85% of all skins are just plain ugly

B. Lacking in art design. I know there are some cool looking weapon and armorsets but still it seems like the general consensus is very very ugly vs out of only a handful of good looking skins

Perhaps. But even if such a consensus exists, you’ll find that which of the skins fall into the “good looking” category differs significantly from person to person.

Which is basically the point.

Just loging into a game to get rewards is casual play in my book.

Then you should have over 1,000 Laurels by now if you didn’t spend any. The system is working as intended.

I can’t agree more that the system is working as intended, for casual players yes.

I’m sitting here just waiting for replies because i have nothing more to do at the moment. I’m craving to get into the game and farm those amazing events and world bosses but I have too much of the farmable materials… I just need those laurels but I can’t progress because of the time gates! Please Anet let play your game! I want to swing my sword, play RP and slay those Alien-looking plants in silverwaste but you guys don’t let me progress! :’(

TAKE MY MONEY

Well, no. From what you’re saying you have a self-imposed ‘gate.’ You seem unwilling to go and do anything until you get the ascended gear you want. There’s really nothing stopping you from doing any of the things you want.

I don’t know anyone who’s quit because of time-gating. Certainly plenty who have been annoyed by it from time to time, but not quit because of it (or with it as a main reason).

If you do, it means that there’s something you want… you don’t want to wait to get it… and there’s nothing else in the game holding your interest.

Meaning that usually, the last part is the real reason you quit. You’ve simply lost interest in the game.

I would have to agree. Getting 100 interrupts is too much of a grindfest. Tier 1: 1 interrupt. Tier 2 of achievement: 100?! April is not here yet, so no April Fool’s joke. An extra zero at the end? No, because I’ve gone above 10 interrupts. So it’s simply grind, grind, grind!

Oh boy! If this is any indication of the forecoming new systems in the super-hyped expansion, there will be trouble. Mastery system, wink-wink.

Arguably, achievements are optional (there are 2 sides to this crowd). But, that’s no excuse for the unbalanced amount of the aforementioned achievement. Even within the newly set of achievements for the Dragon Ball activity, the “Dragon’s Gaze” achieve is out of order.

Did Anet even have someone or anyone, sit down, and play the game? A process known as testing the game. Perhaps the content wasn’t as important as to whether it works or not. Almost as if the 2 week mark to release new stuff came right around the corner, and they did a rush job to push out this tiny amount of content. But, to make it last longer, the traditional answer to mmorpg: grind.

Inb4 the ‘YOU DON’T NEED™ IT SO IT ISN’T GRIND, YOU JUST WANT IT, ITS YOUR FAULT IF YOU MAKE IT A GRIND’ harpies descend.

Putting an opposing argument in capital letters and calling people harpies doesn’t make it wrong. People have to learn that if they’re not enjoying doing something in-game, that’s a good time to stop doing that thing and do something else they enjoy better.

In this case, though, I admit I do have to wonder why anybody would want to do that achievement.

Outfits have their own special slot, and their own special tab in your wardrobe. When you equip an outfit, it takes over the whole appearance of your gear. You won’t be able to see any of your armour pieces, but they will still be there applying their stats. The outfit is purely cosmetic. The benefit of outfits is that you can equip them forever without using transmutation charges. The downside is that they offer much fewer options in terms of customizing your look. For these reasons, a lot of people use them while levelling, since you replace your armour quite often.

Skins are applied directly to your armour. Using a transmutation charge, you can change what each piece of your armour looks like. The piece of armour will stay looking like that until you change it again… but if you get a new piece of armour, that piece will have its own appearance unless you change it. Since you can mix and match whatever armour skins you like, for each piece of armour (in that weight class – light, medium, or heavy), you can make a unique look for yourself if you want to.

Armour is the actual objects you put in your slots. These are what give you your stats and protection.

As you say, the situation you’re talking about is very old. I don’t recall exactly when activities were put into the rotation, but I’m pretty sure it was late 2013. People are willing to try things out, but most generally don’t stick around forever. The few that do are mostly just grinding achievements.

Keg Brawl wasn’t removed altogether, it was put into a predictable schedule. If you know about activities, you know Keg Brawl is on Sundays (or Saturdays or Mondays, if it’s different for other timezones). And it’s still hard to find games… despite that it’s only there one day per week… despite that it’s much better advertised in the centre of LA than in a corner of Hoelbrak… despite that it’s the only activity people can play that day… despite that it’s the weekend, when player numbers are generally higher.

The unfortunate fact remains that people generally don’t seem interested in activities, or if they do, it’s only for small amounts of time or rare occasions. Having the daily rotation was not about making things better, it was about trying to limit the effects of decline.

[Suggestion] Color Blind Mode (merged)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

I may sound quite ignorant on this, but which colours are causing such problems? To my knowledge, white and red are not ever confused, and those are the most important ones. I can see the green friendly versus the red snarlies might be a problem, but the fact that the snarlies attack you while the green do not should be a hint which ones you need to hit.

Now that I say all that, I do recall a few instances where the enemy names are in green until a certain point and then they turn red, but in those cases they usually say something to indicate they are about to attack. When they do swap, they pause for about a second before taking that action. Is that delay not long enough to know you need to attack them then?

Note: Please don’t read into my language as being sarcastic or nasty. I genuinely don’t see the colour choices being confusing enough that a colourblind mode is needed, but if a good example or two is presented, I can definitely change my position.

As I understand it, it’s more to do with thin red lines on green terrain becoming invisible.

The stealth mission requires that you not get detected for the entire instance. So a challenge mote for it would have to reset you back to the very beginning of the instance… which is close enough to leaving it and entering again, minus only a couple of minutes of stuff at the beginning (talk to Marjory and then Faolain).

Also, a challenge mote usually requires you to finish the fight you’re on, before it can be used. In that sense, it’s quicker (or not much slower) just to restart the instance the moment you screw up, rather than spending the time to finish killing Vorpp.

Basically, it wasn’t removed, but the access to it got severely restricted for no good reason.

For a good reason, actually, as Vayne said. If there’s only one activity available per day, then all the people who want to do activities are doing that activity, rather than being spread out over several of them. Granted, not many people do activities anyway… it worked a lot better when Daily Activity was a daily every day. But at least you can join in and actually have a game start, most of the time.

I started playing GW1 about 8 months ago. I play it in bursts when I feel like it, towards the general goal of getting HoM points.

It definitely does enhance your experience of GW2 to have played both, since you pick up on all sorts of lore and references you wouldn’t otherwise have noticed. And the way they’ve done some of those things can be pretty cool. Notably in some of the recent LS chapters, but often just in the open world.

When GW1 players start waxing lyrical about the gameplay/mechanics/builds/etc of GW1, though, things are open to disagreement. While it does play well for a game of its age, I massively prefer how almost everything is done in GW2.

Be careful before accusing people of scams, and trying to make money from their guides. I’ve looked at the guide, and it looks like what you would have expected from a crafting guide a couple of years ago, before people found more cost-efficient means of crafting. It’s also probably based on prices at that time. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were simply out of date.

Isn’t it weird that only intended ingredients are overpriced, that are on the list?:)

Judging from the date of the comments, the guide was made by February 2013 (though may have been modified later). The ascended armour patch didn’t come until December 2013, and that was when the prices of cloth (especially linen. And wool and cotton) shot through the roof.

Solo-Instance for Dungeons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

I’ve never run into much (if any) toxicity using the LFG tool. And GW2 is probably the easiest MMO ever to find groups, and quickly… for pretty much anyone, using any build.

The reason more parties might seem to say “zerk only” or “speedrun” or whatever, is because those are the fastest to fill up. When I post my own parties without requirements, or saying ‘all welcome’, they fill up very quickly. Even for slower/less popular paths.

In any case, dungeons are meant as group content. That is pretty much half their definition in GW2: “instances, for a party of 5.” There’s tons of stuff to do otherwise, if you want to solo.

What is the game for the casual player?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

This game is extremely casual friendly. The skill threshold required for almost all content is extremely low. Which is the problem, really… a lot of players are able to coast along on extremely easy content for most of their game time, if they want, without learning their class or how to adjust their build or how to react to new mechanics, and so forth.

What the LS has been doing recently, is upping the difficulty level just a bit. Not very much, but enough to nudge the casual player to get better. HoT will have content that continues in that general direction. All the LS instances are perfectly soloable, though, on every class and on a wide variety of builds.

To the OP, I won’t say l2p… I won’t even tell you to keep butting your head against whatever encounter is giving you trouble, cause that’s just boring and frustrating… but if you do keep playing and allow yourself to be challenged in different ways from time to time, you will get better. And you’ll find encounters like those in the LS to be enjoyable, rather than frustrating.

Cant salvage this armor? What is it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Olvendred.3027

Armor obtained through Karma merchants usually is not salvageable.

All karma weapons/armor aren’t salvageable and if they are it is considered a banable exploit.

just curious: why the kitten do they have something against salvageing those items?

i paid for them ingame, after all. anet really doesnt want to give you anything remotely useful for karma, it seems.

Because there’s such a massive profusion of karma and BoH’s in peoples’ wallets. If karma gear or WvW gear could be salvagable normally, then the price of ectos and all other mats you can get from salvaging (all tiers of wood, cloth, metal, etc) would collapse overnight. It would be bad for the economy.

A way of salvaging the gear just for upgrades but not anything else has been requested in the past, but so far, has not been introduced.

Ranger Wolf Pet

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

All the canine pets have the exact same skills and stats, except for the special skill (F2). The knockdown (Brutal Charge) is not one of the special skills, meaning you can equip any of the other 4 canine pets, and still get it. Or 2 of them, if you so desire. Which will have special skills that are actually useful in PvE, too.

Yes, but the fear AoE is in the same camp. For every second the mob is feared, it’s not attacking. In a pinch, this can make all the difference. Even in PvE.

Not with Fear. Fear is very bad in PvE, most of the time. Yes, popping F2 on a wolf will CC the mobs (for 2 whole seconds), but this will considerably hinder your efforts to actually kill the enemy mobs. You see, GW2 is all about AoE (this includes AoE from melee weapons, or piercing projectiles, etc. Anything that hits multiple enemies). That’s the main reason why people stack around a corner in dungeons – it’s to get all the mobs into one place, so they can all the AoE’d together. When mobs are spread out all over the place, they’re able to all attack you independently, while you can only kill one of two at a time. Meaning the fight lasts longer, with you suffering a lot more damage.

What Fear does to groups of mobs, is make them split up. Instead of a nice group you can AoE all at once, you have mobs in five different places that have to be taken down one by one. It slows you down massively and, in a difficult fight, could kill you.

That’s why I’m saying Fear is bad in PvE. It’s not merely sub-optimal. It’s actively counter-productive.

No such thing as tanks or healers in this game. And guard is quite desirable for dungeons/fractals, as far as I know.

One of my guildmembers asked me a day ago ‘How do I join a group in the LFG? Everytime I join for a dungeon I get kicked’ I noticed he was level 37 and wanted to join a AC Explorer… I told him ’PUG’s are stupid’ and I gathered a group from our guild and we did one AC explorer in 20 min with Level 80 Guardian, a Level 36 Engineer, a Level 80 Necro (MM at that), Level 37 Ranger and a level 60 Guardian. People have got some things so wrong about this game that it is frightning… But my advice is, join a kind guild that is not all about farming and doing speedruns and stuff and you can be whatever class you want to be. In my opinion no class is so bad that it does not deserve a spot in a group. What can ruin a run is a bad player but even so it wouldn’t hinder you from joining a group. Me for example I rather have new players than Elite players in my groups.

Most people expect lvl 80s in dungeon groups. Especially since the trait revamp. I don’t see that as particularly elitist.

Ascended gear grind is OTT ridiculous

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

Ascended weapons are pretty cheap. It’s only the armour that’s particularly costly.

And most complaints about ascended mats (bloodstone dust, empyreal fragments, dragonite ore), for the past year or two, are about having far, far too many of them and no way to get rid of them. Keep playing 6 months and you’ll feel exactly the same way. If you do want to get lots quickly but don’t like world bosses, try the train in EotM. I seem to get a lot from the Silverwastes too.

Also, if you want to bypass time-gating, you can buy the final part off the TP. As in, Lumps of Mithrillium are time-gated, but are used to make Deldrimor Steel Ingots, and the latter is tradable. Same of the equivalents in wood, cloth and leather.

In any case, ascended gear is meant as a long term goal. Don’t stress so much, especially if you don’t play very much, and are trying for a large number of things all at once.

They’ve got a playerbase accustomed to pretty regular doses of new stuff to do. And there’s at least several months until HoT, with no Living Story. The logical thing to do is have a few festivals or other minor updates, like the restoration of LA, which don’t impact the Mordremoth story much.

"Skill Grind" Can Be Worse Than "Gear Grind"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

The difference? Gear grind requires replacement. You grind out the gear you need, then the level cap changes/new gear tiers are added, and your gear becomes obsolete. You have to grind for gear again. Once new BiS gear is there, your old BiS gear is no longer BiS… so you just throw it away.

This might or might not be relevant in GW2 where you can salvage, buy and sell stuff. GW2 is different from other games in many aspects.

Adding skills, traits or masteries, at least in GW2, is just that. Adding. You never have to replace anything. All your skills remain just as relevant, and keep the same functionality, as long as you keep playing the game.

You never know until you see them. For one, specialisations will replace some of your mechanics.

We do need to wait for details. But certainly I can’t envision a scenario where salvaging something would give you anything more than a single component of a higher tier of gear… and even if you did salvage, what are you going to wear while you get the other components? As for buying/selling… in most games, the moment new gear comes out, the old gear becomes much less valuable.

Specialisations will replace some mechanics, but you can always swap back. The current assumption is that different specialisations (including the “base class” specialisation) will be relatively balanced against each other, though with different focuses. So, while there are some situations where it might be better to be a Druid, there are others where it would still be better to be a Ranger. Just like swapping weapons removes some skills and replaces them with others… it doesn’t mean the first weapon’s skills have become obsolete.

Do I have to explain ‘optional’ to you again? Achievements are just that, and the LS ones are among the least grindy. Not an example of skills, grind, or anything even remotely relevant to your topic.

That was an example of the direction the game is heading, especially since they’re referencing DT and SW stuff as the most similar existing models.

As for validity of “optional” in a game where cosmetics are the endgame, see many other posts throughout the forum.

I think you know I’m going to disagree with those posts. There’s a wide variety of different skins, attainable by a wide variety of different means. I’d accept that players should get some skins, but not that they are driven to get all of them or any specific ones.

my account is one of the statistical outliers on the luck spectrum

Everyone thinks that. Chances are, you’re not.

I am.

Because you have compiled full data of your own drops, including exactly where you got all of them, and have compared it to a large amount of other players’? Or just because you say so?

As I said, everyone thinks they’re a statistical outlier. Either they’ve been extremely lucky, in which case they think they’re an outlier on the ‘top’ side of the spectrum. Or they haven’t been quite as lucky as the people on the extreme ‘top’ side of the spectrum, in which case they think they must actually on the extreme ‘bottom’ side of the spectrum.

Assume everything new will require HoT to play, unless specifically told otherwise.

The only thing I can definitely see as being free for everyone is the new WvW map, and only because they can’t shut off an entire game mode for people while it’s on in the rotation.
