I’d argue that we “earned” our way out a long time ago, but broken maths is what’s going to keep us stuck here curbsomping far longer than Kain and DR ever had to do in order “earn” their escape from the Glicko Ghetto. :p

Also, I greatly dislike the argument that other servers should “simply just take a week off from WvW” to get rid of us. That’s not a solution, that just compounds the problem. Something like that just pushes ET’s and FC’s scores down even further (meaning that the next unfortunate server to end up in Tier 8 will see a massive rating drain and will likely be stuck in the Glicko Ghetto even longer than us).

Loosing points (or staying relatively flat) when you win by a landslide (this week by 164K points). Totally awesome stuff.

We can all agree that Glicko is “the problem” here. SF has to do what it takes it crawl its way out of the Glicko Ghetto. SF need to follow the Kain/DR example and utterly destroy us to the point of spawn camping us on every BL 24/7 in order to make it to T7.

I just don’t jive with the assertion that SF is fully capable of complete and utter domination but does not want to institute these measures. I want them to come out en masse to end this match-up so that we have a new big brother to cry to mom about!

1. There’s a little part of me inside that is absolutely thrilled that my “Glicko Ghetto” descriptor for Tier 8 (or more accurately, my boyfriend’s descriptor that I stole) is catching on.

2. Kain and DR’s situation (and the way they were able to claw out of the T8 Glicko Ghetto) is completely different than SF’s. In the new post-free server transfer reality, SF represents what a server can expect if they are unfortunate enough to drop down into T8 now that free server transfers are no more.

I feel for you guys, question is: how do ANet fix it? Separate ranking system for T7- ? Glicko works, extremely well, for T6+.

I know a former Blackgate player who is now on ET who would disagree with the notion that Glicko works extremely well for T6+. The most extreme examples of Glicko not working well are in Tiers 1 and 8, where there’s no rating ceiling and no rating floor. The rating gap between T1/T2 and T7/T8 makes it impossible to move up into/out of those tiers on your own accord (in other words, you have to wait for a higher rated server to implode and drop rating like a hot potato before you can have any hope at moving up).

Certainly couldn’t have been me specifically. I’ve been on your side as an active and vocal supporter of the silly notion that the T8 rating math is not fine for about a month as well (i.e. when the sadly now locked “In my opinion, t8 rankings need more attention” came about).

A good number of us SFers recognized the issue back then, but some were more optimistic than others about being able to claw our way out. With the severe rating backslide on 3/1 (even though we still won the match by a bloody landslide), I don’t think anyone can argue with you anymore that our true enemy in this tier is Glicko.

I’m not a bro, but still appreciate the sentiment.

Anytime! I stumbled upon it during the Mad King Jumping Puzzle outcry and love it.

Also, I feel the need to point out that the Sisyphean task should be the opponents, not the rating system itself.

SF is certainly the Sisyphean task for ET and FC, who have used the insurmountable odds and risk of failure to learn, grow and develop their strategies. (ET especially…seriously, hats off to ET for their defensive siege, I’m taking notes ). And there’s a pride of accomplishment when they overcome all odds to take an objective.

But for SF, the Sisyphean task (and our real enemy) is the rating system itself, not our WvW opponents. When the rating system is our Sisyphean task, there’s no risk for failure, no opportunity to learn, develop and grow. And no sense of accomplishment when we curbsomp the opposition for yet another week. Just frustration when our rating stagnates or backslides. With such stagnation and lack of challenge, people grow bored and seek out new challenges (either in PvE or in other servers).

Please know that this post isn’t intended to be a “poor pity us, the curbstompin’ winners.” But to illustrate the problem when you shift the Sisyphean task from WvW opponents to the rating system itself with the hope that any ArenaNet folks who may be reading understand why a certain level of volatility in the rating system is really needed.

Anyone with a competitive spirit would not want to be comfortable. Comfort breeds boredom, like doing a dungeon a hundred times, after a while, it becomes stale and stagnant, and you want to move on to something more, something new, something challenging.

That is why games put out new content all the time, that is why gamers want new content, or new games, or something to work for. They don’t want tedium to set in, hence why we play games.

And a gamer that wants to play competitive games, like WvWvW or PvP, while may enjoy the noob stomp from time to time, what really pulls a player into WvWvW is the hard fights, the tight fights, and the times when you bust though the wall and all chaos breaks loose.

Those are the moments that pull you back to the field.

Perhaps. Still, totally sucks that we can’t claw our way out of the T8 rating trap on our own (even though we’ve proven time and time again we shouldn’t be in this tier and it’s been brought up countless times by all servers in our tier) and instead have to wait and hope that a server in a higher tier stumbles so badly that they drop to T8. If that’s what it takes for a winning server to get bumped up to a higher tier, things are obviously not working right.

(I know I’m preaching to the choir, just feel the need to yet again vocalize my frustration on the topic )

As someone who both PvEs and WvWs, the Power of the Mists bonuses are pretty minuscule and aren’t much of a lure for PvEers. That’s not to say we aren’t a PvE paradise. We are a great server for PvEers, but only because we have a very strong PvE community and you’ll never feel alone when exploring the PvE maps.

Personally, I’d rather have our long deserved shot in a higher tier so we can finally have a challenge and so our WvWers can continue to learn and grow. Before we loose too many good people to PvE due to boredom and frustration that Glicko punishes us with a rating decline for “underperforming” even though we’re still curbstomping.

Another day, another JP puzzle thread. Please do a search next time.

Considering one week of “underperformance” (per Glicko’s standards, doesn’t matter if we’re curbstomping) will slide our rating back by 50 points, I’m sadly going to have to concur with the never sentiment. At the current rate, I just don’t have any hope left that we’re actually going to claw our way on our own, despite us curbstomping our opposing servers for well over a month (“things will balance themselves out with time” my bum).

Bearing in mind that anyone can edit the wiki, i’d go so far as to say that goethe’s model is incorrect, as the definition of ‘complementary colours’ necessitates one primary and one secondary colour, and neither purple nor green are primary colours.

Blue and yellow are complementary if you’re using the RGB color model (i.e. when you’re dealing with light and electronic systems that use it like computers).

But for traditional art media, you’re right. Blue would be complementary with orange and yellow with purple.

Loosing points (or staying flat) as our “reward” for curbstomping is becoming the new normal for us.

The week before last (2/22-3/1), we won by 126K points, but lost -51.919 rating. Even though we won by a significant margin, we nearly lost the most amount of points out of any NA server (NSP slightly edged us out at -52.663 when they lost their match). Other servers who won by similar margins (or by smaller margins) gained points.

Last week, we won by 163K points, but lost -0.122 rating. Other servers who won by similar margins gained a significant amount of rating.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. How much more do we have to curbstomp to get anywhere??

There’s a rumour that an anet artist let out that they have no current or near future plans on making anything based on Cantha, saying that want to stay away from cultural regions or something.

We all think this is a bad idea as I know a lot of us were hoping to see more of Tyria as a planet, but it now seems we will only see the Tyria continent for now with new content added to it; which is a shame.

It’s not rumor. It was confirmed by Josh Foreman in an interview that there was a Canthan District in Divinity’s reach that included a blend of Asian architectures. But it got negative feedback from China and Korea because since those gaming markets prefer a uniform design (i.e. no mixing of their own cultures). So it was nuked and was replaced by the Great Collapse (a link to the interview can be found under the wiki entry for the Great Collapse http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Great_Collapse#Trivia).

However, all hope may not be lost….

Cantha was my favorite GW1 region to work on. And I worked on every GW release. I know a lot of the dev team loved it and would love to revisit it. I kinda agree with critickitten about the negative aspect of tight corridors. Most of that came from hitting technological limits while trying to keep the epic quality of the concept art. I think we could do some really amazing things with those themes in our new engine. Certainly nothing is ruled out. I certainly encourage anyone to express your desire for a Cantha region in GW2 in a positive and friendly way. It could be years away, but it’s worth asking for.

Granted, this is only a one-time observation but this is even optimistic from what I saw this morning.

I set my alarm clock early hoping to see this mythical “EB completely capped by ET” craziness. (I just need a few more things for map completion…). We had absolutely no part of EB. Zero. Zilch. A small group of us let by a single commander managed to grab back must of our 1/3 before moving on to greener pastures (and me moving on to work).

Nah, I think Scumbag’s more frustrated that their friend was the one who bore the entire cost to upgrade our own BL. The guilds who had claimed the keeps apparently didn’t upgrade them. And apparently, none of our servermates contributed to any upgrades either.

You guys attacking is just the catalyst, not the root cause for that frustration.

O.o We aren’t kittening. A little history, we’ve been suffering from a nighttime coverage for ages gap as well, which is one of the (many) causes of why we landed here in T8 in the first place. It just so happened that when we landed here, our skeleton crew outnumbered your skeleton crew, which enabled us to take points during that type period.

Now, your skeleton crew outnumbers our skeleton crew. So now you guys have the advantage during that time period. So we’re recruiting so we can be competitive during that time period. I’m sorry if you take offense to this, but every server recruits (even those that are winning).

Look, we aren’t happy about us being stuck in this tier either. But please don’t get grumpy at us for curbstomping week after week. Get grumpy at ArenaNet and their broken rating system that is keeping us stuck here.

We have a lot of prominent WvW guilds, some with hundreds of members (cosa has 700+).

If they want to spam their emblems on a place instead of letting another guild, they should be paying for the upgrades. It’s logic. They are WvW-only guilds, they have funds specifically for WvW, which means upgrades and BPs.

There is no arguing this, it just makes sense. Claiming means they’re claiming the structure as theirs and their responsibility. It’s why the feature is there. I’m going to assume they fought for it, they upgraded it, they defended it. Claiming just to have your emblem on it (and no, I can’t recall getting buffs from any structure other than SM a couple of times) and then abandoning it is the mark of a kittenty guild.

1. Considering that a guild can only claim one objective per map, I don’t see how guilds (large or small) claiming structures is considered “spamming.”

2. Of course members of the claiming guild should be pitching in to upgrade and defend the keep. I never argued that they shouldn’t pitch in (my only point was that beyond protecting their influence investment of any AoW buffs they may be running, their incentive to do so is no more than any other WvWer).

3. I still wholeheartedly feel that objective upgrades and defense should not only one person’s or one guild’s responsibility. Everyone should pitch in and help TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. Of course a larger guild is going to have more resources and will be able to pitch in more than a solo roamer. But a solo roamer should still be pitching in as much as they are able. Not being member of a mega guild does not mean you have a “get out of jail free” card when it comes to purchasing upgrades or siege. Yes, you won’t be able to give as much to the effort. But you should still give what you are able. We’re all part of the same team, we should act like it and work together.

(Again, all of these viewpoints are from the perspective of a small predominately PvE guild who would likely be classified under the “solo roamer” category when it comes to WvW)

Guild claiming puts their emblem up on the giant banners of a fortress. Yes, if you’re going to advertise yourself like that, you better kittening pay up yourself. I guess some ‘trolls’ (because being obviously inflammatory isn’t nearly subtle enough to be called trolling) believe random WvWers running around should upgrade out of their own pockets, rather than the guilds advertising and chestbeating from those some keeps.

Since when is structure/camp claiming “advertising” and “chestbeating?” Sure the claiming guild gets a shiny banner with their guild emblem on it. But if someone doesn’t know which guild it’s associated with (which is very often the case), then that “advertising” means nothing since there is no brand recognition.

I can’t speak for the other individual that you are obviously directing your above comment at. But keep in mind my viewpoint is as someone from a predominately PvE guild and who has never once claimed a structure for our guild (since we can’t offer any AoW buffs). But I personally pitch in as much as I am able and wholeheartedly feel that every WvWer should do the same.
