Suggestion: Necros stronger as fight goes on

Problem 1. Necromancer Death Shroud isn’t all that useful besides for mitigating damage. Life Blast is a disappointment, and isn’t much stronger even if you have more Life Force.

Problem 2. Necromancers lack a PvE niche even with cleave. If ArenaNet promotes “getting stronger as fight goes on”, I would like to see that be true.

Kain Francois.4328

During the Ready Up livestream, Necromancer strengths were described as “getting stronger as the fight goes on…”, comparing Necromancers to “sucking the life force of enemies…”

Well… I have to say that is the best idea I’ve heard in a long time!

Currently in PvE and dungeons, Warriors, Guardians, and Elementalists are masters of burst, and short fights (like in CoF). However, they also remain the masters of sustained damage in long fights as well. Why not change that?

Give Necromancer its own niche: Higher damage as a fight goes on. In other words, make Necromancers have higher damage than Warriors during a prolonged fight. This would make Necromancers shine much more in places like Fractals of the Mists, or in Arah like against Giganticus Lupicus.

Here are some ideas:

—New profession mechanic!
Corruption
Apply a stack of corruption to a foe (max 25 stacks). For each stack of corruption, your weapon skills deal 1% more damage.

Explanation: It works like a form of vulnerability, except it cannot be removed, and it is personal for the Necromancer. This allows them to deal more damage to a foe the longer a fight drags on.

—Added Functionality!
Necrotic Bite (Third Dagger Autoattack chain)
no cooldown
Strike your foe and gain life force (6%). Apply a stack of corruption to target foe (40s).

Explanation: Naturally, our autoattack gets stronger the more it is used, because of corruption. This fits wonderfully into the “getting stronger as fight goes on” motif of Necromancer, and it certainly fits considering Daggers are our highest damage set. Furthermore, it is quite balanced because it could strike only one target.

—Added Functionality!
Life Blast (Death Shroud #1)
no cooldown
Blast a foe with life force, dealing more damage the closer you are to your target. Apply 2 stacks of corruption to struck foe (40s).

Explanation: Currently, there is not much a need to use Death Shroud in PvE. Typically people “flash” it to gain buffs, and forget about the skillset. This sort of change would promote a Necromancer to use Life Blast as a core skill to getting stronger as a fight goes on.

—Added Functionality!
Mark of Blood (Staff #2)
6s cooldownInscribe a mark that bleeds foes when they trigger it, and grants regeneration to allies. Foes struck are inflicted with 2 stacks of corruption (40s).

Explanation: AoE option for applying corruption. Useful in situations involving stacking because Mark of Blood can be stacked at a certain location for a mob of foes to run into.

I believe these changes could singlehandedly fix the Necromancer’s place in the PvE endgame!

To get started, we’d like to ask a few open-ended questions to all of you. In your opinion, what should the strengths and weaknesses of each profession be? What’s your profession’s kryptonite? And remember, no single profession should be the best at everything!

Hi, great thread!

I"ll bite…

Warriors:
Strengths:
-Masters of High DPS,
-Buffs for damage (might, fury, banners, etc…)
Weaknesses:
- Countered by tactics and critical thinking. For example: Conditions like Chill and Crowd Control.

Guardian:
Strengths:
- A master of support. Protection, Reflects, and useful CC options which prevent foes from crossing.
- Currently in a good spot regarding balance.
Weaknesses:
- Boon Removal
- poison,

Ranger:
Strengths:
- Rangers should be the glass cannons of the game. They should be able to deal incredibly high consistent DPS which makes them worthy of speedclears, however this is balanced becausse our pets can die so easily.
- They should also have unique buffs galore (expand on spirits!),
- Quickness more available than any other class.
- Interrupting foes through defiance!
Weaknesses:
- Keeping the pet alive!

This:
Strengths:
- High burst damage
- Stealth spam
- Permablind
- Currently in a good place with balance, no matter what QQers say.
Weaknesses:
- Fragile as heck!
- Bad range

Engineer:
Strengths:
- Versatility
- Conditions
- Blast finishers
- Combo fields
- Kiting (bomb kit)
- Medium range consistent damage (Flamethrower is NOT a projectile…)
- Turrets
Weaknesses:
- Retaliation+Flamethrower=kitten
- A jack of all trades

Mesmer:
Strengths:
- Utility (Time warp, portal, etc…)
- Projectile reflection
- Confusing foes with clones (WvW/PvP)
Weaknesses:
- medium health, medium damage…

Elementalist:
Strengths:
- Very short but HIGH bursts (FGS Rush)
- Conjure weapons (Lightning Hammer)
- Fire Fields
Weaknesses:
- More fragile than a thief

Necromancer:
Strengths:
- Masters of control (making certain areas dangerous to stand on with marks/wells, controlling movement with fear, etc…)
- Boon removal
- Condition cleanse
- Mantaining Weakness+Chill even on bosses
- Bulkiest class in the game
Weaknesses:
- mostly Single-target damage

WTB PvE Competent Necros

If a necro cared about meta, why would he play necro since necro is not in the meta?

Very high damage, provided there are buffs.

I’ve seen videos where it deals 8k(x2)+7k+11k damage autoattack. Combined with Wells, I believe a Necromancer could even out-dps a Warrior.

However, I would like to see tests about this.

Serious answer:

The reason you don’t see competent players using necromancer is because competent players run Warrior/Guardian instead when running with PuGs, and save Necromancer for guildies. That leads the bads to represent any PvE necromancer you might come across.

[Suggestion] Scythe Weapon (2Handed)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Kain Francois.4328

I didn’t play GW1, to be honest, but what classes could use Scythes (Dervish aside, as they don’t exist anymore).

After checking, it appears that they were Dervish exclusive, and those do not exist in GW2 as they used to be (Guards are a combination of Dervish, Paragon and Monk, I believe).

Actually, Scythes were a near-universal weapon in GW1. Although a secondary profession was necessary to use it in most builds, so was the Sword, Hammer, Bow, etc… However, Scythes still remain the one weapon which was useful across almost all professions.

Warrior: Warrior’s Endurance builds
Ranger: Scythe Pet builds
Mesmers: Illusionary Weaponry
Elementalist: Conjure Frost (at one point…)
Assassin: Critical Scythe + Underworld Speedclears
Ritualist: Spirit’s Strength + Zealous Energy management
Dervish: Enchantment juggling
Paragon: Scythepara “Go for the Eyes” build

The only possible competition to the usefulness of Scythes in GW1 are Daggers (Death Blossom-spam) and Spear (Caster modded).

Necro Ele CDI?

Ele CDI?

…. You kidding me!? They’re currently one of the top professions in the entire game! Suppot, Buffs, fury, might, good range, aoe, combo fields, and skyyyyyyyyyyy higghhhhhh damage!

I do agree necromancer needs a CDI though. They are by far the least wanted profession in dungeons.

While it is true Rangers are wonky due to a worse playerbase (bearbows) and badly designed mechanics (sword autoattack), they still remain one of the most used clases in the game, with unique buffs (frost spirit+spotter). Not to mention, their damage with 1h sword+Jaguar is great too!

Necromancers, on the other hand, are in a class of their own. They are in such a bad shape, that even the normally bad players avoid them.

MOX was a Golem hero added to Guild Wars 1 as part of a series of Content Updates called Guild Wars: Beyond.

Guild Wars: Beyond was a series of storylines intended to bridge the lore to Guild Wars 2, such as the founding of Ebonhawke, the royal line of Kryta, the isolation of Cantha, and the Tengu wall.

However, MOX always stood out as an anomaly in Guild Wars: Beyond, in that he doesn’t connect to Guild Wars 2 in any way. Or does he?

As a Golem, MOX is able to live those 250 years between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2. Having also traveled with the original Hero of Tyria, he also recorded great knowledge of past events (chronologically the War in Kryta…)

Is it possible we will ever see MOX again?

Scythe 2h Weapon.

Concept: Boon Juggling (Sound familiar?)

Inspired by the Dervish, Necromancer scythe continues its arts by sacrificing boons to deal damage to foes.

Its #4 and #5 skills are used to quickly stack vulnerability while dealing massive damage bursts which make Necromancer useful for speedruns as long as they can mantain might.

1a- Cleave
Slash a foe. Can strike up to 5 targets.
1b- Slash
Slash a foe. Can strike up to 5 targets.
1c- Zealous Sweep
Gain 7s of might for every foe you hit. Can strike up to 5 targets.

2-Wounding Strike
Strike up to 5 foes. Deal conditions.
Bleed 3x
Cripple

3-Reap Impurities
Quickly strike up to 5 foes. For each condition on foes hit, you gain a boon.
Bleeding – Might (per stack)
Blind – Aegis
Burning – Fury
Chilled – Vigor
Confusion – Retaliation
Crippled – Swiftness
Fear – Stability
Immobilized – Swiftness
Poison – Regeneration
Torment – Might (per stack)
Vulnerability – Protection
Weakness – Fury

4- Reaper’s Sweep
Strip 5 stacks of might from yourself. For each stack of might removed, this skill deals +20% more damage and recharges 20% faster.

5-Chilling Victory
Strip yourself of the all boons. Deal conditions with duration equivalant to those boons.
Might – Vulnerability (per stack)
Swiftness – Chill
Fury – Weakness
Aegis – Blind
Vigor – Cripple
Retaliation – Confusion
Stability – Immobilized
Regeneration – Poison
Protection – Weakness

Not to mention, we actually get to use ingame gold by paying 20g per episode.

What I've learned thus far in GW2

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Kain Francois.4328

1) Buy only Berserker gear.
For Dungeon content, yes. And Soldiers for world events, tanky gear for WvW. Condi for PvP. Surprise, surprise! Different gear have their different uses and niches in different parts of the game!

2) Archers suck.
You mean Rangers, or Rangers using a longbow? Because a Ranger wielding a 1h sword and Spotter+Frost Spirit is perhaps one of the most pleasing setups for a group in the game.

3) Engineers suck.
Stealth, Might Stacking, great blanket heals, team condi removal, er…. What sucks about that?

4) Necros suck.
Yes and No…. They have some of the highest consistent DPS in the game using MH daggers. Watch a video of DnT’s Brazil running Necromancer, and you will see he is capable of doing 4k(x2)+8k+11k damage with his dagger autoattack. That is INSANE, even by berserker standards! The main problem is, Necromancer lacks cleave and consistent AoE, making them less than ideal for defeating trash mobs. Furthermore, Necromancers lack support options not outperformed by other classes. Necromancer is… flawed. ANET isn’t sure what they want them to do in PvE.

5) Staff Guardians suck.
Staff is awesome! Crowd Control wall, Buffs, AoE symbol damage, and great ranged damage. Problem is, people should not use ranged weapons on melee bosses, and Wand is more useful in stationary ranged situations.

6) Stack, pull, stack, pull, stack, boss, next.
Strategy, yes?

7) Eles must conjure and must stack might.
Eles must be able to support team members in a team setting? God forbid…

8) There are 3 ways to stay in a group but 840495847204857392948.48 ways to get kicked from one.
Not reading the LFG post is the most frequent reason.

9) Lilith knows fashion.
Who the heck is lilith?

10) For every 1 sensible poster, there are at least 5 or more to counter-act it.
Sup?

11) Gotta blame ANet.
I blame Ellen Kiel.

12) Pugs are always completely and utterly terrible but you’re the only good one in your group.
I’m one of the few who has positive experience with PUGs, believe it or not.

13) Your opinion is the only one that should matter. If anyone tells you otherwise, ignore their “evidence”, attempt to talk circles around them, convince them that they’re wrong and insist that your view is the only valid option. Ever. Period. Kapeesh?
It takes two people to kick someone.

Feedback: What would've made P-Story better

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Kain Francois.4328

Very simple feedback for the Personal Story:

The problem is that the characters keep changing. From Lord Faren to Logan, to Tybalt, to Trahearne, to Apatia, to someforgettableguywedon’tcarebaout.

What if instead, Lord Faren remained with us the entire game?

Taking it a step further, what if our choices for example, leads to the characters we bond with in the story? For example, whether or not our main partner is Quinn or Riot Alice, depends whether or not we allow one of them to die?

Imagine for a second, in the Carnival storyline, instead of Logan and his buck teeth telling us what to do, we sneek around the Ringmaster’s base with Riot Alice raving on about government mind control conspiracies, and blowing our cover?

Characters who develop and react. Their own personalities and different ways of tackling a problem lead to altered mission tactics and branches. Most importantly, characters we can be attached to, who grow.

How would Riot Alice have helped combat the Risen Threat? Try to imagine how she would react, and how she might grow.

(Come to think of it, the story of a Street Rat overcoming their personal issues by being exposed to the world, could’ve been a great idea for a plot…)

On a more personal note, I do hope Episode 2 of the Personal Story has us revisit our starter storyline characters. How would our warband react seeing us commander of the Pact? What about Petra, and the barkeep?

Everything up until the Flame Shaman defense played very much the same. We put a little bit more effort to defend, and breezed it.

Sure, the enemy fights are a little tough, and they could 1ko, but that’s part of the fun. We have things like line of sight, blinds, weakness, crowd control, reflects, and so on. It really wasn’t hard for our group to do any of the encounters. A thief and guardian make this really trivial, y’know. Even a necromancer plays quite well here!

What exactly are the complaints?

Season 2 and Trahearne

I think one of the large reasons Trahearne is hated so much, is largely because of gameplay as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9H7zaD6zs

Also, he stole my sword that I used and loved before him! Give me back Caladbolg, god kitten it! Not only that, but he came in at the worst possible point in the story (right when our mentor died….)

That said, if you ask me, Master Togo was handled pretty well, and was even likeable to an extent. He had something called “character development”. When Factions began, he looked upon us as students studying under him, and even through the early Kaineng City arc, he still acted like a teacher. However, by the time we hit Echavold Forest, the player proved their strength and Master Togo looked at us like an equal, co-ordinating and organizing plans with the player to defeat Shiro. In the end, he is able to trust us enough to completely slay Shiro ourselves, as he gives his life to save his brother. (Not just that, but Master Togo was a complete baddass in the Bonus Mission pack!)

Hey all. What kind weapons do you want on Necromancer?

Personally, I want to see Shields.

There’s just something appealing about using a Dagger+Shield at the same time. Furthermore, I imagine it would work conceptually since Necromancers are the “juggernaut” class which absorbs damage, and shields could be a great opportunity to add much needed fensive skills.

I imagine we also need a cleave weapon. Mace could fit very well thematically, and could be based on chilling in an AoE

Those are my ideas. What are yours?

Proposal: Necromancer Niche in PvE (Control)

in Necromancer

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Well, I haven’t played for long, but I would think that Necromancers have a niche in the form of Minions. It’s just… it isn’t a great niche. Yes, MM is a good build, but for solo play, I’d think. I’ve heard that minions in dungeons/fractals/etc. seem to just get in the way. I want to say that some more support buffs on minions would be nice, but I just don’t have enough experience playing Necromancer to really say what the class needs.

Minions were good in GW1 because they mitigated damage, held agro, and actually BLOCKED FOES FROM CROSSING by forming a living meat wall (GW1 had body blocking)

Since bosses in GW2 have aoe/cleave and can move through minions, they provide nowhere near as much damage mitigation as they did in GW1.

Furthermore, Necromancers hold significantly much less minions in GW2, with only 5 minions compared to 10 in GW1.

In addition, if a minion dies in GW2, they have a recharge of about 30s, as opposed to GW1 where Necromancers were a Minion Making-machine.

Personally, I would love to see Minion Masters come back. However, it would require an entire rework, and it would only be useful in places like FoTM where you do not stack the entire time.

Proposal: Necromancer Niche in PvE (Control)

in Necromancer

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Necromancers are unfortunately not too useful in Dungeons and FoTM. We have high SINGLE TARGET damage and… that’s pretty much it. Warrior with 100b+Axe is better for damage, too. So not much reason to take a Necromancer.

So what could make Necromancers more appealing?

First and foremost, Necromancers need cleave. This is our biggest issue, otherwise Dagger builds would be amazing in stacking situations.

Secondly, we need a niche. Guardians have reflect and protection, Thieves have blinds and stealth, Warriors have the highest damage in the game and banners, Elementalists have conjured weapons. What do Necromancers have?

Personally, I propose giving Necromancers the niche of control THROUGH defiant.

That is, perhaps allowing Necromancers to fear a boss into a wall, then allowing a team their usual stack-zerg things (and synergizing with Flesh Golem’s Charge skill.)

I can definitely imagine this useful for speedruns using Fiery Greatsword.

One concern is that the Warrior’s “Fear me!” would have to be adjusted to make this the Necromancer’s niche. Another concern is that this may trivialize bosses if a Necromancer could permanently fear a foe.

Gas Mask. Because it is a permanent armor skin with a niche use that cannot be fulfilled by any other armor.

- Lifesteal goes through certain defensive mechanics of bosses
