Funny is that he didn’t mention anything from the lack of healing in death shroud which is another aspect that holds us back enormously.

Technically: “By having no access to any other skills and with a list of restrictions as long as your arm.” with a link.

That’s a biggie for me because it’s just so frustrating as to how many restrictions there are. Death Shroud has been nerfed over and over again.

I gotta wonder, whats with all of the Ten ton hammer publicity recently? Is it centered around the upcoming HoT expansion entirely or have I just not noticed their interest in GW2 before? o.o

Seems like. They seem to get tons of info from ANet.
Could be that there’s not really much happening on MMORPG market recently.

The only class/builds that can instantly kill turrets are classes that go full zerker. And as has been pointed out by people in numerous threads on numerous sub-forums: those builds sacrifice a lot of defensive capabilities to be able to hit that hard, so it balances out.

I’m not entirely sure Medi Guardians sacrifice anything Amazing damage, condition clear, immunities and healing. Oh and they can teleport while trapping people inside inescapable bubbles. Awesome!

They DO sacrifice something: The ability to win fights 1v1.
They are guardians. That’s sacrifice enough. They bring only a handful of attacks, which are hard to evade or zip in and out of. They are incredibly strong at popping glass canons, but they just can’t chew through sturdier builds, because a lot of their constant dps is tied to slow, easily evaded attacks. If the initial burst doesn’t put them at an advantage, they will start slowly swinging their hammer around.
Their burst is amazing and hard to evade. But a d/d ele or cele rifle still has the edge when it comes to constantly putting out small chunks of reliable damage.

What? What Medi Guardian can’t win a 1 on 1?

Lots of professions struggle to bring down bunker builds such as Celestial Elementalist or Shoutbow Warrior – that’s their job. Everything else is easy pickings for a Medi Guardian.

Medi-hammer (cele bruiser build) has 1 teleport, only teleporting you towards your target.
Medi-dps (zerker) does not come with the hammer (so no trap-circle) and again only utilizes Judge’s Intervention as teleport.
both teleports are on 36sec cd’s

The bruiser variant is very vulnerable to focused dps.
The zerker variant is even more vulnerable to focused dps.
They don’t trap you in a bubble, they trap you in a ring. The bubble (shield-skill. the do not utilize shield, they run focus) just pushes you back, and the ring is useless on slightly elevated terrain since you can simply jump out on the lower side.
As rifle engineer you also can use the self-knockback from OS to both break immobilize and escape the ring on flat terrain. Acid bomb jumps you over the ring, rocket-boots, while shortened significantly, also lets you escape the ring, gearshield-block lets you almost outlast the ring. If you additionally run shield you can chain #5 with gearshield to completely outlast the dps inside the ring…
The ring itself is on a 40sec cd…
s/d builds kite / shred them.
Power bombs/mines shred them.
Cele rifle shreds them.
Power / cele nades in general shred them.
Magnet-pull nullifies their main-heal.

The counterplay is real.

Do you start to compare (incorrect) apples with bananas again?

If we’re arguing over semantics, I’ll happily play.

I’m fully aware of the Medi Guardians strengths and weaknesses – I have one myself (you can see her here: http://goo.gl/M33XxH)

In a competitive environment, almost all Medi Guardians take a hammer. It has better CC, high spike damage thanks to Sigil Of Intelligence and is capable of ringing off a player – while teleporting – thanks to Ring Of Wards and Judge’s Intervention. Discussions on their cooldown is largely irrelevant in this matter as they vary depending on the Meditation.

Combined with the damage output from Scepter thanks to Sigil of Air and Fire, the Medi Guardian is capable of dealing enormous damage while still maintaining huge amounts of survivability:

Shelter = Provides a block and heal
Virtue Of Justice = Provides a blind
Virtue Of Resolve = Removes 3 conditions, heals and applies Regen
Virtue Of Courage = Provides a block, stability, protection and regeneration
Meditations = All heal for nearly 2,000 health. Two of those Meditations also remove conditions.
Renewed Focus = Provides invulnerability, heals you for nearly 2,000 health and resets all your Virtues.
Shield Of Wrath = A 4 second block
Ray Of Judgement = Provides regeneration and removes conditions

So yes, Medi Hammer Guardians are not only capable of dealing enormous damage (Shield Of Wrath + Aegis + Judges Intervention + Smite Condition) but they sacrifice very little survivability because of it. Careful management of your Meditations, Elite and Virtue’s can keep you alive for a frighteningly long period of time. I personally never have trouble against any Engineers and have never had my Ring fail when teleport bombing.

Is there counter play? Yes, of course. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. Gern was stating berzerker builds sacrifice a lot and that’s not true when it comes to Guardian’s.

Oh good another one of these. Cross class comparisons unless very similar usually aren’t good at making your point. You also conveniently left out all the downsides of Phantasms/Clones compared to turrets. Clones/Phantasms eat up cleave damage like a magnet in their quest to stay close to the target, and you can’t control their position so they are consistently line of sighted. Mesmers shatter skills are integral to a lot of playstyles, meaning just summoning a phantasm then never using your shatter skills again is a terribly ineffective way to play. Phantasms scale off the stats of the mesmer and don’t have nearly as many boosting traits as turrets, turrets have 7 major traits btw, phantasms have 4 majors(1 of which is never taken), 3 minors(and all of those minors are in Inspiration). So you can’t exactly build a bunker mesmer and expect your phantasms to do much damage. Phantasms and clones have always been susceptible to conditions, crits and crowd control so if you’re gonna compare them I’m surprised that was missed. Not to mention that most mesmers you run into won’t be running increased health for phantasms, so unlike turrets, phantasms will have around 3000 hp.

The key difference is Phantasmal Berzerker has an 8 second cooldown, where as Rocket Turret has a 50 second one…

They were glad turrets were now useless and that overnight, they had vanished from ranked play. What frustrates me so much about this attitude is that it’s entirely selfish as opposed to looking at the bigger picture of how a profession and its skills function. I regularly hear about how turret engineers and the fact they are AI controlled is unfair and yet a mesmer differs little in the sense that Phantasm’s are also AI controlled damage. The only difference being that a Phantasm’s damage is higher than any turret, lower in cooldown, can be shattered and you don’t sacrifice any utility for having them. Oh, and unlike a turret, they can follow you.

Has he been reading my posts? Can this guy just come here and high five me?

Looking at your game history over the last few days, there were only two games you lost where the enemy team had a larger party than was on your team.

Remember that when you solo queue, the rest of YOUR team could be in a party, and you were paired with an equal opposing team. Also, checking for players that queued together by attempting a party invite will at best reveal they are paired with a single other person. Players could have even partied after joining a match.

Evan, every week we’re having the same discussions with you coming on the board informing people of the compositions they’re actually facing. Would it not be easier, to avoid this issue, by either highlighting players who are in a team (on the scoreboard) or by allowing solo and ranked queues. Surely it would save so many issues?

A) 50-60 FPS on the highest graphics settings
B) Have yet to experience any skill lag

This is a genuine question as I’d really love to know.

Shield usefullness?

in Guardian

Posted by: Lewis Burnell.2493

Lewis Burnell.2493

I think you’re all missing the point on Shield versus Focus. The Guardian Focus is a selfish weapon that’s designed to keep the Guardian alive or condition free. The Guardian Shield is a team based weapon that’s designed to support a large group of players.

Shield of Judgement provides protection for anyone caught in its blast, reducing damage by 33% for 3 seconds. It’s great when a spike is incoming. Shield of Absorption is a large area block that protects and heals when it’s burst.

Both of these skills are incredibly useful in tPvP but they require slightly different play. SoA is excellent at knocking players back who are rezzing, protecting your team if they are rezzing or preventing heavy range builds such as Longbow Rangers. The heal is also nice alongside Regeneration because it heals for around 1.4K

The fact that the cooldowns on Shield are shorter than Focus is a bonus as well. Shield has its place, people just look at the weapon wrongly.

Focus 4 bounces onto allies and provides condi clear and regen, and focus 5 is a blast finisher. I find those more useful for a team than anything shield provides.

Focus 4 is also easily dodged or blocked and it only clears 1 condition. It’s not mind blowingly good. As for Focus 5 being a Blast, that’s great but considering Medi Guardian’s use Hammer it’s largely irrelevant.

Ranger worth getting better at? (pvp)

It’s actually surprisingly easy if you don’t use the garbage Meta build. Try this instead:

http://de.gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJATRjEq0waHLusQ1ag+ga9CEAjdrfw9VEEp9AqA-TpBFwACuAAIOCA12fYxhAoaZAAPAAA

This build does not feel manly enough to me :/ but hey if it works for you then that’s what counts!

It’s actually not that hard to survive using 6/6/2/0/0 once you get used to kiting and know what to dodge.

6/2/6/0/0 or 6/4/4/0/0 are also other variations some can run if they feel they die too easily.

This variant build isn’t about feeling manly, it’s about being clever with build design. By not taking Traits in the Skirmishing line, you lose some Precision but gain the following:

Additional power from Strength of Spirit
Condition removal from dodging (Poison and Blindness)
x2 Condition removal for EACH Survival skill you use
Fury on EACH Survival skill you use
Fury and condition removal on Keen Edge (Trait)
30% extra Boon duration (applies to said Fury)
Lots more health

Taking the traditional Read The Wind Meta Build (as you describe) makes absolutely no sense. It has almost no condition removal, you have less health and don’t deal much more damage.

[Seeking Advice!] Switching to the Greatsword

in Ranger

Posted by: Lewis Burnell.2493

Lewis Burnell.2493

Your Greatsword is a utility weapon that is also capable of dealing huge damage thanks to Maul and Sigil of Intelligence. Really, you want to be switching to it when you want to escape (Swoop) when you’re running away (Counterattack) or when someone is low health and you need a big spike (Maul). I’d also recommend if you’re chasing someone it’s a good thing to open with Counterattack’s Cripple before switching to Bow.

The Greatsword is a very good weaponset and will prolong your life massively.

Rangers really have to be carried in any team at the moment, because it is difficult to be useful in team fights, (condi or power). Condi rangers really are 1 person focus fire as opposed to engis where the can just spam nades and burn everybody. Power rangers rely on their teammates to peel for them.

I think rangers really have to rely on their teammates to do the right thing to be useful atm. Its hard to carry a team being a condi ranger or power ranger (unless its foefire). I find most of the time that if my team is doing poorly in any team fight, I’m by myself running around the map trying to get a good position to get caps and 1v1’s. But when my team is rolling well, I find it easier to pick up match ups. You can’t really carry teams with a ranger as well as with a guard, ele, or engi.

Why would they need someone to peel for them?

They have:

Hunter’s Shot
Swoop
Counter Attack
Signet Of Stone
Entangle
Fear (Pet)
Immobilize (Pet)
Muddy Terrain

That’s more than most classes have to survive.

Article Discussing Ranger And The Meta

in Ranger

Posted by: Lewis Burnell.2493

Lewis Burnell.2493

Guyz, but you are missing the most important point in this…

The reason why Rangers are not going to become a PvP meta is simple.
They need to be light years away from point (the goal objective) to be effective.
Which means the following: Not only they bring nothing but damage (neither entangle nor Muddy Terrain are used for point objectives – but solely for selfish survival purposes) – but even the damage is lower in comparison to Other Zerk classes such as Mesmers or Thieves.

Which means the following:
The only contribution the Ranger will bring is damage and a cripple (barrage).
No health pool to distribute the damage, no utility to help secure the point. A mere single target knockback that is super weak at long range and gets blocked by unimportant targets most of the time anyways.

tl;dr
A ranger will not become the meta, because he is only effective at range where his objective contribution is Zero.
There are less targets to be downed or pushed out of point, less targets to help you revive or rally (Thieves excel at saving), and even the damage Ranger brings is not even comparable to either a Mesmer or a Thief.
Ranger is just more comfortable sniping from “safe” distance.

How is being at range, dealing huge damage, ever a problem for a team game? That’s like saying a Mesmer won’t ever be Meta because they have to fight off point with Greatsword. It’s simply not a disadvantage, in any way. When you’ve four other players on your team capable of staying on point, the Ranger is in an excellent position to pin point targets, remain unharmed and use their utility from a long way away. Perhaps I’m a half-full sort of guy, but the Ranger being ranged is a huge advantage if your team actually use that range to their advantage. I know in the many tournament games I’ve played, targeting players who are downed, preventing stomps or pressuring a bunker is incredibly easy – all the while I’m out of the way.

Lewis Burnell.2493

You could argue “good players” for anything. It’s a merry-go round. Even the best players can be easily caught in a Rapid Fire when they run out of skills or dodges. Just like any good player can be caught by a Thief or a Mesmer shatter. It’s about finding the opportunity and using it to your advantage.

Being caught by a thief will result in being stunned > dazed > blinded and waking up at 50% HP… With a possibility to repeat all over whenever a stealth button is hit.

If a Ranger catches you off-guard, that means that someone else must have set the CC for you – which means you are already in a 2v1 situation and there’s no way you are going to loose anyway.
If you think that a Ranger can just blow 2-3 target’s dodge rolls and reflects or defensive cooldowns just by AFKing with Auto-Shot than you are quite wrong. It’s actually the other way round. By using Rapid fire – your enemy uses most of their Dodges and Def cooldowns.

I’d really disaagree. Spider F2 + Knockback + Rapid Fire catches many, many players. You have to look at the role of a Fury/Longbow Ranger as a ranged Thief. You approach fights on the edges, chooses the most vulnerable target and save your Rapid Fire for the optimal spike.

Lewis Burnell.2493

The reason rangers fall short of mesmers and thieves in spvp is because of their superior mobility and boon stripping. No one is arguing that SotF isn’t a strong fighting build, but what you are calling utility in that build mainly applies to you and not your team. SotF’s fury and condi cleanse don’t help your teammates, things like spotter, SoR, healing spring, even traited shouts do.

I really disagree. Mesmer’s have blink, but no good Mesmer uses that for traveling around the map – especially if there’s an opposing Thief. That leaves traveller runes, and portal (on long cooldown). A ranger has Swiftness and Swoop. Not a huge difference, really. As for Boon Stripping, I think it’s much less important now after the Stability change.

When trait: Rapid Fire is 8 second: huge difference of “Enormous Spike Damage” than 10 seconds. Example: if it take 10 seconds to kill a thief, ranger can easily kill thief under 8 seconds with trait adjustment.

I do not know why did not include that in his articlet: it make me feel he is not honest.

It is the same person who wrote this article:

http://www.tentonhammer.com/editorial/guild-wars-2-are-thieves-and-mesmers-cause-meta

For the small amount of damage you sacrifice by having Rapid Fire on 10 seconds, as opposed to 8, you gain a lot of survivability. That said, Rapid Fire deals enormous damage if the opposition has no dodges remaining.

When trait: Rapid Fire is 8 second: huge difference of “Enormous Spike Damage” than 10 seconds. Example: if it take 10 seconds to kill a thief, ranger can easily kill thief under 8 seconds with trait adjustment.

Because he isn’t talking about the terrible players you find in hot join?

Good players know how to counter the rapid fire and close the gap on the ranger. If they are running a condi build they can wreck the ranger if he is running the 6,6,0,2 build. It’s better to run something like the SotF build that gives you the tools you need to fight back.

You could argue “good players” for anything. It’s a merry-go round. Even the best players can be easily caught in a Rapid Fire when they run out of skills or dodges. I find cannot imagine the revenant going through the base campaine at queensdale. There is no class like it. No destiny’s edge member has it at the start. It just feels wrong as of right now, and full of holes. As someone mentioned above, full of Time Paradoxes, that would have the potential to rip a hole in the space time continuum, resulting in the unthinkable and cataclysmic results. I suppose Ritlock and his future self could just faint. Wake up hours later, thinking it was a bad dream.

I believe Logan is a guardian, Caithe is a theif, Eir is a ranger, Zoja is a elementalist, Ritlock is a warrior. Now you want to go back in time when Ritlock was a warrior, and tell him his future? Ummm. No. Just no. OMG. No no no no no no, and no.

I would imagine that it would need a special area, or a start off a higher level then 1, with it’s own thing like Ritlock being your mentor as a Revanant or something.

Hmm…I understand that, but at the same time the personal storyline is totally flawed in terms of time. I haven’t finished mine yet, but I have played all the Living World story. When you visit The Pact library, Zaithan’s tail is there. I’ve not killed him but according to the narrative I have. It’s physically impossible to handle this.

I think a Sylvari Revenant. I currently have all 8 classes but I’ve been waiting on a sort of “Dark” version of the Guardian. I’m hoping the Revenant is an aggresive spellcaster.

OK, the Ranger Pet concept never entered my head. That would be quite incredible.

I think there will only be 4 Legends, and you’ll access them similar to how a Mesmer uses his Shatter skills. Once you select one, your primary skills will change (similar to an Elementalist).

Let's Talk About: Specializations

I’m concerned for how specializations will mix in with base profession:

1. are they an alternate profession, with own skills, traits, equips, that does not mix with base profession? So I’m either druid or a ranger but i can’t use ranger skills as druid, or druid skills as the ranger?

2. Are they alternative sets of skills, profession mechanic and trats that does mix in with the base profession and it’s total freedom what i select?

3. Are they free for all jobs, or each stuck to one base profession? Can my engi become a druid?

4. Is there one specialization per profession or more if above is restricted?

The Druid video showed him still having his pet so I suspect it isn’t a totally different class, just a branch away from the Ranger.

Why do I feel like the playstyle is going to be similar to something like a power necro build? Relatively tanky/high health with mad DPS but minimal escapes.

That’s my only concern. Colin did say Mallyx would be conditions, however.

I think the Druid just gains access to Staff unlike Ranger.

I think Spirit Watch could work but it does favour ranged classes and classes capable of moving quickly. Not masssively, but enough to make the map a challenge.

On a related note, I’d like to know why I’m sometimes in combat on respawn, having to deal with the combat speed debuff when leaving base.

Maybe you applied a 16 second damaging condition before you died?

As for the random damage, it’s only a visual bug with floaters. I see it occasionally, but it doesn’t put me in combat.

I’ve had this bug several times and it has only ever occurred on Foefire upon respawn. I take around 400-600 damage and my health ping-pongs instantly back up. For a few seconds I go into combat but quickly drop out of it again.
