Didn’t the Kournans actually ally with the centaurs to enslave them? I thought the whole point of the centaur-rescue mission was that there were trusted centaurs who backstab Kourna to fight for their freedom?

hush, you’re ruining the fun.

Centaurs are also known for being masters of the Earth Element, and this is highlighted by both the Human tutorial boss, and Ulgoth fight.

If anything, Centaurs probably just make stone bridges for themselves.

Please don't kill off Trahearne

in Living World

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Trahearne can be fixed. Please DO NOT kill him off!

I see a lot of people asking for Trahearne’s death and blood, but I think that would be a huge, HUGE Mistake! Why? In short: It would be repeating the ‘Trahaerne’ cycle over again.

When Trahearne came into the story, players were pre-conditioned not to like him, not because of Trahaerne’s character itself, but because the way the Personal Story was set up.

1. Throughout the entire personal story, from level 1 to finish, we are introduced to characters who befriend us for about 10 levels, then simply get replaced. By level 50, when Trahearne is introduced, we already get that feeling about him as a “replacement”.

2. Our mentor’s death. As players, we thought our mentor would actually stick with us, as they remained for more than 10 levels. Our mentors had spicy, fun personalities, and then they are suddenly replaced. That felt really bad.

3. Trahearne came off TOO much as our friend. There wasn’t much time to build trust, even during the Sylvari storyline. It felt like he was being shoved in our face during the Clawr Island arc, and that instantly made him unlikeable to many.

4. Praise without any exposition. We met Trahearne, and he seemed like an incredibly humble scholar, and he seemed okay. But then other NPCs continuously praise him, and we learn he’s some sort of HERO BADDASS WHO TRAVELED INSIDE AND OUT OF ORR LIKE IT’S NOTHING! Yet to Trahearne, he likes to be humble about it. Okay, that’s all fair, and if he’s a humble baddass, that’s pretty cool. But here’s the problem with that: We never actually learn about what he did. And I don’t mean publishing a short story online. I mean, we never learn, through interacting with characters, why they respect Trahearne so much? That gave players the false impression that he is a Mary Sue or the writer’s pet, and it rubbed us the wrong way.

Yet despite his flaws, most of them aren’t Trahearne’s character itself. Quite the contrary, he is the ONE character to properly thank us and give us credit for our actions, and he even gave us command of the ENTIRE Pact during the battle against Zhaitan!

So why do people hate him, Trahaerne himself? They think he is boring. Why is that? My guess is because we rarely saw him interacting with other characters, so he became too much of a machine simply to guide along the players of the Zhaitan storyline. If anything, Trahearne himself is the victim here, because ANET forgot about him even during his own story arc!

However, this concern about Trahearne can be addressed very easily, and there were a few instances where I felt genuinely interested in his character. During the Sylvari Personal Story, we got to see him interacting with Caithe, while during the Claw Island arc, he was humerously remarking upon his misadventures with Sieran, and he actually made me laugh! It was the few scenes like those, where we actually got to see his personality and interactions with others, which actually gave players an interest in Trahearne!

Sure, Trahearne is a stoic Necromancer who has confidence issues, who is still a little shy even at the party after you defeat Zhaitan. But at the same time, if done right, that personality can make him very loveable if he were to interact and respond to other characters.

What defines a character’s personality are tension, conflict, and their approach to problems. In Trahearne’s case, he is not too good socially, and he is quite shy. Interacting with Taimi and getting a little embarassed around her, is a good way to define who he is. Or perhaps even more interesting, his interactions with a muscle-head like Braham, since Trahearne is a scholar Necromancer who uses tactical reason over Braham’s brute force.

My point is that Trahearne can be good if done right, and killing him off would be a bad decision since it repeats what we were pre-conditioned to hate him in the first place. ANET should instead show the community that Trahearne can be repaired.

So for pete sake, PLEASE keep Trahearne alive! (And stop killing characters so much…)

A case for Trahearne

in Living World

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Trahearne doesn’t deserve the hate he gets. I played the personal story again recently, and he seemed like an okay guy, who had an understandable development of starting off an unsure scholar, and becoming a full fledged commander by the end. Even as a commander, he still had to face his confidence.

Just needs his voice actor to show a bit more emotion, that’s all. But he’s not really that bad of a character.

Correct me if I’m wrong: Lyssa is the Goddess of Water only in a symbolic sense, and not in a literal sense.

In GW1, water was very important in Vabbi religion because they acted as a mirror in the worship of Lyssa. There for, Lyssa is the Goddess of Water for its reflective properties, but not its actual liquid properties.

Correct me if I am wrong, though.

Kain Francois.4328

@OP: Chronic illnesses are very common in real life, believe it or not. Just because a character suffers from believable disabilities doesn’t mean there is some political message or exploitation.

Furthermore, I am pretty sure there are worse representations in Guild Wars than Taimi’s character. For example, the Afflicted were actually a villainous take on “Proteus Syndrome”, yet I don’t expect ANET to think they were offending anyone.

Quite the contrary, whether it’s Taimi or the Afflicted, when you get right down to it, they’re just video game characters, and the explanations behind them are much more simple.

In truth, the biconics actually archetypes of the 5-man band:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand

My point being, they’re just video game characters. Don’t over-politicize things, and don’t try to apply it to your own experiences either.

Taimi’s illness doesn’t define her, nor’ do most people actually pity her either. So why do people love Taimi so much? Because she’s relate-able, and she has a fun personality. She’s really a geeky little kid who obsesses over Scarlet like an otaku over anime. Watching her curious and mischievous antics are entertaining. Most people love her because of that, and it really is that simple. Taimi is a fun character with a nice personality.

I find braham being the only male in the group being portrayed as a thick headed dunce and often the target of the jokes – offensive.

If Braham is a dunce, then Kasmeer is a blond-headed bimbo. Luckily, this is incorrect.

Having played all the Living Story up until now, I’m not sure where people got the idea that Braham is a dunce, though. If anything, he’s more like the older-brother type, and somewhat fatherly.

Rangers are a nature class, and gun clash with that.

Now, as much as I want rifles on my Ranger, that is something we must acknowledge.

Instead, I’d like to see Rangers get Hammers, so that we can bunny thump some dragons.

I think if we ever got a new weapon, it would be staff or MH dagger. Those two are really all that fit in with the “druid” lore atm.

But Hammers fit with Guild Wars lore. It even acknowledged by the devs themselves!
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Bunny_Thumper

Not to mention, a famous Ranger character in GW1 also uses a hammer during the Norn Fighting Tournament:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Zho

Considering there was an entire cross-campaign side-quest involving Zho after fighting her in the Norn Fighting Tournament, I’d think Hammers and bunny thumpers are pretty well established for Rangers in GW lore.

Seriously, ANET needs to consider giving us back Bunny Thumpers. They were a really well loved part of Rangers in GW1.

GW1 = more build diversity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kain Francois.4328

Kain Francois.4328

Build diversity in GW2 can be accomplished through traits, and even the trait-unlocking system is reminiscent.

However, traits themselves would need a huge revamp to truly feel diverse. For the most part, build diversity requires traits to actually change the way a character plays.

Compare Static Discharge (shoot out static bolt when using tool belt) to Air Training (10% more damage while attuned to air). The former actually changes how skills work and how they are used, with entire Engineer builds revolving around that trait, while Air Training is just a flat 10% dmg boost. Obviously the latter is quite boring not very diverse. Quite the contrary, it creates a very negative environment where characters are pressured to use this trait or not use air magic at all!

Moving forward, I would actually like ArenaNet to completely eliminate most traits which give a flat damage boost, and instead work more things like Static Discharge into the game.
