there is one guy who plays zerker ranger at a high tier competitive level that I know of. Its harder to do, but possible.

I think the real reason you don’t see ranger zerk builds at high level is that ranger pew pew has a stigma associated with it… as being kitten too easy.

And by some right, thats true. It is super easy to start zerker ranger and you see a lot of low level zerker rangers dominating at low tier. I think thats part of the reason you don’t see more people playing higher tier with it.

To play zerker ranger at the highest level requires an understanding of positioning and movement “off the ball” so to speak more so than any other class. Its much less about mechanics, and soooo much more about positioning and map awareness to be effective.

back then when the official hotjoin servers were 8 vs 8 it was more fun than it is now though.

then they said they wanted the players to learn how to 5 vs 5.

and thus this is what we have today.

gw2 dosen’t close when I exit the game.

Gw2.exe stays open after closing the game. I have to use task manager to delete process. It then takes a good 5-10 minutes for task manager to close the game.

If I do not do this I can not open another game.

Not a big deal, unless I get d/c’d from GW2 during pvp match….. automatic loss! Can’t take advantage of this SSD reload time * (

Taking in consideration the standards of viability in GW2, s/f fresh air is simply not viable

You will spend 3/4 of the time trying to stay alive, because all your defenses are linked to absurdly high CD skills/utilities, lack of reliable escapes, add the incapability to bypass the basic defenses of some professions in an effective and practical way.

I tried dozen of fresh air builds, none offer the same level of results displayed by other professions in the same role.

Oooookey so this is probably another typical post of a discouraged person.

Do you guys really honestly think that thief doesnt need a revamp/buff? yet i want to stress out that mostly im talking about spvp. in wvw/pve everything is quite okey. anyone who tells me that thief doesnt need a revamp is either : A – a pro pro thief that is genius and playing for 3years. B – just a regular person who thinks everything ties into “l2p” issues. C – a potato.

I’ve been playing thief as a main for like 3 to 4months. tested many many builds. s/d d/d d/p (hell even pp and pd), meta, not meta, evasive, boon ripper, condi, troll pp etc etc etc… practiced ALOT. learned all the combos and techniques. studied it like some kind of college discipline. so i rly dont think i need to l2p. (making it easier for B and C type of people. dont bother to reply.) and yet… you just get literally REKT in pvp arenas. with just faceplant style of course u get rekt. with engage / disengage style u get rekt. you get warrior down. he gets up. u get rekt. he wins a 2nd life. so you need to put enormous amount of effort to really be very useful/good to your team (cuz mostly u r just a burden to them). maybe the only thing that you are good for is waiting in stealth until ur enemy is 50%hp or less and just then you go for the kill. but even that kind of gameplay says alot of how squishy we are. well and of course not to mention rangers/warriors/turret engis that plays like with half of their brain and yet are rockin hard. why playing a fun but terribly squishy class when you can roll ranger and let your cat press #2 while you go afk? you understand the main point i guess. why does Thief/Mesmer has to suffer so much while Warr/Rang/Engi can do alot better without putting any effort? (ill repeat myself – mostly in pvp) in WvW its bit better cuz u can just stalk and B.stab for 8k-10k.

Okie enuff of negativity. now im seriously calling out some huuuuge pros to explain it to me how is this supposed to work? tried all builds. many techniques. played for 3-4months. watched tons of videos. practiced alot in 1v1s. and never achieved a point when i could say “yes now that was awesome”. always just a death in 2-3 seconds (unless u just run away with shadowstep and leave a point to your enemy). is the key in dodges? is it in engage/disengage timing? in backstab? or isit really just sit in stealth and wait til ur target is 50%? or maybe the key is in rippin the boons off? waitin for some serious answers. (though i already deleted my thief and created ranger named somethin similar to “Braindeadpeewpeww”) yet im still curious where did i go wrong that i even had to delete my Thief and roll no-brain class? ty for serious respones.

theif is the worst 1v1 class in spvp. Do not 1v1 unless its another theif or a shatter mesmer. Perhaps even ranger if hes bad.

job is to disengage once your team as the advantage at a point to either decap or help another node +1.

Thats it.
We are not a fighting class. We are a mobile class. We have one true role, that is only slightly better than what other classes can do.

s/f ele (scepter/focus)… if you really want a challenge. probably the highest damage output of any class, but … a challenge to stay alive

I am seriously starting to consider dropping this class that I’ve played since the beginning, and picking up something that doesn’t require a brain like, Ranger or something

hahaha always get a good laugh from a thief calling literally any other class brainless. It’s even better when they pick ranger because thief has every advantage in the world vs a ranger.

I have tested this too. first day on power ranger, and I’m destroying thieves who have been playing this game for years. This is in duels of course.

In Team play, thief probably soft counters 1v1. by soft counter I mean that a thief can neutralize a power ranger pretty easily in a team situations (3v3 or larger). This is because a thief, due to being highly mobile, interrupt and grief a ranger during his big bursts, then quickly mobilize back to the team fight to help and back and forth etc etc. Although, a good ranger will position himself so this doesn’t happen so easily…

been having some of the worst experiences in solo q (err ranked no group queue) then I have ever had before this week. I’m being grouped with people, who, IMO are far below my level. (not all the time… but a good amount more than 50%). Then there is the matches where I have 2+ thieves on the same team…

a good lb ranger should beat a theif 1v1 assuming equal skill.

in team comp though thief soft counters rangers….just because many times a ranger used his cd’s already on trying to burst a target they could see,.. But if a ranger sees you coming… and has his Cd’s… he will win unless you disengage… which you can easily do.

However, most LB rangers suck, so usually try to 1v1 them anyway.

Don’t get discouraged. Rangers are well equipped to beat thiefs 1v1.

In some instances though a thief does truly have the upper hand… this will be in areas where there is a lot of LOS. But overall, ranger >thief.

All those people telling you .. your bad lrn2ply are just trolls.

No magic things like focus, scepter, staff etc. Torch doesn’t feel good for someone who hides in shadows. Longbows could be another option, but we also have a shortbow, so it would be a bit redundant.

I think torch would be cool. Without light, there can not be dark. And only with light can a shadow be made….

and don’t forget, putting out the flame can make a lot of smoke. It actually would be a really good weapon for thieves from a lore standpoint.

something like: Torch skill 4: “extinguish flame” : causes aoe damage and aoe blindness.
and torch skill #5. “Molotov kittentail”: Throw your torch at your enemy causing exploding damage and burning.

Basically don’t play thief if you want to win in 1v1 situations and also be very active in the team fight.

While I agree most teams take a thief due to its ability to use mobility and quickly outrotate the opponents, thief isn’t nearly as weak as you’re portraying it.

With regards to the 1v1, its true that thief has a number of tough matchups, but a large part of that is due to the zerker amulet. You aren’t building for 1v1s as a thief (in Spvp) so why compare yourself to builds that largely are designed around that current 1v1 or 2v2 meta? Your purpose isn’t 1v1, and while top thieves can pull that off, your role is making the 1v1s into 2v1s into a dead opponent before they can react. Thieves aren’t dead meat 1v1 (you mention mesmer, thief also has an advantage imo against rangers (condi or power)).

Your claim that thieves aren’t able to contribute to a team fight is fairly laughable. You’re trying to compare apples to oranges with a comparison of thief to bruiser builds that are designed to sit in the teamfight damage and soak it up (shout war, d/d ele, to a certain extent cele engis).

A thief’s contribution to a team fight can swing the entire fight in your favor with massive swings from; taking out the opponent’s burst class (taking out enemy burst prior to teamfight or early in it can easily translate to won teamfight), every meta thief build runs trickery and BT and therefore gives the thief the ability to interrupt the opponent through stability (interrupting a key rez, stomp, banner, heal, or elite (ie lich) can either secure or swing a teamfight into your favor), AoE pressure and poison (slower rezzes + good damage -> dead rezzers or at the very least puts the opponent on the backfoot), and last but not least, shadow refuge, the versatility of this skill provides a large bit to a team fight (putting it onto your allies to secure a rez, get the jump at the start of a fight, or cover your rotations into the teamfight).

In your statement above you’re basically asking for thief to be the god of pvp. Wanting to be able to 1v1 (which is even currently possible against every build, with the closest thing to a hard counter being a medi guardian) and be active in a teamfight (idk what you mean by this, can you sit in aoe? No, but you can almost singlehandedly win fights otherwise for your team), all while still having the mobility that the thief currently has is a silly expectation.

TLDR: Learn the class, know your role, play smarter

I was explaining what the roll of a thief. You basically confirmed everything I said, except the team fight part which I’ll get to in a minute. But your responding to me like I was complaining. I am not complaining. And I’m not asking Thief to be god at anything. I am stating the role of a thief in the current meta which you have confirmed. Then went to say I should learn the class? lol. Your a clown.

And no, 1v1 is not possible vs d/d ele, cele engineers/turret engi’s, power rangers, terrormancers, medi guards, shout-bow warriors. All things equal, thief loses every time using the meta build in a true 1v1. Only if the thief is far superior in skill, or the other person makes a mistake will a thief win. If you are winning vs people of those builds, those people are bad at their class.

I never said they can’t contribute to team fights. Your misquoting me. I said they shouldn’t be in team fights. They should be off to the side, using bow dropping poison and only going in to finish opponents off when low, then getting back out. Of course use SR when needed and interrupting with steal and boon stripping, these things are a given. When I say in the fight, I mean in the meat of the fight, I suppose I should have made that clear. I guess you misunderstood me, but instead of being a gentlemen about it, you have to troll hard.

My advice, show more respect towards people. Until then, you get none from me.

yes. Power rangers do more damage than thieves. By far.

The trade off is mobility. Rangers have virtually no disengage, so they drop real fast in a 2v1.

thief can easily get away in 2v1 or 3v1 or even 4v1.

that is the trade off.

it is by far the weakest class in 1v1 and team fights. Thief only hard counters Mesmer. It can soft counter ranger and other burst in team fights only, but only as a soft counter(meaning it can’t totally neutralize, but with a little help from team can own the other burst rather quickly but needs a little push from the team)

Basically don’t play thief if you want to win in 1v1 situations and also be very active in the team fight.

Thieves arent OP these days, but backstab is still a braindead skill. You shouldn’t be able spam a high damage skill over and over until it lands.

You should have to spend a little initiative (maybe 2) for each attempt at backstab. That would force the thief to think about using it instead if mashing 1 until it lands.

I think you mean heart seeker. And thieves who spam heart seeker are terrible and playing the class very inefficiently. You should not be complaining.

Your second sentence makes me think you actually are talking about backstab. But, you can not spam backstab. Once it hits you become revealed.

Right now for me, it is Engies and Elementalists. I agree all classes can contribute.

I think most people agree its engies and elemenatists. I also like seeing a shoutbow or hambow warrior with banner.

Why do you Love / Like / Hate SPvP?

I like PVP because while you can “predict” an opponents next move, its not a true prediction, its more of a anticipation… and if you “predict” wrong you have to adjust quickly. That’s why I like it, its more like a game of chess. You know what moves the opponent can make, but if he(or a group) makes a move you didn’t expect you must adapt. It keeps you thinking and constantly keeps you on your toes..

PVE is the opposite. You know the next move for certain, or almost certain like 99% sure, in some cases 100% sure. PVE requires mass coordination(at least, you know, higher end pve) on some levels, which is challenging in its own right, and rewarding if you can get it to work, especially for guild officers and group leaders imo.

For me, I prefer the PVP aspect because of the fast twitch action and thinking that comes with the game mode , as opposed to the pve long term planning and typically(not always) larger group coordination.

Although, I do like pve, pvp is more my style.

I haven’t really wvw… so… i can’t say too much about that. I suppose it would be even more larger group coordination, but with some aspects of pvp if you find yourself skirmishing on a smaller group scale.

Burning already has high base damage nerfing might isn’t going to do kitten to IP. But I didn’t mean to target engineers with my comment simply saying if we ate going to nerf necromancers passives because they don’t have counters then there are a lot of other broken skills that you neglected to mention.

Also ever since dhuumfire necro has been repeatedly nerfed while calling them bugfixes. The only reason they are viable right now is because they counter (sort of) the two strongest classes. If that changes necros are going to need a serious buff.

Dhumfire necro is really good… but it has a high skill cap. I think its more than viable, I’ve seen people play it well, as in top tier necros, and it works… but the skill cap is very high and you have much less room for error than other classes/builds….

it truly is high risk high reward build.

Nerfing Air and fire proc would hurt S/D’s thieves more than anything IMO. We have already been nerfed enough. I don’t think s/d thief would be viable without these… i mean perhaps Air + force could be okay… but the spike burst of an S/D would be really hit and S/D thieves aren’t true burst the way d/p theif and other burst classes are.

everything else is clearly for pve and maybe wvw…

still sucking on pvp… sort of.

Thief is so poorly balanced in 1v1 and perhaps even below 3v3… however at 5v5 its balanced, but solely because of its mobility and nothing else. It is the only role we have.. which kinda sucks that we are locked into this role.

So, been playing a lot of PvP lately again and if I remember correctly a few months ago when I used to play I could not ever win against a thief in a 1 vs 1. He would either burst me down to fast I couldn’t even think or he would run away and reset then come back and finish me off. So, hambow is a soft counter to theif.

Lately, I’m getting immob and backstack for half my HP and then they just don’t do anymore damage it seems. I haven’t lost a 1 v 1 against in a thief since i have been back. They seem extremely squishy and don’t do enough damage after the initial burst. If I catch them with my hammer rotation they literally die in 3 hits with my sigil of intelligence giving me 3 crits 100%.

What happen to you guys? Just curious if I’m running into bad players or they just nerfed the class a lot.

theif can beat a hambow. It just might take some time. D/p does a better chance than s/d but its possible. Problem though with thief is that you can’t make one mistake. If thief gets cc chained … game over. I(as a thief) usually avoid the fight because its not worth the risk reward even though it is beatable and takes too much time. I need to be moving and +1ing fights.

Shoutbow warrior though, that’s completely one sided in favor of warrior.

I also love all the people who clearly don’t pvp and still give advice.

when someone responses you should always check http://www.gw2score.com/PvP/history to see if they even play pvp if you want to know whether to take them seriously or not. And none of the other people on here who have responded clearly play pvp to be taken seriously.

You do realize that there’s a whole area of the game called WvW? And that group size isn’t limited by numbers on a tidy little map?

The disconnect here and in most thief threads is that balancing tends to focus on PvP without regard to WvW. It’s different in many ways.

As to your comments about thieves in PvP, if your only options are dodging because you can’t actually kill anything, that’s a problem. It sounds to me like the thieves you’re describing could fill their role without weapons at all. Several people have already mentioned it, but you don’t seem to want to discuss anything. If you really want to talk about something, please explain to we morons how that’s a good thing. Then take some time to break down thieves in WvW. If you’re a master thief and pvp’er, I’m more than willing to listen to any advice you’ve got to offer.

Yeah I am rank 500+ in WvW mostly solo roaming on my Thief I am well aware of the issues in WvW

Guess what? There is no balance disconnect – the game is PURPOSELY balanced with PvP in mind. WvW with food, ascended, stacks, blah blah never going to be balanced. When my Necromancer can put on Dire/Perplexity/40% Condi Food do you actually think that game mode is balanced or will ever be? The answer is no. The devs barely care about WvW.

No actually a Thief NEEDS weapons – S/D provides evades and ports that ignore LOS the shortbow provides probably the best port in the game – that is called UNRIVALED mobility which is what keeps the Thief relevant in this game

Thief actually can kill people – The enemy Thief/Mesmer/Necro/Engi are primary targets for a Thief – The role of the Thief is to not waste time against a Bunker Guard/Warr/Ele in a 1v1 – instead you should be hunting the squishy classes – helping your team burst down targets in out numbered fights – and most importantly abuse your mobility to decap the enemy nodes that are left empty

What I do not like is people who have been playing the game for a few weeks/months use garbage builds in PvP and claim that the class is broken and unplayable

a mastered s/d theif is the best 1v1? lmao. no. What kind of players have you played. Thief is perhaps the worst 1v1 class overall.

also, anyone who thinks thief counters ranger… it does not. it is not a hard counter to ranger. Its a soft counter at best in team situations…. 1v1 duel power ranger team build should beat thief team build, although d/p thief is better vs ranger, its still one sided. If i can get on a power ranger for the first and dominate thieves who have been playing for a while and considered good thieves… then thief does not counter ranger.

d/p has easier time yes… blinds make it so, I agree. When I run d/p thief I beat my friend 50%. But to say thief counters ranger is not true at all.

2. and dueling would prove what exatly? That i may be better or worse player than you and your friend. I am by all means not best d/p thief out there, besides it wouldn’t change the fact that pvp in this game is team based and in team fights thieves will just feed on rangers.

dueling proves… that thief is not a hard counter to ranger. Thats what i’m trying to say. I’m not saying a thief can’t kill a ranger, or that in team fights ranger starts to lag because of how non-mobile it is(as it does)… the point i’m trying to make is that thief is not a hard counter to ranger. A soft counter in team fights maybe. but not a hard counter. A hard counter will beat its counterpart in a duel easily. Not so with thief vs ranger. that is all i’m trying to say.

d/p has easier time yes… blinds make it so, I agree. When I run d/p thief I beat my friend 50%. But to say thief counters ranger is not true at all.

good thieves are very few, even in the higher brackets. but when mastered they are a force. for example, a mastered s/d thief is the best 1v1 and nearly-immortal spec. but it’s very hard to play.

also, anyone who thinks thief counters ranger… it does not. it is not a hard counter to ranger. Its a soft counter at best in team situations…. 1v1 duel power ranger team build should beat thief team build, although d/p thief is better vs ranger, its still one sided. If i can get on a power ranger for the first and dominate thieves who have been playing for a while and considered good thieves… then thief does not counter ranger.

in team match… yes d/p has a much easier time considering that ranger probably blew a couple of his powerful bow skill already… but 1v1 match…. power ranger> thief… especially s/d but also d/p, but d/p does stand a better chance. The only reason you think this is because you probably have never dueled a decent power ranger.

I’m trying to think of a constructive way to say this but I just can’t. Sorry. This is just stupid. I frequently get kicked out to the login screen with a cute little error message when I load into maps from the lobby and it’s no big deal, I’m back in the game long before the match starts. Most of the time anyway. But I sure as hell don’t want to be punished for whatever brief server hiccup is occurring on your end.

I understand what you’re saying, but more often than not the problem is not on our end… which isn’t the same as saying its your fault.

It’s a complex problem that can’t be simplified enough to place blame anywhere with much certanty. However, if it was on our end (which has happened), everyone would D/C, not just you

Also, our servers have no way of detecting the difference between a player pulling the plug to a loss, and a legitimate connection issue.

That said, we are looking at ways of addressing this issue.

heres a solution. You have 2-3 minutes to reconnect to the game, otherwise then you get deserter debuff. I got a friend on my team who d/c’s at least once a game. He has kitten so reloading takes him less than 2 minutes to get back into the game. But its not his fault the internet in his area is poor.

on another note solid state drive = s.s.d = kitten (without periods) .. interesting how its a bad word lol

yeah… that actually a good w/l ratio. Thief can be very frustrating. You have a niche roll.. run rotate and cap points. Don’t fight 1v1 unless thief of mes. Or if your running a cheese build for duels then 1v1 but you will cripple your team.

As question. When I play turret engineer I found myself nearly invisible in lower tier arena, and when I face turret engineer on other class, I always loss.

That being said, once in a while I face an actually good players, for example a good warrior and he beat me everytime when I try to hold a point.

I take that people in upper tier knows how to counter turret engineer. Can give some pointers?

turrets are op for a reason. They sacrifice mobility. on the other two nodes it becomes a 5v4 game. rotating around it is ez mode.

theif, mes, necro, guardian are in good spots right now.

Ele/eng need some balancing, cele builds are way op.

Warrior is in a decent spot, imo slightly op, but not was bad as ele/eng

ranger is okay. Its very gimicky and lacks disengage. I would say, nerf dps but increase disengage options especially for the power builds.

Is it me or are Engis LITTLE bit too strong?

Turret engi doesn’t need nerfing….

correct. Its a one trick pony. Hold one node. Good teams rotate around this making the game 5v4 the whole time.

take the points you have in crit strikes and put into trickery, and you are running my build. Its better than standard meta imo.

Use pack or wurm runes. Why wurm? brings you back up to 17.5 k health like standard meta. Makes up for the loss of damage by adding 14% ferocity. Critical damage is now the same, standard strikes a little less.

U need trickery for tpvp, it helps the team alot. Do not underestimate a well timed daze and boon strips. It can cripple other players.

What you need to learn as a theif:

Never 1v1 unless its another thief or a mesmer.

some exceptions apply:

If you see a guardian and hes dps…. they have the upper hand but its beatable, so that fight is up to you. You can not make one mistake though.

If you see a ranger, and hes kitten , fight him. If you see a ranger and its played by a good player just turn around and run the other way.

Fresh air ele, you can beat, but again, you can not make one mistake. They can make many.

If you see a bad necro, kill him. If you see a half way decent necro, leave.

Role of a thief is too… be highly mobile. Kill mesmers. Kill runners and decap. we are at a disadvantage 1v1 except vs mesmers….. anet decided its not our job. The end.

I think mesmer, thief, guardian and warrior are actually all pretty balanced, at least in team pvp queue.

I think necro and ranger are balanced, but the way it was done is rather poor. Necro is balanced only because of passive autoprocs and ranger is balanced because of pew pew #2. Kinda crappy the way dev’s did it.

I think engineer and elemental are op right now. At least with the cele builds. Its too much offensive ability with defensive ability.

Dueling builds a different story, but every class has its cheese build. I am speaking only of pvp builds and game mode.

I would have to agree with most of what you say.

The problem though, is that changing only one of those things, would break the game even more. Every single one of these things would have to be addressed at the same time. But, yeah, there’s too much of this passive auto proc stuff.

I’ll play perfectly, then get hit out of the blue with a lighting strike autoproc for 4k or chained feared up my kitten for the second time.

not to say passive skills should be out of the game, but at this point its waayy to much.

So I was on vacation for the past week. Matchmaking now seems fine outside of the odd full team against a bunch of solo queue players, which shouldn’t happen but at least seems not very common now.

But this ladder… I honestly don’t even know where to start. How is it possible that this ladder is actually a downgrade compared to the last version? It’s so, so bad.

3 matches in a row here, with no name puggers, vs top fifty leaderboard premade or partial premade. Landslide losses for me, no fun. It seems worse than ever actually.
