People, you should file bug reports in-game instead of complaining in this thread.

While ArenaNet staff read the forums, they might miss this specific thread. Bug reports will get specifically looked at by them. Especially if a bug is reported by hundreds of people. (Just don’t count on a reply to your bug report.)

Fractals of the Mists disconnections.

Jornophelanthas.1475

I wholeheartedly second this suggestion. Whenever a player in Fractals of the Mists disconnects, the character’s last-known location is Lion’s Arch.

It would be far better if the player receives a new prompt to join his party in the Fractals of the Mists upon re-entering the game in Lion’s Arch.

If you disconnect from a dungeon, you can still join your party when you return.
But if you disconnect from Fractals of the Mists, you can never rejoin your party unless everyone comes back out to Lion’s Arch (and aborts the run).

Error 42 - login servers down?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Jornophelanthas.1475

15 minutes ago, I was gathering a party to enter a dungeon (Citadel of Flame, on the Gandara EU server). As one of my party members zoned from Hoelbrak to Wayfarer Foothills, he got kicked out of the game by the login servers with Error 42. (He called me by phone to explain this.)

10 minutes ago, one party member said he would zone to Lion’s Arch to gather a replacement party member. His status went to offline as soon as he left.

5 minutes ago, I gave up on the dungeon logged out to the character selection screen in order to play a different character on my account. I then received Error 42, and was kicked out of the game. Every time I attempt to log in, I get the same error and can no longer enter the game.

I suspect it may be a similar problem to launch day and the one-time Halloween cinematic. People are getting kicked out of the game because the login servers are not responding.

Is ArenaNet aware of this issue?

EDITED TO ADD: But logging in to the forum to post this succeeded without a problem.

The Stone Sheath bug

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Jornophelanthas.1475

First, your profession has nothing to do with it. This mission is the same for all characters, as long as they choose to become a member of the Durmand Priory.

And this is a known bug (although I thought it had been corrected before). There is a solution to your problem, though.

When you approach the shore, drop the bundle in shallow water before you break the surface (while you still have your underwater skillbar). Then get out of the water (which changes you to your regular skillbar), and pick up the bundle item from the shore.
You can then proceed to give it to Magister Sieran.

Annoying display bug in "My Story" on hero screen

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

For some weeks, I have been affected by a very annoying display error in the “My Story” tab on the hero screen of one of my characters. For the record, this character is a sylvari, a member of the Durmand Priory, and has the greatest fear of “causing the death of an innocent”. And I have not yet completed the personal story completely.

Description of the bug:
As you know, the “My Story” tab consists of two sections. On the left side, there is a “table of contents” listing all the story entries (with a scrollbar), and on the right side a large screen shows the appropriate image and text for the selected entry. The bug affects the left “table of contents” section.
Whenever I scroll down past a certain point, all the entries in the left window disappear. Whenever I scroll back up past that point, everything suddenly reappears.
The point where this happens is always the same: whenever the line below the story entry “Starving the Beast” would appear. That line would be “Ossuary of Unquiet Dead”, but it never appears. And neither do the four other story entries I have since completed.
None of this has any bearing on the right part of the window: the selected story step remains unchanged. This leads me to believe it is a display error in the “table of contents” part, and not an error in the personal story itself.
This has been consistently occurring ever since the entry “Ossuary of Unquiet Dead” first appeared in the list, and I have already made an in-game report of it some weeks ago.

I find this bug extremely annoying, because it prevents me to read back my personal story logs past the point of “Starving the Beast”. While my current personal story chapter is automatically selected upon opening the hero screen, I can never read back log entries between “Starving the Beast” and my current chapter. Therefore, I would be very grateful if this issue could be fixed.
Also, I am hoping a staff member could comment on whether this is a known bug, or if this is the first time it has been reported.
Finally, if anyone else experiences this same bug (perhaps even at the same point in the story), could you please indicate that in this thread? I am curious to know whether more people are affected.

Thank you for your time.

Toggle gear display on/off

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

While I personally do not really see the need for a toggle on footgear, the glove suggestion does make sense to me. But to each their own.

There could be a snag, though. When equipment gets broken, it is no longer displayed on your character. Therefore, if you see a partially undressed character, this most likely means that they have been defeated many times without repairing their equipment. The option to hide/display (nearly) all equipment pieces could cause confusion with regard to this, especially in PvP/WvW.

On a related note, I would like to mention one of my pet peeves, which is related to the issue of toggle boxes on equipment. I would very much like the dialogue cutscenes to respect the equipment toggles. As it is now, all headgear is hidden during dialogues, and that setting overrides the hide/unhide toggle on headgear. I would like to see that changed.

Is this really a suggestion thread, or a rant thinly disguised as a set of suggestions? I don’t think this thread title invites towards very constructive discussion, either.

I think the author creates a problem (specifically the issue that the game is “dying”, just because he is losing interest himself), and then invents a set of badly thought out suggestions that would destroy the in-game economy.

Finally, the post is very hard to read because of lack of interpunction, which does not invite anyone to actually read it. And the argument to “lighten up” has never convinced anyone of anything.

Personally, I believe this is better placed in “general discussion” than under “suggestions”.

Headgear & shoulders in dialogue cutscenes

Currently, when my character enters a dialogue cutscene, the game automatically displays shoulder armor, and automatically hides headgear.

My suggestion is to change the settings during dialogue cutscenes to respect the “display helmet” and “display shoulders” settings in the Hero Screen.

In other words, if I want to see my character’s cool helmet, or if I don’t want to see my character’s ugly shoulder paddings, I should also be able to do so during dialogue cutscenes.

first, i loved your video!….

but i have a question…

i always die at the “leap of faith” because the platform i’m suppose to land on (that you showed in your video) is covered in the “green goo” already.

is that because i’m getting to the leap of faith “too late”, like.. i’m taking too long to get there? Like does it mean i did the earlier parts of the puzzle “too slow”?

Or… am i suppose to wait a long time and eventually the “green goo” will go away? and stop covering that platform??

You need to get there sooner. Try to use paths that run closer to the tower (right side of the screen), as that is a shorter distance. Also, make sure not to stand still for a full second or more at any point.
If you’ve already landed on the cog and the green goo starts to cover it, there is still a small window of time to jump off onto the next platform, even though skeletal arms are already trying to grab you.

If that’s the one with the burning village in Harathi Hinterlands, you need to actually start the event by finding a Suspicious Location in a hard-to-see place.

While standing on the mossy bridge, perform “Etheric Scan”. A Suspicious Location should appear near one end of the bridge, inside one of the gaps on the stone railing. Inspect, and the burning village appears.

Approach it, and perform “Aqueous Scan” to find the Suspicious Location that gives you the bucket. Make sure to stay out of the area enclosed by the flames until ALL the flames are extinguished.

(Putting the place to activate the event in a spot a little further away is probably deliberate, because it’s not fun to suddenly have a ghostly fire lit around you, which then burns you to a crisp in seconds.)

I can’t tell such a difference from this forum alone. Because in the end, all evidence is anecdotal, and therefore, near-worthless.

I blame the fact that too many people refuse to enjoy surprises, and insist on wanting to know everything they can receive in advance.

These are the same people who blame ArenaNet for not posting all secrets, builds, loot tables and optimal game strategies on the official wiki. What they fail to appreciate is that the wiki is a community project by the players, and that the wiki is incomplete because the game is new.

Really, it’s like little children who want to watch their parents wrap their birthday presents, to ensure that they will not be disappointed when the time comes to unwrap them.

Reduce XP for 70-79 personal story

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

Starting at level 70 (“The Battle at Fort Trinity”), the personal story density increases to one story per (recommended) character level, with the instances taking us progressively deeper into Orr. As usual, a personal story rewards around 33% experience towards the next level.

At the same time, Orr is a region without renown hearts, and a large number of (meta-)events. Some of these (meta-)events even need to reach a certain stage in order to safely progress through Orr.

The problem I identify is that it is very hard to NOT level beyond the recommended level for my personal story past level 70. The reason for this is that the huge XP bonus for completing a story, in addition to XP earned during exploring and participating in the events along the way, are more than enough to level me up before I even reach the next personal story instance.
This means that the story rewards are potentially no longer appropriate for my level, and that there is a decent chance I already have better equipment than the personal story awards.

In fact, the only viable way for me to complete my personal story AT THE RECOMMENDED LEVEL at all, is to not craft between personal stories and to not do any additional exploring as I travel twoards my next story instance. The events (and occasional node gathering) I find along the way are already enough to level me to the point where I should be for the personal story.

The bottom line is that I do not want to actively avoid crafting and exploring Orr in order to enjoy my personal story rewards.

The suggested solution I offer is to reduce the experience rewards for the level 70-79 personal stories by half. It would seem more balanced that personal stories award half the experience if they have twice the frequency.

I am assuming that the mini-games were not ready to be included at launch, and will be added later. ArenaNet has repeatedly stated that they release new content “when it’s done”.

In one of the articles on their main page (the one discussing live game updates), we were even promised that the “bonus live team” expects to have something new in early November. I am guessing it will be at least one of these mini-games.

What are capital cities for?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

They are meant as places for players to hang out, trade and craft. Unfortunately, most players seem to be doing this in Lion’s Arch.

One of the main attractions to the racial cities was intended to be mini-games. For example, Divinity’s Reach would have a barfight mini-game with interactive (and destroyable) furniture (advertised by ArenaNet before game release). For another example, I highly suspect from some NPC dialogue in BWE3 that the Black Citadel is supposed to have a shooter mini-game, where you fire “ghost-round cannons” at Ascalonian ghosts.

At the moment, only one of these mini-games is actually implemented in the game: Keg Brawl. From how this works, it stands to reason that any new mini-games will also have new achievements tied to them.

Order of Whispers Medium Armor Dye -> 4th dye area!!

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Another example of this is the male sylvari town clothing. This has 2 dye areas, which cover less then half of the garments. The rest (approximately 70% of the shirt, and 40% of the leggings) is the same color as the character’s skin.

Perhaps this was done deliberately to create the illusion that the clothing is literally grown from the sylvari’s body, but the unwanted end result is that it is quite hard to see the texture of the town clothes, because it is difficult to distinguish whether the sylvari’s skin is showing through or not.

Hide/unhide gear in dialogue

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

The October 7th patch has changed the character selection screen to respect characters’ visibility options of equipment. This means that if you choose to hide your helm and/or shoulder armor, it will not show up on the character selection screen.

My suggestion is simple: Please do the same for dialogue cutscenes.

Currently, dialogue cutscenes remove a character’s headgear by default, probably to show off the realistic lip synching animations. However, I am requesting to leave this decision up to the players. This allows players still more freedom in their characters’ appearance in yet another part of the game.

And I know that it can be done, because whenever a character is disguised, the headgear part of the disguise (usually a mask) is always displayed in dialogues.

Therefore, ArenaNet, please have the dialogue cutscenes respect the hide/unhide options on both head and shoulder armor.

Also, if I may post another suggestion, it would be a cool idea if these journal trophies could be represented by visual decorations in the home instance at some point.

Dear Jeffrey Vaughn,

Thank you for your reply.

For two characters, I have been playing the personal story since the Three-Day Head Start. I have played two newer characters within the past two weeks. I shall list each of these characters with their story choices and their journal trophies, as it is now. Please note that I do not have any other visible trophies than the ones mentioned below.

Character 1 story choices
- Race: Sylvari
- Character creation 1: Shield of the Moon
(story decision: I accompanied Tiachren to confront Ysvelta, and did not defend Astorea with Caithe)
- Character creation 2: “Where Life Goes”
(story decision: I traveled with Caithe and Malyck to find the pod, and I did not visit the seer with Trahearne)
- Order: Durmand Priory
(associated journal trophy: “Durmand Priory Key” with story entry “Dredging up the Past”)
- Tribal race: Hylek
(associated journal trophy: “Ikniu’s Spear” with story entry “Unholy Grounds”)
- Reinforcements: Tegwen & Carys
- Greatest fear: causing the death of an innocent
(trophy not related to a story decision: “Lion’s Arch Banner” with story entry “Retribution”)
- Most recent story completed: “Forging the Pact”

Character 2 story choices
- Race: Human
- Character creation 1: Commoner
(story decision: I saved the orphanage, not the hospital)
- Character creation 2: Lost sister
(story decision: I followed Tervalen, and did not report back to Logan)
- Order: Order of Whispers
(associated journal trophy: “Order of Whispers Emblem” with story entry “Stealing Secrets”)
(associated journal trophy: “Human Male Pirate Boots” with story entry “Down the Hatch” – note: this character is a human female, and this trophy, unlike any others I’ve seen, has yellow lettering and a sell price in its pop-up text box)
- Most recent story completed: “Down the Hatch”

Character 3 story choices
- Race: Norn
- Character creation 1: Defeat our ancient foes
(story decision: I fought the griffon to forge the special sword, and did not seek help from the wolf shaman)
- Character creation 2: Blacked out
(story decision: I attacked the dredge head-on, and did not ambush them as they transported the chugger)
(associated journal trophy: “Chugger Key” with story entry “The Machine in Action”)
- Most recent story completed: “The Machine in Action”

Character 4 story choices
- Race: Charr
- Character creation 1: Iron Legion
(associated journal trophy: “Ghostbore Musket” with story entry “Scrapyard Dogs”)
(associated journal trophy: “Ghostly Torch” with story entry “Ghostbore Musket”)
- Character creation 2: Sorcerous Shaman
- Most recent story completed: “Ghostbore Musket”

What surprised me is that my more recent personal story instances appear to award these “trophies” far more often than the story instances during the first few weeks since the game’s release.
In fact, my charr (which I only started playing yesterday) has already acquired TWO trophies within the first three story chapters, while my sylvari and human only got their very first one after joining an order at level 31.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that my sylvari’s story log contains several anomalies:
1. I have two entries entitled “Awakening”. The first of these is a one-sentence recap of the character creation prologue, while the second entry is a longer recap of the first story step in the “Tiachren & Ysvelta” storyline. I assume these two very different entries were not intended to have the same name.
2. The story entry “Bad Blood” contains no text. I completed this instance with the decision to find an ancient dwarven sheath, and not to craft one at the Durmand Priory.
3. The story entry “The Battle of Claw Island” ends abruptly in the middle of the second sentence. The full entry is: “After the defeat at Claw Island, the survivors returned to Lion’s Arch. It will take” (sic).
4. The story entry “The Ghost Rite” first correctly mentions Steward Gixx of the Durmand Priory, but the second paragraph then contains the sentence: “General Soulkeeper is returning to Vigil Keep to rally an army.” This latter sentence is probably out of place, since General Soulkeeper did not appear in the instance.

Thank you for your time looking into this issue. I appreciate it.

(Missing) Trophies in Personal Story Log

This is a question directed towards ArenaNet staff.

In the personal story log on the Hero Screen [H], trophies are occasionally shown to commemorate the achievement of completing a story, for example upon meeting your Order mentor for the first time.

Recently, i started a new character, and I noticed that he received a trophy for a level 10-20 storyline. By contrast, my older characters did not.

Therefore, I believe these nifty little trophy icons in the story log were added after release, and are NOT retroactively added to story steps that were already completed.

This makes me feel left out for playing the personal story shortly after release. I want those mementos for completing the story on my oldest, most advanced character.

Can anything be done about this?
Should I post a bug report about this?
Should this thread be moved to the “Game Bugs” forum?

In reply to Gynxz, you make it sound like you don’t LIKE to play the game, and you ONLY like getting the rewards for it.

If this is the case, then I guess this is not the game for you. Guild Wars 2 rewards play skill, exploring the game world, playing with others, and joining events. The idea is to do things that are fun, and to get rewards while having fun.

Only being in it for the rewards is okay if you’re talking about a job, but not if you’re talking about a recreational hobby. If you’re not having fun while playing, then I don’t understand why you play at all.

Do not use waypoints every 5 minutes. There are plenty of people who do not add up how much they actually spend.
And as a corollary, try to die less. That saves waypoint travel too.

Also, while you’re trekking across a zone, you should participate in events you see along the way, and gather up crafting materials from the various nodes you pass. Even if you don’t use them for crafting yourself, just put them up on the Trade Post.

You are even likely to encounter foes along the way. Perhaps you should defeat them and take their loot, instead of rushing past them to get to your “endgame content”.

The secret is that the “endgame” is more than just the dungeons.

Fit Warrior more closely to the Warrior ethos/description

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jornophelanthas.1475

Jornophelanthas.1475

I do not like this idea, for the following reasons:

1. This idea is a throwback to the warrior class in “that other MMO” by a company named Blizzard. The way to success for Guild Wars 2 is through INNOVATION, not IMITATION.

2. “Stance dancing” as some people call it – or frequently switching from one set of skills/bonuses to another is a game mechanic that is already present in a Guild Wars 2 profession: the Elementalist with its four attunements. Guild Wars 2 does not need a second profession with that mechanic.

3. The idea of giving the warrior a passive combat bonus with some degree of choice/customization is also already present in a differen Guild Wars 2 profession: the Guardian with its virtues. And honestly, having three passive bonuses that can be temporarily sacrificed for an immediate effect sounds a lot more fun and interactive than a building up a passive bonus that you are unable to lose until the current combat ends.

4. The Warrior’s current (acutal) adrenaline mechanic is simple and flavorfull, as it allows a steady build-up of a special powerful attack as long as your are actively engaging an enemy, which can then be unleashed upon enemies. This builds suspense, is climactic if timed well, and is essentially a very warrior-like thing.
(Remember, I’m not talking about game balance, but about profession design. So whether or not Adrenaline Skill X is powerful enough is not the point. The point is that it is MEANT to be a skill with significant impact on the combat.)

That silly Trahearne. He is intended to remember you, he must have been in one too many battles as of late. Things have been a little crazy in Tyria with the dragons awakening and all.

We’ve got a bug in for that and will get it all sorted out. Players who haven’t met Trahearne should get that sort of reaction, but those who know him get differenet treatment. Thanks for pointing this out to us!

I have now played the Battle of Claw Island as a sylvari who is a member of the Durmand Priory, and Trahearne indeed recognized me and greeted me as an old friend.

However, my Priory mentor (Sieran) then proceeded to introduce me to him anyway before continuing the talk with the commander.

Costs of Travel

For the person complaining about the travel cost between Rata Sum and Lion’s Arch:

Use the Asura gate to travel between cities. It’s free.

Asura gates actually counterbalance the cost of waypoint travel. The downside is that some parts of the map (especially the level 60+ areas) are quite far from the nearest Asura gate.

Therefore, my suggestion is NOT to reduce waypoint travel, but INSTEAD to add one or two Asura gates, which perhaps need to be “unlocked” just like waypoints.

WP travel cost has a purpose, which is to encourage us to actually travel around Tyria, and to tempt us into participating in events along the way. If players could just travel for free or negligible costs, nobody would be participating in events at all.

Finally, the cost of a single WP trip can be gained back in any area. Yes, even in starting zones. You just need to gather tier 1 materials and sell them on the Trade Post as you go.

Having said that, I am of the opinion that the cost for level 80 characters are on the high side.

ArenaNet has responded to some of these suggestions, that have already been made many, many times on this forum.

1. Inspecting other players
They are undoubtedly aware of this request already, but have not issued a formal response, to my knowledge. They may or may not do this. However, it will be low priority, because it does not improve the stability or playability of the game.

2. /follow
I’m fairly sure this is intentionally left out, similar to click-to-move. ArenaNet wants to discourage players from receiving XP and rewards while being AFK, and they do not like botting. Like it or not, but adding a “/follow” command to the game is basically allowing players to enter “bot” mode. It is making the game too easy.
Additionally, “/follow” can result in harassing and griefing other players, by just following them around an area while they don’t want to. The designers have always stated that they put player fun first, meaning that they don’t want anything in their game that allows some players to bother other players.

3. Dueling
It has already been stated that they WILL add this at a later stage. Getting the game to run smoothly gets priority, though. (Like removing all the bugs from personal stories, balancing WvWvW, and ensuring account security.)

4. Friend login notification
This has been suggested before, but I don’t know if they have also responded to it. However, again, it is a “polishing up the game” issue, and will therefore have low priority. Especially if you can already check whether your friends are online by pressing a single key.

5. Player trading in person
This was deliberately not added to the game, because every MMO that has ever used this system, has been flooded with issues of players scamming other players. ArenaNet’s philosophy is that the Trade Post is a method for trading that is far more secure, and far less easy for scammers to use than any direct trade window. Sorry, but this one will not happen in this game.

Leveling trouble

Make sure to participate in dynamic events while you explore. These award large chunks of experience points, karma and even some coin.

Some dynamic events also spawn merchants with unique items, or a chest with random above-average quality loot.

Also, talking to certain NPCs may even trigger the start of a dynamic event.

Finally, stick around for a minute or two at the end of an event, because a follow-up event (with its own rewards) may be starting soon.

Some unsorted suggestions:

- Allow players to display their characters’ headgear during dialogue cutscenes;

- Sylvari town clothes are only recolorable in very small areas; please add a dye channel for the remaining 75% of the garment.

- The rare (yellow) dungeon armor skin is the same for all dungeons, and also drops from monsters in explorable zones. This armor skin should be unique to dungeons.

- Please remove the option for players to put up items for sale from anywhere in the world; have them walk up to a Black Lion Trader, or at least reduce this to “anywhere in a non-instanced city”.

Cut Scenes Dialog Cutting In/Out

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

I experienced this problem too, and never before today. Occasionally, a Scout’s dialogue starts a little late when the area is still loading, but as it is now, I am missing significant parts of cutscene dialogues.

Oddly enough, during dialogues, the characters make all appropriate gestures, but their lips don’t move when they skip their lines. This makes it seem like a server-side issue, rather than client-side.

As a last addition, during a personal story instance (Human Order of Whispers level 26 ‘The Sad Tale of the “Ravenous”’), my character’s disguise was not visible. Except that my headgear was displayed during the cutscene dialogues. I tried one supposedly-disguised dialogue with standard adventuring gear, and one with town clothes (just to make sure that my regular outfit was not identical to the disguise). My character’s appearance in the second dialogue had reflected my switch to town clothes, and again displayed my (gemstore-bought) headgear.

I like to see my headgear in cutscenes, but I like to see my disguises even more.

Apparently, the game simply does not load certain parts of audio or outfits.

Hm, maybe it has an unlisted minimum range, then? That it misses if you are standing TOO CLOSE to the enemy?

I’m not saying this is intended, but if you can find out a likely cause or reason for the possibly increased miss chance, you can make a stronger point towards the designers.

If it is a bug, then it will be fixed sooner if you can tell them exactly under what circumstances it occurs.
If it is working as intended, they will be able to provide a specific explanation why it is intended to work that way.

Expire Buy/Sell orders.

I second this suggestion.

MAYBE having an unsold item returned to your pickup queue will make players aware that there is insufficient demand for it, and will move them to either vendor or salvage the item. Because putting it up on the Trade Post again brings extra cost: the listing fee is not reimbursed and must be paid every time you put an item up for sale.

CERTAINLY, removing items that have not been sold for longer than three-four days will remove pressure from the Trade Post database, which already stores billions of items at this point. I don’t know how many of those are items that are completely unsellable at the price that is being asked for them, but removing those could potentially speed up the Trade Post, and reduce the server space and processor capacity required to keep the Trade Post running.

Finally, I am suspecting that a good number of the items for sale on the Trade Post are dumped there by their owners, and that these owners have offered so many items there that they don’t know or don’t care whether some of them will never sell.
(While they complain that they don’t have enough gold.)

I only played a thief in beta, but could it be that the range of the skill was adjusted? Maybe you need to stand really close to the enemy now?
(Would make sense for a skill that has the flavor of a killing blow.)

You can still get a use out of karma items once you replace them with better equipment:

Put them in the Mystic Forge!

(This is not a suggestion, this is already the case.)
