I believe it would create more of an unbalance issue than you might imagine – at least in PvP and WvW. They had to create the adept/master/grandmaster tiers for this reason during the betas. Being able to use two extra points would open up a lot of builds I’m sure, and if they did do it they’d have to limit it to PvE; though, I’m guessing they don’t want to go down that road either as they haven’t shown the desire to even split more of the weapon/utility skills up.
Pretty much has come to either play in Tier 1 or 2 or suffer the potential consequences of terrible matchups. You may not like that, but it’s the best thing you can do for yourself if you seek balanced matchups on a more consistent basis. Spend the 260+ gold or 20+ USD and be done with it. Three of the top six servers are still open for transfers.
My guess is they try to fill the gap between now and the beta with SAB, WvW S4, Queen’s Gauntlet, etc. That would be about it.
I’m just hoping they get more inventive/creative with Medium armor sets. I can’t say I’m ever too concerned with clipping.
It is pretty small from what they’ve shown so far though.
I still can’t see how somebody can derive that without them detailing the zones, and us (or somebody streaming) how big they really are. We don’t know how many class specializations, if there are or are not new weapons. We don’t know the scope of guild halls or the details of new challenging group content, and so on and so forth. You guys are just impatient and little crazy if I may say so.
I wouldn’t be surprised (or mad) if they restrict the instant 80 boost for the new class, but if they don’t I will definitively use a scroll for sure, but may hold off on using tomes as I haven’t leveled a character now in probably over a year. I’ll be playing it as an alt anyhow, so no rush.
All they had to say was Hammer Engi, and they had me by my wallet. Good game, well played!
It’s amazing how some know so much about so little. I want this power! All they went over were the macro, big picture, general, top-level details. They aren’t going to go all out when they can string it out over a period of time that can be featured at other events. It would be a terrible marketing strategy to do otherwise. Guild halls alone could be tied to raiding for all we know (which we don’t) to unlock ways to build/expand upon.
To come out so confident with a blanket statement with so little knowledge of all the details makes you look like one of those children in the movies stamping their feet screaming I want, I want, I want! But, carry on.
I’ve been lagging only during NA prime lately as well. Seen a few other posts about it from various places. I don’t know if it’s them, my ISP, a level 3 somewhere, etc. But, typically the best response you’ll get is contact your ISP after running a pathping. Good luck, and hopefully somebody gets some information to Anet, so they can fix whatever they can on their end, if necessary. It is disheartening when it’s only this game that has latency.
Looks to me like he was AFK or just sitting there as he said he was by looking at the combat log, so has nothing to do with the point trying to be made (agree or disagree).
they still have a sticky for the fall tourny to adopt a dev, LOL
and thats how you know Anet doesn’t watch this forum part
This, and you can always fall back on WvW Achievements for a perfect argument on how the gametype gets so little attention. GW2 is pushing 2.5 years old, and they still haven’t simply adjusted the crazy numbers for most of these.
Supply/demand, and it can change based on the time of day. Just look at ectos – I saw they were down to about 34 silver a few hours ago. I can’t remember seeing them below 40 for quite a while.
The new daily design with class specific wins is not going to help the overall experience either. All the dailies should be big picture objectives such as cap/defend node, win a match or two with any class, rally 5 team members, gain X amount of rank points, do 100k damage to other players, etc. All it would have taken in that meeting with the daily changes is a tad bit of critical thinking for somebody to say, “Guys I think putting in dailies that require people to play a specific class is a bad idea, because it will probably contribute to poorer matchmaking which is what we are trying to change. Instead lets do this ____________”.
Even the cap/defend node daily could be considered bad if people change the way the would otherwise play a match just for the sake of completing a daily, but one shouldn’t be too hard to get in a match.

There was a reason for this, but now I can’t remember! (There was a ton of stuff in this update) I’ll respond if I remember. But I do remember making this change intentionally with reason.
Did it have anything to do with people staying AFK in custom servers for hours, and it was the auto-camera keeping them from being bumped to character select as you would be in PvE or WvW? Only reason I could think of why you would want to make this change. Because, while berable, it is a bit annoying. We’ll just get used to it.
Was just doing fractals. We did the first 3 just fine. Of course we get Mai for the end boss on this .161 server. Everybody would randomly lag and die in the aoe phase.
I think the biggest problem is how easily the soloq lb can be abused. People that haven’t played in while can wait until the last second, play one game and shoot to the top.
This will probably be what happens for the next couple weeks til the patch.
The most exciting piece of information I see here is that with the consolidation of ranked play Skyhammer and Spirit Watch should be going away when I queue solo.
With all the threads about disconnects/lag lately I’m going to guess it is a pause feature, and is what you will see while it is enabled (beverage = kick back and relax while the game is paused).
I still have no idea why they felt the need to devote time and resources into tuning the leveling experience to such a degree. Luckily, I already had all 8 classes at 80, and I have 3 level 80s (scrolls + tomes) in the bank if I ever want to do a “race change”. I started to level a character to see what it was like, and it was quite confounded by the whole thing.
I found it to be just fine. Build yourself defensive if you have to and take all ports/invulns/blocks you can. What’s her face will try to rez you if you go down. I mean you could maybe argue it’s one or two bubble sequences too long as it’s just repeating the same thing between two phases, but it’s really not that bad. Remember the original Eye of Zhatian fight from personal story when the game launched? Now that was annoyingly/unnecessarily long (and crazy easy now). Be patient, and just run away if you need to, or not pick up a bubble in a bad spot, etc.
I’m anticipating a change to chests only being available during the 5 minutes after the champion phase (similar to the sandstorm on Dry Top). Otherwise, everybody is going to want to be defending the Amber tower for obvious reasons.
Or they are going to have to spread out the chests more closer to some of the other locations, because right now it’s got to be like 10 chests between each attack phase. Or it’ll get a huge nerf and you’ll only be able to loot each chest once a day, but as somebody told me they probably shouldn’t do that since we get no loot from kills.
That is because AoE doesn’t need nerfed…. we’re just solely playing Conquest mode….. still! And if they did do nerfs they need to all be PvP only, because there is no way it needs further nerfs in WvW. Now if we wanna go the way of looking at AA cleaves and how powerful they (AA in general) are as being discussed in it’s own thread then I would agree with that, otherwise no. We just need a new gamemode.
We won’t get a worthwhile reply, and the lag will probably be gone come Tuesday when Halloween is removed, and will return when Christmas stuff goes in. I get my worst lag in pvp, even though I’ve gotten some in other places since patch. I believe somebody said this somewhere, but the lag in pvp is probably being caused by them using the pvp architecture for things like the Mad King’s Clocktower and Lunatic Invasion. Christmas does the same thing with the Toy Town.
I’d almost like to setup a 5v5 server with no spectate/hammer/SW, but I don’t want to spend the 200g just for that reason. Anet just needs to setup some of the default servers this way.
We need a mystic forge recipe that converts leather into cloth already. Leather doesn’t sell above vendor value, and still silk is still obviously way over the top with it’s terrible design philosophy in ascended crafting.
15 leather + 1 silk + 5 incandescent dust + 5 philosopher stones = 5-12 silk
(edited by Kuju.2153)
They have a major issue somewhere. I was bored this morning at 4 A.M. server and wondered over to Tequatl, and the event was going smooth until everybody had lag and it disconnected 4/6 of the turret people and then some. According to some people there it had been happening off and on during large events. I know I had it on a WvW map over the weekend too that maybe had 2 half zergs on it. But yeah, NA prime had some lag again last night. I haven’t queued since the patch because I feel so sluggish with rubberbanding almost all the time.
I had forgotten, but hotjoin was probably at it’s best before spectate for sure when the game would just randomize teams each match. Anet just needs to make some of their servers 5v5 without spectate mode like they used to be.
I have to agree. Hotjoin used to be O.K. for going in to just mess around or test a build, but almost 75% of the matches are completely worthless now. They were never about being competitive, but it used to be most of the matches started/finished with the same people (that didn’t intentionally stack), and you could just have some fights; I think that pendulum has swung the other way. I still get a nice server now and again where people are just randomly joining a side and going at it, but that’s a pretty rare occurrence.
(edited by Kuju.2153)
The lag and rubberbanding has come and gone, but since patch it’s been pretty much all the time. I basically just stopped doing PvP as for some reason it’s worse there than PvE and even WvW.
I’m careful to run around calling something overpowered, but steal with all the meta traits is one hell of a skill.
- 900 Range instant teleport with no animation (base)
- Deals 1-1.5k damage and heals for about 2k (major traited)
- Deals ~10 seconds of Poison (minor traited)
- Gain 2 initiative (minor)
- Gain 10-13 seconds of Fury, Might, Swiftness depending if acro or not (major)
- Steal 2 boons from opponent, gain 10-13 seconds of vigor depending if acro (major)
- 1 second Daze, and an additional cooldown reduction of about 4.5 seconds (major)
- Gain a skill from opponent based on class that can be of further detriment to them; specifically Mesmer (holy hell of buffs), Ele with chill a soon as they leave water, and Necro with fear. (base)
All of that in one instant 900 range skill with no animation and on a 20 second cooldown is a lot no doubt. While I think it’s obviously overpowered, it, like other skills/traits in this game can not just simply be nerfed without redesigning a lot of other things with the class to keep it in a decent spot. And I do not think Anet has the resources, ability, or motivtation to nerf (fix) the skills/traits in this game that have little to no counterplay (insert list here).
They (Anet) prefer not to use their own forums for first line of communication. Try Twitter: https://twitter.com/GuildWars2
Most recent tweet:
But seriously, we’re looking into the disconnect. In the meantime, have some soothing new music:
Just please change it back. I’m not even going to read through the thread(s), but I’m sure it’s been mentioned as to why it was fine the way it was, and why you might think otherwise. Please change it back.
I would pay a sub to this game if they put in three things:
1. Map variety, so we aren’t doing the same things every… single…. week. Everybody knows where to place siege in what spot for every situation…. it’s getting boring.
2. Some way to make the matchups more competitive on a week to week basis as is already being discussed in the Anet thread – we’ll see where that goes. Without this it’s hard for most servers in a lot of matchups to really care about the score as they know it’s already decided. Whether its the length of the match or how the scoring is done, I don’t care, but we’re 2 years in and we might get 1 out of the 8 matchups a week in NA that is even remotely competitive. Fighting in the field is great, but would be nice to have something to hang your hat on that feels competitive and can be noticed by all 3 servers.
3. A real GvG system with a ladder, and a way for guilds to fight anytime regardless of being matched up with the server or not. This just should have happened long ago, and is crazy sad that Anet did not pick this up and run with it in glee. Should have known what GW1 meant to a lot of fans, and found it a necessary addition post-launch. Now you have Archeage out, and the Auroria patch launching probably by the end of this month.
Answered the poll, and would rank as follows:
- Ele (A)
- War (A)
- Engi (A-)
- Guard (A-)
- Mesmer (B+)
- Necro (B)
- Thief (B)
- Ranger (B-)
I’ll just start by saying that I truly believe every class is between an A and a B- as I have listed, and can work well in the right hands. The game will never be truly balanced being a MMO, but it’s better than probably all the others. The issue usually lies with situations without enough counter-play whether it be instants, passives, poor animations, etc.
As long as D/D Ele is viable in a teamfight it will always be strong as it can pump out a lot of support, aoe, some CC, and safe stomp/rez with mist. And lets not forget they still have the best downed state in the game.
Warrior is the same deal as an ele in a teamfight with earthshaker and combustive shot just being plain great on point, stab for rez/stomps, standard for rezzing, good CC, only heal in the game without any requirement except to slot it, and can be great to send towards a side point to 1v1.
Engi can be a real menace to deal with on side nodes if you can’t CC lock or Condi bomb them, bring great ranged pressure on points during team fights, stomp/rez with elixir S, provide some team heals with blasts on their water field, and annoying soft CC with chill/cripple/immob, and interrupt rezzes with overcharged shot against the downed enemy (my personal favorite).
Guardian has been the same and will most likely always be the same. I don’t think I need a lot of detail here at this point at what a great class this is to have in a teamfight especially in mid with the ability to do so much support for it’s team.
Mesmer has actually always be a top tier class with the exception of thief having such a large advantage against them (consume plasma is just too much with protection uptime of over 10 seconds, giving stab/aegis/regen/vigor, constant port pressure, and everybody running trickery for reduced cooldown). Shatter can wreck a bunker, remove boons, can spike any half-hp target in general, portal is never terrible in general for a quick advantage to a node, a lot of potential interrupts, and can safe rez/stomp if it’s really called for. Their downstate generally prevents a stomp unless it’s against a single stealthed enemy.
Necro is still basically played the same way as it has really always been. Condi/terror spikes, boon corruption, position yourself well or pay the price, poor mobility, really good for (quick) 1v1, a well timed lich can be nasty, but once everybody knows you are a zerk you may as well put the target over your head yourself and ensure you have a baby-sitter. Despite what anybody will say they still work in certain comps, and can turn a fight in a hurry, but can become a huge liability with positional mistakes.
Thief has been played the same through nerfs/buffs. Always zerk, always looking to decap if the opponent is lazy, prevents stomps through refuge/rupts/stealing stab, pressures the edges, executes low and/or out of position targets, best mobility to create quick 2v1 and 3v2’s. A well played thief is still a gem to have on your team as they aren’t going to put themselves in position to die. Problem is there really aren’t as many good ones out there as think they are. I mean that for 5v5, as 1v1 I don’t care, and thief shouldn’t be looking for 1v1’s anyway unless its another zerk squishy. Lastly, they have the 2nd best downstate in the game.
Ranger I’m still not sold on. Sure it’s great to troll hotjoints and WvW with your 1500 range 100blades, but I’d rather bring a zerk warrior/thief/mesmer to a team fight as they are for the most part a selfish build when they go zerk. They still make pretty good home defenders as a bunker, put some condi pressure up, spirit rez, and work well in some comps. Good downed state in a 1v1 if the opponent can’t safe stomp, and if you both go down, gg. In general a good class to start out with to learn the game as I would say it and warrior are easiest to be effective with at entry-level.
More (unnecessary) salt and toxic behavior within the community – way to go, dude. As much as the Devs have contributed their end in the game staying well below it’s potential, we have one of the worst communities playing just as much a part. GG to us.
Be sure to rationalize the reasoning for doing these threads by citing somebody else already did it before me, so I made a response doing the same thing, and we can continue this train down the track with a dead-end.
Or it can be even less work and do as the OP suggests. Then move cannonball from ship to platform. Add channel on picking up the cannonball like on Spirit Watch. Remove cannon from platform and place 3 on ship pointed at each node (modify ship as needed), with the ability to only load/fire one cannon at a time. New cannonball will spawn only after all shots have been used or a timer expires (30 seconds or so). Once another cannon is loaded that can be the only one fired. That will basically make it a better version of Spirit Watch and Hammer. I always thought and remembered people saying they actually liked the map concept if it wasn’t for the terribly imbalanced water combat.
Either way you already have 80% of the map done just needs some tweaks.

Mag is just going to have to deal with it (I’m from Mag). Pretty sure SoR got kicked around during S2 in Silver League (longer season). Mag should have a bit more of a turnout starting Friday anyhow (even with AA headstart). Gold league is always going to be a joke and a 3 server league anyway, so stop getting huffy about it. If you are from Maguuma, deal with it. If you are one of the other Gold servers wanting more people to fight, well, you are kidding yourself if you think it’s ever going to really be different – so, deal with it.
Position 5 and 6 are the worst spots to be in anyway as Tier 2 hasn’t been even close to balanced in well over ~15+ months now with the old TC, and now with SoS (and you know you are getting thrown to the lions each season being with Tier1). If you have issues with that: Tiers 1, 3, 4, and 5 are reasonably balanced matchups for the most part – pick one. Mag never had any business being a rank 5 or 6 server, but was only that high because of all the servers that have fallen off over the past year, and having 1-2 try-hard pugmannders holding the glicko position for the GvG and fights (which was perfectly fine and was generally what the guild/pug population wanted).
In short, Anet doesn’t need to do anything, because the game is working exactly as they have designed it from an overall standpoint (glicko, ppt, seasons, etc.). If they have an issue with then take a look at all the threads over the lifespan of the game, and do something worthwhile. Not to mention I’m sure the servers in Silver League would rather fight in their perspective league as it will be way more fun and competitive than Gold will ever be. It’s actually (possibly) the first season that will have a competitive league with multiple servers capable of “winning”. So, Gold League (my server included) just deal with it.
Being someone who was absolutely mortified at going up in front of people to give a presentation or speech until I was lucky enough to get the best Professor ever in a Public Speaking class during college (seriously owe her a lot)……. give Karl a break. Being nervous is one thing, but when it affects you to the point of being almost ill maybe you’ll learn something, and be able to empathize for people in those situations.
You can just tell Karl doesn’t feel comfortable at all with what he is doing, and if they are doing it last minute in a hurry up that only makes it a hell of a lot worse. Somebody just needs to do him a favor, and not make it a rush job, so he can get more comfortable with the material and then work on presenting.
Eventually, these seasons (scoring system in general) are going to take it’s toll on a number of servers that are still generally alive/active. Having people flock from a lower population server in each league, and stacking to a select few in order to all but ensure better rewards; plus most servers getting beat down each week, and knowing they have zero chance of winning is going to start to really add up. It’s not just about the length of time the seasons are, but the fact they aren’t even remotely competitive for a very high percentage of the servers involved making the system out to be a joke with no real changes on the horizon to curve the situation.
Yeah, I play on a server that prefers fights over PPT, and I agree with that mindset because we all know PPT is too dependent on coverage gaps. However, it would be really great to actually have something competitive to strive for outside of just field fights. Almost every match-up I’ve been involved in is either we have significant coverage over the other servers or vice versa. Eventually the system has to become overall more competitive or it will just continue to shrink down.
I know it’s not a true 1-to-1 comparison, but there is never going to be a decent league that I would want to watch that starts out teams by limiting the ability for some to compete which is how these WvW seasons start out. You get probably 1, maybe 2, and if you are very lucky, 3, servers that can even compete for “winning” their particular league.

Who knows with these people. Now we’ll have to wait for a RED response to get clarification when it should have been defined clearly in the blog. These guys drive me nuts with their inability on the most simple things. This was obviously a huge hot button issue ever since the video interview was linked, and yet they release the blog in that context. Why?
I’m almost to the point where I hope they’d just go cheap and just base it off glicko rating loss/gain for the week. The server with the most glicko gained wins. Would even appear to make the matchups closer than they really are. At least it would be something since Anet just wants to remain thinking dead center of the box.
Wednesday = Sales pitch for commander tags being 300g per color (incoming gems —→ gold buyers)
Thursday = Season 3 pitch where Anet starts to make money off transfers. Try to sell us how they plan to make it more competitive, or just say screw it and copy Season 2.
Will be a good week for management to celebrate with the staff for increasing revenues this quarter.
I can’t wait for Wednesday to see if Anet calls the bluff…. it will be glorious if they have the balls!
The armor is purely an aesthetic vanity item that has no impact on anyone’s gameplay at all what so ever. There should be more of this (titles, armors, weapon skins, etc.) in a game like GW2, not less. It isn’t like other games based around a gear treadmill that can create gear gaps between sections of the playerbase.
At the end of it all, how in the world is something that should be merely a simple QoL fix and aesthetic addition made into a controversy? No matter what the response is in the coming week(s), Anet, you need to take a serious and honest look inward at your decision making process as it appears to be overly influenced by gem sales at times. I personally believe that a very high percentage of your customers are perceptive of this, will not ignore it, have seen it show up now in a few different instances, and do not believe you are learning from past mistakes (or just don’t care?).
I mean lets just be real for a second… IT’S A FLIPPIN DOT ON A SCREEN… and we’ll be able to change the color. Absolutely no reason to be 300g per dot when the intent of having different colors should be for enhancing a readily accessible tool that the community at large can utilize. REALLY?
Is the difference between a sub-based game and non-sub based game truly that great? There is noway at all, ever, that a reputable (smart) sub-based MMORPG (that I am aware of) would try to put a money sink in as great as this would be for changing a the color of a dot. And if they did… holy hell.
I guess Anet agreed with those of us saying that damage isn’t the problem with warrior’s burst uptime, but it being adrenaline, and how easily it is gained/retained. I don’t know if I agree it should be a complete drain on adrenaline upon a miss, but at least they didn’t just nerf the damage, and ignore the actual problem.
You should be in a group with a guard to get another ~5 seconds on stability on top of your own 5 seconds.
Thats one of the biggest problems, usually if people want to fill their frontline group slots they dont want an engineer.
Right now I dont play pure frontline because of that, I usually run with the frontline but rocketboot through the enemy zerg to get to their backline, drop supply crate and burn everything with my flamethrower. It works rather well because the FT autoattack does enough damage to roast all those zerker necros/eles quite fast.
Hmm, well I guess that all depends on the people for the server you play on. I know most of the time the pugmannders I am with want everybody including backliners in a group with at least one guard as long as there are enough to go around; thankfully, that is almost always is the case. Your commanders should want stab up on everybody, so you can make pushes through doors/walls/chokes when you have to, and not lose people and/or create a tail.
(edited by Kuju.2153)
Build I like to run:
You should be in a group with a guard to get another ~5 seconds on stability on top of your own 5 seconds. If you are not able to get a guard for stab you may want to opt for Saffron bread for even more reduced stun damage. Otherwise if with a guard and able to get 10+ seconds of stability every 25-30 seconds from SYG and your toss elixir B then you won’t need it. I like lemongrass, but you could even go something offensive if you really wanted to.
You don’t have to run P/S, but I like it for the extra blast finisher in water/fire fields, another blind on top of FT, + the block.
You can switch to med kit when on the move for extra swiftness if you need it. Just be sure to switch back before engaging to get the water field + blast finisher back.
I like the Engineer runes for the extra toughness and +7% damage with FT out (should be with FT as much as you can manage), but you could go Hoelbrak or Strength here too if you want to shell out the cash. I can get easy 4k-6k crits with Flame Blast / Detonate combo (go go Intel Sigil). Combined with knockback ability, long fire field, and PBAE blind all on relatively short cooldowns it can be nice to have around once you get comfortable with it. Just watch out for retaliation on the auto-attack.
With FT supposed to be getting a slight buff in the upcoming balance patch it could get even more fun to play around with. Also, might want to see how the Elixir X changes pan out as that could be fun to include in the build for an optional elite. You can option out some traits if you want, but the obvious core ones should be deadly mixture, stabilized armor, protection injection, and juggernaut.
