The 3 Types of Villains.

in Living World

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

I would add Faolain to the list of type 3 villains as well. She believes she is championing the true meaning of being sylvari by rejecting all the human- and Ventari-inspired morality. By rejecting common morality, she comes off as a monstrous villain to us, but she still believes she is doing the right thing. (Although there are some type 1 villainy traits in her, to the extent that the Nightmare Court sometimes appears to act from blind fervor.)

Faolain and Scarlet are not so different at all, except of course that Scarlet is insane to the point of psychosis, while Faolain seems far more rational in her cruelty, with an obsession with Caithe appearing to be her only genuine mental instability.

Interestingly, if you look at the dredge, they could (as a group) also count as type 3 villains. They have a strong ideology of freedom fighting, and ending the oppression of their people by the dwarves (and by extension, all the other races that once associated with dwarves).

To add a few more villains to the list:

- Gaheron Baelfire: Type 2.
- Kudu: Type 2 (although the Inquest have the potential to produce type 3 villains)
- Mai Trin: Type 2.
- Caudecus: Type 2.

The Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum Doubloons are rare crafting materials (and item upgrades) that have recently had their functionality changed. Where they first gave Magic Find %, they now give Boon Duration %.

However, even with this change, there is still no collectible bank tab for these items, even though all other rare crafting materials did receive this.

Why is this? Are Doubloons not considered crafting materials, like Jewels, Sigils, Runes and Crests? But all gemstone-type jeweling materials are considered crafting materials, and are collectible. Therefore, I believe this is an oversight, and one that has not yet been caught after many months.

My request is simple. Please add collectible bank tabs for the four tiers of Doubloons.

Thank you.

I have never had a precursor drop for me, and I’m not complaining. I will get my Legendary at some point, though. I haven’t even really started down that path yet.

By the way, OP, ArenaNet is aware that precursors can be hard to get, and have been bouncing ideas around for ways to give players better access to them. There was talk about a scavenger hunt, or even the possibility to craft them, but none of it has resulted in anything being added to the game. Yet.
Still, world bosses (Tequatl, Orr temples, Claw of Jormag, etc.) and even the new Champion loot bags have a (minuscule) chance to contain Exotics, and thus Precursors. The statistical chance to find one has already gone up (a little) since launch.

The point about Legendary weapons, though, is that they are HARD to obtain. So NEVER expect that Precursor to just fall in your lap. Just like if you buy a single lottery ticket, you should not expect that it will make you a millionaire. It may happen, but you need to work to improve your chances. Getting the Precursor is NOT any easier than any of the other 3 things to transmute in the Mystic Forge.

Oh, and in response to the original question: No, I will not give money.

Lots of Possible Combos, SO HARD to choose

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

I try to keep a complete set of weapons on each of my characters, and I prioritize upgrading them based on how often I play each weapon. (My warrior is not level 80 yet, but I foresee some heavy spending there in the future.)

The reason I do this, is because each weapon offers situational advantages. I will give the elementalist as an example, as that is the one I play most often.

- On my elementalist, I like playing PvE solo. For this, I usually use Dagger/Dagger due to its short-range burst damage and mobility.
- When I play in groups with lots of melee-ers (dungeons/fractals/WvW tower defense), I tend to switch to Staff due to its ability to lay down many combo fields for my allies to trigger.
- Against single opponents of Champion or Legendary rank, I like to play Scepter/Dagger, because I prefer to keep my distance from those. This was also my favourite weapon set while leveling up to 60.
- Finally, I like to use Scepter/Focus in specific situations where the Focus skills really shine (the Harpy/Uncategorized Fractal, the Solid Ocean Fractal, or certain Gauntlet battles).
- The combination Dagger/Focus is one I have never used, though.
- I don’t do PvP

So even though the elementalist is unable to swap weapons during combat, I still like to mix up my weapon set for variety and effectiveness. So my advice to you is to try out all weapons extensively, learn for what situations each would be a good choice, and pick two or three combinations that you like. Meanwhile, don’t forget about your other weapon options, and always be ready to take out that Warhorn, Sword, Longbow, Scepter or Mace for when your Greatsword is not cutting it.

Are Our Characters Suddenly Mute?

I think the cause is cost-based. Any line spoken by the player character needs to be voice ten times (5 races x 2 genders). And it is unclear to me whether all ten of the voice actors are even available, since there has been NO addition of player voicing AT ALL since the launch date.

Having said that, I would love more player character voice work, as I am especially fond of the sound of my main character’s voice (male sylvari).

This is partially true. It’s very expensive to voice the player since it costs 10x (or more in some cases, since some actors are paid above scale depending on ability, availability, etc.) for each line recorded. We also have moved away from using cinematic conversations (the two-shot close ups) which were the primary delivery system of PC VO. Outside of the painterly cinematics and PC chatter (the stuff that’s automatically triggered when you’re low on health, suffering from conditions, leveling up, etc.) we don’t have proper control of triggering PC lines. It’s a technical issue that’s partly tied to having multiple PCs in a party.

So, while we can certainly solve these technical hurdles in the future we currently don’t have support for PC lines outside of the conditions listed above. And considering the fact that PC lines are shared across all races and genders, it doesn’t leave a lot of flexibility for making each PC talk differently. We are considering other ways to let players express themselves in the game through choice (actions, unspoken conversations, etc.), though those discussions are ongoing. Will the player speak in the future? Probably, but how and where are still under debate.

Let me just chime in and add that I have no problems with the Personal Story cinematic style in principle. In fact, I love the animation quality, and I sorely miss the focus on characters’ and NPCs’ body language and facial expressions in the new “panning cinematics”. In my opinion, the Living Story cinematics need both more close-ups on speaking characters, and more utilization of the subtle character animation technologies developed in the Personal Story cinematics.

Therefore, I hope that any future Personal Story (involving other Elder Dragons) will use a decent mix or an amalgamation of the two cinematic styles, and that it will also allow for more voicing of player characters.

If you want to deal out damage, do not disregard your Power. You need to either put 20-30 trait points in the power line, or wear +power equipment in nearly all your equipment slots. Doing both is also an option.

Consider the “For Great Justice” shout for one of your utility slots, because it grants might and fury to yourself and allies, which also profits significantly from your boon duration.

Other ways to gain experience are:

- Buy gathering tools and gather materials from all nodes you encounter (ore, saplings, edible plants). These are used as ingredients in crafting.

- Learn a craft or two and start developing it. This gives a significant boost to your regular character level. Crafts can be learned at the crafting stations either in any city, and in some other places, including the southwest corner of Queensdale.

- Revive other players and NPCs when they are downed.

- Explore city areas (Divinity’s Reach and Lion’s Arch are the easiest to access), discovering all waypoints and points of interest, and viewing all vistas there. Not only does this give experience, but you will receive a small boost if you complete it.
After you attain level 15, you can also complete Queensdale in the same way for a larger reward.

- Have you completed your personal story up to the point where it is on par with your current level? The number in parentheses behind the story goal in the top-right corner indicates the recommended level you should be for that story step.

- As mentioned above, participate in any and all dynamic events that happen to be running while you wander the countryside. These give good experience rewards, as well as karma and coin.
A special mention here is the balloons added to nearly all world areas for the Queen’s Jubilee event. These each start a dynamic event every 2-3 minutes.

- Try World versus World (WvW) if you are into PvP. You will be upscaled to level 80 (without all the perks like utility skills and traits). By running in the large gaggle of players running around the map like lemmings, you will earn a lot of kill credits, and experience points.

- Check you achievement tab, and see if you can complete a set of daily achievements. Typically, the things you are required to do for these already give experience, but completing the achievement gives extra experience as well.

The defensive abilities of Thieves almost exclusively rely on dodging and skills that provide evades. If your friend does not have a good grasp for dodging and battlefield mobility, Thief is probably one of the worst choices for him. (Especially if he likes to pick offensive stats on his traits and equipment over defensive ones.)

I would recommend Guardian for him, or possibly Elementalist (but that is another can of worms entirely), as these professions have fewer evade-skills, and more invulnerability-skills for defense (depending on weapon choice).

Still, your friend needs to learn how to use the dodge effectively, and which enemy attacks to avoid (and which attacks to simply take). Without that, he is likely to go down more often than he would like.

One thing to keep in mind is that content marked with a yellow star (bookmarked on the top-right of your screen, but also some NPCs that are marked on your map) is the so-called Living Story content, which is the current two-week-long event. Some of it is temporary, some of it is permanent. Feel free to ignore it, or jump right into it. (There has just been a new release this past Tuesday, involving hot air balloons and Divinity’s Reach.)

If you are not level 80 yet (and I see you say you have a level 28 character), I would advise you to just find a suitable explorable area and work your way through that, and continue with your personal story. (You can read back what the story so far has been by pressing H, and finding the “My Story” tab.) This should refamiliarize you with your character and what it can do.

Or you could just decide to start fresh, and make a new character from level 1. In that case, I would recommend choosing a different race and profession from your former main character, for the full fresh experience.

Regarding weapon choice (regardless of profession), I can give you this piece of advice:

Try them all!

If you get a little familiarity with each of the weapons available to your profession, you will find that each weapon has its own unique characteristics compared to the others, and some of them are bound to interest you more than the rest. Each weapon has its own use for the profession, but you are free to choose the weapons that suit your playstyle best. (And there is no single “right” weapon for any profession.)

By level 8, you will unlock your weapon swap option, which allows you to have two weapon sets equipped and freely switch back forth between them (on a small cooldown).

(Finally, don’t forget that underwater weapons have their own set of weapon skills.)

Please bear in mind that there is no dedicated “healer” profession in this game. Each character has a healing skill slot that can be used for self-healing, and your profession may or may not have some other skills that also provide significant healing to yourself and/or others.

The same goes for “damage” and “tank” professions. While some professions are better at some tasks than others, ALL professions can fulfill every role within a party to some degree, depending on your build.

If you don’t want to die in combat, make sure not to get hit. Dodging is a general mechanic that is important to learn, regardless of profession. Dodging devastating attacks at the right time is far more effective in staying alive than having an extremely high Toughness/Defense/Armor score.

Finally, there are no linear quests, except the personal story. All the explorable zones in the game are meant to be explored, meaning that you can wander around and participate in the events that come your way. Completing all challenges in a map area offers significant rewards.

Have fun.

In answer to your question 2 (in the first post):

If you explore a city for 100%, you only get a very small reward. That’s because there are no enemies inside cities.
An explorable zone will always give 2 good quality items (depending on the level of the zone), about 40 crafting materials, some coin and a gem shop item.

State of the game

Jornophelanthas.1475

Who is this “History”? I am in this game for fun, and I spend most of my time in explorable zones.

My reasons?
- It is generally easier to do daily achievements in one or two explorable areas.
- It does not have a minimum time requirement to achieve anything.
- I like to play solo.
- Crafting ingredients found in level 45-70 areas tend to be in short supply and high demand.
- Variety.

Having said that, here is an update on the state of the game:
- Everything that was there on release is still around. A new area, Southsun Cove, was added in November.
- Fractals of the Mists was added in November. It is a set of repeatable mini-dungeons with relatively good rewards.
- Daily and monthly achievements were streamlined and now award laurels, which can be spent at the laurel vendor in every major city.
- Guilds can now upgrade to start guild missions (in the open world). While anyone can participate in guild missions, the special rewards are only available to members of the guild that started it.
- Ascended trinket gear (pink) was introduced. You can acquire these in the following ways:
Amulets – laurel vendor
Rings – Fractals (cheaper) or laurel vendor
Accessories/Earrings – guild missions (cheaper) or laurel vendor
Back items – fractals and/or mystic forge
Most ascended items are also available in WvWvW, costing a combination of laurels and badges of honor.
- WvWvW now has a separate experience system where you can build up some passive WvW-only bonuses based on your deeds there.
- Many skills and traits were revised, rebalanced or debugged.

The reason you are posting is more because you have a question you would like answered, than because you want to share your (positive) attitude towards the game with the world.

Do not try to play the Personal Story to the exclusion of everything else.

You are expected to explore the (starting) zone, complete heart quests and participate in dynamic events in order to gain experience. Once you have leveled up to the point where you are close to the recommended level for the next step in your Personal Story, you should do that story step. And then it’s back to exploring.

Note that nearly everything gives experience:
- Killing random monsters;
- Uncovering new parts of the map (including waypoints, points of interest and vistas;
- Participating in dynamic events;
- Doing heart quests;
- Reviving other players and NPCs when they are downed;
- Gathering crafting materials (make sure to have a sickle, logging axe and mining pick on you!);
- Crafting and making crafting discoveries (you can have up to 2 crafts at a time);
- And yes, completing a step in your Personal Story also gives good experience;
- Playing World versus World (one of the PvP formats) is also a popular way to gain experience (although I would not recommend it below level 20).

Find out how you like to play the game, and level up your character in a way that you enjoy. Level progression is intended to be linear, i.e. the time it takes to go from level 2 to 3 should not be significantly shorter or longer than the time it takes to level from 79 to 80.

A dagger/dagger elementalist is also a rather versatile melee fighter. If you stat for toughness, it will also give you enough staying power to last through longer fights. Signet of Restoration provides passive heals. Consider a signet/aura build with the trait that grants 3 seconds of protection whenever you receive an aura, and look into the various defensive utility skills.

Beware, though, because it is a playstyle that can be challenging to learn.

The Return of Cut Scenes

Jornophelanthas.1475

I like the cutscenes. However, I do have a few suggestions:

1. My character does not participate in the cutscenes, and instead only watches passively. Suddenly, I feel as if my character has been rendered mute.

2. The character animations in the dialogue cutscenes are beautiful, and even if the same animations are used in the more “dynamic” cutscenes, they are barely noticeable. This is a shame.

3. All those animations and lines of voice-over seem wasted if they are not replayable once the event ends. (It has been stated that replayability will end once Flame & Frost ends.) This double goes for the personal story cutscenes.
Even if it is not feasible to replay the personal story instances, would it be possible to at least replay the dialogue cutscenes? For example, by adding a replay button in the personal story log on the Hero Screen.

4. For that matter, would it be possible to create a similar story log for the Living Story entries? (Including a way to replay the cutscenes.)

The long story short is without damage meters or damage measuring tools there’s virtually no way to determine what play style or even spec is more effective. Even the combat log doesn’t measure conditions.

I would go further and add that any damage measuring tools are inherently inaccurate due to the combo system.

If the warriors, rangers and thieves deal 25% extra damage as a result of a 25-stack weakness on the enemy, the staff elementalist who put down the lightning combo field does not receive the credit.

If the warriors, rangers and thieves deal I-don’t-know-how-much extra damage because they each have 10-15 might stacks, the scepter-dagger elementalist who put down the fire combo field AND the 5 blast finishers does not receive the credit.

I like the engineer because the weapon kits and toolbelt skills provide skill variety that reminds me of attunements, and many of the other utility skills (especially gadgets) provide the character with a modicum of (useful) wackiness.

If the complex playstyle of the elementalist is your benchmark, then many of the other classes will seem boring or monotonous by comparison. That is certainly my impression with the warrior, thief and ranger I have also played. I am yet to try guardian, necromancer and mesmer, though, and especially the mesmer seems promising.

Guild bounties - bounty hunt time

@ Jornophelanthas.1475
Have you even tried them? Because there are a lot of guilds who are small that are running these. There are answer to your problems and i posted them if your unwilling to try them out then there is no point in talking with you because its like talking into a wall.
Tell me what is your guild that your in? Size activeness etc..

No, I have not tried guild missions yet. However, my guild is saving up influence to unlock the Art of War tree, and we intend to at least try them when we can. The training bounties are likely to help with the influence threshold.

My guild is located on Gandara (EU). We all share the Dutch language, and I am an officer in the guild. The core of the members is made up of our group of friends, with some further non-shared acquaintances added in for good measure. Currently, we have about 10 members, 3 of which are actually active these days (including the guild leader). Some of the others will intermittently log in, are are only active while I am not looking.

As mentioned before, I am quite willing to try out the new guild content, and so are my fellow (active) guildmates. By the time we are able to actually try a training bounty or two, we will likely recruit for temporary (duration of the mission only) additional members in open chat. By the time we are able to start a “real” guild mission, we will likely do the same, and perhaps even ask participants for tips on a successful run. It remains to be seen how many players will be needed for a tier 1 bounty.

Hopefully, there will be players around who like access to this guild content, but do not want to become a permanent member of a guild of strangers.

As you can see, we are trying to make the most out of the current situation. I fully acknowledge that ArenaNet should not throw all rewards for free into the lap of a 3-person guild. However, if a guild is able to do dungeons or fractals together (i.e. if a guild can field 5-player parties to play together), why would guild missions be out of their reach?

@Jski:
“Work with other guilds” how? Co-operation between players is supported, but co-operation at guild level is not. There are no alliances.

“Add more people” how? If people looking for guilds can choose between Guild X with Guild Challenges and Guild Puzzles unlocked, and my guild, who can only do Bounties, where do you think they will go?

Well you can do it 2 times they only take 15 to 7 mins kind of you scratch my back i scratch yours idea. Its a bit inconvenient but its far from being imposable.

Well if you only have 5 ppl showing up to do guild events a higher wanted events i think its time to stop being so inclusive to other ppl they would like to join guilds too.

I already posted something in a different thread that can serve as an answer to this.

As a mechanism to help small guilds meet the Influence threshold to unlock the other guild mission content, Training Bounties will absolutely work. All you need is about 5 members who are dedicated to developing the guild further.

However, Training Bounties do NOT help small guilds in their ability to actually complete “real” Guild Bounties (and earn Guild Merits and Guild Commendations) with a relatively small number of members.

There could be a workaround, however. My small guild of 3 active players (who are real life friends) is considering unlocking Guild Bounties, and to fill out our numbers temporarily by recruiting players who are primarily interested in the rewards. These players would be temporary members for the duration of the mission only.
(Granted, an alliance system with several small guilds banding together would be far more elegant and potentially better organized.)

Added for clarity:
The players who are to be recruited would be those who do NOT want to make a commitment to any guild (due to playstyle preference), but who WOULD like to play the guild content.

@Jski:

You should visit Historian Vermoth, the karma vendor who is available whenever the Temple of Dwayna (in Malchor’s Leap) is uncontested. He sells Rabid accessories, rings, amulets and backpieces.
Some of the armor pieces he sells (but not all!) also have the Rabid stats.

Link to his vendor list:

(Note: You need to buy this with karma. The items are soulbound upon acquire.)

Official reply from Anthony Ordon on the concerns raised in this thread (and its predecessors that were merged into it):

The short version: Yes, they did read it all.

@Anthony Ordon:
Did you see the post linked below, referring to the February 26 patch?

I’ve read every post in that thread, yes. Please stop trying to fling it towards my face. I share some of the concerns, but I don’t agree with everything every player says.

The new guild training mission is meant to alleviate accessibility issues for smaller guilds. We’ll continue to look at methods of making sure that everyone can access the content and has the necessary tools available to complete it, but I don’t believe that down-scaling the challenges to accommodate for one-person at a time is the right solution for group content.

Thank you for acknowledging the concerns raised. If you say that you will continue to monitor whether everyone (every guild?) will have the necessary tools available to complete the new guild content, I have faith that the interests of guilds who cannot field more than a full 5-player party (but would still like to have access to Guild Merits and Guild Commendations) will not be forgotten.

I think you should mention this in the Game Bugs forum, rather than here.
(https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs)

ArenaNet checks that forum to investigate reported bugs, and the players who know whether any given bug has already been reported to ArenaNet (and been given an official response) can also be found there.

I am quoting the following from another thread (the full link is in my post above). The highlighted parts are most relevant to this discussion.

Point (5) should address ZudetGambeous’s position.

Point (6) is an issue that the Training Bounties do NOT address.

Core problems:
(1) This mechanic has created a disparity between large and small guilds.
(2) This disparity is that large guilds have better, faster, easier access to large content.
(3) The consequence of the disparity is that there is extreme pressure on small guild players to leave their small guilds and join larger guilds.
(4) The practical effect of this disparity is that it creates an unfair and unfun tension within small guild players: they must either sacrifice their friends, their guild, or their ability to enjoy content as first-class players. (Options: (1) Have the entire guild merge into a larger guild, the small guild dies and the special relationships they have are diluted in the big guild, assuming they are all folded into one and can find one that suits their taste, culture, habits, language, environment… this can be a destructive process. (2) Splinter and join large guilds separately, losing the friendships. (3) Endure as a small guild with unequal access to content.)
(5) Players in large guilds, whose incentive maximizations are already satisfied, do not have this problem. They both do not have any incentive or structural reasons to understand why small guild players are “whining”, “qqing”, etc, and do not see any reason that the current system is wrong.
(6) It is uncertain that small guilds will even be able to complete their guild missions at all under any circumstances, or if so, that they will only be able to do so under reduced circumstances, effectively meaning small guilds are barred from guild content, or that small guilds are not legitimate/acceptable under ANet policy. If this is the case, it is EXTREMELY offensive to small guild players, like myself, who believe that our guilds while small are just as legitimate as large guilds.
(7) All of the above are destructive to many guilds and communities. In effect, this patch has done harm to the community that it sought to promote friendship and playing together within. It has had the opposite effect for many players.

just did our first bounty in my smaller guild with ~8 people doing it, didn’t find either target, extremely discouraging after taking so long to even unlock it

Next time, stock up on multiple Bounty Missions first, so that you can start up multiple attempts in short succession.

Like every new content, guild missions have a learning curve.

I hope Anthony Ordon still reads this thread.

Please read the following post by a player named Matipzieu Kya, from the day after the February content update:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Guild-Missions-merged/page/14#post1522077

He/she identifies two main problems:

Problem One: This Mechanic Has Created Unfair-Feeling “Classes” of Guilds

Problem 2: Can small guilds even meaningfully DO the content?

Unfortunately, the Training Bounties do nothing to address the second problem, because these will not give out any of the rewards given for the “real” Guild Missions, and a Tier 1 Bounty is still out of reach for a guild of 5 active players.

(And casual passers-by still have no incentive to help others in a Guild Bounty, because a little coin and a little karma sound like a bad deal if you expect the guild members to receive 50s, Guild Commendations and 2 rares.)

While the first problem is (partially) addressed through the addition of Training Bounties, the choice to not have these award any Guild Merits or Guild Commendations still leaves small guilds in the “have-not” camp for as long as the second problem persists.

If the guild leader is “suspended permanently”, that would imply that the account will be deleted at some point in the (near?) future.

As far as I know permanently suspended accounts are never deleted, but as the word implies permanently suspended. The amount of resources needed to keep an account are so small there is no need to delete them

If this is the case, you could ask ArenaNet to consider the policy of removing a player account from any guilds as soon as it is permanently suspended. This would also solve the problem for the guild.

(I am phrasing this deliberately as a general policy, because they have already stated that they will never take action in individual guild-related issues and disputes.)

If the guild leader is “suspended permanently”, that would imply that the account will be deleted at some point in the (near?) future.

If the guild leader’s account ceases to exist, the guild leader rank in your guild should pass down to the most senior member, because a guild cannot be without a guild leader.

You could ask ArenaNet whether the account will indeed be deleted, and if so, when, and what exactly will happen with the guild leader rank in the guild.
(Asking them for information will surely yield an answer, even if they refuse to actively intervene in guild politics.)

Also, if guild leadership does not pass down to someone else upon deleting the guild leader’s account, you could submit a bug report, because then you would have a guild with no player account designated as guild leader, which should never happen.
