Malzerius – Thief
Dark Covenant (SBI)
All I gotta say is most of you are in trouble once you can’t Culling Bomb™. (Goes for all servers). It’s the most ridiculous thing in the game WvW-wise. (Besides bad loot tables).
Then real WvW will have happened.
Do we know if they’ve fixed the culling issue yet?
I have a hard time believing that you would rather have a +35 tick and trolls on the forums then tick away at +405 and having an opponent that respects your determination.
Or perhaps you’re just roleplaying as a masochist and I’m being trolled, it’s hard to tell with you TC guys…
First of all, I’m on SBI
Second, you do realize killing me and trolling me are the only two things people can do to me in this game right?
For instance:
They can’t take all my loot when I die
They can’t take my gear and leave me wearing nothing but a robe
They can’t take my house key
They can’t kill my horse and eat it in front of me
They can’t cut off my head and sell it on their vendor
They can’t give me murder counts
They can’t keep me from leveling
They can’t keep me from farming gold
They can’t res kill me
They can’t leave me stranded on an island
They can’t even communicate directly with me in game
All they can do is kill me. I have to actually make a choice to visit this forum to be trash talked so they can’t even troll me without my consent. PvP in this game is very sanitary and nice. So no, I’m not a masochist. I just don’t view a repair bill and a little trash talk as very much of a consequence to losing a fight.
As a Recruitment Ambassador for Sea of Sorrows (#1 wvw tier1 superserver), I would suggest you join us. We have a time between 11:30AM and 12:00PM GMT when we do not have a queue in blue borderlands. If you can fill this timeslot, please whisper me asap. Transfers are usually impossible since so many people want to be a part of the #1 server, but we can coordinate a server blackout to let you transfer over.
A bit about our server:
-Large enough amount of players to save money on siege when taking keeps/towers.
-Active map chat.
-Two weeks of vacation time per year.
-Three (3) days unpaid sick leave. (Based on assumptions that every player puts in eight hour shifts. These hours can be used at will – ie, you do not need to use an entire day for a half-day leave.)
-Military command hierarchy that allows players to know their role. (Disrespect of commanders will result in -50 DKP.)
-Automated voicemail system to notify commanders when you won’t be able to log in.As a new recruit you will be relegated to sentry duty. Each “sentry scout” is required to sit at each crossroads and sentry point and report on map activity. You will be afforded a generous 40 minute lunch break and two ten minute breaks. (Please remember to whisper your commander when you are going to take this time off!! We have had issues in the past.) After two weeks of sentry duty you will be promoted to dolyak escort services, but may be tapped for supply running if you stand out.
If you would like to play at any other time besides 11:30AM-12:00PM GMT, I apologize but this may not work out. Let me know if this sounds appealing to you or anyone else reading and I can forward you the appropriate paperwork. Please do not waste our time as Sea of Sorrows superserver is only interested in dedicated players.
Edit: Forgot to add, we are currently seeking staff elementalists only.
Best. Post. Ever.
Also, just a game mechanics question with regards to this match:
Why isn’t SBI tanking the match this week? I wasn’t online last night so I didn’t get to ask.
And…if TC concentrated on SBI constantly to drive our points down wouldn’t that make it easier for the next Tier 3 opponent to advance to Tier 2 at the next reset? How close are the ratings at this point?
Knowing that SoR is counting on coasting to an easy victory again next week it’s kind of odd that there’s been no effort put forth in response.
Almost forgot to post pics from last nights fights! Pretty fun night overall, had a few more run-ins with TC than normal…they had quite a force out there.
Pic 1 – Leaving bags on the ground nearby is ok
Pic 2 – Leaving bags way over there is not ok
Pic 3 – Action shot from guild group vs zerg battle (I’m about to get smacked!)
I hope you know that you’ve ruined my dream of getting an “in b4 we beat you with even numbers and you only beat us when u have a zerg” post with your post.
Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men
I don’t think it would be possible to be called a bandwagoner if you joined SBI… what are you bandwagoning, the ride down the tiers?
But seriously, come. We need people.
SBI…because no one gets on a rollercoaster for the ride up
All this is going to do is stop children from transferring to other servers. Any adult won’t think twice about paid transfers unless they are homeless and playing from a coffee shop.
If there is one constant in all of the faction based pvp games I have played, it is not once did fighting someone I could dominate ever make me a better player. SoR is getting nothing from these matches other then getting fat and lazy. Most of the good players/guilds will be bored and doing other things, so you just end up with large zerg balls running around pretending they are becoming a better community.
The problem with that statement is that there’s a difference between dominating the scoreboard and dominating the battlefield. SoR doesn’t really dominate the battlefield unless their numbers are vastly greater than their opponents. Don’t take that statement the wrong way, I’m not trying to start any arguments…I’m just offering an honest assessment of what’s happening on the battlefield.
I think, if they’re being honest, your commanders would admit this as well. SoR is losing a lot of battles that shouldn’t even be close. It’s been that way since this matchup started last week so you shouldn’t chalk it up to certain guilds not being active in RvR the last few days. In fact, it was much worse last week than it’s been this week. I guess that can be partially attributed to the overall growth of the SoR zergs that can withstand heavy losses and still manage to gain ground. However, SoS zergs are considerably larger than what SoR is fielding currently so you won’t be able to rely on numbers alone in Tier 1.
Personally I think the blob tactics are probably the wrong way to go while you’re in Tier 2. I’d go with smaller groups and force your players to learn how to fight properly while you still have the chance.
We did not exploit at all.
That thief was actually pretty skilled. Great use of shortbow. You guys can hate thieves all you want but it was pretty obvious they had a big enough window to kill him when he was using the shortbow.
Yeah they had plenty of chances to kill him. It’s almost comical that they didn’t. Here’s my tip of the day…
If you don’t know how to kill a thief, go play a thief for a few days and you’ll figure it out.
Not that we’re throwing the match, but I guess you could say we’re trying not to win by so many points that we are thus prematurely moved to Tier 1. Please don’t misunderstand, we want to win and we want to get to Tier 1, but only when the time is right. I personally don’t think we are ready for Tier 1 yet.
It’s good that you recognize that now and aren’t expecting to be competitive in Tier 1 right away. Don’t take this the wrong way but SoR isn’t quite there yet with regards to open field fighting to be a viable match for SoS and JQ. If I were ranking the skill levels as it stands now I’d have to give the edge to JQ. SoS zergs can be severely gashed by competant players but it’s like trying to empty the ocean with a bucket…you’re never gonna see the bottom. SoR is considerably lower on the scale right now and needs to do some work or face some rough times in Tier 1. I can’t stress enough that I’m not trying to start any drama, just making an observation after being in Tier 1 since release. If you go there now, with what you have, it’s going to get ugly.
The pic below is a perfect example. 20+ SoR vs 7 SBI players and the npcs. Not even very many upleveled SoR characters either and the Supervisor is already down. You just can’t allow yourselves to lose fights like these.
Not to mention that video only shows how stealth is broken in this game and thieves takes no skill to play.
The engineer is the only opponent that even had the slightest idea what was going on in that fight and even he only did the right thing a few times.
Bottom line, the thief would have died very quickly to any group who knew the counters and this video would have never been posted.
How many thieves does it take to kill a lord? Don’t know its never happened.
It takes a theif about 13 minutes to kill a keep lord. Tower lord, significantly less.
And it takes a 5 man squad of theifs seconds. We’ve been nuking every wall after flipping towers and keeps since this bug went mainstream, thankfully necros can detect thiefs easy by life transferring walls and checking to see if the % bar goes up (hitting something)
Hope this is hotfixed asap, would hate to see this continue in T1
I wasn’t referring to the current wall exploit, just responding to a comment regarding thieves killing keep/tower lords. To be honest I can’t believe that bug has been allowed to go on this long. Seems pretty simple to fix.
It’s a shame we have to go to such extremes to counter cheating when, by many accounts, the players on these servers are generally good people. I thought we’d see less of this type of behavior once we got out of Tier 1. I guess that was a pretty silly assumption on my part. Lets hope this isn’t allowed to continue for very much longer.

I’m also sure that there are people on SBI that are burned out from weeks of rough matches.
I’m sure this week’s match is already wearing a bit thin with some people, especially our commanders who are trying to put points on the board. However, we’re winning a lot of fights out there. We just don’t have the resources available to hold many objectives on the map. Doing well in open field fights is going to have to be enough for awhile, at least while we’re up against a server with such a large WvW presence.
And now a couple of pics from a fight earlier tonight to encourage our fellow SBI soldiers. Don’t give up, there’s still plenty of fun to be had…
Pic 1 – Wow that’s a lot of red names
Pic 2 – Hey don’t leave, the party’s just getting started!
Wow, a zerg with exactly zero gap closers. If only every other zerg in existence played like this.
SBI here.
First – the guilds that moved from SBI to SoR (Mord, Yaki, Syn, SSQ and the rest) were always great and dedicated people – nothing but respect and admiration for them.
I’m sure these guys are all good people. However, SBI as a server…all of us, participated in the losses that landed us in Tier 2. Now it’s time to suffer the consequences of those losses and start rebuilding but instead we’re hit with a mass exodus of our players. To add insult to injury, many of them have joined our current enemy. I agree with earendil in hoping these people find what they’re looking for but there’s nothing about this that I can respect or admire.
Sometimes you just have to take your medicine. That’s what those of us who are left on SBI are doing. The fact that we’re having to take extra doses because of our deserters is just something we’re going to have to choke down. I honestly never would have predicted the level of defection we’re experiencing but then again, when you’re winning everyone’s a team player. No worries though, we’ll still fight the good fight and hopefully get some stability in the near future.
From an SBI perspective, we had a lot of victories last night. We crushed several zergs with much smaller numbers and had a really good night of PvP. We had a pretty terrible night of WvW as we were constantly playing whack-a-mole with SoR groups popping their heads up as soon as we responded to attacks elsewhere on the map (Eternal Battlegrounds fyi).
There were plenty of badges (93!) and plenty of loot but not very many points to be had. We fought hard for our keep on several occasions last night (see pic below) and repelled the zergs right up until around 3am. I realize that most people would view a multi-golem attack vs a server with the outmanned buff as a dick move but it really was the only way they were ever going to take our keep. I know it feels like SBI is getting kicked while we’re down but let’s be honest, that’s really the best time to kick someone so we’re going to get kicked…A LOT.
We still have some of the best open field fighters in the game. We still crush larger forces regularly. We may not even be able to hold the ground we’re standing on but they’ll know they’re in a fight when they try to take it.
And now…action pics!
Pic 1: Send more SoR
Pic 2: Zergbusting on the walls of our EB keep or “The reason they used golems the next time”

Man, we’re losing people left and right. I live in the EST timezone and during my 6PM-10PM period SBI is outmanned in every single map…
Nah, we’re fine…
That is an awesome picture!
Having been up against SoR for a few weeks now, I can certainly sympathize LOL
I just want to know one thing though… what kind of computer do you have that can handle the culling? Usually when I see that many SoR at once, it’s after I’m dead and they are running past my still twitching corpse.
I built a new computer right before launch with the following hardware:
ASUS P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT LGA 1155 Motherboard
Intel Core i5-3450 Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz Processor
ASUS GeForce GTX 670 2GB Graphics Card
Corsair Force Series GT CSSD Hard Drive
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (x2) 16GB total RAM
It’s not top of the line by any means but it gets the job done. I think culling issues exist on just about any machine to some degree but having an updated system helps.
It’s good to be getting old :-)
It definitely beats the alternative
Just as an update as someone trying to transfer over, it is still full as of 3:30 PM EST
Is your entire guild transferring?
Edited for comical effect
Nice!

Nah, we’re fine…
I want Bunker of Faith and Speed of Sound…now plz
Good fights tonight/this afternoon. Seems like SBI is a bit outnumbered recently.
It’s getting rough out there
Rock/Paper/Scissors is, and always has been, a poor pvp model. If you can win a fight at the character select screen you’re playing a really bad pvp game.
Sometimes my computer just reboots for no reason…
No it doesn’t
Maybe not reboot, but others may have internet connectivity problems. I was often getting internet dropped every 10 minutes some nights as my computer would lose internet connectivity (which led to some unfortunate log outs during fights in wvw
). Thankfully my internet provider is now different and I have had no connection problems, so it won’t affect me. But I could see how it could affect some.
Connectivity problems are understandable sure. However, if your computer is “rebooting for no reason” then the reason is probably “you”.
Sometimes my computer just reboots for no reason…
No it doesn’t
“Someone comes running up to me.”
Don’t take this as me trying to sound condescending but that scenario is one you need to avoid as a thief. You should be sneaky even out of stealth because you want to initiate the fight, you never want to have to react to someone opening on you (it happens but you want to mitigate it as much as possible). The main advantage of the thief is the ability to pick your target and initiate combat on your terms.
Aside from that you need to learn the shortbow inside and out, it is an invaluable part of the dagger/dagger build in my humble opinion. It’s also very powerful in large scale combat (keep defense, fighting over a point/bridge, etc.). It provides you with a lot of defense and mobility…learn it, love it, never let it go
At your level you might just want to max the crit line and get Hidden Killer so your backstabs automatically crit. Use steal to close the distance, use cloak and dagger to set up your backstab and you’ll have a lot of fun even at level 59.
One of the main rules of pvp is DO NOT OVERPURSUE. It’s easy to overpursue as a thief, learn to keep your lust for blood in check. If the kill isn’t there switch to shortbow and soften the enemy ranks up a bit. You’ll also get yourself a lot more badges hitting groups of bad guys with AoE (clusterbomb) while you look for an opportunity to blow someone up with a backstab combo. As others have mentioned, Heartseeker is a finisher…read the description.
Of course as you level up the mechanics will become more nuanced but you’ll learn as you go. Also, head to the mists. Practice on the dummies, play some matches, and most of all…experiment, experiment, experiment.
