Well, there were never dogs in Guild Wars until GW2, what’s another animal.
Each profession doesn’t necessarily correlate to a specific bloodstone. The point to the bloodstones was just that no one individual could use all 4 of those specific styles of magic at once, this also toned down the scale of the magic that any one individual can use. Now things seem to have changed somewhat in GW2, and I’m beginning to think that perhaps the bloodstones are loosing their effects. I only say this because it seems that certain individuals have the power (without dragon magic) to do some pretty devastating things (see human beginner area and earth elemental)
Exactly, I’m glad you understand
Well looking at the shadow army models, it looks like Menzies controls the white mantle after their death, but this isn’t the case.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Wiki:Projects/Unanswered_questions/Game_mechanics#Models
And Nihilus, if everything that had shadow in the name was Menzies, we should really fear him. Because his army has made incursions into every portion of Tyria and beyond. :P
We have nothing to say it is Menzie’s beast except shadow in the name, and it comes from the Underworld surrounded by aatxe’s and shades, so it seems obvious to me that it is a servant of Dhuum.
Well, the political leaders were not entirely helpless, I know for a fact that there was one guild in Ascalon, called Ascalon’s Chosen, that King Adlebern was the leader of. That being said if the combined forces of the guilds had come down on him the guilds would have won. But there was some major legislation that passed before GW1. These laws, between the human kingdoms, were passed to strip the guilds of all land rights in the continent of Tyria as well as a lot of their power. This was done because the charr came down on Ascalon in force, and the other humans knew that if Ascalon fell they would be soon to follow.
I believe in the synergetic a storyline there’s mention that the teleport gun is important because its the opposite of a waypoint (transponder no receiver versus receiver no transponder) indicating something about the waypoints lets you localize around them. As far as cost, based on conversations about shipping in DR I’m assuming the Asura tax adventurers for the waypoints, and because they use them so much they get free use of the big gates which we know locals pay for
actually the locals don’t pay for it, there’s a (hilarious) conversation near one of rata sum’s portals about it. basically the gate manager says something about paying a tax, and the other asura says “but i already don’t pay anything to use it” or something to that effect.
I think the charge of using an Asura gate comes from transporting suplies. There’s a conversation in Rurikton next to the Ebonhawk gate about how the cost for shipping supplies is massive. I can only imagine that the Asura make bank out of the resources Divinity’s Reach ships them through the gate network.
So we’ll just pretend that our character just blacked out for 10 or so years after being born…..
But I guess the game story and the RP story don’t have to sync up at all, I mean if you are a nightmare courtier who is breaking into twilight arbor and killing the nightmare court founder…….
I would just like to point out that like 1/3 of the topics in this forum are people thinking that the 6 gods and the 6 dragons are related. And the point that everyone seems to come to is that they want to believe it, but they just don’t correlate as well as people would like. For instance Jormag has mind powers much like lyssa, but power over ice like Grenth, and Kralkatorrik doesn’t really fit anyone. It’s too messy to just be a straight up correlation.
Yeah, I personally like to believe that Abaddon was a huntsman. I mean it is known that Abaddon had the power of two gods at least, it is stated that he could have taken on two gods, but not the combined might of the 5, and so it makes sense that perhaps Abaddon was a god that went around and hunted godlike beings for their powers. This could, perhaps, be the reason for the way the realm of torment looked (entirely speculation). I also like to believe that Arachnia was kinda like the “fate” of tyria, much like greek mythology. This would be how Abaddon acquired all of his knowledge. But this is entirely just my mind imagining how things could have been.
Sadly though everything about these insectoid godlike beings is not canon, so it’s just a dream really.
I would like to point out that when you start the game our character is born, which means your character, itself, is born in the year 1325.
Unless they are fully submerged like Lion’s Arch.
There was a chain of command, but each god’s servants were still loyal to their specific god first, and the alliance of fallen gods second. There’s even visual in some missions about certain emissaries squabbling with Abaddon’s servants.
(edited by Narcemus.1348)
It was on a chain of islands located between Tyria and Cantha. Relatively near the center of the Unending Ocean.
Yes, but the Greater Darkness is a servant of Mallyx the Unyeilding, as is mentioned in the quest ‘Mallyx, the Unyeilding’. And Mallyx was one of the greatest servants of Abaddon.
“To defeat Mallyx the Unyielding, we must break into his Ebony Citadel. However, it will not be quite so simple as just knocking on his tower door. Mallyx the Unyielding has four great servants…the General, the Fury, the Greater Darkness, and the Dreadspawn Maw…known collectively as the overlords.”

Is there a single instance of any being using the dragon’s power that hasn’t been wholly corrupted? Vizier Khilbron, for instance, was tainted by Zhaitan’s power. Further, didn’t Zhaitan have to GRANT Khilbron that power? To claim that the gods somehow tapped the dragons power without consequence – corruption, etc. – and against the dragon’s will seems without precedent or foundation.
When was it stated that Khilbron was tainted by Zhaitan’s power?!? Everything I have ever seen in either game pointed towards his creation being a side effect of the spell he used, as well as the creation of the undead orrian army that plagued kryta in GW1. I mean even in the game it says that Zhaitan claimed the orrian army for his own upon awakening, which is something he wouldn’t need to do if he had made it in the first place.
I have always wondered personally, and I haven’t explored Cursed Shore yet (only thing missing), but I read Orrian scrolls on all the gods and how they came to Tyria, but there was no scroll on Dhuum. There was even a scroll on Abaddon coming to Tyria, but not Dhuum. This makes me wonder if Dhuum came to Tyria at all, or if perhaps Dhuum was always tied to Tyria. I mean if you think about the god of death, perhaps he is not a god persay, but rather the physical embodiment of death in Tyria.
Anyways, I think it makes sense that Lyssa, Dwayna, and Melandru don’t have any lore connecting them to their predecessors. I mean can you really see the goddess of peace and harmony killing the last god of that for their powers? And Melandru may be original from any preceding pantheons, being the oldest of all the gods. Then Lyssa, she just doesn’t seem like the type to kill her parents :P
Well, okay, I’ll give you that the Greater Darknesses were demons, but the point of fighting in the Domain of Anguish was a place where you had to fight off Abaddon’s 5 greatest champions, which would make the Greater Darkness a champion of Abaddon, being defended by the servants of Menzies.
Sidenote: the date of the appearance of the gods that I used is the first date of humans on Tyria, I know this isn’t exactly correct, but that it gives you a general idea of the differences in time.
Yes, but I would like to point 1 thing out, the last dragon awakening was believed to be around the time of the extinction of Giganticus Lupicus (I haven’t seen anything to outright say this though). Now that is 10,000 BE, the gods appeared on Tyria (for the first time that we have evidence of) in 205 BE. So for the gods to have brought the forgotten to Tyria it would have had to have been muuuuuuuch longer ago, well before the last dragon awakening.
And the fact that the gods, in this instance, brought the forgotten into the world well before ever bringing in humans points to the possibility that these gods are lords over many differing races, as opposed to solely humanity.
But that being said, I have no problems with the idea that the gods are not all permanent beings, in fact we know that a large portion of them had predecessors. Balthazar’s father, Abaddon’s unnamed predecessor, Kormir from Abaddon, and Grenth from Dhuum.
I do want to point 1 thing out. When you mention the “old gods” mentioned in the article about the forgotten I want to make something clear. In Prophecies the gods, at 1 point in time, were called the “old gods” because of the White Mantle and their promotion of the mursaat as their “Unseen gods.” After the mursaat were found out they went to calling them the “true gods” and, eventually after Kormir, the “six gods.” So the article about the forgotten in the guild wars wiki was written around the time of prophecies, and it wasn’t until later additions were made to the game that the true gods and the Six started being used instead of the old gods. I believe that this is what you are thinking.
Now the human gods actually became very friendly with the Forgotten long before coming back into the lives of humanity. They made the Forgotten the protectors of the world that they were creating (or perhaps renovating after the last dragon devastation). Then Balthazar thought, “Well heck, let’s just let the humans conquer it all,” and a few problems began. They are just known as the human gods today, because there are very few forgotten left to claim any belief in them.
You realize though, that the quote you are making is extremely flawed?
The race of serpents mentioned in this text are the Forgotten, and it is known that these creatures existed on Tyria during the time of the last awakening of the Elder Dragons. Now this isn’t to say that the gods didn’t bring them to Tyria, but if this is the case it seems that the gods tend to come to Tyria, bring races, and get the heck outta dodge before the dragons awake again. Hmm perhaps the gods are bringing the dragons meals so that they won’t attack the mists? :P
Eh, doesn’t seem quite right for Menzies. He always fought with armies, Dhuum and Abaddon were the ones who liked large demonic like creatures.
First off it has not been specifically state that the dwarfs cannot reproduce. You can making an assumption by saying “doom their race by extinction” they meant “unable to reproduce”
Wow, and people thought that I was desperate for thinking sylvari might be able to reproduce, but stone dwarves?!?
Actually it was specified many times in Guild Wars: Eye of the North that by taking part in the ritual, the dwarves were ending their race in order to get rid of the Great Destroyer (which I did for them :P) So the dwarves are done for, no resurrection. As stated by the game itself.
Especially since, from what I’ve seen characters say, once you join the Nightmare you are never free from it. It’s like joining the dark side.
I want to point out, the charr aren’t blind. They know the human gods exist, they saw the power, they felt the pain when the humans tore the land from their hands because of the backing of their gods. But the difference is that the charr don’t NEED the gods. The charr do things their way, they overcome every obstacle with their brute force and cunning. In the charr mind, humanity clinging to the gods is a sign of weakness, needing something other than yourself to achieve your goals.
Yes, couldn’t remember the name, and sadly haven’t found a good group to play it thru myself.
I think there is mention of a being having been corrupted by multiple forces, in the Crucible of Eternity. That being said, for a dragon champion (which Kuunavang would have to be) to be corrupted is something that I have seen or heard nothing of. And it could be that the creature in the CoE dungeon was merely more of a surgical construct as opposed to a layering of dragon corruption.
I have a feeling that the lore changing has nothing to do with new writers, since Ree and especially Jeff Grubb have been around for a while. No the differentiation in lore is to show that much of what we knew in GW1 was entirely from the human perspective. We are learning new things in the game because we have new viewpoints, both from the new races, and the ancient races.
It’s obvious that Balthazar is a charr, dwayna is a harpy, melandru is a version of a oakenheart, Abaddon is a creepy conglomeration of spiders/insects/human, and Dhuum, and Lyssa are decidedly human.
Now there is no evidence to prove this, but Balthazar has horns like a charr, and Dwayna has wings like a harpy :P
The Jade Wind was a corrupted form of a blessing from Dwayna. The point of the Harvest Festival, was that the Emperor would go to the temple and pray to Dwayna and she would give him a blessing to disperse between the people. When Shiro killed the Emperor he took this blessing to make himself more powerful, and when he died he released it in a corrupted form, doing roughly the exact opposite of what the power was meant for. no dragons involved.
Yeah, it is known that Vizier Khilbron wanted to destroy Arah. You see in Nightfall you meet the spirit of a friend of Khilbron who turns out to be a demon, and you learn that Khilbron was a worshiper of Abaddon. Abaddon orchestrated the whole events of prophecies in order to destroy Arah and eventually release the Titans, most likely to shepherd in Nightfall faster than normal.
It is an interesting thought though, if our characters didn’t exist. Let’s see, Ascalonians would be stuck in Ascalon, the refugees would have died in the shiverpeaks, especially after Rurik failed. Mursaat would most likely attempt to take over Ascalon as well creating two human kingdoms, and destroying the dwarves in between. They would do this to assure no other chosen would show up. Then, with no one to help him, Vizier Khilbron would become a rogue agent trying to free some poor sap chosen in order to do what he needs to be done.
Moving forwards, Shiro Tagachi would most likely take over all of Cantha through Shiro’ken and Afflicted. Master Togo was good, but he wasn’t able to do many main things without the help of our character, so he would probably die before he had a chance to save his brother, the emperor.
Now we move on to nightfall, well suffice it to say, without us to lead the Sunspears it would probably fall to someone like Dunkoro. This just sounds terrible, he would have stayed in Kourna fighing a civil war while Varesh wiped out the princes of Vabbi and freed Abaddon from the Realm of Torment.
At this point in time you have a world that’s been transformed into torment, ruled over by demons, afflicted, mursaat, and a forgotten god… Then Primordius awakens right away because there was no one really left to fight the great destroyer (especially since the dwarves all died instead of becoming stone dwarves).
So yeah, I’m pretty sure we did the best we could, with the odds terribly against us.
No one knows exactly what happens to sylvari after death. There is no evidence of Sylvari spirits anywhere.
Sadly, looking around in the Lore forum, you are bound to find spoilers.
I personally want to say it was just a slow evolution in the way mesmers did things as they continued to learn more about their profession. I haven’t seen or read anything that states that mesmers had to do this, but I personally want to say that the change happened, or started happening, around the time of Minister Reiko in the Canthan expansion Winds of Change. She was a very formidable mesmer and created very realistic illusions.
I was just playing a storyline today where I chose the way in which I would advance into Orr (land, sea, or missing party/magical artifact) and Trahearn specifically refers to Zhaitan as ‘it’. I’m pretty sure it’s just how the people like explaining it. I mean I call my car a girl every once and a while, does that make it female?
I highly doubt a connection as well. I think they are just the predators of the deep sea, and they do not enjoy the fact that there is a greater predator preying on them.
Well in some languages so are scissors or rocks, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are male, just masculine, lol.
Well, in my specific instance I was talking about both female on female and male on male, and while gay isn’t specifically male on male, it usually infers that way, thus I used homosexual to refer to both gay and lesbian.
I would assume genderless, seeing as they are described as more of a force of nature than a being.
Well, they are directly related in the sense that just like the quaggan and largos, they have been pushed up from the deep sea by the DSD.
It comes from the fact that in GW1 it was stated that Ronan found the seed of the Pale Tree in a cave with other seeds. I believe this was just dropped in as a sign of more pale tree type societies appearing in the future.
I know I’ve only played pretty much just sylvari, but from what I’ve seen homosexuality in other races is almost non-existent.
Well, I mean there are hundreds of Saltspray dragons around, which Kuunavang appears to be similar to. And it makes no sense that Saltspray dragons are dragon minions, because there is at least 1 good Saltspray dragon that answers wishes.
The avatar of Balthazar is explained to have been from a powerful artifact though, so it’s hard to say you are actually wielding the power of Balthazar.
They only ever became bear, but they also only called upon it when they were, again, in need for extra strength. I have a feeling that it was merely a lack of being able to create the other forms for the race on ArenaNet’s part, but it could be said that we only ever saw them in need of the bear form and no others. The other thought is that perhaps the Norn came to revere the forms of Wolf, Snow Leopard, and Raven more after their flight from the original homelands, thus making them see wisdom in taking the forms of these animal spirits as well.
They strangely are reminiscent of Torment Claws from Nightfall. I don’t know exactly, more than likely a amalgamation, much like the bone ships.
In Edge of Destiny, Eir transforms at least once into bear, but if I remember right her totem spirit is actually Wolf. The wolf makes sense for her, being the leader of a pack, but when she calls on the form of the bear, it is so that she can summon extra strength for whatever feat she is attempting to accomplish.
It’s hard to say where exactly things are going to go with the next expansion. I mean we have 4 elder dragons left, 3 are currently relatively inactive, while 1 (Jormag) seems to be actively spreading his influence.
From a strategic standpoint I would say it makes the most sense to take out Kralkatorrik while a majority of the pact forces are still down in Orr, but with Jormag making such a mess up north, and the possibility that the DSD will be starting to make a mess along the shorelines soon, we’ve got no clue where we will actually go.
I do want to point out that from what I’ve seen and read recently by Ree about how the sylvari approach love, sex has nothing (or very little) to do with it. They approach love as a mingling of spirits, and as such gender has nothing to do with how they decide who they love. Instead they look at the spirit of the individual and their relationship grows through good old fashioned companionship. I’m not trying to demean the whole “main character homosexual” thing, it’s just more relationship based than sex based.
