is in Kryta, not Ascalon. Maybe that is the problem?

Mesmer portal: a Liscence to Steal

The new jumping puzzle has just been released, and once again we see that there is no content that this skill can’t break. A few greedy people decided to create toons for the sole purpose of porting to the chest and caching in on a fast 60 silver. Since this could be repeated fairly quickly, a tidy profit could be made. Anet was quick to respond by nerfing the value of the exotic shoulder item, to the detriment of all the honest players. They didn’t nerf it enough though, as players can still collect the exotic shoulders and throw them in the mystic forge to get a random exotic armour piece.

I don’t get it. Find a way to kill a dungeon boss by bypassing his attacks and you risk being banned for exploiting. How is the rabid abuse of the portal different?

Just a note, the exploiting offense here is that people are deleting/remaking characters and going to the JP. The portal may make this a bit easier, but isn’t the root core of the problem. People could just make a new char and run the Jumping Puzzle and get the 60s, delete and do again.

Relax

The really cool thing about GW2 is that you don’t have to finish all the content to “progress”. No pressure, no guilt – just do what you enjoy doing, go for the stuff you want, play what you want to play and have fun

Disagree.

New Content comes out.
Choice between World Completion and New Content.

If I dont do the New Content, I miss out on skins that will be gone forever, weapons/armors/accessories with stats that I will have to pay a fortune(see Sentinel’s 26g apiece and rising or Scythe Staff skin) to get later if I do not do it now, and most importantly, I miss out on the content itself because it will be gone.

If I do the Content, then I dont have time to do World Completion.

So,
1. Extremely Pressured to do the New Content because it will be gone soon.
2. Extremely Guilty that I missed one-time-only items(I was in the plane for 20 hours +8hours transit time +12hours timezone difference during that weekend with the fireworks and never got the Dragon Helmets…and now never will be able to. Sadly, I wanted the Dragon Helmets)
3. Extremely Unhappy to pay a fortune to get specific stats/skins because of missed event/rng boxed skins(and that’s provided said item is even available on TP in the first place).

NOT Cool

I’d just like to point out that if they didn’t release the content, then you also would not be able to get the skins.

Yes, they don’t. It’s just your example covers something that is a need rather than a want. Most people need welfare to support themselves. As far as helping people in the game: you can give them pointers, show them how to do the puzzle, or rez them when they fall.

The previous analogies that were picked apart in this thread that you rose up against had similar major conflicts.

However, if you want a more similar analogy then, how about this. You buy a gift for a friend. They don’t necessarily deserve the gift, but you got it for them because you wanted to. Is it wrong to buy them a gift? Is it wrong for them to accept the gift?

Your example also doesn’t exactly go with the issue at hand considering welfare and such helps with needs, not wants. People don’t need to get to the end of the jumping puzzle they want to. Before someone comes on and stated that nobody needs to play the game, all I have to say is that is not a real argument.

I agree, but I thought the analogies didn’t need to line up 100%?

Anyway, my point is that I like to throw up portals to help people. They like to be helped. I do not really see the problem. Not everything in life needs to be earned, sometimes it is OK to accept help from others and sometimes it is OK to help others. It doesn’t mean they don’t deserve it.
