I think that it should be nice try to kill guards and lord without leaving stealth and leave it just for the final capture (the ring part).
Well it would be possible with caltrops and poison fields if thiefs were condi speced, but … why ?

Becouse the “thief community” asked for mobs (specially skill chalanges) not to reset after you stealth. Becouse thief community has so slow fingers, they didnt have enough time to stealthattack mobs after they stealthed. Well here you have it, enjoy.

They can stealth, exit combat and map jump.
If this is true,then it should be fixed that thiefs can no longer use a wp while just in combat and stealthing.Becuase i think i see this happen WAY to often where a thief just straight up dissapears never to come in sight again.This happens very often with nooby thiefs try to jump me with their google pwn build, but now hit something that knows how to handle them,theyr options to escape are too broad,especially if the above is true.
Read what it says – exit combat. Same rulles apply either you are stealthed or not, you must get far enough from your combatant, if that happens you exit combat allso.
The thing about thief con removal trait is it’s still based on hitting someone. Hide in shadows doesn’t really matter because it already removes most stuff. So blinding powder and refuge are the only con removals on demand without hitting someone. Refuge opens you up to a counter (luck based on dodge timing) so you are looking at blinding powder (which many don’t take) as the only sure thing along with Hide in Shadows.
People who block/immune/dodge C&D also stop the thief from blinding/healing/con-remove. It’s a huge part of fighting one. I love running into a trolly thief in the open field. Wait for them to use their heal then I mass invis everyone after second and you have trolly thief just either standing there or a refuge pops I get to try to punt him from. Then they eat a nice little burst combo and it’s time to either be bad and die or shadow-step and try to run away.
Basically the entire shadow arts line is only super erserm if people allow you melee them or fight near mobs.
Don’t forget combo fields that give stealth.
Oh yea d/p. I just go stand near those. Get hit by a Heartseeker at full health and revel them. Teleport near it to really surprise them.
The cool thing about Heartseeker, I can target something far away, and jump that direction, and not hit you.
Don’t forget the shortbow also has a blast finisher, that creates an Area Stealth. Works great with a utility I bet you havn’t considered.
You can target anyone you want, you will still hit that person that you land near, not the one you have on target.
Backstab thieves can kill almost anybody in a second, thats a serious issue with the class and the other thing that bothers me is the initiative system. Add some diminishing return (so noobies dont spam heartseeker for win -.-), like it only does a third of its original dmg after the first use for like 2 or 3 seconds.
If I had to guess… you dont really play a thief.
Allthough, i rly wouldnt mind this change as long as it would work against attacks that actually hit. That would destroy the hasted HS spammers which have no place in thief community anyways. As for the poster before you, no BACKSTAB thiefs cant kill anyone within a second.
If it really is 3600 and the tooltip says 1200 they should fix it.
They should also fix the Shadow Pursuit (second part of Shadow Trap) and let it be 10000 as the tooltip says and not stop on the first mosquito in the field.
Hmm i did use shadow trap for some time and it was working perfectly for me. Sometimes i even got a loading screen when i was far enough lol ( seriously).

What do you expect when multiple peeps start crying that they cant do skill challanges and veterans with stealth builds, becouse they reset. And using DoT utilities to stop that from happening doesnt look like a viable option for these ppl

The AoE Cap is Too low…I don’t see how they can figure out of way to make it where it’s not about the more people you are fighting have the advantage. Removing the AoE cap is the Worst move possible. It WILL be all about AoE’s after that. I can only think about it scaling Dynamically…Thats for Anet to figure out tho. The AoE cap doesnt actually bother me. All they need to do is figure out a way to make Zerging less of a Priority and I bet noone will complain….untill then….
Well increasing orange swords activation from 5 ppl to 25 is a first move. Oh w8 … it actually lets stealth cap things with 24 ppl instead of just 4. So much from my hopes to see small grps being viable.
Removing it altogether would be a horrible move resulting in an AoE centric game. The good thing is I’m quite sure they are aware of this even if many players are not.
And now its a Turtle centric game. So which evil is better ? I say no aoe cap. That would make ppl to give a fk about their position instead of turtling up. Couse now there is only 1 viable formation – that is turtle, couse it will make you more or less immune to aoe, no matter if that breaks every logics.

Come to the forums and cry about it. Make the argument that stealth is overpowered, burst is OP, or both, and beg for nerfs.
As evidence, I would take misleading screenshots of damage done to myself that didn’t have any other context, and then post videos of random thieves on youtube killing complete idiots in WvW to prove my point.
Anyone who disagrees with me would obviously just be telling me to L2P, and since that obviously can’t be the case, I would attack them personally (they are challenging my manhood!)
But seriously, I’d ask for help, be open for advice. Try to get gameplay of it, maybe make a thief myself and really try to understand what I could do differently.

I have a thief as well, and with current cullings it is OP. 1 vs 1 I win almost all the times (except vs thief
). Either 100% fix culling (that means INSTANT VISIBLE PLAYERS after a cloack effect), or nerf cloacking in wvw (only wvw!).
Lets be fair. Anet will not upgrade servers. So culling will still exists on slow system, no way they can fix that, no matter how positive Habid (developper), is. Conclusion: nerf culing, by nerfing cloacking.
I may be dumb programming wise, but I don’t get why in a 1 vs 1 fight (no skill lag, wich means the server has enough resources – skill lag = 3-way Stonemist castle fight), Enemies show up 2 secs after cloacking. Yesterday a thief, hitted me 4x before he appeared. I pressed closest enemy like madness, and even after the ‘revealed’ smoke, i couldnt target him. Wich I for god sake need on my mesmer if I want to put illusion on him.
Anet tell me this: If you turn camera, GPU is 100% ready for it. It all has it calculated, and is barely slowed down by this. Why do you remove cloacked players from the enemies clients gpu? Cause lets face it. If the gpu still knows the cloacked player is there. With all the teraflops available, it’s incredible piece of cake to make them 100% invisible/Visible in a matter of microseconds. The fail on Anet side is, that they unplug cloacked players frmo the enemy clients, and let the servers intructions queue be the decisive matter in when you see the thief.
Also in my opinion backstab is OP. Now don’t flame me. I like the skill and wanna keep it as it is tbh. But the crazy damage multiplier on top of 100% berserker builds (2,5 or more multiplier), is a bit off tbh. Even on a 2600 armor build (almost max a light armor can reach, without sacraficing damage to much), they kitten (9k damage). Wich means to simple backstabs = win. (And with traits they can do at least 3 backstabs (even 4 if they crit enough and the trait on crit gives them some iniative back (minor trait 15 points ,berserker tree), before running out of Initiative.
Do you know how hard it is to land full backstab on a good player. Oh and dont say basilisk venom.
@Xsorus: Sure stealth is an addon for D/D, but it’s an absolute requirement for S/D and P/D. They should probably just nerf Dagger Mainhand instead of making the sets that absolutely require frequent stealth to be effective, useless.

I have no idea how any of this may couse you problems. I have leveled my thief solely with d/d and shortbow, direct damage build. The moment i started having trouble with reseting skill challanges and realized why this is happening i equiped caltrops = problem solved. Simple mobs do not reset that fast. If they reset before you can position yourself to next stealth attack you have serious issues with your character controlling.
Ask your self, what fun it is to play against a class you cannot see most of the time. I guess if other classes could do this you would whine a lot on the forums.

Just get familiar with the thief – it helps to know your opponent and his dirty tricks.

Further more, if you do not run a similar build that allows you to perma stealth, they can hit u for up to 6k with back stab fairly consistently. Especially with a 100% crit chance in stealth.

D/P condition? I think you mean P/D. D/P’s only damaging condition skill is a 2 second poison on the second strike in its combo. In my experience, P/D can’t kill anything that has good condition removal and recovery.

. We shine at killing upleveled and clueless gc inside a busy zerg. If target dont go down in couple of backstabs, I just leave him and pick other.
For each added second to bleed time you need 25,50,75 or 100 % bleed time. Everything over 100 % wont count, everything whatat adds more or less then a full second of bleed will be reduced to full second. For example if you have 74 % bleed time, that will still be 6 seconds, same as if you would have 50 %. With your build ( if u arent speced in deadly arts, i dunno) you have 50 % from gear and possible 40 % from food, so thats 90 % = not optimal ( unless u have 10 in deadly arts). You should change 2x afflicted to 2x centaur.

The thing is that ppl that are aware of how the “game mechanics” work are abusing it to the max. Im speaking of aoe cap and culling. Every organized guild is running in turttles, allmost invinsible to aoe and portal bombing/stealhing all over the place to abuse culling.
I winder if theres a piece of siege is being built and 20 ppl zerg is standing on top of it – will aoe hit the siege lol ?
Aoe cap has to go. Then ppl will actually have to thing about positioning, instead of stacking into 2 meters wide turttle.

The primary error is your assumption that they’re concerned about you backstabbing repeatedly, whilst that would be a problem, I believe you’ll find the stealth has a “cd” not because they’re concerned about the damage, but they don’t want you to be able to instantly escape into stealth… Since as a thief we already enjoy massive mobility, exiting stealth with a hit (in other words, fighting) has to come at some cost of commitment to the fight… If thieves didn’t have to commit at all, they would be nigh impossible to kill
I don’t think so. Hit and run is part of the Thief design philosophy. Engage, disengage, rinse, repeat. I’m almost positive they’re trying to stick with the idea of Thieves not having cooldowns on weapon skill. Unfortunatley due to this, reveal is used to dampen burst damage. The same effect could have been achieved with cooldowns. That’s the whole purpose of cooldowns, so that you can’t spam X, Y or Z.
You want to bet how many times Thief ability damage is going to be adjusted because of this? How many patches adjusted Thief ability damage so far? There will be more.
I feel like that is just a small part of the larger design philosophy which is that thieves use initiative and therefore do not have cooldowns on their weapons abilities. Some of these abilities (e.g. CnD) grant stealth and being in stealth permanently is overpowered. Therefore, introduce “revealed” buff as a way to keep the initiative system while still introducing a sort of cooldown measure to prevent “exploitation” of stealth, which can be powerful for many reasons including but not limited to backstab burst. My 2cents
Yes, initiative is the culprit.
I don’t understand why; as a designer, you would want players to spam ability X, Y, Z. There’s no skillful play here. It’s obvious that the skills which provide most use and utitlity will be overused and the less efficient ones will be underused or even ignored. Even in WoW the Rogue had cooldowns precisely for this reason.
Why on earth is spamming X, Y, Z considered fun, interesting or even skillful in any way?
So you are saying here that you spam abilities on your thief ? Well, bad for you
Oh and if my memory serves right, wow rogues have no cooldowns on their main attacks ( ambush, backstab, sinister strike, hemhorage etc etc).

I get it, they don’t want us to hit/stealth/hit/stealth/hit/stealth. Revealed acts as an artificial cooldown on dagger/pistol/shortbow/sword 1 skills while stealthed. I find it pretty lazy but hey, what do I know.

You should use caltrops ( do u ? ) Then shortbow will be pretty good while kiting mobs inside catrops field while blowing up cluster bombs in mid air. SoM will heal u every time catrops stack bleeds, same will blowed up cluster bombs.

So there’s culling in Spvp too? That’s good to know. I do know that thief skills were nerfed for Spvp, so perhaps perma stealth wouldn’t matter as much there, if it existed. If they want to fix. WvWvW in the same way, fine by me.
Actually … perma stealth does exist everywhere. It all comes down to weapons and traits, not game mode. But as such a thief expert you allready knew that, right ?
As a D/D backstab thief I use blinding powder/shadowstep/signet of shadows. I dont use shadow refugee anymore … While it has its uses in group play, I see none in solo roaming. Blinding powder will get you in, will get you out + blind effect and its overall a nice oh kitten im out of initiative button w/o the huge house with sign “hit me”. Hiden killer allso doesnt work with stealth stacking. Allso when fighting multiple oponents, there is no way you can avoid geting imobilised and bursted down, either by a basilisk thief or 100b warrior, its will happen, which means instant death if you dont have shadowstep, so thats a must in my utilities bar.

Well I am a thief can someone explain how to even utilize steal? I’m new to GW 2 and don’t quite understand builds, all that great but I would like to know how to get long stealth? like 30 secs in PvE or is this only a PvP thing?
stealth is capped at about 15 seconds, you cant stack more. The only possible way to get this much of stealth time is using shadow refuge ( must have 15 in shadow arts to reach cap) or using blast finishers leap finishers multiple times inside smoke field, each aplication will add 4 seconds of stealth ( if traited). Other way is to learn good timing while using Cloak and dagger ( off hand dagger skill) and simply use it again and again after u leave stealth with minimal out of stealth time. This helps while exploring maps in pve a lot.
So I did a quick look-around, and it seems like no one has the guts and/or patience to get a no-offhand thief past like
level 6
Which means its obviously time for that to happen.
Gonna be starting one later tonight, I’ll post on here periodically in case anyone is interested.
A few points of note:
- Yeah I know I’m going to lose roughly 40% of my weapon skills and like 15% of my stats. It’ll be GW2 hard mode, no biggie.
- I’ve got a main as a thief (completely different build – dual daggers, conditions, and acrobatics), but hey at least I’m familiar with the class.
- I’m pretty sure this is going to be a stealth-heavy build. I’ll need some way to survive for longer periods of time. Plus, some of the stealth traits improve mobility.
- Speaking of mobility, it’s likely that every single initiative cost will be shadowstep(or return) and only shadowstep(or return). So that’ll be… interesting.
- I’m vaguely certain I can make this character hard to kill. Extremely so, even. Plenty of dodging, stealthing, and distance management.
- I’m much less certain if I’ll be able to balance that with actually doing appreciable damage.
- sPvP is probably out for me, unless I just use superb mobility to contribute.
- WvW could get really interesting. I kinda forsee myself being able to solo-roam and take out individuals. The trick will be intelligent fighting – quickly identifying what class and what build of that class I’m fighting, as well as how to think 10 steps ahead in terms of distance.Yeah that’s all I’ve got for now, I’ll post more later.

I shelved my thief due to the boring nature of the mechanics on a D/D thief. It’s pretty much 5+Steal, 1,2,2,2,5,1,2,2,2,2…. They should adjust the damage and initiative cost but give us an evade effect when cast. 4 Initiative. Does 550 damage <30% and 150 damage >30%. You can still use it for a gap closer and still hits like a truck on targets with less than 30% health (typically all you would need is it to land once or twice).
Regardless of how this is fixed, it needs to be adjusted. 4-5 initiative cost and adjust the damage or health percentages.
So you have 20-30 initiative ? kitten how do i get it ?

I thought people stopped spamming HS months ago, I never see it anymore. Must be a few nooby thieves out there that think it’s effective.
Dunno man… latelly its becoming more popular, even with D/P which should exclude HS spam at all if not in smoke field, I think its these QQ topics fault, it makes ppl believe they can actually kill someone with HS ! Honestly, I see little asuras flying all over my screen ! And then I kill them . Does that make me a bad person ?
