D/P good, the rest weak

D/D and D/P has its own uses. At least for me D/D works much better when there are lots of targets around. D/P In those situations feels too clunky. Lately I started running D/P as offset to my D/D, although I rarely do more then 1 hs through same BP, unless I have really kitten up and have to rejuvenate. Basically D/P works better for melee opponents – warriors, guardians, other thieves by keeping them blinded as much as possible instead of “BP+HS+HS+HS+repeat and sit in stealth till full or even use your stealth uptime to reset fight and attack only when you see some target low on hp like a kitten that you are”.

Really ? This thread again ? It is a PvP zone, PvP happens in PvP zones. There are several other way to complete the achievement that do not include JP’s.

First it is a WvW zone if it were PvP I would not see so many nerf food, dire op, and assorted WvW isolated complaints.

Onto the main topic anywhere there are both Jumping Puzzles (and achievement for completing them) and the potential for Players to conflict with each other there will be people that will want to camp them.

First of all WvW=PvP. Google what PvP means and stop thinking that PvP means gw2 spvp/tpvp game mode.

With the release of the new Season, the amount of people in the OS JP trolling one another has increased. IT has gone from ganking people, to spawn camping. I am making this to remind people about the OS JP etiquette. I believe some level of respect should be shown in the JP. Let’s try and keep some class, and have fun. Fighting is saved for EBG, BL, EtoM, and the GvG arena.

- If others don’t attack you, don’t attack them
- If you see another being trolled, help them (even if they are from another server)
- Offer Mes ports if you can

Let’s respect one another, for honor is important.

Azukas, D/P thieves are the only thieves I cannot counter easily, every other weaponset I have a counter prepared for.

Than you need to learn how to play instead of going on this nerf D/P crusade. Pick it up for a few weeks and I bet you’ll find out quickly how to counter one.

This brought to mind something…you keep saying there’s counters, but I’ve never seen you give them. Please put a video here showing some of the Thief versus thief counters against D/P, that way I can see what I’m doing wrong. Of course, if you can’t…it COULD mean you’re just whiteknighting when you know there’s no counter to it. But that would be foolish.

Sure thing doc. Use x/P yourself and interrupt their HS through BP.

Before you ask, yes I intentionally left 40 trait points unused and 2 utility slots empty. Consider it a handicap so you’re on an even playing field with every other class (except PU mes and Warriors).

You forgot to unequip offhand weapon and trinkets then.

One very effective Psychological tactic to use is juking. Thieves are a king of juke moves.

One thing I some times do is drop an SR and shadow step away from it to create a gap. Some times I drop SR to force an Elementalist to cast AoE on it so I can sneak behind them while they are channeling their skill.

To make them think that I’m staying inside SR and see them blow all their knockbacks but nothing is coming out is priceless.

You lose stealth if you leave SR early.

Only if you enter SR in first place… doh…

30/10/0/0/30 Carrion/Rampager gear with poison utils, earth sigil and withdraw/basilisk/Runes of Lyssa.

Compleeeetely different playstyle. 20+ bleeds on a target + poison, torment, weakness, immobilize and decent physical damage on top. This is what anet was thinking of when they made the D/D set.

Its not the developers that decide how class should be played, but players. D/D has CnD that opens up backstab. It wasn’t created for 333 spam.

When i saw the hype about this blog posts, i was hyped because “finally, maybe it’s this time PvE will get changes to help fix the many issues we face right now”.

Oh lord, we were wrong.

When i saw the “No More Repair Costs” i did not understood, i mean:
- They remove the punishment to players when they die.
- Yet they still punish their players with Mad Waypoint costs when we try to help our friends/guildies with their new chars/stories/quests/events….

One minor but major change they could make is a 50% discount waypoint cost to areas we already 100%, so we do not need to think twice when a friend is asking for help in a area where it’s costing up to 4 silver to travel to.

Maybe, on the last posts of friendly play we can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Oh my God! I just spent 4 silvers on wp! Im so broke now!

The diference of GW2’s stealth vs any other decent games is others games mechanics has detections and counter stealth.

GW2 just has a perma spameable invisibility.

As well as dodge/cc mechanics that counters stealth. As well as non targeted attacks that can hit stealthed targets – other games with conventional stealth do not have that (besides very few untargeted aoe abilities). As well as insane power creep and low passive defences of stealth classes compared to most other games, what enables ppl simply kill stealthed targets in a matter of seconds.

oh, thanks, you know your mechanics and I respect that, I play Aion for past 5 years. I have a month of work so I intend to get as far as I can with this thief. Any other newbie advice that you can think of would be sweet. After all I am on my 2nd day.

Don’t get stuck with one weapon set – try all out at least to know what each weapon set is capable off. In the end however, you will settle with sword/pistol and shortbow because its simply the best for open world pve purposes :P

Shadowshot keeps me from taking any damage as long as I refresh it. I just tried sword pistol and I take on much more damage. I am low level.

S/P nr 3 is a full evade (the damage part, not the stun part) while doing high cleave damage. S/P 5 completely negates melee (and ranged if you know how to break line of sight) damage by blinding mobs for 5s while damaging mobs with auto attacks that also cleaves up to 3 targets. If you insist on playing D/P then its nr 5 ability is same as S/P 5 – blind field that completely negates all mobs damage in melee range (but dagger attacks do no cleave). Oh and btw if you are new player. IF you use D/P 5 and then leap through it with 2 then you get stealthed and gain access to backstab.

For sake of Elvis… do not use d/p and do not spec shadow arts (specially full) for pve. That build that Barock linked shouldnt be used in pve, but pvp. Best all around weapons for solo pve are Sword+pistol (because it cleaves, has built in evade and smoke field) and shortbow. For exploration you want to put points in deadly arts and critical strikes and use full dps gear(strong, berserker at higher levels). For zerg pve that happens during living story for example should chose tankier gear and/or spec more into survival lines such as acrobatics. In pve Stealth is useful only for skipping mobs, taking vistas, points of interest etc etc and that can be achieved with shadow refuge and/or blasting shortbow 2 into smoke screen (smoke field).

Are you sure it was your elite skill that caused it? You don’t perchance use Staff as a DPS weapon, or use cleric’s/pvt gear and 0/0/30/30/10 AH build, do you?

Ahaha :P I run full zerkers GS, Hammer, Sceptre/Focus for ranged and hybrid tank/dmg traits (can’t remember what exactly). But one of them asked, “who’s dogs were they” after we killed one of the bosses, and as soon as I said “mine” they kicked me.
Renewed Focus is what I thought I probably should use, but for fun I use HoB. Is it really that bad, I rarely die anyway so don’t see the need for RF most of the time?

proc HP steals galore

doing 8k-15k unloads + thousands of HP heal + AOE dmg + hp steals + ranged and much much more.

only the cliffside boss is hard with p/p bc of reflection ability. other than that its great. especially at the molten bosses.

s/p is ok too but i find it a little more risky bc it puts you in harms way for the same damage and less healing and less chance at rally if u need it. range is always better in fractals.

Oh hey now… S/P does way more damage then p/p in aoe and single target fights. Pistol whip is 10-15 % stronger then unload (including pistol mastery on p/p)+and you cant even compare sword auto attack and pistol auto attack. + Sword cleaves by default.

Why? Just move them to the waiting area of spvp if needs must. There is zero point to them being in wvw.

Perhaps replace them with bank and guild bank… that’s what I use them the most for – but there is no need to be crafting inside wvw.

Yes there is a point of crafting stations in wvw. To make you zerglets sit in queues longer.

Anet told us Berserker will be nerfed. Hands down, nothing big will change in PvE. However, im wondering whether Berserker or Assassin or a mix of both will result in most dps. Im currently full Berserker and would be really kittened if I had to craft for Assassin.

The more crit chance you have the more crit damage nerf affects your dps. So Assassin gear is getting hit harder then berserker.

Not exactly this, but I suggested a long time ago that all weapons sheathe on back. They look extremely ugly on the sides. Certain armours make them look even worse because of the angle of the armour where the weapons are held. Some end up facing away from your leg at a 45 degree angle and it’s such an eye sore.

All weapons should be sheathed on backs, even dual wielded weapons. Crossed Swords on back etc.

Especially dual wielded weapons!

First of all Dev don’t respond to any class forum, so is not that they ignore thf, they ignore every 1.

you got to keep in mind that GW2 is a game that is open to the public (that’s what no monthly charges mean) because of this the majority of the players , like about 80% of population are bad player nothing but slacker that hate to learn but feel that a video game should be something easy b/c anything that require some research and learning means is a job not a game.

Il give you a list of bad player on this game

1) PPl who think zerk build are the only way to play. why do they think this? because lets them kill a boss so fast that they don’t need to learn how to avoid getting hit

2) ppl who think warrior and guardian are the only way to run dungeon. why do they think this? because it lets them take a few hit with out the need to move and still survive

3) ppl who yell stack on every fight. Why do they think this? because they saw a video on youtube and they think it most be require.

Btw, there is a boss in SE p3 that require for you to stack, and not because players came up with that to make it easier by removing some of his attacks or making adds come into cleave/aoe range instead of wiping whole of your dungeon group, but because they made him that way. Some food for your thought.
I’ll add one more to your list:

  • Bad players are those who refuse to do things the most efficient way (ppl try to do stuff efficiently in every single game there is).
    Its not the developers that decide how the game is ment to be played (in this case dungeons) – its the players who do and ppl will always strive to do things the most efficient way.

Actually, people in LFG only ask for Eles on AC. They traditionally ask for Guard, Warrior and Mesmer.

Either way, compared to other team comps, that’s subpar.

Ok, make it Guardian/Warrior/Mesmer if u wish, I believe everyone gets the picture. And it doesn’t matter if its subpar or not, its the way our general LFG community is. Thieves, Rangers, Engineers and necros are more then often looked down upon.

It’s just boring is all. It’s like cheat mode, and it’s no different then when people stand on tree branches and switch on auto attack. This game wasn’t “made around stacking” , you nerds who need to do things the most efficient way because god forbid that dungeon isn’t completed 5 minutes faster, you guys made it that way. I assume it was for the toughness boost.
I didn’t make the build lol. The main thing was the acrobatics,
as I was zerging a lot at low levels and the speed boost when dodging
and speed boost when killing a foe, on top of the speed runes and sigils and
Signet of Shadows made him finally fun to play and much less frustrating.

I want to use S/P+SB
I want to be able to PvE solo level (not worried about
dungeons or PvP) mostly by killing hearts and zone completion, events etc.
I want to have high surviveability and speed boosts
so it isn’t so slow, painful, boring and frustrating. I SUCK at stealthy stuff so… yeah.
Not sure what else I should put…. hmmm….

Oh here is a good thing to mention I suppose. Please remember this may not be the BEST setup but it is my play-style and what I am comfortable with and enjoy most so.. yeah. Anyway my utilities are so far (since I don’t have the dagger storm yet obviously)
Hide in Shadows (not sure if that is best heal for me?), Signet of Shadows (indispensable), Caltrops (indispensable) Scorpion Wire (MEGA indispensable) and Thieves Guild. As you can see, I am so hung up on those utilities it is hard for me to consider anything else. At very low level, Scorpion Wire is the ONE skill that saved my butt enough for me to consider playing him again. No more face pulling groups of mobs; yank one out without aggroing the others, kill it, move to next. LOVE it.

If I were you (well i was in your shoes while doing world exploration with thief) I would just put trait points into deadly arts first and then whats left into critical strikes if using S/P and Shortbow (and the best weapons for leveling/exploration ). Gear is all berserker (“strong” (?) in lower levels). Traits: Mug and Sundering strikes in deadly arts, I would chose mug first. No point in going more then 25 points for deadly arts once you get exposed weakness (this works well with sundering strikes which applies vulnerability on crits). In critical strikes you should chose practiced tolerance and maybe critical haste or Furious retaliation, Executioner once you get 30 points. Once you get that its either 15 points in Trickery and Thrill of the crime or 15 points in acrobatics for some extra dodges. For utilities its very situational, but you cant go wrong with signet of shadows when doing world exploration. Signet of agility for some damage boost and condition clearing if you get some nasty burns, cripples or too much bleed stacks. For the last place I would switch around anything that is required for situation like shadow refuge for grabing skill points, vistas and not having to fight mobs that are guarding it. Dagger storm mainly for elites, switch to thieves guild if you want some more damage on veterans/skill point challenges. For heals : Signet of malice works very well with pistol whip on lots of mobs, same as cluster bombs when you explode it just before it hits the ground (It heals for every hit on every target, so if you have 5 mobs in front of you pistol whip will heal for 9×5xwhatever you signet of malice power is at that level), but for exploration anything will do, you can change around according to situation.
Oh and about pulling out single mobs with scorpion wire – you can do that if you like it, but its really not needed. With S/P you can face tank all the grouped mobs you can encounter with pistol whip (tooltip don’t say that, but second part of skill is an evade) or with blinding powder+ auto attacks.

The charakter speed is limit to 400 in/s.
So, what do you try to tell us?

He just toled us (and proved) that wiki entry that claims "
Fleet Shadow bonus to movement speed is only 33% when in combat" is false. Which is obvious knowing that its ~33% out of combat because of speed cap, but still many ppl fail to understand that when you enter combat your speed gets reduced and that gives trait more space to work with not reaching the speed cap.

I thought we passed the whole discussion on D/D and D/P, guess I was wrong…

Actually D/P has situations where its better then D/D and D/D has situations where its better then D/P. As for example D/D will perform better when there is lots of targets, but that usually happens when fighting people with lower level of skill that aren’t aware how stuff works, so D/D is superior in those situations. We (X/D thieves) have a bug in our kitten about D/P because set on itself is direct counter to x/D set because of so much blinds simply shut down our own ability to stealth while D/P can ignore blinds and stealth all he wants. Same skill level D/P player will always defeat D/D. Also gotta mention that D/P has double Shadows embrace and shadow rejuvenation ticks every 3 s for every leap through smoke field u did and that I consider a bug.

Were you running glass, were you upleveled, were you tanky, etc. These are important questions man, very important.

Dude, you can answer to all these 3 questions only looking at deffensive stats I posted. (no-no-yes if you can’t figure it out).

You posted armor rating, vitality, boon duration, and healing power. 3/4 of that tells me nothing. If I saw Toughness instead of armor rating, it would tell me everything. Somebody said it earlier up, why were you using just pistol and bomb? Throw grenades, use Elixir S, Supply Crate his kitten .

OMFG! are you serious!? hes an engineer and complaining. ive played 5 days on my engineer and have only lost 1v1 to a thief ONCE…and it was bc i fumbled. engineer NEVER should lose to thief. i run RAMPAGERS…..no toughness. no healing. just rampagers and p/s 20 – 20 – 0 – 30 – 0

It’s everything cool and flowers in theory, but when your hp goes to the bottom in just 3 hits (which apparently weren’t his strongest) there’s not much you can do beside doing best to heal up. The pistol skill is a chain, which i was already chanelling. Bomb was from dodge.
To make it clear: Thief had absolutely no food buffs, no bloodlust stacks and no might stacks when he attacked. Neither was he using power signet.

youhave to react. if u dont …well thats your fault. any class can melt a zerg/ramp/valk in seconds.

as an engineer let me suggest things that are in my build

We have active defenses, means tankynes is useless if you can just dodge that damage. Obviously zerk gear is the way to go for pve then.

you will most likely hurt him more then he can hurt you. … but no.. “perma stealth” rant just because it’s easyer than actualy using your brain

you cant perma stealth anymore with 15 in SA..since december 10th without using all stealth utilities..and even then you have about 90% uptime on stealth…and you literaly can’t do anything else cause you have so save initaitive for next combo field blast or leaps. stop being ignorant

You’re right. You also need 15 in trickery. 15 SA, 15 Trickery.

just 4 HS into BP and you can easily maintain permastealth.

BP and 4 HS costs:
3*4 + 6 =18 Ini – 2 for Infusion of Shadow = 16 Ini.
Stealth for 4s*4=16s.

Current ini regen is 1 ini/1s

Initiative cost and Initiative regen match up.

Therefore, you can permasteath.

SA 15 don’t affect stealth that comes from combos. So Hs through smoke field = 3s.

The Thief is not op the stealth in this game is broken. It is why this game will never be taken seriously and why you will only every see Stealth Mesmers/Thiefs if they ever implement duels.

Much like in Guild Wars 1 where you only saw player Assassins in Hero Battles. Also, if a death match mode is every put into this game I can almost say that the vast majority of the teams would be 1 Guardian/4 Thieves or 1 Guardian/4 Mesmers.

Stealth is broken and everyone knows it. The only reason why other Thieves and Mesmers don’t complain about it is because they have it.

They stealth you dodge their ridiculously predicable attack… you gain nothing. They are still stealthed and you are down one dodge and their backstab skill is already off cool down. You block their backstab you gain nothing, they are still in stealth and their skill is off cool down. You have very nearly killed them, they stealth and basically that is “gg” unless you happen to get lucky and guess which way he ran.

The Thief players are not good and the class itself is mediocre. It is stealth that is the problem. All the pro players (which have left by the way) suggested scrapping this horrible system of stealth and placing something in the game that takes skill and has counters.

As of right now there are only two true counters to stealth. One is a bought item only usable with WvW supply while the other is a ranger skill with a natural cool down of 40 seconds for 4 seconds of revel and can only be used on a Thief before he stealth.

Can’t counter stealth? How about dodging CnD? How about interrupting HS when used inside smoke field?<—————-That is stealth counters, not a stealth trap or sic’em.

Red’s second post in one day, I’ve gone rampant.

I was helping someone out the other day learning the class and they said that Thieves Guild is honestly one of the best elites in the game. While debatable, from a learning PoV, I agree. But as I’ve “grown” (Sylvari thief too so there’s a joke in there somewhere), I’ve started using elites like Basilisk Venom and Daggerstorm more. Heck I even tried the Druid Spirit once (don’t). But as I looked back, those two thieves have really helped me out through thick and thin when there were even no other players around to help me. One time they literally turned a 2v1 into a 3v2, like they literally kept one guy busy while I killed the other and then went to fight him and they were still living. Working in tandem too, one blinds while the other goes for the throat….

How do you guys view TG? Has it always been just another skill to you? Or have you trusted them with your lives for a time? You may very well even hate them, but I for one would like to take this time to reflect what they’ve done for me (wish I had an attachment right now :p )

Returning to GW2 -- What's Changed?

Hey,
I just started playing again too after stopping for 6 months..
I was S/D as well , and I played mainly PVE with a sprinkle of WvW when bored.

I’ve only been back in the swing of things for a week or two now, but the major changes I found so far are:
-Thieves passive initiative regen is faster (but they nerfed a few traits that would have normally helped restore ini)
-Infiltrator Return has a .5 cast time and no longer breaks stun (This absolutely killed my S/D build, and most of the more fun boss fights out there. I miss this soooo much)
-There is a new condition called torment that damages you over time while you are moving.
-Pistol whip was reworked to be more smooth on the animations, and it’s more spammable now because of that.
-No one in dungeons knows how to play the game without ‘Stacking’ during every fight. (I mean seriously.. if i wanted to stand still and attack.. id play WoW or Old Republic)
-Magic find has been reworked to something called ‘luck’ instead, which is a passive magic find, so if you had magic find gear previously for farming, the stats are something else now.
-Trickery line was reworked, and if you invest in it , your steal will be on a much shorter cooldown and you can steal boons with it if traited.

S/P zerker PVE seems to be the way to go nowadays. I mean obviously you can play any weapon set and be fine, but S/P is easiest.

Its funny how some people have no clue why its done and even think that its gw2 specific thing and cry about it when its done in most games for years, specially the ones with heavy aoe. Reasons to that:
1. Stacking trash in corners makes it faster to kill them with aoe/cleave instead of running around like brainless chickens and killing them one by one and/or dieing in the process.
2. Most corners are chosen because they break line of sight for ranged mobs forcing them to come in melee range and stack up nicely together for aoe damage.
3. Strict formation in corner prevents people running around like brainless chickens and pulling bosses/mobs all over the place making it easier to melee them.
4. Staying in melee range prevents some bosses/mobs to use some of their ranged abilities (Mai Trin fractal for example – she uses shadowstep while in range what hits for tons of damage)
5. Its simply faster to group ress downed people when they are directly at your feet
6. You gotta stay close for group boons/heals/cleanses and even closer for projectile walls ect etc.
7. Many bosses spawn trash who start running all over the place and cause trouble. Stacking in corner that prevents line of sight from their spawn place makes them come right into you aoe.

So no ppl stack in dungeons not because they don’t know how to play game without stacking, but because its simply the most effective way to do it – thing that ppl try to achieve in every game. Also Gw2 is made around stacking.

Tao: on the other hand, condi works much better against elites and champs. And the Carrion equipment provides the necessary survivability.

Besides, you can put 25 stacks on 5 mobs at once. And they melt fast enough to be content with the build, I assure you. :P

You can also pistol whip same mobs and they will fall much faster.

There is no need for more conditions clearing for general pve then you get from signet of agility. And there is no advantage of stealth in pve besides skipping stuff.
