Even if the spec works the way it’s advertised and it’s a condi PS for quickness… I just don’t want to play that.

Guardian is advertised as support and I’ve been waiting 2 years since the introduction of dedicated supports with HoT to play support guardian. And we are getting another flavour of DPS.

Worst of all, tomes were the perfect design opportunity for a support spec. Offensive support on F1, healing on F2, defensive support on F3. It’s all just a big waste.

I’m speaking on a PvP (WvW) perspective.

I really like playing as condi guard, but for me as well, it seems that Firebrand will add nothing or not enough for the condi builds we already have. Axe is a melee weapon with no mobility (something that guards already have a problem with) and are too slow with long cast times. If they pretend to use quickness to the spec become viable, then its a really bad design.

Also the tome skills have a long cast time, most of them seems to be melee range and a very long cooldown. The effects of the tomes doesn’t seem that powerful to justify that high cooldown of the virtues. I also believe that the cooldowns should be more closer that core guardian is now (20/30/45). The core virtues got buffed along years, but it took a very long time, before the active was near useless mainly because of that. I really hope they change it soon if ends being that bad.

According with the developers it should be a spec more oriented to condi and support. But the mantras doesn’t seem to bring much support (we have yet to see one last mantra), the axe is pure condi (won’t be used on pure support builds, and I don’t believe that will see use in healing/condi hybrids) and the tomes of resolve and courage have insane cooldowns. The closest to be viable is to loose 2 conditions on 300 range every 12 seconds (Mantra of Lore). Mantra of Solace and Mantra of Liberation are awful, Mantra of Solace heal too little considering an almost 3 second cast time and 30 sec cooldown and Mantra of Liberation will never compete with Renewed Focus that will even more be necessary to reset the cooldowns of the tomes considering how high they are. So I also can’t see the support here.

Even with the numbers giving a negative perspective, I still believe that we should wait to try it out before going on any assumptions. And if this is that bad, complain with valid points on what went wrong and hope they change/fix as soon as possible.

Other thing that really concerns me is the cast time on axe #2 – the same cast time as mace #2 – which is one of the reasons that I hate mace. This cast time might be too much to the skill be viable against players. Lets wait and see.

Well one of the GM traits reduces the CD of all tomes by 33% and then if you run virtues that would be another 15% so you can get the CD down quite a bit.

It seems that only reduce the cooldown of the tomes skills and not the virtues themselves. For that, only Virtues line.

Before complaining, let’s wait and see how the new spec is. This change might only affect Firebrand. And if this affects only Firebrand, how bad it is, considering the spec also have new ways to apply burn. Maybe the spec has higher burning potential, but the passive VoJ becomes worthless, then you’ll need a new way to play with a burn build on the spec.

Also, they might balance after the launch if it is too weak, like they did with DH, which was the weakest spec on the traits.

If it doesn’t make sense or isn’t balanced enough, then we complain about the problems. I myself don’t have high expectation, but let’s wait to see.

They at least could add 2 stacks of burning for 3 seconds to this skill, so there is a reason to use it when on a condtion build.

Also, they could reduce the cast time to compensate the higher CD, by 0.1~0.15 seconds.

Hallowed ground is pulsing 8 times as it now should after todays patch however it is still applying the 20% boon duration buff when you stand in it and isn’t giving any retaliation.

Oh buggy Anet strikes again, though they should rethink giving out retaliation and make it burn instead.

Tested it on some random person in DR, it doesn’t work. Thanks for wasting 10 seconds of my life.

What keeps me away from trying Guardian Healer again are:

Mace #2 and last hit of #1 are too slow. The mace #2 should be reduced to ~0.75s cast time and the last hit of chain of #1 should be reduced to 0.5~0.75s but reduce the damage to keep the same of the current DPS. Mace now is the worst weapon that Guardian have, it could have some small changes like the cast time.

As you pointed out, the Signet of Courage is useless – both passive and active. It really needs some changes/buffs. The active Should have 2~2.5s of cast time or allow to cast while moving. Your suggestions for the passive seems good.

I never bothered to use Battle Presence because this trait does too little (even with high healing power), ever more if compared to Indomitable Courage. It should at least be able to work even when the Virtue of Resolve is on cooldown or at least other change/buff.

Battle presence does work while virtue of resolve is on cd.
I still want the duration change ( and coeff tweaked to at least maintain current hp/s).

I just tested. the Battle Presence does not work when Virtue is on cooldown. Test by yourself. I tested both core Guard and DH, none work when the virtue is on cooldown.

02/22/17 Guardian Changes

What I don’t know is why they didn’t touch the traits. There are too many junk and usless traits. And as some people already mentioned, we are still waitng for Signets and Spirit Weapons changes. Maybe even some changes to Consacrations (Hallowed Ground is still useless).

But I’m really happy with GS changes (It can now be more on sword level) and mainly the “Receive the Light!” CD reduction, this skill may be usable now. The Core virtues changes are very good as well, will bring the core to be more on par to DH.

I don’t believe that Signet of Courage will see play, the cast time is just too high and it roots. The root part at least should be removed.

Virtue of Justice might not make it to WvW and PvE.

But the reduced cooldowns on Resolve and Courage should, and the slightly increased healing of Resolve. Those mechanics have really fallen behind compared to current balance.

100% agree. The Virtue of Justice change would be too much, especially on WvW, but the changes on Resolve and Courage should go to PvE/WvW. The main reason that I never went back to Guardian Core is how useless the virtues are.

It does work on Dragon Hunter (only the passive), but doesn’t update on the tooltip.

It is indeed bugged with Permeating Wrath. (both core and dh)

The symbol of punishment, unlike other symbols pulses the boon 4 times (base) instead of 5 like other symbols. All symbols, but the Symbol of Punishment, pulses when it is placed and one second later for the duration of the symbol. The Symbol of Punishment doesn’t pulse the boon (might) when is placed.

What I tried to say is, all symbols (exept for hammer that have 2 seconds duration as base, so pulse 3 times) pulse the boon 5 times – with 4 seconds duration, one when the symbol is placed and one for each second after untill the end of the symbol, but the Scepter symbol doesn’t apply the might when it is placed, only 1 second after untill the end of the symbol (so, only 4 times instead of 5).

I don’t know if this is an intend behavior or it is a bug.

I feel there is no difference between the new scoring and the old one, is maybe even worse.

As suggestion, what about new points for each skimish:

  • 5 for 1st;
  • 4 for 2nd;
  • 3 for 3rd.

In that way would alleviate the differences between the servers (the 1st isn’t 3 times ahead of 3rd, but almost 2 times). Maybe other values like 4, 3, 2 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd if the diference is too low?

I don’t believe so. Only newbies are complaining. They are actually really bad, too easy to avoid. Some people just don’t like to move and hurts their finger to hit the dodge key.

[Suggestions] Spirit Weapons

Hey.

I have some ideias (new ones, yes, again) to make Spirt Weapons (SW) more viable without complete redesign and keep them more unique compared to other summons.

Make all SW invulnerable to damage, but still susceptible to stuns and effect condions (chill, cripple, …). Or, if this is too much, add a significant toughness/vitality to them. But I don’t believe that would be overpowered (still needs to test). Maybe double/triple the CC and condition duration on they to balance.

Like necro Minions (I believe that is the closest to compare), the SW have ~1.5 seconds of cast time, but unlike necro minions they have a limited time and have higher cooldowns, so a lot less uptime. And thats is fine, but when it is active, the SW needs to make some diference to justify the utility slot. So making them invulnerable to damage (but not CC or other effects to have some counter) could be sufficient to make them more viable.

Also, some small changes:

Sword of Justice: Change its Command skill to it move/jump/teleport to your target before activating. It is very hard to keep track if it is in the right postion to be commanded.

Hammer of Wisdom: Change the last hit of auto to be a knockdown instead of knockback. Is really frustrating to use a melee weapon and your target keeps going away.

Bow of Truth: Change its “attack” to target foes instead of allies. Would do very little area damage (about 240 radius) and its effects (heal and remore a condition) would effect up to 5 allies in the area. In that way the burning part of the Expeditious Spirit trait would take effect on this SW, it already attack very slowly (for about every 5 seconds) and the command have a very high channel time (about 9 seconds).

Also, Reduce the Command cooldown to 15 seconds, so it can be used up to 3 times if traited (can still be used only 2 times if not traited).

These changes would make more viable and make more sense to be traited (both burning and one extra use of the command).

Shield of the Avenger: Currently its effect is too unrealiable and its not because the bubble activates several times for shot duration, but where it activates. That are 2 suggestions to fix this problem:

  • Suggestion #1: Instead of follow the Guardian, the shield would be in place and not move. The command would be AoE, make the shield to “jump” to this new place and still apply its effects (Weakness, Aegis and Damage) in the area. Reduce the command cooldown to 10 seconds. In that way you would have more control where it activates. The effect would be similar to Protective Solace (Ventari tablet) from Revenant, but you wouldn’t have control on the bubble uptime and the cooldown to move would be higher as well.
  • Sugestion #2: The shield would always be close and track the Guardian moviments to begin to follow if the Guardian moves further than ~200 range. The bubble can activate while moving (like Shield of Absorption when using as Guardian). In that way it would never be in odd spots where its effect is useless.

TLDR: Without complete redesign, make Spirit Weapons immune to any source of damage, but still susceptible to Stuns and Condition effects. Maybe double the stun/condition that they recieve to balance. Make some small changes to be more effective where they are intend to.

I don’t think that Aegis need a rework, it just needed more ways to apply (now got one more through Mace #3). But I’m unsure if is enough. Oposite to general blocks, you need know when to use to not stack they and that opens a space to skilled player use it better.

But Retaliation definitely needs a rework. This boon is useless.

What about instead of “Fire Symbols” something related to condition then?

“Exposed Stigma”: Apply bleeding (stacks: 3 / duration: 10 seconds) OR burning (stacks: 2 / duration: 5 seconds) when you apply vulnerability. Cooldown: 10 seconds.

Considering that Zeal have some condition synergy – Kindled Zeal and Expeditious Spirit (yes, spirit weapons are rather weak) – this trait would make sense. Also, would be rather easy to apply vulnerability from Symbolic Exposure (Symbols apply vulnerability to foes). Or instead of vulnerability other criteria if is too easy to trigger.

Also, would make sense to Binding Jeopardy apply cripple or chill as well, this trait really needs something else to be more interesting.

I forgot to add Retaliatory Subconscious (Major Adept on Virtues) to the list. I even forgot that this trait exists. This trait is really underwhelming and if you equip Hunter’s Determination (Gain aegis and drop a Fragments of Faith trap at your location when stunned) the Aegis from this trait is useless. I not even consider the retaliation part. Maybe reduce its cooldown to 10~15 seconds? Or add another boon/effect when stunned?

Hi.

I’m newbie in raids and only tried once, but I want to kill a raid boss to unlock the mastery line to be able to get exp on heart of maguuma once again. (Spirit Shards)

I have a nearly full berserker ascended Guardian (only miss shoulders and boots) and can go on a DPS build.

I don’t know which boss is the easiest to kill, so I’m open for any boss.

Hey guys. That last patch actually did something that were waited for very long as Quality of Life and buffs/changes that were needed, I was hoping nothing as always. I recovered the trust on the Devs to make less viable skills/traits more viable once more.

In this post I wanna to make some suggestions to buff / change weak or useless traits. One of the problem is how Retaliation is undewhelming and the traits related to it do not bring much to make this boon more viable.

ZEAL – This line is mainly for damage increase. Nearly everithing is realted to increase damage. It could have a little more utility while still being damage oriented, but less boring.

  • Wrathful Spirit [Major Adept]: Meged with Shattered Aegis [Major Grandmaster] and replaced by “Fire Symbols”.
  • “Fire Symbols” [Major Adept]: In place of Wrathful Spirit. Your symbols become fire fields instead of light.
  • Binding Jeopardy [Major Master]: Increase the duration of Vulnerability to 10 seconds from 8.
    • Reasoning: Wrathful Spirit is a very weak trait and will never be taken over Fiery Wrath or Zealous Scepter on a damage build. Even if you spam Aegis in some way (to apply Retaliation to allies as well) I don’t believe you would ever take this trait. Also, as I said, Realliation is a very weak boon. In its place, the “Fire Symbols” would maintain the damage oriented focus of Zeal (through burning / might from finishers), but would bring more utility and diversity instead of just straight DPS increase.
    • The suggestion on Binding Jeopardy is to make a little bit more interesting to take this trait.

RADIANCE – This line is mainly for critical chances and burning/condition. ANet tried to make this line as “Retaliation line” as well, but didn’t really worked out.

  • Healer’s Retribution [Major Adept]: Merged with Retribution [Major Master] and replaced by Radiant Retaliation [Major Grandmaster].
  • Radiant Retaliation [now Major Adept]: Keep the previous effect (gains damage from condition instead of power), but also pulse its damage every second on a 240 radius.
  • “Searing Flames” [Major Grandmaster]: In place of Radiant Retaliation. The old trait that was abbandoned on the trait system revamp. It removes one boon when burning a opponent, 5~7 seconds of cooldown (10 seconds was too much).
  • Perfect Inscriptions [Major Grandmaster]: Instead of ‘gaining light aura when activating a signet’, it now removes a condition when activating a signet (the effect of an old trait).
    • Reasoning: The Healer’s Retribution sugestion is for increase its usability as both Healer’s Retribution and Retribution are a bit underwhelming.
    • The Radiant Retaliation were moved to its place to open more possibilities as GM trait, that you would take Amplified Wrath even if you are not using a condition build because there are no choices (if you aren’t using a signet). With the pulse every second, Realiation would feel more like a condition some sort of the new confusion codition. It would still be hard to take this trait, considering that as condition build you don’t have many sources to get realiation on yourself, you might need to sacrifice traits / utility skills to get Retaliation.
    • The “Searing Flames” would bring a way to play while maintaining the burning/offense theme of Radiance line. Would also be more viable to take this line outside of condition builds without being stuck on “no other choice for GM than Amplified Wrath”.
    • The change on Perfect Inscriptions is to make Signets more viable and attractive. But the Signets themselves need some changes.

VALOR – This trait line is oriented for self sustain and bit of support. Even if there could have small changes, I don’t believe that have a much weaker trait like other lines.

HONOR – This line is oriented to heavy support and sustain.

  • Protector’s Impact [Major Adept]: On top of the previous effect, also activates the Symbol of Protection when the health drops below 25%, cooldown increased to 20 seconds. (or activates when drops below 50%, 30 seconds of cooldown)
    • Reasoning: Like all “on fall” traits, this trait is really underwhelming and is commonly used to troll people on WvW. Has no use on PvP and with gliding on PvE there is no reason to take, if it had a reason before. Not only that, but if you wanna to take the Honor line you are stuck with Protective Reviver if you are not using a mace, even if you don’t want to focus on support because Protector’s Impact is useless. All “on fall” traits of all classes should have an additional effect in my opinion.

VIRTUES – This line is oriented to support, utility and and Virtues improviments.

  • Unscathed Contender [Major Adept]: On top of the current effect, also adds 25% move speed if Aegis is up.
  • Battle Presence [Major Grandmaster]: This trait need and extra effect to be more viable. Maybe add 20% boon duation to Guardian as well? If the next elite specialization add a lot more effect on Virtue of Resolve passive, then it could be more viable.
    • Reasoning: The change on Unscathed Contender is for the long waited +25% move speed, this change would have realistic no impact when on combat, considering how hard is to maintain Aegis. Also a buff to this trait, even if +20% damage increase looks very good, I do not hope to keep Aegis up (is really hard).
    • Battle Presence really needs an extra effect, currently is too underwhelming. There is no reason to take it over Indomitable Courage for support. The healing is too low and even with Purity of Body (Honor – Minor GM) doesn’t do much.

Personal notes:

The Spirit Weapons need changes on the skills more than on their trait to be more viable. They can be made more viable without reworking them, I might make a post with suggestions.

I saw on other topic a suggestion to swap Zealous Scepter from Zeal with Glacial Heart on Virtues. That actually might make sense, I could take Zealouts Scepter on my burning build if this trait were on Virtues Major. And usually you want to take Zeal if you are using hammer because this is the highest symbol uptime weapon that Guardian have.

TLDR: Suggetions to make too weak/useless traits more viable.

2. Signets Buffs / changes
3. Torch 5 with a little bit less channel time (from ~4.25 to ~3.5)
4. Some type of Cripple on Mace (maybe cripple on #2, it already have an insane cast time)
5. Rework on a lot of traits (mainly retalliation related ones)

Not only the Signets, but the Spirit Weapons also have a mix of support (bow and shield) and offense (sword and hammer). Really doesn’t make sense to get Zeal line as support build just to reduce the cooldown of shield or bow spirit weapons. Yet, the spirit weapons are rather useless, they die too easy, have too much cast time (1.5s) and their effects doesn’t do much. The problem is simillar to Signets (doesn’t do much).

Also, doesn’t make much sense to the signets trait be in Radiance that is crit/cond oriented line. They also tried to make Radiance a Retalliation line, but this boon is too weak and their traits does not accomplish much or even nothing to make this boon more viable.

The real problem of Consecrations for me is just Hallowed Ground now (Santuary received the needed love). It is still very weak, there is no reason to use it over Stand your Ground and even if you need a lot of stability (using both Hallowed and SyG) is really bad to stand in a specific area to get the boon. I don’t believe that fire field and the 20% boon duration do much for the skill, they should reduce a little more the cooldown, maybe to ~45 seconds.

i gotta say this patch seems pretty good for guardians

There were so much QoL changes that we waited for ages. Now only need to buff/change Signets, Spirit Weapons, “Recieve the Light” and the useless traits.

I’m happy because they actually did something to the class instead of just ignore as always.

900 range on Scepter 1 and 2? Goodbye Scepter.

But #1 atks a little bit faster and the hits of #2 are more reliable (and now applies might as well). I believe that were more buffs than nerfs.

That sounds so vague. Protective area can be anything. Is it going to be like Sanctuary that enemies cannot pass or more like a Symbol on the ground that gives protection?

Here’s the API for it.

It appears to be an edited form of sanctuary. 180 radius instead of 120 at first glance. Different healing numbers too, compared to normal sanctuary (which could also be changed, I don’t have enough experience to tell)

That might be some type of sanctuary, because the API is showing twice the skill, one have 75 sec CD and another 60 sec CD.

I really want to know the balance changes, someone in other topic said that we’ll get a change on a passive signet to +25% move speed. I wonder if it is true and which one.

I can’t wait to see what symbols are, at least sword and scepter will have better synergy with Zeal line.

And I really hope for meaningful changes to all useless traits and the lack of synergy.

But I don’t believe that useless utilities will have changes (sigets, spirit weapons).

Sorry im new to guardians myself but wasnt the main complaint that dragonhunter out specced everything else guardian had to offer? Doesnt this help the guardians build diversity?

Yes, and it’s still going to be. I don’t consider the nerf of 1 skill to be all that dramatic actually, but you can count on the typical sensational MMO player to make it into something huge.

The problem isn’t just that. The real problem is: Where are the needed buffs? I listed a lot of things that need buffs and none of them even got touched.

You can invent all the ‘needed’ buffs you want. There isn’t any such thing actually, because obviously, after observing this game and others, what is needed and what get’s changed are rarely in alignment.

The most relevant question is “What were the changes Anet wanted to make”.

I did not invent anything. Everyone who plays the class knows these skills need changes.

And yes. That is the real problem. ANET refuses to see what is wrong.

I was going to make a few suggestions a few days before the patch to make a lot of skills and traits useless more viable (not meta, but at least viable), but I decided to wait to see the changes…

This is really unacceptable. What about Hallowed Ground? Spirit Weapons (ALL OF THEM)? Sanctuary (the CD reduction wasn’t enough)? Signets? “Receive the Light!” (that have the power level of “Wash the Pain Away!” but almost twice the Cooldown and Cast Time and is 300% harder to hit allies)? Merciful Intervention? QoL changes fo Hammer or Sword? Or what about the useless traits (half of them)?

The nerf bat were 300% stronger than the buffs… Wanna to decrease the burst potential? INCREASE THE DPS, which is awful. The LB #2 were harder than really needed. As well Test of Faith, no reason to lower even more its damage.

Engineer (Scrapper) that most needed nerfs got more meaningful buffs than nerfs. Necro is the same, the buffs really outshine the nerfs…

Guys, GIVE UP. There is no reason to even try any more.

Is necro good on high level fractals?

Hi. I’m going to make a few Viper Ascended armor to use on my Necro through 40~50 fractal levels (the enemies keep getting boons), but I wonder if Necro is vible at higher levels. If is, what stat should I use, is Viper ok? Or I should add a little vitality/toughness?

You all are pointing out things we severely need… Maybe if an ANet mod ever reads this thread they’ll share these ideas with other members of ANet

To really fix the guardian they would need to

1: Redesign or fix nearly 50% of the traits

2: Fix or completely redesign several utility skill types (signets, spirit weapons, half the consecrations.)

3: Boost the shouts (play a druid with shouts, puts guardian shouts to shame)

4: Fix/redesign numerous skills on hammer, sword, mace, & staff.

5: Make serious tweaks to the core virtues.

6: Actually admit there is a problem.

I don’t see any of these happening sadly because

1: Several of the times I have seen the lead guardian dev Karl speak about guardians he was confusing guardian skills with warrior, rev & thief skills.

2: Anet is a small company compared to many other AAA companies, when it comes down to fixing these things or fixing the constant bugs/glitches ect and making new content they will always choose the later because they don’t have the manpower to do both and the later effects their bottom line allot more because guard players can either play what does work or reroll.
