Taunts don’t last long in WoW either. From what I remember they last only 1 second in WoW.

Is the duration and name of the effect really having people tripping this much? Lol.

I think it’s the name. They really needed to call it something like “Provoke” or “Enrage”.

And it’s not just real life. Before MMOs, did you read any fiction where a warrior could literally force a target to attack him over his party with just a nonmagical word?

Usually, it takes the form of “Stand aside. He/She is mine!”, but yes. A character becoming so enraged that they focus on just one opponent isn’t anything new to MMOs, just the mechanics of how it’s presented.

I’m pretty sure that Revenants will be able to use mainhand sword, as well. We’ve seen Rytlock using one, and if we’re learning from him, it would make no sense for us to not know how to use one ourselves.

Also, there are few weapons more iconic and fitting to referencing legends than the sword.

  1. Lock legend skills to their respective legends, but include a handful of non-legend skills. Aside from racial skills and Antitoxin Spray, the revenant would get a smattering of skills that aren’t bound to a specific legend, and can be swapped into any legend’s bar freely. These would have to be generic and useful for all legends, such as simple resource maintenance.
    1. I recommend creating a skill type based on minor legends. The historical characters that aren’t quite big enough be a proper legend can each get a single skill named and themed after them. These could additionally provide an attribute bonus when slotted, sort of like a signet that doesn’t deactivate. Seriously, who wouldn’t want a “Channel Prof. Yakkington” skill on their bar?

I like this idea, and it makes a lot of sense. “Crest of Durmand”, “Crest of Havocbringer”, and “Crest of Silverwing” as skill names, for example.

I really, STRONGLY hope they change the name to “Provoke”.

“Taunt” might be technically more accurate, but in many MMOs that word means something specific. So using it here has a result of less accuracy, not more.

Sorry, my wording was bad on the Resistance question. What I’m wondering is whether Resistance will put Conditions on hold, or simply make you immune to them, it’s really hard to tell from the wording.

It seemed clear to me. Basically, the conditions continue to run, but Resistance negates the effects while it’s up.

I don’t know how many legends will be there but if every one of them is different in playstyle (conditions, power, hybrid) this is going to cost a lot for armors, trinkets and weapons, except if you go hybrid. I think it’ll cost too much, hope not.

No, I think you’re about right about how it will work.

They noted that when you change to the other of your two legends, you’ll be at 50% power. I think the intent is that, in a long and difficult battle, you’ll HAVE to switch sooner or later because you’ll burn energy faster than you can rebuild it. So, you switch legends to get back up to 50%, but now the playstyle switches some too.

This might be a class where running full out ’zerker is actually less than optimal, because staying in that skill set will require holding back and not hitting as hard and as fast as you can.

… maybe. We’ll have to wait and see.

Lets talk about the new boon: Resistance

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

I see it as a good thing.

They can give it to NPCs as a buff, making it much harder to harm them. (Let’s face it, even Berserkers tend to do conditions such as bleeds and cripple.) Even Vulnerability and Weakness will be countered by this, or so it seems to me.

What does that mean? It means that, for fights against things that can do this, a way to remove this boon just became VERY useful. It also means that any enemy NPC that puts this on their allies during battle becomes a VIP to RIP. (Imagine a corrupted sylvari spamming this buff on a bunch of husks.)

IF the devs use it well, this could make fights more interesting, without being an instant “I win” for anyone. If nothing else, it should make boon stripping more important.

They’ve heavily suggested that Masteries (stated to unlock at 80) and Specializations are linked, but that might be us reading too much into it.

Even if they are linked, Masteries are account-wide, right? It’s possible that you need a level 80 to unlock it, but can then use it on a lower level character of the same class? We don’t know yet, we need (a lot) more information.

F2 skill is centered on the Ranger and puts all nearby enemies to sleep for 5 seconds or until hit.

Letting us sell them is the easy answer, but it’s also the boring one.

I’d like to see something done with them, something interesting.

Here’s one idea: Mystic Forge 3 Exotic EoLs and one Flying Cow Token to get a “Bag of Fortune”.

Bag of Fortune: Double click this item to place a Bag of Fortune on the ground. Doing so puts a “Generous Giver” effect on the user. A few seconds later, the bag explodes out in a shower of coins and glitter, giving everyone without the “Generous Giver” status that’s within the AoE a random amount of coins, karma, or exp.

Stuff like that, basically. Though, not always relying on something as annoying to get as the Flying Cow Token.

That’s a pretty huge jump in logic.

They’re a waste of dev time if nobody ever bothers with them. The cost of materials doesn’t matter, it’s how often that content is used.

Not many events are far from waypoints if they succeed, come to think of it. Shouldn’t be as much of an issue – I think the champ or rare-loot"Steel Chests" which drop linger for five minutes?

Actually, that brings up a good question: How long DO you have to get back to a fight and claim your rewards after the event ends?

Though, what I should have said is that I kind of worry that I’ll be far enough away that it’ll forget that I was in that fight unless I make it back by the end. Which, now that I think about it, is stupid of me. I’ve WP’ed across a map before, then had an event I tagged before the jump complete and reward me many times.

What if, at world boss events, some NPC would throw up a “temporary waypoint” right before it starts? That way, you have to be there to tag the waypoint to use it, so there’s no just jumping right to the fight if it’s in a more remote location. But it also allows you to get right back into the action if you’re willing to pay the WP fees.

After the event, the waypoint is taken down or breaks, so you have to re-tag it if you want to use it the next time.

I know some people don’t WP due to the costs, but I often find myself wondering “can I make it back in time if I WP?” I worry that I won’t, and miss out on the reward I was trying so hard for. Yes, in most places that’s not really an issue, but in some the nearest WP is far enough away that I do worry, especially if the fight is nearly over.

Yes, they do a lot of the work themselves, even if I’m not in the area at that point. But, there’s only so much they can do, and they never get better at it. I’ve had players that know what they’re doing just rip through them (and me), or just get past them and rip me to shreds before I know I’m in trouble.

Beyond that, they need to be separated. This isn’t the kittening mystic toilet, the type of game you end up playing should never be left up to any amount of RNG. That’s like going through an asura gate to a home city, only to have it random roll which one you wind up in.

People there to play anything will play all three modes. People there to play just one mode will not suddenly have fun if they’re pushed into the other modes. You shouldn’t have to play modes you don’t like just to get an occasional shot at the one you do. That’s “preparing to have fun” work, something ANet once knew was a bad idea.

I’m sad to see no sign of this happening.

In a guild, only a few select people will be able to make the final calls on any decisions about a Guild Hall. If you’re not one of those few and want to play around with the systems, then you either need personal housing, or a guild hall of your very own. The problem is that while you may be able to build up a guild’s guild hall while also working on your personal housing, you can’t build towards two different guild halls at the same time. They’ve made such a thing. Therefore, it failed.

However, they’ve learned a lot from it, and I think that going forward their skills will be better for having done it. I also expect them to continue with the LS. It will pick up after HoT, and bridge the gap between that and the next expansion while adding more bits to the world at large, be they areas or just more lore and events to existing areas.

Pyromancer, Aeromancer, Geomancer, Hydromancer and Arcanist seem like the most obvious specializations to start with. Would love to see Aeromancer, Geomancer, or Pyromancer. But as for arcanist and hydromancer, I think two years shoehorned by our horribly designed class mechanic into those two trees was enough for the rest of my life.

Conjurer: Weapons are gone, replaced by the conjured weapons. Changing attunements changes the one you’re wielding.

Summoner: More elementals that don’t just disappear, turning the Elementalist into a pet class.

Geomancer: HUGE AoEs that rely less on direct damage, and more on changing the battlefield itself. Lots of large element fields.

Blast Mage: All damage, all the time. Being subtle can go kitten itself. Forget the glass cannon, this is the cannon made from highly combustible paper.

Arcane Archer: Because throwing spells by hand just doesn’t get them far enough, fast enough. Single target ranged elemental attacks.

I can think of a few more, but I think you get the idea. Right now, if someone wants to be a “Fire Mage”, they can do that by just picking the right traits and skills, then never leaving Fire Attunement. Same for the other elements.

“Each Mastery track is tied to a region of Tyria—they must be unlocked with Mastery points gained in that region and can only be trained in that region”

Really, ANet? Really?

Translation:
“Each Mastery track gear tier is tied to a region of raid in Tyria—they must be unlocked with Mastery points gained in that region and can only be trained in that region by running that content repeatedly”

It’s not a gear grind. OK. But it looks, sounds, and smells like a content grind. I’m withholding judgement until we have more details, but please explain why needing to rerun content to be able to participate in that content isn’t grindy.

I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that this is how it’s going to work, because from what I’ve read you’re a slight bit off.

First of all, there’s going to be two “regions” in the game when HoT goes live. The HoT expansion area, and the older zones. This is so that the stuff you earn in HoT doesn’t apply in the main game. I’d expect any further expansions to work the same way, so the old game isn’t crushed under the weight of new abilities.

As to gaining and training Masteries? Yes, you will have to do something to get the track you’re after unlocked. Maybe it will be a raid, maybe a normal event, maybe map completion. Once you have it unlocked, though, doing anything that would normally give your level 80 EXP will now go towards earning you the points for that Mastery.

For example, let’s invent the Mastery of “Skritt Barter”, which allows you to haggle with skritt merchants and maybe make trades with them for items they don’t normally offer. You unlock it by doing one of the events to protect the King in Skrittsburgh. Once you have it unlocked, you can then select it as the Mastery you’re working on. Now, so long as you’re in the main world (not HoT zones), your EXP will go towards this Mastery. Maybe it takes one full bar to get to rank 1, two bars to rank 2, and so on… but ANY EXP you gain is going towards this. If you go to an HoT zone, you’ll change over to working on HoT Masteries.

No grinding of any content is needed. Specific content to unlock, yes, but then any content can be used to earn Mastery ranks.

Is there a Falling Mastery?

I think some would want a Mastery to increase falling damage, to judge by the various threads full of lemmings posting their top damage from leaps off Rata Sum.

I’d think Falling Mastery would let us do tucks, rolls, spins — all the diving goggle stuff — but still go splat at the bottom.

“You died.”
“Yes, but I looked awesome doing it!”

Masteries: Gating content.

I don’t mind hard fights. In fact, I love hard content like Liadri. I can’t stand stuff that tells me no matter how good you are at this game you can not fight this creature that you are at because we put an arbitrary mechanic in place. I am not talking about leveling. I am talking about making me gain something by grinding in order to be able to fight it. Call it gear grind, call it mastery points.

Can we call it a “Queen’s Gauntlet Entrance Ticket”? As I recall, you needed those to get into the fight.

They were fairly easy to get, as I recall, but you still had to have them to do the fights. And if you ran out, you had to go get more.

As far as that goes, Liadri was fight 4 of Tier 3, right? She was effectively gated by everything before her. It didn’t matter how good you were, you had to earn the chance to fight her.

The problem isn’t stuff being gated. It’s stuff being gated badly. Wouldn’t you agree?

So, it sounds like we’ll be able to glide in the new map when we fall, once we’ve mastered that. Sounds fun.

But what happens when we then return to the old world zones, and can’t glide any more? We’re going to have players splatting themselves like kestrels with bad depth perception. People jumping off of ledges, only to remember a moment too late just where they are.

So, is there going to be a Mastery to reduce falling damage? Something tells me it might be very popular if there is.

[Suggestion] - Old world hang gliding

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I’ve been thinking of something along the same lines. “Updraft Points”, if you will, where you can glide from in old world maps.

Let’s take the top of the eagle statue in the Queen’s Pavilion in DR for an example. If you jump from there, and can’t gain altitude, then there’s a fairly limited range of places you can go.

Heck, they could even institute “Gliding Puzzles”. You start at Updraft Point A, and you have to reach goal platform B. Imagine trying to glide through Windrock Maze in Ascalon.

I’d say that the odds of this happening in the future depends on how popular the gliding turns out to be once the players get to try it.

But yeah, if it’s “get the rockets, and then kill 500 enemies before you can unlock the doors with them,” then that would be annoying more than fun.

I hope ANet paid close attention to using missiles to unlock doors in the first Metroid, actually. There’s a method to how they did it that I’m hoping they learned from.

When you first get the missiles, you get 5. That’s it, that’s all you can hold. That’s also enough to unlock a red door, the barrier they’re supposed to get you through. But, it’s only just enough, so if you’ve been using them, sometimes you have to stop and fight a bit to restock before you can open a door.

Then, as you play, you start finding more missile boosters. Soon you can carry 10, then 15, and so on. You can use them more freely, and rarely have to stop to restock before you can open a door. In other words, you get better at using missiles just by playing, once you’ve unlocked them the first time.

That’s the lesson I hope ANet learned for this. The starting ability you get from a basic Mastery should be enough to get you further, and no more. Then, leveling up that Mastery should make it easier and more convenient to use, so you can make better use of the ability as you play, until it finally becomes a standard part of how you go about things.

And those who dont buy expansion?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Well I’m sure there’ll be some free feature packs eventually and the living story should continue, too.

Actually kind of curious how the living story will continue without touching the expansion for the expansion-less people.

It will take place in the old maps, and start by dealing with the fallout of the fight against Mordy.

Eventually, some new threat will rise up, and the story will start to focus on that. This will then become the intro for expansion #2.

So the expansion will contain it’s own story, that once we complete, there won’t be any more story added (via LS) to the expansion realm? That seems a bit odd…

Oh, there may be some additions in the HoT area as well, but yes the main LS storyline will be in the “base” world. They’ve already said this somewhere, but I don’t remember where or when.

To be cynical about it, look at the LS as an advertisement for both the Gem Store, and anything they’re cooking up for expansions. They want as many people to have access to this advertisement as possible. So, they won’t lock it away from the people that they’re hoping to get money from.
