I’ve had 3 crashes these last 24 hours all while at a world boss or in big zerg fights in wvw.
The heat here has been terrible so I am not sure if my pc isn’t cool enough but it does run good with other games. But I’ll try Mash’s suggestion to see if it will help.
Please Anet check what’s wrong as it’s really really annoying to crash during a boss fight or big zerg fight!
I’ve been testing / playing with this issue the last week. I’ve had process explorer up on my 2nd monitor, and noticed a few things. (If you do have a second monitor, I’d recommend running something that’ll let you keep an eye on memory consumption – it’s super handy. I use PE, but their are others I’m sure).
I’ve done a bunch of Teq, TT’s and VW’s and I haven’t crashed all weekend – Yay! Except one time during a VW when I was testing, slammed the settings to max, the memory consumption as expected spiked to 3gb+ and the client jumped off a cliff -_-
1. Definitely keep ‘Character Model Limit’ to lowest. Heck, I’d keep this to lowest even if I didn’t have this crashing problem (always do) – it’s an fps killer as well, and just holding down the alt or ctrl key (I forget which one) will make all players name pop up on screen if you really need to see them (handy to see zerg when stacking, etc). It’s fine on max in almost every other situation though.
2. Depending on your rig, you should be OK with ‘Textures’ on Medium – although Low is absolutely safest. I did each about half the time, and Medium definitely pushed it up there, but nowhere near as far as on max.
3. Periodically selecting the ‘Best Performance’ option in the drop down box – which is the same as setting everything to the minimum settings I suppose – seemed to, for want of a better term, flush out the memory (very technical ha!). And then you can put all the settings back up – do this manually on each one though. It almost always settled well below what it had been (like it had cleared out some stuff it no longer needed but was hanging on to???) and was surprisingly effective.
Anyway, results will vary of course, but as I said these two settings seem to be the main baddies, so finding your sweet spot with them should alleviate quite a few issues – at least if they are memory related.
Just as a sidenote, is this something ANet can fix? I would have thought that having your game crash when reaching a certain memory consumption would be a major problem? Other games must hit that surely? I play plenty of games that are far more taxing on my hardware than GW2, and they don’t crash all the time. I assume they either don’t hit the memory barrier or if they do, they still don’t crash?? But, I don’t understand all the technical stuff, so, yeah. Just some thoughts anyways. Hope it helps someone out a bit, and they can alleviate some crashing!
Has anyone noticed this ‘client crashing’ issue more recently? Like more in the last month or so?
I had this issue about a year ago. During big zerg events – Teq, TT, SW, etc – it would always crash, because the memory amount being used hit around 3.5gb (I was watching it in process explorer) and the client would crash. The usual scenario.
The temporary fix of course is to turn ‘Textures’ to low, and ‘Character Model Limit’ to Lowest – these seem to be the main two culprits in this. Just toggling them you can see the memory spike up and down. It would cap out at about 2.5gb, which seemed ok. But then the game looks not so great – but I’m willing to put up with it to be able to actually do content. Every other situation in game is fine.
But then the problem just went away – I’ve been able to run max everything, for some time now. It was still hitting high memory consumption, but wasn’t crashing. Until about 3-4 weeks ago.
Obviously, not every player is crashing the second it hits above 3gb, so what is the issue exactly?
I’m not ok with the game getting more casualized, but ANet wont change their mind on this one.
They will have to someday. Casuals come and go very fast and their supply is not infinite.
And hardcore is even smaller. Actually, while the number of casuals is not infinite, thier are more than enough people to keep cycling through for a long, long while.
Ewwww. No raids please. Hours and hours of grind, to maybe get a chance at a piece of loot, that takes years to get a full set. Yuck. Other games exist if you want that. I really hope they never, ever add raiding.
No need for refunds. You’ll get everything eventually anyway. Plus, leveling is so faceroll easy you could trait nothing and everything will pretty much fall over if you so much as glance at it. By the time you get to 80, you’ll have enough points and it won’t matter.
As for the rest of the world, it has no need or purpose there than being cool. Yes it would be cool, but there are gameplay disadvantages as well like trivialising waypoints, breaking map boundaries, trivialising JPs.
I’ve seen the way gliders work in HoT, and there are very few places in tyria where you could potentially break the map by gliding around. Besides, gliding isn’t “fly around until gravity eventually carries you to the ground” it’s “fly around until your arbitrary flying meter runs out and your glider crumbles like a stale cracker.” There would be no trivializing waypoints or jumping puzzles.
Really? I sure could have used gliding in the JP that leads to a vista in that dredge cave when I first started out. Bypass that gate you have to open, gliding to the next section. Gliding from the top of a tower over to the stretch that lead to the vista.
Then there is the new JP in LA. People were discussing gliding in that area and one person was saying that gliding from the top of the lighthouse would allow someone to get to the puzzle.
I’m sure there are other possibilities that clever people could think of to bypass a JP and also break out of a map.
The Metrica Province JP too. Would be super handy.
What level are you? The story bits unlock at certain levels – https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Personal_story
Otherwise, yeah, just explore and do events, hearts, hero challenges, etc.
Also, if you click the H button, and click the star on the left (story journal button) it’ll show you where you are at Personal Story wise.
Oh, and as noted, dailies are now a list that you can do any three, and you’ll get 10 AP. You can do the others also, but you get a flat 10 AP regardless. You also get a daily login reward item.

Hmmm. I did Teq twice yesterday – once with a pug map, and once with guild. In the pug map we had a commander who knew what to do – but I’d say about half the map ignored him. We still almost managed 50% even so. In guild we killed him with nine and half minutes left. I’m no amazing player, but the guild was organized and clear on what to do – which from what I could see was basically what the commander on the pug map had said, but everyone (well almost everyone) actually did what they were needed to do. I think once everyone knows what to do, it’ll get better as well.
Having said that, it seems they swung from once extreme to the other. They could ratchet his health back a bit probably, and make all the spots critable – apparently only the one spot is? I actually enjoyed that it was a bit more difficult.
Hmmm. I did Teq twice yesterday – once with a pug map and then later that night with my guild.
The pug one struggled, people ignored the commander and didn’t stack at the right spot, and their were a few afk’rs I think. We almost got him to 50% despite that, but it failed ultimately. When we did it in guild, everyone followed instructions and we had like nine & a half minutes left or so. It was a fair bit tougher, just because it takes much longer to burn him – that first phase is fun heh. Having said that, even on a pug map once people get used to it, I think it’s totally doable still. But you can’t really afford people just doing nothing.
Not sure if this way is as they intended, or if you’re only supposed to be able to crit that one spot. Guess we’ll see if they comment or patch something.
Is there any official explanation why this isn’t going to happen/taking so long to do?
From here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lwd/Just-Completed-Personal-Story-WHAT/first#post5215101
I don’t disagree. We’ve stated before that we hope to one day rebuild LW Season 1, but we’re focused on HoT development right now.
To me it seems a no brainer to eventually put it back in some form – why waste all that content you spent time making? Also, you could chuck on all sorts of new achievements and rewards – it would keep a lot of people occupied for a long time. And remember, heaps of people missed all of it, so to many it will be all new content anyway. But it seems they are rather occupied with HoT right now.
i don’t really get it… nothing against the lgbt community, have several friends who are, and legally i think they should have more rights, but why the need to put hot topic issues in a fantasy video game? In a game about unity and fighting dragons just seems like a good way to stirr up controversy and have more religion debates in trade chat and can see otherwise good people who just happen to have a religious belief getting banned just for having a discussion (even if in a polite/friendly manner)
why not put obama or hillary flyers up, or crosses or other religious symbols ingame too? Thought the whole point of a fantasy video game was to escape reality.
bunny trail but… why do voters even care about social issues atm when we are billions or trillions in debt atm in the usa. everything else seems kind of irrelevant in comparison to the giant problem that isn’t going away.
again (just to make it clear and i dont get banned for even posting this lol) i support the agenda, but I don’t get the need for it in a game. let the politicians and preachers fight in real life, ingame i just want to fight dragons and talk in trade chat without debates.
Being LGBTQ is not a political issue. It is a fact of life. And by your arguments, why have male and female genders in a fantasy game. Or relationships. Or different political factions. Remove any source of conflict between people or differences.
I like that this game has chosen to reflect all of the people who play it, not just some, in their NPCs. It’s inclusive.
You know there are LGBTQ in many many works of fantasy right? Game of Thrones is an immediate one that comes to mind. Even Orson Scott Card (staunch Mormon) chose to include a homosexual in one of his books.
Also… as a dude who happens to be gay, I have no agenda, other than to live my life and to be treated with the same respect all people should be treated with. We don’t hold meetings where we discuss strategy or have some secret plan to convert the world. I think you meant to say, you support equality for all people, not a gay “agenda”.
Please understand – I’m not attacking you, and I’m not angry… I’m just perplexed when I see these points being made. I don’t get it.
Yep. ^^^^^
Absolutely nothing at all. It’s terrible all around. I’m shelving my Ranger until they ever fix it. She’s my main too – I’m sort of heartbroken tbh.
While yes, it was nice for ANet to clarify what they would be doing for the next expansions, but they clearly failed to come up with a solution or even understand the actual issue – that is, that people don’t want to pay for things they already have.
Let’s assume that 3 years from now another expansion comes out, giving us, the core GW2, HoT, and Expansion2. What they should do pre-expansion is sell all three separately (to get the people who don’t pay attention; sorry but it works), sell all 3 as a bundle with the core and HoT discounted, and finally just sell expansion3 separately.
It’s not hard. It really, really isn’t.
They would argue they are not making you pay for things you already have.
Think of it this way. If they removed the free base game offer, you would still be paying $50.
Do you understand this concept? Take away all the “free” stuff, and you, me, Obama, the Pope, the lizard people in the center of the earth, the aliens, the FBI van sitting outside your house – we all pay $50. That’s what the xpac costs. All the other stuff is meaningless. You are not paying again.
They could have avoided all this hoohaa by simply having the xpac on it’s own at $50. I actually think they should have done this.
But it’s less incentive for new players – it’s a carrot for them to buy in.
Now, you might not like the price. But it is what it is. It’s $50. Personally, even with the free char slot, it still seems pricey for the lack on content info I’ve seen. I’m still waiting till they’ve shown all they are going to – then I’ll decide.
But if it’s destroyed how will the Queen transverse it without shoes?
Logan will carry her. Because reasons.

$50 for a new players is so reasonable… why we need to pay full price for expansion.
its like you having a Big Mac. and you want a Coke. you have to pay a Big Mac Meal price…….
if you are veteran already purchased think about. you happy to pay a full Meal price to JUST have a Coke?
I’m really hungry now. -_-
Just out of curiosity, how have you only just now heard about all this? Everyone has been going bananas over these changes for ages now. Have you been away? :-P

As amount of people kittening about Arena’s kittened up pricing policy is definitely greater than of those who preach to “Stay calm and just pay up”.
When I was learning customer service (back in the days before the internet, if you young pups can imagine such a world), we had a saying:
Each happy customer tells 1 other person.
Each unhappy customer tells 10 other people.
Except in this situation if those 10 other people are new players, they get a fantastic deal -_-
Considering a lot of people will be getting Windows 10 free, and in the next few months, this is probably quite important.
As far as we know, Lion’s Arch will get another makeover since Scarlet’s Invasion. Certain areas will be remained due to the input of players. In-game events? I wouldn’t doubt there’s some mini-event of some kind. Colin has hinted about something that will ‘eat’ our Dragonite Ore. or whatever it’s called, around that time.
Again, we’re not 100% sure.
Baby Karka pet! munch munch munch :-D
Can also confirm. My guildies were talking about it and I headed off to see for myself. Ran all the way across the zone without seeing a single NPC or mob (at times with my guild leader defending me because he could see them), dove into water to see what that would do. Nothing, still had my greatsword equipped and no weapon skills assigned. Invisible vistas. Somehow I didn’t die at all, but it was very strange seeing NO other life in the zone whatsoever.
I blame the Flame Legion.
I had this. But the mobs were there at first, then just vanished – I saw them just disappear. I could still get poi and waypoints, but not hearts and skill points.
Relogging fixed it, temporarily. But then I started dying from nothing and randomly equipping weapons.
Map chat was nuts too – everyone was experiencing some wacky goings on.

ANet already said they would help anyone out who just bought the core game and would like to make the change to a HoT pre-purchase.

Apparently not. You get a refund and lose your account / progress.

they are waiting… if the sale go well. they will just keep ignore.
Pretty much. They’ll bunker down. Those new players will sustain them I’m sure.
Look the expansion first of all is worth the $50
Why?
What have they announced that makes it worth $50?
They’ve made a lot of promises, but right now, until they actually lay out what we are getting, you’re gambling on hype and vague promises.
Isnt the expansion 1 map split into 3 biomes though?
No, No, NO, a thousand times NO! There are multiple PvE maps with 3 biomes. Where are people getting this idea from???
Perhaps because ANet have told us practically nothing about all these supposed new area’s, maybe?
I’d say if you like to beta content before it becomes available to everyone, you should pre-order. You will have access to any up coming open betas so you don’t have to rely on farming for a beta portal or hoping your name gets picked from the mailing list.
The only other thing I can think of is it will upgrade your account so as soon as HoT launches you will be ready. Would think you’d need to patch/download the new content but the second it becomes live you will be ready to do what ever you have to, to jump right in.
As with most games these days, everyones client will be updated regardless of whether they buy HoT or not – buying will just grant access to the content.
Well, I now know what I’ll do.
I’ll just quietly wait for the next expansion pack and I’ll just buy the new bundle with free HoT included. Simple.
Cheers everyone.
I thought of this too lol. But it’ll be a three year wait :-D

I get that the price of the expansion is €44,99, and that the game is included just to avoid the problems you had with for instance a certain other MMO Whose Name Shall Not Be Named which required you to buy core game + 3 expansions to enjoy the 4th expansion…
But how is this fair to those that actually went out and bought GW2 core, in anticipation of HoT? Those that spent €35ish now spent that for “nothing”?
A bundle offer is great, but there should be an “upgrade only” option for those that don’t need the core game.It was stated that Support would grant HoT to people who recently purchased the game. Probably within like 2 weeks or so, I’m guessing.
Except, it seems they are not – http://imgur.com/zPywVMI | http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3a95r8/to_those_who_said_anet_will_support_people_who/
It’s confusing because in another reddit thread you have an ANet rep saying they will, as you noted.
Also, as regards HoT, the whole 30 days thing is somewhat sketchy, as ANet have been pushing sales since the xpac was announced, several months back – which is when they stated you needed to first buy the base game. So, if refunds or upgrades are going to be offered, it should be anyone who bought the game after that date, thinking they needed it – but actually didn’t.
So bogotter make a video about the debacle.

You can’t take seriously any anet promoted youtuber/streamer like bogotter or wooden potatoes. They can’t be trusted because they benefit from advertising this game.
He actually points this out right at the start, as a disclaimer. But he still criticized ANet to some degree.
I agreed with some of what he said. Just wait. That’s what I’m doing. I’m not paying anything until I get more information. What they’ve released so far, for me, doesn’t justify the $50. And their shady / incompetent marketing hasn’t helped either.
Waiting for more info, then can determine if will buy or not.

If you had fun with the game already and you are sure that 50$ will bring you hundreds of hours of fun, go ahead and preorder.
It’s not about what you get, it’s about what you will get in the future.
How can we be sure though? They have released so little info on what content we are getting, that you are gambling at this point in time.
Waiting till nearer release loses you nothing, other than guaranteed beta access. If they eventually reveal tons of content and zones, which I hope happens, grab it then and you can be satisfied you’ll get value for money.
I’d wait. Unless you are gagging to get in the beta and have that title I suppose. Otherwise you lose nothing.
It is an expansion whether you like it or not. Get over it.
Surely an expansion is something that can be purchased to add to an existing product? But that’s not possible anymore. HoT is Guild Wars 2 now. Their is no extra add on under their new packaging. They’ve removed just being able to get vanilla gw2.
Does it expand upon the core game? Yes
Would be great if they could tell us exactly what we are getting for our money though.
Facts first please ANet – I don’t pay on hype and promises.
you’ve missed the point entirely.
No. The blind outrage has missed the point. The expectation that ArenaNet can see through time with perfect clarity misses the point (and is pretty dang laughable considering they still don’t known when they’re going to release but people act like they had this all planned out from the outset…). That people are ignoring that ArenaNet has expressed a desire to make things right for people who bought the game recently misses the point.
Asking people to focus on the problem and not get wrapped around the axel that the FAQ stayed current with released information is most definitively NOT missing the point.
That’s just it, this wasn’t some unforeseen future that just crept up and hit them in the face, it was a conscious decision they made. There was no need to foresee the future, they didn’t need to see through time, they said one thing and then did another consciously.
You underestimate the effort it takes to coordinate a games release. There is so much going on, and with E3 that just passed one day ago.. They updated this FAQ as soon as possible and addressed the forums and those who had concerns about already purchasing the game.
People like you won’t let it go and are making so many excuses. If you don’t like the direction of the game / company, then why are you still here? Because your negativity won’t change anything it only makes it worse with this dirty propaganda. You have a choice here, either take it or leave it.
Then why did they not announce it to the community when they changed the FAQ then?
It came down to players retrieving cached web pages before they admitted they changed it.
Can we get the number of new PVE maps in HoT?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: MashMash.1645
No. Just give them your money and start hoping.
Wait… keeping a FAQ current is now evil?
No. But telling people for months and months that they needed to purchase the game before HoT drops, then on the day pre purchase is announced, give it away for nothing, then try to covering their tracks, is.
Unless you are seriously trying to tell us they made that decision on the day of pre purchase? They knew, and knowingly were deceptive, not telling the community or potential new players – profiting off of that info in the meantime. If people had known, they would have waited.
Exactly, all those people who claim that HoT does not have enough content must have played some leak version, because they sure sound like they do. People are getting ridiculous.
Equally people saying that it is worth $50 are also being ridiculous. ANet have revealed so little of the actual content. I pay on facts, not dreams and promises.
I believe that they’ve already revealed what HoT is going to have. There are not vast items they’re adding that they haven’t already mentioned or shown.
Is that a joke? We know next to nothing about the content, yet they want our money now. No thanks. I might pay after they tell us exactly what we are getting.
I buy on facts, not dreams, hopes and promises.
I pulled the trigger for the $100 upgrade on a HOT account so I could play with the new shinies. I was taking a leap of faith you would do right by us veterans, especially if we preordered. Please do not prove me wrong now.
I’m waiting till they show what we get for our money. They have failed to do so, so far. I can wait.
Will people that don’t buy HoT be able to participate in the new guild activities? Or is that locked behind the expansion also?
All I see are people complainig about not getting gems or chracter slits for buying the expansion. You already do not have to pay a subscription fee. I have never seen a community of players whine about not getting free stuff added to a game so much. Maybe it is the non subscription that has created this mentality but arenanet does not owe you guys anything but a game that you have bought to play. Thats it period.
I just want to know exactly what I’m getting for my money. ANet haven’t provided this information. When they do, I can decide what to do.
Not just going to buy based on hype, promises and no information. Otherwise you’re just gambling and hoping.
After checking through the forum , I am very disappointed on most of the players of Guild Wars 2 ever since the announcement and pre-purchase were released . First of all , many of you (old players) have proclaimed that the price is unreasonable for old players due to the fact that the price is $50 for the expansion with a free core game provided in the package. This is truly an unforgivable way of forcing players to support the devs IF they really meant to do that , but let’s be clear over here … The prices were CLEARLY stated to be sold for new players who are interested in the game itself, since the original price for guild wars 2 standard edition was $39.99 , and now it’s $49.99 .Which means, the expansion alone costs about $10 in this case. That means there will be another standalone edition for the expansion for the older players to purchase sooner or later.
If you’re thinking how sure can I be , it’s pretty obvious. What would happen if they decided to not do anything about the prices ? They will lose lots of old players and fans (excluding brainless fanboys/girls) compared to the quantity of new players buying the $49.99 package which are estimated to be not even more than 5% of the current
population of old players.Of course there will be people who are willing to buy the packages without hesitation and overlook the ‘fairness’ of prices for the old players, but is it confirmed that the expansion that players bought will be on their old account ? Since Gw2 has already mentioned that it will include the core game itself when you purchase it. Meaning , you might have to make a new account in-order to play the expansion. If you do not need to make a new account to be able to access the expansion, then Anet will probably come up with a way to replace the core game for players who have already own an existing corr game with something else.
So why not let all of us have faith in them instead of bragging and complaining about it without actually reading and thinking carefully about the outcome ? It’s very bold of those of you thinking that Anet would actually do this kind of thing to us after so many years of playing this game.
Start giving motivations ! Not criticisms!
Sorry, but I’m not paying $50-$100 based on “faith” – I want facts. None of which ANet has provided.
Until they lay out exactly what I’m getting for my money, I’m not buying HoT. When they do that, then I can decide whether I’ll pay for it.
Anything else is just gambling.
Congratulations on pre-ordering something you basically know nothing about.
I’m happy for you.
:)
It is a gamble at this point – as they have revealed so little yet.

This is getting rediculous
I mean seriously what exactly would have changed for anyone?
seriously how did this effect you exactly?
You paid $50 or whatever at HoT announce for base gw2 (because its needed to play HoT), and now have to pay another $50-$100. If you are new player buying this HoT deal it only costs $50-$100
Total – $50-$100 vs $100-$150
Unless they decided today this was the new deal, they must have known earlier – but continued to sell copies, knowing a free copy was going to be included.
Like OP said – shady.
We did get something, the lower end of the stick.
Because we bought the game in 2012.
Because we supported them for 3 years.
Because we spend additional money with gems.
Because of us, they have the chance to make an expansion.
And because of that, we pay more for less value.
Ye, being a loyal player feels good.

If I had to guess at the inner dialogue of the gnomes in Marketing, there will be a basic edition that does not have an extra character slot, and a deluxe version that — in addition to a ton of other whistles and bells to entice you to part with an extra 20 bucks — does have an extra character slot.
It’s just so perfectly one of those things that would be nice but isn’t strictly required for it be functional.

It’s great if you are a new player. But a new players $50 gets more value than a current players $50 – and that doesn’t include the issue relating to needing to buy the base game to play HoT, and selling lots of copies based on that claim over the last few months. Only at the last minute to change this, secretly edit their faq and get caught out. It just seems unnecessarily shady. They should have made that clear from day one.
The other issue is asking for all this money based on very little information – as they haven’t revealed much at all of the new content. I just want to know exactly what I’m getting.
But each to their own I suppose.

Yes.
