Anet clearly knows that some will have difficulty with this mini-game, hence the announcement at the entrance which touts its predilection for the “musically inclined,”

You’re reading far too much into that.

With the achievement behind me, I am left to wonder why Anet hasn’t bothered to do a few VERY simple things which could have made this so much more workable for those like me who are Bell Choir challenged. Why not have a lower level of the game with numbers on the wheel so that people can better visualize which orb is on which slat? Why not give more leeway for people to press the button so that the orb doesn’t need to be just past the white line for the key press to count (a tiny leeway for lag would be nice)? Why not allow people to choose between low, mid and upper range songs as they see fit so they can actually get to know the game easier and maybe make them want to get better and then move to something more challenging? Tutorials with lower difficulty are a huge part of multiple other parts of this game, so why not have a lower difficulty/lower reward level for those who have far less than Mozart level key proficiency? Mini-games with multiple levels were used back in GW1 (e.g. Rings of Fortune vs. 9 Rings), so why not here?

There’s a pretty good amount of leeway, actually. At least that I’ve found. I press groupings of notes differently to notes that come on their own, such that my exact timing per note is quite different, and it still gives me credit.

You can choose between low, middle and upper. That exists.

The game itself is a tutorial. The first couple of songs are easy, with only about 12 notes in the entire song, with large gaps between them. Then there are two medium songs, which are a bit harder, then there are 2 “hard” songs, which are a bit harder yet, but still stop several thousand orders of magnitude below “Mozart key level proficiency.”

Adding new rewards for playing a completely different game is probably not a priority at Anet.

~massive wall of text~

Just fyi. The changes to the trait system are not part of the NPE. They were in a completely different feature patch, 6 months beforehand.

did you read that i summed up my whole experience in leveling\playing and that the trait changes came before the npe and i actually prefered the trait changes over the NPE? Cause thats practially what i wanted to bring across.

Not really, no. You started a giant paragraph with “NPE is bad” and then there was a lot of stuff about traits in there.

But thanks for clarifying

I don’t have any particular suggestions that haven’t already been said, but I do think that there should be a much wider pool for the new dailies. Since they’re more specific, there should be a lot more, which allows for a certain spice of variety each day.

I can see one possible problem with this idea. It would split up people who normally do dailies together, sending one to one map and one to another. They would either need to start doing them alone or do each person’s set of events together however many times it takes, depending on the group size. Region wide would disperse the zerg while allowing them to play together.

From experience in the old dailies, I don’t think region-wide does disperse the zerg. If there used to be an Ascalonian Events daily, you could go to really obvious places in Fireheart or Blazeridge where there are lots of events, and there’d be no one there at all. I didn’t exactly go looking for zergs at the time, but I suspect they were mostly in the lower level zones.

I guess you do have a point about splitting people up. They could maybe base the “randomisation” on home server… BG players get Snowdon, TC get Fireheart, DH get Brisban, and so on. And then rotate through each day. That would minimise the problem, though it wouldn’t remove it.

How is regions to general but splitting what maps you’re sending players to not too general? There are a lot of players, and each region only has 4 or 5 maps.

Because a region is bigger than a single zone? Obviously it’s more general. Randomised zones would still be one specific zone that each player has to do each day.

Remember, part of the idea of these dailies is to encourage players to go places they wouldn’t usually go. Making it region-wide lets you choose your usual/favourite place in an entire region, and then keep going back there each time that daily comes up.

I think regions would be too general, considering that is one of the ‘harder’ 2 achievements (each category has 2 ‘easier’ and 2 ‘harder’ achievements).

The better idea I’ve seen is that the map should be randomised for all players. So instead of everyone having Snowdon, some people have it, others have Wayfarers, other have Straits of Devastation, etc.

Um. But yeah. What do you want players to do? Play less effective builds? Play builds that are harder to play effectively? Even if players did all make their own builds, chances are the better theory-crafters would move towards a similar meta anyway, because that’s what’s effective in the current game.

From your list, you’ll want to play anything but mesmer, basically.

You might enjoy ranger, I think. It’s very easy and straightforward to use, and you get a free tank/extra dps in your pet. It’s not particularly in demand for high-end PvE, but you’ll be fine in pug groups in dungeons. If you’re not doing dungeons at all, then no one will care.

Take example the daily event, today was Gandarent Field or whatever, went there and sooooooo many people were there, everytime i try to do an event i get there its finished already! took me like 1 hour and half just to get 4 events done, cos i couldn’t find any!!!! they were either done when i get there or bugged……. this system is terrible! it felt like there’s hardly any events going on! and 4 events shouldn’t take 1 hour and half to complete!

What Subdue said. Do a different daily. Exotic crafter is insanely easy, cheap and profitable.

If they’re all “too hard” for you, don’t complete your daily at all. It’s 100% optional, and only rewards 10 AP.

Play how you want. Make your own choices. Don’t blame the game if you can’t.

It was mildly annoying. the prize is mostly worth it for me, but really wish there were other ways of acquiring the toy minis next year than the one-shot Meta.

You can get the toy minis from the final reward in the PvP reward track, as well.

Hmm.

More speaking of how in the first year there was the events which rotated through the towns before settling on Lion’s Arch, where you would win Stuffing, Cogs, and Glue to make the miniatures. I don’t quite know why this was abandoned.

Well, the events rotating through the towns were abandoned because they were very slight variations on the same thing. Even then, there was only supposed to be enough Cogs to get you 2 of the minis, I think.

More Modern Pistol Skins!

The game has tanks, helicopters, robots, mecha, autopistols with a rate of fire that put modern submachineguns to shame, and more….

More modern looking firearm skins are not all that out of place.

This argument might hold water if the tanks or helicopters or robots looked even remotely like modern tanks or helicopters or robots.

Or if mecha weren’t entirely from science fiction, and therefore not “modern.”

Or if any of the pistols in game could fire at 700+ rounds/min. Not that rate of fire really has anything to do with skins.

Has anyone else observed that nodes in the “target” region for the gathering task seem to be sparser than when that type of mat is not the target? For instance, I went to Lornar’s Pass today to do Shiverpeaks Miner. Plenty of vegetables and trees, only found two nodes, 1 Iron, 1 Silver, in about 25 minutes of wandering. Went to Timberline to find the other two nodes. Normally, there are 3 nodes near Fort Concordia, today 1.

Nope. It’s probably just one of those things – it seems harder to find something you’re looking for.

Anyone find it ironic how the “play what I want” folks cry when their checklist gets nerfed?

No, because when your number of choices are lessened, you are less able to play as you want.

Please list for me the activities you’re no longer able to do because of the patch.

That’s actually quite easy to answer. Let’s say player Bob only has 45 minutes or so to play each day. Before the patch he could go anywhere in the world, have nodes to gather, mobs/players to put conditions on, mobs’/players’ attacks to dodge, events to complete etc. So Bob could do whatever he liked, Bob could have an enjoyable 45 minute gaming session.

Post patch, Bob has to use most of that time going to specific places if he’d like to complete the daily. After racing around metrica province hoping to score a hit on some mobs before the other 20 people kill the low level mobs, searching for gathering nodes in another zone.. and oh.. 2 fractal dailies!? Okay.. gotta find something else to fill in that last daily completion. Well, there’s the majority of Bob’s gaming session done and poor Bob didn’t get to do what he’d normally do (no dungeons or a few world bosses for example) and didn’t have that satisfying of a time in GW2 today.

Hypothetical but completely realistic situation for those gamers with less time to log in. (This isn’t my situation, but I’m able to have empathy for those who are in such a situation.)

You underestimate Bob.

Post patch, Bob happily collects some rewards just from logging in. He looks at the dailies and thinks, “Do I really care about the 10 AP today? I have an extremely limited play time, so AP isn’t something that interests me very much.” Bob then goes and actually does what he wants, without being sidetracked by having to find 10 dead NPCs, or finding mobs that actually inflict conditions in the start zone he’s in, or having to bother dodging mob attacks that do negligible damage and can be easily tanked, or having to equip a weapon set with a bunch of interrupts and then waiting on the cooldowns and slowly hoping to get 15 rather than just killing the mobs, or having to find some water and kill mobs there, or having to stop every few seconds to gather things he’d much rather just run past, or having to go back to the vendor to buy more salvage kits, or having to find a jumping puzzle and try and get to the end of it, or having to leave the high level zone he’s in to get some events to mentor, or having to do events at all when he really just wants to do map completion things, or having to find two different group events and waiting for other players to come and help him, or, heaven forbid, actually having to group up to do a dungeon or fractals.

Bob seems a lot happier to me.

The old dailies were terrible for “play how you want.” Their only advantage was in “play where you want.”

Are you seriously claiming that a daily panel, almost as big as the screen, that you can’t not see if you want to get rid of the trembling little treasure chest in the bottom right of the screen, is not tremendously annoying active encouragement? It’s the equivalent of putting a big greasy hamburger in front a vegan while he’s having dinner, every day, going: “eat it and I’ll give you 10 bucks. Or you could come over to my place and clean the toilet. 10 bucks in it for you.”

Click chest. Click ‘accept’ (or whatever the button is). Click ‘ok’.

3 clicks and it’s gone.

Only between the second and third clicks is there any mention of dailies.

Currently the Bell Choir daily says “participate” which is incorrect. I have “participated” in many Bell Choir events but never completed one song. I realize that people don’t understand how some people can fail to complete even the very first song but for some reason I have never done it. (Been playing since Beta.). Idk if it is my connection or what but I follow the instructions and it still never works for me.

Yes, I have tried this year like every year hoping that something has been changed so I can do it. And in previous years I had a different computer and a different ISP.

Suffice it to say that requiring either the Bell Choir or the JP means I will not complete any Festival dailies.

Try hitting the notes later. A lot of people who have problems are simple hitting too early. You want to hit them as they get to the very inside blue circle, just as they disappear.

Yea, I’ve tried waiting until they are fully within the blue at my feet but it still doesn’t work. And I don’t want this to turn in to a tutorial on the Bell Choir – that isn’t the point. Thanks though.

I just heard in map chat that when you stay within the area of the bell choir for all 6 songs (or until the end of the event) you get credited for participation, even without staying on one of the platforms.

I suspect that’s for the Daily Activity daily, where you do get credit for being in any activity when it ends. You do need to do one song for the bell choir daily in the wintersday category.

Obviously there’s the perennial problem that you can’t join activities with friends, and wintersday does have more activities than any other festival. That complaint is fair enough.

Do you genuinely feel as if PvE needs fewer choices to be in line with WvW/PvP? I am just really struggling with what people are even defending, at this point. Are you saying that there hasn’t been a distinct trend toward a more rigid structure to the GW2 PvE experience in the last year?

I haven’t felt compelled to do anything particular in PvE for a long time. I just do what I feel like.

Admittedly, I haven’t made a new toon since the trait revamp, and that is a horribly restrictive change I’ll agree. But only because, in one way or another, you do have to get your traits if you want a fully functional character.

But all of the rest is just perception, really. People feel compelled to do things, because they feel compelled to do things.

I don’t think it would be too much to ask to change the “complete” in both cases to “attempt”. I would hope OP and others would at least agree to put in that bit of effort if anything ever came out of this.

How would you define “attempt”? Go into the activity and stand around for a minute? The game can’t tell the difference whether you’ve done that, or actually made some effort to succeed.

Why does it need to? If hitting one single autoattack at one boss in the Silverwastes is enough to get 30+ bandit crests, an organ, 3 rares, and a Greater Nightmare Key, why does the game need to be an “enforcer” for Wintersday events?

You need to do sufficient damage to the boss to get kill credit, and the boss needs to actually die. Not to mention that you have to get to the right place at the right time. And to get the organ, you need to have the organ gathering buff on. And to get the full 3 rares and the Key, you need to be on a map where all the bosses are killed.

While it is possible to ‘leech’ some rewards for little effort in that instance, you still have to be part of a group effort where a lot is actually achieved. It isn’t a valid comparison to ‘logging into a solo activity and doing absolutely nothing.’

In any case, the Bell Choir daily only requires you to survive one song. Not be perfect, or even do well. Just survive to the end of one song. On the easy songs, that means hitting about 4 notes.

The problem in this thread is that players have been trained over the last couple of years to have to do dailies. Now the dailies have moved to a much more rational system, where you get AP only for doing specific tasks (this is what AP should be be for), which are entirely optional (as, again, all achievements should be).

We just need to re-train the players not to feel they need to do dailies. Since they don’t. Unless they think it’s worth it.

The ones clamoring about how the new dailies “reduce their freedom of choice,” are the ones who refuse to make their own choices. For some reason, a vast number of players seem to feel compelled to follow the checklist that appears on their screen. They removed all the rewards but AP from dailies, for the purpose of giving you the choice which you refuse to take.

Look, if you don’t want to want to do dailies, then that’s fine. Just respect that some of us do want to want to do dailies, just not these dailies. I enjoyed the old dailies for their little bonus credit for playing. Maybe I spend a bit more effort on reviving, or on getting interrupts, or on dodging, and get a tiny reward for doing so.

And with the new dailies, yes, the meta only awards AP, but it does still award AP, so it’s not nothing. And each individual daily awards bonus rewards, bonus mats, bonus rare items, this isn’t nothing either, but you only get it if you jump through their specific hoops, rather than by engaging in the activities that might be more convenient for you.

Now again, you might not care about any of this, and that’s great, you’re doing just fine. Just respect that other people might feel differently than you, and they aren’t wrong for doing so.

Why do you want to do dailies at all? You want to be able to do them without going out of your way (more than a minimal amount, anyway). But you still want to have a checklist for some reason?

WvW and PvP is open to everyone. You have however CHOSEN to not do them. That is not the games fault. It is yours. YOU decide to limit yourself.

Cos as people have said time and time again, we don’t want to do content we hate. Do you want to do content you hate? No? Then please take your fallacious argument out to the pretentiousness dump where it belongs, kthxbai.

Today, instead of the 2 dailies in Fractals, my alt account has Maguuma Vista Viewer and Shadow Behemoth.

This is a perfect example of restricted choice, the whole reason behind this thread. It’s not a feature. This is ANet trying to force people to do moldy old content many people have no interest in doing to inflate metrics and say ‘see? see? people play all our content!’

I got the point. I was merely pointing out that it had benefits as well.

Totally agree. As someone who would rather do anything than waste time in fractals (chances of me finishing three in a row to go up a level, zero), having two out of four for that rubbish place just feels a bit to much like a none too subtle push.

It’s a teething problem with the rotation. I would be surprised if it were intended. The fact that there are issues with the details of the system doesn’t mean the system itself is bad.

Also, you only have to do a single fractal for the Daily Fractal one, rather than 3 in a row.

Get daily in 10 mins on your lvl 80 (if you think daily is important). Then play alt.

It’s not complicated.

It can be, if (like myself) their play time is currently pretty limited. I barely have time to log in, do some minor things, then log out on most days.

I blame the fact I need to work for like 10 hours tomorrow . . . and 8 more the day after that, and follow that up with another 8 hours . . . and yet more 8 hour shifts, not getting a truly open day until Monday.

Therefore, I really have to get on with the intent to do something and hope I have luck doing it.

But you can do 3 of the new dailies faster than you could ever do 5 of the old ones.

Just tried to play my level 17 alt and ended up in a bad mood because there is no way for me to complete the daily events without bringing on my level 80.

I had bought 12 alt slots a few months ago envisioning all sorts of adventure and fun raising them. Now I am experiencing the difference in game quality between my alt and a new account’s lowbie toon, who may be standing right next to me. He’ll get a normal life leveling up, while I get to wish my level 80 can help me do the daily.

The thought haunts me to the point I can’t stand playing my current alt now. Let alone level up the other alts waiting in the wings.

What’s astounding to me is the lack of consideration for revenue in this new daily plan. Does GW2 not want to sell extra character slots? Is it Anet’s intention to make players regret having invested in 12 alt slots? And I truly regret having invested in 12 alt slots.

What about gem purchase I may make for my alts?

To me it indicated a lack in QA, potentially caused by ignorance of both the producer and developer. These kind of things will hit revenue, yet the change went ahead with it, as if the company is oblivious to potential hits on revenue.

I had seen how NCSoft mismanaged Aion. I’m venting here… :p I thought Anet was a shiny beam of innovation. What happened? Any MMORPG should support alt fun.

For a long time I thought I found a home in GW2. Ever since its launch I was happy. Putting away bad memories of other mmorpgs. Think I’m going to take a wait and watch stance now.

I’m jaded. A part of me still love the game, but I’m on high alert. More things like this… may spell downfall ahead.

Get daily in 10 mins on your lvl 80 (if you think daily is important). Then play alt.

It’s not complicated.

The Wintersday 2012 minis were behind gemstore RNG, so if it is re-released, it’ll possibly be in a raffle, like the Halloween 2012 skins were.

It’s possible you’ve been hitting the notes too early anyway. Try hitting them later.

I miss Ambient Killer. That was my single most favorite daily.

I felt really really guilty about that one. Who smites bunnies?

Monty Pyton?

Well, that rabbit had a vicious streak a mile wide! It was a killer! Honestly, what could one do in that case?

On the other hand, Tyrian bunnies are a lot friendlier, cuter, and cuddlier, which makes taking them out a little guilt-inducing.

But it’ll be so much fun when the flying bunnies update comes out!

The flaw with your argument is that it assumes this is all-or-nothing. You think players will either max out the AP, or not do any at all. It’s perfectly plausible for a casual player to complete one or two iterations in one activity. Or maybe one iteration in a couple of activities.

As I said before, the achievements are meant to be infinite. The AP cap is high enough to simulate infinity, for the average player. But there is a cap, because otherwise a tiny segment of the population would attempt to take advantage of it, if there weren’t.

Well actually, said people that only play them to have fun get bonus rewards anyway, and that happens anyway once you reach the AP cap for the respective achievement, so that argument is fairly irrelevant.

The point is, last year had the same repeatable achievements, but they wern’t absolutely ridiculous like they are this year.

Did you also notice that last year, when the repeatable achievements were more easily achievable, that far more people attempted them… and then far more people complained about how grindy and difficult they were? This year, most people have taken one look and said “lol, nope. I’m not doing all of them.” And so there’s barely been any complaining.

The bonus rewards are 3 presents, which are a fairly minimal reward. Nothing wrong with accompanying that with a fairly minimal amount of AP, imo. Remember, these are meant to be infinite, meaning you never get to the end of the achievement. The only reason the AP is maxed, is that if it weren’t, some players would try and grind out 10k AP during Wintersday. So they set the AP cap at a point higher than any reasonable player would reach… but they do set a cap.

And if the achievements have an AP cap, does that not mean the AP part of it actually is about the achievement hunters? Your opinion is just parroted off other people, who also don’t really know what they’re talking about and just white knight anything they possibly can.

My opinion is my own, arrived at independently. If I come on the forums and find that other people share it, I don’t have a problem with that. I could easily suggest you were parroting arguments from “haters”, who equally don’t know what they’re talking about and complain about everything instead. Pretty pointless thing to start, really.

If the people that enjoy doing it actually do, then they wouldn’t ask for a bonus reward in the first place as that’s not what they’re playing it for. So, once again, the argument is invalid.

No. Achievement points are perfectly acceptable as a bonus reward. It’s only players who feel the unreasonable compulsion to complete every last one of them, no matter how long it takes, who would even think about doing the infinite achievements so many iterations (note how few posters are complaining about this, compared to the number of people complaining about, say, how difficult Bell Choir is), who think it’s a grind.

Stating an argument is invalid does not make it so.
