Guild Wars Factions

Hundreds of new creatures, guild halls, skills and more
Two new professions: the deadly Assassin and the necromantic Ritualist
A whole new continent, Cantha, either connects to the lands of Tyria or stands on its own
Guilds band together into alliances to gain control of towns and access exclusive Alliance Missions
New game types include missions with ranked scoring and large-scale Alliance vs. Alliance battles

What do we get

8? new zones
1 new pvp mode
1 new class
elite specialization with weapons nobody want to use

worth!

Guild Wars Factions was a standalone game, not an expansion. Eye of the North would have been a better comparison.

eotn

Tons of new content designed exclusively for your existing Guild Wars characters.
18 huge, multi-level dungeons to explore. Monuments of your Guild Wars achievements that give access to special items and titles in Guild Wars 2.
150 new skills (50 of which are special, roleplaying-only skills) to use against your foes. 10 new Heroes to help you in your adventures.
40 new armor sets suitable for the great heroes of the land. A first look at three of the exciting new playable races in Guild Wars 2.
Numerous new items, weapons, and titles to attain.

worth!

If EotN had 18 dungeons then GW2 has 33 dungeons with possibly another 11.

It had 18 – http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dungeon

They just weren’t as “huge” as he’s claiming. Yes, they were multi-leveled, but most levels were sort of small. Like GW2 dungeons, their varied in size.

I know the count. The point being that quite a lot of the dungeons were just copy and pasted from others. Look at the Slaver’s Exile maps and tell me you don’t see the same maps in the other dungeons. The entire map for Freezie was reused from another dungeon.

I’m aware, but that doesn’t make them “not a dungeon” though. No one claimed they were “unique” dungeons.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

It’s their new(ish) tactic of trying to drive the gem:gold ratio up. If you can only buy things in a time limited period with no actual certainty of its return it massively drives up the in game currency:real money currency ratio.

Not so very new. Haven’t they been doing the Aniversary sale for 3 years now?

Indeed they have. People act like they are surprised (and yet oddly, people have been asking when this would start this year because they had been waiting for it. Go figure.)

I bet there will be other announced stuff too. I wouldnt be surprised if that included a release date, though I wouldn’t bet on it.

Yes. What this thread is talking about though is that it was stated in the blog post (on the gw2 front page) about Pax the challenging group content reveal is in addition to other big announcements to be made. Thus the speculation.

I disagree. It is misleading. There aren’t any legendary backpieces in the game. So in January when they announced there would be new legendaries, exactly zero people were thinking they would be backpieces. Heck, if you want to get technical, they did say a few years ago that legendary trinkets were coming. How’s that coming along?

So it is misleading because when they announced it the flipping corner of the internet that die-hard GW2 fans like myself reside in all did a collective backflip and dragon emote at the same time because we thought we were finally getting new legendary weapons after years of waiting.

So just to correct you here…. They said “legendaries” They didn’t say that would be weapons or armor or trinkets when they originally announced it. Just some items of legendary quality. Most people automatically think weapons, yes, and we know some of those are coming too because they did tell us there would be a whole new set.

We also know that they were working on legendary gear back in 2013, as you bring up. And in the Pax interview with Matt Visual that year (think they were debuting the new Teq in that instance), Colin specifically states that the first legendary trinket/accessory (think accessory was actually the term used) would be a ring or a backpiece, etc. But it would only be one item type and it would be in that general section of items. So, some of us did consider that as a possibility when they said “new legendaries.”

So not sure why you have your panties in a bunch here. We know we’re getting a whole new set of legendary weapons, as well as some legendary back pieces. You don’t want to preorder, that’s fine. HoT will still be there waiting when you finally decide you want to play it.

It’s not that you don’t understand why I am ticked, it’s that you disagree with me being ticked.

No, it’s that you really have no reason to be kittened off. At least not at any one other than yourself…. You heard ‘x’, made assumptions about ‘x’, and it turns out ‘x’ is not exactly what you wanted it to be and now you’re angry and that’s not Anet’s fault.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

You don’t play games for mechanics, at least you shouldn’t. You should play games because they are fun. (insert gasp of shock here) I know, novel concept is it not?

“But mechanics are what makes it fun!”
No, not true, though they can help. The ‘mechanics’ behind monopoly are boring as hell, but Monopoly itself can be a very fun game. It depends on an assortment of factors, not just the mechanics.

Not everything is going to be just like the silverwastes. Besides, there are people that really don’t like the way SW is done. So are you saying that Anet should listen to you, appease you, and tell those players to just go to hell? They don’t matter because they are not you, OP? Doesn’t work that way.

please don’t tell how should i have fun and why
i’m having fun my way, do you have smthn wrong with it? )

Nice side stepping of the primary point being made.

I will reiterate… the mechanics are not the entirety of what makes your game play fun. They are the very simple rules applies to the actions being taken, and that alone is not what makes something fun. As I pointed out with the monopoly example.

As for having fun your way… What makes your way better than someone elses? As I brought up in my previous post, and you blatantly ignored, you’ve stated that you want to see the new maps done similarly to SW. Some people don’t like SW, so why is what they consider fun any less important than yours?

There needs to be a mix in the new zones. This way the xpac appeals to a broad spectrum of players. We’ve only seen 25% of the first map, and we won’t see the rest until the xpac drops, so it’s hard to judge what else lies in store. Yes, we’re going to see events similar to what we find in the core game; however, given what we’ve seen in DT and SW, we’re also likely to see things like that somewhere too.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Did you even look at my original post? I asked them how many new legendaries we were getting. I feel that is a reasonable thing to ask before i slap money down. These threads don’t need to stop. What needs to happen is ArenaNet being more transparent with what we are spending our money on. I’m not asking for story beats or spoilers. I am asking what the breadth of the content of this x-pac is to determine if it’s worth my money.

They have, for the most part, given you the breadth of the content this xpac will include. The primary features are – the mastery system, the first elite specs, the heart of maguuma region (and it’s associated storyline), the new class, and guild halls. Additionally we know precursor ‘crafting’ is also coming. We know that wvw will be getting the new borderlands. Pvp will be getting stonghold, leagues, and not 1 but 2 unique back items (1 of which is a legendary). Fractals is getting an overhaul and a second set of fractal only weapons. And more that I’m sure that I’m forgetting.

However, all you care about it how many legendaries will come with HoT (which is extremely shallow imo). Anet has told us that a new set will be available; however, not all at launch. Which is fine. If they add them in a few at a time, the people that rush through their acquisition have a bit more longevity to their game play, rather than just hoovering everything they can in the first few days, and then relapsing to the “I have nothing to do” state. At this point I believe we have heard that three legendary weapons and two legendary backpacks will be available for locusts on launch day. Someone feel free to correct my numbers if I have the count wrong.

No, not true, though they can help.

Well gee, I’ve been having fun wrong all this time. Thanks for straightening that out.

Really? Just the mechanics of an event are what make it fun?

It wouldn’t matter if, for example, there were no visually appealing models involved? If it were black and white, animated stick figures, it would be just as appealing? If you had no snazy armor or weapons? No other people to interact with?

"big announcements"

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: LanfearShadowflame.3189

LanfearShadowflame.3189

I’m trying not to speculate what the other big announcements may be. I think it would assinine of them to give us a release date when they haven’t 1)revealed all of the elite specs and 2)haven’t had more than a single “actual” beta for feedback.

They need to get the rest of the elites released, and get another beta done where all of them are available for feedback. Then they might be in an ok spot to determine a release date, after taking feedback and development time to implement their selected changes into consideration. Even after that, they should have at least one more beta to gather further feedback on those changes, and do further development based on that feedback. With all of that, it would still be pushing the envelope for ‘acceptably balanced’ when HoT launches. Honestly, I get the very distinct impression that HoT is going to end up rushed here at the end and they are going to push it out too early (as they did with the original launch) and kitten just isn’t going to be done. As such, we’ll end up with another kitten boss battle at the end of the story arc (yeah Zhaitan, I’m griping about you).

That is not what I want to see because I know Anet can do so much better. Please, please, please Anet…prove me wrong regarding the expansion’s quality.

TLDR “I’m kittened off that I can’t the shinies because I wasn’t here”

Is that what I’m getting from this mini rant? Cause it sure sounds that way.

Yes, some of those rewards are gone “forever*”, and as such they do sort of mean a tad bit more for those that were here to get them. Sentimental value more than anything else really. Certain other rewards were added to the laurel vendor and are still obtainable with time – like the fuzed guantlet ticket, the gifts of candy corn/quartz/sprockets, many of the minis, tonics, etc. Just depends on what you are looking for….

  • *forever is a very loose term with Anet, considering they do love reusing content. It would not surprise me in the lease if we saw some of those things come back at some point down the road as rewards for other content.

Uh, the announced legendary backpacks would be new types of Legendary gear.

Uhu. Too bad…

  • 2015 is not 2013
  • A new type of legendary item is not “new types”, plural, of legendary items

First: In an interview (think it was with Matt Visual, you can find it on youtube), Colin states that we would be getting one legendary item (regarding the blog announcement), and it would be an accessory. A ring, or a backpiece, etc. They hadn’t determined what at that time, but it would only be one piece of the new ‘legendary gear’.

Second: In October/November of 2013, Colin gave us a post stating that the legendary gear would not meet their end of the year projection. (Not surprised, kitten happens in development) So we knew we weren’t getting it then.

Yes, I’m peeved that we got left out in the dark regarding anything after those facts were given, but that wasn’t unexpected either. However, if you want to start getting snippy about what they said they would or wouldn’t do, please verify information that came after that blog post you are referencing to support your argument.

Good to see Wild Blow come back, and definitely an interesting take on it. I wonder if the enemy player counts as a projectile finisher? Wouldn’t that be fun!

Nope. From the interview

We wanted to know more about the rage skills including Wild Blow that was revealed to us. We asked if the skill’s description of turning an enemy’s body into a projectile meant that it could count as a physical projectile finisher and got a laugh out of Robert.

If that was the case then we’d need to reflect the player when they hit a Wall of Reflection! To answer the question, though, we don’t have the capability to make players count as projectile finishers, so this isn’t part of what the skill does.

Lol I wasn’t actually serious! I hadn’t finished reading the article either, when I posted. However, logically speaking, it not being a projectile finisher does make sense, as does his answer.

LanfearShadowflame.3189

I don’t really think there is any straight forward answer to the OPs question. The best we can do is answer on an individual basis on what might lure us away from GW2 (for those of us that enjoy the game), and that’s going to be very dependent on the game as well as the person.

Some people really like ESO and left GW2 to play that, I find it super boring.

Some people really like WoW and have tried other games, but always go back. I played WoW for a total of 7 months before MoP released. That’s all I could take of it.

Some people really, really like Wildstar. That one looked way too WoW-esk, so I didn’t even bother.

I have a guildie that absolutely loves Aion. I found it way too much of a grind fest.

I have a coworker that really loves EVE. I’m not into space based MMOs, they just don’t appeal to me.

I have a coworker that loves SWToR, but I couldn’t really get into it. I guess I’m not a big enough Star Wars fan I guess. It had some lovely cinamtics, but I found the classes and combat lackluster and it didn’t hold my attention.

shrug Not all games are for all people.

it was intentional that the ranger has two leaps so he can follow up fast without running, just with hitting. they said it two years ago or so.

This was not what I was referring to being not intentional. The inability to easily break the chain, thus essentially being rooted in the sequence, is what I was referring to. Yes, they stated that the leaps are intentional, but a long time back, they did state that the inability to break out of it was not. Only after they failed to fix it did it become a “yeah that’s intentional,” which I’m pretty certain was just a cop out. However, their tech has progressed since that time, so maybe now they can do something about it.

Won’t hold my breath though.

I don’t think making the 3rd attack in the chain an evade would go too awry. After all the 3rd slash on the GS auto is an evade. It might make it a bit overpowered to have them both evade or block.

Still, with some of the “new” tech, one would think that they might be able to change that rooting issue finally.

You’re going to see the ‘no elite spec’ ads for the same reason you see ‘must have x ap’ ‘must be zerk’ ‘must be 80’ etc etc.

1) People know what works and tend to be adverse to change (“If it aint broke don’t fix it”) They typically hate and/or fear anything outside their comfort zone.

2) The current state of pve is rather simplistic. The things the elite specs bring to the table aren’t necessary in the quantities that they bring them.

3) A lot of people are simply kittens, but that’s humanity for you

Unless you’re a necro then it’ll be MUST be reaper lol

We’ll still a lot of the “no necro” crap, even after reaper. This falls right back to the points made about people being kittens and being set in their ways.

tl;dr: You will need to earn mastery points which can be from the new expansion maps, and then you will need to complete events in Tyria in order to level up the Precursor Crafting Mastery.

There are mastery points being added for the core game as well (many of which will be retroactively awarded to players), and tracks that require xp grind in the core game. The central tyrian lines, I think is what they are calling them. So it’s not just the new maps.

(Yes I’m aware you mentioned that in your previous paragraph, but you didn’t in your tldr, which you might want to do)

From my understanding, you’ll need to train the Legendaries Mastery track line, the first 3 teirs of which apply to the core Tyrian legendary weapons. That will unlock the assorted collections you have to complete for the core precursors. All of which will have to do with the core game (including the xp grind). At least, that’s the sense I got from the recent beta. Could be wrong, could change between then and release, but that should at least give you an inkling.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

What will the next teaser be? I’m dying of excitement! I’m thinking Engineer! Will Forge be the name? Will hammer be the weapon? WILL DRONES BE THE DRONES?

EDIT: Warrior Specialisation, the Crusader has been revealed!

Crusader? Where did you read that? As far as I know, it’s going to be “Berserker”. According to that data-mined trait background at least…

seems unlikely based on the existance of berserker gear, I’d think “Barbarian” is more likely. but we’ll see. (crusader doesn’t look right)

Barbarian and Berserker are not fitting names for a Torch-wielding warrior.

Berserker actually does work based on the lore behind berserk warriors → bladed weapons and fire not having any apparent affect on them. We could be setting outselves on fire and flying into a blood rage as part of the mechanic.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

New teaser is up (Warrior this week)

Same. I figured either dagger or torch originally. After seeing the datamined art work, it solidified the torch theory for me.

I think I’d like to see the thief come out next. Then warrior. Then ranger. And finally, engi. But that’s just me. As to which we’ll see next, maybe we’ll see ranger, since it was skipped in the order they seemed to have been going. I’m assuming it just wasn’t quite ready yet at the time, and ele simply was.

Masteries and XP should be one system not two

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: LanfearShadowflame.3189

LanfearShadowflame.3189

Yes it uses XP, but as a new system it doesn’t necessarily have to use all things associated with giving XP. As such, there is no reason why they should or “have to” work with this system. However, there is no reason to remove these items from working with the base system (character leveling) for which they were designed.

A valid point indeed. So are we to expect that xp boosters won’t be working either? Cause the same argument applies… for consistency purposes.

In the zam article that someone else quoted, I do believe it says that things like xp boosters, banners, etc, wouldn’t affect xp gain for masteries. It sounds like they may have changed their mind on this, given some of the beta testing.

Although Ayrilana makes a good point. Tomes don’t actually state they give you xp. They state that they give you a level which technically speaking could be considered two separate things. They are related, but they aren’t actually the same.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Tomes continue to do exactly as they did before. They give 100% of a level. Before 80, that levels you up, after 80 is a skill point. Skill points have become spirit shards and tomes used on a level 80 do grant a shard. As such, their functionality has not changed. There is no need for compensation.

The mastery system is a new system. There is no precedent of tomes working with this system, because this system did not exist. Thus again, tome functionality has not changed in this regard either. So, no need for compensation.

Edit: Fixing my terrible, terrible typing.

The mastery system is a new system that uses the old system of xp. Tomes provide xp, stands to reason that tomes should provide mastery advancement. Otherwise remove them from the game and put something useful in their place.

Question regarding 'elite specialisations'.

LanfearShadowflame.3189

They’ve stated that this is how they want to expand the options available to classes. So yes, we will see more ‘elite’ specs in the future. No details have been given specifically saying they will only come with expacs though, so we could potentially see new ones with living world (not holding my breath though).

and then everyone will hord up on tomes and instaunlock every single masteries a few minutes after HoT is released… That is beyond stupid

Tomes are from dailies and from Pvp. Players who put in time ought to get an advantage, & players who Pvp shouldn’t be left far behind.

No.

Period.

This is one step away from “People who pay more should have an advantage”

If tomes of experience don’t do what it says in the box, shouldn’t the people who get them get compensated for their loss?

I mean by making tomes not working as before, doesn’t that reduce their value in the pvp tracks and dailies? If you don’t want them to work on masteries, then those who have them should be compensated.

Why does everyone hate Trahearne?

I thought we were talking about the actual characters not stupid A-net path finding and programming. I will agree baby sitting them so they don’t die and having them walk into walls with an ! above there head reminded me of when your friend goes link dead in a raid dungeon after he started walking forward into the boss.

Little bit of both. It’s a combination of story and programming that typically makes us shake our heads at these characters. After all, if they were actually lovable (not just memorable) characters, would we really be so peeved that they swiped the glory? Or part of the glory, cause really, I had no desire to die for the Canthan Emperor, for example. Or that there programmed AI had limitations? Some, yes, but no where near as much.

Thackery, yes always thought with his kitten but was the worst one of all when it came to actual game play. :P He would charge in at every instance and die. If they at least had him screaming “LEeeRooY StooneSkiin” it would have been at least entertaining. He was nothing but a meat shield without the meat. He kinda reminded me of Keanu Reeves in the Matrix. Just Thackery never became Jesus.

I can agree with you on the Keanu comment. He just….isn’t what I would consider a desirable actor. Very deadpan. Its fits ok for things like Johnny Mnemonic, but not for…other movies he’s done.

Logan on the other hand, I don’t have too much issue with him. I can empathize with his basic back story and his AI is dependably stupid, which I can work with. It’s the random stupid that I can’t stand, at least I can work around the dependable stupidity to my benefit.

Though you did bring up one character I despise more than Thackery and Treehorn combined, anyone else laugh when Abadon ate Kormir’s eyes but than got really kittened when she became a God? Talk about all around bad character development and path finding. It’s bad when I thought Norgu would have made a better Abadon replacment.

Laugh? No. kittened off when she became a god? Maybe a bit. That was more of a “go figure, this is what I get for helping her” moment.

“Everybody” is a strong term.

I don’t mind Trahearne. I might even sort of like him when he’s not being annoying (which isn’t really all that often). But I don’t “hate” or even “dislike” him. He’s just another Rurik or Togo in my book. (Required, but relatively useless)

shrug

Rurik… I still laugh for a good five mins when I think of him dieing. Though he was still more of a man than “Treehorn” in more than one way.

Togo least had honor and a back story and knew where he was going in life.

While we are talking about characters we hate from GW, anyone want to bring up Logan Thackery?

Lol, that still doesn’t mean they weren’t useless. They weren’t terrible characters. but they sure were annoying.

“Hey..where’d Rurik go? He’s gotta open this door….”
“Oh look…Togo’s stuck again… "
“Kitten! Monk, go save Mhenlo so we don’t have to start over!”
“kitten you Kormir, stop pulling more kitten!”

Ah yes, fond memories. (Super annoying at the time, funny as hell now)
