Not implementing 2v2/3v3 arenas is a big mistake from Anet.
Wow has been very successfull with them for many years although having really poor class balance and worse official support.

Yeah it is indeed odd. They think that the only way to make competitive pvp is 5v5

On that note. Another question i now have is, they have no arena type mode? I thought they had 2v2 and 3v3 type modes on here. If they do have smaller pvp modes,how do they work?

The competitive mode is 5v5 conquest, similar as rbg battle of gilneas, every map has secondary mechanics to make it more interesting tho

Is pvp in this game balanced?
It’s not perfect, but they try.
There’s always a dominant build and profession but trust me, balance is 10 times better than wow. I’ve been playing a lot of WoD and some classes (dk, hunters, rdruids) are incredibly broken. There’s not such a thing here.
For those WoW players, what profession would you say feels similar to WW monks aesthetically? tbh idk, maybe thief but it’s more of a rogue class. They have good mobility and teleports as WW monks
How is the grind to level AND to get gear thats good for pvp?
For structured pvp (competitive) you don’t need to lvl nor gear at all. They give you instantly a lvl 80 character with everything you need. You only “grind” for skins and maybe a couple of skills/traits, but they are not necessary.
And last question, is there anything that WoWs pvp system has that you wish GW2 used and why? Yeah i wish GW2 had an arena game mode. But that’s not going to happen sadly.
You cannot make a competitive gamemode with more than 5 players per team. Period.
8 players+ is for casuals that want to get carried
what makes the best guild then, how much better they zerg another guild? at least in these types of game modes you can see how well each member of a team contributes to the game instead of a mess of 20 players in which half of them probably just get carried.

What you’re saying is absolute rubish. You talk about people being carried yet in this gamemode only 5 people are playing… how does that make a WHOLE GUILD the best?
You need at least a large portion of the guild to participate in the gamemode to mark it as the best guild.

We can only queue for pvp games inside the heart of the mists. That means that we will not be able to do so from our guild hall once the expansion comes out.
Does that mean that guild halls will exclusively be a hub for PvE guilds and not PvP ones?

I have stopped playing sPVP since the update that merged queues. I used to play a few solo games nearly every day. Now I barely play the game at all, and rarely queue for PVP.
It’s one thing to queue solo and face premades if that is all the game ever offered. It’s entirely different to completely remove a game mode that customers have been playing on a daily basis with no warning.
In addition, my gem purchases over the last year were made assuming I was supporting the game I was playing at the time, which included soloQ. I never dreamed that it would be completely removed from the game. I guess I was funding its demise instead.
I would really like to have the soloQ returned. If not as a separate game mode, maybe a checkbox so I can volunteer for longer queues in exchange for a strict 5v5 solo game.

Just pulled up your game history. I believe this is caused by us weighing party size so heavily to prevent stacking solos against pre-mades.
Since you seem to play near exclusively with a full party, we’ve preferred matching you against other full parties, of which there are fewer queued at any given time. This reduced selection limits match quality, which is why you get the occasional uneven matchup.
I have some changes coming next Tuesday that may help, and I’ll see about easing up the party weighting some now that we had some changes that came in last Tuesday that also helped.

It’s funny that solo arena was ruined by Skyhammer, and the same patch where map selecion was implemented soloQ got removed.
We never got to play a proper soloQ
We do plan to show the odds of winning as part of the final ladder when it’s released. We simply did not have the UI resources to get anything out in time for the test ladder.
Show MMR as well, it works in other games.
The harrassment will be the same anyway…

Why/How does this new match-making punish a single-profession team?
We reduce matchmaking score for duplicate professions, whether intentional or not. Do you think there are many others like your team?
Does that mean that if I play with my friend, who uses the same class as me, we are going to be punished?
What if I’m a bunker guardian while he is a dps greatsword guard? It’s not even the same playstile and we are not abusing any cheese at all.
Also, imagine that 2 mesmers are playing together. That’s really weak and loses many games, everyone knows that. On top of that you are also reducing their matchmaking score.
This also kills team variety. You are not giving new meta games and strats the chance to develop.
I think that premade vs premade shouldnt have this vote system.
Because every team will play only 1 map that they are prepared for (50% chances)
They can make a premade group that is insanely op at skyhammer and win half of their matches..
The most exciting piece of information I see here is that with the consolidation of ranked play Skyhammer and Spirit Watch should be going away when I queue solo.
Instead of admiting that skyhammer and spirit watch were bad maps, they used time and resources to create a tool to skip them.
The way I interpreted it is Solo Arena isnt being removed. It’s being merged. If the system works as it’s being described there, it will try to match you with solo players before it forces you to play with groups of 2, 3, etc. The same goes for team groups.
In the top 100 SoloQ you are often forced to wait 8+minutes at the prime time, and even then, you get teammates outside of the Top 1000. So with the new system in place, instead of getting low ranked SoloQ players, I’ll be forced to play against full teams… not sure I like the change. We’ll see :/

We waited for almost a year to get solo arena and now it’s merged into team arena one more time? And we should be excited about that?
The problem with pvp in this game is that every new addition removes something that was done before.
Game launched and we waited for paid tournaments to get released.
After some months they made paid tournaments 1 round.
Later they completely removed paid tournaments.
Free tournaments were also removed.
Then they removed glory and added another reward system (that is no better).
Another patch removed jewels, underwater combat, raid of the capricorn and underwater weapons.
And now solo arena is being merged with team arena one more time.
They keep working on features that will disappear, and meanwhile the pvp lacks basic features. The irony: they will remove everything but skyhammer.
Btw: give some titles as season rewards. They are easy to design and way cooler than some random gear.

They use the word “game mode” but they are talking about unranked queue.
They use the word “season” but they really mean “period where we test stuff”
They are really good at missleading people by choosing certain words
So I was right, now that jonathan sharp is no longer the head dev in PvP things are going to change.
However, don’t waste your times fixing the map because it will never be a good map. Just take it out of soloQ.
The 3 reasons that make it bad:
1) Pull = kill
2) Hammer is the 4th objective. If you have 4 objectives and 5 players, they are all going to 1v1 in different spots and the game is not balanced for 1v1’s
3) Side nodes have very poor vision
Even if 1) is fixed, the other reasons still make it a really bad map. Another example is spirit watch, which is also really bad because it is another 4 objective map.
Nifhel, Foefire, Kyhlo and Temple are 3 objectives with a situational 4th (you don’t always have to fight for the 4th)

ASP members should stream games no matter what the teams say. If the teams are playing teamqueue they are already showing their secret stuff to their opponents so it’s not a secret anymore…
If they want to keep their tactics secrets (roflmao) they should play in custom arenas as lordsoricky said.
So, to make it fair games from most well known teams should be casted (because if you only cast one team for example they will actually have a disadvantage).
However, I do think that the builds from the players shouldn’t be shown.
I was streaming some soloQ games to a couple of friends and they were really interested in the game. They found the combat very fast paced and fun and they were already thinking which classes they were going to play (thief and mesmer)
All this changed when i had 2 skyhammers in a row vs 3 and 4 engineers respectively.
They asked me: why is such a bad map in this game?
And i didn’t have an answer, so I would like to pass it to the Anet staff.

You can’t see if someone’s coming to you either.Wrong, you have good vision from the sidenotes all over the map. Just position yourself at the right places ^^.
But I agree with your other points.
I know you can get to some spots where you have vision but the problem is that you don’t see anything while capping So you cannot prepare for a 1v1, and you cannot prepare for a instakill pull.
The problem with skyhammer is not only the brekable glass, and the overpowered hammer.
There are more problems other than that that would still make it the worse map even if the previously mentioned were fixed. I’m going to list them:
- Permanent 4 objective map: You have 3 nodes and 1 skyhammer and you have to contest all of them. To do that you are forced to split the 5 players into 4 objectives. This means this map is totally focused on 1v1 and has no interesting teamfights. This is the reason why spirit watch is bad too.
On the other hand temple of the silent storm is slightly better because the 4th (and 5th) objective only spawn at a given time.
- The side nodes don’t have any vision of the map. You cannot deffend a side node and control the map at all. You are forced to a) leave the node b) camp it and afk there.
You can’t see if someone’s coming to you either, and this promotes again more stealth+pulls that we all hate.
- There are hundred of bugs with teleports, with the jumpers and with the skyhammer portal (it just killed me once entering). You can also fall down the map and survive, getting stuck until a whorm kills you.

Just happened to me in team arena, temple of the silent storm.
I downed one ele and he was rezing himself using the downed skill, and my hits would not interrupt his healing cast.
