My babe Shíku.

She used to be a dude, then one day I realized how boring it was that all my GW2 toons are male, so I decided to turn my thief female. I’m happy that I did. I think she looks a lot cooler now than she did as a dude.

My PUG story...

Since we’re sharing PUG stories, here’s another funny one:

I was doing AC p1 with terribad ele who didn’t even summon frost bows and FGSs during the burrow section. the DPS of the party was horrible and I think the only 2 people running meta builds in that instance was myself and my brother. Then after failing the burrow section for the 3rd time the ele started bossing us around. I told him he had no right to boss people around and that his DPS sucked and he needed to drop some ice bows and FGSs for us so we could take down those burrows faster. He said he couldn’t do that because he was a “healer ele” and it was “his job” to heal the party so us “zerker noobs” wouldn’t go down. Obviously after he said that I decided to vote kick him. That vote got seconded rather quickly. Sadly enough the ele turned out to be the instance owner so we all got kicked from the instance. That kinda sucked.

^
See, this is why NOT having an instance owner is a GOOD thing.

Erm, strangely enough, I have been in the same situation as you. But things went like this. Langrim would kick this ‘phiw’ ele, I seconded. A moment after we put up the LFG, this ele re-joined and kicked Langrim. Someone seconded. Then I quickly re-invited Langrim, and then we get stuck in the vicious kick-invite cycle. And know what??? It was in our own LFG (as we only kick in our instance). We could give up and leave and they could have stolen the whole instance outright. If it’s AC, no problems. But if it’s Arah or Fractals, well, it’s hard not to ruin our evening.

Well, this is why NOT having an instance owner is a HUGE PROBLEM.

Your story doesn’t really add up.

In order to kick someone, you need at least 2 people wanting that person to be kicked. If the ele was the only griefer in your party and everyone agreed that he needed to be removed, then how could he come back and start a “kick cycle”? Who was the 2nd person willing to kick you and Langrim and why would they want to kick you guys? Obviously you and Langrim must have done something wrong. I doubt you two are as innocent as you claim to be, else this “kick cycle” would never have happened.

Also @LucosTheDutch: Since that ele was the instance owner, he probably started the lfg and according to your story you provoked him first, you guys are the ones that griefed him. At least the previous system discouraged players like you from doing kitten like that since it punished you as well. I’m not saying he was right though and he was probably as bad as you make him out to be.

Maybe you didn’t read my post carefully, or maybe I explained it poorly, but I did not provoke anyone. I said the ele started bossing people around, not me. We didn’t grief anyone and we didn’t even know he was the instance owner.

The previous system was horrible and here is why: The instance owner was not determined by who started the party or who started LFG (which was me, not him), but who entered the instance first (which was him, not me).
I was the one who started my own LFG for AC p1. The ele joined my party. However, the ele was already inside AC when he joined, while I was still in Plains of Ashford. This is the reason why he was instance owner and not me. I didn’t know it worked that way either until then.

I had every single right to kick the ele from my party that I started and everyone else in the party agreed he had to be kicked because he was being the kitten, not me. Sadly, because he started the instance before me, the game considered him to be the instance owner and therefor kicked all of us when we removed him from the party.

The ele sucked and he was a kitten, he deserved to get kicked, sadly because of the old flawed system, we all got kicked as a result. Luckily that’s no longer the case with the new system, hence the new system is vastly superior to the old one.

When I’m not dungeon touring with the boys from [OP] I also do PUG runs.

This is my PUG story:

LucosTheDutch is a happy little bloke who usually has no problem with PUGs at all, until he runs into people like Langrim. He then happily seconds a kick request when it pops up. Sure, Langrim might be more familiar with the meta, he might even be a better player, but that doesn’t matter when you’re being an egocentric kitten who really needs to learn some basic social skills.
When LucosTheDutch does PUG runs, he cares more about a good atmosphere and good teamwork where people actually show some patience and help each other out in a friendly way when needed. People like Langrim offer the opposite. People like him often create a toxic environment where good people leave on their own accord or get kicked for no good reason. LucosTheDutch doesn’t like that and he simply wishes to finish his dungeon runs without needless drama. Therefor LucosTheDutch kicks people like Langrim from the party.

Personally I think Glacial Heart is just as poop as Searing Flames, if not more so. It’s too situational to be of any reliable use. 2k healing per meditation use is way better (don’t forget that Renewed Focus is a meditation too since the last feature patch!).

Glacial Heart is still terrible and not worth taking. If they actually wanted to make it usable they could do a number of things:

1) Keep it currently as is it, but add a damage multiplier to hammer.

2) Keep the 15 second CD, however make it apply to all weapons.

3) Simply reduce the CD further.

Completely agree.

Hell even making it an Adept trait instead of a Master trait would already be a welcome improvement.

Seriously, such a crappy trait has no reason to be in the Master colum. What was Anet thinking?

So why and for what did you make this build OP?

Don’t listen to people who say “don’t follow the meta”. They don’t know what they’re talking about.

Follow the meta and get yourself a berserker set with scholar runes. Then figure out what meta build you want to play. There is plenty of diversity and plenty of meta builds to choose from depending on which weapons you want to use.

Do you want to be a great support to your team while killing stuff quickly? Play meta.

Do you want to be slow and hold your team back? Don’t play meta.

The choice is yours.

Please, do not forget the Hammer 3 and the Hammer 5….

But anyways… I’m a new guardian… I will try this …. there’s nothing to loose…

If this build isn’t work I can get in the lane as a Gua a be good… hopefully

I didn’t forget about H 3 and 5, those where the skills I was talk about. As a guardian with a GS and H you have 1 stun, 1 wall and 1 pull.

Stun = H3
Wall = H5
Pull = GS5

All of them are painfully easy to avoid by a running enemy.

You can try your build or one of the versions I gave you but I’ll tell you this; if you really like the idea of playing a defensive interceptor with great team support and good burst damage, reroll a warrior and play that. Warrior is and always will be far superior to a guardian when it comes to crowd control and locking an enemy down.

Why not Swiftness runes?

Because you don’t have any sources of swiftness to give to yourself or your party other than the #4 bonus of the Swiftness runes. Those runes would be better if you’re going for a supportive staff guardian with shouts. You’re not playing that kind of guardian though and Traveler runes or Pack runes suit your role a whole lot better. They give you a better stat boost and more offensive capabilities. Not to mention the 10% condition duration that the Traveler runes give you which will increase the time of your burns and your stuns (not by a whole lot but every but helps).
The +15% extra boon duration will help a lot on a meditation guardian. It will make your fury last longer and the boons you get from Contemplation of Purity as well.
The extra vitality that Swiftness runes give you is negligible so that shouldn’t be a reason to go for Swiftness runes.

Why do you want to go defensive though? With the playstyle you have in mind an offensive build would suit your needs so much better. You can still be defensive with 6 in Honor to get Force of Will, not to mention that your real defenses are your active defenses (blocks, dodges, condi-cleanses and boons). You can be a zerky DPS guardian and still be defensive. Once you get comfortable with your guardian and start relying on your (better) active defenses (blocks, dodges, condi-cleanse and boons) and less on passive defenses (armor and vitality) you’ll realize that you really don’t need 20k health or 3000 armor. Those extra points in power and ferocity will be much more beneficial.

EDIT: If you get into the dungeon meta and run a lot of dungeon speed clears on a zerker guardian with scholar runes you’ll quickly learn how powerful your active defenses are. In that situation you have no other choice than to rely on those active defenses because bosses can 1-shot you on such a glassy dungeon build. But trust me, after doing it for a while you’ll have plenty of gold for Traveler runes and you’ll be a lotttttt better at understanding and properly using your guardian’s active defenses. You’ll be able to return to WvW with less vitality and armor but more DPS and you’ll actually feel really powerful and confident with it. That’s how it went for me at least!

EDIT 2: As for your build idea. I can see it sort-of work, but at the same time I’m not so sure. The problem with guardian that uses a GS + H is that it has only 1 stun, 1 wall and 1 pull, which are all painfully easy to dodge by skilled players who know what a guardian can do. The idea of an interception guardian is good, but I think you’re looking at the wrong weapons. A sword/focus as your secondary weapon set might actually suit your need a lot better. sword 2 has an amazing gab-closer that also acts as a blind, which will allow you to then switch to GS and put Binding Blades on your runner. If your target then continues to run you can pull him/her back to you and do some amazing burst damage with Whirling Wrath. make sure you’re exactly right on top of your target with WW, that way all your projectiles will hit him/her for maximum DPS.

EDIT 3: Sorry for the extremely long post. I’m terrible at keeping my points short and condensed.

Made some minor changes that will make your build a lot more bursty and you’ll have more health too!

I changed Battle Presence to Force of Will because Battle Presence is poop especially without Absolute Resolution.

You say you don’t want to change your runes but you really should though. Swiftness runes are way worse than Traveler runes on a guardian (unless you’re using staff or shouts, and even then I’d say Pack runes or Traveler runes are both better than Swiftness runes).

Seriously, suck it up, run some dungeons and replace those runes! I didn’t change the runes in my altered version of your build, but I that doesn’t change the fact that I think you should.

EDIT: Once you’re comfortable with your medi-guard and you’ve saved up gold for those Traveler runes, change your build to this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVQQJARSlsApaodDxcI8DRR8gY1oqCg50oX/LYOA-TVCEwAQOCA23fol6PRVqsVJITlVd0FA4BA84SAEAABgbezbezbezSBExyI-w

You’ll be doing tons of damage with that build and probably get the runner down all by yourself without the need of your palls!

Does dps-only pve limit gear, trait, or both?

in Guardian

Posted by: LucosTheDutch.4819

LucosTheDutch.4819

For gear in PvE, use full Berserkers or Assassins gear with Scholar runes or Ranger runes. Those are the meta options. Anything else will be a loss of DPS, which is not good because in PvE you want as much DPS as you can. As a guardian your role in the group will be that of a supporter who keeps everyone alive, but if you think of support as a tank or healer you’re wrong, that’s now how guardians work in GW2 PvE. Your support capabilities will come from your traits, virtues, weapon skills and utility skills. You’ll constantly be negating incoming damage for yourself and your team by applying blindness to the enemies while applying boons such as aegis, protection and regeneration to your team. You’ll also be the main source of condition-removal for your team with the trait ‘Absolute Resolution’ and the focus 4 skill.

Traits and weapons are flexible and can be changed depending on your preferences, playstyle and most importantly your team composition.

The general rule of thumb is that greatsword deals the most burst damage, 1h sword deals the most sustained DPS and hammer gives the best support in fights where you stack together. Staff is great in random LFG teams and gives a lot of extra support while scepter is the best choice for ranged DPS. For off-hand always go focus. I personally really like the sword/focus combo and it’s one of the most popular weapon combos for the guardian in both WvW, PvP and PvE. it offers a lot of blinds, blocks, a teleport, condi-cleanse and a projectile reflect. It’s really super good.

Hey Harbinger I love all of the work you have done for this thread and for guardians! I was wondering if there are any stat combinations that would work well with Nomad stats or if Nomads is even viable at all with a guardian, preferably in WvW? I was thinking of trying to make a build with them but everyone seems to hate them and finds them useless/bad.

I actually use Nomad when I run with my havoc group, and I’m playing support. I pair it with Cleric and Knight trinkets and use a 0/0/2/6/6 build.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQJASWlsApWotCxfH8DNRCRldR8fBI2fwJkCXFAA-TVyDABMcEA6V9HpUSdlylBVCCwFAAPdBKt/AEPCASB81yI-w

imo Nomad gear is stupid and ‘healing power’ scales horribly.

Just to give you an idea how horrible the ‘healing power’ stat is. Replace all your Nomad and Cleric gear with Soldier. Now look at the difference of how much ‘shelter’, your main healing skill, heals you. With your Nomad+Cleric setup, ‘shelter’ heals for 5,3k. Now with all those pieces replaced by Soldier, it heals for 4,7k. That’s only a 500 HP difference, on your MAIN healing skill, whooptie-fokkin-doo…

If you want some extra healing just use mango pies, water sigils, renewal sigils and/or leeching sigils, that will give you plenty of extra healing so you can use better gear with more useful stats making you a more useful part of the team.

Seriously, screw the horrible ‘healing power’ stat and screw all gear with ‘healing power’.

So I’ve gotten 100% world map completion on my guardian toon last week, yet I don’t have all the exploration achievements. I know some exploration achievements aren’t tied to map completion and I’m not talking about those. I’m talking about the Kryta Explorer, Ascalon Explorer, Maguuma Explorer, etc. etc. etc. Those achievements require you to “discover” all map sections. The problem is, this game has map sections with nothing on them, so those are easy to miss when you do map completion.

So my question is, is there a list with all the empty map sections somewhere to be found? Or could perhaps one of you guys help me find the map sections that I’m missing for these exploration achievements?

You say GW2 is unique and doesn’t need elves, orcs and goblins etc, yet that’s EXACTLY what GW2 has.

Sure, on face value the races in GW2 might look completely different from the typical fantasy races, but are they really all that different? Sylvari are pretty much the wood-elves/pixies of GW2, charr are the orcs of GW2 and asura as the goblins/gnomes of GW2. Kodan are GW2’s pandaren and the norn are a lot like the Elder Scrolls’s nords.

That said, I’d like to play as a tengu. Yes, I know they’re already in the game and already exist, but I truly think the tengu are awesome and one of the most unique races in Tyria.

As for a completely new race; something similar to WoW’s worgen would be cool (though come to think of it the norn are already pretty much the same as worgen, except the norn can transform into 4 different animal forms and their transformation isn’t a curse but a blessing).

Lore and Legendary Weapons

in Lore

Posted by: LucosTheDutch.4819

LucosTheDutch.4819

but then, I think the lore is better off without rainbow-surfing unicorns and disco balls.

And that’s exactly what my post is about. Not only do the legendary weapons in GW2 not have any connection to the lore, they also feel completely disconnected from the game aesthetics-wise. Unicorn-shooting rainbows (get it, rain-bows, hahaha, not funny? okay…) and confetti-shooting clown pistols completely break immersion and feel more like troll weapons than actual legendary weapons.

Lore and Legendary Weapons

in Lore

Posted by: LucosTheDutch.4819

LucosTheDutch.4819

I’m not sure if this has already been discussed, my apologies if this is a duplicate topic, but I wanted to discuss the legendary weapons and their place in the lore… or lack there of…

This is something I never understood. Here we have a big world with a ton of lore and a lot of regular and exotic weapons have a bit of lore to it or a connection to the world of Guild Wars 2, but when it comes to legendary weapons they feel completely detached from the world and lore. They’re more like immersion-breaking e-troll weapons not worthy of the title “legendary” (with the exception of a few). Why?

I hate to bring up “that other MMO who’s still the #1 MMO on the market” but that game did it right. The legendary weapons in World of Warcraft all have a rich history and a line of previous owners. When you finally get all the pieces to reforge the legendary weapon you where hunting down you feel like super awesome. These legendaries are also actually hard to get and you’ll never see 10+ people using the same legendary on the same map (which is the case during an average boss fight in GW2, you’ll always see at least 10 people with a Twilight or a Sunrise). If you get a legendary in WoW, it’s actually legendary. The amount of people having the same weapon as you will be countable on 1 hand. This makes legendaries feel truly legendary.

Now I’m not saying that I want legendary weapons in GW2 to be more difficult to obtain (though I wouldn’t complain if this where to be the case), but I do wish the legendaries in GW2 actually had some lore behind them and a connection to the GW2 world.

What do you guys think?

I got kicked because I already started killing the first mob in AC while we where waiting for the last party member. No, I’m not talking about the spider queen, I’m talking about LITERALLY the first mob when you enter the dungeon.

What the shield should have gotten was an Aegis application on one of its 30s or 40s CD skills. While most people with a shield block a series of attacks when activated, at least give the guardian an abilities to offer a block to all allies to compensate. Aegis already gives an array of items such as retaliation, healing, dmg, etc, if traited. I think it would be a good addition to the shield, being it’s already the most unused guardian tool in the game.

+1

This simple change would definitely bring the shield up to the same level as the focus and torch (well, maybe not quite the same level as focus, because focus is really ridiculously good, but it would definitely put shield on the same level as torch). Make it happen Anet!

Looks similar to my build, except for the gear. I don’t know about your gear choice. It seems kinda random to me. Your build has decent power, toughness, vitality and ferocity, but severely lacks in precision. I’d try to get your crit chance up to at least 30%, so that when you activate your meditation to get your fury, you’ll be at 50% crit chance, which means half of your attacks will crit, which is very nice.

Why did you put a sigil of precision on your mace btw? Seems kinda random to me. Your DPS will come from your greatsword, not your mace, so why precision on your mace?

Based on your suggestions, I altered my build and went 6 points into Radiance. Please check it out and let me know what you think: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAR8dlsApcoVDxbI8DNR8gY9nWbqKw1/CmD-ThCBAB7pb4SVcEa/huUqcmSQJOCAYpsCgLCQmqHwwDAIAACwNvZ2sNDO6RP6RP6R7oH9oH9oHtUAMpMC-e

While I can see where you’re coming from, I feel that I give up a lot of defense if I go 6 into Radiance instead of 6 into Honor, for probably only a bit more DPS. Let’s take a look:

What I give up:
- 5000 HP health
- 100 power (from the sharpening stones that scales off toughness and vitality)
- getting vigor when I crit, allowing me to dodge more often
- dodge heals, which heal me for 465 HP per dodge
- Aegis heal which heals me for 779 HP on aegis removal
- 300 healing power, which isn’t really noteworthy to me but still
- 20% cooldown reduction on my greatsword, my main weapon of choice
- 10% extra damage when endurance is not full (pretty much always)

What I get in return:
- roughly 15% extra crit chance, 30% extra crit chance for 1h sword
- 300 extra condition damage, which isn’t really noteworthy imo
- blind when activating virtue of justice
- 5 stacks of vulnerability when blinding a foe, which is super nice
- renewing virtue of justice when killing a foe
- 10% extra damage for 1h sword, which is obviously nice
- 10% extra damage on foes with conditions, which is also very nice

Okay, so I can see now how going 6 in Radiance will obviously improve my DPS, but I’m gonna have to learn to rely on my 1h sword for the most DPS. Personally I’m more of a greatsword kind of guy. I do feel though that I’m giving up A LOT of defenses if I’d go for 6 in Radiance.

WvW solo/small group roamer hybrid build

Hey guys, I’m here with a WvW roamer build.
My build is a hybrid DPS/bunk build. It’s supposed to be able to lay the pressure on a single target our small groups of targets while getting support from party members (bunk/support guardian and staff elementalist).

Here’s the link: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAR8dlsApcoVDxbI8DNR8QVVAgdSEFV61/QQkDA-TlSBAB6pbwSVcCc/BuUqYmSwrUWhp6BL8AA04iAAwRAIAACwNvZ2sNDG6QH6QH6QboDdoDdoDtUACqMC-w

As you can see it’s a meditation build. That means it’s a selfish build that doesn’t really offer a lot of support to the team. That’s okay though, because someone else in my standard roaming party already took that role (a hammer support/bunker guardian). However, in cases when I get separated from my party or when we get outnumbered I want to be able to take some hits and survive. The bunk/support guardian in my team is new to GW2 so I don’t want to solely rely on him for my survivability, hence I threw in some toughness and vitality in there to buff up my guard and made him hybrid.
I also tried solo-ing on this build, with mixed results. I feel that I lack the burst to take down annoying ranged enemies who just keep kiting my guardian. I’m not sure if this is due to my lack of skill in dealing with these opponents or due to my build keeping me back. What do you guys think?

I think it’s a decent build and it’s actually quite similar to my personal build except for our choice of gear (you run celestial + berserker where I run a combination of knights, valkyrie and berserker).

I changed your build a tiny bit though. I think with these changes you’ll be a lot more sturdy while your DPS will stay pretty much the same: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAR8dlsApaodDxcI8DNR8QVVAgdSEFV61/QQkDA-T1BBABScRAwS5HAPBAB3fIPdDOqEkU1fCAgAszdmNbzgje0je0je025O35O35OLFQELjA-w

Could you please share your build either here or in the video description? I hate it when people make videos like these and don’t even share their build. Not that I plan on copying your build, I’m just curious.

[OP] recruiting Dungeon Speed Runners

I’m interested in joining!

I main a guardian running a hammer build with whatever utilities and 2nd weapon set is necessarily for the specific situation at hand (S/F for burst, GS for pulls and burst, scep/F for ranged DPS and staff for extra support if needed).

If you want to know my exact build: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQJASRlsApQotCxXI8DRR8gk1Yb/8quAY+cLA-ThRBABXt/o8DPdN5dJAA4JFQp6PmpEUQAlD-e

It’s meta and should get the job done, but I’m willing to alter my build where needed.

I live in Europe (but play on Tarnished Coast, an NA server), which means I might not always be on right after reset (which would be 1:00AM in the night for me), I hope that’s not a problem for you folks.

I’ll swing one of you guys an e-mail with this same info, but feel free to reply here if you read this.

“I’ve ran a hammer build, the hammer is garbage.”

^
Learn 2 play.

The hammer is not garbage, it’s the best support/tank weapon for a guardian in dungeons. I’ve been running a full Berzerker guardian with hammer + whatever else is needed at the moment. I dare say I do a better job at supporting my team with it than you do with your garbage “tank/healer” build, while obviously doing a ton more DPS than you do.

In PUGs I can see your build having potential, MAYBE, but even there I would say a DPS hammer guardian would do better. But when you’re in an experienced full Berzerker team who knows what to do, your build is only going to hold the team back. Lying about your build to such teams and thinking you’re doing them a service is incredibly selfish.

Now I wish I didn’t transfer to Tarnished Coast last year. I’m grinding/speedrunning dungeons right now, mostly because I’ve started to get into crafting legendaries, and I bloody hate PUGs. I used to play on Gandara (EU) but then because of a friend I transfered to Tarnished Coast (USA). Now I’m in doubt whether I want to stay on Tarnished Coast with my buddies or come back to Gandara. I doubt I can convince all of my friends to transfer to Gandara, else I would have done that.

Though decision.

After taking a long break from Guild Wars 2 I decided to come back and now I’m looking for a cool mid-sized social guild who I can do WvW and dungeons with. I’ve been in guilds like AARM and TTS and other 2000+ member guilds, but those kind of guilds aren’t really my thing anymore. I much rather be part of a smaller or medium-sized guild with active players who love to do dungeons and WvW.

When I do WvW I mostly roam with my buddies, but I’d love to make new friends to roam or maybe even zerg with.

When it comes to dungeons I love speedrunning them. I’ve only recently gotten deep into the dungeon meta and my main toon is a Berzerker guardian, though I have a lvl 80 thief, mesmer, warrior and necromancer too.
I know my stuff when it comes to WvW but when it comes to speedrunning dungeons I still have some things to learn. I’m a quick learner though.

Any guild on TC that would fit my tastes and wants to recruit me and maybe some of my buddies?

If possible I would love to get an invite. I recently returned to Guild Wars 2 after a long break and I would love to kill the new Tequatl.

Cheers!
