Cost comparison of precursors

You can try gw2bltc. There are also some others that work too. Generally, anything that uses wood (e.g. Colossus) are not worth crafting as their cost will be at or above the cost to purchase directly from the TP. It’s also better to purchase the mats and craft the time-gated materials rather than buy them on the TP.

Keep in mind that the sites’ “crafting” costs are only valid if all recipes have been programmed in.

Some of the precursors reported vastly lower crafting costs than reality.

Most precursors are cheaper to buy from the TP.

Also, the Legendary Inscription (used for all land precursors) is ~80g to craft (assuming you craft the Elonian Leather yourself).

So any precursor under 500g is probably better to just buy from the TP. (Considering step 2 always seems to use a lot of ore and wood.)

I think the sword was one of the few that was more expensive on the TP than to craft.

It just isn’t fun to be continously batted around by the insane amount of knockbacks, cc, and instakill damage in HoT. Spawning 5 or more elite snipers in one area? REALLY? This “expansion” was a rip off.

Clearly you never visited Orr before the “culling” of Risen.

Orr was more densely populate with Risen than the Jungle is with Mordrem…

All of their pulls, immobs, cripples were very annoying. No real OHKO, but once mobs ganged up on you (after pulling and then immobilizing you)… You were done for.

TL;DR: Continue the QQ, wait a few months and ANet will likely cede to your complaints. We’ll get patch notes like: “Following the defeat of Mordremoth, the Mordrem have decreased in power and numbers.”

HoT versus living world season 1

Minos.5168

Finally, I would love to see living world season 3 be temporary and I would hate to see another expansion (10 months of waiting for 1 month of content, if that) because a temporary event just feels more special to be part of than a permanent one. A year down the line you can look back at your historical achievements and think ‘I remember that event, it was amazing’. In fact I was doing that very thing for season 1 yesterday.

I think temporary content is hard to justify from a developmental perspective.

Why use your employees to create content that’ll only be around for a month (and then gone forever) when they could spend the same amount of time and resources developing permanent content that’ll be around whenever players want to do it?

The issue with HoT is that the story is essentially half of a LS season.

Moreover, they’re diverting resources into raids (which will inevitably only detract from LS focus, regardless of the PR spin).

I think that unless they have a consistent basis for introducing new content for the majority of players (not just the raiders), then GW2 will bleed players.

LS was a great way to keep up numbers and keep people coming back to the game.

However, LS1 wore me out. I liked that I could do LS2 at my own pace without any worries about time constraints on content.

Will HoT ever be available for gems?

Minos.5168

Due to how ANet screwed over early adopters like myself by giving the expansion essentially for free to new players, I refuse on principle to pay actual money for it. Has ANet said anything about when/if HoT will be available to buy with gems?

As others have said, I doubt it will ever appear in the Gem Store (except, possibly, whenever a new expansion comes out).

I’d say to just wait for a sale. Amazon in France had it for like 20 Euro, which is just over $21.

It’s certainly worth $21, in my opinion. I wouldn’t have paid $50 on it, though, had I known fully the meager amount of content that it added. (I naively thought that since it’d been 3 years since the game released, and 1 year since they announced working on an expansion, that there might actually be a decent amount of content included.)

Or, what the players could do is simply join all the raid LFGs until the group fills up and then leave.

Learn to taxi until megaservers are fixed.

Problem solved.

Move on to next easily player fixed problem we could wildly complain about.

Megaservers are never getting fixed. They are a tool to hide decreasing population. there is never a reason to merge populations unless they are not big enough on their own.

The real issue is that we never should have had individual servers in the first place.

ArenaNet had the “noble” idea that people would join a server and have server pride leading them to WvW to “defend their server’s honor in the Mists!”

Even before Megaservers, there were still overflow maps.

The issue was that low pop servers (and mid-level maps especially) would often have empty maps. The issue only grew as they added more maps and more content that people left early maps for.

We had the ability to select “districts” in towns from a drop-down box in GW1.
They should bring back this feature for GW2. That way everyone just tries to go to the lowest number district that isn’t open.

Granted, I suppose your point may be valid in that they don’t want people knowing exactly how many instances/districts are open. (Since that’d indicate how many people are playing the game.)

Next... To Cantha?

Can you be more specific on which Asian audience it was, as well as provide the source of your information?

I don’t have a specific source, but you can search for information on the Canthan District of Divinity’s Reach (which ended up as “the Great Collapse”, now Crown Pavillion).

IIRC, it was more about the fact that all Asian cultures were being represented by one huge stereotype. Heck, it seemed like even Elona had more cultural distinction between regions.

Cantha was primarily Chinese with other cultures being mixed in. Moreover, from my personal experience, it seems as if some Koreans take great insult at being associated with Japanese culture (due to the Japanese having invaded Korea several times). NCSoft is a Korean company… Korea has also been invaded by China…

It’s more about heritage.

It’d be like insinuating that all native peoples and cultures across the Americas were all the same. (Note: They weren’t. People with Native American heritage might be insulted to be associated with a completely different group of Native Americans. Particularly if their groups had fought.)

Why would anyone pay over $21 for a “mount” that would most likely be an inventory/bag item that you’d have to shuffle between characters?

Even if it gave a 66% speed boost (which would probably just result in zones feeling “small”)… I think I’d much rather just pay 1.4s to jump immediately to a waypoint.

People on reddit were complaining about the fact that there’s no good “farm” for soft wood (which is why soft wood was so expensive, due to the demand for Spiritwood).

Most of the trees are spread out without reliable “forests” to park characters at.

Cloth, on the other hand, has guaranteed drops from Silverwastes chests. (Granted, you’re not guaranteed which tier you get.)

The thing you gotta understand is that these metas run on a timer think of it like teq you wouldn’t show up onto a map 6mins after its started and expect to be in a good map. The same thing applies to most of the HoT maps you can’t zone into VB mid way through night and expect to be put into a map that is organized and pushing t4 .

And that’s the key issue I have with all new maps.

Teq is 15 minutes top.

Dry Top’s Sandstorm is 20 minutes.

New maps have 2 hour metas. I’d prefer to be able to drop in and play whenever I want, not watch the clock for the optimal time to hop-in (and if you miss that window, wait another 2 hours).

Current difficulty – current rewards

Noob difficulty – no access to legendary rewards extreme reduction in drop chance of all other rewards and a 80% less tokens, still can complete story and enjoy content. Mastery track doesn’t unlock.

I’d be okay with that, raids need exclusivity rewards or there is no reason to participate in the time and expenses to clear it.

Why not give the Mastery track? It’s not like it gives a huge benefit.

Moreover, I don’t see why there’s a need to limit Legendary armor to the “hardcore” version (except maybe a “shinier” skin for the hardcore).

People that want the challenge will work to complete the hardcore version.

Yes, you take away the exclusive skill based rewards. A huge driving factor in keeping the skilled players interested in actually playing, take that away and it becomes very difficult to find groups (probably impossible once everyone’s cleared it once cause now you can just farm it on lower difficulty. Completely removes the reason to participate in higher level raids.

And here’s the key issue, I think.

Raids aren’t as “fun” as they were promised to be.

I found Fractals pre-HoT to be enjoyable. Rewards were decent. I ran them daily.

Then they nerfed Fractal rewards in the hopes that people would try raids.

If raids were enjoyable, then even the 4g + possible Ascended loot + boss-specific drops should be more than enough to keep people grinding.

Casuals are the backbone sure, but that doesn’t mean 100% of content needs to be tuned to them, at some point you need to think about the veterans and what they want.

You create content for the people that are paying your bills.

See: All of the PvE related content updates, compared to WvW or PvP.

If you create content for the top 10%, then that leaves 90% of your player-base without anything new to do.

The raid is the only new content since HoT. There’s no definitive date set for LS season 3.

People started leaving GW2 in 2012 because they didn’t see a clear endgame. (Which is what led to the Ascended situation to begin with…)

I, ultimately, don’t care about raids or their rewards. (I mean, I can get the final boss’s mini from the Gem Store if I really wanted.)

Raids haven’t necessarily been an enjoyable experience for all guilds. They should be something that people can bond over, not bicker over who caused the fight to fail.

Minos.5168

Are the collections balanced (cost wise) around where the market has the precursers now? (yeah, great lets arbitrarily pick a point and just fix the prices in place forever)
(while at the same time making the mats required, and thus every other item that uses them, that much more expensive?)

Or are they built with a standard process across all pres (using different ingrediants obviously) that’s going to normalize the price range a bit? Will it crash the expensive ones or jack up the cheap ones?

I’m thinking that with John Smith’s input, they probably chose the latter. Elonian Leather is still higher than what it was before the announcement. (In fact, I’m thinking they intentionally only showed Tier 1 crafting to gauge how the market would respond.)

I think it seems likely targeted ~500g for mats (excluding whatever “lost value” there was for trading Geodes/etc. to the merchants for the various collections).

Keep in mind, material prices are likely to rise over time (especially with the addition of Legendary Armor), so this cost will go up as well.

I expect that sellable precursors will retain their existing value (especially since you pay a flat fee and don’t have to do any of the tedious collections)

normal/hard mode won’t fix the whining if the boss specific skins and armor precursor are removed from normal mode, but if they drop in both modes hard mode is pointless

I disagree with that. Ascended gear is still a decent drop.

If the “easy” mode still had a chance to drop Ascended while the “hard” mode gave Ascended AND precursors for Legendary armor… I think that’d be acceptable.

WoW gives “lesser” versions of the armor for easier versions of the raid.
The harder content rewards you with flashier armor.
No one really complains, because they expect that harder content gives better rewards.

The issue I have with all of this is that Colin had basically denied any plans to have a “raid-finder” easy version. (Granted, he’s also said other things that changed later in development.)

They beat the enrage timer in suboptimal gear after 1 day of trying by over a full minute… the boss needs more HP if anything not less.

More damage doesn’t change anything. Damage is mostly mitigated not absorbed.

Your comment of “suboptimal” gear illustrates my point entirely.

ANet claimed (obviously pre-emptively) “the Zerker meta is dead.”

The only thing “suboptimal” about their gear is that they could have had more people running Zerker (and thus higher DPS).

Perhaps the HP doesn’t need a nerf, but the boss needs something to ensure that healing & tanking are just as important as DPS.

Right, but DPS only matters if you’re struggling. (If you’re winning, you probably don’t care as much.)

At which point, someone’s going to just see that Joe’s DPS was the lowest. They’re not going to care that Joe had to keep rezzing the Zerkers and stacked might on them.

Raids: Required Ascended?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Minos.5168

This does sort of worry me. Unless ascended salvaging is amazingly profitable, these are going to be trash drops (like fractal rings) after a while.

If salvaging these things just gives us bloodstone dust and obi shards, I’d much rather see a token system for buying ascended gear, and let drops be something I can throw on the TP if I don’t need them.

Ascended loot drops will probably be in the form of boxes (like we currently have for other content rewards).

I could possibly see Ascended armor salvaging into guaranteed dark matter and 1 leather/steel/damask.

Rings salvage into a Fractal-specific “encryption” thing, which makes since as they only drop in the Fractals.

I think it’d make sense for Ascended armor salvaging to more generally help with Legendary armor crafting.

I don’t think getting rid of enrage timers is the appropriate solution.

However, it seems clear that if the intent was to disrupt the Zerker meta, the Vale Guardian hasn’t done a great job in doing so.

The group that managed to finish it has already started discussing how maybe they didn’t need so much of a focus on healing.

Meanwhile, other groups are struggling to meet the enrage timers due to lack of DPS.
Only a slight nerf to HP seems necessary (it should still be HARD to beat the enrage timer.)

TL;DR: I’d suggest buffing damage to ensure this doesn’t just become 9 Zerker, 1 tank/healer.

Raids are for HC-Players | need DPSTool

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Minos.5168

Minos.5168

I’d be alright with a dps meter, but in all games I’ve played it felt very limiting and incomplete. I wanna see AT THE VERY LEAST:
- healing done;
- damage done per second and damage done total;
- condition damage/condis applied;
- boons applied;
- ccs applied;
- damage soaked;
- number of downs;
- number of rallies;
- number of resses.
Also, I’d like to see the meter split in boss phases. Yeah, hard to implement, but- if you do something, you have to do it right, not only because it’s easy. Dps by itself doesn’t mean much and it may encourage people to be selfish kittens just as I’ve seen in other games.

The issue there is that people like the OP seem only interested in pure DPS. They don’t care if you rez/heal/buff them or cc/degen/tank the mobs.

This is why we have no DPS meter, because people would solely focus on that and ignore all other stats. (Granted, they might eventually realize that buffs/heals are beneficial, but I think they’ll probably just blame the failure on everyone else.)

Idea: Lower all healing, boost heal scaling

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Minos.5168

Minos.5168

They could make Vitality more useful on gear by halving the base HP on every profession and increasing the scaling of vitality to HP. Would that make the game more fun or interesting, or would it just be a balancing nightmare that forces players to take a bunch of Vitality to survive?

That’s absurd because the game is already balanced around the existing base HP.

I think it’d be very beneficial, however, for healing skills to actually favor healing power (it’s really kind of useless currently).

You don’t even have to reduce the base heal significantly, just buff the scaling factor.

Raids excludes players, and it's ok.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Minos.5168

Minos.5168

tl;dr – Raids are good for this game because it allows high skilled players to earn rewards worthy of their efforts, gives incentives to grow and become a better player, and gives Hardcore players content that they can enjoy.

The issue here, is that Raids take significant development time. So, basically, for each raid… We’re “giving up” other features and content. (WoW’s dev team has essentially said as much, by stating “we can do this, but it’ll cost you a raid.”)

Let’s face it: Using high-end fractals as the only current example of “challenging content,” the majority of players have determined that it’s just not for them (in terms of reward-vs-time or grind or difficulty). I’d say it’d be generous to assume that people running scale 50 Fractals probably represent only 10% of the player-base.

If we use 10% as a base-line for people that are going to be dedicated-enough to do raids, how can ANet justify building content (especially story-based content) for 10% of the player base?

That, effectively, leaves 90% of the players in the dark in terms of story and without content additions. (Assuming the Living Story “becomes” raids, which may or may not be the case… But I can’t imagine them having consistent simultaneous releases between LS episodes and raids.)

If 90% of the player-base has nothing to do… They get bored and stop playing.

WoW solved this conundrum with a “raid-finder” version of the raids that are easier, but have lower-tier rewards.

However, Colin has explicitly stated that there will “never” be a raid finder.

TL;DR: I can’t imagine ANet finding a monetary justification to develop content exclusively for a small fraction of the game’s population. (This very fact is likely why we’ve had vastly more PvE content released, than any other game type.)

Well if you actually watched the show…

10 Elonian leather at current prices is 35g.

Assuming an Inscription is needed for each “tier” and you have to craft/salvage each tier…
That’s 105g, just for the leather. (granted, leather prices could go back down, but ANet probably has added other recipes using it… Like Legendary armor.)

TL;DR: There’s no way they balanced this for the underwater legendaries. The price of those was less than 80g prior to the crafting announcement.

New finisher concern, particle effect clutter

in PvP

Posted by: Minos.5168

Minos.5168

The issue, in my opinion, is that finishers are basically an extremely colorful version of taunting.

In FPSes, it’s fairly common for people to “do things” to your corpse, mocking you.

(The only difference being that in GW2 the individual performing the finisher isn’t forced to stay around after they initiate the animation.)

Thus, I think, ANet acknowledges that a lot of people want an over-the-top way to mock the person they just finished.

And, from that perspective, it’s kind of hard to imagine them giving you the option to simply turn them off.

If you’re worried about particle effects, there’s a slider for that (but it may make other things harder to see if you turn it way down)

I am for removing the anvil… And a short cooldown after exiting(say 5 minutes)

Having an anvil allows you to bang your head into a wall infinitely until the wall cracks. If there are waypoints inside of the raid and an anvil, it will be beaten within a few hours for the first ever try. Unless anet puts in place things to stop players from grinding their way to victory, players WILL grind their way to victory

The issue here is that people would simply re-log and repair that way.

I’m assuming that ANet will want people to be able to re-join their group in the event of a legitimate disconnect… And if someone has a legitimate reason to leave, I’d think they’d want the group to be able to use LFG to find another 10th member.

I don’t necessarily think they have an issue with this, as when they made repairs free they said “having to run back to where you were is penalty enough.”

I’d imagine there may be a waypoint at the repair anvil, but probably won’t be more than that… So you’d have to make your way back to your group. (And there might be re-spawns along the way, so good luck doing it alone.)

You mean like Karma?
It’s given for participation in events… Regardless of outcome.

However, it’s not really utilized in end-game (outside of legendary crafting).
I’d like to see it utilized for more things.

We already have plenty of “tokens”… I guess we could get more map-specific ones. (Like Geodes and Bandit Crests.)

I ran Tequatl probably a 100 times… Never gotten any special loot out of the chests.

I then got fed up with the lack of rewards and stopped bothering.

Clearly, RNG as a concept is nice because it allows you to have “rare” items that people can strive for.
But when the rates of getting good loot are 1% or less, it’s really just tiring for the majority of players.

Buggy Beastmastery F2 Traits?

Well, it’s really a shame because Taunt seems like a great skill for a Beastmaster.

However, the limited range and faulty proc makes it extremely unreliable.

It seems that the [F2] traits aren’t working properly.
Is there any cooldown associated with them?

I’ve had a pet near enemies and hit F2, expecting Beastly Warden to cause taunt… But it never happened.

It happens once in a blue moon (which is probably largely because I’ll hit F2 while a pet is further from enemies and one of my pets is ranged).
The taunt is very short ranged. Does it proc as soon as F2 is hit or once the pet actually activates the skill?

Next is Wilting Strike. Maybe it’s just the horrible pet AI rarely hitting enemies, but I rarely ever see weakness get applied… Even when the attack hits.

I’d assume Go for the Eyes is similar, but I haven’t used it.

Ditch Diversity Edge.

It’s honestly a joke that to progress through the game, I have to do it with a cast of members I don’t like.

That YOU don’t like. I quite like the dynamic that a mixed-race team gives.
I’m especially curious to see how they react to Canach, since there hasn’t been a Sylvari in the group… And everyone’s just now realized that they’re minions of Mordremoth. (A dragon that killed Jory’s sister… and possibly Braham’s mother and Taimi’s mentor.)

Braham and Rox are stale, Kasmeer and Marjory are just shoehorned lesbians that constantly flaunt the fact that they are together in our face

Again YOUR opinion. I think it’ll be interesting to see how Braham and Eir’s story plays out. Rox is a gladium, which is something that could still be fleshed out some more.

Kas and Jory aren’t really “flaunting” their relationship any more than any couple in modern games.

They kissed at the end of Season 1 because, well, it was the END. (Most game finales with someone rescuing/defending a romantic interest end in kissing.)

Keep in mind, it’s not for any “agenda” as it’s just developers being allowed to express themselves. (There was also a transexual mesmer introduced with the new Lion’s Arch.) There’s plenty of games with straight couples, and you don’t see homosexuals complaining that heterosexuality is being “flaunted.”

I think it’s wonderful that ArenaNet is promoting an inclusive environment that freely welcomes all players, regardless of race, gender identity, or sexual preference.

Can we not have half our current pets be useless first before we talk about new pets?

Perhaps they’ll give pets a major look-over with HoT…

Maybe Druids will be like Wargs from Game of Thrones, in which you can “become” the pet (and, thus, need a skill bar with at least 5 “weapon” skills).

new zones, new creatures, new pets… it’s entirely possible

when they added Southsun Cove they also added a new drake pet, I believe. So there’s no reason why not.

and then they added drytop and silverwaste with no pets so there is just as much reason they might not do it either

It’d have been nice to have had a Juvenile Parasite Devourer and doesn’t seem like it’d have taken much to make it happen…

Life-stealing and/or fear?! That’d be great.

For those with GCU @BBY, purchase HoT there

after finding out the expansion is $50, Im considering just getting the expansion from Best Buy. GCU membership would drop it down to $40, which isnt bad savings.

For those who do not know: Best Buy offers a service called Gamers Club Unlucked(GCU) which discounts any new games by 20% when purchased from their site or store.

ANet should be offering physical copies of HoT before it releases, and I plan on picking it up at a discounted price. if not, best buy does also offer digital keys as well.

I’m considering doing the same…

Standard and Deluxe editions should be available from BestBuy starting June 23rd, according to the FAQ.

Ultimate is only available from ArenaNet.
(Deluxe would be $60 with GCU… Ultimate gives you $50 in Gems.)

If you don’t plan on buying any Gems (or, at least, less than $40 worth), going with GCU seems like a good strategy.
