Pre-rendered disappointment

In all honesty, I understand the need to make this one pre-rendered…

There were explosions and such.

I’d imagine that the game engine isn’t really designed for explosive environments.

However, Bazaar of the Four Winds should have been rendered in-game in my mind.

To be honest, I prefer this. One of the big things the community asked for was to give a reason to send people to the other cities. OK, this is only a small step, but it will help re-populate them somewhat.

Or, as the conspiracy theorists might have you believe, it’s to get you to buy a pass to the Airship.

Because the airship has everything.

There’s no way to get out of the gated area except for WP.

Traveling from Fort Trinity to Vigil Keep will likewise result in you entering the same locked area.

Edit: To clarify. Do not talk to the gate guard in Vigil Keep unless you actually want to go to Fort Trinity.

You’ll be stuck in the area.

Upcoming patch VS Karka event patch.

Minos.5168

A year ago ArenaNet released the patch with the Karka attack on Lion’s Arch.
When the Karka’s attacked LA the game was unplayable, lagfest, crashes, skill lag…

Please, don’t let that happen again.

Q. Anyone thinks that the history repeats itself?

First off, it was over a year ago. Closer to a year and a half, actually… (November 16th, 2012)

Secondly, I think the overall amount of players has decreased dramatically since then.

(I don’t ever remember ArenaNet announcing “we’ve now sold 4 million copies!”… They’ve been clinging on to “over 3 million copies sold” as their marketing tagline for some time now.)

Thirdly, I’d hope the improvements they’ve made to decrease skill lag and such would reduce the impact of a massive zerg.

(Although, I have experienced skill lag in the recent Marionette event.)

Lastly, I fully expect there to be more enemies than the Karka invasion… (Plenty of Toxic Alliance, FLedge, Aetherblades, and Inquest…)

Perhaps part of the initial issue was with everyone targeting a single Karka?

Like that hour-long Karka finale that ended horrendously. Everyone was basically attacking one massive Karka that had incredibly high HP.

Loads of people disconnected at the end and ended up dead without any loot.

Why not Orr then? Though personally I think if Mystic Toilet would be put in every city along with Mist Portals, and Fractals, then we could have 5 hubs instead of one. I think it might be nice and give new players good image, where they enter racial capital for the first time, and see a bustling city. On the other hand it could have opposite effect of dispersing the population…

If they put everything in all the racial capitals… Then hopefully they’ll add a decent LFG feature.

The best part of Lion’s Arch was being able to find a group for Fractals and such.

Maybe they’ll put it up to another mass player vote?

Magnus and Queen Jennah have already comissioned new Asuran gates within Lion’s Arch.

I’m expecting most of the destruction to occur near the probe. Presumably the existing Asuran gates will fall…

But there’s already new ones.

As long as we clear out Scarlet’s minions, Lion’s Arch will probably stand mostly in tack. Somewhat like Kessex Hills.

I do fully expect another “donate to Lion’s Arch rebuilding” fund.

You’re not alone – I really dislike that about the LS concept to the point of quitting a couple of months ago. Giving the game another run right now to see what has changed, but it looks like same-old LS.

Same. I quit before the Taco LS and just re-started after the New Year. (Work was partially to blame for this… End of the year deadlines and such.)

In my opinion, the Living Story is actually worse now than it was in Frost & Flame.

Frost & Flame had a Title, reward skin, etc.

It impacted two whole zones.

Oh, and the FLedge seemed cooler than the Toxic Alliance.

I come back to see that the Ascended crafting is overly time-gated (and overly expensive) with requirements to do Jumping Puzzles and World Bosses.

Linsey’s whole “here’s Ascended weapon crafting” video really turned me off of the game.

She’d promised at the end of 2012 to work on a more “adventurous” way to obtain Precursors than simply RNG.

However, it’s 2014… We’ve heard nothing more about that. Just been given Ascended grind.

I don’t really have any faith that there’ll be a decent way to obtain Precursors.
The grind required will probably not be worth the TP value of the items.

Ascended Armor Grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Minos.5168

Minos.5168

The tp kinda has a different effect, it made everything too easy to obtain. In gw1 in or to buy or sell yes you had to go to town. However what were you not doing at the same time? Farming. In gw2 I can auto attack a champ while buying and selling on the tp. Many people like an item because it’s hard to get.

Well, the TP is responsible for one of the biggest gold sinks in the game… (15% of all gold in trades removed from gameplay)

It’s definitely nice that it’s convenient.

Also, the whole auto-attack thing is more about the fact that Champs can’t really deal with a huge swarm of people.

People basically break the mechanics of the game. A champ may have a OHKO, but that just downs one person (while the other 10 people nearby hit F to rally said person).

I blame that more on the whole open-world thing.

ArenaNet, for its part, has learned not to reward the zerg.
See: Drops on mobs in the Marionette and Wurm events.

Marionette mobs occasionally drop code fragments (of which you need 25 to be useful).
Champ Husks (on the way to the Wurms, not the ones at the Wurm itself) drop champ bags, but beyond that… All the other mobs are trash. No reward.

However, the lack of reward for trash mobs then decreases incentive for people to participate in failing events (in my mind).

Ascended Armor Grind

Minos.5168

Just thought I would add that I calculated it up in the Black Lion forums…

1 Light WupWup Ascended Chest Piece requires no less than 7003 materials.

That’s an absurdly high amount.

I’m sure that John Smith was primarily concerned with implementing a material sink to offset the mass generation of materials (that are then never used.)

It’ll backfire in the long run, as most people don’t seem to consider Ascended gear worthwhile to craft. Someone in LA was saying that they crafted a full set, and didn’t really notice a difference to justify their investment.
(On top of that, people that do decide to craft Ascended armor will likely just do it once… and then Transmute whatever skin they want onto that armor.)

GW1 had better material sinks, in that you had to have specific materials for each armor skin.

People are willing to grind for skins… but there’s not really many decent craftable skins.
See: Primary appeal of GW1… Horizontal progression. Grind for prestige armors.

If there were, then perhaps we wouldn’t have the overabundance of materials that we do.

The one thing I will agree on is that cloth is abnormally hard to acquire compared to other materials. Damask does not require Thermo Reagents to craft as Deldrimor Steel, Spiritwood or Elonian Leather do, but I think ANet didn’t expect prices for Silk (and Linen) to rise as high as they did. They could just wait it out; long-term demand WILL settle and prices return to a more normal level, but I think this would result in a lot of frustrated players.

I’d like to see the drop rate of cloth be increased, perhaps by increasing the number of scraps obtained from salvage or bags by 1 or 2 (effectively doubling the number of cloth entering the market). This should help depress prices and make it more accessible to more players, and because the change affects cloth at all levels, ANet wouldn’t need to adjust individual recipes and make it fairer for players that have already made Ascended armor using the old recipes.

It seems like they really didn’t take everything into account.
Damask is required for EVERY insiginia and certain armor components.
Leather is not.

It should be extremely obvious that cloth is generated at a much lower rate than all other materials. (Mining now requires no cost to the player… if they already bought a Gem store tool.)

TL;DR for prior post:
7003 crafting components for one Ascended chest piece…
That, effectively, reduces John’s lofty “136,909 items” down to possibly only 20 people crafting at one particular time-frame (of unspecified length, I might add).

I think Ascended crafting only provides a short-term crafting sink.
Long-term, people who want Ascended stats will craft a set and then move on.

Most other materials haven’t really increased in value.

You want items to increase the value for “what reason?”

You say people are not able to afford leveling crafting and ascended gear. But want items to increase in value? Isn’t that very contradictory?

I don’t necessarily want items to increase in cost.

I, honestly, think that Ascended crafting is probably only being attempted by a small percentage of the player-base.

If Ascended were more affordable, perhaps more people would craft Ascended gear (and even craft Ascended gear for more characters).

As it is presently, I see most people (out of those that even bother with Ascended crafting) crafting a set for their main… And then not bothering.

There’s hardly any decent craft-able armor skin. The only point to crafting, currently, is for stats.

For those playing the number game at home:
1 Ascended Insignia requires up to 1920 crafting components:

  • 5 Globs of Dark Matter.
  • 10 Crystalline Dust.
  • 1 Gossamer Insignia (which requires):
    • 5 Bolts of Gossamer (which requires):
      • 10 Gossamer Scraps.
    • 20 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
    • 5 Ectoplasm.
    • 5 of a “fine” crafting material (let’s assume Charged Quartz because NUMBERS):
      • 125 Quartz
  • 3 Bolts of Damask (which requires):
    • 60 Bolts of Wool (which requires):
      • 120 Wool Scraps.
    • 30 Bolts of Cotton (which requires):
      • 60 Cotton Scraps.
    • 60 Bolts of Linen (which requires):
      • 120 Linen Scraps.
    • 3 Spool of Silk Weaving Thread (which requires):
      • 3 Globs of Ectoplasm.
      • 75 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
      • 300 Bolts of Silk (which requires):
        • 900 Silk Scraps.

And that’s just 1920 destroyed crafting components for the insignia…

Let’s take a cloth chest piece:
7003 total crafting components destroyed
• All 1921 (including the Ascended insignia itself) components above
  • 1 Vision Crystal (which requires):
    • 1 Augur’s Stone (I won’t count Skill Points as a crafting component… but this requires 20 of those)
    • 5 Bloodstone Bricks (which requires):
      • 500 Piles of Bloodstone Dust.
      • 10 Obsidian Shards.
      • 50 Thermocatalytic Reagents.
    • 5 Dragonite Ingots (which requires):
      • 500 Dragonite Ore.
      • 10 Obsidian Shards.
      • 50 Thermocatalytic Reagents.
    • 5 Empyreal Stars (which requires):
      • 500 Empyreal Fragments.
      • 10 Obsidian Shards.
      • 50 Thermocatalytic Reagents.
  • 1 Damask Coat Lining:
    • 5 Crystaline Dust.
    • 60 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
    • 1 Bolt of Damask (which requires):
      • 20 Bolts of Wool (which requires):
        • 40 Wool Scraps.
      • 10 Bolts of Cotton (which requires):
        • 20 Cotton Scraps.
      • 20 Bolts of Linen (which requires):
        • 40 Linen Scraps.
      • 1 Spool of Silk Weaving Thread (which requires):
        • 1 Globs of Ectoplasm.
        • 25 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
        • 100 Bolts of Silk (which requires):
          • 300 Silk Scraps.
  • 1 Damask Coat Panel:
    • 5 Crystaline Dust.
    • 60 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
    • 4 Bolts of Damask (which requires):
      • 80 Bolts of Wool (which requires):
        • 160 Wool Scraps.
      • 40 Bolts of Cotton (which requires):
        • 80 Cotton Scraps.
      • 80 Bolts of Linen (which requires):
        • 160 Linen Scraps.
      • 4 Spool of Silk Weaving Thread (which requires):
        • 4 Globs of Ectoplasm.
        • 100 Spools of Gossamer Thread.
        • 400 Bolts of Silk (which requires):
          • 1200 Silk Scraps.
    • 1 Elonian Leather Square (which requires):
      • 20 Cured Thin Leather Squares (which requires):
        • 40 Thin Leather Sections.
      • 10 Cured Coarse Leather Squares (which requires):
        • 20 Coarse Leather Sections.
      • 20 Cured Rugged Leather Squares (which requires):
        • 40 Rugged Leather Sections.
      • 1 Spool of Thick Elonian Cord (which requires):
        • 1 Globs of Ectoplasm.
        • 10 Thermocatalytic Reagents.
        • 50 Cured Thick Leather Squares (which requires):
          • 150 Thick Leather Sections.

The grand total for ONE Ascended chest piece is 7003 crafting components destroyed.
So maybe only 19 people were actually crafting anything while John responded to this topic…

John:
That’s great that you can play the numbers game.

Now let’s play statistics.

How many of the “over 3 million players” have reached 500 in a single crafting profession on any of their characters?

My point being that aside from “cloth” materials (which are required for ALL Ascended insignias, regardless of armor type)… Most other materials haven’t really increased in value. (Granted, it may very well have kept Ore and Wood from plummeting due to an overabundance of mining and tree-chopping with Infinite Use tools.)

If one day $1 = 20 golds or so, and the price of legendaries don’t increase, I’ll buy all the legendaries for all my characters for sure xD

I’d assume that unless they reduce the drop rate of precursors (from all sources including Mystic Forge), precursors won’t really increase in price.

A lot of the cost of Legendaries, currently, are the Icy Runestones… Which are immutably set to 1g each.

And I say “a lot of the cost” because all the crafting materials and such can be mined throughout standard gameplay.

Make dyes account bound

Minos.5168

Account bound dyes make the most sense from a player perspective, but Anet is obsessed with gold. As such it is likely that threads like this are seen as something to poke fun at among their ranks. A player with 5 characters that wants Abyss dye for each of them is far more likely to pay real cash for gold to buy the gems, than a player who could just farm the gold to buy one dye for his/her whole account.

tl:dr: It’s all about the money, dyes will never be anything but soul-bound

Judging from the rest of the things they do it seems more like they design everything under the assumption that most people only play one character anyway(LS rewards, ascended crafting, dungeon access, etc.). They are probably right and even have the data to back it up. Whether that justifies a particular design decision is up for debate.

Dungeon access: Only one person in the party needs to have completed story mode to do explorable… (unless you’re talking fractals… Which is a completely different issue because of the associated gear-grind and Infusions, but the fractals were designed to be geared towards players that are into that sort of thing.)

Ascended crafting: In all honesty, it wasn’t that hard for me to get from 400 to 500 in leatherworking… And I think I should, in theory, be able to craft Medium armor for multiple characters if I want to. It’s just account-bound, not soulbound upon crafting, right?

You can also buy Damask, Elonian Leather, etc. from the TP… So time limitations are virtually non-existent. (Provided you have the coin to afford it.)

There’s no real reasoning behind leveling the SAME crafting profession on multiple characters to 500, in my mind. Why waste the materials and gold?

It’s the same in any other MMO as well… You have different crafting professions on different characters.

Also, the past two LS releases didn’t really have any “rewards”…
The first LS release (Frost & Flame) had an account-bound title, that no one seems to use anymore.

We have far too many back-item skins anyway… Do you really want to use the Anti-toxin Injector skin on every character?

It’d benefit ANet in many ways…

Either it’d decrease the amount of gold in the economy… Or people would buy gems to convert to gold for the T3 armor.

Marvelous idea.

This is about getting a flame kissed type of update available to all the existing T3 skins via the gem store .. :-P

I understand that…

But I recall that a lot of outrage with Flamekissed was that it made Human’s T3 available to anyone for just 800 gems.

People were complaining that they’d spent 120 gold and it was now much cheaper.

From my perspective, ANet could just as easily add a Mystic Forge item to the Gem Store that you combine with the T3 armor…

That way you pay like 200 gems for a single MF item (or 800 gems for a set of 6)…

Then you buy each piece of T3 armor that you want.

For ANet, this would be pure win.
T3 still costs 120g.
T3 + Flames (or Ice) would then be 120g + 800 gems.

Economic failings of Ascended crafting

in Black Lion Trading Co

Minos.5168

The key issue with crafting components in this game is that there’s not really much worthwhile to obtain with them.

In GW1, various crafting materials were required for each purchasable armor/weapon skin. Krytan armor still required Krytan materials… But Elonian armor required new materials like Elonian Leather. Stuff in Cantha required Spiritwood Planks.

I’ve seen many people complain that the Ascended skins aren’t worth it for various reasons.

Elonian Leather is worth less than the components that it consists of.
Various leather components, generally, are about the same as they were months ago (or maybe even cheaper now.)

We need cosmetic grind. It’s been established in past topics.

Adding stuff to the Gem store may serve to reduce the overall amount of gold… but does nothing to impact crafting components.

Add to it that Ascended weapons are crazy expensive for the minor stat increase.
If you ignore getting your crafting to 500 and buying all the crafting materials necessary…
You could probably almost afford a Legendary with all that you’d save.
And that Legendary, unlike Ascended, would allow you to change stats on the fly.

My guess is Abaddon. She gazed into the abyss and it looked back. Evon Gnashblade promised us to look into Abaddon’s case and I think it would have had to do with Scarlet’s story just as the Thaumanova Reactor was a project of hers. He was the god of secrets and scarlet seems to know a lot of secret stuff…

While I agree that Scarlet would have inevitably been involved in Evon Gnashblade’s fractal, I disagree that “the abyss” is Abaddon.

I mean, if we had voted for Evon, we’d have known about all of this in November…

That’d have only ruined the rest of the story (given ANet’s penchant for abrupt surprises without much exposition; see: Reveal of Scarlet Briar).

We’ve essentially not learned much in the past two updates other than “something” is causing Scarlet’s madness.

If we had known back in November that this “something” was Abaddon, the Living Story would have been that much more lackluster.

With the Human gods having essentially abandoned Tyria, I’d doubt Abaddon has much to do with any of this. (Why would they leave if Abaddon was still around?)

It seems much more likely to be a dragon. Especially due to the drawing in Scarlet’s lair. (there were no drawings of Abaddon)

Abaddon didn’t lurk under the ground. He was in the Mists.

"Downed" state for Aetherblade and FL Charr?

Problem after problem after problem. In the end do the gains outweigh the potential loss?

Regardless of whether or not PvE and WvW players will ever try the alternate game mode…

I still think “downed” for NPCs is an interesting game mechanice that should be used for all of the five primary races.

Any Asuran, Charr, Human, Norn, or Sylvari NPC should go into “downed” state with the ability to rally… And NPCs should be updated to assist any downed allies.

It just provides a more cohesive gameplay experience.

Watching NPCs get killed by mobs has always seemed weird to me… I’ve always thought NPCs should go into a downed state.

And it seems like NPCs are very rarely programmed to seek out and revive other NPCs.

We need Mounts in EOTM.

How about make Taimi be a permanent staple in EotM and let her distribute Golem Mounts to every player that enters?

Grandmaster Jeweler?

in Crafting

Minos.5168

It’s kind of silly that we haven’t yet seen a grandmaster jeweler, especially since we’ve had Ascended rings since November 2012. (And, by now, have trinkets and such too.)

How long until the Jewelers get more attention?

Infusing Backpiece Removes Skin?

in Crafting

Well, the underlying issue is probably that:

If they prevented it from being used in the recipe, then people would complain “Why can’t I infuse my backpiece?!”

And, unfortunately, there aren’t special recipe exemptions for skinned items.

"Downed" state for Aetherblade and FL Charr?

The result would be more pve players complaining even more about being forced into a game mode they don’t want anything to do with and pvp players complaining that they have pve players encroaching on their territory.

Except that ANet has stated that they would like for PvE players to feel more comfortable with WvW.

In the end, the more people that are willing to play either game mode the better… Because it improves their metrics.

“Oh, we have X number of people playing WvW on a daily basis.”

“Oh, we have X number of people going into dungeons on a daily basis.”

Forced into even more WvW that I despise

Why is it ok when WvW players are ‘forced’ to play a gameplay they don’t want for a legendary, but its a crime against humanity when PvE’ers have to a tiny bit of game play they don’t want for the SAME legendary?

Why is that it’s not okay for WvW players to be forced into PvE for Legendary, but it is okay for PvE players to be forced to PvP for the same?

PvE players say “it’s not okay for us”. WvW players say “it’s not okay for us, so it should be okay for you”. See the difference?

Can I make the same argument saying that all the PvE requirements (dungeons for instance) should be taken off the legendaries because I, as a WvW player, is forced to play a game mode I don’t like to get it?

Yes, of course you can.

I mean, I’d love to be able to turn my badges as well into all the different PvE-only gifts. Would that be ok? You can get your Gift of Battle (without the battle), and we can get our dungeon Gift’s without the dungeons. Deal?

Deal.

It’s like WvW players are all “If we have to leave WvW and do PvE for our Legendaries, then you should have to play WvW.”

In all honesty, I don’t think any PvE players care if you can earn a Legendary solely through WvW.

It’s kind of absurd, to be honest.

I completely agree that you should be able to trade-in Badges of Honor for Dungeon tokens.

I also think that Ascendeds should be vastly more accessible by this point.

It’s clear now that adding another gear tier for people to grind for didn’t keep people from leaving the game.

How To Not Fall off Cliffs

lol Not true had a dumb warrior jump down on top of the air port with me. My engi punted him.

True.

But as you stated, he was dumb, probobly a PVEer. The ones that have a human ability to read descriptions when they run a mouse cursor over their traits/skills, then get a little practice, will be less dumb and the outcome will be different.

On a side note, since so many many PVEers lack the above mentioned skill, are they human ?

What a wonderful mentality for the WvW player-base to have…

No wonder there are so many PvE players opposed to this update, and WvW in general.

It amazes me that ANet focuses on banning players for “exploits” (that may or may not be clearly exploitation)…
While they don’t really seem to do much in terms of discouraging negative/disrespectful players.

LoL is known for banning disrespectful players.

"Downed" state for Aetherblade and FL Charr?

I’m just wondering why the Aetherblade Pirates and Flame Legion Charr haven’t yet been updated to feature the downed mechanic introduced for Toxic Alliance’s Nightmare Court Sylvari.

It would have been especially appropriate given the Aetherblades are in the Mists now…

I think it’s great to help bridge the gap between PvE and WvW, as there’s a definite difference to a direct NPC kill (without a downed state) and the downed state…

Downed state has its own unique abilities and their allies still have the opportunity to help rally them.

The goal is to reduce the differences between PvE and WvW, so that PvE players feel more at home in WvW and vice-versa, right?

This is false.

If you’re tagged prior to falling, then there is still repair cost.

I’m gona call it now,
one of the major-est heros of the Battle for Lion’s Arch is gona be Canach.

We need a Sylvari for the new Destiny’s Edge… and a new name as well!

This would make sense yes and would be the most likely event, considering his new dialogue it’s pretty obvious they intend to make a hero out of him.

And, well, they overhauled his look in that last Southsun update… Making him look much cooler and bad-kitten.
