i dont make the headlines, i find us gun killings apaling, but its a kittened up world where this doesnt make head lines.

Only really major disasters do, like this airplane crash.

how can you not see the difference?

I don’t see a difference. Human lives are human lives, no matter how widely they’re reported.

It seems that you are the one lacking in empathy, since you’re only feel it when the media tells you to.

“i find us gun killings apaling,”

reading comprehension much.

Then what is this difference you’re talking about? Either anything that could possibly reference any recent tragedy should be taken out of the game, or nothing.

It’s based on a bug that happened in beta, combined with old war films, and the childhood activity of running around pretending to be an aeroplane.

Also, if you check, the number of people who are actually offended is not anywhere near as big as you think.

Today I saw an engineer shoot at another player with a pistol. I am highly offended and my butt is hurt.

I think you are being insensitive. Obviously Anet had this planned for months and didn’t mean anything by it, but clearly you don’t understand that people have lost their friends and families in plane crashes (recently) and seeing this in game “joke” might take offence.

Clearly you don’t understand that equally nonspecific people have lost their friends and families in war, or to gun and knife crime (recently) and seeing these in game “features” might take offence.

I can see clearly that in game there are no jokes or pranks being played on me in correlation with guns in game.

While most of your announcement is good, I would urge you to re-consider this part. Until PS replayability is added, you’re taking a piece of content that anyone can access at any time, and limiting it to only those players who have the story step active. Experiment with a soloable dungeon if you like, but don’t keep taking away content.

How many people do you know that have voluntarily initiated Arah story mode more than once for the same character? Further, this won’t stop any of us from joining someone else’s party and going through it again. And even further, it’s not as if we can redo any other part of the personal story.

To me, this change finally makes the final step in the personal story consistent with all the steps that led up to it: they are are soloable (if desired), they cannot be replayed (except by joining someone else doing them for the first time), and they don’t act as a barrier to any other content in the game.

Plenty, not that the numbers overly matter. I’ve personally done it a heap of times – it was my go-to story dungeon back when that used to come up in the dailies. No, it’s probably not the most popular content in itself, but that’s not a good reason to restrict access to it.

I don’t see that ‘consistency’ is a good excuse to restrict access either. As I said, they can make a soloable dungeon if desired (though my preferred solution to the ‘group content surprise’, was to add all the other story dungeons into PS progress. But that’s also irrelevant to the current argument).

The lack of replayability is one of the major flaws of the PS system, AND Anet recognises this… but they’re nonetheless choosing to remove replayable content. I consider this a bad thing.

I understand Atheism less then I understand God/Allah. Seems to be a group of people set on letting everyone else know they are wrong.

Atheism is just the lack of a belief, you are thinking of anti-theism.

If Atheism is the lack of belief how can you get anybody to believe in it?

You don’t believe in atheism. You believe that the explanations for the universe’s phenomena don’t require the existence of a magic ghost that breaks the laws of physics and morality on a whim.

And as far as these logical tricks that you’re trying to play, good luck. The burden of proof is on religion to prove that it’s true, not on me or anyone else to prove that it’s false.

If you do believe that it’s false, however, you are going beyond atheism.

Atheism literally means “without (a) god”, so claiming that a belief system that relies on the existence of one is false doesn’t got beyond atheism, strictly speaking.
What you’re thinking of is probably agnosticism – it basically says that there might or might not be a god (among other things, but the whole god thing is the case at hand), but it’s impossible to prove it either way. Many agnostics do not explicitly believe in a deity of any kind because of this and are thus also atheists, but one doesn’t go hand in hand with the other.

Edit: I see you quoted me in the meantime. My answer is still the same, though one could add that atheism is mostly an individual thing, which only evolves into anti-theism when applied to others. Again, one does not automatically come with the other.

The difference is between “not believing in anything” and “believing in nothing.” In practice, there are a bunch of religions, and you can simply not believe in any of them. However, if you believe that they are false, then you move beyond a lack of belief, and into anti-theism. The huge majority of atheists are also anti-theists.

But yes, I take your point that the distinction is irrelevant without the input of other people.

can this topic get locked already?

Just be patient. It’s really very civil, especially for the subject matter, so no hurry.

I do not believe in this Atheism.

You’re quite free not to

Though it makes me wonder how one can believe or “not believe” in a concept that states there is nothing to believe in in the first place.

You also are moving beyond atheism. If the concept states that there is nothing to believe in, then you are denying beliefs that state that there is something to believe in (rather than simply not believing in those beliefs). It’s an important distinction.

As for the people talking about gold, reddit gave figures of 80g/day jsut with a dungeon tour. Do that for a week and bam 600g. Also TP and selling.
I called myself middle class because that’s how it is. I know people in the hundred thousands gold so I feel middle class.

That’s like calling a multimillionaire middle class, compared to the Forbes Rich List.

And yeah. Bam. 600g as easy as that…

If you can trade more than 500g in a week, what would be the purpose of limiting mailed gold to 500g a week in the first place?

The targeted parties(hacking gold sellers) would just trade off all the gold making the change to mailed gold moot.

At the very minimum, moving from ‘selling gold’ to ‘selling a random selection of objects based on their TP value’ severely complicates the gold sellers’ operations.

They word Gay has also been discussed here alot; where I grew up it was still a term that meant ‘happy’. Not Homosexual. But thank you to whoever is responsible for perverting such a nice and innocent word.

I am interested in how you’re going to justify that homosexuality is a “perversion” or in any way mutually exclusive from “nice and innocent.”

Would you like me to change the word perverting? How about one of these?
distort, warp, corrupt, subvert, twist, bend, abuse, divert, deflect, misapply, misuse, misrepresent, misinterpret, misconstrue, falsify, garble
I used the word as a descriptive word, because Gay originally meant “happy” and has been (take your pick) distorted, warped, corrupted, subverted, twisted, bent, abused, diverted, deflected, misapplied, misused, misrepresented, misinterpreted, misconstrued, falsified, or garbled into now meaning Homosexual.
I’m not saying it’s bad or good, but now if we want to use the word GAY everyone misunderstands the use of it.

For example: “I’m having a real gay day today.” To me that says they’re having a happy day. To some it still upholds its original meaning especially those that know me and know that I actually speak english and not Americanized english. But to those that don’t know me that well they assume I’m being homophobic and jump all over me. Like you have outstandingly done. The word has been twisted and now in today’s online forums it means almost the exact opposite of what it used to. It doesn’t matter who started it or how it ended up to be what it is now, there are still those that use it for it’s original meaning as with MANY other words that are often censored now.

The new meaning of ‘lame’ may offend people, but I’m getting tired of words being perverted. Why can’t words all just go back to being what they used to be, when animals were animals and not body parts to be censored from chats and happiness and being carefree wasn’t offensive in chats. And people weren’t looking for offence in every word.

Ok, if that is what you meant…

I have no problem with you using ‘gay’ to mean happy. It isn’t the slightest bit offensive to do so. But yes, you may be misunderstood (and, indeed, not get the benefit of the doubt if your intention is ambiguous). Language does change. There are no ‘original meanings.’ We have to deal with what things mean now, and currently (and indeed, increasingly), the dominant meaning of ‘gay’ is ‘homosexual.’

And FYI I’ve been temp banned before on another mmo because of this sentence:
“Yes I know this must come as a shock to you since I am normally such a gay and carefree chap”.
because some overly sensitive buttercup thought it was offensive.
I would HATE to see this game become so politically correct that it destroys the game.

See, this is offensive. Not what you said (at least as quoted and without context), but the fact you were banned for it. As I’ve been saying, ‘gay’ is not an offensive word. Banning it implies there is something wrong with it.

Using it to mean ‘bad, lame’ is, though.

With regards to obscene guild names, is reporting individual players the best way to address the issue?

A ticket is better. The report options have nothing to do with the guild name so they won’t know that’s what you are trying to report. Get the Display name and character name as well as the guild name and tag and report it on a ticket.

Correct. Please submit a ticket. The in-game report is expressly for character names.

What do we do for pet names? I’ve seen a few rangers running around with pets that have some obscene names, and others downright derogatory towards a certain demographic.

Submit a ticket. But please be sure you include the exact spelling of the character name or the display (name.1234) name, so that the team can look into the matter. It isn’t possible to pull a pet name without account-related info.

Thanks for asking.

Gaile, could you hand up a suggestion to the policy folks? Rather than split efforts on tickets and reports, would it be more comprehensive for the report form generated by in-game reporting to include not just name, but current pet name and current guild representation as well?
This would streamline the process for the people moderating names and would make it an easier process for players to engage in.

Implementing this would take resources that are not available at this time and wouldn’t be available in the near future. This is not a trivial request, as it would need to pull information from the database on a few different levels.

Would the system really need to pull different information from the database? You’ve said that CS people can definitely check pet and guild names once they know the player’s display name. If so, could not a “Inappropriate Pet Name” report simply send the player’s display name to the GM (I assume reports do this anyway), and they navigate to the pet name themselves? Obviously I don’t know how the GMs operate or how their report-checking system looks, but it doesn’t seem like it would be a particularly difficult or time-consuming step to take.

It’s offensive when it’s used in its latest meaning, which is basically “lame”.

As in: “Rangers are so gay.”, or whatever (not meaning that they are actually gay, but that they are a bad class).

I see. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most vile racist homophobic sexist epithet ever uttered by a cis-gendered hetrosexual Caucasian man, what would be its rating?

There are no degrees in this question. Simply offensive or not. This is the former.

Oh dear is the word gay going to be banned in USA made games?

No. Did you actually read anything anyone wrote, or are you just making glib responses regardless?

Gay is not an offensive word. Using it to mean ‘bad, lame’ is offensive.

‘Gay’ to mean ‘homosexual’ is (far and away) the dominant meaning at the moment. It is, more importantly, how a lot of people identify. If you use ‘gay’ to mean ‘bad’, you are being homophobic, because you are equating the two. This is especially true given that that is the exact origin of the gay=bad definition.

It’s the same as using the word ‘Jewish’ to mean ‘greedy, tightfisted’ – as in, “Stop being so Jewish, lend me some money.” It is equally unacceptable.

Your intent in doing so, and your own personal views on LGBT people, are irrelevant. By using ‘gay’ to mean ‘bad,’ you are perpetuating casual homophobia. By defending the usage, knowing that it is offensive…. you reveal a lot about yourself.

Arguing that ‘homosexual’ was not the original meaning of ‘gay’ is also irrelevant, because neither ‘homosexual’ nor ‘cheerful, colorful’ have negative meanings, and there is no possibility of offense.

They word Gay has also been discussed here alot; where I grew up it was still a term that meant ‘happy’. Not Homosexual. But thank you to whoever is responsible for perverting such a nice and innocent word.

Olvendred; I’m not sure I understand what you are saying. Don’t we already have this feature? I’m not talking about following your personal story.

No. Your personal waypoint is a marker you can place anywhere on the map (just click while holding Left Alt). It stays there until you remove it, and it shows at the edge of your minimap in the right direction. However, if you place it in a different zone, it’ll simply show in that compass direction, rather than by route at the portals that will lead you to that zone.

The personal story, on the other hand, does put markers to lead you through portals to the correct zone.

I’m simply suggesting that adding the latter functionality to the personal waypoint might be the easiest way to achieve what you want.

It’s annoying, but you just have to be patient, I’m afraid. Keep in mind that, since the source of the problem has been stopped, this is probably a somewhat low priority in comparison to bugs that are still causing problems. It also only affects a very tiny number of people: those who legitimately have HoM rewards, but have not yet claimed them.

It will get fixed eventually, but don’t expect it to be very soon.

I just found out one of my alt accounts has the Black Widow Spider available for it, in PvP at least. I assume that’s part of the bug also. No titles or the other items though.

The HoM pets have always been available for everyone in PvP.

Really? I remember reading about it at launch and thought it was taken out. I saw posts where people were complaining about it. It seems rather strange I can have a pet in PvP that requires 50/50 in the HoM. Since the pets are cosmetic skins, it seems rather unfair to those that worked for these items for my account that has zero HoM points to be able to use them freely in PvP.

Idk the rationale, but they’ve definitely been unlocked for everyone the whole time.

By comparison, I remember when I bought my first unlimited gathering tool (the molten pick, when it was first out), people calculated that you’d need to use it something like 50,000 times before you started to turn a profit on the unlimited part. I suspect it’s way, way more now… given that gems cost more gold, the item itself costs more (as it was made account bound), and the comparison should rightly be made to the cheapest tools available (being the frostbitten ones, atm).

80 transmutation charges is nothing compared to that. You’d only need to change an entire outfit (7 items, including backpiece) 11 and a half times before you’re starting to make a profit. No way would this be sold for as little as 2k gems.

Comparing to harvesting isn’t really relevant as you can harvest anywhere anytime for free. The only semi comparison that can be made would be to perma merch/bl cost to gem prices. Off top of head i think it is 50 for a 1 time merch/bl and around 250-300 gold for perma version. If you want to do gold/gem conversion by all means. But comparing mining to transmuting doesn’t really make any sense.

Also the reason I settled for 2k rough price is yes it ends up a good deal for those that use lots of skins, but it also gives anet an extra 40% market that will buy them (if pole is accurate). I don’t have access to transmute sales figures only anet does but they “should” be able to do the math to settle on a price. This was just a ballpark cutting the price a bit, yet gaining a larger amount of buyers.

You can’t harvest for free. You need to buy gathering tools. And it’s the best comparison available: unlimited gathering tools are the only unlimited items available to be directly bought from the gemstore. The other unlimited items come from BL chests, meaning their TP price is set by players.

I would have thought that a Charr’s first instinct would be to take control of the troops and lead the battle, not lead the dolyaks to the nearest portal.

Racial stereotyping? Tut tut.

Good ole Evon

Following the destruction of Lion’s Arch, Captain Gnashblade fled to a refugee camp in the northern hills of Gendarran Fields. Under the orders of Captain Kiel, he was conscripted into the Lionguard under General Emergency Statute 14 and forced (along with all other Black Lion Trading Company merchants), to act as a deputy quartermaster for the Lionguard, upon pain of death. Since then, he has blackmailed Heal-o-Tron to act as his spy on the Captain’s Council.

“I thought the candidate who spent the most gold always wins. I was robbed!”

This is supposed to make Evon look bad? All I see is a vengeful political rival abusing extreme governmental powers to harass a civilian.

Your right. Nothing wrong with a little blackmail, vote buying or fleeing a warzone after first making sure all your money and goods gets out with you (and closing the door in the face of panicked civilians). Who could possibly find that distasteful?

Heal-o-tron is a serial traitor and known fugitive. He should be locked up in a Seraph jail, except for the extraordinary (and rather suspicious) action of Magnus and Kiel in granting him sanctuary. I, for one, sleep better at night knowing that an upstanding pillar of the community is keeping an eye on him.

As for vote buying… well, Evon selflessly offered a discount on his own goods in the election. Whereas Kiel, in some shifty behind-the-scenes deal, somehow coerced the Asura into giving discounts on the entire waypoint network. You have to ask yourself… why would the Asura do such a favour for a bookah politician in another city? Again, very suspicious.

Perhaps Evon’s actions during the siege were less than heroic, but one can hardly blame a civilian for that. And it certainly paid off for all of Lion’s Arch. While Kiel and Magnus struggle to perform basic fixes to infrastructure (and flaunt their emergency powers over civilians), the life of LA was only restored in the thriving trading communities that struck up around Black Lion merchants. But for Evon’s wealth, LA would still be a ghost town, populated only by the occasional tired worker fruitlessly hammering on bridges.

:)

As far as I know, it’s not currently available. However, the shoulders from the banded set are almost identical (in fact, I think they are identical. They just sit slightly differently, if that makes sense).

There was a bug with the recent patch that gave people HoM points they weren’t supposed to have. While the bug has been stopped, HoM rewards are disabled until they can revert the gains from people who weren’t supposed to have them.

You can play WvW on two different servers. By which I do not mean spying, but if you have friends/a guild that do WvW on both, or if you enjoy different styles of gameplay that different Tiers can offer.

You can play on NA and EU, if you have friends on both.

Oh, and it gives you extra security against accidentally deleting your bank guilds.
