Yep, haven’t been getting any Group Effort rewards when on a main server, but got them on overflow. Also, defend events (Fort Marriner, Postern Ward, and Trader’s Forum) were not spawning at all on SF main last night.

I knew before day 1 that Tengu would not give a skritt to what’s happening at Lion’s Arch.
I’m betting that the Tengu care about what’s happening in Lion’s Arch since it’s a direct threat to the Dominion of the Winds (based on the arrows, they’re obviously keeping a close eye on what is going on ). And I speculate that some Tengu may even feel a certain amount of sympathy toward what is happening to the citizens of Lion’s Arch. But given their distrust of non-Tengu and that most of their population has lived isolation for a long period of time, it is likely difficult for them to determine who is trustworthy and who isn’t in this particular conflict. Protection of the Dominion and its citizens are absolutely the top priority for the Tengu’s leadership and opening the gates for non-Tengu who they aren’t sure are trustworthy is likely viewed as just too much of a risk for such an isolationist community.
Henge of Denravi
We invaded their homeland(insert Native American reference here) and forced them to built a giant wall to keep us out. Do you really childishly think after all, they will help us?
The Dominion of the Winds isn’t their homeland (its their refuge). And the races of Tyria never invaded the Dominion of the Winds (they let the Tengu build their refuge and just left them alone). So I don’t think the Native American reference really fits when it comes to the walls of the Dominion of the Winds.
As far as Native American history references in the history of the Tengu, I think Tengu Wars in Cantha comes closest (which may be a reference to the American Indian Wars). However, the walls of the Dominion of the Winds were not a direct result of the Tengu Wars.
I think there may be a couple stronger IRL historical references with the Dominion of the Winds…
1) The Tengu were forcibly driven away from Cantha, which may be a nod to the forced expulsion of the Jewish population from Spain in 1492.
2) Due to the events that drove them from Cantha, they’re incredibly isolationist and distrustful of anyone who is non-Tengu (understandably so). So when they sought refuge in Tyria and built the Dominion of the Winds, they built a great wall to keep Tengu in and all non-Tengu out (out of a fear that the past could or would repeat itself). And the level of their isolationism that we see with the Tengu is very much akin to the Japanese isolationism (Sakoku) between 1633-1853.
Given the Tengu’s history, their isolationist attitude, and severe distrust of non-Tengu, it makes a lot of sense that what few Tengu were out-and-about in Lion’s Arch would pull-back to their safe-haven and shoot anything and anyone that isn’t Tengu.

I personally appreciate ArenaNet giving us fair warning about this huge and potentially permanent change. It gave me an opportunity to grab a bunch of screenshots for nostalgia and do all the goofy things I’ve been meaning to do in the zone, but never got around to doing until the news of the next update came out. Not to mention it gave the community the opportunity to preserve as much as they could via the Wiki, Project Eavesdrop, screenshots, videos, etc.
Also, after learning about this study, I don’t fear spoilers anymore. http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2012/07/26/157430614/it-was-all-a-dream-or-turns-out-spoilers-are-good-for-you

You should have called your thread "Taimi"s Kitty Mouth".
Clever. Took the inspiration and renamed it “Taimi’s Kitten Mouth.” So it looks like the profanity filter caught something (but really didn’t).
Henge of Denravi
Saw Taimi say this in Lane 1 when one of the chain attempts failed. At first, I thought that it was kinda cute that the little asura kid was talking about kittens. Then I remembered that GW2’s forum profanity filter uses “kitten” to cover up bad language. And looking at the context, it appears that “kitten” may indeed be covering up some foul language that Taimi is saying.
For shame Taimi! We need to wash your mouth out with soap.

and ETA for when I might get it?I’m sorry to hear this, cillercammy. Can you tell me if you received the Green Quaggan Backpack but not the Mini Mr. Sparkles, or did you not receive any rewards at all?
I suggest that if you do not have your reward(s) by Noon, please submit a ticket by clicking Support above and then use “Submit a request” to let us know what we can do to help. Thanks!
Thanks for your response! I did receive my green quaggan backpack. However I still havnt received my mr. sparkles
If you haven’t already, you should submit a support ticket. All reports that I’ve heard from those who were eligible and received both indicate the mini should have come in the same mail as the backpack.
Be sure to include the date and approximate time of your gem purchases in your ticket. And it’ll likely be helpful for the customer service folks if you also include that the ArenaNet Blog Post announcing the Black Lion Wintersday Rewards Event indicated , “you will receive your gift based on gems you purchase and gem codes you redeem between 12:01 AM December 1 and 11:59 PM December 31 PST.”
I included the above info in my ticket last night…my issue has been investigated and I received notification this morning that my ticket was transferred to ArenaNet’s Game Support Team for further assistance. Progress!

Primordus will awake in this coming update.
Primordus is already awake (and has been for 207 Tyrian years). We just haven’t gone after him yet.
Primordus was the first of the Elder Dragons to awaken in Tyria. Primordus’ original resting place was in a cavern deep underground, where it was assumed by the asura to simply be a statue emitting a high amount of magical energy. For this reason, they built the Central Transfer Chamber near the dragon. Primordus was initially supposed to awaken in 1078 AE, but upon the defeat of its most powerful general, the Great Destroyer, its awakening was delayed by two generations, until 1120 AE. After its rise, the other Elder Dragons began to stir, one by one.

There is the chance though that he’s going to start causing more trouble and we’ll have to go after him next.

Gaile,
If you happen to have a moment, what was the cutoff time for the gem store purchases to qualify for the gifts? I purchased 1,600 gems on 12/2 (and got the backpack in the mail today). And purchased 8,000 gems for belated gifts to friends and such on 12/31, but didn’t get the mini in the mail with my backpack. The scoop on Reddit is that the mini and the backpack should have arrived in the same mail.My 12/31 purchases were between 9-9:30pm PST (i.e. after reset). I’m concerned that my 12/31 purchases didn’t qualify because they were after 0:00 UTC. And it appears some other folks on Reddit may be in the same boat.
Please read the article I linked. I don’t know anything other than that about the eligibility times of the promotion, sorry!
You can submit a ticket to inquire about this, if you feel there is an error. But please read the article to make sure you’re not simply mistaken in your expectations. Thanks.
Hmmm, it appears from the blog announcement that the eligibility time should have been based on PST, not UTC…
In early January, you will receive your gift based on gems you purchase and gem codes you redeem between 12:01 AM December 1 and 11:59 PM December 31 PST.

Thanks Gaile!

CoSA never disbanded. The rumor started with a minor offhand joke comment from a non-CoSA SF player. SFers found it pretty amusing that so many players from other servers rejoiced at the “news” of CoSA’s “demise.” So all of SF, CoSA and non-CoSA alike, played along to see how long it’d last.

I feel like this thread is a SF eulogy… At the beginning of the season, we were a favorite for first or second, and now… well, when I went into our BL at around 4pm yesterday (which is when we usually have some decent numbers starting to get on before primetime) and KN had 2 waypoints on our map, it was just a “WTF guys” moment. It’s like no one gives a kitten anymore, and for the guilds that DO go out there and try, it’s starting to wear on us a bit, b/c we’ll go out there, paper some keeps/towers, etc, and when we get off, we HOPE that others will keep flipping, and it just doesnt happen. All the keeps we flipped are right back to t3 2 hrs later, and thats how they stay until the next day. It wasn’t like that even a month ago.
It seems like a combination of things has really kind of destroyed a lot of our WvW situation… the 2week beating that HOD gave us, losing to DH for second place in the league when we THOUGHT we could win, the ending of the WvW season achievements (which means the PvEers have nothing left to do in WvW), etc… Idk.
I’m in no way trying to diminish anything the other servers are doing right now b/c it seems like AR in particular has stepped up tremendously (as well as some of the other servers), so I have nothing but respect for AR and wish them the best in their rise. It feels like as other servers make progress, SF is doing the opposite. So we really have some things to work on as a server, at least from my perspective.
If this post came off as me trying to make excuses or whining, that’s not what I intended. I’m simply making an observation from inside of SF.
GL to everyone with the rest of the week!
During the season, nearly my entire friends list was in WvW almost exclusively. Now that the season is over, I’m seeing those same friends (friends who are avid WvWers and are not the giving up type) all over the game…WvW, dungeons, fractals, open world PvE, Wintersday, sPvP, etc, etc. It was many of the same faces who were carrying us through the season. Just speculating (not making excuses), but I suspect what we’re seeing right now is some of those people stepping back a little from doing WvW 100% of the time and taking a little time to catch-up on enjoying other aspects of the game. I’m sure our WvW will perk back up once folks feel rested and a little less burnt out.
Henge of Denravi
There was nearly nothing that made it an WvW-reward: no badges, no siege, no wexp booster, very little wxep… every achievment chest has the same or a better connection to wvw!
Now that’s a lie because we got a Taste of WXP, which gave us a rank. Yeah, we should have gotten more, but still, they didn’t want to give people too much of a lead over newbies.
It’s not a lie. They’re not saying that we didn’t get anything WvW-related whatsoever. They said “nearly nothing that made it an WvW-reward” and “very little wxep.” In other words, they already took into consideration the Taste(s) of WXP that we got as a reward And is pointing out that what we actually got was so incredibly limited that it wasn’t enough to make the overall reward feel like a WvW reward.
Henge of Denravi
Furthermore the only reward that I am suggesting Season winners get is a permanent finisher based on your servers placement in your bracket. I feel like every server had players that worked hard. I am from HoD and as a result I get the Dolyak Finisher, but I know that SF and DH (to say nothing of those who placed #2 and #3 in Silver, Gold, and EU Bronze, Silver and Gold) worked hard and improved over the course of season one and I cant help but feel empathy for their players who undoubtedly feel robbed.
I was certainly expecting each of the top 3 spots in each bracket to be getting a finisher, and I know many other WvWers in Bronze were expecting the same too. The 1st place winners in each bracket were pretty much set in stone at the very beginning of the season and each of those servers went undefeated all season. Those servers got rewarded for something that everyone already knew they’d accomplish.
It’s the servers who were clawing their way to the 2nd and 3rd place spots that was what people watched with great interest. The 2nd and 3rd place positions in each bracket should have also been rewarded for those efforts.
And I concur that the general rewards for all servers is incredibly lackluster. I can easily make more on PvE for a lot less effort. Some unique rewards to encourage players to become involved in WvW would have been FAR more welcome.
Incredibly disappointing all around.
Henge of Denravi
and people I’m happy to be fighting against: HoD, SF, GoM, FC, ET, DR, AR, and honorary mention to NSP and IOJ, looking forward to fighting you guys again soon.
You only mentioned 7 of your 8 Bronze League opponents. Poor Kaineng!
Henge of Denravi
Honestly, who cares whether HoD purposefully tanked or not. Had things been different, whichever server ended up in HoD’s position would have simply fulfilled the same role as the bronze league’s heavy hitter. There are massive population and coverage differences between the various servers in this league. And any server at that position in the ladder would have likely also had an undefeated victory.
Henge of Denravi
To reiterate…
After what happened to the last thread, please let’s reserve this thread for discussion among SF, DH and ET players only.
Our last thread devolved after players from other servers who were not involved in this particular match-up felt the need to start posting in our match-up thread and baited people into a flame war. When other servers ceased posting in our new match-up thread, we’ve been able to have a civil thread.
If you’re not in this match-up, please stop posting in this thread. This thread is to for the participants of this match-up to discuss the current match-up. If you’re from another server and like to extend congratulations to this match-up’s winner, there’s a dedicated league thread just for that purpose.
Also, the hows and whys of SF’s performance as compared to DH was already discussed extensively in the previous thread. We seriously do not need to go there again.
Henge of Denravi
If you guys had 2 maps queued (EB/SF BL) then you definitely had 2.5, because there was a large zerg in our BL right from the get-go. And didn’t you take a keep in ET as well?
If memory serves me right, at reset there was no queue for EB. I remember this because it’s usually the first map that gets queued along with our BL, I arrived like 15 minutes late for reset and got a surprise seeing there was no queue
Of course, as time went on we eventually queued it, but at least for the start of the matchup there was no queue in EB.
I chatted with Katie last night and this particular topic came up. She also indicated there was no queue for EB on reset. So we were barely queuing one map (less than 5 min wait time), when we’re used to reliably queuing 2 maps with some extra folks on a third non-queued map.
As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t definitively speak on the EB queue since I didn’t try to get onto that map. Our reset turnout was far worse than I originally thought.
Henge of Denravi
(edited by Manoa.5897)
Typically, any claims that SF is able to pull more than two queues (with exception to the Season 1 kick-off) is an exaggeration.
So you guys showed up in normal force then? IDK, it seemed to me you guys had 3 queues by the fight you were putting up, but I could have been mistaken. The point is that you guys showed up for reset night. Perhaps you were diminished somewhat, granted, but I think it’s fair to say on that night at least we fought an SF that showed up and we won. That’s my only point, and it’s not to brag but instead to counter the excuses (or rationalizations as you call them). If you guys showed up with 2 queues (as is normal for you, apparently), then we fought the normal SF (even if slightly diminished).
On resets, we can usually expect 2.5 maps. Last reset, we were barely at 2 full maps.
Henge of Denravi
Met 2 Eredon Terrace Scout Rangers using speedhack in Sorrow’s Furnace Borderlands. Guild tag [Rtw]
Ranger’s are fast.
Yes they are, however, they should also not be zooming past me in an irregular blinking fashion while I’m running next to them with +50% movement speed in stealth. I was scouting their movement patterns and watched them take camps similarly. I’ve seen it before and I’m not oblivious to that behavior.
Just record it, report it to exploits@arena.net and move on. No point in discussing it here (plus, mods don’t like that kind of talk).
Henge of Denravi
Well in the previous thread someone flat out said SF had two queues, and I fought your zerg in Dh bl multiple times (wiped them at garry, wiped them once at hills, got wiped a few times), that was close to a queue zerg (though perhaps not a queue zerg, can’t say for sure).
I’ll buy that we had two queues. Any claims above two I’ll question.
If and when we’re pulling a queue, most instances we’re only at most pulling 2 queues at a time…EB (aka PUG paradise) and whatever borderland the main force is focusing on. I didn’t attempt EB on reset, so I can’t say whether it was actually queued (but odds are it was). SF-BL was on and off queue that night. And when our BL did pull a queue, it was a pretty short wait time (I was shocked that I didn’t have to wait a half hour to an hour to get into our home BL). As far as the other two BLs, I bounced between the two quickly before I entered the SF-BL queue and had no issues getting into either.
IIRC (my memory is hazy), our main force moved from our SF-BL to DH-BL later in the evening. So there’s a chance that DH-BL may have been queued on reset too (I got in easily because i moved with the main force, but may have popped over to queue after I got in). However, that only moved the queue from one BL to another. It certainly didn’t create a third queue.
Typically, any claims that SF is able to pull more than two queues (with exception to the Season 1 kick-off) is an exaggeration.
Henge of Denravi
I’m sorry but you guys showed up in force on reset night (maybe not at max but pretty close, you definitely had 2 queues, probably had 3, and almost had 4) and we beat you.
I’d really like to know where these massive queues were on reset. I certainly didn’t see them. Only queue I encountered was on our home BL with a whopping wait time time of 2 minutes. And there were at least several folks commenting on mumble how participation on reset was pretty light and how they were amazed they were able to get into our home BL on reset night.
As for the rest of your post, what you saw in the other thread was a bunch of disappointed people trying to rationalize the hows and whys our server lost momentum. Some of the points that were brought up may have been a little silly. But many were legitimate issues that compounded our already declining momentum proceeding this match and they aren’t excuses. We are most definitely not nearly as strong as we were earlier in the season and folks are just throwing out ideas/theories on how and why.
SF folks trying to rationalize why our server lost momentum and why we’re weaker now in no way means DH didn’t beat us fair and square. The score tells the story.
Henge of Denravi
Solo roamers are vital to us on DH, they make sure all our siege is refreshed, help take and defend camps, walk yaks, take ruins, and scout. Its not all about the havoc squads and zergs, without our solo roamers doing those things we wouldn’t be having nearly as much success.
100% agree with this. Solo roamers do this stuff on SF too (and more!). And despite what you’re seeing in this particular match-up there, there actually are many here who recognize their hard work and appreciate everything they do for our server.
Henge of Denravi
I don’t see why you think there are sore losers. We only accept our fate as it is. If it were something new for us, then maybe we’d be a bit mad, but the truth is, most of us fully expected to lose this one.
^This
Sure, there was some hope that maybe we’d win this match. But most folks were still pretty realistic about our chances (which became particularly clear at reset). Yes, there’s disappointment that we didn’t make second in the league. But despite that disappointment, most of SF’s WvW regulars are still incredibly pleased with how much we’ve grown since the beginning of the year and our performance in Season 1 considering the cards we were dealt.

Also, DH only had 1 sure-loss (as they only faced HoD only once), while SF had 2. Schedule wasn’t at SF side aswell…
While DH had only 1 sure loss to HoD, remember the last match before seasons began FC was beating DH by 60k points so we really could have gone 0-3 the first 3 matches but we managed to beat FC in week 2 in the final hours giving us 1-2 start. So you could have made the argument that when seasons started DH had 5 matches they could have lost easily.
I think you missed the point Jeknar was trying to make.
Out of the eight non-HOD bronze league servers, five of them had two sure-losses against the league’s heavy hitter twice (or in the case of FC, 3 times). Only two of those five servers (SF and FC) were forced to face against that heavy hitter in two back-to-back match-ups.
Three of the non-HOD bronze league servers only had to face against HoD once. DH was one of those servers.
DH had a bit more of a favorable league schedule than SF (as well as all the other bronze league servers who had to face HoD twice or more this season).

Is anybody else surprised by the DH/SF matchup this week? Some points
1) SF beat DH in their first match http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/45/115
2) HoD beat DH in their first match by about 65k http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/28/119
3) HoD beat SF in their first match by only about 50k (and subjectively it really was our toughest fight) http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/28/121
I was expecting SF to beat DH. But as of right now DH has a healthy lead. What’s going on? Is DH just hungrier?
TL;DR – DH had 3 solid weeks to recoup after their one match against HoD in Week 3 and had some pretty strong momentum going into this match. SF lost momentum after their two back-to-back matches against HoD in Weeks 4-5 and wasn’t able to recoup that lost momentum before this match.
Henge of Denravi
In regards to the current DH/SF matchup perhaps nobody said it better than Manoa:
The SF in Dec 2012 is not the same server that you’re seeing now. Just as the HoD in Dec 2012 is not the same server we’re seeing now. And just as the ET in 2012 is not the same server we’re seeing now. And DH, and FC, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
At the end of the day, SF when we faced you I saw a lot of improvement. You all gave us some really fun fights, and I hope to face you again soon. I gained a lot of respect for most of your server over the coarse of our two week matchup, particularly those who came out week 2 despite losing week 1. However, you have to respect DH for really working hard and preparing for this matchup. DH lost to you all Week 1 with a significant point deficit. Week 7 DH came out swinging and showed that they had earned second place in Bronze league. Throwing out excuses as to why your server is currently losing rather than identifying weaknesses and working to improve them is probably why DH is beating SF this week.
I think what you’re seeing is a lot of people trying to pinpoint the exact causes for our population/coverage drop, and frustration and disappointment is coloring those attempts at rationalizing. Some are legitimate factors. Some may sound a little silly. Not one is the sole reason why we’ve seen a population/coverage drop in the final weeks (there’s never one problem), but each can certainly compound the underlying issue.
Personally, I think much of what we’re seeing right now is the end result of momentum ebbs and flows (see my earlier post). Like many servers in the lower ranks, SF can see swings in population/coverage depending on our momentum. And there’s no denying that 2 weeks straight of HoD impacted our own momentum (again, that’s not a jab at HoD, just talking about the ebbs and flows here).
All servers (especially in the lower ranks) have their momentum patterns. And DH and SF are simply at two different points in the momentum ebb/flow pattern. DH is currently flowing. SF is currently ebbing. Had DH just come off of some tough back-to-back matchups, they could very well have ended up in an ebbing momentum pattern too. And had SF just come off of a number of weeks of solid wins, we may could very well have ended up in a flowing momentum pattern. Nobody should be griefing DH for the good fortune of being in a flowing pattern. And nobody should be griefing SF for having the not-so-good fortune of being in an ebbing pattern. Both servers have shown considerable improvement from the past and should be proud of that progress.
But coulda, shoulda, wouldas. It’s been a good season and we should all be congratulating ourselves on a great first season. Not bickering with one another.

This is the reason I have no respect for SF as a server from the impression I fought against them the first 2 times.
When they are winning all their fair weathers come out. http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups/history/20
When they are getting beaten, even ET show more fighting spirit than them. http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups/history/22
When we were falling down the ranks together with ET, at off peak hours when we own nothing and start trying to take back our stuff, ET will push too and help take pressure off us. But SF? They don’t even try.

The huge zerg that spawn camp us 24/7 1 week ago just mysteriously disappeared.
Anyone reaching back to a year ago (when server transfers were still free and everyone and their brother was abandoning lower ranked servers and dogpiling onto the top tier servers) is really trying a little too hard to get their jabs in.
Here’s the real skinny (and it’s no mystery, it was even pointed out in that match-up thread above)…at that time, we had just lost a the majority of our organized WvWers to higher tier servers thanks to free server transfers. We went from having WvW guilds to having almost none and being reduced to random, unorganized PUGs who had next to no communication. As a result, our population/coverage/momentum tanked, our rankings sunk like a rock, and we dropped into the Glicko Ghetto.
(Seriously?? A year ago? During free server transfers? Talk about ancient history!)
