Don’t get me started on pve……how many thieves you see running the harder pve dungeons/high level fractals??? ok, yeah, there is a reason for that.

Do you even play GW2? Most experienced parties require a minimum of 1 thief. Its incredibly rare for my usual groups to not have at least 1 thief at all times during dungeon tours. And usually we have 2 just to boost group DPS through the roof.

And as for Anet playing thieves, they don’t. Awhile back there was a livestream for the fractured update. Anet had a group of 5 trying to do the story fractal. They had 1 thief. He camped p/p the entire run and didn’t use any of his utilities throughout the entire livestream. He was a prime example of Anet’s experience with their own dungeons/fractals.

Sadly, but LFG pugging says different story (not saying that you are not correct about thiefs dps, since there are no dps calculators i will not argue). Most parties require warriors for dps, many times myself got kicked from party even before entering dungeon or asked to relog to warrior just because I play a thief. Lately was even kicked from fractal party after first boss kill, with a claim that I “don’t meet groups dps requirements” (while running full zerker 25/30/0/0/15 and ofc melee) when groups dps was much lower then average pug group dps, simply because thieves are widely considered as a weak link. Low dps ? must be because of thief.

I assure you, the utilities thieves have are second to none in terms of survivability, and comparing thief to Ele is not that wise atm. However, I must admit that warriors are definitely easier to play and Thieves get constant nerves every patch.

Every dungeon speed run will take ele instead of thief in a blink of an eye. “READ FIRST: only Guardian/warrior/ele, others will be kicked” <—- looks familiar ? Yes thats how our LFG looks like.

Hi I’m just curious….I recently came back to the game after a long break and was going over some of the changes that I had missed in the recent patches and all I can say is….wow. Majorly nerfed damage…no added survival to account for it. Hard to Catch? Assassin’s Reward? wtf? Does anyone at anet even play a thief? I understand some players in wvw get frustrated fighting thieves because they don’t understand the class or how to counter so they QQ about stealth needing nerfed or more damage reductions etc. But wow Anet….ever try playing as a thief?
Anyone that seriously plays a thief realizes that stealth/dodge-evade is pretty much our sole means of survival. Limited condition removal, low hp/toughness. Lack of good utility choices (Shadowstep, SR, Blinds are basically it) forces us into a corner. We need high dps or we die or more survival/utility. How you gonna take both away? LOL
No wonder so many thieves stay cheese perma-stealthed or spam evades…..it’s all they can do.
Ele’s will say, well they have low HP and lower toughness. But come on, the utility Ele’s get are second to none. Cantrips, Auras, Chill, Knockbacks, Regen, Vigor, burst heals, condition removals, high mobility. All while doing good dps even without going full zerker.

I wont comment about pvp side, cause it will always be countered by “Thief OP, pls nurf”. But speaking of pve… thief has 10805 default HP, warrior has 18372 HP while arguably doing better dps. While warrior brings close to perma if not perma fury and banners to support whole groups dps, thief brings … group stealth… which in pug runs usually gets completely ignored since every class has means to rush through most of skipable content on their own. Only “good” group support utility we have is smokescreen to reflect projectiles, but guardians do that better. Gw2 pve even if not intended has holy trinity and thief is not included. Its guardian(Defensive support), Elementalist(offensive support) and warrior(dps while running with 2x more hp then thief has).

Don’t want to be a deal breaker, but this is basic p/d 0/0/30/20/20.

So you’re basically saying what’s the point? Either way I’m screwed. In that case I’d imagine it’s situational. You and Karolis are giving different examples of it being implemented though, or rather, he’s thinking of it more in an offensive fashion and you are thinking of it in a defensive fashion.
Offensively, it seems it would allow more damage to be done at the cost of a longer wait to do anything else

Defensively, if you had no utilites to follow up, it would seem worthless and potentially ruin you as you won’t have a CnD to chain stealth to wait off a CD, if I understood you correctly?

Actually i am looking at this defensively. That CnD from borrowed initiative may give you time to get some distance while stealthed and even maybe buy enough time for some utilities to get off cooldown to save your kitten . All im trying to say that this wouldn’t be a nerf in no possible way.

I don’t really agree with this change. Being a thief since release, I know initiative is hard to manage, especially with dagger/dagger, and ESPECIALLY without at least 15 in trickery, which, in WvW for a burst thief I believe you could use that for a different tree. While this negative initiative idea may seem like a buff, I see it as a nerf.
Let me explain. (This is mostly a WvW standpoint) Thieves MUST preserve cooldowns to survive. If you run out of cooldowns, you’re stuck with 2 CnD’s, and then you die after the use. Here’s where the negative initiative comes in. Let’s say you have very low initiative and you CnD. You’re making it so that you have to use your utilities to stay alive and stealth, because us thieves are very squishy and stealth is our salvation. After we use our utilities, we have nothing but CnD, which takes half our initiative right there. So after you CnD, you CnD again, which will leave you with close to none initiative, even with initiative regen. So you use negative initiative to stealth one last time. You can’t stealth again, and you’re screwed. A thief out of stealth is an incredibly easy target, especially without utilities.
Plus, I think this is basically just adding more initiative if you really think about it. But this is just my opinion, you guys feel free to agree or disagree.

If you have to chose between having 0 initiative and dieing because of it ( lets assume your utilities are already used) and you are sitting (running) duck like it is right now and having that ability to “borrow” extra initiative to survive, why in kittens name wouldn’t you do that. You will have to use your stealth utilities when u don’t have enough initiative to stealth anyway. With this change you would simply get more breathing space knowing that even if u will fk up and leave yourself with not enough initiative, you will still be able to stealth using borrowed ini.
And its not a “hidden buff”, its OBVIOUS buff. I have no clue how would someone present it as a nerf.

I think what Travlene posted was spot on, there should not be any further discussion. You mentioned thieves ability to spam, and he countered what you said by saying we don’t, EVERYONE else does. As Travlene mentioned — one can easily see this by comparing the amount of attacks a thief can dish out in 10 seconds, versus any other class. By adding in the ‘negative int’ phase for a thief, you’re only reducing the amount of skills we can use by a larger amount.

If you’re a veteran thief you should know better than you suggest this, or even think it’s a great idea to implement.

How would it reduce the amount of skills you can get off with your initiative if it actually adds one more skill to it. Only difference from having actual bigger initiative pool is that you have to w8 till that borrowed initiative is returned. So when it comes to spam that you are afraid to lose, you actually would be able to spam even more with this until you get into “burn out state” (use more initiative then you actually have).

Well in my playstyle I see it a s a buff. If i will run out of initiative and I need to “borrow” that initiative to get that CnD off or die, I will borrow it. For a 222 or 333 spammer who mindlessly spams it till he cant anymore… well he will be able to pull off one more 222 or 333, but then will have to starve a bit longer till his 222 or 333 spam will provide one more flashy animation.
Imagine it as a loan that you have to give back once you earn back enough money, instead of buying something.

Hm, good point, I would think the “nerf” here is that, how things work currently, if I am out of initiative, I would need to wait a minimum of two seconds to at least use HS, with the NI implemented, I would need to wait six seconds worst case scenario to use any move. It seems like a trade off actually but even still six seconds is rather long I think.

Well but currently if you have 1 initiative left you cant use anything at all and with that negative initiative system you would be able to fit in one last move (CnD for example to stealth and start running to regenerate your initiative). This would be nothing but a buff.
I mean … as a thief you always gotta manage your initiative and this would only get into play if you failed at that or you just had to overextend into negative initiative to get that kill or survive.

All these ppl that say that some speed boost (including fleet shadow) doesn’t work in combat or is less effective in combat miss out the fact that actual in combat speed is slower. You don’t lose the bonus speed you are getting from runes/traits/boons, you lose your actual default speed.

What backstab needs is a huge reduction in damage. The 10% crit dmg reduction incoming isn’t enough. Thieves need 25% damage reduction to get them in the realm of being realistically balanced. With mobility and stealth, Thieves should be hitting the lightest, not the hardest.

The class has been the golden child of the Devs since launch and it still shows.

Ascended things take work to make and a lot of materials. 10,000 badges takes 1-2 months to get so it makes sense that 1 months hard work goes toward 1 ascended.

Arena net has always promised its players max level gear will be available to everyone no matter what game type they enjoy. People do not enjoy the crafting game type it is very boring and tedious (like the day lies before they got changed).

Everything you currently need to craft ascended gear drops in www. There’s even crafting stations in citadel. Suck it up.

And I fully agree, same for warriors mobility and healing signet, also for pu mesmers. What I dont agree is when player w/o any actual ability to play a game comes to forums and starts saying this op that op (in this situation he don’t even claim it being op, its just annoying for him so has to be nerfed).

This paragraph has no relevance to the argument you’re trying to make. I kill rangers like you on a daily basis, but that’s also irrelevant to a discussion about stealth.

Zerker ranger has it’s place in WvW. That place is in the back of a group, focusing squishy targets, laying down AoE cripple, and providing water fields for group healing. If you’re not in a group, you’re in a tower. If you’re in a 1v1 with a thief, a class designed to kill things like you, you’re out of position and deserve to be killed.

Unfortunately for you, this simply does not help because I do not HAVE to engage you in WvW. I move faster than you because I build for mobility and you use 2 bows. There’s nothing stopping me from just walking off and leaving you be. Or from using my mobility to bait out your cooldowns, then killing you when you’re defenseless. Most importantly, however, this is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to a discussion of stealth in WvW.

Before you just dismiss me as talking nonsense again, let’s talk experience here. I have 1800 hours experience on thief, primarily playing WvW. You play zerker ranger in PvP, with little experience of WvW. If you disagree with me, fine, but if you want to convince me that I’m wrong then try bringing an actual argument next time.

stop talking trash. seriously. i play both spirit ranger and zerker ranger in tpvp. do you even know that a zerker ranger is also underpowered in tpvp? it takes guts and skills to play that build effectively. you have no knowledge about tpvp at all. meta-builds in tpvp are hambow/condi warriors, spirit ranger, bunker guardian, condi/minion master necro and bunker engi. why don’t you try to play your class in tpvp and see how fast you’d get pawned there. the reason you play thief only in “wvw” is because you know it’s overpowered there. people in tpvp don’t even care about thieves. thieves are almost useless in tpvp. people who succeed as thieves in tpvp are really good and know how to play their class really well while people who play thief in wvw are braindead players who continue to abuse stealth and call themselves skillful. pfff…

me having played tpvp in a long time helped me a lot in killing thieves in wvw 1v1. seriously, you arent one of those professions that i would avoid facing 1v1. you cant nuke me with conditions and i can use knockback to avoid your heartseeker spams. i can also dps you to death in seconds before you can react. so dont go tell me l2p because i dont have any problem dealing with your class. what i’m asking here is a nerf to you stealth spamming ability because it is broken and should not exist in this game. get over yourself.

Soloing a camp is no measure of skill in WvW, any class can do it with little effort if built correctly. As for playing what everyone else plays, keep reading.

i’ve played my class in spvp/tpvp long enough to get it effective in wvw. seriously, i treat a thief as i treat an ele. just another loot bag i can take for free. the percentage of me winning against a thief 1v1 in wvw is like 90% wins. what i dont like about them is that when they are outnumbered they can easily disengage through spamming an insane number of stealths.

From what I can see of your build in the video, you have 30 in marksmanship, and likely 30 in skirmishing. With dual bows, you have no mobility and no real counter to a thief that gets up in your grill. You win because you engage at distance, probably sniping someone as he fights someone else, using the fact you have the highest 1500 range dps in the game.

Having watched your video, It’s actually laughable being called no skill from someone who plays like that. Bad/glassy thieves might die, but a well played thief will take you apart.

you people should not treat rangers like they are really that bad. i once killed 2 thieves 1 mesmer with the help of a single ranger ally. you guys have been fighting a lot of bad rangers too much.

The reason that people say rangers are bad is because 90% of them run your build, and in WvW that basically makes them cannon fodder. They come fresh from PvE and PvP, expecting things to just stay at distance whilst you kill them. Unfortunately it’s you that’s playing what everyone else does, making yourself the proverbial scrub.

I don’t want to be harsh, but there’s really no other way of saying it.

The one question I have head the most when playing in WvW is how can He/She hide for so long, not that I find the fact that someone can hide for so long unfair, If they have built there player that way so be it, What really seams wrong to me is once that player has entered combat He/She is able to hide again with-out leaving the area even whilst He/She is being hit, In my opinion that is so unrealistic and in some ways spoils what is a very good game, if the player had to move out of melee range before He/She could stealth again after entering combat I think it would be far more realistic this would still give a good stealth build the opportunity to hide in a camp but even then if they have been found by other player searching and taken damage they should have to move out of melee rage before being able to hide again. I myself have just seen a fight where one stealth player who was able to out fight 6 other players for over 15 minutes and even revive someone just inside the gate at Mendon’s Tower in Eternal Battlegrounds

You know that for all stealth weapons sets except one (D/P) you actually have to get into melee range and hit your target successfully to stealth, right? Well what am I thinking, ofc you don’t.

I was solo roaming in WvW with my ele. I don’t usually have many problems killing stuff: coyotes, skelks, yaks, and sentries go down really fast and don’t cause much problems.

However, everytime I find a thief, no matter what, I just die. And the problem is, I can’t even see him!
I just go around, then bam! Dead! I got hit by 18k spikes out of nowhere. And when I see the thief in front of me and I manage to avoid his attack, he will just go in stealth in another gimmicky way and backstab me from behind! I can’t even use my heal, because his burst is on a 0s CD!

I seriously hope Anet will fix stealth because at the moment it’s just too much. I get killed sometimes by zerker rangers, but at least I can see them and if I get killed it’s because they are good (their bear hits really hard and must require a lot of micromanagement to be effective!). But when it comes to thieves, it’s just 0 risk, 101% reward, go stealth kill people #yolomode

Change A and D to strafe left and right. Bind your utillities, change your 1-5 f1-4 if you arent comfortable reaching it on the move, learn to move around using wasd+mouse instead of using A and D to turn your character. MMORPG basics.

I use the basic keybinds. Q and E to strafe, A and D to turn, etc. I use 1-5 for the weapon attacks, and I click on the 6-0 slots if I need to use them. If I lose a fight, I’m either outplayed, or it’s one of those close moments where one of us gets a Deus Ex Machina.

Yes I did. Thats why i started using keybinds. And i dont recall myself ever using A and D as turn left and right, maybe except when playing Doom or Wolfenstein without a mouse controls.

not only it is a stun breaker but it’s also an effective way to dps someone to death before he can react. i’m sure you’ve seen that on my video when i depleted more than half of the engi’s health in just a couple of seconds.

Thieves are fine in all aspects of the game and in truth are UP in many facets of the game.

do you even know how strong an engi is 1v1? lol. try play a zerker ranger and fight an engi and lets see how well you fare.

btw, thief is not UP. thief is the only class that can use a power build and still have high survivability and insane damage.

You don’t need a gaming mouse or any kind of macros in this game – . You can keybind your skills in game options. Your welcome.

After consideration I took away the soldiers backpiece and changed some other pieces out. I will do a 3.0 when the patch comes where you can see all the changes

Well its simple – all parts berserker. And 25/30/0/0/15 will still do more dmg unless you can stay at the back of enemy at all times and keep your initiative high. 25/30/0/0/15 dmg wont start dropping as long as you have 6 initiative.
