When I visited the surveymonkey I thought we might be able to suggest some names on a few fantastical locations within Lion’s Arch.

When I visited the survey there was unfortunately no Quaggan-honoring locations on the questionnaire.

I think there should be a section of Lion’s Arch where all the Quaggans can feel appreciated and safe.

A lot of good arguements, a lot of bad arguements, but all of them spawned because lots of people read the reveal article and we’re immediately confused or unpleasantly surprised.

I myself laughed at the horrible name and the weak article trying to justify it and over hype a bizarre spec.

People could make a thread like this arguing valid/invalid points about any of the other prof names but none of them are 30 pages long. Because none of the other spec names are as unacceptably left field as the name “dragonhunter”.

Good arguments or bad arguements, we’re only having these arguements because the spec name is bad.

Explanation for Cyanide Dye set at "Purple"?

Mo Mo.1947

Assigning colors to a specific hue can be arbitrary; there’s as much ‘art’ and ‘eye of the beholder’ to it as there is science. On other hand, the choice of purple seems strange.

https://www.colorcodehex.com/005562/

  • RGB shows no red, ~33% green & ~38% blue
  • CMYK shows 100% cyan, ~13% magenta, 0% yellow, ~61% black

That suggests that blue (or even green) would be more accurate, given the limited choices available.

Nice website! As arbitrary as color categorization might be, Cyanide Dye is definitely not stimulating red cones at all, which is what anything “purple” does.

I made bug reports for this color long ago but there it remains in the “purple” category.

We can argue about why the Dragon hunter is illogical, but let’s not forget the simple truth: Many of us think the name just plain sucks.

“Dragonhunter” is a generic name with an oddly specific role implication and an oddly ambiguous connection to the specs actual role in various combat situations.

It’s also displeasing to look at. My visual word aesthetic says there should be a space between Dragon and Hunter. Or we could just rename it Hunter.

Hi,

I am trying to figure out why Cyanide Dye is labeled purple. It looks teal. It shows as very similar to “Deep Teal” dye just with better texturing.

The teal range of colors is on the green side of the blue spectrum so I don’t understand why it’s sorted as “purple”. Does it show up in the purple spectrum on some armors? Anyone have as screenshot of this? :S

Cyanide Dye isn’t any more purple than my character’s hair. They are both teal.

We could remove PvE entirely if you think freeing up servers will solve the lag. Removing an arbitrary instance that’s completely unrelated to the WvW server instances doesn’t seem like it will change things.

The name should be:

  1. Evocative/Meaningful
  2. Distinct
  3. Most Appropriate as a subset of the chosen Profession
  4. Appropriate in the game world in general
  5. Suggestive of the mechanics/skills of the specialization.
  6. Not something that makes a large number of people cringe when seeing it.

Dragonhunter failed the cringe test, the most appropriate test, and the distinct test. Druid passes all 6. Chronomancer passes all 6.

Not sure if you just pulled these guidelines out of your kitten, but I like them and think they definitely make the issues with the “dragonhunter” name clear and dissectable.

The cursor. Do something about it.

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

To be fair, a lot of this is just intrinsic issues with mouse and keyboard. Keeping your cursor in check is sort of a skill you need to pick up.

That said, new cursor choices and sizes couldn’t hurt.

Try some mouse sensitivity settings in the meantime. I found I kept much better track of my cursor when I turned them up, and setting it to your own preferences will help.

Maybe if you’ve got excellent vision or something but many of us don’t. Mouse sensitivity would only make the issue worse for many of us I think. Given that I can shake my mouse left and right and still not see the cursor sometimes in the cluster of a WvW fight. Can’t imagine how hard it would be if the mouse moved even faster.

I don’t actively pay attention to it but I think the mouse escapes into the nether when using certain camera functions and then reappears in the shadow realm when you go to try and use it for ground targetting.

Like everything else they add to the UI, they could make cursor visibility an option so those who like it as it is can still enjoy it. But there are many things they could do to change the cursor and make it more visible.

I feel like a color inverse cursor with a fairly thick outline would make a highly visible cursor. Much harder to lose a cursor that is literally the exact opposite of what it’s on top of.

Has nothing to do with attraction to me. I don’t make male characters because ANet is notoriously bad at designing them and their armor. I’ve actually tried to make male characters a few times and had to delete the character because it stood stupidly or had nothing but stupid armor choices.

Let’s look at just male humans. If you take off all their clothes they seem to have bizarre hips that give them an uncanny leg gap. It’s not pronounced, but becomes quite pronounced once you put various armors on their deformed Tyrian legs. Not to mention human characters are all essentially boring as heck.

I can make ridiculous looking male charr and ridiculous looking male norn and a serious-face male asura. Sylvari males run weird and are constantly drooping their kitten heads during character creation. HAVE SOME CONFIDENCE, PLANT! And human males have the ridiculous leg gap, again.

Binding Leftclick to the Mouse Wheel for Bags

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

If your mouse can bind it that way it’s perfectly fine. Double clicking is actually a single action. It’s just you have to double click to trigger the command traditionally.

Another thing you can do is Alt + Shift + Numlock. It turns the numpad into a mouse simulator. (It’s a Windows function) Not useful at all for actually moving the mouse, but you can use it to double click repeatedly by pressing the numpad + key.

You should look up the details online to learn the full functions, but essentially you press Alt + Shift + Numlock to activate the mouse simulator, press the numpad / key to select the left click button as your active button, and then press numpad + key to double-click with the single press of a button.

When you’re done, press Alt + Shift + Numlock to deactivate the mouse simulator.

Traits - Adept, Master, Grandmaster?

The formatting of your post made it difficult for me to know when you were talking about the old system and when the new system, but I’d say the “Adept, Master, and Grandmaster” titles mean absolutely nothing with the new system.

You get all 3 minor traits no matter what and can choose one of each group of traits. Honestly I’m wondering if they should just redesign the window so trait lines are circles or triangles instead.

I mean, with leveling up it’s possible you’ll have to wait to get all 3 slots to choose from, so I guess it means something there, but once you’re 80 the trait titles seem quite irrelevant.

If you legitimately have people harassing you, there is a report feature for that, which would probably be the best solution to the issue. People that get foul just because of something like this are likely a toxic element of the community anyway.

This is true, but I have reported them, blocked them… everything I could think of, even setting my Status mode to “Offline” just to avoid getting whispered. The thing is… I don’t really feel I should have to stealth my online status to dodge this. Okay, getting one or two people asking a week is… that’s fine. But, seems like I am getting 5 or 6 asking me a DAY and I have even pinged the Terrace scroll, told them it wasn’t available right now to buy but that I was sure it will be released in the future. And the discussion kinda went like this:

Player:
“How the **** did you get in there?!”

Me:
Terrace scroll pinged. “You need one of these, hon. You can only get them on the TP but they aren’t available right now. The game puts them up every few months or so.”

Player:
Yeah, but how the **** do you get inside?!

Me:
“Um… I just told you.”

Player:
“You’re an *******”

Forgive me, but… this has been going on for over a month now, since the first time the game went on sale for 75% off. Needless to say, I’m tired of this…

The price of convenience, lol.

Heavy Zerk Armor: Runes of Speed or Traveler?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

Oh I didn’t know, oops. Thought it stacked that way for cancelling slow.

In that case I’d go Traveler’s. The only thing I’ve ever put Rune of Speed on was a set of Nomad’s Armor I made for purely tanking damage while running through enemies. With zerker you would only get a minor benefit from the rune of speed while traveler’s will boost your power, prec, ferocity that much more and give you a cushion with the rest of the stat boosts.

[!!] Honestly though I’d get all the basic components together for your ascended armor and then wait until they release the trait update and skills overhaul. (which will come before HoT release) Once they release that it’s not clear whether Zerker will remain the best all-around armor that it currently is. [!!]

Heavy Zerk Armor: Runes of Speed or Traveler?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

Well it depends on what you’ll be playing with that armor I think, but I’ll give my opinion of both:

Speed: With rune of speed all you get is vitality, which might be helpful if you’re running zerk to give you a little more survivability. The combo berserker/valkyrie back piece option indicates that vitality synchronizes well with the vulnerable nature of zerker armor. The hard cap on movement speed is +33%. So that means swiftness will only give you 8% more from the +25% you’ll always have.

But the swiftness WOULD be good in situations where you are chilled or crippled a lot, as it’s a plus and minus game. So swiftness plus the +25% movement speed would give you a plus 58% to counteract cripple’s minus 50% or chill’s minus 66%. So Rune of Speed would be better if you expect to be hit with control conditions a lot and you won’t have much on your build or a teammates build to clear them out.

Traveler: Traveler gives you generic across the board stats which give a light compliment to any stats you are running. It will give a little boost to whatever armor stats you’re running for as well as whatever stats you get from traits. (or however else you will be able to modify stats once they remove stat gains from traits)

If you have enough condition clears either from yourself or your teammates then Traveler’s would work well. It’ll boost whatever stats you run and give you a thin pillow of stat spread for every other stat.

So make your decision based on your expected exposure to movement impeding conditions. Speed if you expect them to be a problem and Traveler if you don’t expect it to be a problem.

Ferious Winds - worst trait ever designed?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

Let’s remember that everything ever will change about the stat system with the disconnection of stats from traits. So whatever preconceived notions you have about how people run their armor stats right now are completely irrelevant to the new system and however they will choose to incorporate stat adjustment.

Also it’s worth considering that while they are trying to preserve as many of the old builds as possible, they are also opening up the possibility of new builds.

Open your mind to new possibilities instead of treating metabattle.com like a prescriptive holy text.

The name dragonhunter and the concept of a “big game hunter” does not really fit the specialization and powers you are presenting. I get it, they have a bow and traps (don’t know why you chose traps if you want this spec to be a back line fighter…), but you could at least come up with a more creative name, backstory and reason for this specialization to be so umm special.

Yeah does a big game hunter go around healing it’s allies and supporting the backline? Even the phrase “big game hunter” sounds like a title not a specialization. I’m sure the spec will function well and bring diversity to the class and the game but the name sounds like over compensating to make the class less boring.

ANet Marketing Strategy:

“Heya players! After you’ve trudged through the game leveling your guardian slower than everyone else playing the game you can turn it into a Draaagonhuntaaaah! Ooh sounds like big damage and single target control vs. big nasty bosses, yeah? Okay it’s actually a support character that spreads conditions and protects squushy allies but it might do more damage than an unspecced guardian and run a bit faster. So…yeah…BIG GAME HUNTAAAHHH! Watch this video of one killing a DINOSAUUURR! Because they are big and like dragons! DRAGONHUNTAAAAH! But yeah you can kill other things too if you want. DINOSAUUURRR!”

*Dear ANet,

You don’t have to try and make a support character seem less boring by giving it an excessive name. Some of us like support characters. I will be playing this spec with my guardian that is named after my GW1 monk because I like playing support characters.

Thanks.

An interesting thought from Reddit “This makes sense if the theory of Braham picking up Eirs longbow, being the first Dragon Hunter, following his Ranger of a mothers footsteps. In a way, it brings Rangers and Guardians closer together.”

So if that is true, then longbow + traps makes sense. And the name would be because Braham is now focused on taking out Mordremoth and the other dragons.

Is this in the final cinematic or something? Where does Braham pick up Eir’s longbow? I’ve played Season 2 all episodes and don’t recall Braham grabbing a longbow.

Are all specialization names coming from the story? Is thief specialization gonna be “Eggsnatcher”?

RNG Conspiracy Conundrum

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

They can’t reveal the exact nature of the RNG because then people would find ways to exploit it. But there ARE people many of us know who are infamous for getting frequently good drops disproportionate to the drops of the people they are playing with. I know someone who plays alongside the rest of us in WvW who pings ascended drops frequently.

So if RNG ISN’T tied to account-specific data, but certain individuals ARE still getting disproportionately better drops, then we should look at other things that can be connected to that persons gameplay that aren’t account specific that might figure into the RNG.

It could be anything. it could be some nuance of the way they time their skills or chain them or something about how they move around or the odd specifics of their armor or weapons creating the RNG input. It could even be relevant to their ping and how that effects communication between the servers and their client.

If RNGeesus favors certain people, there are a LOT of things you would have to dissect about that player and the way they play the game to figure out what is getting them better drops.

There are of course plenty of real world cities that are abbreviated, but some cities don’t get abbreviated and I think it’s generally about aesthetics when it comes down to it. LA of course can be Lion’s Arch or Los Angelos and sounds normal. DR on the other hand sounds fuddly when it hits my ears.

Also I have never heard someone say “NYC” out loud. I must not be in an are where that is ever said. Whenever I see NYC written down I read it “New York City” both in my head and aloud. Saying “NYC” actually takes more tongue and mouth effort than just saying the actual city name so I’m surprised anyone says “NYC” out loud. I can only imagine it being said in rap or something.
