What happened to Blackgate?

I have to admit that it’s pretty disheartening to come back to find my server has basically surrendered and if I want to get into some good heavy WvW action, I’ve got to transfer. I’ve been on BG since the beginning. There used to be this sense of community we built with pride and loyalty and now it just seems dead. I’m glad I logged in first before I put out the money on HOT lol

I only came to YB because it was the only T1 server open awhile back, I wanted to roam and heard action action action SUPER ACTION T1 boom because the tier I was in was dead as a fly! I find the roaming is kinda dead now in T1 and have no idea how T2 is currently. T3 is ok on my second account I guess.
I do find BG roamers to be very polite and easy going when I do come across one, in fact I think they may be the coolest out of the multiple tiers I’ve been on. I do hope BG returns to their former glory, sorry bud

I cas assure you t2 sucks now for roaming. Some people duel, but so few roam, so finding fights is hard. You are always outnumbered, and it seems players have lost interest in fun fights. I came to t2, cause my computer couldn’t handle t1, but those times are done, and I thinkin I’d prefer being in a lower tier server now. Not sure where, but I don’t plan on spending money to support wvw, since it was been so destroyed. If they make it free to transfer back to something like darkhaven (my original server) I may consider it, a lot of nice people used to play there.

I lost a game against 3 ele, a reaper, and mesmer. Impossible to down anyone when 3 eles are around. Not sure what we had, but I know I was playing the only ele on my team, we had at least 1 reaper (probably that was it), a dh that I can remember, but not sure on the rest. I stayed mid for a long time, but once we lost mid fight, there was no coming back.

Shame, I saw this in one of my matches (but it was a fear bug, player could only move in the same direction as the fear in downstate) Melee didn’t work, but my ranged auto was hitting him. Never seen players fully control themselves in downed. I hope we don’t see more of this, as funny as it is.

When I needed to play extra professions, I just rolled meta builds, tweaked them a bit and destroyed. Played Necro (full signet condi build, and boy was it lols) and Ele (Cleric support, and had some fun). I won about as often as with my main (thief). Maybe that was another advantage of playing thief, you don’t struggle too hard to switch classes. I think it took me maybe 10-12 games for my 7 wins. Didn’t change much for me, but playing other professions will help you learn to fight them.

I always look at peoples armor, the dyes they were in order to judge how experienced they are. I often expect players wearing early level armor to be bad. Not always the case, but it is a good way to lower expectations so you don’t get upset when you meet newer players that just can’t handle pvp yet.

A small thing to help thief

Definitely no to headshot buff. A change to assassin signet could make the full signet burst build even more silly. (kind of weak right now though) So maybe a buff would work there, but I’d be worried about complaints from all the guardians and mesmer getting blown up in wvw. Not sure I like unblockable effects on thief to be honest. (outside traps)

I really think thief needs an overhaul of many of it’s less used skills. However, taking the meta and making it stronger should only happen once they nerf necro, rev, guard, engie, and bug fix (ele). Once these classes are brought back to earth, I doubt any of the thieves meta skills will need changes, and the focus should be on helping things like Tripwire, ambush trap, signet of shadows, ice drake venom, shadow trap, etc. So many skills just never get used, and it would be really great to find a place for them.

Edit: I wanted to add, I thought of a skill I would like unblockable on: cloak and dagger. Or decrease it’s initiative cost.

Can’t speak for wvw, as I can’t find myself ever having much fun there anymore.

For pvp, thief is still strong, but it takes a lot of dedication to the class, and a complete understanding of all opponents moves. Since you can evade on command so readily, you should be able to dodge most burst. Your mobility allows you to get to points faster than others. I decap all the time, just running mid, waiting for far to snoop close to mid and quickly getting to far for decap before they get back. No class can come close to the speed of a daredevil. We were also given a lot more burst potential with impairing daggers and fist of fury, both of which I don’t see many thieves running yet. But since thieves already struggles for sustain matches, I focus on big burst, and can really help end fights anywhere on the map. Conditions can be a problem, and necro is insane, but you can easily win necro 1v1, but it is rarely too useful. (At least they can’t kill you unless they catch you by surprise)

If you need specific help, don’t hesitate to message me. But regardless, I thnk thief is one of the hardest classes right now to play well, which is why so many hate having a thief on their team. You can’t always count on them, and a team that litteraly does all they can to prevent the thief from being useful (teamates who push all nodes all game), you are in for an uphill battle. When playing with a thief, the team needs to push hard somewhere and count on the thief to either decap or force an enemy back, so they the main fight is in your favor. If he is not accomplishing that, thief is sort of useless.

Ya, the season start was shameful. Worst release of a pvp season ever. The games kept getting more and more competitive as I moved up the divisions. Ruby has actually been a more variable environment, but I’m hoping diamond will be back to being a bit more balanced, since you can’t easily get there with willpower alone. (Ruby you can get into if you just play enough, although I’m proud of the number of games I played to get into Ruby)

I have to admit I was surprised, and disapointed by the playstyle of the thief. I have already moved away from d/p meta build. I found it useful for some matchups, but not as great for others. (Running staff now, which I had advocated against at start of season, but I found a really solid build)

Thief in the pro league was really slow on rotations, not getting decaps instantly, and maybe he was just having a bad day. (I know when I’m tired, I can’t play thief, at all.)

Either way, I don’t think the game did a good job to show what a thief can do. So many bad calls in that game, hopefully we get some better thieves (not better control wise, he was spot on, but better map awareness) in future tournaments.

The only losing streaks of larger than 2 losses I’ve had this season are when I’ve queued with lower MMR players.

Sadly the new matchmaking only works well if you play solo or in a group with coordinated builds and similar skill level.

Ya, playing with friends has been a big no no this season. I’ve lost all but one game (out of almost 20), and yet solo, my win rate is about 70-80%.

I’m really not sure based on the wording of the OP. But I would be okay with playing on someone’s account they think is rigged against them and getting them a nearly full page of victories. Would be how I could see testing this.

I myself tried playing games with a friend (not super skilled) and we lost 12 games in a row. It was horrible, since then I tried playing again, and lost 5 games with him (and his gf for some of it). Honestly, outside of those matches, worse has been about 3 loses in a row. (Maybe 4 or 5, but I don’t remember it) So if the argument is that after X loses you can’t get back to winning, that is a lie, unless something different happens with duo-queuing.

I recently started trying to finish my achievements, so I had to run something other than thief. I got this far with thief (tier 3 ruby), but I still need 3 wins with necro and 2 with ele before I can go back to thief only.

I also found that changing professions led me to having less balanced matches. Like the system didn’t know how to measure my changed skill. Most of my games as thief ended very close. Not sure, if that is due to the nature of thief, (being so mobile helps with bad games, to keep score closer) or due to me playing better with thief.

Either way, having better matches this season, although I think I enjoyed last season a little more. (Funny enough) I miss tanky amulets a bit. (hambow, best meta)

Make a thief, try to use sb 5, steal or shadowstep anywhere on map. 90% of the time it fails due to NO VALID PATH bug. The map is real garbage, whoever made it didn’t keep in mind classes that rely on teleport spells.

And this. And honestly, I hadn’t heard the suggestion for making the panels all drop you to a lower level where you can jump back up, costing time. I think that would be way better. Then, the glass panels at A & C can stay. With those changes, along with the others you last posted I would keep Skyhammer in unranked.

Lastly, but unrelated, a lot of us loved courtyard, please bring it back as a separate mode (with both ranked and unranked) Felt very different from Stronghold and Conquest, and was totally worth playing from time to time.

Thank a lot for your advice. I think I’ll go for the legend crafting. My issue is I can never save much money, so having something I can spend on little by little would make it more achievable. I will have to level crafting, which is such a bore, and with how easy it used to be, I used to level characters with crafting, but I deleted them and now I’m stuck at 200 weaponsmithing.

I have still never had an ascended weapon, so even getting that would be a huge benefit. Looking forward to it, now I just need to not fall asleep while I push up to 500 weaponsmithing.

My opinion, albeit brief.

Stability change was for the better in pvp. It is nice to have other means than boon strip to counter low stacks of stability. And adds interesting gameplay.

Stability change did not work well in wvw, where the number of players casting cc can vary greatly.

This is my truth on the stability change. I know a-net doesn’t like to see different skills in wvw/pvp/pve, but I’d like to see the stability change only take effect in pvp, with wvw and pve going back to the old model. (perhaps just wvw even)

Reduce damage of skyhammer.

Add multiple ways to get to skyhammer. (to avoid traps)

Open up the skyhammer space a bit (about 200 yards extra space across)

Remove the 3 falling platforms at A & C

Increase the time it takes for sky hammer to turn, making it slower to respond all over the map.

I think those are the main things keeping this map from being an enjoyable experience on average. I have had fun on the map, but usually when people ignore the skyhammer lol.

I have never done a fractal, but am considering trying, and for legends, I still haven’t earned one (I mostly pvp).

I have always wanted a legendary, but would crafting make it more accessible. (keep in mind, I have never had over 300 gold, as I always end up spending on things that interest me for cheaper) I could never save the money for a precursor. Is it satisfying and cheaper to craft?

Trust me if you want more to hold a point long enough 2v1 for help to show up you can make a build work. For me to do that, I found I only needed to include acrobatics, and high evasion builds (still running maurauder). I actually switched away from that playstyle though, as thief mobility, damage and cc is super important for winning bigger fights. I think thief is strong now, and doesn’t suck. I do think having more than 1 thief can be detrimental, but the skill of the two teams is more important, as I’ve won quite a few games playing as 2, or even 3 thieves. (Funny enough, I have better success with 3 thief teams than 2, not sure why)

Even my build, which is not meant to 1v1, can pressure some classes enough to decap the point. I can easily kill rangers, decap engies, beat necros, beat zerker dh, easily beat mesmer, beat other thieves, and I am one of the few that can completely wreck ele in team fights when they seem unkillable, the amount of cc you can add with headshots, impact strike, fist of fury, leg sweep, just makes it really hard for them to stay up.

I’d say that a good thief brings a lot to conquest, however, not just is the class hard to make work, you need teamates that know how to react to having a thief. When I run to far, get a decap and at that moment the guy who shouldve been holding mid shows up and starts capping far, while the 1 enemy decapped mid, I get annoyed a bit, but that guy didn’t realize I was about to be back on mid in less than 2 seconds (as I had used shadowstep → shadowreturn to decap and be back in the action)

Thief is more unique than people think, but rev still has too much mobility in my opinion and it needs another 3 seconds on his cooldown of shirostep. And reaper just brings too much pressure, but I think they just need to make it harder to pull off, as reaper is borderline faceroll if you have a good build.

[Suggestion] Next elite spec?

Posted by: Loboling.5293

Loboling.5293

Ever since I knew classes would get new weapons, I’ve had some in my mind that I really hope make it into the game. I’ll ignore other classes, cause ele elemental sword with teleports and cool animations was something I was also really looking forward to.

Greatsword: I always pictured getting a backstab on someone with a greatsword. The way I saw the skill, it was more like shadowstep behind someone and stab them from behind. Of course for balance reasons, the skill would deal much lower damage than dagger backstab, since it teleports you behind and strikes all at once (like sword 2), and in the same vein I think it would teleport you back. So kind of a sword 2 full combo, but with a greatsword, and leaves you distant. I think there should be a lot of deflections and blocks, so when you are fighting attacks can’t hit you well due to blocking projectiles and other strikes, but I didn’t want to have a lot of evasion. More focused on smashing opponent strikes to avoid them, while also occasionally teleporting behind them and striking them with a giant greatsword.

So that is my top choice for Thief’s next elite spec.

Sniper: I know a lot of people don’t see how to balance it, but frankly I still want to see it. If the actual snipe skill is a stealth skill, and the weapon has no way to access stealth, the thief will rely on combos with traits, or utility skills to access the all powerful snipe skill. I would love to see a long ranged snipe build for thief, but only after we get a type of bruiser greatsword wielder. (with mad teleports, lots of blocks and reflects, but no evasion)

Off-hand torch: This is not my favorite, but I would like to see a more damaging offhand for conditions with creative skills. (Smash the ground with your torch, emitting a powerful blinding flash blinding everyone within 1200 yards of the point of impact every second for 3 seconds. During the 3 seconds a fire spreads from the point of impact up to 600 yards inflicting burning. And other cool skills. Maybe another skill that creates a mirage and when the clone is attacked, the person killing it is struck with 2 stacks of burning. Stuff like that. All about subterfuge, burning and blinds.

After those, I suppose I wouldn’t mind seeing a off-hand shield, longbow, and other cool weapons, but I would firstly love a bruiser, then a long ranged fighter, and finally a condition damage dealer that can keep up in terms of raw damage with some of the other condition damage dealers.

Best part of playing thief is I get a comment every few games from people who thank me for not sucking. XD

I remember when I sucked at thief, learning the ins and outs takes time, so if you are new and getting lots of wins, you are probably not yet facing the better players yet. However, good luck to anyone making it work. I think thief is awesome this season, it hasn’t been this strong in while. (almost at the same level as when it was meta about 3-4 balance patches ago)

Keep it up, and keep practicing if you want to get good at thief. It is a very fluid class, and you need to play it that way. If you focus too heavily on one thing, you are not reaching the potential of this a.d.h.d. martial artist.

But seriously, I wouldn’t be against giving moa more damage. I have killed a few players as a moa, but it is so rare for it to be the right thing to do. Giving some more offense, and maybe dropping the cooldown of the 5 skill by 1-2 seconds.

The only thing that could be nerfed for mesmer is Moa. Everything else is balanced, and Moa is mostly balanced too, but it forces you to be aware that it might happen and be prepared to leave the point. Mes is a hard class, and frankly I hate any meta where teams are running more than one. However, it is just because with multiple mesmer the game gets too cluttered. They bring strong utility and good pressure, but as a trade off are easy to burst down. (good ones can run, but they can be easily forced out of position, just as they can do with you on a long cooldown with moa.)

If the new stats are just for the legend version, that would make some (slight) sense. But if the ascended version has access to these stats, then anyone who grabbed it before yesterday is limited by the old choices for stats.

I can’t speak for everyone, but my frustration with the games comes from having experienced the first 2 years of the game. It felt more alive (megaservers help with events, but they damage community). WvW was oodles of fun, and I felt a true sense of immersion in the zone. Spvp is still good imo, but they recently released a ranked season that forced players to have terrible matches for the beginning. (either you facerolled, or got facerolled) Living world updates were frequent, and even though they claim the quality was not great, it was fun and exciting to see the world change around us. The expansion (and patches leading up to it) have damaged the community, and it shows to players who have been playing since launch. Otherwise, you would be right, it is still a great game, but it just feels like it’s gotten worse instead of better, which is disappointing. (10/10 → 8/10) Also, the expansion was the same price as the core game, but was just a fraction of the value, a big frustration point.

Rev Or Thief - PvP/WvW

in Thief

Posted by: Loboling.5293

Loboling.5293

Both are viable, thief is more of a roamer, and plays the decap role better. Rev can sustain on a point much better. So they are similar in some ways, but depends how much you want sustain vs unhindered mobility. (no need for a target) I do however hope they nerf Rev mobility a bit, so thieves always have the edge, as revs always have the edge in terms of sustain. I’d also say thief takes more practice and skill to pull off. Bad thieves hurt their team more than help, and it sucks to be on a team with them.

Mesmer needs a massive nerf.

Tone down some of the real outliers. Loboling.5293

I wanted to give some feedback, glad to see a thread on the actual gw2 forums with a red. (This coming from someone who worked into sapphire and almost done)

Matchmaking is fine (once you play up to your league). But leading up to that, you will have such bad games, most players will want to quit. I did, I was so tired of 37-500, 60-500, etc games. They are beyond boring. Now, I haven’t had a game where the enemy didn’t score at least 200 points, and many 4XX-500 games. The matches have gotten a lot more competitive as I move up the league.

So the problem is the season start. It was terrible, so here are my suggestions:

1) Keep league rewards, but seperate them from divisions. We need a pip based reward track that simply tracks our wins and losses and gives us rewards in the exact same way as now. This goes with part two.

2) Players start next season close to their current division.
Amber -> Amber
Emerald -> Amber
Sapphire -> Emerald
Ruby -> Sapphire
Diamond -> Sapphire
Legend ->Sapphire

This way, players less experienced with pvp will not face anyone in sapphire or above from this season. And players Ruby and above will all start off competing. Since rewards are no longer directly tied to division, players can accrue the same rewards no matterr what division they start in.

For those who haven’t played enough of this season (or those who simply belong in amber/emerald) they will not have to worry about getting steamrolled by legend players who will obviously excel again in the next season. This games pvp comes down the rotations, team plays, good build making, and objectives. All these things carry over (with builds sometimes changing some).

Do not make the same mistake next season and force everyone into Amber. It will put the nail in the coffin. I almost quit before I was out of amber, as I couldn’t take such extreme faceroll.

I hope you are still reading this thread. Also please let us continue to play ranked between seasons. Allowing us to keep our division for matchmaking. (or do the switch early, and allow preseason adjustments to occur.)

Overall, good job with the matchmaking, but please remember we are not robots, and our feelings get affected by playing these games. Playing 10-40 bad games to start enjoying yourself sucks. (and for those in the lower division, almost never since good players may start later in the season in amber and ruin their matches.) Thanks.

This is from some games I got to play today. With a new build (d/p, instead of p/p). The build is not as good at 1v1, but it can support team fights better.

I still think thief is in a good spot. Still there needs to be some nerfs to some OP builds. Not much, but something is still needed. Two of those victories, I ended up on 2 thief teams. All done soloq. Also, one of my losses is from a 4v5 d/c so I lost no pips

Still having fun on thief, and I want to start to work out a few good builds and swap depending on the matchups. Some games, I have to 1v1 so much, and some my teamates know how to rotate. It is hard to tell which build will work best, but I’m going to give it a shot before the season ends.

A simple fix for matchmaking that might work?

Loboling.5293

The more games I played, the more competitive they became. I would now say that the quality of games is equal to season 1 at least, and I’m enjoying the system.

My big problem with it is the start. They shouldn’t expect people to have to play multiple unfun games (500-57, 500-39, 500-80) to get to the point where the system works. I had win streaks at times that forced me to log out of boredom, as they were complete steamrolls. For next season they need to do something to change how the season starts. Some people have suggested things, and I’ll leave it to them. But early season was a bad joke. 1/10 games was enjoyable. Now I get many games 490-500, 476-500. Much more balanced matches. The steamrolls have become 180-500, or 230-500, which are much more fun to play when both teams can at least leave spawn.

I really like the idea of a longer stealth duration for cloak and dagger. Would balance the sets more due to the higher risk in getting into stealth with cloak and dagger. I think 5 seconds would be balanced, but 4 seconds would work well too.

I don’t have much recent experience on s/d, so I won’t comment.

Warriors are underpowered right now because of the insane power creep every other class has experienced.

This is the biggest problem for thief as well. A few nerfs to some of the classes that are too strong would help a lot.

Buffing Thief (PVP)

My biggest focus is that buffing thief should be done with the intention of helping the less used weaponsets and abilities. The last thing I want is thief to become overpowered, but some skills are simply under preforming.

My last pvp match, I went in to 1v1 a thief taking their home node, I had my shortbow out and was a little worried, as thief vs thief fights can turn fast. Then I saw the thief place 3 traps at his feet on the point and I knew the fight was won. There was no hope for him.

I’m not against helping underutilized weapon sets, but the devs have to be careful. I don’t agree with changing the reveal time to 3 seconds, just because it would help d/p. I don’t think d/p needs any buffs right now. Helping make s/p less clunky with skill 3, and perhaps some slight improvements to s/d and d/d through buffing skill 4 would be nice.

I started this thread, cause I believe thief is doing well right now, but as with most classes could use some buffs to things that simply under preform. The devs a while back had said they would focus on this for all classes, but have yet to really accomplish anything. Playing thief without shadowstep is not usually viable, and I don’t think we should nerf it, because thief is well balanced right now, and nerfing their good skills would simply make the whole profession underwhelming. They need to bring up the utilities, healing skills, elites, and traits that see almost no action today. They have the data, they need to simply do it. For all professions. But I play thief as my main today, and I feel most passionate about it.

Perhaps it would be best to demand this on the pvp forums (or reddit, for some reason), and make the request for all professions. I’m sure some guardians want to run spirit weapons, or warriors physical skills, but there is no justification for them. They simply suck. Please A-Net, help these skills not suck and the meta would be much more flexible, with each match being far more varied and interesting.

You can pay some guy with good MMR to team with you and you will win every game you play to fix your MMR.

Lies. I had my only loss streak when playing with a friend and his gf. They were terrible, and there is nothing 1 good player can do to counter having two bad players on his roaster every match. Nice people, but I still have nightmares of those matches. Maybe if the player is good enough to routinely win 2v1s, but I don’t think that should happen in spvp if the other players aren’t incompetent. At most you should be able to 1v1 others, if you are winning 2v1 and 3v1, you are playing bads. Sure it happens, but to carry another player is more difficult than it sounds.

Looking forward to even more changes to wvw. So tired of encountering others players there….

I don't want to play another character.

I don’t think playing other classes are a requirement. I could be wrong as I did part one one 3 professions, but part 2 was all done on thief. I now have my ascended backpiece, and working on legend.

I really think there are some problems with matchmaking, but this post deserves a +1. /great advice, and the biggest hurdle for most players.

I WANT to get BETTER at this game.

I still haven’t been killed by a staff thief yet this season. Sure they can dodge a lot, but the damage has very obvious tells. Although I can maybe see it working in teamfights, but I rarely spend much time in team fights on my thief.

If all else fails, reroll condi mesmer. I didn’t encounter a hero challenge I couldn’t solo. I think it is the best solo class for doing the hero challenges. It is disgustingly easy at times. Since doing them on thief was so difficult. Ranger should be easy, but without good stealth some will be much harder. Reaper also made short work of most, but some were hard too.

Sorry, but Thief is very viable in this Meta. Much more than last season. With my current build I can 1v1 any class, and I feel bad for reapers when I fight them 1v1.

Why are reapers letting you 1v1 them? o_O

What you mean? Do you mean, why are reapers ever alone on a point? Or why are they not running (they can, if I let them), or why do they lose? Go into a dueling server on a reaper against a good thief and you will see why they lose the fight. As for being alone on a point, it is usually minion master reapers, but also sometimes condi reapers get left alone on a point (this is solo queue after all). As for running when they see a thief show up, it is usually better to try and hold the point for backup, and with the right build they can last quite a while, but since reapers cant really deal damage to daredevils due to obvious animations and easy to dodge skills, its a guaranteed loss eventually. I’d say daredevils hard counter reapers in 1v1.

Since thieves can jump from mid to the far point for a decap so fast, you either leave someone there, or try and out rotate and win mid decisively. I will usually wait for the enemy to be just far enough that they can’t stop the decap, but close enough that they feel compelled to run back and recap, meanwhile I’m back mid fighting 5v4. I often save shadowstep for these plays, and use the return to get back into mid as fast as possible.

My results speak for themselves, but it is true that a good team makes decaps much harder, but they face constant home pressure when playing against a thief.

Stop bringing warr/thief/mesmer into this meta… they don’t work. You have to work twice as hard to make them work. I get it, I do, thief, and warrior were/are my two favorite classes for pvp. I want ANET to make them viable again but at this point in time. NO they just don’t work. It’s not the classes fault, it’s just how their designed right now. No shame in switching something more viable but seriously. These current classes do NOT work. I can’t count right now the number of times I have lost a game cause of those particularly classes. I know it sounds elitist to type this, and yes I sound salty, cause I’m at the final tier, and was so close only to lose it because someone believed the hype that “Yes THEY are viable” No they are nottttttt. Had a rifle warr just run around dying off point, while the reapers/druids/dh saw him and were like hahaha lunch…. game before that had a thief who was dying at far everytime.. and then ran around the map doing idk what but he was NOT contributing in any way, despite him TRYING I mean he WAS trying I’ll give him that but man… they knew/know how to conter a daredevil… they do NOT work the enemy team has to be complete imbeciles for them to work.

/rant

you are incorrect

Good to know. I guess thief just still counters warrior, so I don’t feel like they do much. Warriors have it almost as bad as necro when fighting thief. There attacks in general are too slow, and easy to evade
