I don’t believe green mines hurt the player at all under any circumstances.
You can try to find out.
I think I was hurt by one when I hit it, but maybe Canach activated it again. Don’t exactly know.
But they WILL hurt Canach and that’s the goal of the instance.
I see. So… I have to jump over the green mines… are the green mines the one that explode? Do they explode while green?
No. When they are green they only explode by direct contact. So be careful to not have any contact when you jump over the green bombs.
I don’t see any mines in that picture (is it blocked by Canash’s model?)
Was that a poison mine? (You were using the poison mine skill).
The mine I mentioned isn’t there at that moment cause it exploded just before. That’s why I wrote “on his position is a mine when it’s not exploded”. I meant there have to be one even if you can’t see it in the picture.
No it was a bomb-mine. I think at this time I tried to use the wrong skill or just accidently pressed the button of it. The picture should only show you the position of “my” mine. And my position at the wall.
From my understanding you’re supposed to make a mine safe by using the skill with the matching picture, and make the mine blow up by using the wrong skill.
Yes.
What you’re doing is just straight out detonating it when he’s on top of it. To detonate it, do you use the right skill (with the matching icon), or do you use the wrong skill?
I you want to detonate it when Canach is at the mine, you have to use the wrong skill. But it’s easier to use the right skill to make the bomb safe and then push Canach at the bomb so that he detonates the bomb by contact.
oh and I was so excited that I beat him the first time …. I didnt even look for a chest? was there a chest, please dont say there was .
No there is no chest in Story Mode.
Like you, I thought it would be a good idea to jump over red mines. I can do that, or dodge, when the circle is small. But when the circle is very large, it’s not possible.
The green mines not the red ones. I jump over them when they are green.
But that only works when Canach doesn’t use one of his mechanics. (He can detonate all of his bombs or activate them when you just disarmed them.)
Maybe you should focus on only one bomb. Like I did. It’s a lot easier.
Here is a picture I made yesterday. At Canachs current position is a mine when it’s not detonated and that is the mine I always push him into.
On the left corner of the picture there is the entrance where you come from.
You should have got a letter. There it’s marked where you have to go.
And you can do the achievements to get the back pieces. They tell you all you have to know to make them, just mouseover them.
That might help. It’s from this thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Canach-s-Mutation-Radical-Change/firstwhich was also never explained ingame :-/
Yes. And that’s a pity!
Maybe your guild mates done it when conditions worked on Canach. But that has been removed cause it wasn’t intended to work.
I don’t know what’s your problem.
I’ve done it a few times and except for the one round with the bug I had no problems with it. It’s not easy, but the way with the green mines works. I uses the bomb-mine on the right side of the cave. I stand there at the wall of the cave and every time when Canach NOT detonates the mines himself I make it green by using the second skill on it and then push him into it or I run to jump over it so that he follows me and gets hit. After that I run back to my position at the wall.
but do you have half of your dungeon-audio missing, too? Or is it intended that only Canach is voiced, and that only after he is defeated?
Sometimes I can hear Kiel, too. But most of the time she is muted.
How does Canach fit into Flame and Frost? Is it merely because of the refugees? Or is there a deeper connection? Is Canach meant to be our nemesis that was alluded to by one of the devs? If so, in what way is he our nemesis? We’ve had very little interaction with him, so how does he become our nemesis?
Here is a quote from Scott McGough from another thread:
Canach’s look has indeed undergone a major change since The Lost Shores, and I regret that there isn’t more background available regarding how it happened, but let me address the question here: his change in appearance is almost entirely due to the hardships he’s endured since he escaped Lionguard custody. He’s a fugitive from justice, he’s had Noll’s freelance decommission teams trying to kill him, and he’s utterly alone, so it’s been a tough couple of months for the sylvari fugitive.
Being on the run, fighting for his life, and killing the killers sent after him have weathered Canach; plus, he made a concerted effort to change his look (hairstyle, etc.) so as not to be recognized and arrested by the Lionguard. It’s quite a come down from the high position and status he enjoyed as a secondborn (even if that status was never as high as he thought it should be), and his new, grimmer look is meant to reflect the psychological toll he’s had to pay as well as the physical one.
As for the flaming gauntlets, remember that Canach is a seasoned combat veteran and an experienced guerilla fighter with a fairly twisted sense of what’s right. When he heard about the Molten Alliance refugees resettling on Southsun Cove, he saw a chance to help other Consortium victims and get even with Noll. But like a good soldier, he wanted to understand the situation in which he was about to involve himself, so he made a point of seeking out one of the Molten Alliance weapons facilities and clearing it. He obtained the gauntlets from that escapade and wears them now as a symbol of his newly adopted (and so far poorly executed) role as a champion of the weak…right before he set out for Southsun Cove to settle things with Noll.
That might help. It’s from this thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Canach-s-Mutation-Radical-Change/first
Or you can make them green and push Canach into them. It’s easier than waiting for the right moment to detonate them.
Yeah, I did that, I even immobilized him on the mine. Did nothing to him.
Then he bugs. Go out and try again. I had this bug, too, in one round. But when it’s not buggy, he WILL get damage from the green mines when he detonates them by contact.
All I did was make the mines green (only the explosive one does any significant damage), then walked over and past them … Canach would follow and when he stepped on the green mine, it would automatically explode … what’s this about manually detonating the mine? Did they change the mechanics?
No it’s only another way. Kiel tells you that you can detonate the mines when you use the wrong skill on them. But the other way with the green mines is easier.
I agree. I would like it when the old boat-trips would be back ingame. So that we have three points to arrive at Southsun.
And make the icon be on top of the mine even without using Scan.
Oh wait, that would be reasonable, and Anet doesn’t do reasonable.
Oh that would be reasonable? And what would be the use of the skill “Scan” if the icon would be on top of the mines even without using the skill? Don’t you think that’s highly illogical?
Apart from this… you can make the mines green and then jump over them so that Canach runs straight into them when he runs to you. But it’s risky. Or you can make them green and push Canach into them. It’s easier than waiting for the right moment to detonate them.
I meant the story itself and the writing of it is great. But I agree with you that it would be good to have the story-information ingame, too.
Well this is the problem! It’s a ground targeted skill and it’s never explicitly SAID anywhere that the skills are ground targeted!
Ehm. You do see the red circle around the numbers of the skills, don’t you? That’s the sign that these skills are ground target-skills. How long do you play that you don’t know that? That’s no mistake of ArenaNet, just your own fault.
But the storytelling we had was very good. I really like the text about Canach from the blog. Would love to get more like this about Canach and what hes gone through the last six months.
Wow. Thanks for that!
Great read! Thank you for posting this. I hope that A.net puts it in game as a library of some sort or as a story book format that they had in later years of GW1.
This and the stories on the forums should be in game. Maybe at the Priory?
That would be a great idea! In another thread I mentioned that it would be great to have collectible books in the character-tab like it is in RIFT. There you can collect books and add them to a book-tab where you can read them as often as you want to.
And thank you.^^
Braham and Rox, even though there was not a lot of lore to it, had much more character than Kiel, Canach and Noll together.
I disagree. I think Canach has much more character than Rox or Braham.
once you know the blogposts or before it?
Canach is my favourite NPC since I first met him in the Lost Shore-event in november.
She probably still wouldn’t know it was Canach, but she could surmise it was a plant-based toxin and probably of Sylvari origin.
It is not of sylvari origin. I think the toxin is from the new plant species which Canach researched in november (and whose research caused the trouble with the karka on the first hand).
The Fervid Censor description would not have mentioned Canach speficially, it would have just said “This device was used to spread toxins around the island”.
I’m really happy that his name is on the backpiece. So when the story ends I have something which reminds me of my favourite NPC and has his name on it.
EDIT:
Now, there’s another post that has a bunch of the emails that were associated with the Lost Shores event.
Thank you for reading my summary. ^^
Initial dialog with Inspector Kiel on Day 1 of Southsun.
“Well we’re back here, hopefully it won’t be as chaotic as last time!”
Player response: “Why, what happened last time?”And voila… a perfect introduction into relating most of what was conveyed by emails in the prior event. If you already knew what happened in detail, then you don’t have to read it, or you can skim it. If you didn’t, well this is a great time to find out a lot of backstory information in the game.
I agree with you. That would be a good way to bring back the old story.

Braham and Rox, even though there was not a lot of lore to it, had much more character than Kiel, Canach and Noll together.
I disagree. I think Canach has much more character than Rox or Braham.
Asking for a precursor would be a bit over the top. Personally I was hoping for a Sclerite Weapon Claim Ticket for everyone who participated as an actual reward instead of ‘a bag of money’.
I was hoping for a Mini-Canach. But still there is none.
@ Niyo
If it’s a movie you want to see , I highly doubt you’ll be an hour late and if one were, one would wait for the next screening- why? so you don’t fall into that exact position you’re describing.
The movie was your example. I for myself want to see the “movie” which is GW2 and so I am here since beta and know the old story-events.
For those claiming it’s absolutely necessary to go read a wiki to pick up on story elements that came before, have you NEVER read a book that had a synopsis at the beginning? Seriously, it’s not that rare. There are ways to explain the story thus far in ways that are in the same media (book, movie, game, etc).
Problem is: You can’t bring a “synopsis” on every part of the living story, cause it’s an ongoing story. And since there are on every day people who just started with playing GW2 it’s hard to find points on which you can make a summary. And a summary after every week (as an example) would be too much. So it’s better to read it in the Wiki, cause GW2 has a great Wiki where you can get almost every information you want. I really miss something like that in other games.
No one should have to search online or read up on the internet to understand, the game should be able to give you clear view of what is going on, that’s like going to a movie and not really understanding anything that is going on, then someone tells you to follow it up on the internet..
The problem here is: When you go to watch a movie from which you missed the first hour cause you were late, you have to ask someone for a summary or read a summary on the internet.
Yes I got the event letters, but I didn’t really read it. :S
But they are part of the story which helps to better understand the characters. Like Canachs “Sworn Statement”.
I get that some people might have given up and never tried again thus never completed the story. But this is the internet, people who truly wanted to follow the story could search it up. There are detailed accounts of what happens in the Lost Shore online.
The GW2-Wiki helps there a lot.
And for those interested in the old letters of the Lost Shore-event I just started a new thread were I collected them:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Lost-Shore-Old-Letters-from-the-Story
I hope the work I just had with this will worth it and somebody will read it…
I just started a thread were I collected all the past letters from the previous karka-event in november. Maybe this (and reading of the GW2-Wiki) will help to understand the story.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Lost-Shore-Old-Letters-from-the-Story
I rescreened my old letters from the Lost Shore-event back in november and collected them in one picture so that those who are interested in how the story began can read them.
For further information about the exact dialogues with Canach etc. I recommend to read the GW2-Wiki-articles. As for Canach I know that his entire dialogue in Garrenhoff is there. Worth reading.
Its also important to note this story builds upon the Lost shores. Canach and Subdirector Noll were main characters in the Lost Shores. They already had a history and this kinda builds upon it.
Maybe you had a different experience than the majority, but 90% of the Lost Shores content was broken and uncompleteable.
The event had bugs but they were fixed. I still have every letter I got from the time (I think it is every letter). And the story there was interesting in my opinion.
He is pretty dumb, getting killed by his own mines.
I hope you don’t compare an engine-mechanic with the story. It has nothing to do with the story that we had to throw him in his mines. It’s only a bad mechanic to come to the point where the story goes on.
And btw. we don’t “kill” him. We only catch him. And that’s the story part: We find him in his cave and catch him (or Kiel catches him -.-).
I found out that it seems to be a kind of cotton, or the gaelic word for cotton. Don’t know exactly.
that is really interesting although I’m pretty sure that there are no cotton fields in my hometown haha ;-)
I don’t think that the name has anything to do with your hometown. It’s just a coincidence.
You know you’ve given me an idea seeing that list. Perhaps Canach (who I respect and like) is part of the new destiny’s edge. We already have Braham and Rox – norn and Char. Now we have a sylvari – Canach.
He just needs to tone down his rebellious ways. It could happen
As I said before that would be really cool. Canach is not the black or white guy… he is interesting because he is good in some ways but has plans which have an evil nature cause they can harm innocent.
Only problem is that the last patch was so disappointing. But that’s not a problem of the story but engine.
I really like the story so far.
It started in november with the Lost Shore. There we first met Canach and Noll and I really like it that they are back now cause Canach is an interesting character. You only have to search for the story-parts and speak with the NPCs.
What I don’t like is how Canach was treated by Kiel so in the end she can be the hero. -.-
ANet really needs to rethink the whole concept and hire some new writers.
They don’t need to hire new writers!
I really like Scott McGough and his texts about Canach. The problem with the last patch is that there is not enough of his great texts and that the “dungeon” itself is so disappointing. But these are engine-problems not story-problems.
Most of the sylvari names are from gaelic names for boys or girls or gaelic plant names. When I searched for a name for my new sylvari I also looked up where Canach could come from. (Cause I’m interested in Canach alot.^^)
I found out that it seems to be a kind of cotton, or the gaelic word for cotton. Don’t know exactly.
I have a list of possible sylvari names for my characters and I can’t tell you how many times I have to cancel one from this list cause Anet used it for an important NPC. *g* I really liked "Cadeyrn" and "Dagonet". But they are sylvari firstborn. So as I’m a role player they are no options anymore.^^
I wait for the day, when there will be an important sylvari in game who has the name of my main-RP-sylvari "Cadfaél". *g* Could happen. Don’t know if this would be a time to laugh or cry. *g*
As for Canach, I like how the name reminds me of the Karnak-temple in egypt. ^^
There is a thread about this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/SoS-Affiliation-Achievements-not-working
I don’t think that the intentions of ONE NPC will make up for everything we have been doing and letting happen to the settlers lately. Also, after what she said to Canach, I’m pretty sure that she just knows that he is right and wants to be the hero herself. Beautiful. She gets to capture Canach AND help the settlers? Huzza, the heroism has been doubled! So convenient.
I hate Kiel… -.-
Besides which… didn’t we defeat the Molten Alliance? Why can’t the refugees just go back home and rebuild?
Because they are bound by contracts. That’s what Canach wanted to change.
the karka-queen was delayed
It wasn’t. It was announced for the 5th of June. Was a mistake in the first patch notes that it was written as ingame now.
- Reward is now what? once a day instead of per character. Great for people who couldn’t get on due to work etc… So disgusted I logged out! No reason to stay ingame.
[…]
- STOP Screwing with the rewards and THINK before you implement them. (Can this be run by people making characters over and over?, Can this be cheezed by various skills? etc..)
It was intended to be a reward which you can only do once per account. That it was not in the beginning was a bug. Now they fixed this bug.
I’m disappointed, too. I looked forward to this patch and I had so much hoped that we’ll get an instance like the ones of Rox and Braham in which we can meet Canach again. But this is... too short... and after his dialogue Kiel sends him away.
I waited months to finally see Canach again and than that. Makes me feel so sad, although I like the dialogue-scene and what Canach said in there.
Besides... still no Mini-Canach. Hoped so much that maybe we’ll get one. Now I’m really sad... *cry*
I so much hoped that a Mini-Canach would be the reward of the story dungeon (like Rox’ bag) or in store to buy… But nothing… or have I overlooked something?
I still want a Mini of Canach very much!
Please Anet add one!
Now there ist the offical answer. It WAS an exploit.
Players were exploiting it by deleting and remaking characters, so we made it based on your entire account.
Edit:
Due to the reward being so high, and the upscaling for the living world, this was seen as being bad.
Having completed the solo mission against Canach, now I want to help him even more.
He isnt communicating much as a madman, or an evil man.
Same here. Also, now I hate Kiel very much.
Me, too. All the times she is like “he is evil we have to punish him”. Is she even listening what he’s saying?? And now she wants us to HELP the consortium with their contracts. Is she mad? Why can’t we help the settlers to go out of the dangerous areas in which the contracts are and let Canachs plan work like it was intended to destroy the bad contracts?
Canachs plan seems to be dangerous for anyone near the contracts. But we could evacuate the people there and so only the good intention of his plan will work out. THAT would be good.
EDIT: He looks so sad… Poor Canach. Wants the good things but with the wrong methods.
Lost Shore – Old Letters for those who are interested in the Story
I want a Miniature-Canach! – Do you want one, too?
(edited by Niyo.5920)
In another thread was mentioned that you can do it again and then receive the reward.
It was a mistake that you could get it per character and not only per account. Now it’s right.
According to new patch notes:
" All players will now be able claim the reward for completing this instance once more on any character." – Mark KatzbachThis made me question even more if this is an exploit, since they state that the reward can be claimed once on any character, and as someone said before this is not as fast as it seems.
Before the patch you should got the reward once per account, but some people haven’t got a reward cause they made the dungeon before the first patch. And now these people can do it again with this character to get it now. (All the other who done it, too.) That’s how I understand this.
Hope it’s now account-bound.
Really? An exploit? How is it an exploit, if you make a brand new character, you do your introduction fight, you go to Lion’s Arch, you take a ship to Southsun, you’re careful not to die till you get to the place, and you use your skills to defeat this guy, being it easy or hard. This whole process takes like 20-30 minutes. << And all this, within perfect compliance with the game’s rules. No cheating is involved here.
Or, wait, wait.. is it an exploit, because some of you guys don’t have any empty slots left and you can’t do it without deleting your current characters? Oh, I’m sorry about that. I see where you’re going there. Not my fault you filled all of your slots.
My 2 cents.
The only sane post in this thread is written by Leonsky.
But it was offically said that it was not intended to be a reward per character. And you are posting here in this thread where it was mentioned. So you have to know that it’s an exploit. So don’t do it or don’t whine if you’ll get banned.
Scott gave us an explanation for Canach’s new look. However, since no npc seems to notice that he is completely different, I’m starting to think that it was just an excuse and that they just changed his appearence without giving it much thought. I wonder if they thought that we wouldn’t notice. We are not five years old.
I thought the same. It’s such a pity that Kiel said nothing about his new appearance. I’m really sad about that. *cry*
