There’s an excellent thread in the Mesmer forums that shares some good tips and tricks for WvWing on a mesmer (with videos). I highly advise looking at this thread before completely scrapping the idea of playing a mesmer in WvW.

In pretty sure your matchups weren’t indefinitely long.
The match threads for the SF/FC/ET match-up were pretty positive at first when you guys were winning. But when FC started losing, things got really nasty really fast (and things got nasty well before SF’s population boom when the match was still relatively competitive). I get being frustrated, but an indefinitely long match with no end in sight is no excuse for painting the dominating server as bad people. Remember, we’re just as frustrated as you are. Blame the bad maths, not the people who are stuck here as a result.

(edited by Manoa.5897)
Does anyone recall SF complaining that much when we got our butts handed to us?
I remember some SFers vocalizing a bit of frustration when we were being spawn camped (as in completely spawn camped on ALL maps) and night capped. But it was usually more looking inward at ourselves and wishing we had those kind of numbers rather than blaming the dominating server. The match threads were still pretty darn friendly and fun and I don’t recall the servers being dominated being so bitter and trying so hard to paint a picture that the dominating server were a bunch of devils.
Henge of Denravi
Not really sure if you read what Manoa said but s/he has been one of your biggest supporters while I went on my little tirades. Nothing was said right there that was argumentative but that is the passive aggressive stuff that has been posted ever since we first started winning has kept me going.
Thanks Again and Happy V-Day

She.
Also, I’m not a supporter of any particular individual (or any particular server, except my own of course ). Just a fan of treating people fairly, keeping these server match threads clean, and saving the fighting for the battlefield. That’s all.
And FilthyRat is correct, the intent of my post was not to be argumentative. Just pointing out my observations from this side of the match, nothing more. If you’re trying to get me riled up to try to hook me into some forum PvP, nice try. Maybe another time.
Henge of Denravi
Which means, as we all suspected, that SF did get an influx of players, and this also shows that we took a hit to our population at the same time.
While we were denying a population boom back in early January (which was the case back then), nobody is denying that we got an influx of players anymore. We’re most certainly seeing far more folks in WvW now. We got some transfers just before server transfers ended. And we’re seeing more fair weather players coming back. And more PvEers dabbling in WvW. Which of these reasons is the primary reason for our population boom (if any one is actually the main cause), however, has been the source of much debate.
Henge of Denravi
O.o Wait…SF and FC…dancing…TOGETHER?? What next? Human sacrifice? Dogs and cats living together? Mass hysteria?
Henge of Denravi
Agreed Sniffy. Some are getting bored. Some are getting frustrated. Some are just plain tired. Here’s hoping we’ll all have something fresh and new sooner rather than later.
Henge of Denravi
Three, I don’t event know why you actually took the time to post this here. You were very upset about my dance, and I found it hilarious that you were so mad. Not to mention posting it here.
SF now trains their noobs to dace? Wow. Ok that was a real big -1 on the respect-o-meter.
No, we don’t. But there are some vets on our server have been corpse dancing as of late. And there are some on other servers who are corpse dancing as well. Unfortunately, some new players pick up the habits of those who they are playing with and playing against.

Anyway, Sorrows Furnace has an ego too big for their shoes and is losing all my respect towards them
rapidly, with all their boasting…….oh and don’t forget all the trash talk i have seen from SF on these forums this week, its disgraceful and shows no sportsmanship whatsoever.SF – Worst. BM. Server. Ever.

C’mon guys. Due to the messed-up ratings math for Tier 8, it appears we’re going to be stuck with each other for quite a bit longer. When I first started doing WvW I thought this was normal, expected behavior. I had ET and FC do this kind of thing regularly. Laughing, dancing on the corpse, etc. so of course, I started to do this same thing right back. Once I fell in with people more experienced they showed me the benefits of refraining from the pointless boasting and peen waving.
Still, I see this happen all the time and it is not exclusive to SF players, not by a long shot.
You want SF peeps not to do this sort of thing? Stop doing it your self.it becomes a vicious cycle. i’m new. i go out and play around in WvW. i would have never thought to laugh or dance on someone’s corpse unless they did something stupid, like fall to their death right in front of me. if i did that, i would expect to get laughed at too. however…someone on another team curbstomps me, and then laughs, or points, or jumps on my body, or something else dumb like that. now i want to “return the favor”… regardless if the next guy i kill is actually the one who was rude to me in the first place.
you want that little cycle to end? don’t do it yourself. don’t perpetuate the cycle. i’ve never danced on someone’s corpse, even when i killed someone who really deserved it.
Tip…those who are corpse jumping/dancing are doing it to get a rise out of you. Coming onto the forums to complain about this kind of behavior is exactly whey want you to do.
If anyone finds this kind of behavior unsavory, help break the cycle. If someone does it to you, just move on. Don’t give them the thrill of complaining about it on the forums. Don’t it yourself. Maybe even do something positive to show your appreciation for the badges your enemy just gave you (like a /salute or a /kneel).
Henge of Denravi
we completely destroyed them, doubling each of their points in score. […] we are still losing rating.
Something is broken with the scoring here… has to be.
I don’t see a way out of tier 8 unless they correct the rating system. Doubling the score of your enemy should NOT show an overall loss in rating points.
Could somebody from ANet explain the math behind this a bit, and possibly defend it? I’d like to know what has to happen for us to GAIN points, as doubling the enemy score is not enough.
One of Takerukun’s posts in the other thread explains what is going on (emphasis mine)…
The way that the ratings work is that the system looks at the three servers’ current ratings and predicts the point outcome based off of those. The ratings are – sadly – modified based on how well a server does against its predicted outcome.
The math behind this is perfectly valid in theory. However the theory also assumes that the rating you have is more or less static, and that you will be facing enough opponents that a non-static score will be quickly dealt with.
This is what creates the soul-crushing pit that is T8. Due to the relatively small opponent pool we’ve faced, and the very static nature of their ratings (SF aside. Kain and DR were enough), the math involved has pushed the rating of FC to below where it should be. This, in turn, pulled ET down with us. And together, we shackle anyone unfortunate enough to face us.
That’s the problem with the current lack of a lower floor in T8 ratings. We’re far enough below the true T8 ratings (while still being T8 ratings), that SF can’t beat us by as much as the T7 ratings require it to. They lose ratings because the system not only expects them to curbstomp us, it expects them to curbstomp a fourth – and maybe a fifth as well – opponent in order to be on T7’s level.
That’s how beaten and bloody ET’s and FC’s ratings have become. Even if we did absolutely nothing, gaining fewer than 1000 end of week score between the two of us, SF still would not have beaten us by enough for the system to have trial run with SF in T7.
What makes this worse, is that every week SF stays in T8 and slaughters us, our ratings are going down further. This, simply put, only makes matters worse the longer they stay. SF will have roughly a two month stay. Assuming things continue to be a blowout even with SF gone as most non-T8 posters have predicted, the next unfortunate victim of T8 will be held hostage even longer.
Henge of Denravi
Go to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Anet-doesn-t-care-about-t8 and look for the posts by Takerukun.8924. He provides a good explanation on what’s going on with the ranking system, why it breaks down in Tier 8 (and Tier 1), and why SF is still loosing rating despite our winning by a blowout.

Hi…my name is Manoa and I’m a female WvWer.
I’ll admit that I was never much of a PvPer until GW2. But when I heard how PvP and WwV would work during the GW2’s development, I just knew I’d have to give it a try. When I finally stepped foot into WvW back in October/November to work on my map completions, I absolutely loved it. Since then, I find I’m spending most of my time in WvW unless I’m focusing on leveling alts, running guild events (who is predominately PvE) or farming for my legendary. I find myself on my staff ele the most and am usually a ground pounder that focuses on those jobs that require high-damage AoE as well as kamakaze runs to take out enemy siege. But I’ll switch out on the fly to to support, healing, siege building, repairing walls/doors, etc., etc. Whatever the situation calls for, I try to assist to the best of my ability.
Henge of Denravi
The one thing I’d like to ask ferg players, or really sorrows or any other lower tier servers, do you guys get overflows for maps often in PvE?
We see overflow maps for Lion’s Arch quite frequently, particularly during peak hours. Rarely see overflow maps for the rest of the PvE maps unless there’s a world event going on. But our PvE maps do tend to be relatively well populated (they most certainly aren’t ghost towns like I hear with other servers).

Your problem of getting steam rolled by SF is not just a T8 problem.
True. But the fact that servers are getting steamrolled isn’t the issue. It’s the DURATION of said seamrolling that’s an issue. No server should have to steamroll their opposition for over a month just to move up to the next tier. And no server should have to endure steamrolling for over a month for the hope that they get to face an opponent that may be a better fit. (If HoD’s population and coverage is anything like what it was when we faced them last month, I wholeheartedly feel that they would be a far better fit for ET and FC than SF).
Henge of Denravi
(edited by Manoa.5897)
And, as a matter of fact, we lost some latino guilds together with some other guilds, hence why we are T8 right now. And no, we haven’t got any kind of massive guild transfer.
That’s a shame to hear some of the Latino guilds were among those that we lost to other servers. But it’s a relief though to see [LH] is still going strong on SF. It’s always awesome to see your guild members around the server. Great folk and great players.

Takerukun, thank you for the excellent explanation (with numbers!) as to why everyone in Tier 8 is up in arms about how the ratings work. +1’d! It’s my hope someone with ArenaNet takes notice of your post and comes up with some viable solutions for our tier.
Henge of Denravi
Sorrows Furnace has been the unofficial south american/latin server since launch.
Truth. Sorrow’s Furnace did not recently experience Latin American mass transfers. As Lucky points out, we’ve been the unofficial Latin American server since launch and those Latino guilds (like La Hermandad) you’re noticing have always been here.
Henge of Denravi
Fair weather players who jump ship to winning servers at the slightest whiff of loosing just so they could be a “winner” are what caused the problem in the first place. Why not stay on your current server, get involved and help build up your server’s WvW? Be part of the solution, not the problem.
Henge of Denravi
Hod is currently a stronger server than SF.
Not necessarily. Throughout December, SF was losing WvWers to other servers and PvE. During the two matches just before we dropped into Tier 8, SF and HoD were relatively even in terms of population/score with GoM was completely dominating both servers. It really could have been either us or HoD that could have dropped into the tier. HoD just so happened to edge us out during the week it mattered the most and we ended up being the server that dropped to Tier 8. It was really luck of the draw.
If HoD’s WvW population is what it was back in December, then SF would actually be the stronger server currently given our population gain and increased coverage. It’s just the scores don’t reflect this because we fell into the Tier 8 pit and have a LOT of points to make up before we can actually break out of Tier 8.
Henge of Denravi
There is a vocal minority of SF who think that the match up is fair right now and they are winning due to some kind of miraculous ability to follow a blue dot en masse. Mostly pvers coming out of the woodwork, but I had mistaken you for one of them!
to make amends I say we have a tonic race through EB!
Pish…zerging everything isn’t “strategy.” :p We have some solid folks who are trying to break our people of that habit, but we have a ways to go yet. As we get more leaders/commanders and experienced regulars, it’ll get better (I’d say it already is starting to get better, but again, we still have a long way to go).
And I’m a PvEer too. But I do a LOT of WvW too. I’m by no means WvW expert and still have a lot to learn. But I’ve been in WvW long enough to know the ropes and our server’s trends.
Henge of Denravi
(edited by Manoa.5897)
beating a pair of servers due to numbers advantage for over a month with over double our score and not moving up so you continue that match repeatedly …isn’t broken?
To be fair, SF hasn’t been been winning for over a month. In fact, we haven’t even been winning a month yet (we posted our first win in this tier on January 19th). And our winning by a super large margin is a relatively recent occurrence.
But I wholeheartedly agree with you that there is something broken about the scoring. At this pace, SF is going to be stuck in Tier 8 completely dominating for quite a bit longer and it may actually total a month or (more!) of curbstomping for us to finally dig ourselves out of the point ditch. And that really shouldn’t be the case. It’s bad WvW for all parties involved.
Henge of Denravi
@manoa, If I misinterpreted your statement then forgive me. We have a few chest thumpers out there that really get annoying in the puzzle and on our thread.
No worries! It’s totally difficult to interpret tone in a text-only communication environment and it’s bound to happen from time to time.
And I’m totally with ya on the chest thumping. I’m totally against chest thumping when it’s unwarranted and was quite vocal on these boards against such activity a couple months back when we railroaded HoD and ET.
We need to look at this tier situation. The math is most certainly not “fine as is.”
100% agreed. A server shouldn’t have to completely dominate their opposition for months (emphasis on the plural) before they dig their score out of the ditch and move to a better suited tier. Mismatched fights like these are no fun for all parties involved (those who dominate and those who are being dominated). And it’s disheartening to hear that servers who are already struggling with WvW population are loosing even more people due to such mismatches (which even further exacerbates the population discrepancies).

I bet you are one of the people that just camps the EB jp when fc or et actually has a keep
You can look at my post history to know that this is simply not the case. I’m not a fan of JP campers or camping and never attack in the EB JP unless attacked first. You know, you can disagree with my position on the source of SF’s population boom without resorting to accusations that are just not true.
Also, never seen your guild tag before and I’m in wvw all the time.
Because my guild is a small guild of friends from another MMO that is predominately PvE focused and I’m pretty much the only member of my guild who WvWs with any semblance of regularity. Keep an eye out for me in EB during Pacific Coast evenings. That’s where I spend most of my game time when I’m not leveling up alts. I’ll be like a game of “Where’s Waldo.” Nice try trying to discredit my position by implying that I’m not really a WvWer because you don’t see my guild tag in WvW. Super cute.
Also, I’m not arguing that we don’t have the numerical advantage in Tier 8. We do. And I’m not arguing that we didn’t receive transfers. We did (just not as early as the other servers in the match were claiming we got them). But there is disagreement (even among those on our own server) on just how much of our population boom is attributable to free server transfers and how much is attributable to those returning from PvE. I was sharing my take on the situation (which so happens to concur with Lucky’s take on the situation), nothing more.
Henge of Denravi
(edited by Manoa.5897)
Continuing to say that the servers aren’t balanced because of a massive influx of transfers isn’t true.
Don’t bother wasting your time. The SECOND FC started loosing, they immediately started claiming that we were only winning because we were the beneficiaries of some mythical massive transfer influx. This well before the curbstomping when the scores were still relatively close to each other and the map control was roughly 1/3 across all servers. They’re going to believe what they want to believe, no matter what you say.
Now, to be fair, we HAVE seen a population boom. And I DO think we did receive some transfers just before free server transfers ended. But FC was claiming we were getting server transfers well before we actually got them. I still I personally think our population boom is far more attributable to folks returning to WvW from PvE. I myself am not seeing a whole lot of new names/guilds, but am seeing a LOT of the same names/guilds that I see in PvE playing in WvW. I suspect the same old trend…when our server does bad in WvW, everyone escapes to PvE. When our server does well in WvW, everyone hops on the WvW bandwagon.

Monthly I’m struggling with as I’m not sure how to approach dungeons and I hate asking people for help.
http://gw2lfg.com/ is your new best friend! Just post a new lfg and be sure to mention you’re new to dungeons and may need some extra guidance through. If you haven’t played any dungeons yet, my suggestion is to start out with some story modes first to get used to how dungeons work. Then once you feel comfortable with the difficulty level of the story modes, then start on the explorables. I suggest getting to a point where you’re running Arah Explorable on a regular basis since you have your eyes set on The Bifrost. You’ll need the Shards of Zhaitan reward from that particular dungeon to buy the Gift of Zhaitan needed for your Gift of Color.

$18-$20 to PAY to move to a dead server? lol why
Considering the massive two hour battle at ET’s garrison last night, ET is anything but dead. As someone whose server has been matched against ET for the last month, I can say that while ET may not have a high WvW population at the moment, there is still a PLENTY of fight and spirit left on that server.

wtf 1m karma? What the heck is that? It took me ages to 200k.
The karma component is typically the easiest part of the legendary creation process. Are you completing your daily and/or monthly achievements? Those particular achievements reward jugs of liquid karma that give you 4,500 karma each (which can be boosted with karma boosters for even more karma). Each daily gets you one jug and each monthly gets you ten jugs.
If you run frequent dynamic events as well as regularly complete your daily and/or monthly achievements, you should have no problem getting the karma items needed for the legendary.
P.S. Keep in mind that legendary weapons are meant to be a long term character goal. There are many who have been in this game since launch who still don’t have them (myself included).

The colors rotate if your map changed position in the rank. My server may change to blue, but what I need is red, and that is never going to happen. And you can think is whining, but WvW completion isnt supposed to be the main problem of the 100%, just an additional place…
This.
At higher tiers you can be stuck with the same map colour for weeks, if not months.
And plowing down another map just isn’t an option. True, if you stick on map for more than an hour or so, you can pick up a lot of vistas/pois/sps …. But it won’t get them all for you … Particularly offensive home keeps.
Such stagnation rings true in low tiers as well. My server has been stuck on green ever since we landed in Tier 8 on January 5th. In our tier, Sorrow’s has by far the best chance at players getting 100% map completion. But spending a bunch of time in WvW still won’t get you everything.
But the situation is even worse for our opponents. Ferguson’s Crossing has been stuck on blue and Eredon Terrace has been stuck on red since early December. Their WvW populations are so low that their chances of getting map completion on their opponents’ borderlands or in EB are currently slim-to-none. And that just isn’t right.
Henge of Denravi

at least 90% of SF players attack in puzzles
at least 75% of ET players dont…in my experience
Sad to hear. We used to be far more forgiving in the JP. I don’t care what others on my server are doing, I still won’t attack unless attacked first.

If you had experienced the account bound dye system (as those of us did during BWE1), you wouldn’t be asking for account bound dyes.
The old account bound dye system worked as follows:
-You had to wait until you got a Colorful Dye Seed drop to start the dye creation process
-Once you had a Colorful Dye Seed, you had to take it to a Dye Manufacturer in your home instance. Said Dye Manufacturer would only accept one Colorful Dye Seed at at time.
-In return for your Colorful Dye Seed, you would receive a Dye Receipt in your inventory. After a mandatory 24 hour waiting period, you could return to the Dye Manufacturer and exchange the Dye Receipt for a soulbound unidentified dye (I can’t even imagine trying to go for The Bifrost under such a system).
-The only way to bypass the 24 hour waiting period (and get your dye instantly) was to buy Magic Plant Food from the gem store.
The old system was incredibly clunky and took a very, VERY long time to accumulate dyes. The new system is far more intuitive and offers far more flexibility to players.
And to those who think ArenaNet of removing the account-bound system to push people to the gem store…just think about how the old system works versus the current system. Bypassing a mandatory 24 hour waiting period is a powerful marketing tool. ArenaNet likely would have generated FAR more gem store revenue under the old account bound dye system via Magic Plant Food sales.
