This went through my mind today

First they came for the dungeons, but I didn’t say anything because I don’t play dungeons

Then they came for world v world and still I said nothing because I didn’t play world v world

Then they came for player v player and still I said nothing because I didn’t play player v player

and then they came for legendaries and I said nothing because I don’t want a legendary

And when they came for my content, there was no one left to stand up for me.

As much as I disagree with the development direction GW2’s taken in the recent past, I’d hardly compare it to the Holocaust.

I wasn’t comparing it to the holocaust.

IMHO, I think one of the worst decisions ANet made was moving from a Living Story development cycle to a Living Story/Expansion development cycle. Ever since ANet made the move to move away from a development cycle that was working (regular Living Story updates) and moved their resources into developing expansions, we’ve had massive content droughts and less developer communication (it’s only been fairly recently that we’ve had more dev communication and transparency). HoT underwhelmed with a short storyline and underdelivered the features that were promised.

It is poor form that nearly a half-year later, there are expansion features that were promised in pre-launch advertising that we are STILL waiting on. And it is unacceptable that one of heavily advertised features that players were incredibly excited about (and PAID for) is now being put on the backburner indefinitely. This does not make me particularly confident about the other features that were promised, but have not yet been delivered.

It’s pretty obvious that ANet bit off more than it could chew by taking on expansions and their dev resources are spread WAY too thin. At this point, I wish they’d scrap the idea of a second expansion, allocate those resources to finishing what people paid for, then return to a development cycle that worked (regular Living Story updates and no expansions).

The problem is, the 2 week cycle wasn’t that great either. The story basically got done in a day (if it wasn’t bugged), and any other activities around it were done in maybe a second day (unless it needed repeating, due to time gates or farming).

Either way, in the end, it didn’t last the whole two weeks for anyone (unless they were on vacation for two whole weeks and could never just log in to get the free week. There was that incident I think with some weather problems and people were trying to help in some way).

People got bored of the two week schedule fast. And even then there were lulls in between chapters where…welp, really nothing much to do since you probably did all you could during the two weeks you had. Remember, not all of dry top and silverwastes was available right off the bat, but released over time as well.

Two weeks was too ambitious. From what I’m use to, it was at first new content every 3 months. If Anet wanted to show themselves as being more bold, a month would’ve been a better idea, maybe two, then see if you can work your way to even shorter times.

Two weeks was just waaay too big of a leap

Totally agreed that 2 weeks was too short/ambitious. I much more preferred the release pace (+/- one release per month) that they had right after the vanilla game was launched. Heck, the current quarterly pace would feel fine too if they actually incorporated some story into the releases. But the current story pace is way too glacial. And with 2nd gen legendaries being indefinitely suspended, they’re making some pretty heavy sacrifices in order to keep pushing on with the LS/Expac cycle.

EDIT – Also, with 2nd gen legendaries being indefinitely postponed, it’s obvious they’re having to make some pretty heavy sacrifices to keep pushing forward with this LS/Expac development schedule.

Love – The new Shatter fight. It’s a much more interesting fight with fun mechanics, but not overtuned for the zone’s level.

Love – Gliding in Core Tyria. Makes map exploration fun again.

Love – Show All Usable Objects. Makes finding usable objects (like gathering nodes, noxious pods, etc) MUCH easier to spot without having to constantly press on a key.

Hate – Chrono “balance.” Yes, chrono needed to be tuned down and I expected it to be adjusted, but you guys swung the pendulum WAY too far in the opposite direction. It wasn’t a nerf. You guys gutted the specialization, then nuked it via orbital bombardment. Have the balance team thoroughly read the mesmer forums on why it was too much and ideas for possible solutions. Lots of good ideas floating in the mes forums.

Meh – Lunar New Year. Nice idea, lazy implementation. Same exact format as last year. The festival is pretty much entirely centered around Dragon Ball. While Dragon Ball is fun, it’s really the only thing to do for Lunar New Year and gets boring fast. It would be nice to have a bit more activity variety added to make it a true festival.

Meh – Brew of the Month Club. Blatant gold sink. Making it drawn out over 12 months begs the question “why?” Backpack is fugly.

New daily log-in reward on character swap

It’s way worse then this. Even home instance is reset. Not gonna farm it, (clearly exploit). At first I thought it’s graphical bug (all the nodes still alive, but not farmable), tested on one and it is. This should be hotfixed.

I checked the home instance and can confirm the nodes are resetting. It seems the daily reset for account daily activities is resetting for each individual character.

Rune of the Warrior (weapons swap) is useless to Engineers and Elementalists (and Revenants!).

Heads up…Engi kit swapping and Ele switching attunements count as weapon swapping for the purposes of triggering weapon swap effects with runes/sigils. I suspect Revenants will follow likely a similar trend with their legend swapping.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

However, prices can be a good indication of whether an oversupply or undersupply exists, since price is a reflection of the relationship between supply and demand. When you have 4 ascended mats and the price of 1 of those mats is a clear outlyer that is well above the prices of the other 3 mats, there are pretty good odds that an undersupply exists.

The cause of the undersupply may be on the supply side of the equation (no reliable way to obtain the stuff used to create the ascended mat), or on the demand side (ANet requiring more stuff to create the ascended mat compared to the other ascended mats). Or…it can be both (which I think is the case).

I think its more the price evolution which is a good indicator of oversupply and undersupply, not the price compared to different items. I find it hard to believe that silk or damask is undersupplied when supply on the tp has been growing continously for 5 months and prices dropped.

the relation ship of supply demand, and price is not always a simple one.
Some times you would make more, by charging less, but you can only do that if the supply can match that.

lets say your price point on a apples is 5 dollars, it sells consistently but slowly, and you slowly build up an excess of apples. you sell 1000 apples a month and build up a surplus of 100 apples a month
you say man i am making too many apples i keep wasting apples
now you could look at that and say, cutting the price to 4 dollars, yeah i might sell more apples, but i would only make 4400 dollars

but it turns out that when you dropped the price to 4 dollars, a bunch more people become interested in apples, an apple pop tart factory can now afford to makea decent profit buying your apples, they now want 1000 more apples if the price is 4 dollars.

but you cant make 1000 more apples, so you are actually undersupplied, and your 5 dollar price actually makes you less money than you could make, if you could only produce 1000 more apples per month.

Now, is this the case with silk? who knows, but we cant find out, because we cant adjust the supply.

I will say ascended is failing at its goal of being something people enjoy doing as an endgame activity, many people are opting out, and dont feel rewarded doing it. I just stopped one day after being like 4/6 or maybe 5/6 armor peices for leather because the daily craft made me want to choke a *!@). I dont even entertain the notion that i would bother on my mesmer.

the point of that is, i think the current costs, in time/money are not such that they are at the right price point. Especially when you realize, that the real point of ascended isnt even to make gold, its to be something that people want to do once they reach endgame.

back to the apple analogy for a second, anets goal with ascended can be likened to the goal of getting people hooked on apples. The current supply of silk is not one that gets people hooked on apples

This is probably one of the best explanations of the concept of “pent-up demand” that I’ve ever seen.

Also, I crave apples.

Bernie: while I agree with much of what you said, the supply not meeting the demand isn’t exactly correct. As of now, according to gw2spidy, silk is sitting at 722,130 supply and demand at 614,942. Thats a supply of +107,189. The supply is enough to meet the demand.

Sell orders ? total supply
Buy orders ? total demand

Neither of those statements are really true. Sell orders, sure those are the ones posted on the TP available for purchase. But how many of that 700K are within say 50% of the current selling price? There’s 21K at 4s and I don’t think silk every got that high. There’s one for sale for 250g and at least 100 for over 1g a piece for crying out loud. Sure it’s all part of “supply” on the TP but is it truly indicative of supply that will trade in a timely fashion? When over the last month the price fell between 1s60c and 2s25c?

Same is true with buy orders. 625K buy orders, 95k are 10c or below. 250K below 1s which it hasn’t been since the first few weeks after ascended armor was introduced.
So does that truly count as demand or like the 1g silk scrap on sale just wishful thinking?

You do realize that your entire argument just further supports my statement that buy orders do not equal total demand and sell orders do not equal total supply, right? XD

(P.S. I had to edit my post…didn’t realize the forum doesn’t support the slashed equal sign and the forum replaced it with a ?. You caught me in the middle of the edit.)

Sell orders =/= total supply
Buy orders =/= total demand

Sell orders represent a portion of overall supply, and buy orders represent a portion of overall demand. They do not take into account other components of supply and demand (like buying instantly, selling instantly, sitting on mats, etc) and do not give a complete picture.

Also, your equation to calculate a silk “oversupply” is flawed. Buy orders and sell orders means there is no meeting of the minds between the people placing buy orders and the people placing sell orders. You can’t subtract one from the other to calculate over/undersupply. You need to take into account all the other sources of supply and demand to really calculate whether the market is in balance or if an over/undersupply exists.

Because it makes SENSE that you chop down Trees and mine Ore? I know that sounds silly in a fantasy game setting, but if you think about it, NODES of Cloth and Leather existing in the game world is kind of “immersion breaking” (and I HATE that term).

Not really. Nodes for cloth actually DO make sense. Many the fabrics of the game are derived from natural plant materials. And those that aren’t derived from plant materials can be presented in non-immersion-breaking ways. For example…

Jute Solution: Jute plant node gives players “raw jute,” which is then refined into bolts of jute.

Wool Solution: Sheep (or some other wool-producing critter) node gives players “raw wool,” which is then refined into bolts of wool.

Cotton Solution: Cotton plant node gives players “raw cotton,” which is then refined into bolts of cotton.

Linen Solution: Flax plant node gives players “raw flax,” which is then refined into bolts of linen.

Silk Solution: Silkworm node gives players “raw silk,” which is then refined into bolts of silk.

Gossamer Solution: Tricky because gossamer is a weave when talking textiles. Could use silk bolts to refine into gossamer (which could have been a solution for the silk oversupply before ascended crafting). Or ANet could say that the gossamer textiles in Tyria are derived from spider silk (which is also known as gossamer) and have spider nodes that produce “raw gossamer,” which is then refined into bolts of gossamer.

ANet’s mistake was making the unrefined versions of cloth “scraps of X.” Instead, they should have had nodes throughout the world that would produce the raw components that would be processed into rather than cloth scrap drops.

Something similar could have been done for leather too (critter nodes throughout that players could farm to get “untanned hides” to process into leather squares).

I also find the new LFG change completely unusable. I have missed out on so many taxis because it blinks ridiculously fast whenever a high-demand taxi party is posted to the Open World section and a ton of people join parties at the same time. Not to mention I’ve have joined parties I didn’t intend to join because the positioning constantly changes. I’ve also encountered the issue of trying to spam join to get into a taxi, only to find that I didn’t join any party, but have been suppressed from the lfg because I “joined too many parties.”

Oh, don’t worry. Tonn’s arc has been removed. It’s totally not confusing at all to speak about consoling Tonn’s widow (neither of whom you’ve met yet) since now you’ll never meet the guy at all or his widow. Because logic.

And my other characters will never experience the joy of meeting Tonn, the heartbreak of seeing Apatia suffer, or the redemption of clearing their besmirched name. We get it, a lot of people like SAB, but it’s not a game breaking problem if it never returns.

It may not be gamebreaking if SAB doesn’t return, but it would be a bait-and-switch. There are players who bought the Infinite Continue Coin last year with the understanding that they would be able to use it in future SAB releases. It’s been a year since people who purchased this item via the gem store have been able to use their purchase (with no hope on the horizon that we’ll be seeing SAB anytime soon).

I kind of miss CoH’s hybrid mix of Free to Play and Subscription. But, I don’t think ANet can put out enough new things in GW2 to manage that model.

Please gawd no. That model was a mess and CoH went downhill quickly after its implementation. There was so much crap in CoH’s store it was ridiculous. And for returning veterans who were unable to pay for a sub, that model and and its revamp was awful if you weren’t considered long-term enough of a veteran. It is no fun coming back to a game and finding all the gear you worked so hard for was totally invalidated because you didn’t dedicate 5 years of payment to the game.

I prefer GW2’s B2P than that money-grab “hybrid” travesty any day.

It’s a feature update, not a content update…

But the problem is, most of the announcements for this feature pack are not related to new features. They’re either imports from the Chinese client targeted toward new players, back-end performance improvements, or polish to existing features. The number of actual features in this upcoming September Feature Pack are very few.

The whole point of these feature packs were to break out new features from the content so they could get the excitement they deserve. It’s understandable that given the announcements so far, players (particularly long-term players) would be disappointed. Especially after the amazing for-reals features we received in the April feature pack.

Did YOU ever find it hard?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manoa.5897

Manoa.5897

I never really found these things too hard.

The only annoying problem i have with different sets of skills are that they are not shown anywhere in the game, until they become available.

You can’t see or read the underwater skills unless you are underwater AND you have them unlocked, same with downed (and i don’t think you can even read what normal weapon skills do until you unlock them).

Same with Necromancers Death Shroud and Lich Form, they give you specific sets of skills that are shown nowhere, and being timed skills, it really hurts to be spending majority of your Lich Form reading what your skills do.

And aside the Downed State starting from lv5, you still need to spend time downed reading your skills (unless ive missed something).

It really can’t be too hard for there to be a tab that shows every skill your character has available, so you know, you can be prepared for when you get to use them.

I think this right here is the really the underlying problem with downed form (or any other skill that changes your skillbar). The biggest problem is that the skill descriptions are not shown in-game until the skillbar changes. Some skills (like Lich form or ele conjured weapons) can be used out of combat where you can take the time to read what they do. But in the heat of battle, it’s pretty difficult to take a few moments to read and digest what downed skills actually do. Which results in to a new player spamming all their powers without a clear understanding what they do. Some may seek out the information out of game afterwards, but many won’t.

Pushing downed state back to Level 5 isn’t going to fix this problem. The best solution is to add some additional polish to the Hero Panel and incorporate this information into the Skills and Traits section. If the downed skills (and other skills that the character has at their disposal that changes their skillbar) are added to the Skills and Traits section of the Hero Panel, then the player is able to read and digest the information on their own time (not the heat of battle) without having to seek out the information out-of-game (i.e. the wiki).

To answer OP’s question…I personally never found stuff like downed state or the trait system overwhelming or extremely difficult to understand as a new player. At least not to the point that I’d ragequit or demand a complete overhaul of the systems. The only difficulty I experienced when I was a new player was finding good sources of information in-game that thoroughly explained these systems. So I just relied on the wiki.

Game Updates: Traits

*No Personal story, Dungeon or Map Completes for unlocks..

And for heaven’s sake, no WvW for trait unlocks. I’m an avid PvXer and love WvW, but forcing new players into the WvW maps to complete tasks that do nothing to help your server’s team just creates even MORE tension between new players and veteran WvWers. Merc camps? Overgrown Grub? Anet pls. :-/ If you HAVE to link trait unlocks to WvW tasks to get new blood into WvW, link higher level traits (i.e. grandmaster traits, none of this low-level unlocks) to tasks that actually matter in WvW.

Also, requiring Obsidian Sanctum for an adept trait? While it’s one of my favorite JP in the game, I wholeheartedly feel that forcing new low-level players into a PvP map to complete one of the most difficult JPs in the game is absolutely and utterly cruel.

Arenanet meet and greet at PAX PRIME 2014

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Manoa.5897

I was there. There was no formal Q&A and no news released (to be expected in a M&G format, which is totally different from last year’s Anniversary Bash format).

There wasn’t much other than meeting and greeting with fellow players. There were only a handful of devs there to chat with, most of whom were tied up with the event (and the few who were not tied up with the event were always tied up with other players). If you got there early enough, you also got food, beer and maybe a t-shirt (if they had your size, see below). They also had a raffle with some nice prizes (gratz to the raffle winners). There was also a cute birthday cake that looked like the Birthday Blaster cakes in-game.

I’m not typically one to complain about free stuff, but I have to admit that the swag was a bit disappointing compared to past Seattle events. They didn’t give out cards for in-game items like past years. They did give out Scarlet t-shirts, but didn’t have a decent size selection. No joke…my sig other and I got there 2.5 hours early and near the front of the line (someone had counted the line and we were somewhere in the mid-30s). By the time we got to the t-shirt table, they were out of men’s small, medium, large, and XL. They were down to the last men’s 2XL and a handful of men’s 3XL. But they had a bunch of women’s sizes that were all several sizes too small (their women’s 2XL was more like a medium in American sizes). The sizing was so bad that they had one ANet employee walking the line with an example and warning people that the sizes ran small. Since the women’s sizes were much too small, I had to settle for a much too large men’s 3XL.

The whole thing felt incredibly rushed compared to past events, which is not surprising given the last-minute announcement for the event. Still, it was fun to meet and greet with fellow players.

Since the women’s sizes were too small, I had to settle for a much too large men’s 3XL.

The whole thing felt incredibly rushed compared to past events, which is not surprising given the last-minute announcement for the event. Still, it was fun to meet and greet with fellow players.

Out of curiosity, does (Commander) Squad Chat have spam suppression?

It does not. However, squads can only have a max of 50 players, which isn’t conducive if the commander needs to frequently communicate with an entire map of players (which is what the OP needs to do in order to command Teq).

Gotcha, thanks.

I wonder if Anet shouldn’t just revise that 50-to-a-squad cap then…

They’ve increased squad capacity once already. It used to max out at 30 players. Maybe they’ll consider increasing the cap again.

Though it does beg the question…if everyone (or the vast majority of players) on the map is there for a mega world event that requires a high level of coordination, why should we force everyone to join a squad when ANet could just lighten up the message suppression for /map and /say instead? (it’s easier and more efficient for commanders to use /map or /say in those instances instead of herding a whole map of cats to join their squad)

Triple Trouble... World Event

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manoa.5897

Manoa.5897

I’m not about to server hop to find a group to do this event. when I want to do it on my Home Server. The fact still remains… On at least some servers. The event is unbalanced do to the interest in the players.. Or just lack of interest do to bad experiances. The Community on Northern Shiverpeaks. at several peak times. Just doesn’t run the event in any sort of numbers that make it possible. even when they work together.

Home Server means very little on the PvE-side of things now. All PvE maps are using megaserver technology and include a mix of players various servers. The maps you’re on aren’t NSP maps…they’re actually cross server maps. And it sounds like you’re getting shuffled into instances of the map where people are either unorganized or uninterested.

You should use the LFG tool to find a map instance that is doing an organized run (players advertise organized runs in the LFG all the time, just look for someone offering to “taxi”). Or take the advice of the other folks and join a cross-server guild like TTS who does this kind of stuff and taxi folks into their organized maps.

And don’t fret…you don’t need to spend gems to transfer servers. If you’re able to party up with someone in an organized map who are taxiing folks in, it’s just a simple right-click on their name and “join” to get into their map instance.

I was planning on getting the Mistforged Staff for my staff ele. But sadly, I’m among the bugged and never got my chest (never transferred, completed every single WvW Season 2 achievement). Considering they have yet to reimburse the bugged people who never got their Season 1 chests, I’m not exactly confident that I’ll actually get my staff.

Now that the season is over, there’s no Gold/Silver/Bronze right now. It’s all based on rank. And SF is considered within a “reasonable variance” of CD and NSP.

GoM/DR/FC
GoM = Rank 15
DR = Rank 17
FC = Rank 19
Variance between top and bottom server = 4 ranks

CD/NSP/SF
CD = Rank 14
NSP = Rank 12
SF = Rank 16
Variance between top and bottom server = 4 ranks

how to farm gauntlet chances as mesmer video

in Festival of the Four Winds

Manoa.5897

The quaggan is super quick to farm with 5 gambits and VERY little effort. No need to swap weapons or time interrupts.

-Take everything but Crowd Favorite.
-6/6/0/0/2 mostly zerk (I had Knight armor and zerk everything else and could do this easily)
-Camp GS the whole time.
-Immediately cast GS4, Signet of the Ether, then GS4 again for 2 phantasms right out of the gate.
-Kite around and try your best to maintain maximum distance.
-When quag gets too close for comfort, push away with GS5.
-For rest of time, just auto attack until GS4 is recharged. When GS4 recharges, fire it off for 3rd phantasm.
-If quag breaks out of crippled and/or gets too close for comfort again, Blink away. If he gets too close for comfort again, then use Decoy or GS5 (if off cooldown).
-Autoattack to victory.

Question for ANet: GW2 Anniversary Bash 2014?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manoa.5897

Manoa.5897

I hope there’s another anniversary bash this year. Last year’s was insanely fun.

DragonWhimsy, the safest bet is to buy the PAX pass, just in case. If there is an anniversary bash, you can ALWAYS easily find someone who is willing to buy the pass. But if there is no anniversary bash, you risk missing out on a day of PAX by not getting a pass for that day.

Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manoa.5897

Manoa.5897

Throwing my feedback into the “totally not pleased with the town clothes changes” hat.

I like most of the wardrobe changes, but I too am pretty upset with the “all or nothing” change to town clothes outfits and the inability to mix-and-match outfit pieces going forward. Several months ago, I bought the Chef outfit from the gemstore (using IRL money!) for my Sylvari with the intent to only use a couple pieces from the outfit to augment her starting town clothes (Sylvari diaper FTL). With this purchase, I finally had a nice Sylvari town clothes look that I was happy with. I’m not a roleplayer, but I am quite passionate about my Sylvari’s town clothes look. With this change to town clothes, I will no longer be able to use this mix-and-match outfit that I paid IRL money for. Had I known that we would not be able to mix-and-match outfit town clothes in the future, I would have never have purchased this town clothes outfit.

What’s even more upsetting than the town clothes change is that even though the functionality of the outfit I purchased will be changed and will NOT be what it was at the time of purchase, according to the customer support page for town clothes, I will not be eligible for a refund…

Customer support will be able to fulfill gem refund requests only for town clothes that become endless tonics. Such requests must be made after the Town Clothes system changes take effect; refund requests cannot be processed prior to the April Feature Build. Customer Support is not able to fulfill requests for refunds other than those related to Town Clothes that become endless tonics. This means that town clothes that become skins are not eligible for a refund.

This is pretty messed up. I paid IRL money for this outfit with the understanding that I would be able to mix-and-match. The ONLY reason I purchased this outfit was because of the ability to mix-and-match. When I made my purchase, development of the revamped town clothes system was well underway, but there was absolutely NO warning at the time of purchase that the mix-and-match functionality would be going away. The item that I paid IRL money for is being changed from what it was at the time of purchase and I will no longer be able to use the mix-and-match functionality going forward. This item is completely worthless to me now. Yet I will not be able to get a refund.

I hate getting overly emotional and using the term “bait and switch” rashly. But with the functionality changing and becoming more restrictive coupled with the inability to get a refund, it’s honestly kinda feels like one.

I know I’ll be FAR more cautious paying IRL money for items in the gem store going forward.
