Necro weren’t wanted in the old PvE meta, before HoT release and condition damage buff. Back then Sinister and Viper armor / trinkets weren’t available and Necros were outcasts alongside Bearbow Rangers specially when it came to Dungeon running, that was old end-game content.
Right now, Necros do pretty decent in PvE, you might see FotM groups asking for nothing but Necros, this is because of the Epidemic utility “bounce” that copies conditions from a target to all adjacent foes. Having multiple necros cast it results in great condition spam, therefore in shorter fights against groups or Bosses that spwan with adds alongside them .
Strictly speaking, Necros still have one of the lowest DPS (source: http://qtfy.enjin.com/dps ) but utilities such as epidemic, projectile blocking from Corrosive Poison Cloud, excellent CC and great survivability (high vitality + second lifebar) make running end-game, like FotM, content a breeze.
Necros are also wanted in Raids where some bosses only take condition damage (Red Guard at VG) and when you need to Copy all conditions from Boss to lesser adds to whipe them fast (Gorseval).
Guardian: Cancer share.
Unfortunately even if you sacrifice all team utilities and focus on pure dps your damage will still be about 30% less than an Elementalist or thief.
^This.
As a melee warrior you are expected to build Might up quickly and share it with your party, while buffing power and crit chance with your banners. PS build might be “old” but it’s what most parties will expect you to run in PvE end-content like FotM and Raids.
If you like spinning for dealing damage (Axe off hand) I suggest to try Necromancer, Reaper specialization turns you into a Necrocopter but spinny axe offhand is awful DPS as a Warrior.
I’m bumping this because reasons. Fix it please.

It is when you run a hammer Guardian. All you need to know is the mechanics and run along competent people.
It can and have been done but people just do it for the lulz. It’s not as efficient as having a meta composition because, as you said, each class brings something different to the table and some mechanics make fights way easier i.e: Necros on Gorseval, no other class have something similar to Epidemic or can teleport the downed (well Search and Rescue on Ranger is similar but you’ll have to give up Glyph or one Spirit…). No Other class have Alacrity except Chronomancers, no other class can share Might as fast and consistent as PS or Condi PS Warriors… You get the point.
I main a Guardian. I don’t play Guardian in PvP because it doesn’t suit my playstyle, also because they’re somehow cheap IMHO when stacking (2 or more on a point) or against new players.
I play power Necro and condi Warrior in PvP and rarely lose a 1v1 vs a Guardian. Just know that they (we)‘re 1 trick ponies that won’t have anything else to do if you cleanse/transfer the initial burning burst (Base Guardian Burn Burst Build) or stay out of traps/dodge out when you get pulled (Meditrapper). One way to tell them apart is the Virtues (core Guardian for burning and DH for Trappers).
Watch some videos and I say respectfully to L2P against the class because yeah, balance won’t come any time soon.
I trash them on my condi warrior and I’m no pro. They’re just below average players in terms of skill. My advice is to hang til they out of initiative using blocks, invul, dodges cleanses and then stun them… After that the real fun begins. If you can ’t do that just walk off the point. They have crap mobility.
To all of you, condi thieves <3
A Norn? Best case scenario he’ll be an Asura tinier than Taimi wearing a wig.
Clearly that is a norn stealth skin for Scruffy 2.0, piloted by Taimi.
Fair enough
A Norn? Best case scenario he’ll be an Asura tinier than Taimi wearing a wig.
Since there are some of us that still own Copper-fed Salvage-o-Matics that are just sitting in our banks and we won’t get compensation I suggest this:
Make them kittenable Mystic Forge item that has a higher chance than usual (talking around 7%) to get a precursor.
Result: No more complains about this and a few happy players.
Ez.
Harsh words coming from someone who states that he had his first Gorserval kill last week. Would love to see your words backed up with some evidence. Food for the thought.
I’ve literally no idea what ur goin on about, seems to me liek ur literally pulling words out of ur kitten . I got my 1st gors kill months ago now.. thx. as to rest of posters who r responding negatively (and tangentially) to me, I’m just ignoring them cos they stated their opinions alrdy. I have no problm wit that
I gots no evidence to give and neither do u, so just chill and move on yo
PS in respect to comparison to arah, with pugs I had em take just as long as (or even longer than) pugs with 100 cm. soloing is like ~2x longer at least. I used to sell em too so I know prices, 24g (for 4 spots) was usually a given. but that was for 1-2 hrs of hard work, so well earned. all these guys selling 100 cm are doin is speedrunning 30min or so and selling one spot for 100g, or 25g per person. For more then half the work/effort easily.. u see the point tho
I was talking to frostdraco. Not to you. I think you were the one who pulled his answer from his kitten since I wasn’t talking to you.
prob those same ppl that buy lvl 100 cm run for literally yes – 100g
always makes me cry when i see these posts in-game. If u ever wonder how low a skill lvl u can expect of average casual player.. unfortunately this is it
it’s funny but arah path took roughly same time as 100 cm does, once upon a time. only arah paths went for like ~4g a pop, which was hella lot cheaper lol
I dunno what’s wrong with majority of this playerbase tbh. nothing I ever learn anymore abt them shocks me, bc i have such low low expectations and bad opinions of every pug I come across to even begin with.. well now ya know doncha
PS how do u think I felt when i 1st learned raid wing prices – esp for xera and stuff? rhetorical ye but shocked senseless would be close to it. if I spend months to scrape by enough gold to craft a legend then I could prob buy one whole wing for a single week for that sum, for grand total of like 3 li. makes me laugh and cry when I think of it xD
And i guess thats why you go around every forums posting about how you have so many issues with loot and other things? Or how about (as mentioned above), you advise people to fake LI’s?
Maybe the reason the pugs you get are so bad is because they have to carry you? Food for thought.
Harsh words coming from someone who states that he had his first Gorserval kill last week. Would love to see your words backed up with some evidence. Food for the thought.
Every other heavy class has the option to taunt in their traitlines (Eye for an Eye – Revenant and Bloody Roar – Warrior). Besides, the update of Piercing Light affected the Guardian’s CC, we need access to this condition. I think that taunt in Guardian could be added to activating Virtues in the following traits:
Dragon Hunter:
Big Game Hunter: Striking an enemy tethered by your Spear of Justice taunts your enemy, causes vulnerability and increases damage dealt.
Bulwark: Taunt enemies when you activate Shield of Courage. Shield of Courage is larger and lasts longer.
Virtues
Battle Presence: Nearby allies gain Virtue of Resolve’s passive effect. Activating Virtue of Resolve taunts enemies.
Think this will make PvE and PvP gameplay of the DH more dynamic and less static, as it is now.
Marica stands for an offensive way to call male homosexuals in latin america. It would translate in english as the word composed by 3 letters that starts with F and ends with G.
Second whisper is “are you really that noob?”
Thanks guys. It’s…not what I wanted to hear but it’s appreciated.
General consensus seems to be my group is better with me on DPS (guard or no) and a PUG healer. It’s a shame, I quite enjoy my Mender’s DH in PvP.
Same with burns huh? I’ll look into scepter/sword torch then. Plus side, I’d be able to run either build. Down-side, it looks like I’m making another Berserker set. So boring. I prefer min-maxing a skill or action over min-maxing stats.
I would like to discuss more about why burn Guard isn’t viable. Burning is the strongest condi in the game and Guard can buff it to 100% duration without Viper’s. From what you’re saying, it sounds like even going full Sinister wouldn’t be enough to offset the loss of the Power and Ferocity from ’zerkers. That about right? The scaling is really that bad? dang.
In the end, I’ll play what my group needs. Cheers
I recommend to make another class if you want to play something different to DH DPS. I have Viper/Sinister gear on my Burnzerker and Necro. I have tried some burn builds on my Guardian and, even if they can be fun, you end up losing most of your utilities and still won’t be dealing high enough damage. You’ll also will be unable to provide the constant 25 might stacks you get from Burnzerker.
I don’t understand one thing and it’s the reason you’ll be making another zerker set. Why? Both are zerker with Scholar Runes, only difference is that you don’t need any Assassin gear/trinkets if you’re running Scepter-Sword/Torch and Radiance (because of Right-Hand Strength).
However guard isn’t meh. The pure scepter build and the sc/sw build have a decent amount of dps. It also brings good CC and other utility that the group might value (blocks, reflects).
Yes, I stand corrected, Guardian is not meh, I was a little harsh on that one. I just hope the class could bring something new to the table some day. I wish Retaliation wasn’t the bad buff it became after it got nerfed so a perma-Retaliation Tank Guardian could become viable in raids. A man can dream
Hey there. The problem with healing Guardian is that anything you do can be done way better by a Druid and even a Tempest dedicated to heal. When it comes to burn Guardian it might work but Burnzerker will be always more useful since it gives 25 constant Might Stacks while having great condition damage.
If you don’t like the Hammer build I suggest to try the Scepter/Sword-Torch that gives you some condition damage with Torch and Radiance traitline http://qtfy.enjin.com/guardian This build is great for the green circle group in VG because the ranged damage of Scepter and Mobility with Sword #2 but damage is not that great.
Right now Guardian is pretty much meh, I’m playing Burnzerker or Power PS on raids and FotM (sometimes also play with my Viper Necro). If you want to play healer I suggest to make a Druid.
Submit a ticket. They usually help you when you mess up selecting stats or gear you did not intend to. It helped me with a pair of gloves, support is really good in this game.
On the other hand this non-MF issue with PvP ascended gear must be addressed ASAP by ANET.
Last patch went by and this didn’t get fixed. Anet please your attention to this matter, right now purchasing ascended rings from PvP is a waste of resources and time.
Indeed, most are pretty old. You can always check http://qtfy.enjin.com/guardian for The RAID setup that is what most people will ask you to run once you join a Raid party. These builds include video for rotations and some skill explanation. Please note that the builds found here are also used in high level fractals of the mists and are referred as “Meta Builds”, meaning they will deal the highest damage output (Scepter) and the most utility alongside damage (Hammer).
For PvP current meta is found here http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Dragonhunter_-_Meditrapper
I don’t play WVW but think some builds are also found on the metabattle page.
Now, you’ll find some people arguing that meta builds are not optimal due their “glassy” nature and I won’t even go there… But I can tell you that Guardian is one of the easiest classes due the amount of active defenses they have (blinds, blocks, reflects).
Hope this helps you.
Right now, scepter has the highest damage output for Guardian. Source: http://qtfy.enjin.com/dps
It is used in PvE, PvP and some builds in WvW.
Just saying.
Unfortunately, PUGS often ignore/forget/don’t care about the social awkwardness instability and, as both of your weapon sets are melee, you can get your health cut down really quick because of agony stacks. On the good side, you have good CC (Elite and Mace 5) and good “panic button” (GS 3), ok damage and provide constant 25 stacks of Might.
Power PS is great when you are in an organized group in FotM and wanted for most raids. My advice is to start playing PS warrior but aim to get the gear for a burnzerker, that is a great build to play with, has more survivability in FotM and is also wanted in
raids (you can switch from condi to power as you won’t be getting rid of your old gear).
The worst fractal is the one you do with a party that has no idea about what they’re running. Everything else is doable.
Most challenging is Nightmare at the moment because it came out recently. Uncategorized can be annoying if your party doesn’t have reflects for the Harpies part but I really enjoy the boss fights and overall ambientation.
FOR HARAMBE!
Message Body length must at least be 15.
Aim for a Condi PS. In the meantime you can do the following to increase your survivability:
- Don’t play Mace/Shield. Go Axe/Mace. The increased vulnerability you apply makes foes die faster.
- As a PS Warrior you have more than 2 dodges. Whirlwind Attack is your “panic button”. Save it unless you are killing trash or foes are against a wall.
- Buy defensive pots for every run, have some to spare in case things take more time.
- If you really need, swap Blood Reckoning for Healing Signet. This will mean less damage but more survivability.
- Use food and utilities. For optimal survival combine Healing Signet with Mango Pies, if you’re sticking with BR go with Omnomberry Ghosts. Sharpening Stones will boost your damage.
- I might sound like an kitten on this one but be selective with your groups. If you are running alongside with ranged classes guess who’s gonna be the one dying all the time. I know it’s hard to always find optimal parties pugging but there are some classes you might want more. Hammer DH will boost your defense, Chrono will be great for the quickness and alacrity (more hundred blades, berserker mode, etc). Healing Druids will also help for obvious reasons.
- Last but most important is that you know what you are doing. There are a lot of video guides in Youtube. I also recommend checking Dulfy’s http://dulfy.net/2013/01/07/gw2-fractal-of-the-mists-fotm-guide/
Hope this helps you in some way.
Anything as long as you have Healing Signet equipped. If you ever need more healing just consume a Mango Pie. Really hard to go below 50% healthpool with those 2.
Git gud and zerker.
Actually no need to git gud, scepter being the highest DPS weapon ATM you can chill in the back alongside necros and tempests.
“Getting picked” by bosses also known as “aggro” is random in this game. Having celestial armor won’t guarantee anything.
Damage, being right now below Tempest, DD, condi Druid and condi Engineer. Active defenses (blinds, blocks and reflects). Constant Protection if you are willing to sacrifice your already average DPS and play with hammer (this might be wanted for inexperienced FotM parties and practice Raid runs).
Female human all the way. Armor combinations look really beautiful on them (this is not the classic semi-naked BIS armor MMO) the voice acting is great, the attack animations are fluent and graceful. They look great holding a Greatsword that will be your weapon to go most of the time while leveling and once you hit lvl 80.
+1
Please make it also include armor/trinkets/weapons/food/utility
Sup everyone, so I came back after 1 year break and i would like to create a new character and was thinking about guardian. But I am unsure if its really viable/fun to play as.
Im interested in everything PvE, PvP, WvW etc.So is guardian good or is warrior better?
Hello OP, I’m going to answer by assuming that you are going to play the current meta builds for each game scenario
PVE: Warrior is better. This is simply because both metabuilds (PS and con PS) are in high demand in every endgame content (High level FotM and Raids). This is because you’ll be constantly providing 25 stacks of might to your party/squad members. Guardian has a decent DPS but is currently outshined by Elementalist, DD and condi Ranger. Warrior is better.
PVP: This depends on playstyle. DH will be good holding points, has a good damage mostly against unexperienced/unskilled players and relies on traps. Pretty decent survivability and easy to play. Known in the PVP community as Cheese or DragonCancer. Warrior has a good mobility, current metalbuild deals high condition damage with good survivability, upper thing of this build is that will trash necros and have a really high chance to win against condi chronos, that are 2 of the most annoying PVP current builds. Depends on what you like to play.
WvW: Don’t know.
According to Skyrim lore, if you make a character named Aela the class must be Ranger and not Mesmer. That’s your problem.
Craft.
Other places where you can get ascended armor/weapon then change the stats via the MF:
If you are into FotM: Get your ascended trinkets with the end-game AR (6 + 9 infusions on attuned earrings, 2 + 8 on ascended backpiece and 2 + 8 on rings) this will get you to 86 AR meaning you can run all the daily initiate and adept fractals and some on expert tier (til level 60) for a (not so high) chance to get ascended equipment as a reward.
PvP and WvW tracks also have a chance to reward ascended chests.
Some achievements like Ambrite Weapon Collection, Leystone armor and Machined Weapons collection will give you ascended equipment once they are completed.
On the other hand, if you have a large amount of gold just buy but crafting/getting from drops and achievements is way cheaper.
Hey that’s a pretty cool blade! But as you’ve been told, we already have 2 “ice” legendaries.
On my part, I would love to see a legendary weapon with oriental features. We already have Belinda’s Greatsword Skin so I was thinking the new legendary Sword could be something more like a wakizashi.
Murasama comes to my mind (because of the Muramasa Sengo that was a famous swordsmith in Japan), Castlevania SotN had a sword named Muramasa that got stronger as it consumed your enemies blood, there’s also an RPG called Muramasa: The Demon Blade and they all revolve around the idea of a sword that has been possessed and needs to be fed with blood. Some bloody footprints would be great and it would have to be a red blade.
How cool would it look on thieves or dark themed warriors/guardians/revenants/mesmers?
(edited by NumenorLord.6539)
I agree. Torch 5 reworked (burns on ticks or making it a fire field) could make a Viper/Sinister Guardian viable.
On the other hand comparing to Blizzard (yikes) is a bit harsh and unnecessary IMO.
Conjure Spirit Weapon
New skill associated with all the Spirit Weapons (Bow of Truth, Hammer of Wisdom, Shield of the Avenger and Sword of Justice) that replaces the Command utility. The Guardian conjures the Spirit Weapon as a 3rd weapon set (Conjured SW gets destroyed on weapon swap) granting him the same weapon skills given regularly by those weapons (Longbow, Hammer, Shield and Greatsword). For Shield of the Avenger a mainhand weapon must be equipped or conjuring the SotA will result in having only 2 weapon skills.
Hands up if this image was one of the reasons you chose to play Guardian
If by ideal you mean dealing out the highest damage while staying alive I think of 2 possible outcomes:
Condition Team:
Burnzerker and 4 Viper Necros
Power Team:
PS Warrior, Magi Druid and 3 Staff Elementalists (maybe swap 1 Ele or Druid depending on Fractal for a Staff DD when stealth is needed or a Scepter DH when reflects are needed).
I have onther one:
Utility – Mind Blown
You hit the traget with steady hand strike, Stealing one of his Utility skill (the skill replaces the “Mind Blown” utility skill untill you use it) and making that utility skill go on CD.
Ugh ugh ugh! I already have the animation of that one!

HoT content is designed to be harder. Starting from scratch won’t change this. If you’re dying a lot this might be due to:
1. A big part of the content in this map is intended to be cleared by large groups and right now everyone is… Yes in the Mad King’s Labyrinth. I asume that once the halloween event is over players will return to HoT maps, thereby you will die less/ get resurrected more often.
2. Take a look at your build and the weapons you are using. A long range weapon weapon might come handy (LB for condition build, Rifle for power build). There’s nothing wrong in adding some survivability to your build if you are dying too often. Defense traitline will always be there.
3. Level your masteries. They help you a lot to clear the content and some are required to access to certain parts/content. There is a thread somewhere that says what to prioritize when you start.
4. Some food can help you. I recommend Mango Pie (this plus healing signet makes you almost an immortal warrior) or Omnomberry Ghost if you have a high crit chance.
Don’t give up! just adapt, remember that “the jungle provides”.
Wear a helmet. Headbutt is the most fun elite skill warriors have.
I’m wearing Furrocious Cat Ears. Have I been playing my warrior wrong all this time? On a more serious note I agree, it’s a really fun skill in both PvE and PvP (I don’t touch WvW but I guess Banner is still king there).
Do you have the burning on block trait on?
This or shattered aegis.
I love PS and think it would be a wise choice because all that you have already been told in the previous posts (also knowing that Rev just got nerfed hard)…
BUT
Fractals with poison trail are a real pain when you are on melee. Fractals with social awkwardness instability are annoying if there’s another party member in melee. PS warrior is no good for ranged, you have to go Rifle because you lack the condi damage for LB being effective. there are several fight where melee is a no-no.
So I would advice to go PS but start thinking to build yourself a burnzerker for those t4 FotM. Good thing is that PS warrior has always a spot (actually 2) on raids so you actually can get most of the trinkets from there. On the other hand Rev is no longer necessary (I’m not saying it’s useless) in raids.
If I would like to play with retaliation (wish it was a better boon, after it got nerfed it became more like a filler boon) I would go with the Radiance Traitline (Healer’s Retribution, Retribution and Perfect Inscriptions/Radiant retaliation). I would also get a big amount of toughness and vitality since there’s not much point in using retaliation if you’re gonna be dead fast. Activating Light Auras will make GS a good weapon but I would chose Focus over Shield for blasting and granting area retaliation and because of blocks.
Runes of the trooper AH and shouts… I don’t know, they won’t give you a lot of survival and won’t compensate the build for more survivability. I’d probably go with Honor instead of Zeal, using Bulwark, PoH and Writ of Persistence… Would chose Mender’s amulet and some runes that add survival like Dolyak or Resistance (more aegis) for survival. I would add some signets to the build so perfect inscriptions work (might even add elite signet skill).
In the end high damage output+retaliation won’t work pretty well.
Big side note: It’s really uncommon killing someone in PvP with retaliation.
Hope this helps.
I like it. It’s the first time I see moving parts animations for an armor in an MMO. Here’s a link to the vid
8years earlier…….
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crQgtHupmjE
Never heard of that game before. I learned something new today.
Hey, besides completing the PvP and WvW tracks you can run 8 different dungeon paths daily to get Chest of Dungeoneering and chose the Bag of Shards of Zhaitan (150 shards) that’s about the same you get for completing 2 paths daily.
Dungeons I recommend to run daily:
Ascalonian Catacombs: All paths (path 2 might be a bit hard at the end with inexperienced players) and Story
Caudecus Manor: All paths if you have a thief that knows what he’s doing
Citadel of Flame: Path 1 and 2
Sorrow’s Embrace: Paths 1 and 3
Honor of the Waves: Path 1
Twilight Arbor: Up (easiest) and forward
Crucible of Eternity: All paths
(You will need to do this 4 days to get the 500 shards you need).
Also, as you might already know, paths 1 and 2 in Arah are the faster. Try to find experienced parties to run it daily (not parties with beginners trying to get the DM achievement) so you can get the shards faster.
Hope this helps.
