Electro-magnetic Glider + Reaper’s hood + a flavour of white dye, and a little light armour creativity =
Now you can cosplay Tyrael
Actually, It’s completely fair to compare the two.
You probably didn’t realize that B&S launched the same year as GW2, but was exclusive to Korea. In the following years it branched to China and Japan.
It only hit the EU and NA last week.
So, GW2 and B&S share legs.
I agree with BDO having the champ title of character creators, but then again I heard that that feature alone is in the neighbourhood of 8Gb. With a character creator that beefy, it better look good.
Well, I’m in before deletion
Mostly agree with OP, but …
Two quick points
1) B&S character creator beats GW2’s hands down. The stock faces/bodies are plentiful, the randomiser is useful for helping to start you off, and the Slider menu has many, many options that allow you to play and create the character you want.
2) OP – if you are wearing faction gear, and then choose to open NPC dialogue, you are asking for a beating. Sorry, that’s the way it is, it’s effectivly going AFK for 30+ seconds. Faction gear is for when you actually want to participate in open world PvP.
Yes, there are trolls who will look for easy kills, then remove the faction gear before you can get retribution. These folks are found in any aspect of PvP everywhere, even in GW2. The methods very, but the troll remains the same.
I’m guessing none of you got beyond level 20. If you weren’t feeling it, no problem. No sense in grinding a game you don’t like.
I’m finding B&S to be a nice distraction, but after an hour, I finish my gaming night with GW2. For me, B&S is fun in small bursts.
Guild Wars 2 remains my #1, but it’s nice to stretch your legs once and awhile.
Now maybe we have a way to get to Wizards Tower (assuming they drop a few updrafts between the shore and the tower)
Please?
The argument can be made that it’s more weight when swinging the weapon. It may be a bit more weighty to use, but if the difference is denting leather vs. slashing through leather, you want all the extra advantage you can get.
Though the amount of games that are accurate with anything are quite few.
No, the mechanics of a the sword type that the screenshot is depicting does not work like that.
I could cite numerous modern websites of individuals and groups that study swordplay as both profession and hobby, or point to many historical manuscripts and fechtbuchs, but really in the end, it is pointless.
I agree that to try to argue the accuracy of mechanics of real-world historical swordplay verses the art direction found in a video game is really best left to others who enjoy those types of debates.
I think it’s safe to say that what’s done is done and there will be no ‘fixing’ of previous work. My one wish would be that the artists take a bit more care in future designs and realize that no matter how “cool” a sword design looks, at a certain point the line is crossed into design absurdity.
Here’s two
1) Sorrow of Angels
Male
Norn
Born Raginar Winterwolf, this Necromancer assisted in defending the Kodan with attacks by a local tribe of Grawl. Upon witnessing the efficiency and cold brutality in which the young Necromancer dispatched the Grawl, the Kodan proclaimed “The Spirits weep for such Darkness born within one of their children”. From this, the Kodan began to refer to Raginar under the new moniker, The Spirit Sorrow. He quickly adopted the name with pride. His name was later altered by his human allies to Sorrow of Angels.
2) Harvester of Dreams
Male
Sylvari
This night born Sylvari, was granted the name of Harvester of Dreams (a colloquialism for the Grim Reaper, or Death) upon exiting the dream as a fully developed and powerful Reaper (i.e. 30 level scroll and 50 ToK).
While the name is dark, the Harvester of Dreams would rather interpret his name as ‘Gatherer of Stories’
He collects stories of other Sylvari’s experiences after their leaving the Dream so as to better understand Tyria and the people who inhabit this world.
Why do some people spend $10,000+ on a boat and tackle so they can go out and catch $5 worth of fish? Why do they spend $60,000 on a luxury car when a $500 used car would provide the same transportation?
Some say it’s all about the journey, I think it’s all about having fun setting goals and finishing them.
BTW unless you’re into pvp tracks good luck finding groups to gather the 500 tokens for the gift. Since no one runs dungeons anymore it’s proving to be the hardest part of making a legendary nowdays.
Oh really?
I started last Monday in AC to get the gift for NightFury. By Saturday night I had the Gift of Ascalon and forged the gift of Darkness.
There are people running dungeons. Mostly they are new players or vets running alts. (I think I only saw a handful of other 80’s in my groups during the week)
If you are not into speed runs, and don’t mind mentoring you can get a group fairly easy – more so if you are the one to start it.

sometimes business decisions seem good in the boardroom, but are received much differently by your customers when live.
Lol, Bandit bundle.
I think I know who the real bandits are.
I have 3 thoughts to this
1) Normally, I really wouldn’t care too much about these bundled items IF there was a theme to them all (the last one Crystal arbiter? was a good example of a well thought out bundle).
This one looks to be a bunch of random items thrown together to justify the 2000 gem cost.
2) I really need to question if this is a wise move. How many glider skins would they have sold under the more reasonable 600-700 gem price if they were stand alone items (the same goes for the outfit).
3) I know for many converting 800 gp to gems from gold is relatively do-able. Converting gold to make 2K gems shrinks the percentage of those players able to convert gold/gems somewhat, thus forcing the decision to use real money or do without.
I’m on the fence as to if I will purchase this bundle. At 2K gems (at 30% off, no less) is not an impulse buy.
Spinal Blades should work as Glider....

If they do this then they must do the Molten jetpack skin too. It’s an expensive skin that no longer drops so it would only be fitting to add one more function for it. Right?
If they were to do that, expect it’s return to the gem store to justify the cost of having a few members of the anet team make the changes to allow it ‘glide’. Those (relatively few) people that already have it are a small drop player pool, and would/should not get special treatment for an item that is ‘retired’ from active in-game player acquisition.
Shortly following this expect a wave of angry posts from the people that bought or are selling the jetpack for massive gp to complain how anet just devalued and/our gave away their ‘special snowflake’
EDIT: Full disclosure – I have the skin unlocked and am sitting on another that I’ve been waiting to sell. I would love to see it as a glider, but for reasons above have a good feeling that it won’t happen.

Why is it gone?
Try to dig up the MASSIVE thread from Engineers begging that kit-backpacks be removed. This thread was active pretty much after launch, and only became buried once Anet made the change to get rid of them – a nearly 3 year undertaking.
I believe the thread was titled “Hobo Sacks: a Terrible fashion statement”
I agree that a toggle to show the packs should have been an option, but honestly I like being able to wear my other non-kit backpacks without being overwritten or clipped by kit-packs.
Loving the Rev. Not so much on the Herald.
As I stated in another thread the ground effect is throwing me off. I think I’ll stick with the core Rev, for the foreseeable future.
Character name: The Blackwight (Norn)
Not keen on the ground effect.
What I would have liked to have see is small semi-transparent mist-dragons flying around you (kind of like the black bat aura from Night fury).
The ‘dragons’ could change colour depending on the facet
I’m on the fence about it myself.
I do think the Scythe is horribly oversized (and I play Norn on tallest setting), but at the same time I like the overall effect – for now anyway. It’s still shiny and new to me.
I can see where this graphical may become an issue if more than 2-3 Reapers are zerging on a mob(s).
Just revert Orr back 3 years to post launch.
Mob density and cc doubled.
There’s conflicting reports on this.
As of this moment, Dulfy’s site says that open/unopened both work.
Could someone verify, please.
“The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself.”
indeed.
Dev Question: Inspiration for the Chak?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: NoxInfernus.2361
I have a quick question for any Devs who were involved with the writing and creature design on Heart of Thorns.
Was the Chak in game loosely inspired by the race of chak for TSR’s Advanced Dungeons and Dragons module ‘the Needle’, which was written by Frank Mentzer and published in the late 80’s?
Your chak are intelligent/semi-intelligent insectoids, Mentzer’s were highly intelligent (if somewhat silly) arachnids. Both adventures take place in a hostile and foreign jungle. Beyond that the similarities pretty much end.
I ask because that D&D module was the first pen and paper role playing game that set me on my (long) path of table top and later video gaming. Seeing char on my computer screen brought back a few good memories. I was just wondering if this was a happy coincidence, or a developers homage to pen and paper gaming.
Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds
Still we take to the street [jungle]
For the kill with the skill to survive
It’s the eye of the tiger
It’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge
Of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the
Eye of the tiger
This is going to come back and bite Anet in the rump.
The fact is, there are a lot of people that like to play solo once in while (or the majority of their time).
I stated in a another thread, they will look at their metrics and then need to decide if bringing down the difficulty to allow the xpac to be more accessible is healthy to the overall game.
Also, remember Orr – the first few months after launch?
It can be done solo, but the problem I’ve encountered is that we (the playerbase) have been spoon fed ‘easy mode’ in the Core game for so long that now that Anet has turned things up to 11, we are having a difficult time.
Some of us will adapt over time (and many tears), some of us will leave for easier/ less stressful fair.
Of course there is a 3rd prediction …
Anyone remember Orr after the Game launched?
Look at it now.
Arenanet needs to really take a hard look at how they define ‘horizontal progression’ to what the definition of ‘gaming grind’ is.
I believe that in their quest to create no grind, they blurred the lines and are now on the other side of the fence.
Too much feature gating.
Too steep a learning curve from what the player base is used to
Slow flow story – (I find myself asking, “why do I care, again?”
It’s a real shame too, because you can see the amount of work the staff put into this xpac.
A bloody shame

I do think Anet has done a fantastic job of server maintenance and management (probably the best I’ve seen in my 16+ years of playing mmo’s).
Unfortunately no matter how talented the team or how shiny the tech, there will be a greater chance of issues occurring on a launch day than a few days later.
It happens.
As a long time gamer – I’ve seen it / I expect it / I accept it.
One specific point: Anet has yet to tell us when they are planning to ‘flip the switch’ on launch day. This means they could launch Hot at 12:01am on the 23rd (their local time), maybe the start of their business day, maybe later in the day – we don’t know.
I strongly suggest that people choosing to take a vacation day off from work consider where they are located geographically in relation to where Anet is located.
For example: I live in central time zone. I start work early, and am home by mid-afternoon. Traditionally, Anet content launches around my lunch break. By the time I get home, content has only been live for about 3-4 hours. It never made sense for me to take a day off on a launch/patch day because the reward did not = what I was giving up (a full vacation day).
Choose wisely.
There was one exception to this: Early Access 2012.
I remember getting up at 1-2am waiting for the server’s to flip on so I could reserve my first character’s names.
Maybe they might surprise us and pull another 2012?
Rule #1 of MMO’s – Never take valuable vacation time off on any launch day.
The game in question will be:
1) late in launching (towards the end of day
2) riddled with bugs that the testers missed, and will be hot fixed several times – interrupting your enjoyment.
3) the starting areas (in this case verdant brink) will be full of so many people you will miss a lot of what’s going on.
4) server issues will arise lagging out or crashing the game
5) Trolls. So many Trolls
6) All of the above
Save that Vacation day for the following Monday (26th) and treat yourself to a Monday long weekend.
I only support this if it’s called the Swordmaster skin.
I see what you did there.
nicely done.
Well, I guess I better book off a week’s worth of vacation. Between Bioware releasing the swtor Xpac, and Anet launching theirs within days of each other, I’m going to need that time off for sure.
Try maining a Warrior and have no clue as to what they have in store for us as a Elite Spec. or its companion weapon. (we’ve seen a trait line title ‘berserker’, but what the frig does that mean?
Is the new weapon a dagger, a pistol, Staff, focus? … Just. Tell. us. Anet. Please use the warrior forum to cry for your warrior. We’re busy crying for the freakin warhorn we got here, nothing we can say to you to soothe your pain.
Yeah, I know. It blows.
Ahhh, so this is what being punched in the face feels like.
No, what you are feeling is called disappointment.
Being punched in the face is much more painful – and I mean real pain, not gamer sorrow.
It’s not like warhorn was a complete and total surprise. You have all had ample time to come to terms with the idea that warhorn could be the elite spec. weapon (the start date of this thread confirms it).
Heck, a subtle hint was also dropped when they confirmed the E. Spec.’s name – Tempest.
Try maining a Warrior and have no clue as to what they have in store for us as a Elite Spec. or its companion weapon. (we’ve seen a trait line title ‘berserker’, but what the frig does that mean?
Is the new weapon a dagger, a pistol, Staff, focus? … Just. Tell. us. Anet.
I wouldn’t think that it will be profession specific. There’s no armor in the game that is profession specific only. Even starting ‘armors’ can be played across professions, so long as it is of the same weight type e.g. Necro skull or demon mask skins can be transmuted on ele’s and mesmers (different professions, same Armour weight class).
I’ll be very surprised if they introduce profession specific items this late in the game’s life.
A weapon swap would improve the diversity of the profession.
What many are failing to understand is that this is a BETA, not a head start.
By playing Revenant, you are providing valuable metrics and feedback to Anet so that they can tweak and improve that profession. Players have an uncanny knack for finding issues that Anet’s in-house testers seem to miss – this is why Rev is introduced in the live environment. Aggressive testing.
As a pre-purchaser of HoT, you bought the right to play in their beta’s and be a tester, if you choose.
There is inherent risk to this. Precursors and valuable loot will drop (e.g. Queen Bee). If you play a Rev, you need to accept this risk and understand that you will not be able to keep said item at the conclusion of the event.
Some have asked/questioned why crafting materials, coins, or other ‘lesser’ items not be kept. The answer to this is simple. Where do you draw the line? Crafting Mats, Rares, Exotics, Ascended loot boxes?
No, this is an all or nothing proposal.
I don’t even want to get into the discussion of unlimited exotics and the mystic forge (to generate precursors). If anyone complains about that …. ugh!
Remember – Beta Test, Not Head start.
I feel a weapon swap is needed.
As others have said, the weapons are tied to the Legends, that are tied to their trait lines.
If I choose to use a Ventari/Mallyx legend set up, I almost need to take their associated trait lines to get the most out of them. I should take their associated weapons sets, BUT because I’m limited to only one (set), this means I’m favoring that legend over the other.
I can now see why people have been saying that the Rev is limiting in it’s customization.
I’m locked into 2 legends (in combat)
I’m locked into 2 of the 3 trait lines (to get the most out of my legend)
I’m locked into one weapon set (of which certain groupings are optimized for certain legends i.e. mace/axe for Mallyx, hammer for jalis, staff for ventari, etc,
I really don’t see the harm in add a weapon swap – heck, put it on a slightly longer cool down for balance (if that’s an issue).
Mechanically, I would agree.
Aesthetically, I feel they got it. Bang on.
The spins and strikes are very well done. Good job art team and animators.
I transmuted the scythe skin on to the staff, and for the first time in a long while I was visually excited about the combat (Final Rest is also impressive).
I’m going to have to agree with the OP on this.
Necro’s knew at xpac announcement that they would get G.sword (Very, very, strongly hinted at by Colin), and Ranger’s to get Staff (this was outright confirmed)
Mesmer’s had a very strong indicator in the HoT trailer that Shield was to be their new weapon. Engineer’s were also giving strong video trailer hints.
Some data-mined hints, and then the official reveal confirmed for the Longbow being added to the Guardian kitten nal.
Some clues for what the remainder are getting may/may not be hinted at if you dissect the sparse information provided by Anet. Nothing confirmed yet.
I am chomping at the bit to know what Warrior, Thief, and Elementalist are to get.
I’ve spent a few of my BL tickets on a chance that the skins I traded for are of the correct weapon type. Time will tell if I guessed correctly, or if those skins will be TP’s to get cash to buy the ‘correct’ skins.
Anet – Please give us some more information on what we could expect for the remaining Elite Specializations weapon allotments
Total Characters: 14
- Mesmer 1 –80
- Guardian 2– 80,80
- Necromancer 1 – 80
- Ranger 2 –80,80
- Elementalist 1 – 80
- Warrior 4 – 80,80,27, & 1 (name placeholder for future Revenant)
- Thief 1 –80
- Engineer 2 – 80,80
Sorry Penguin, it sounds like you and the rest just had a spot of bad luck. Maybe someone didn’t blast a fire field, or a few crits didn’t go off for that last push across the finish line.
It sucks, but “0.005%” is pretty darn good.
If you had said that you and the other Teq Vets were only able to get Teq down to second battery phase, I would then be in complete agreement with you. Soren, and the rest know their stuff.
If any player’s could kill the new and improved super-mega Teq, it’s you folks.
*sans exploits/bugs, of course.
You guys will figure it out in time. That I’m sure.
Outfits for the Gem Shop (Game revenue)
Armor in Game (player retention)
Learn to accept it, for Anet’s course is set.
She could figure out a way to get the Breachmaker to fly, build the giant marionette, and develop holographic Hard-light weapons i.e. Scarlet’s rainbow (although Moto did a much better job -super adventure weapons). It’s not a stretch to think she developed/acquired tech for an orbital battle platform
Edit- added in a few more examples
(edited by NoxInfernus.2361)
Keep in mind the ‘orbital strike’ goes all the way back to when the Aetherblades sacked Lion’s Arch. Back during the Battle for L.A. player’s were often bombarded with the unseen space laser, but we just wrote it off as being some of Scarlet’s tech.
So I don’t know.
I’d like to think, lore-wise, that Engineers have learned to ‘hack’ Scarlet’s death-beam for our own use, but I tend to think that the #3 suggestion is closer to the truth.
I like the changes.
Sorry OP, you do not speak for me.
All those cannons around the Fort are very phallic.
It sends the message:
“Mess with LA, and we’ll F you up”
Oh My
This past weekend my guild welcomed a dozen new members. Of those dozen, seven were new(ish) players that had the game for about a month (a few only a couple of weeks).
Also, keep in mind University/college finals are going on, high school final are about to begin, and many people take vacation this time of year to avoid the messy ‘summer rush’. Also consider, some people just want to take a break until HOT launches. They have every intention of coming back.
Are people leaving? Sure.
But there’s a big difference from a temporary hiatus, and a full uninstall.
We have Chuck Norris and the rest of Delta Force standing by to deploy.
Say the word and Operation: RescueFroggie is go.
The two professions I would have used the chainwhip with are the two professions that get more ‘sword’ than ‘whip’ (Thief / Warrior)
for 600 gems, I’ll pass.
If they whip it good, I may reconsider.
Must be… OFFHANDPISTOL! … wuum… wwwwuuuummm!!! daka daka wuuuuum!!!
If it is Pistol (main or OH) you might want to consider investing in the Chainsword Skin on the TP (I think they are going for around 150gp?)
I would think there would be a huge increase of Norn-Marine Warriors once that Spec. Drops.
*If one is on a budget, the skin from a steamblade works as well …just no wuum wwwuuummm sound
Layout- It was not without it’s charm, but it player’s clustered around the central hub between the bank, Black Lion, and crafting stations. Many other areas were rarely visited, other than people doing jumping puzzles, WvW reset day (the hour before), and for a short time – the Moa races.
I hope they keep the basic idea of how ruined LA is, in that spread people out through out the map with a few banks, crafting corners, Black Lion, etc.
Aesthetic – Old L.A. was fun, and I enjoyed the pirate/nautical theme – but that time has past. While I would certainly welcome the new L.A. to have places that celebrates the nautical theme, the days of Ships/boats turned to homes and stores are gone.
I like the few concept drawing that they have shown, and I think the are on the right path.
We have to remember that the New L.A. will be Tyria’s newest city. It should have architecture and technology which shows the current state of the world. This technology should be subtle, but ever present (not so in your face like Rata Sum or Black Citadel – where the purpose of tech in those places differs than would be used in L.A. )
Size – Spread it out across the whole map – to encourage people to explore and hang out.
Future events – Here I look to Ebonhawke for inspiration. In that city (which technically is part of the zone) there are several small triggered/timed events that occur.
Sometimes the lowest bidder is not the best option.
However I get the feeling that the Consortium IS the only game in town that’s not racially linked to another city.
(too bad the PACT doesn’t have a Corp of Engineers … that’s still alive, that is).
I’ve recently looked back and have begun to remember Orr prior to being nerfed.
Back then it was considered hell. At least 2x the mob density and the CC’s were everywhere. If you were lucky enough to make it to where you want to go, it was:
1) with a massive train following you
2) with no small degree of patience and skill
3) you got lucky, and were ping ponged to where you wanted to go.
Yes, back then Orr was considered hard. Some vocal folks cried out that it was bad level design and demanded it be nerfed, and it was.
I now run through Orr (some of my favorite zones) and think back fondly to those days. This is a warzone. A battle building up to the pinnacle of your character’s story. It should be hard. It should test you, and challenge you to use every skill you have learned up to that point.
Some content needs to be hard, if it makes sense to the story. Making something challenging all the time, just because, is risking frustrating your player base and may cause loss of players.
Of course, with risk must come the appropriate rewards.
That’s a discussion for another time.
