Best method to switch servers?

I helped a friend do this who was new to the game just a couple weeks ago. If they haven’t invested too many hours it’s totally worth it.

And you don’t lose your gold OR any items you put in your account bank. So having a guild bank would be useful for more items but not necessary. I can verify this because my friend did the delete and server switch just a few weeks ago.

Thief Improvisation trait bug?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Mo Mo.1947

From the description I wouldn’t think just having a stolen item would increase your damage. That would be pretty OP tbh. You could basically almost always have +10% damage as long as you have something stolen in queue. I’d think holding things like shovels or elementalist weapons would count as bundles that increase damage.

And I don’t think it’s a bug that it doesn’t recharge anything you have equipped. A lot of the long cooldown skills could be abused if it guaranteed recharge on at least one type of utility you’re using. Permastealth would be soooo easy! Everything would be easy. Venom cheese. Trick imba mad hops edition. So much speedy cooldown cheese!

Think of the description of the skill. Rather than encouraging you to use only one type of utility it encourages you to use three different types. It’s “Improvisation” so the idea is you don’t know which skill will recharge so it’ll be on the fly.

But I’m in total agreement that it’s a trait that people rarely think is worth equipping. I’ve never used it myself.

Hey folks,

I’ve escalated this to the appropriate team.

Thanks!

Please don’t let them “fix” the cooldown reset issue. It’ll be thief cheese for breakfast lunch and dinner. And I just might be tempted to be one of the thieves who serves that cheese!

Make us work for our thief cheese, please!

On the wiki the notes say:

- Utility elixir skills grant 2 stacks of Might to the user; tool belt elixir skills grant 1 stack of Might to all affected allies.

There must be something else giving you that second stack of might for Elixir H because the wiki notes say the trait should only give you one for toolbelt skills.

Hmmz. I don’t play warrior too often so I can’t immediately relay an experienced solution, but a couple important troubleshooting questions:

1. What is the status of your melee assist/auto-targeting/etc. options? Which are disabled and which are enabled?

2. Do you notice this issue occurring more frequently on certain types of terrain? (e.g. flat terrain, targeting uphill, targeting downhill, etc.) And do you notice this issue occurring more frequently when you are a certain distance from your target?

I think the majority on this forum and playerbase don’t expect ArenaNet to deliver any amazing content like an expansion or a huge content update. Some guy said ArenaNet are working on “stuff”. And? Show a tiny fracture of that stuff and we might believe you. Just a little hint.

Got any proof for that majority part? Wait, you don’t, this is just one of those threads that are headed to the trash can. Maybe next time you post try posting something that
offers some CONSTRUCTIVE feedback, yours has none, just exaggeration and nonsense. Or maybe a thread that promotes further discussion, yours doesn’t because it offers no arguments or actual points for discussion.

It’s also worth noting that majority of people on this forum will always been disgruntled complainers because most people only visit the forums when they want to complain about something.

You guys want to feel respected? You want to feel like your voice is heard? Dish out!

I do. I’ve probably spent enough on gems that I could have subscribed to a subscription-based game until the day that game closes down.

I still feel like I’m not respected and ignored.

Any other advice?

QFT.

A little over a grand for me.

Yes the other advice is in the rest of that post.

Also even if you do spend gems stop acting like you’re a VIP and if ANet doesn’t heed your particular opinion than you have been “disrespected”.

Seriously “disrespected”? Who do you think you are? I mean in comparison to the thousands of other people playing this game.

ANet is trying to appeal to EVERYONE. Which is impossible. So instead they go off data and feedback that suggests what the MAJORITY wants.

If ANet continually ignores your requests then you are unfortunately in the minority.

So instead of acting like you’re the top dog an your opinion is the greatest, take a different approach. A CONSTRUCTIVE approach:

I’m not telling people they have to spend gems or they should feel bad. I’m saying that the game had a lot of content that was certainly worth the initial $60. You got a complete game for $60. Without any living story or seasonal releases, there was still tons of content ON RELEASE that gave you bang for your buck.

Compare the amount of content in GW2 to the amount of content in other games that cost $60. Assassin’s Creed games for instance. I played a lot of those games but I finished them all within the 40-ish hours of gameplay they advertised on the box.

Anyway, regardless of gem purchases, people complaining on these forums need to get some perspective. First off, they are a small majority. Most players aren’t coming on these forums to discuss things. Second, this game is made and iterated in an attempt to appeal to a wide player base. If you look at the complaints flying around on these forums, many of the demands are conflicting with eachother. The mount vs. no mount argument is particularly divided. :P

The gem discussion has been had, but people still need to stop talking all melodramatic like they’re on a soap opera.

“Oh, my stars, I’ve “lost faith” in ANet!" flips open fold-out fan and wafts furiously

“ANet has “betrayed” us!" unfriends ANet on Facebook and deletes photos of ANet from album titled ‘BFFs’.

Stop with all this faith and betrayel and belief nonsense. ANet is not a religion! And if you think it is then heed the teachings of the six human gods and optionally disavow the undeserving usurper Kormir!

Let’s review how to offer CONSTRUCTIVE feedback:

Dear OP,

Stop hanging out with the Blackgate server. Not every server is full of sexists and homophobes. And don’t even try and deny it Blackgate. I’ve been around you guys in megaserver instances.

Also blocking the word gay would be blocking the word any time it’s used, even when it’s not being used as an insult word. That is basically censoring gay people.

I understand your frustration with encountering bigotry, but blocking certain words doesn’t solve that problem. If someone is using certain words to exercise hate-speech or oppressive speech then use the report feature by right-clicking their name and report them for harassment.

EoTM vs WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

EotM is not WvW because I don’t go to WvW to level up fast. I also don’t go to WvW to get karma fast. I go to EotM for that.

Fighting in EotM also does absolutely nothing constructive. One side might get some bags, but most of the time the rewards are inconsistent. And what do you get for winning points in EotM? Hardly anything. A little stack of supply in your borderland. Hardly significant to WvW.

EotM is a bunch of overflows. WvW is a single instance on each map and it counts towards your servers weekly points.

EotM COULD be like WvW, but it’s way too useful otherwise.

If you’re in a small small server I can see how exciting it might be playing with actual other players in a WvW-like setting. But if you’re on one of the higher tier servers and you’re coming to EotM to battle and compete, just don’t.

If you’re on a high tier server and you are in EotM for any other reason other than to level, get karma, or just kitten around because you’re tired then just don’t. Get back into the actual WvW matches that count and help your server succeed.

Even during reset day there’s almost always at least one server without a queue in WvW on the tier 1 server. Get in there and help your team win.

PLEASE get back into real WvW and start winning because TC is getting boring without anyone around to beat our server. :P -playful verbal joust-

Time to refocus and clarify GW2's goals?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mo Mo.1947

Personally I have no problem with the Living Story. I understand some people like it and I also like it when it’s made to play with other people.

What I don’t understand is the removal of past content and the lack of new content for the endgame (WvW mostly, PvP and dungeons).

If I was designer/manager at Anet I would make the Ring of Fire area asap with a WvW map in the middle of it.

So you want a separate WvW going on in a different location? Or just a new map? My understanding is that EotM was made partially to give people something to do when there were high queue times in WvW, but also EotM spreads out the player base.

Wouldn’t you think adding another WvW map would spread things too thin?

Otherwise I’m all for continued improvement and iteration in WvW to make it more engaging.

I don’t know about dungeons too much, but what are the reasons they might not think releasing more dungeons would be a priority?

I don’t know the answer I’m just asking, but one thing to note is that they can see how many people are engaged in doing dungeons. Maybe they’ve never seen a high enough percentage of the player base using dungeons to think they were worth investing much time in. I’m sure you could imagine dungeon usage going down as people get bored with them, but maybe there never was a ton of usage from the start.

People’s response to the statements about “meaningful content” is a perfect example of what I’ve said in other threads if not this one.

This game is being made for MANY people with MANY interests.

I personally love the game, and if you don’t love it that’s okay, but I’m saying you need to appreciate the amount of time and effort and money it takes to complete any project.

Also you need to appreciate that ANet is trying to appease tons of people with conflicting demands.

When they make changes to the game they’re trying to make the game better. Is the new trait system awesome? Not really, but they have a thread where people can discuss what should change.

Hey if you want the game to go in a different direction, go ahead and keep voicing your opinion. But too many people here “voicing their opinion” by framing their statements as if ANet has “betrayed” them and they are so woefully distraught.

Stop being so melodramatic.

Why would ANet betray you? They want to you to keep buying gems so as a very facet of their needs as a business they’re going to be searching for a way to keep customers interested.

Want to tell them what will keep you interested? Try and do it in a rationally-voiced clear statement so it’ll be easier for the mods to dredge through these forums for feedback.

Oh I’m sorry was the creation of entirely new game maps, tons of new weapon skins and new armor, and a lore progression not enough for you?

GW2 is taking a different approach to content. They’re not releasing one yearly expansion, they’re releasing content gradually over the course of the year.

All you with your excessive complaints need to stop trying to milk that $60 you spent on the game 2 years ago. How many of you are buying gems more than once a year to support new content? The gem store is what funds new content. The up-front cost of the game just covered the cost of making the game we had on release.

If you can, please spend some gems every once in a while. You get a nice treat and you can be happy knowing you’re contributing to new content.

If you can’t afford buying gems, that’s okay but stop demanding new content. You’ve got a humongous game and had 2 years to play it for the low price of $60. Even cheaper if you got the game on one of the sales.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

My opinion is that unlocking traits seems like a fun idea. Like unlocking Elite skills in GW1.

But I don’t like the oddly specific ways you have to do it. I really don’t want to take EVERY character I make all over the game. I have specific characters for doing PvE. I think it should be more generic like instead of “complete specific jumping puzzle” or “complete specific dungeon” it can be “complete any jumping puzzle” and “complete any dungeon”.

There are lots of generic achievements that can be done in multiple areas of the game. You could say complete a certain type of event or defeat any dragon.

For lower level traits it could be something like use x combo field to damage an enemy or dodge a knockback skill.

Mid-level traits could be something like defeat a champion or take over 85% fall damage without dying.

Why does Arenanet Punish Solo Play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mo Mo.1947

For my main class I don’t feel punished at all playing solo with the exception of a few tedious storyline instances. Some of the achievements for Living Story are certainly smoother with a couple allies.

I only have trouble in solo play with classes I’m unfamiliar with. Playing a thief main I have certain tendencies when I fight and sometimes I end up exploding myself when I play other classes like I play a thief.

The game has tons of opportunity for solo play, but it also has opportunities created specifically for group play.

You can’t have everything solo. That’s called a single-player RPG. Sooner or later you’re gonna have to /wave at another human being and ask for help with something.

Gw2 Sales

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

Gems keep the game alive. The repeated reduction of the up-front cost of buying the game is evidence of that fact that the up-front cost isn’t that important to them. If you are a softcore player coming into the game then hey guess what you just got yourself a ridiculously HUGE game for $20-$30. What an efficient spender! Otherwise, the gem store keeps the game growing even bigger.

For people who want the game to keep growing, the gem store is there to fund future projects. If you can’t spend money on gems then that’s cool, but realize that people using the gem store are the ones funding all these new releases and updates. And ANet has devised a cash shop system where people CAN spend tons of money on the game without breaking the game for people who can’t or just don’t want to.

And putting a sale on gemstore items is pretty much the same as putting a sale on gems.

If you usually have to spend about $10 to unlock a costume or armor skin, and something goes on sale so you can unlock the skin AND get another fun item, you just got more stuff per gems! Congrats! Your money got you more value during the sale.

More value per $1, more stuff per gem. It’s pretty much the same thing as putting a “sale” on gems.

Now if you’re saying you might want to buy gems in smaller quanities, say perhaps being able to buy 400 gems for $5 instead of having to spend minimum $10 every time for 800, then you may or may not have a good argument there and I’d say go ahead and argue your case.

You guys want to feel respected? You want to feel like your voice is heard? Dish out!

This game takes money to run, and it’s exploding with content built with the money players have invested in the game. Not the money spent to buy the game; that money paid off ANet’s pre-dev debts. The money spent in the gem store is keeping the game alive.

Yeah, you can play free forever and that’s awesome, but if you play ALL THE TIME and you’re feeling like you have nothing to do, then maybe you DON’T have anything left to do and it’s time to play two games instead of one.

I stopped playing the game for about 6 months. When I came back I was SO behind everyone. So many fractals levels, so much ascended gear, everyone has tons of gold. There is so much in this game I’ve yet to complete I don’t know when I’m going to catch up even though I’m playing obsessively again.

If you feel like there is not enough content in the game then WOW! That means either one of two things:

1. You rushed through the game. You brought this upon yourself. Rushing through the game is a fast track to boredom and burnout. Don’t believe me? Go get on a free private Aion server that has speed-leveling enabled and see how anti-climactic and underwhelming your game experience becomes.

2. You play the game way too much to be healthy and it’s time to cool it down. Take break and do something else every once in a while.

If you’ve been playing the game since launch you probably have wads of gold and tokens in your wallet and you could feasibly enjoy this game without ever having needed to spend real money on gems. In other words, some of you have been playing this game for over 2 years for the low low price of $60. At the current life of the game that comes out to $2.25 a month. If you’ve burnt out all your time on GW2, it’s time to spend money on a new game to play while you’re waiting for new GW2 content.

This game takes MONEY and TIME to create. If you don’t feel like they’re chugging out content fast enough, first off you’ve gotta be joking me. Second, try and commit to spending a little money on gems as you are able, and encourage others to do the same.

You don’t have to spend any extra money to enjoy this game, but if you want MORE game than you already have, then SOMEBODY is gonna have to open up their wallet.

In WvW I’m mostly hearing calls for ele support. Small and large waters to keep the team alive. Mesmers also are really a support class unless you’re roaming with a small group. When I run my mesmer I run it real tanky and put portals, veils, mass invis, and one other skill on my bar so I can help my group maneuver the field.

I run my mesmer with survivability specifcally so I can sneak portals into enemy lines if the active leader wants to play that way.

If you’re going roaming solo mesmer that’s a totally different ballgame. You should just search videos on youtube and find a few WvW builds to try and get a feel for how you want to equip your mesmer.

There are certain storylines that can be difficult here and there depending on your playstyle or your class.

Adult Storytelling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mo Mo.1947

Mo Mo.1947

It’s important to understand the concept of triggers.

What to you seems to be “dark” story elements that you enjoy watching or reading about in your entertainment are actual life experiences for some people.

Some people do turn to self-harm when they are in bad situations and presenting that as a storyline element can trigger them to remember the bad experiences they’ve had in life.

Otherwise, different people find different themes more or less meaningful. It’s an MMO built to appeal to a wide audience so it can’t be too niche in any way. Like for myself, I’m aromantic so any romantic storyline is just a waste of screentime in any movie or anything. And some people like action more than others, some people people like thriller scenarios more than others.

You’ve got a little experience customization with the first storyline, and as for the rest of the game there are lots of different things you can do depending on what you enjoy.

But as for “improving” the storyline or making it more gritty, you’ve gotta keep in mind that a storyline improvement for some people may be a storyline pitfall for others depending on interests. The storyline for an MMO like this has to be generic.

If you really want in depth storyline you should get more involved with RP guilds or fanfic groups.

So that’s exactly what I did. And I came here to figure out if there’s any other reason the word might be banned other than an illegitimate urbandictionary post. I’ve yet to hear another reason so I’m not satisfied if urbandictionary garbage definitions are what they base their word bans on.

You can type in almost any random sound you can think of into urbandictionary and find some stupid definition. Did you know that 62 people agree that “dorf” means " A term used to describe a human who believes he is a fantastical dwarf. " While 100’s of other people say it means something entirely different on the same website.

There’s not even a second entry in urbandictionary for the word “gubby”. Popular words always have multiple entries that have similar definitions.

And I didn’t come here to pick a fight. I came here for insight and opinions and immediately got bombarded by someone who insisted repeatedly that the word must be valid just because it was on the internet somewhere.

I am just trying to see if anyone at all knows any other source other than the stupid urbandictionary entry that would justify making “gubby” a bad word.

Yes it does matter how many votes a definition gets Krall. How could you think 2 million people agreeing is the same as 96 people agreeing?

And you don’t seem to understand how search engines work. Top results on Google are heavily based on the popularity of the website, not the web page.

If you search any word that happens to be on urbandictionary, the urbandictionary page will be in the top results. That’s because urbandictionary is popular, not because the word is popular or widespread.

You can even search your forum handles and come up as a top result. This isn’t because you’re popular, it’s because the forums you’re using are popular.

Given this, you should note all the other top results that are completely different. All referencing to people with the name “Gubby”. Gubby is even a family name that has an English crest of you follow some of the results.

You seem to really be convinced that one urbandictionary post with barely any support counts as a legitimate definition. I still don’t understand why you think this. So you’re telling me you have heard the word gubby used with the definition given on urbandictionary before today?

I chose the name Gubby because I looked at my silly-looking Asurans face and started making up goofy words to describe it. I had never come across the word or name “Gubby” before. It was just a random word I made up.

In GW1 I had a character named Mo Mo Patty Blinks. The name has no meaning at all. I was just extremely tired from gaming all night and rambling sounds in a fake Irish accent to try and think up a name. That’s how I create names. I just start making up name-ish words while I look at my character in the creation window.

@Serena: NO ONE reported my name. The game wouldn’t let me create the character from the start. And I’m only aware of a negative connotation of the word because I was searching for some explanation for a name ban that didn’t make sense.

Do NONE of you really understand how illegitimate an urbandictionary definition with less than 100 upvotes and 62 downvotes is? Do you not see how easily any word or name could get those kinds of votes with any definition someone wanted to make up?

The one urbandictionary definition is COMPLETELY illegitimate.

And I am requesting action on a support ticket. I just came to the forums to try and figure out why this name is bad.

No please read my post edit. It is not CLEAR and it is not LOGICAL. Urbandictionary isn’t a legitimate source of information until hundreds if not thousands of people have upvoted a word and it’s upvotes far outnumber it’s downvotes.

You yourself just said you have never heard of the word before. And Gubby isn’t a popular name but there are pictures of old people with the name Gubby on the internet so it’s not a new name. It’s been around for decades just like other names.

No it’s not the highest voted definition of the word. It’s the ONLY definition on urbandictionary. And urbandictionary is at the top of the search results because urbandictionary as a website is more popular than these other websites referencing real people with the name Gubby.

Gubby is a name that has existed just like Jerry is a name that has existed. It’s just one that fewer people have heard.

All it takes to get 100 people to vote for a definition is for some highschool punks to make fun of some unpopular kid and then put up a stupid definition on urbandictionary and tell their friends about it.

So basically by banning the name Gubby ANet is possibly reinforcing internet bullying.

And Krall, urbandictionary definitions mean nothing. I could create a definition with the name Krall right now and say anything I want about it. Nothing on urbandictionary is inherently legitimate. And less than 100 upvotes, countered by 62 downvotes is hardly a convincing definition.

Hello,

Can someone shed some light on a situation for me? I was trying to create a goofy looking Asuran named Gubby Huggles and the game wouldn’t allow it saying it contained inappropriate words. I contacted support about this and their response just said I should review the naming policy. I did and nothing there explains why my name is disallowed.

I went ahead and Googled “Gubby” and found that other than one urbandictionary result, Gubby is just a REAL NAME that people have. The urbandictionary definition (of course) has a bad meaning, but only 96 fools have approved this word. And SIXTY TWO others have downvoted it. Could one UNPOPULAR urbandictionary slander definition REALLY be the reason my name isn’t allowed?

If you look at the results for the name Jerry, you’ll find that thousands of people on urbandictionary have decided that Jerry means someone with large sexual organs. Does GW2 ban the use of the name Jerry also?

How many other names have been slandered on urbandictionary? Will GW2 ban them all?

Am I missing something? I can’t find any other possible explanation for why my name would be disallowed, and this explanation I did find is a ridiculously arbitrary and a bad reason to ban my name.

How to fix WvW, a few easy steps.

in WvW

Shifting to a kill incentive point system pretty much means the bigger server wins. They could shift points around to liven up the system, but perhaps by giving more points when a capture location is upgraded. Or a slow increase in points gained for holding a point consecutively. This would encourage defense incentive, and defense can be done by smaller groups with proper siege on the walls. ACs and the like.

Blobs are weak. They take big objectives but can’t respond to multiple objectives being taken by small groups. You can’t win the week by holding SMC all the time.

If you want to fix WvW, encourage your server to not blob if you aren’t winning a lot, and to scout for blobs so your small groups can avoid the blobs of death while taking towers and camps.

The thing I think that is broken with WvW is the match-ups. I’m tired of facing the exact same servers every week. And now my server is bloody winning all the time. I don’t really expect to not win each week. Where’s the fun in assured victory? Blegh

Doing the motions and going around capping and fighting is fun, but it would be more fun if I felt less secure in victory.

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

I think the “hobo sacks” are an aesthetic that fit Engineers well if you dress your engineer with steam-punk armor. I never thought about it being bad.

That is UNTIL I saw Ender’s armor example. The backpack certainly doesn’t fit that armor.

So if every Engineer is going to have different armor and different dyes, how do you fix engineer packs in a way that it will work for every character?

How about:
A. Add pack dye channels for engineers.
B. Redesign pack models to be more attractive.
C. Have a few different pack themes: Each theme tailored to a different aesthetic. (i.e. a plant theme or a metal theme. All engineers wear medium armor so you really only need the themes to fit the spectrum of medium armor aesthetics)
D. Back items can override packs BUT engineers have a visible graphic somewhere above or near their head to make it apparent they are wielding a pack, regardless of whether or not their packs are overridden by back items. (Possibly a different glowing icon for each pack type?)
E. All of the above

Stalwart's Shoulders (skin)

I am also eager to unlock this skin. I’ve just looked through every weapon skin on the argos-soft website and this is the only one I found that worked with the look I’m trying to create.

I have the Krytan armor skin but I don’t like the shoulder piece. I’ve reskinned my shoulders 4 times trying to find the right fit but the stalwart shoulders are the only ones I like with the set.

Please bring this armor back. Or at least just the shoulders!

Can not use the same Ascended item twice.

Well I guess I missed out on this “unique” knowledge business when I took a break from the game. I just came across this same issue when buying a second ascended ring. Hopefully they respond to my support ticket.

I’m assuming there must be some other MMO where “unique” items exist and it’s known to mean you can only equip one? I don’t know why else some people would assume it was “obvious” from the word “unique”. Either that or your flavor of English usage just happens to be similar to the flavor of those who created the “Unique” tag.

I thought “unique” just meant you couldn’t find a ring with the same stats/upgrade slots anywhere else except the laurel merchants. Kind of like how there are certain unique weapon and armor skins that have to be obtained in a special way.

An example of how language has ambiguous meaning with multiple interpretations. If you don’t think language is ambiguous you don’t know anything about human languages. [/linguistics]

Seeing as how they have the “this item cannot be equipped by your profession” blurbs, I don’t see why they can’t attach a “can only equip one” blurb to these “Unique” items’ description windows.

DB Server: WvW, Dungeons, Fractals, Nonsense?

Howdy!

I’m a Dragonbrand server player looking for a guild that will work for me. My current guild is great but they never seem to do their big events at the times when I’m able to participate.
____________________________________________________
My active times during work days are generally as follows:
Mostly, 11pm-3am PDT (6am-10am UTC)
Sometimes, 10am-1pm PDT (5pm-8pm UTC)
Less Often, 5pm-9pm PDT (12am-4am UTC)

My days off are currently Sunday and Monday. During those times I have more availability but some weeks I spend my days off visiting family and friends.
____________________________________________________

I’m really interested in WvW and EotM and I have a Commander tag, but I also need to get more into Dungeons and Fractals in order to amass gold and materials to craft ascended gear and other nice things. I’m really laid back and like to do goofy things as much as productive things in game. I can get along with most anyone but really prefer a group that respects other people and isn’t doused with various phobias against people that aren’t like them.

Any friendly guilds out there?

Okay I’ll look into that and research the liquid coolers. My current PC has some degree of liquid cooling but I didn’t know there was a possibility of cracking so I’ll keep that in mind now.

Thanks for posting the build!

what is your current budget. And do you want a small foot print or a larger foot print when considering your tower. I can give you 2-3 different recommendations on CPU/MB/Case builds, but i need to know your top line cost.

Hmmz, well going off the prices of those two things you recommended, and considering some other things, could I get a long-lasting CPU/MB/Case combo for $500-$600?

If that sounds like a reasonable price range maybe that’d be best since I’ll need to consider the cost of buying the other odds and ends like power-supply/fans/SSD/etc. I’ll need to look into the costs of those.

You mentioned low-footprint vs. high-footprint. Are you talking about power usage? It’d definitely be nice if it wasn’t a power hog. With my current PC I really can’t notice an impact on my electricity bill during months I spend a lot of time with my PC turned on and gaming vs. months I am too busy with life and my PC is hardly ever turned on. It’d be nice if it stayed that way. As far as I know, newer PCs and components are becoming more power conscious so that shouldn’t be too big an issue, right?

The mobo you recommended has two PCI-e x16 slots but I was looking at other mobos and some of them had 3 or even 4 PCI-E slots. Like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128704

How necessary is that? I’m only using the one PCI-E x16 slot on my current mobo for my GPU. What other useful components would someone plug into a PCI-E x16 slot?

Anyway, one thing I would like in a mobo is pretty much as many USB slots as can possibly be shoved onto that thing. I’ve got a lot of peripherals that I use depending on what I’m doing, including some things that require a USB slot for power. It’d be cool if they could all be plugged in at once. It’s nice that it seems most USB slots are 3.0 on current mobos. The more 3.0 the better I figure since newer devices can require them.

Ideally (since you said my GTX 560 Ti is still okay) I’d like to eventually if not quite soon revert my current PC back to stock condition and just carry forward all the upgrade components I added into the new PC. I need to start teaching myself to program and be more familiar with the inner-workings of OS’s so it’d be nice to have a spare PC I can use as a trial-and-error learning lab. I’d like to have the freedom to REALLY kitten things up without being negatively affected if it stops working for a few days.

Thanks again for all this insight!!

Awesome! Lot’s of excellent help! It’s great when you point out that my current GPU and other components could be recycled. I hadn’t thought about how much my current CPU could be throttling all the rest of my hardware.

The only thing I still don’t know is about motherboards and PC cases. Are they all pretty much standardized so pretty much all mobos fit all cases?

My current case has a few issues and I don’t have the spare parts like sliders to put in extra hard drives or other things because I bought it prebuilt. And the case is old enough you can’t find the spare parts online. :S

Well the power supply is 700W. I’m thinking with what you and everyone else said I should just optimize my graphics settings in GW2 and start looking to build a new computer.

As far as a budget, I’m still trying to figure out what I need before I settle on a price. I’m generally a mid-range kind of person when it comes to buying electronics, but I want to make sure I get something that will be well upgradable without hitting a compatibility brick wall for a good amount of time.

Newegg usually has CPU/Motherboard combos for sale though I can’t currently find that search option, but I figure it’s cheaper to combo like that, no? I heard putting in a CPU is a bit tricky and since this will be the first time I’m gonna build a PC from scratch I want to avoid screwing that up.

I want to stay mid-range as much as I can on a motherboard/CPU combo, but I’m willing to pay a bit above mid-range to get longevity.

That’s why I’m just trying to figure out what the most important factors will be in finding a long-term motherboard.
