Aiden, so you’ve changed your argument to the 15% tax being the money taken out, not the value of the destroyed items.
Good. Because that’s the only logical argument. Gold sink because of 15% tax – fine. Gold sink because of items being destroyed – not fine.

Mystic Forge actually stops gold being taken out of the game. Because if those 4 items still existed, they might be sold over and over on the TP, taking 15% of the price out of the economy each time they’re sold

Exotic Armor is sold by Karma vendors in Orr, when their temples are open. It’s perfectly adequate for nearly everything in the game.

The precursor drop rate or lack thereof is the main gold sink in GW2 and the number one method of keeping players gold poor to generate gem sales. Forgive me if I feel cheated by Anet. This isn’t a FTP game, a box price game that wasn’t supposed to act like one.
How is the precursor drop rate a gold sink?
Low drop rate forces players to use the Mystic Forge to get one. The mystic forge destroys 4 items while retuning one.
That’s not a gold sink at all. The gold was passed from one player to another to buy those 4 items in the first place. It doesn’t take gold from the economy at all, just redistributes it.

It’s a necessary change because of Megaservers, and not something they’re going to change back.

Just on point 1. You get 5 character slots for free, but you can get more character slots. They are bought with Gems, via the Gem store. You can buy Gems with IRL money, or buy them with in game gold too. Extra character slots cost 800 Gems, but go on sale from time to time too. I have bought 3 more character slots, so now I have 8.

What Race are you and where are you trying to level? Use the GW2 wiki to see what the zone levels are, and choose one appropriate for your character.
As others have said, just have fun, do hearts, jump puzzles, map completion, events and you’ll level pretty quickly.
Just one thing, seeing as you’re from WoW. GW2 levels aren’t the same. It takes the same amount of time to level from 3-4 as it does from 79-80. That’s unlike WoW, where lower levels take almost no time to level.

Look up what WoW added between release and the first expansion. Just google it. There is a wiki.
Compare it to GW2, than you might understand why people are upset.
Look up how much you had to pay to play WoW between release and the first expansion, and you’ll understand why you shouldn’t be upset.
So you’re saying that GW2 will always have inferior content delivery because of its B2P/gem store business model?
Absolutely, compared to WoW. And you know WoW has their own ‘Gem’ Store as well as a subscription, right?
I was just curious because quite a few people are saying things like “the living story provides expansion quality content for free”. I just wanted to make sure you recognized that GW2’s living story is worth exactly what you paid for it…very little to nothing. If you’re willing to accept that, fine. I guess some people were hoping (largely because ANet said so) that Living Story content would be high quality and akin to a paid expansion.
I’m not one of the ones complaining about content. I’m quite happy with having no new content for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the detailed info. And you meant 4 level 75, not 4 level 70.

I’m guessing with the rate he is reporting it’s all LVL 80 Exotics as Rares would be a much lower chance (I could be wrong in my guess here). I think a LOT of the issue of people convinced the MF is a waste of money for Precursors were using all Rares and don’t realize how much lower the chance is for them.
There’s some data on the wiki for exotics, but not for rares. wiki says 0.79% for exotics. I have found some data on the web saying 1 in 700 for rares, so yeah, much lower, 0.14%.
That’s why I wanted to know from the OP. His 1/5 update did say “Moving on to Greatswords and Rare Greatswords now”

Yeah, I forgot Traherne. He should have been my #5 on worst.

OP. You’re totally missing the best of them all. Sylvari females are just the tops. British accents and everything. Level a Sylvari female. You won’t regret it.
“This rose has thorns, here they are!” drives me insane enough to not play a female sylvari ever because I really don’t want to hear that sentence even more often…
I love that.

Clearly you guys dont have a grasp of what RNG or statistics mean. Let’s say you have 1:1,000,000,000 chance to drop a precursor. This is your chance to drop everytime you loot something, doesn’t matter if you already got 1k items, your chance won’t be 1:999,999,000 for the next drop.
They do have a grasp.
Let’s say you roll a die. What’s the chance of rolling a 6? well 1 in 6. That is every single time, no matter what you’ve rolled before. It’s 1 in 6, 1 in 6, 1 in 6 etc.
However, the chance to not roll a six after a number of rolls gets increasingly slim, the more times your roll.
Chance of not rolling a six after n rolls is (5/6) to the power of n.
After 3 rolls, its 46.3%. After 10 rolls, it’s 16.1%
That’s what people are complaining about. After so many drops, or mystic forge attempts, the probability that they would have got a pre-cursor by now is quite high, but they didn’t get one.

So, you get them in the game somehow, and they’re in your inventory, just like something else?

I want to know the mechanics of it. Is it a skin from my wardrobe that I put on the TP, or is it something else. Basically, how do I do it?

Is gold that is generated by a precursor sale any different than other gold?
Yes, it is. It’s large and comes in one chunk. Other gold is not like that.
So, what he’s really saying is – what would you do if you suddenly got about 1K gold all of a sudden.

Best:
1 No subscription
2 Using the TP from anywhere
3 Deposit to collection from anywhere
4 Personal Nodes
5 Champion Trains
I have way more than 5, but those are the top ones.
Worst:
1 Gold is hard to come by
2 Farming items is tough
3 Dungeons are meh
4 Crafting doesn’t seem worth doing
5 Can’t come up with a 5th

I agree, the TP is simply horrible and the people who defend it are just too lazy to earn gold the real way.
And Anet is too lazy to think of more imaginative ways to add gold sinks to the game than depending on TP moguls (15% taxes add up). The anti inflationary mechanism is anets main argument in favor of this TP crap.Can you picture how remarkably stupid an MMO with no trading system would be?
Take the pictures of people with thousands of Bloodstone Dust that they can do nothing with and multiply that by several hundred thousand.
The TP is a tool that you can use to trade away the stuff you don’t want for the stuff you do want. It benefits all players of the game and the deflation is an added perk.
I played WoW as if it had no Trading System. I vendored everything, and knew the best thing to make to vendor for every single crafting mat. Just did it for fun, but it was certainly doable.

Eventually dyes prices will rise to a high level. Please keep in mind that dyes no longer drop out in the world anymore and that the market is currently flooded with an excess of dye because of the account-wide patch to the dye system.
It is still very much a market for buyers. There will be a day when players won’t believe that you could ever buy a dye for so little.
You’re only looking at one side of the equation. The supply side. The demand side needs looking at too. Why do you think so many are flooding the market now? Because people don’t need them. Who’s to say demand won’t be even weaker in the future?

Well I know you’re just trying to be a kitten, but I’ll indulge you anyways.
So that would entail separate pools. Thus upgrades to exotic or named for that matter being independent from one another. It’s good to start digging into how things work.
I had always thought of it as a batch chance. A has a large chance of B, a smaller chance at C, and a miniscule chance at D. B has a larger chance at C, and increased chance at D….etc etc.
Think of it like this:
Before: Chance at precursor 1% Chance of LV80 non-precursor 99% Chance of LV75+ 0%
After: Chance at precursor 1% Chance of LV80 non-precursor 89% Chance of LV75+ 10%
It’s entirely possible to code it that way. And if Anet says it hasn’t changed, they presumably know from the code that it hasn’t actually changed.

Before the april patch you get a lvl 80 out of 4 lvl 80 in the forge …. now even if you use 4 lvl 80 exotic you can get a lvl 79 … i think its bugged
I was going to mention this same thing. Since you may get any exo from lv 75+ that increases the pool of exotics you are pulling from, reducing the chance at obtaining a precursor from the MF.
It was mentioned in the patch notes that precursor drops from the forge are the same.
I have a hard time trying to put rational behind this.
On one hand they have definitely added <80 exos into the pool. Thus one’s chances to get a lvl 80 exo (including named) would have to decrease if everything else remained the same.
If they increased the chance of a named exo to offset the change, then chance of them wouldn’t be affected. But ofc this would mean they actually have been affected.
You can believe them. It could certainly be coded such that the chance to get a pre-cursor is fixed, and the chance to get level 75+ was taken out of the chance to get a non precursor Lv80.
Updated every Monday
It looks like the MF is working as intended as it is giving a wider array of outputs, but that just means that you have a higher risk of getting crap. I usually throw a hundred or so weapons into the MF lottery, but I’ve been selling/holding onto mats until they make a statement about the MF.
I know that the precursor reward was around 1% (I know a little less) but if the output now can give 75+ exos, the % has to be lower.
Just to let you know, it doesn’t HAVE to be lower. It depends where the code for the 75+ exotic came from. If the precursor is first in the code:
rng = rand (1000000)
if (rng < PRECURSOR_RATE) then
{
output a precursor
goto end
}
else
if (rng< ……
etc.

Farming is not RNG. You farm , you earn gold you buy precursor from TP.
Yes because this feels very legendary doesn’kitten
If I buy an original Van Gogh does it feel less legendary than if I painstakingly recreated a forgery by hand?
Legendary is a description of the final product, not the process.
Yes but something that is legendary should have a legendary process before it, you can’t go around saying oh this piece of art is legendary when it’s just been printed onto a sheet of paper, which is exactly what the forge/tp feels like.
Mate it feels the same for you, but for me if I worked for something and worked hard for it I enjoy the end product more and feel a greater sense of accomplishment that if it was simply down to luck
I think that’s something we can agree on. Get rid of the prescursor, and add something else that takes a long time to make. RNG is not legendary.

How does it feel different than spending all the gold on things to throw at the magic forge? One way – Magic Forge spits out a precursor. Other way – TP spits out a precursor.
