Noup, sounds like someone forgot to add cc breakers and condi cleaning to their build. you saw stealthd d/p thief with condi gear immobilising enemy with needle trap (or trippwire) and dropping caltrops at their feet. Mentioned enemy was too stupid to use any of avialable cc breaking skills to counter that one trick ponny.

Honestly, I think people are still complaining on other forums the fact that they get backstabbed too many times, and the devs listen to that.

So? What would you rather have? Tons of “Thief isn’t viable anymore” threads? Or a dead forum? And the traits aren’t quite the same as they have been.

Im pretty sure that anyone who was running x/30/30/x/x d/d backstab build back in time and if they decided to stay with it they pretty much figured that 3d line should be trickery (I know I did) and the traits… well there are only so much of them and even less viable ones, so in the end everyone ends up running +- same build.

And yet none of this address the real issue with the Thief that’s existed for 3 years, constant in combat stealth. A good Thief only pop up a few seconds and then vanish again. In a game that’s supposed to be built around counterplay – you see the enemy use a skill, you counter/dodge it – that leads to incredibly broken combat. Being able to combo blast stealth himself is a huge part of this issue, the Thief is by far the best selfcomboer.

TL;DR
None of what OP suggest fix the Thief because they arent even problems.

And here I though that ele is best “selfcomboer”. Oh well, silly me.

So, if I lose Acrobatics I HAVE to switch CS for DA, and this basically turns me into the typical D/P Meta build.

Basically, I see two important keys to an engagement in WvW with dagger. Either I need Mug so that I can trigger Basilisk Venom so that I can stab my target… OR I need the Acrobatics 50% speed boost in stealth, so that I can easily catch up to targets.

I didn’t consider the damage difference that Trickery brings along.

What do you use in PvP?
I have an European keyboard, use WASD for movement and QE for turning the camera.
But I have difficulties to strafe around the enemy as I see other thieves do.
Maybe setting camera to AD would help?

Learn to play without keyboard turning. Forward, back, strafe left and right + mouse.

Then cuddo’s to you, in general when I try, the whole pack in the camp comes for me and I’m overwhelmed basically, sure going invis helps to get away, but not in order to take it… then again, I am not a thief pro, so if you say so I take your word for it. But I am not sure when the last time was that you did this, but maybe things have been nerfed?

Not to be rude, but if you have issues flipping camps with thief (or any other class), you should take a look at your general gaming skills, cause … they suck.

Yeah a 4sec poison field is definitely more powerful than a ranger pet, mesmer illusion or engi turret. >_>

Because any of those classes have as much stealth as a thief? Stealth is the thief’s mechanic, the other classes don’t have anywhere near as much in comparison.

When you consider that mesmers don’t get revealed when attacking from stealth, they can spend almost as much time per minute stealthed as a thief.. The other two don’t have the same access but that’s hardly valid when talking about ‘balancing’ a mechanic for one profession but not doing the same for others that use that very same mechanic. If stealth is going to reveal, it should ALWAYS do so.

The only reason this feels like a nerf more than a fix is because thief isn’t as AI reliant as the other classes you mentioned, but like I said, any AI the thief does actually have won’t reveal the player.

It is not a fix, it will never be a fix. It is another nerf to shortbow, on a 4 second poison field(lol). If we’re going to complain about attacks not forcing a player to leave stealth there are much more powerful things than a poison field. No one complains about shortbow but it is the most nerfed thief weapon set, all of the skills are nerfed. Even warrior longbow has a long way to go before it’s on par with the super duper overpowered thief shortbow.

That doesn’t defend what you’re trying to say, and if you’re still crying about the range nerf to SB, ranger SB got the same treatment. Why is it logical that you can attack enemies from stealth? I assume because you don’t want SB to reveal you, you also want every other attack to keep you in stealth and you only lose it when it runs out? Any attack by the player in stealth should reveal them, not that hard of a concept to grasp.

Tell that to mesmers and their AI.

Really loved the introduction of the exploration and slow pacing of traits, so i elected a thief to be my new pve guy.

Unfortuanetly once you know Black powder is there, unless you’re really forcing to toy around other abilities, simply having a pistol on the off-hand and timing blackpowder to perma blind your foes it’s just… too much access to blind, it makes most of pve irrelevant tbh, or am i missing something at higher levels (lvl28 atm)?

EDIT: oh and btw, the signet for the 25% increased speed… yeah that blinds too and there’s even more access to blind without relying only on initiative but nvm that, there’s also utilities to get you more initiative so spamming blinds it’s a given.

Lol did u try playing something with actual defences then ?:D And yeah at higher (80) levels with berserker gear you (and any other class) wont even need blinds to deal with mobs in open world, they will drop too fast.
Oh and you will regret what you just said once u start doing certain dungeons with your thief when you will get one shoted by trash mobs while your group members will still have 50% hp left.

I didn’t read it all (still want to, though) but it is not really true that we have no 1200 range weapons. Shortbow autoattack, even if it says it is 900 range, is actually 1200 range (similiar to Mesmer GS #1, which is supposed to be 1200 but it’s more like 1350).

I’ll have to test this theory before posting it in the guide. If anyone else can verify that would help a lot.

Didn’t know about this. But at least on paper, we don’t have any 1200 weapon. Our farthest looks like it is going to be pistols with 1050 though.

On the screen you can clearly notice that none of the supposed 900 range abilities are within range (there’s the “red bar” under the skill image).
Infiltrator’s signet, Shortbow #1, Disabling shot… all out of range.

BUT! I just clicked the auto and it hit. Moreover, I tried it with disabling shot, and also disabling shot appears to have 1200 range. I can’t claim that’s 1200 range because it’s not a video, but trust me, it is. I’ll make a video asap.

Its like that since the start of days. If you use shortbow (and longbow i believe) 1 skill manually it reaches further.

Like seriously. I haven’t done this path in months because this fight is so broken now. It does too much damage and it’s literally impossible to do without wiping.

Stack might, drop fgs and kill her in 2 seconds in same corner as always before she kills u. Or freeze her with icebow or any other long lasting cc for even better results.

If ranks were actually difficult or worthwhile to try to obtain…then sure.

I see that EotM minimap and…its basically free loot for filling a bar, for running around capping things which gives more free loot, while zerging mobs that give free loot….in a zone build for free clockwise free loot…

You clearly don’t understand the issue at hand,which is completing a task that takes Months to complete ( Talking WvW,not the pve champtrain thats called Eotm ) and his reward for doing this was 2 greens.When completing such tasks the reward should be of more significance and not based on RNG random drops you can find anywhere else.Every other Mmo out there understands this,Anet on the other hand does not and keeps handing out rewards,simple or hard based on RNG,and you might end up getting nothing but greens.You might end up getting a better reward for something that takes 30m to complete opposed to what the OP described..a thing that takes months to complete and end up with..a green,which is simply wrong.

You clearly didn’t understand what I said then. Getting X rank is not a task, it is something that progresses naturally by completing other smaller tasks. These smaller tasks provide loot, and after completing several of these tasks (did I mention they give loot?) you get extra loot because a little bar filled.

People complaining about this, cannot possibly know how to weigh reward to effort, they value their time far more than they value their capabilities, that is the fundamental flaw with the reward system.

If Ranks had some challenge, or feat of skill involved…like I said in my post, sure, the rewards should be better….but its extra loot on top of loot you get for completing things that add to that blue bar….that is it.

I became Gold Invader tonight. In almost 1400 ranks I got 2 ascended rings (one of which has zerker stats, the other is useless), a few exotics (10-15?) and rares (I’d say maybe one every 10 ranks on average?).

The other day I did a few PVE world events to gather some money. In about 2 hours I got about 10 rares and 2 exotics just spamming autoattack…

The reward level from WvW is abysmal.

And what do you do in www and eotm ? Spam same auto attack. Zerglet.

S/D does more damage, the auto chain hits way harder it also has more uptime since you do not have to move behind the target and can reengage much faster after dodge.

You never ever in any conceivable situation in this game will match sword damage with daggers over a longer time frame.

When it comes solely to pure single target dps, nothing can match 6/6/2 D/D. 2 in shadow arts for infusion of shadows so u can CnD and backstab as soon as revealed is off and keep your initiative over 6 at all times while doing it. There is no reason to pick S/D instead S/P for pve, except boon steal. S/P will do same dps with autoatacks and pistol whip has much longer evade frame then S/D 3333. S/P also offers good defiant stacks cleaner.

Strong/berserker gear and S/P + Shortbow. Trait into Dark arts and then Critical strikes first to max out your damage. S/P 5 blinds mobs making you almost immune to melee damage. S/P 3 is stun + evade with high damage and works wonderful with signet of malice to top off your HP. (aswell as shortbow 2 detonated before it lands). Facetank everything 1-80.

Mix zerker, cav, and valk. The general build is 2/6/6. I use scholar runes.

You don’t want to go full zerk or full valk. You want to have some armor there, at around or above 2.5k. Health to me doesn’t matter AS much, because I have guard stacks in WvW.

Now why would you use scholar in anything but full burst build. Critter humping your leg is enough to drop your health down to <90%.

I’d say you should be looking at a different class if that’s what you want.

That being said 5-6-0-3-0 is always stable, and I suppose you can just stick to d/p or s/p along with a shortbow. If you’re doing d/p you probably want the healing spell that rolls backwards and has a 15 sec cooldown, for s/p the healing signet might be ok. Power or extra movement speed signet + smoke screen + shadow refuge should be fairly solid.

When I’m doing something for the first time (like a dungeon path I’ve never done), I find myself switching to d/p because I’m more comfortable with it.

D/P for dungeons. Now I have seen all stupid things thieves can do in dungeons.

I don’t think foods should be usable in WvW. They only seem to add more balancing issues and power creep which tend to fall on changing classes instead of the foods themselves.

Some specific foods, such as condition duration boosters or negators, can single handedly make a spec too powerful, such as anti-condition warriors (they can become virtually immune to cripple, chilled, and immobilize) or, in the case of a cd booster, many condition based builds.

I think a simple fix to many of these problems would just be to remove foods from WvW in their entirety. It may cause a slight decrease in build variety, but overall, it’s worth it.

I actually meant to write a guide about this and im so glad you made this thread. To lower the lag you get from the server you need to change your item build as something in your build is casuing lag.

If you play p/d for example the lag should go away, or try cvhanging the set of runes you have equiped. Worked wonders when i tried

Hello all, what do u think about adding some gearcheck option for party leader, that he could see every gear piece of his team members? Its verrrry annoying now, because ppl dont care about description and they join your team anyway…sorry for my english

Reanimator was merged with a GM trait and it actually makes sense this way. The trait, Death Nova, originally caused your minions (and yourself when downed) to explode upon death. With it being merged with Reanimator, you can spawn minions by yourself so they can explode.

Assuming Anet noticed this thread and decided to merge this trait with a major trait in Shadow Arts, which major trait would you like Last Refuge to be with?

Infusion of shadows. I never take it anyways, but at least open the door to something new for the 1 point minor trait.

While those 2 necro traits merging made sense, none of SA trait merge with LR would make sense. Why ? Cause LR would still function as it does now.

Yes, but it would be a major trait and therefore in our control in whether or not we wanted to slot it. I love the SA trait just for 2 points (condi removal being the most common one I take), I just hate knowing LR can proc at a bad time and get me killed which it has numerous times.

I would not pick Infusion of shadows if it had LR paired with it

You have shadow refuge which stacks stealth up to 12-16 seconds… You have blind powder (group stealth) and hide in shadows which will stealth you (or increase your current stealth timer) for extra 3-4s, you have smoke screen (and Offhand pistol 5 – black powder) which is smoke field and once you use leap finishers (heartseeker for example) through smoke field you get 3 seconds of personal stealth that is stackable indefinately as long as you have enough initiative to leap and smoke fields on the ground. Same can be done with blast finishers (Cluster bomb or any other blast finisher) for group stealth effect that is also stackable.

need help with heartseeker

No problem with the skill it self, but very often wen i use this to travel, escape or chase. My character suddenly turns around making me heartseeker to my death. This has also blown my stealth cover plently of times. I’ve alrdy checked, and it isn’t anything like auto-targeting. the only way ive found to prevent this is waiting to do the next heartseeker when i can walk after performing the last one. Any idea how to solve this tough?

This is affected by terrain. if terrain you are heartseeking on is not perfectly flat, you will most likely start heartseeking backwards.

Well, after a nice run in lv28 for daily, we ended with Mai Trin and wasted 1hour 30mins wiping on this now-impossible boss!

Her shadowstep alone took 90% my hp!!! Other abilities were dealing 50-60% of my hp and that is without even being hit by a single sword swing from her or any bleeds.

This killed the group, and after 2hours in fractals, the group disbanded and now I cannot complete the 20+ fractals if we get Mai Trin.

Please resolve this!

I dont know what was patched, but in any case if you are getting hit by shadowstep means someone in your group is ranging. Do not range.
